Three-translation (3T) redundant actuated Delta/Par4-like manipulators with closed-loop units (CLU) are widely used in logistics sorting, industrial packaging, and other applications due to their superior load-carrying capacity and dynamic performance. However, compared to conventional 3T parallel mechanisms (PMs), there are fewer configurations of 3T redundant actuated PMs with CLU, and the existing CLU are of a single configuration. This paper introduces a method for synthesizing a 3T redundant actuated PM with CLU based on the atlas method. First, the degrees of freedom (DOF) line diagrams and constraint line diagrams of the moving platform are determined sequentially. By applying the dual rule, the constraint diagrams are decomposed, yielding six dual DOF spaces. The equivalent DOF line diagrams are expanded using the principle of line equivalence, which synthesizes a variety of novel 4- and 5-DOF branched chains with CLU. Second, considering the geometrically symmetric distribution criterion of the branched chains, two assembly schemes for redundant actuated 3T PMs with CLU are proposed, yielding at least 432 and 324 novel configurations, respectively. Finally, two representative novel mechanisms are selected, and their DOF properties are verified using screw theory, which demonstrates the feasibility and applicability of the synthesized method. This method systematically synthesizes novel redundant actuated 3T PMs with CLU, laying the foundation for further research into innovative CLU configurations.

Remote center-of-motion (RCM) manipulators are a key issue in minimally invasive surgeries (MIS). The existing RCM parallel mechanisms (PMs) can only generate RCM motion based on the invariant RCM. To provide mobility for RCM, this paper designed a new family of RCM PMs with movable RCM that features a double-stage topological structure. Drawing mainly on configuration evolution and Lie-group, a general approach is proposed to design double-stage PMs with movable RCM. Feasible limbs for 2R1T RCM motion are enumerated and used to construct the secondary PM. Type synthesis of the primary PMs that realize movable RCM is accomplished based on the method presented. Different connection styles between the two stages that ensure the geometrical conditions of RCM motion are designed. Using different connection styles, double-stage PMs with movable RCM are constructed. These new RCM PMs can realize precise positioning of RCM by taking advantage of the primary PMs, which indicates their potential application prospects in MIS.

Variable topological space robots are essential for providing adaptability and flexibility, enabling the robot to adjust its morphology to perform a range of tasks in the unstructured environment of space. However, impact is a common consequence of topology transformation in space robotics, which may lead to irreversible damage, such as the shedding of solid lubrication on joints. Nevertheless, determining the precise force-time relationships of such impacts poses significant challenges, especially when accounting for various connection mechanisms. In this work, a docking strategy that optimizes the manipulator’s joint angle configuration to minimize the impulse when the topology changes is proposed. First, an estimation technique is developed to quantify the impulse generated by topology transformation, employing spatial operator algebra and generalized momentum balance equations. Based on this model, the impulse minimization is modelled as a bilevel optimization problem, which decomposes a complex multipolar problem into two simpler subproblems. Although this optimization model may compromise computational efficiency, it increases the probability of achieving an optimal solution. To address this, a bilevel solution strategy based on a heuristic algorithm is proposed. In this framework, the lower level uses particle swarm optimization to determine the global optimum, while the upper level adopts simulated annealing to enhance computational speed. Finally, simulations are conducted to validate the proposed approach. Results demonstrate that the proposed method substantially reduces impulse.

Automatic visual localization of electric vehicle (EV) charging ports presents significant challenges in uncertain environments, such as varying surface textures, reflections, lighting and observation distance. Existing methods require extensive real-world training data and well-focused images to achieve robust and accurate localization. However, both requirements are difficult to meet under variable and unpredictable conditions. This paper proposes a 2-stage vision-based localization approach. Firstly, the image synthesis technique is used to reduce the cost of real-world data collection. A task-oriented parameterization protocol (TOPP) is proposed to optimize the quality of the synthetic images. Secondly, an autofocus and servoing strategy is proposed. A hybrid detector is employed to enhance sharpness assessment performance, while a visual servoing method based on single exponential smoothing (SES) is developed to enhance stability and efficiency during the search process. Experiments were conducted to evaluate image synthesis efficiency, detection accuracy, and servoing performance. The proposed method achieved 99% detection accuracy on the real-world port images, and guided the robot to the optimal imaging position within 16 s, outperforming comparable approaches. These results highlight its potential for robust automated charging in real-world scenarios.

Stroke is a prevalent neurological event that often induces significant motor impairments in the upper extremities, such as hemiplegia, which impacts bimanual coordination and fine motor skills. Robotic-assisted therapy has gained prominence as a contemporary rehabilitation modality, providing augmented motor repetitions and proprioceptive feedback, thereby potentiating neuroplasticity and functional recovery. This pilot study aimed to examine the therapeutic efficacy of a robotic intervention for wrist rehabilitation in two post-stroke adults aged 50–70 years. The intervention protocol, implemented biweekly over four weeks, encompassed 45-minute sessions consisting of passive muscle elongation (5 min) and robotic-facilitated exercises targeting pronation-supination (10 min), flexion-extension (10 min), and radial-ulnar deviation (10 min). Outcome measures included pre- and post-intervention assessments utilizing the motor activity log, Fugl-Meyer Scale, and robotic metrics for muscular strength. Results indicated enhancements in joint range of motion, motor precision, and neuromuscular control, with patient “B” demonstrating superior improvements, particularly in complex motor patterns. In contrast, patient “A” exhibited attenuated progress, attributable to pronounced baseline deficits and fatigue. Specific gains were observed in flexion-extension for patient “A” and pronation-supination for patient “B,” with minimal advancements in radial-ulnar deviation across both subjects. These findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the efficacy of robotic-assisted therapy in motor rehabilitation post-stroke with the novel proposed wrist rehabilitation device.

Reduced-order models encapsulating complex whole-body dynamics have facilitated stable walking in various bipedal robots. These models have enabled intermittent control methods by applying control inputs intermittently (alternating between zero input and feedback input), allowing robots to follow natural dynamics and provide energetically and computationally efficient walking. However, due to their inability to derive closed-form solutions for the angular momentum generated by swing motions and other dynamic actions, constructing a precise model for the walking phase with zero input is challenging, and controlling walking behavior using an intermittent controller remains problematic. This paper proposes an intermittent controller for bipedal robots, modeled as a multi-mass system consisting of an inverted pendulum and an additional mass representing the swing leg. The proposed controller alternates between feedback control during the double support (DS) phase and zero-input control during the single support (SS) phase. By deriving a constrained trajectory, the system behaves as a conservative system during the SS phase, enabling closed-form solutions to the equations of motion. This constraint allows the robot to track the target behavior accurately, intermittently adjusting energy during the DS phase. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulations and experiments with a bipedal robot, demonstrating its capability to accurately and stably track the target walking velocity using intermittent control.

The safety of human-collaborative operations with robots depends on monitoring the external torque of the robot, in which there are toque sensor-based and torque sensor-free methods. Economically, the classic method for estimating joint external torque is the first-order momentum observer (MOB) based on a physic model without torque sensors. However, uncertainties in the dynamic model, which encompasses parameters identification error and joint friction, affect the torque estimation accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes using the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) method to estimate joint external torque without the delicate physical model by utilizing the powerful machine learning ability to handle the uncertainties of the MOB method and improve the accuracy of torque estimation. Using data obtained from the torque sensor to train the BPNN to build up a digital torque model, the trained BPNN can perceive force in practical applications without relying on the torque sensor. In the end, by contrast to the classic first-order MOB, the result demonstrates that BPNN achieves higher estimation accuracy compared to the MOB.

The enhanced computing power of the onboard flight control system and the low flapping frequency have made real-time position and attitude control possible for large flapping-wing flying robots (LFWFRs). Therefore, it is necessary to design an efficient flapping load calculation method to provide the load situation of the flapping wings. To address this problem, we establish a three-dimensional aeroelastic model by coupling the finite element method and state-space airloads theory. This model considers the interaction between aerodynamic loads, inertial loads, and flapping-wing structural elasticity during the flapping motion, which could quickly calculate the instantaneous aerodynamic loads and inertial loads of flapping wings under different flight conditions. The accuracy of the model was verified through vacuum and wind tunnel experiments. Experiments under various flight conditions demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method, and the method could be used to guide the rapid iterative upgrade and control law design of LFWFRs.

This paper addresses the issue of energy-efficient trajectory optimization for planetary surface manipulators under kinematic and dynamic constraints. To mitigate the inefficiency of existing algorithms, an adaptive boundary adjustment strategy for the multi-dimensional decision space is proposed, which modifies the time intervals between neighboring configuration nodes, enabling precise adaptation of the decision space boundaries. Additionally, a complementary dual-archive guided boundary exploration strategy is introduced to connect the feasible and infeasible regions, allowing for the effective utilization of information from infeasible solutions near the constraint boundaries. This heuristic approach guides the particle swarm in efficiently exploring areas close to the constraints, significantly enhancing the evolutionary optimization capability of the swarm. Furthermore, a swarm optimal position updating strategy based on sparsity sorting is developed. This guides the particle swarm to concentrate on exploring positions where non-dominated solutions on the Pareto front are more sparsely distributed, ensuring uniformity and completeness in the final Pareto front. Finally, the aforementioned strategies are integrated into a heuristic multi-objective particle swarm optimization (HMOPSO) algorithm for the trajectory optimization of manipulators. Comparative experiments are conducted with HMOPSO and existing advanced algorithms in the field of multi-objective optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that HMOPSO exhibits superior evolutionary optimization capabilities and faster convergence rates. Moreover, performance metrics such as inverse generation distance and dominant area during the iterative process of HMOPSO significantly outperform those of existing optimization algorithms.

This article presents a comprehensive evaluation of two nuclear-rated bilateral telerobotic systems, Telbot and Dexter, focusing on critical performance metrics such as effort transparency, stiffness, and backdrivability. Despite the absence of standardized evaluation methodologies for these systems, this study identifies key gaps by experimentally assessing the quantitative performance of both systems under controlled conditions. The results reveal that Telbot exhibits higher stiffness, but at the cost of greater effort transmission, whereas Dexter offers smoother backdrivability. Furthermore, positional discrepancies were observed during the tests, particularly in nonlinear positional displacements. These findings highlight the need for standardized evaluation methods, contributing to the development, manufacturing, and procurement processes of future bilateral telerobotic systems.

Cable-driven parallel robots (CDPRs) have been widely used as motion executers for their large workspace and lower inertia. However, there are few studies on structural optimization design considering its stability. This paper proposes a stability optimization method based on force-position workspace for a reconfigurable cable-driven parallel robot (RCDPR). First, the structural optimization analysis of RCDPR is carried out. Then, the forces distribution algorithm based on the feasibility of real-time control is determined, and the boundary contour algorithm (BCA) of the RCDPR force feasible workspace (FFW) on the central plane is proposed. Second, the stiffness and cables driving force space (CFS) models of RCDPR are established. Subsequently, the stability evaluation function is established to optimize the structure of RCDPR, which uses FFW and main task feasible workspace (MFW) as carriers and stiffness and CFS as weights. Finally, an experimental prototype of the developed robot is constructed, and motion performance and workspace verification experiments are conducted. The results demonstrate that the developed RCDPR has good motion accuracy and stable workspace, and the results also verify the feasibility of the stability evaluation function and BCA.

Elbow, with complex physiological structure, plays an important role in upper limb motion which can be assisted with exoskeleton in rehabilitation. However, the stiffness of elbow changes while training which decline the comfort and effect of rehabilitation. Moreover, the rotation axis of elbow is changing which will cause secondary injuries. In this paper, we design an elbow exoskeleton with a variable stiffness actuator and a deviation compensation unit to assist elbow rehabilitation. Firstly, we design a variable stiffness actuator by symmetric actuation principle to adapt the change of elbow stiffness. The parameters of the variable stiffness actuator are optimized by motion simulation. Next, we design a deviation compensation unit to follow the rotation axis deviation outside the horizontal plane. The compensation area is simulated to cover the deviation. Finally, simulation and experiments are carried out to show the performance of our elbow exoskeleton. The workspace can meet the need of daily elbow motion while the variable stiffness actuator can adjust the exoskeleton stiffness as expectation.

Maintaining object grasp stability represents a pivotal challenge within the domain of robotic manipulation and upper-limb prosthetics. Perturbations originating from external sources frequently disrupt the stability of grasps, resulting in slippage occurrences. Also, if the grasping forces are not optimal while controlling the slip, it may result in the deformation of the objects. This study investigates the robustification of a reinforcement learning (RL) policy for implementing intelligent bionic reflex control, i.e., slip and deformation prevention of the grasped objects. RL-derived policies are vulnerable to failures in environments characterized by dynamic variability. To mitigate this vulnerability, we propose a methodology involving the incorporation of an adaptive sliding mode controller into a pre-trained RL policy. By exploiting the inherent invariance property of the sliding mode algorithm in the presence of uncertainties, our approach strengthens the robustness of the RL policies against diverse and dynamic variations. Numerical simulations substantiate the efficacy of our approach in robustifying RL policies trained within simulated environments.

Based on the characteristics of the variable pivot gait during the human load-carrying, this paper proposes a double-leg coordination assistance principle for load-carrying: assisting support of the guiding leg at the heel-pivot stage by the spring to reduce the collision, which can reduce the ankle moment of the following leg that is performing the push-off at the toe-pivot stage. A novel unpowered load-carrying exoskeleton (ULE) with a double-support closed-chain configuration is designed, and the theoretical verification is carried out. Five subjects participate in the load-carrying and metabolic cost experiments for assisting and energy-saving effect evaluation, and the angle and moment of human joints, plantar pressure, spring compression and human net metabolic rate are analyzed. Compared with carrying load by the human alone, wearing the novel ULE with spring reduces the human peak ankle moment performing the push-off by up to 11.9 ± 1.6% (Mean±SE, 10 kg), average ankle moment over the support phase by up to 36.8 ± 9.1% (Mean±SE, 5 kg) and the average vertical plantar pressure by up to 8.1 ± 1%% (Mean±SE, 15 kg). Meanwhile, wearing the novel ULE reduces the human net metabolic rate by 5.6 ± 0.5% (Mean±SE, 10 kg), 4.1 ± 0.7% (Mean±SE, 15 kg) and 5.9 ± 1.6% (Mean±SE, 20 kg). The results show that the novel ULE can provide support and joint moment assistance over the whole support phase while reducing human net metabolic rate. This study can also be applied to the powered load-carrying exoskeleton, providing a new avenue.

Cable-driven snake-like robots have been widely applied in various fields. However, some of these robots may have poor operational precision and payload capacity. Moreover, an excessive number of motors would increase the complexity of motion control, and the configuration of driving cables at the distal joints is severely limited by the drive system. Therefore, this study introduces a driving model of cable-driven rolling joints through coordinate-based analysis, and proposes a novel two-degree-of-freedom planar synergy drive system to enable variable curvature at the distal joints. A prototype was designed based on the proposed system, which was put into a precision experiment. Two quantifiable parameters were proposed to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed system. The distal joint precision and the driving model precision were employed as indicators to quantify the performance of the prototype. The maximum mean absolute error of the two indicators was 1.52% and 1.88$^{\circ }$, respectively, and the maximum root mean square error was 1.66% and 2.02$^{\circ }$, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, which offers increased flexibility in the cable configuration at the distal joints.

This paper introduces two enhanced control approaches to improve the performance of parallel manipulators, addressing their inherent nonlinear dynamics and complex structure. The first approach results in a hybrid control system in joint space, integrating acceleration-based control, sliding mode, and disturbance observer techniques. The control system is designed to correct tracking errors and compensate for generalized disturbances, thus improving accuracy in tracking reference positions. The second approach merges the joint-space and task-space formulations, implementing proportional-derivative controllers in task space to manage the end-effector positions while maintaining safe operational configurations. The stability of the proposed controllers is demonstrated through Lyapunov analysis, while their performance is validated through comprehensive simulations and real-time experiments.

The robot manipulator is commonly employed in the space station experiment cabinet for the disinfection task. The challenge lies in devising a motion trajectory for the robot manipulator that satisfies both performance criteria and constraints within the confined space of an experimental cabinet. To address this issue, this paper proposes a trajectory planning method in joint space. This method constructs the optimal trajectory by transforming the original problem into a constrained multi-objective optimization problem. This is then solved and integrated with the seventh-degree B-spline curve. The optimization algorithm utilizes an indicator-based adaptive differential evolution algorithm, enhanced with improved Tent chaotic mapping and opposition-based learning for population initialization. The method employed the Fréchet distance to design a trajectory selection strategy based on the Pareto solutions to ensure that the planned trajectory complies with Cartesian space requirements. This allows the robot manipulator end-effector to approximate the desired path in Cartesian space closely. The findings indicate that the proposed method can effectively design the robot manipulator trajectory, considering both joint motion performance and end-effector motion constraints. This ensures that the robot manipulator operates efficiently and safely within the experimental cabinet.

Most research on UAV swarm architectures remains confined to simulation-based studies, with limited real-world implementation and validation. In order to mitigate this issue, this research presents an improved task allocation and formation control system within ARCog-NET (Aerial Robot Cognitive Architecture), aimed at deploying autonomous UAV swarms as a unified and scalable solution. The proposed architecture integrates perception, planning, decision-making, and adaptive learning, enabling UAV swarms to dynamically adjust path planning, task allocation, and formation control in response to evolving mission demands. Inspired by artificial intelligence and cognitive science, ARCog-NET employs an Edge-Fog-Cloud (EFC) computing model, where edge UAVs handle real-time data acquisition and local processing, fog nodes coordinate intermediate control, and cloud servers manage complex computations, storage, and human supervision. This hierarchical structure balances real-time autonomy at the UAV level with high-level optimization and decision-making, creating a collective intelligence system that automatically fine-tunes decision parameters based on configurable triggers. To validate ARCog-NET, a realistic simulation framework was developed using SITL (Software-In-The-Loop) with actual flight controller firmware and ROS-based middleware, enabling high-fidelity emulation. This framework bridges the gap between virtual simulations and real-world deployments, allowing evaluation of performance in environmental monitoring, search and rescue, and emergency communication network deployment. Results demonstrate superior energy efficiency, adaptability, and operational effectiveness compared to conventional robotic swarm methodologies. By dynamically optimizing data processing based on task urgency, resource availability, and network conditions, ARCog-NET bridges the gap between theoretical swarm intelligence models and real-world UAV applications, paving the way for future large-scale deployments.

In this work, the problem of reliably checking collisions between robot manipulators and the surrounding environment in short time for tasks, such as replanning and object grasping in clutter, is addressed. Geometric approaches are usually applied in this context; however, they can result not suitable in highly time-constrained applications. The purpose of this paper is to present a learning-based method able to outperform geometric approaches in clutter. The proposed approach uses a neural network (NN) to detect collisions online by performing a classification task on the input represented by the depth image or point cloud containing the robot gripper projected into the application scene. Specifically, several state-of-the-art NN architectures are considered, along with some customization to tackle the problem at hand. These approaches are compared to identify the model that achieves the highest accuracy while containing the computational burden. The analysis shows the feasibility of the robot collision checker based on a deep learning approach. In fact, such approach presents a low collision detection time, of the order of milliseconds on the selected hardware, with acceptable accuracy. Furthermore, the computational burden is compared with state-of-the-art geometric techniques. The entire work is based on an industrial case study involving a KUKA Agilus industrial robot manipulator at the Technology $\&$ Innovation Center of KUKA Deutschland GmbH, Germany. Further validation is performed with the Amazon Robotic Manipulation Benchmark (ARMBench) dataset as well, in order to corroborate the reported findings.

In complex work environments, improving efficiency and stability is an important issue in robot path planning. This article proposes a new path optimization algorithm based on pseudospectral methods. The algorithm includes an adaptive weighting factor in the objective function, which automatically adjusts the quality of the path while satisfying the performance indicators of the shortest time. It also considers kinematic, dynamic, boundary, and obstacle constraints, and applies the Separating Axis Theorem collision detection method to improve computational efficiency. To discretize the continuous path optimization problem into a nonlinear programming problem, the algorithm utilizes Chebyshev polynomials for the interpolation of state and control variables, along with the adoption of the Lagrange interpolation polynomial to approximate the curve. Finally, it solves the nonlinear programming problem numerically using CasADi, which supports automatic differentiation. The results of the simulation demonstrate that the path optimized by the adaptive-weight pseudospectral method can satisfy various constraints and optimization objectives simultaneously. Experimental verification confirms the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed algorithm.
