The Transactions of the Royal Historical Society is the flagship journal of the Royal Historical Society (RHS), the UK’s leading membership organisation for professional historians of all kinds. Founded in 1872, Transactions has been publishing the highest quality scholarship in history for 150 years and continues to highlight and champion the dynamism of the field.
Today, the journal welcomes submissions dealing with all historical subjects and any geographical area from the early middle ages to the very recent past. The journal’s Editors are interested in articles that cover entirely new ground, thematically or methodologically, as well as those that engage critically on established themes in existing literatures.
Alongside research articles, contributions that engage with pedagogy and key issues facing the profession and those interested in history are welcome, in keeping with the broad remit and interests of the RHS. The journal’s Editors also encourage potential contributors to suggest innovative article formats (such as discussion, interview, or roundtable pieces) in which to discuss new research and historical practice, both in higher education and related sectors. Please email the Editors directly to discuss your ideas (trhs@royalhistsoc.org).
In line with the Society's commitment to supporting postgraduate and early career historians, the journal’s Editors encourage submissions from scholars at all stages of their career, including the early stages. We are committed to engaging constructively and positively with new authors to publish inventive, original research and are always happy to hear from potential contributors.
All articles in this journal are now published Gold open access, an important way to make research findings freely available for anyone to access and view. Open access serves authors and the wider community by publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed OA content. For more information about publishing Gold OA in this journal, see our open access options.
