Field studies were conducted in 1985 and 1986 to determine the influence of herbicide rate, carrier, and carrier volume on off-site movement of clomazone {2-[2-chlorophenyl)methyl]-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxalidinone} using sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. ‘HY-894’) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Caldwell’) as indicator plants. Clomazone applied at the lowest rate (0.56 kg ai/ha) had less off-site movement than higher rates. Off-site movement was similar among water carrier volumes applied at each clomazone rate but was less when clomazone was impregnated onto dry fertilizer.

Field experiments were conducted in 2001, 2002, and 2003 to evaluate PRE applications of mesotrione at 150, 230, and 310 g ai/ha alone, and in mixtures with S-metolachlor at 1,070 g ai/ha and atrazine at 560 and 1,120 g ai/ha in corn. Corn injury was 11 to 18% with all treatments in 2002 when 3.2 cm of rainfall occurred within 10 d after PRE applications, but no injury was observed in 2001 and 2003 when rainfall was 0 and 1.1 cm within 10 d after PRE applications, respectively. Rainfall following PRE herbicide applications also influenced weed control, where weed control was generally poor with all herbicide treatments in 2001. Mesotrione at 150 g/ha controlled common lambsquarters and smooth pigweed at least 95% in 2002 and 2003, but control was 70% or less in 2001. PRE mesotrione at rates of 230 or 310 g/ha controlled common ragweed at least 83% in 2002 and 2003, but control exceeded 88% with mixtures of mesotrione at rates greater than 150 g/ha plus S-metolachlor plus atrazine at 560 g/ha. Morningglory species (ivyleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and tall morningglory) were not consistently controlled by mesotrione alone. In 2002 and 2003, mixtures of all mesotrione rates plus S-metolachlor plus atrazine at 1,120 g/ha controlled morningglory species at least 90%. Corn treated with mesotrione at any rate plus S-metolachlor plus atrazine at 1,120 g/ha consistently produced high yields. It is concluded that control with this three-way mixture would be most consistent with a minimum rate of mesotrione at 230 g/ha and atrazine at 1,120 g/ha.

Velvetleaf is one of the most significant and fastest spreading alien weeds in Europe, and it is a difficult weed to control in conventional sugarbeet. Laboratory experiments were carried out in 2007 and 2008 and field experiments were carried out in 2006, 2007, and 2008 with the aim of finding effective herbicide combinations and optimum timing of control. Herbicides containing the active ingredients phenmedipham, desmedipham, ethofumesate, clopyralid, and triflusulfuron were all tested at different timings. Phenmedipham + desmedipham + ethofumesate gave 87% velvetleaf control in pot experiments when applied at the growth stages of velvetleaf cotyledons and one true leaf, but only 27 to 42% control in field trials. Triflusulfuron gave 76% control in pot experiments and 83 to 88% control in field experiments. The timing of the first and second herbicide applications was very important: the first application of herbicides must be at the cotyledon stage of velvetleaf. A 1-wk delay in first application reduced herbicide efficacy by 8%. A 5-d period between the first and second treatments gave 93% control, while a 10-d period between the first and second treatments gave only 77% control. Sugarbeet yield decreased by 60 to 86% due to competition with velvetleaf when a standard herbicide combination (phenmedipham + desmedipham + ethofumesate) was used, and the velvetleaf produced between 6,700 and 14,800 seeds m−2. Inclusion of triflusulfuron in the herbicide treatment significantly reduced velvetleaf seed production to between 200 and 4,700 seeds m−2. In most cases, inclusion of triflusulfuron increased sugarbeet yield. Better velvetleaf control occurred in years when the sugarbeet canopy developed early and the index of leaf area of sugarbeet was higher.

Field experiments were conducted in north-central Oklahoma to evaluate the effects of MON 37500 at 35, 70, and 140 g ai/ha applied to wheat on rotational crops seeded no-till 16 to 29 mo after treatment (MAT). Wheat yields were not reduced by MON 37500 at site 1 but at site 2 were decreased 6, 11, and 24% by 35, 70, and 140 g/ha, respectively. Wheat yield reductions at site 2 were attributed to late seeding, small wheat growth stage, and cool, wet weather during the month after application. Corn and soybean seeded approximately 16 MAT were not visibly injured by residual MON 37500 at any rate at either site. At site 1 grain sorghum seeded 17 MAT was visibly injured by residual MON 37500 applied at 70 and 140 g/ha (soil pH value 6.4), and grain yield was reduced 58% by residual MON 37500 applied at 140 g/ha. Grain sorghum seeded 17 MAT was not visibly injured at site 2 (soil pH value 5.0), and that seeded 29 MAT was not injured at either site. Sunflower seeded 17 MAT at site 1 was visibly injured by residual MON 37500 at 140 g/ha, and yield was reduced 17% but at site 2 was not affected by MON 37500. Sunflower seeded 29 MAT was not injured at either site.

Field experiments in winter wheat were initiated at two locations in the fall of 2006 and 2007 to evaluate winter annual broadleaf weeds and winter wheat response to POST applications of two saflufenacil formulations applied alone and in combination with 2,4-D amine. Emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and water-dispersible granule (WG) formulations of saflufenacil at 13, 25, and 50 g ai ha−1 were applied with 1.0% (v/v) crop oil concentrate (COC) and mixed with 2,4-D amine at 533 g ae ha−1 without adjuvant. Regardless of rate or formulation, saflufenacil plus COC and saflufenacil plus 2,4-D amine controlled blue mustard ≥ 91% at 17 to 20 d after treatment (DAT) compared with ≤ 50% control with 2,4-D amine alone. At least 25 g ha−1 of saflufenacil EC was necessary to control flixweed > 90%. Excluding COC from saflufenacil plus 2,4-D amine reduced flixweed control from the saflufenacil WG formulation more than the EC formulation. Most saflufenacil treatments did not control henbit satisfactorily (≤ 80%). Wheat foliar necrosis increased with increasing saflufenacil rate to as high as 30% at 3 to 6 DAT, but declined to < 15% at 10 to 20 DAT and was not evident at 30 DAT. Saflufenacil rate, formulation, and mixing with 2,4-D amine also influenced wheat stunting, but to a lesser extent than foliar necrosis. Saflufenacil EC consistently caused greater foliar necrosis and stunting on wheat than saflufenacil WG. Leaf necrosis and stunting were reduced by tank-mixing saflufenacil formulations with 2,4-D amine without COC. Grain yields of most saflufenacil treatments were similar to 2,4-D amine under weedy conditions and herbicide treatments had no effect on grain yield in weed-free experiments. Saflufenacil formulations at 25 to 50 g ha−1 with 2,4-D amine and saflufenacil WG at 25 to 50 g ha−1 with COC can control winter annual broadleaf weeds with minimal injury (< 15%) and no grain yield reductions. The addition of saflufenacil as a POST-applied herbicide would give wheat growers another useful tool to control annual broadleaf weeds, including herbicide-resistant weed species.

Excellent agreement between a two-year replicated study relative to chlorosis development by clomazone in thirty-six cabbage cultivars and development of chlorosis in a production field was obtained. The cultivars ‘Bravo’, ‘Cheers', and ‘Genesis' developed the most severe chlorosis symptoms and ‘Bently’, ‘Carlton’, ‘Cecile’, ‘Gourmet’, ‘King Cole’, ‘Ocala’, ‘Red Acre’, ‘Rio Verde’, ‘Roundup’, ‘Sombrero’, ‘Stonehead’, ‘Straton’, ‘Titanic’, and ‘Tristar’ the least chlorosis. During a dry soil period chlorosis symptoms were more pronounced. Yield reduction at an application rate exceeding the suggested use rate for weed control varied positively with level of chlorosis in 1992 for the cultivars Bravo, Cheers, Genesis, ‘Krautman’, and ‘Marvelon’.

Field studies were conducted to determine if metribuzin–diclofop combinations could provide selective control of mature goosegrass in common bermudagrass turf. In two field trials, diclofop at 1.7 kg ai/ha provided 19% control of mature goosegrass at 7 wk after treatment (WAT), whereas metribuzin at 0.28 or 0.56 kg ai/ha controlled 30 and 53%, respectively. When diclofop at 1.7 kg/ha was combined with metribuzin at 0.28 or 0.56 kg/ha, goosegrass control increased to 68 and 90%, respectively. That degree of mature goosegrass control with a single application of metribuzin at 0.56 kg/ha plus diclofop at 1.7 kg/ha was equivalent to metribuzin at 0.56 kg/ha plus MSMA at 2.2 kg ae/ha followed by MSMA at 2.2 kg/ha 1 wk later. The metribuzin–diclofop combination injured common bermudagrass turf less than or equivalent to the metribuzin–MSMA combination. The injury was transitory; at 3 WAT, none of the treatments injured common bermudagrass.

Field experiments were conducted at two locations in central Alabama to evaluate competitiveness of large crabgrass and southern sandbur with ‘Tifton 78’ hybrid bermudagrass as influenced by diuron application and sprigging rate. Large crabgrass was the more competitive species. In late season, bermudagrass ground cover with no weed competition was 96% compared with 72 and 81% where large crabgrass and southern sandbur, respectively, were present. Similarly, large crabgrass and southern sandbur reduced the proportion of bermudagrass in the cumulative harvested forage by at least 59 and 38%, respectively. Application of diuron preemergence (PRE) at 1.1 kg ai/ha was more effective than postemergence (POST) application, both in terms of weed control and bermudagrass safety. With diuron applied PRE, large crabgrass and southern sandbur reduced the proportion of bermudagrass in the harvested forage only 32 and 25%, respectively. Increasing bermudagrass sprigging rate was beneficial for weed control but of relatively minor importance compared with diuron PRE.

In recent years, the use of cover crops has increased in U.S. crop production systems. An important aspect of successful cover crop establishment is the preceding crop and herbicide program, because some herbicides have the potential to persist in the soil for several months. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of cover crops to common residual herbicides used in soybean production. The same field experiment was conducted in 2016 in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, and repeated in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, and Missouri in 2017 to evaluate the potential of residual soybean herbicides to carryover and reduce cover crop establishment. Herbicides applied during the soybean growing season included acetochlor; acetochlor plus fomesafen; chlorimuron plus thifensulfuron; fomesafen; fomesafen plus S-metolachlor followed by acetochlor; imazethapyr; pyroxasulfone; S-metolachlor; S-metolachlor plus fomesafen; sulfentrazone plus S-metolachlor; sulfentrazone plus S-metolachlor followed by fomesafen plus S-metolachlor; and sulfentrazone plus S-metolachlor followed by fomesafen plus S-metolachlor followed by acetochlor. Across all herbicide treatments, the sensitivity of cover crops to herbicide residues in the fall, from greatest to least, was forage radish = turnip > annual ryegrass = winter oat = triticale > cereal rye = Austrian winter pea = hairy vetch = wheat > crimson clover. Fomesafen (applied 21 and 42 days after planting [(DAP]); chlorimuron plus thifensulfuron and pyroxasulfone applied 42 DAP; sulfentrazone plus S-metolachlor followed by fomesafen plus S-metolachlor; and sulfentrazone plus S-metolachlor followed by fomesafen plus S-metolachlor followed by acetochlor caused the highest visual ground cover reduction to cover crop species at the fall rating. Study results indicate cover crops are most at risk when following herbicide applications in soybean containing certain active ingredients such as fomesafen, but overall there is a fairly low risk of cover crop injury from residual soybean herbicides applied in the previous soybean crop.

Dermatitis from poison ivy is a significant health problem. Considerable effort is devoted to the control of this invasive and virulent weed in urban areas. Glyphosate, triclopyr, 2,4-D, a 1 : 1 mixture of glyphosate and 2,4-D, and a 9 : 1 mixture of glyphosate and triclopyr were evaluated for poison ivy control. Each of these three herbicides and two mixtures were applied at nine or ten rates, which ranged in phytotoxicity from none to death. Poison ivy plants had been propagated and container-grown. Percent control, as determined from plant fresh weight reduction, was determined at 1 and 4 mo after treatment (MAT). Data were subjected to ANOVA followed by nonlinear regression. Rates required for 95% control at 1 and 4 MAT and the associated costs were determined for each of the three herbicides and two mixtures. Acceptable control (i.e., ≥ 95%) at 1 and 4 MAT could be obtained at a much lower cost with either triclopyr or 2,4-D than with either glyphosate alone or with the two glyphosate-containing mixtures. Nonlinear regression also was used to evaluate whether the two mixtures were interactive (i.e., synergistic or antagonistic) or not (i.e., additive). Glyphosate plus triclopyr was synergistic for control at both 1 and 4 MAT. Glyphosate plus 2,4-D was synergistic for control at 4 MAT only. However, for both mixtures, synergism was only evident at rates that controlled poison ivy ≤ 80%. Both mixtures were noninteractive at rates required for acceptable control.

In 2008, a population of johnsongrass collected from a soybean field near West Memphis, AR, in Crittenden County was confirmed resistant to glyphosate. This was the first documented case of glyphosate-resistant johnsongrass in Arkansas. The purpose of this study was to determine the geographical distribution of glyphosate-resistant johnsongrass in Arkansas crops and screen for resistance to additional herbicides. A total of 141 johnsongrass accessions were collected from 14 counties in Arkansas in the fall of 2008, 2009, and 2010 and screened for resistance to four of the most commonly used POST herbicides for johnsongrass control—imazethapyr, glyphosate, clethodim, and fluazifop. One accession potentially resistant to glyphosate (J12) and another with apparent resistance to imazethapyr (J14) were further evaluated in a dose–response experiment. The lethal dose required to kill 50% of the plants from the putative glyphosate-resistant and imazethapyr-resistant accessions was higher than that of a biotype known to be susceptible to these herbicides. The J12 accession had an LD50 of 1,741 g ae ha−1 glyphosate, which was 8.5-fold greater than the susceptible biotype. The J14 accession had an LD50 of 73 g ai ha−1 imazethapyr, which was 3.7-fold greater than the LD50 of the susceptible biotype. All other accessions were effectively controlled by the four evaluated herbicides. Widespread herbicide-resistant johnsongrass was not found in Arkansas, although accession J12 was resistant to glyphosate and J14 resistant to imazethapyr.

Successful pigweed management requires an integrated strategy to delay the development of resistance to any single control tactic. Field trials were implemented during 2017 and 2018 in three counties in Kansas on dryland (limited rainfall, nonirrigated), glufosinate-resistant soybean. The objective was to assess pigweed control with combinations of a winter wheat cover crop (CC), three soybean row widths (76, 38, and 19 cm), row-crop cultivation 2.5 weeks after planting (WAP), and an herbicide program to develop integrated pigweed management recommendations. All combinations of the four components were assessed by 16 treatments. All treatments with the herbicide program resulted in excellent (>97%) pigweed control and were analyzed separately from the other components. Treatments containing row-crop cultivation reduced pigweed density and biomass 3 and 8 WAP in all locations compared with the 76-cm row width plus no CC treatment. CC impacts were mixed. In Riley County, Palmer amaranth density and biomass were reduced; in Reno County, no additional Palmer amaranth control was observed; in Franklin County, the CC had greater waterhemp density and biomass compared with the treatments containing no CC. Narrow row widths achieved the most consistent results of all cultural components when data were pooled across locations: Decreasing row widths from 76 to 38 cm resulted in a 23% reduction in pigweed biomass 8 WAP and decreasing row width from 38 to 19 cm achieved a 15% reduction. Row-crop cultivation should be incorporated where possible as a mechanical option to manage pigweed, and narrow row widths should be used to suppress late-season pigweed growth when feasible. Inconsistent pigweed control from CC was achieved and should be given special consideration before implementation. The integral use of these components with an herbicide program as a system should be recommended to achieve the best pigweed control and reduce the risk of developing herbicide resistance.

Cultivation is a proven means of weed control in organic peanut. However, weeds present in-row often escape control. Research trials were conducted in Ty Ty, GA to modify cultural practices to help suppress weed emergence in-row. Modified cultural practices were three row pattern/seeding rate combinations; twin rows (four rows on a seedbed) seeded at the recommended (1X) seeding rate that produced 13 seed m−1 in each row, twin rows seeded at the 2X seeding rate that produced 23 seed m−1 in each row, and wide rows (two rows on seedbed) seeded at the recommended seeding rate that produced 23 seed m−1. Four cultivation regimes were evaluated; cultivation with a tine weeder at weekly intervals for 6 wk, cultivation with a tine weeder at weekly intervals for 8 wk, scouring with a brush hoe at vegetative emergence followed by the tine weeder for 6 wk, and a noncultivated control. There were no interactions between row pattern/seeding rates and cultivation regimes for any parameter measured. There was inconsistent response of weed control and peanut yield to row pattern/seeding rates. Weed control and peanut yields were similar with tine weeding for 6 wk, 8 wk, or with the brush hoe followed by the tine weeder. Weed management in organic peanut was not improved by altering peanut cultural practices that facilitate quicker canopy closure, and the use of narrow row patterns should not be based on attempts to improve weed control in organic peanut. Narrow row patterns provide other benefits to organic peanut production and those attributes should influence decisions on the choice of row pattern, not weed control.

Eleven sweet corn hybrids representing a wide range of injury with imazethapyr in a greenhouse study were evaluated in simulated imazethapyr carryover field studies conducted at Arlington, WI. Imazethapyr at 0, 11, 22, and 44 g ai/ha was applied and incorporated 15 d prior to planting sweet corn. The greatest injury occurred 28 d after planting, with reductions in height ranging from 0 to 25%. Reductions in corn ear yields were similar all years for 10 of the 11 hybrids. Reductions in corn ear yield for ‘Crisp N’ Sweet 710,’ ‘Cornucopia,’ ‘Super Sweet Jubilee,’ ‘Excellency,’ and ‘DMC 20–35′ were less than for ‘Natural Sweet 9000,’ ‘Jubilee,’ ‘Zenith,’ ‘Green Giant 40,’ and ‘Green Giant 97.’ In 1992, plots were prepared for an actual imazethapyr carryover study by applying imazethapyr PPI at 70 and 140 g/ha and planting soybean. In 1993, four sweet corn hybrids were planted. Corn ear yield of Green Giant 97 was reduced following previous-year applications of 140 g/ha imazethapyr. Corn ear yields of Excellency, Super Sweet Jubilee, and Jubilee were not reduced at either actual carryover rate. These studies indicate variability among sweet corn hybrids in susceptibility to imazethapyr. Greenhouse results were indicative of field responses and may be useful as a rapid test to determine hybrid susceptibility.

Postemergence herbicides alone and in combination were evaluated for Venice mallow control in corn and onion in Colorado during 1986 and 1987. Season-long control of 88 to 98% in corn was obtained with bromoxynil plus cyanazine or atrazine; 2,4-D amine plus dicamba or bromoxynil; or linuron, bromoxynil, or dicamba applied alone. Oxyfluorfen plus bromoxynil in a split application controlled Venice mallow 80 to 99% all season in onions. Uncontrolled Venice mallow caused higher yield reductions in onions than in corn.

Russian knapweed and perennial pepperweed are invasive to meadow and riparian habitats in the semiarid intermountain west. Seed germination was tested to determine favored seedbed characteristics. Germination was inhibited in both species when water stress was imposed using polyethylene glycol. Knapweed achieved 60% germination after 40 d in dark and alternating light/dark environments. Pepperweed germination was greatest (30% after 14 d) in light and alternating light/ dark environments. Both species showed that germination declines when exposed to salt stress but continued to germinate under salt stress as high as 16 dSm−1.

The effect of atrazine rate and subsequent tillage on seedling alfalfa injury from atrazine carry-over was examined at two locations in Michigan. Atrazine concentration and alfalfa injury 1 yr after treatment were greater in the northern location than in the central Michigan location. At both locations, alfalfa injury was significantly greater under no-tillage than moldboard plowing. With no-tillage, alfalfa was injured more in the area between the previous corn rows than within the rows. Analysis of soil samples collected from within corn rows and between rows showed higher atrazine concentration between the corn rows.

Hemp dogbane and wild blackberry have become significant weed problems in no-tillage corn production in Maryland. Nicosulfuron (31 to 62 g ha−1) plus crop oil concentrate (COC) gave 67% or more hemp dogbane and wild blackberry control. There was no difference in hemp dogbane or wild blackberry control between 31 and 94 g ai ha−1 nicosulfuron. Tank mixtures of 2,4-D or dicamba with nicosulfuron gave 72 to 100% hemp dogbane and wild blackberry control. Hemp dogbane control following applications of 560 g ha−1 2,4-D was 97% in 1989 and 63% in 1990. Wild blackberry control with 2,4-D was 40% both years. Dicamba at 280 g ha−1 gave 70 and 55% control of hemp dogbane and 75 and 65% control of wild blackberry in 1989 and 1990, respectively. Triclopyr plus 2,4-D provided 72 to 98% hemp dogbane control and 92 to 98% wild blackberry control. However, triclopyr plus 2,4-D applied at 280 plus 560 g ha−1 injured corn, and corn yields were reduced compared with weedy controls in 1990.

Field studies were conducted in 1994 and 1995 at Dekalb and Urbana, IL, to evaluate preemergence broadleaf weed control and crop tolerance in imidazolinone resistant (IR) and susceptible (non-IR) corn using atrazine, imazethapyr, AC 263,222, CGA-152005, MON 12000 with and without MON 13900 (a safener), and flumetsulam + clopyralid. When sufficient rainfall occurred within 28 d of application to insure herbicide absorption, the IR corn variety was more tolerant than the susceptible variety to imazethapyr, AC 263,222, CGA-152005 at 40 and 80 g/ha, and MON 12000 with and without MON 13900. Overall crop tolerance of IR corn was equal to that of corn treated with atrazine for all herbicide treatments except CGA-152005, which injured IR corn. Control of velvetleaf, common lambsquarters, Pennsylvania smartweed, tall morningglory, and jimsonweed for all herbicide treatments was equal or superior to that of atrazine at 1.7 kg/ha. However, control of common cocklebur was significantly greater with atrazine compared to imazethapyr and the low rate of CGA-152005.

Research was conducted from 1983 through 1985 in east central Texas to determine the effect of grass-specific herbicides, herbicide rates, and weed height on johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. #3 SORHA] control and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. 'Stoneville 825’) yield. Seven herbicides were applied to johnsongrass less than 30 cm tall with 2 to 5 leaves approximately 4 weeks after cotton emergence. Good-to-excellent johnsongrass control was observed for each herbicide except cloproxydim {(E,E)-2-[l-[[(3-chloro-2-propenyl)oxy]imino] butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} at 0.56 kg ai/ha and sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} at 0.28 kg ai/ha. Few significant differences were found in seed cotton yields even though johnsongrass control ranged from 43 to 99% 26 days after treatment (DAT). These data suggest that johnsongrass regrowth and/or reinfestation following initial control of 75% or higher during the first 4 to 6 weeks after cotton emergence has a minimum negative effect on cotton yield. Johnsongrass control was highest when either fluazifop-P {(R)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy]propanoic acid} or haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid} was applied to 15 to 30 cm tall johnsongrass.
