A revised structure model of ettringite is presented, in order to provide quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) of this mineral in cement pastes. The model is derived from two different existing structure models, both of which are suitable for restricted use but are inferior to the refined ettringite structure presented. In the first published ettringite structure proposed by Moore and Taylor [Acta Crystallogr. B 26, 386–393 (1970)], none of the 128 positions for H are given in the unit cell, which results in reduced scattering power for use of this model for quantification purposes. For the precise quantification of ettringite in samples together with anhydrous phases, the scattering factors of all atoms including the H positions are indispensable. The revised structure model is based on the data of Moore and Taylor, supplemented by the H positions determined by Berliner (Material Science of Concrete Special Volume, The Sydney Diamond Symposium, American Ceramic, Society, 1998, pp. 127–141) on the basis of a neutron diffraction structural investigation of deuterated ettringite at 20 K. Berliner’s (Material Science of Concrete Special Volume, The Sydney Diamond Symposium, American Ceramic Society, 1998, pp. 127–141) thermal parameter should not, however, be used, since a normal application is at room temperature. In order further to improve the structure model of ettringite, Rietveld refinement with the rigid body approach for OH and H2O molecules and SO4 tetrahedra was employed. The refined and improved ettringite structure model was tested for quantitative phase analysis by the determination of actual ettringite contents in mixtures with an internal standard. Synthesized and orientation-free prepared ettringite powders were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction analysis and quantified in four different blends with zircon. The quantification results with the new structure model demonstrate the superior quality of the revised ettringite structure.

Rietveld refinement using neutron, laboratory X-ray, and synchrotron powder diffraction data of NIST SRM clinker 8488 was performed. Quantitative phase analysis (QPA) results were compared between data, and with other studies. QPA results for the main phases in the clinker were found to be in agreement between the different data used here, and in and other studies, although the QPA of the tricalcium silicate polymorphs was shown to be inconsistent. The QPA results for the tricalcium aluminate phase varied between data types, and the neutron data were unable to distinguish this phase.

The lattice parameters of α-alumina have been determined for temperatures in the range 20<T<1050 °C, using the lattice parameter of tungsten as a thermometer and a simple furnace in the diffractometer on the Australian beamline at the Photon Factory, Tsukuba, Japan. It is shown that the accuracy of this technique for measurement of cell parameters at temperatures up to ∼1200 °C is limited at present by uncertainty in the cell parameters of the reference material (i.e., tungsten) at high temperatures. Some problems with the equipment are discussed.

This work introduces a new simple approach to determine experimental X-ray elastic constants (XECs) of thin films by coupling the sin2ψ method and the substrate curvature technique. The approach is demonstrated on polycrystalline Cu thin films with the thickness 200, 800, and 2400 nm deposited on Si(100) substrates. Applying synchrotron radiation, the elastic strains in the films are determined using sin2ψ method while the macroscopic stresses are assessed by measuring the substrate curvature. The stresses are calculated using the Stoney formula from the radius of substrate curvature determined by the rocking curve measurement of substrate 400 reflection at different sample positions. Results show that the magnitude of the macroscopic stress in the films is proportional to the magnitude of the slope in the sin2ψ plots. On the basis of this observation, XECs of the films were calculated showing no dependence on the film thickness. The characterization of the samples was performed at the synchrotron source Hasylab.

This study examined basal peak irrationalities according to boundary conditions of the hectorite basal diffraction unit (BDU), which were recognized as the total assembly of 2:1 phyllosilicate layer plus interlayer material. The hectorite basal profiles were computer-simulated using the three kinds of BDU settings identified from the middle of octahedral sheets in the nearest neighbor (centrosymmetric model), the middle of interlayers in the nearest neighbor (centrosymmetric model), and a basal oxygen plane to the margin of interlayer in contact with the next phyllosilicate layer (non-centrosymmetric model). In the results of simulations, irrationality and asymmetry of the hectorite basal peaks relied straightforwardly on the BDU scattering modulations for the non-Bragg angles containing information on the synergic scattering events of phyllosilicate layer and interlayer material. Among the concerned BDU boundaries, the non-centrosymmetric model more effectively represented the real hectorite profile than the two previously reported centrosymmetric models.

Neutron diffraction studies were carried out to ascertain the structural details of the composition Ce0.5Nd0.5O1.750. The structure was unequivocally found to be that of C-type cubic. The refinement on an F-type cubic lattice was found to be unacceptable because of high R values. Selected bond distances are also being reported. In addition, the neutron diffraction studies on a typical defective F-type composition Ce0.75Nd0.25O1.875 were also carried out.

Single-phase samples of La1−xCaxMnO3 compounds have been synthesized by solid-state reaction. Detailed Rietveld analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data showed that La1−xCaxMnO3 undergoes a structural phase transformation from R-3c to Pnma at X=0.05–0.075. There is a linear variation of lattice parameters as a function of calcium concentration. The slope of this linear variation changes at X=0.6. A correlation between observed Mn-O bond lengths, corresponding to different compositions, and possible magnetic phases is discussed.

Crystallographic structures of two new orthophosphates Ca0.50SbFe(PO4)3 and CaSb0.50Fe1.50(PO4)3 obtained by conventional solid state reaction techniques at 900 °C, were determined at room temperature from X-ray powder diffraction using Rietveld analysis. The two compounds belong to the Nasicon structural family. The space group is R3 for Ca0.50SbFe(PO4)3 and R3c for CaSb0.50Fe1.50(PO4)3. Hexagonal cell parameters for Ca0.50SbFe(PO4)3 and CaSb0.50Fe1.50(PO4)3 are: a=8.257(1) Å, c=22.276(2) Å, and a=8.514(1) Å, c=21.871(2) Å, respectively. Ca2+ and vacancies in {[Ca0.50]3a[◻0.50]3b}M1SbFe(PO4)3 are ordered within the two positions, 3a and 3b, of M1 sites. Structure refinements show also a quasi-ordered distribution of Sb5+ and Fe3+ ions within the Nasicon framework. Thus, in {[Ca0.50]3a[◻0.50]3b}M1SbFe(PO4)3, each Ca(3a)O6 octahedron shares two faces with two Fe3+O6 octahedra and each vacancy (◻(3b)O6) site is located between two Sb5+O6 octahedra. In [Ca]M1Sb0.50Fe1.50(PO4)3 compound (R3c space group), all M1 sites are occupied by Ca2+ and the Sb5+ and Fe3+ ions are randomly distributed within the Nasicon framework.

X-ray powder diffraction data for the trigonal form of disilver trihydrogen paraperiodate, Ag2H3IO6, are reported. The cell parameters are a=5.941 89(3), c=12.7253(1) Å, V=389.089(6) Å3, and ρ=5.65 g cm−3 for Z=3. A full-profile Rietveld refinement confirms the monophasic nature of the sample and the presence of two-dimensional corrugated layers of the A2BO6 type linked by hydrogen bonds. Short unsupported Ag–Ag contacts (about 3.02 Å) of the argentophilic type are also shown.

The indexed powder diffraction pattern and related crystallographic data for polymorphic form 2 of carnidazole (C8H12N4O3S) are reported, as a first step in the structure determination by powder diffraction methods. The unit cell dimensions were determined from high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data (λ=0.079 998 0 nm) and evaluated by indexing programs. The monoclinic cell found for this polymorph is a=1.3908(2) nm, b=08094(2) nm, c=1.0645(2) nm, β=110.82(2)°,V=1.12015(27)nm3, Z=4, Dx=1.445 Mg∕m3.

Botallackite, Cu2(OH)3Cl, from the Botallack mining area in Cornwall, United Kingdom, has been reinvestigated regarding physical, optical, chemical, and X-ray powder diffraction data. It forms emerald-green tabular crystals slightly elongated along [010] with {001} (dominant), {100}, {010}, and {011}. Botallackite is biaxial positive, 2V=70(2)°, the optical orientation is Y∧c 22(2)° (in obtuse β), Z=b. Electron-microprobe analyses gave CuO 73.26, ZnO 0.22, Cl 16.80, H2O (calc) 12.37, total 102.65, less O=Cl 3.79, total 98.86 wt %, corresponding to the empirical formula Cu1.99Zn0.01(OH)2.97Cl1.03 (based on four anions). Unit cell parameters refined from X-ray powder diffraction data are a 5.7155(5), b 6.1255(6), c 5.6336(4) Å, β 93.090(8), V 196.95(2)Å3,Z=2.

A new polymorph of Al2(WO4)3 is observed from in situ high pressure powder X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) measurements at 3.4 GPa. The ADXRD pattern at 3.4 GPa could be explained based on a monoclinic lattice (space group P21) with unit cell parameters: a=9.5884(24), b=12.5204(38), c=7.8463(33) Å, and β=91.98(2)°.

The definitions for important Rietveld error indices are defined and discussed. It is shown that while smaller error index values indicate a better fit of a model to the data, wrong models with poor quality data may exhibit smaller values error index values than some superb models with very high quality data.

Neutron diffraction provides a direct probe for the ordering of spins from unpaired electrons in materials with magnetic properties. The ordering of the spins can be modeled in many cases by adding spin directions to standard crystallographic models. This requires, however, that crystallographic space groups be extended by addition of a “color” attribute to symmetry operations, which determines if the operation maintains or flips the direction of a magnetic spin. Rietveld analysis provides a mechanism for fitting magnetic structure models to powder diffraction data. The general structure and analysis system (GSAS) software suite is commonly used for Rietveld analysis and includes the ability to compute magnetic scattering. Different approaches are commonly used within GSAS to create models that include magnetism. Three equivalent but different approaches are presented to provide a tutorial on how magnetic scattering data may be modeled using differing treatment of symmetry. Also discussed is how magnetic models may be visualized. The commands used to run the GSAS programs are summarized within, but are shown in great detail in supplementary web pages.
