Premergence (PRE) herbicides were applied to a bermudagrass golf green overseeded with ‘Laser’ roughstalk bluegrass during 1995 and 1996 to determine their effects on roughstalk bluegrass injury and on the transition from a mixed cool- and warm-season grass back to the permanent bermudagrass. Roughstalk bluegrass tolerated single March applications of trifluralin plus benefin at 2.2 kg/ha, pendimethalin at 3.4 kg/ha, dithiopyr at 0.6 kg/ha, prodiamine at 0.8 kg/ha, bensulide plus oxadiazon at 8.4 kg/ha, and bensulide at 11.2 kg/ha. A single March application of oxadiazon plus benefin at 3.4 kg/ha severely injured (35%) the overseeded turf in 1 yr, but not when 1.7 kg/ha was applied in March and repeated in May. One-half recommended rates of oxadiazon and bensulide plus oxadiazon applied in March did not cause any undesirable injury, but when repeated in May, moderate to severe injury (28 to 33%) occurred in June. Oryzalin at ≥ 1.1 kg/ha, benefin plus oryzalin at ≥ 1.1 kg/ha, and oxyfluorfen plus oryzalin at ≥ 1.7 kg/ha severely injured (≥ 35%) roughstalk bluegrass. The rate of transition of mixed roughstalk bluegrass and bermudagrass back to permanent bermudagrass was not affected by any of the PRE herbicides except when oryzalin was applied alone or in combination with benefin or oxyfluorfen.

Three methods of predicting the impact of weed interference on crop yield and expected economic return were compared to evaluate the economic importance of weed spatial heterogeneity. Density of three weed species was obtained using a grid sampling scheme in 11 corn and 11 soybean fields. Crop yield loss was predicted assuming densities were homogeneous, aggregated following a negative binomial with known population mean and k, or aggregated with weed densities spatially mapped. Predicted crop loss was lowest and expected returns highest when spatial location of weed density was utilized to decide whether control was justified. Location-specific weed management resulted in economic gain as well as a reduction in the quantity of herbicide applied.

The tolerance of 10 broccoli cultivars to preemergence (PRE) applications of oxyfluorfen was evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments. Differences in tolerance among cultivars were expressed as differences in seedling injury ratings and growth and stand reduction. The cultivars ‘Pinnacle’ and ‘Mercedes’ were most tolerant, ‘Embassy’ and ‘Early Dawn’ were least tolerant, and other cultivars were intermediate in tolerance. Broccoli seedling weights and stand counts averaged across 10 cultivars and oxyfluorfen application rates of 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 kg/ha were 70 and 81% of control, respectively, for the two fall-planted experiments and 39 and 50% of control, respectively, for the spring-planted experiment. Differences in tolerance among cultivars were less distinct in the cooler spring than in the warmer fall season. Oxyfluorfen application that caused stand and early growth reduction did not always affect broccoli head weight or quality or delay harvest.

Devil's-claw and smellmelon are summer annual broadleaf weed problems in the southwest cotton production region. Field studies conducted in 1993 and 1994 evaluated the efficacy of pyrithiobac for postemergence (POST) control of devil's-claw and smellmelon compared with soil-applied fluometuron or prometryn. Pyrithiobac at 0.07 and 0.14 kg ai/ha early POST and 0.14 kg ai/ha mid-POST controlled devil's-claw more than 84% at the late rating. Devil's-claw control with mid-POST applications of pyrithiobac at 0.07 kg ai/ha was reduced when compared with other rates and application timings. Smellmelon control with pyrithiobac ranged from 57 to 84% and, except when applied at 0.07 kg ai/ha early POST, was equivalent to or greater than either fluometuron or prometryn. Crop injury with pyrithiobac treatments 16 d after treatment was 5 to 13%, but 33 d later, was no more than 3%.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate postemergence (POST)-applied tank mixtures of 560, 1,120, and 1,680 g ai/ha glyphosate with or without 1,120 g ai/ha SAN 582 (proposed name, dimethenamid) as burndown treatments or POST in glyphosate-tolerant soybean. SAN 582 was not antagonistic with glyphosate at the glyphosate rates evaluated. In the burndown study, glyphosate controlled horseweed 98% or more and curly dock 82% or more with or without SAN 582. However, broadleaf signalgrass emerged after the burndown treatments were applied. All tank mixtures that included SAN 582 controlled broadleaf signalgrass 84 to 96%, 6 wk after treatment. In the glyphosate-tolerant soybean study, glyphosate controlled barnyardgrass and johnsongrass present at the time of application 89% or more, regardless of rate. Tank mixtures of SAN 582 with glyphosate controlled late-season flushes of barnyardgrass through residual activity of the SAN 582. Applying SAN 582 with glyphosate improved soybean yield 500 kg/ha over glyphosate applied alone.

Asynchronous flowering was noted in a recently discovered infestation of siam weed in north Queensland. This may indicate some genetic diversity in the infestation, increasing concerns about the origin of the infestation. Internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequence data were obtained for siam weed individuals from north Queensland, Indonesia, Thailand, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Brazil, Colombia, and the U.S. The ITS1 region is 258 base pairs long, and the populations that flower at different times in north Queensland differ by four base substitutions. The genotype common in north Queensland is also reported throughout the native and introduced ranges. The other genotype is reported only in north Queensland and southern Brazil. These data, in conjunction with prior investigations into possible origins, indicate that Brazil is the most likely source of the infestation in Australia.

Field studies were conducted at three locations in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate weed control and crop response to combinations of glyphosate, metolachlor, 0.5 X and 1 X label rates of chlorimuron plus metribuzin applied prior to planting (PP), and 0.5 X and 1 X label rates of imazethapyr applied early postemergence (EPOST) or postemergence (POST) in no-till narrow-row soybean production. Giant foxtail densities were reduced with sequential PP followed by (fb) EPOST or POST treatments. Large crabgrass was reduced equivalently with all herbicide combinations involving chlorimuron plus metribuzin PP fb imazethapyr. Common cocklebur control was variable but was usually greater with treatments that included imazethapyr. Ivyleaf morningglory densities were not reduced with any herbicide combinations. Sequential PP fb EPOST or POST treatments tended to provide slightly better weed suppression than PP-only treatments, but the difference was rarely significant. Soybean yields with treatments utilizing 0.5 X rates were usually equal to 1 X rates.

The interactions of two fungal biocontrol agents, Alternaria cassiae and Pseudocercospora nigricans, and soybean planting density on sicklepod mortality and dry weight were studied in the field over 2 yr. The experimental field was divided into three equal areas: one without soybean and two where the soybean was sown in densities of 20 and 36 seeds per meter row with a 0.95-m row spacing. The fungi were sprayed alone or in a mixture at three growth stages of sicklepod plants grown at three levels of crop interference resulting from the three soybean planting densities. The fungal treatments were: an untreated control, A. cassiae (105 spores/m2), P. nigricans (3.3 g mycelium/m2), and the mixture of these two fungi. Sicklepod was at the cotyledonary leaf, two-leaf, and four-leaf stages when treated. Alternaria cassiae was most effective in reducing both sicklepod survival and dry weight. The mixture of P. nigricans and A. cassiae was generally comparable to but not better than A. cassiae alone in killing the weed (mortality) and reducing its growth (dry weight). Soybean density did not have significant effects on the mortality or the dry weight of sicklepod. Thus, there is no advantage to combining the highly effective biocontrol agent A. cassiae with the less effective P. nigricans or with soybean interference to control sicklepod. However, the results validate the efficacy of A. cassiae by itself as a bioherbicide.

The effect of DPX-79406 was evaluated on eight corn hybrids in 1993 and on 18 hybrids in 1994. Experiments were conducted each year at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and Stewiacke, Nova Scotia. Corn tolerance was similiar between sites but varied from year to year with certain hybrids. Generally, tolerance was hybrid dependent. Most hybrids displayed chlorosis and stunting 7 days after treatment (DAT) but recovered quickly. Injury at 7 DAT ranged from 8 to 64%. Grain yield indicated that ‘Pickseed 2444,’ ‘Pioneer 3921,’ ‘Pioneer 3979,’ and ‘DK 302’ were tolerant to 25 g ai/ha of DPX-79406. Pioneer 3979 and Pickseed 2444 grain yields were reduced with DPX-79406 at 50 g/ha in 1 yr. ‘DK 291’ and ‘DK 235’ were severely injured both years and did not recover appreciably from early injury. Responses of ‘Pioneer 3984’ and ‘Pickseed 2477’ varied from year to year, and they were considered sensitive to DPX-79406. ‘Pioneer 3947,’ ‘Pioneer 3962,’ ‘Pickseed 2290,’ ‘Pickseed 2299,’ ‘DK 220,’ ‘G-4011,’ and ‘N0565’ were tested only 1 yr and were tolerant to both rates of DPX-79406.

Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to determine the effect of atrazine and pendimethalin on velvetleaf competitiveness in corn. The three factors included in this research were herbicide, velvetleaf density (zero or nine plants per meter of row), and treatment (treated with herbicide or untreated). Herbicide treatments consisted of atrazine (0.6 and 1.1 kg/ha) or pendimethalin (0.6 and 1.1 kg/ha) applied preemergence. In 1992 and 1993, both atrazine and pendimethalin applied at 1.1 kg/ha greatly reduced velvetleaf growth and seed production and prevented velvetleaf from reducing corn yield. Both atrazine and pendimethalin applied at 0.6 kg/ha reduced velvetleaf growth and seed production in 1993, but only atrazine prevented yield loss in 1992. In the absence of velvetleaf, corn yield was not affected by either herbicide. These results indicate that sublethal exposure to atrazine or pendimethalin can significantly reduce velvetleaf competitiveness in corn.

The Arable Area Payments Scheme of the European Union has been in operation since 1992, paying farmers to set aside a portion of their arable land from production for 1 to 5 yr. Management of the land is prescribed, both in terms of timing and type. The scheme is potentially beneficial to the environment, as set-aside land can be used to improve bird, mammal, and insect habitats. However, environmental and agronomic objectives frequently conflict, particularly in the area of weed management. To predict weed growth and succession, a tool was required to model vegetation at set-aside sites using the key environmental factors, location, and soil that could account for differences in the weed species likely to be invasive. To this end, a Geographical Information System has been developed that links modeled species distributions to a model of successional change. The system has a simple menu structure allowing speedy manipulation of the data and models to predict the effects of management on the weed communities at known geographical locations.

Few postemergence (POST) herbicides are available for broad-spectrum weed control in pea. Field experiments were conducted to determine the suitability of imazamox to provide selective control of grass and broadleaf weeds in pea. Imazamox controlled several grass and broadleaf species, but the rate required to attain 90% control ranged from 7 to 36 g ai/ha depending on the weed species. Imazamox efficacy differed with the adjuvant included in the spray mixture. Merge adjuvant often increased imazamox activity on weeds more than Sun-It II methylated seed oil or a combination of Agral 90 adjuvant plus 28–0–0 liquid fertilizer. Pea exhibited excellent tolerance to imazamox up to the highest rate applied, 40 g/ha. Pea yield comparable to that of the hand-weeded control was attained with 20 to 30 g/ha of imazamox. Imazamox offers growers a POST option for broad-spectrum weed control in pea.

A study was conducted from 1994 through 1996 to evaluate barnyardgrass control, rice yield, and estimated economic returns with delayed preemergence (DPRE) applications of pendimethalin, quinclorac, thiobencarb, pendimethalin plus quinclorac, and pendimethalin plus thiobencarb applied alone or followed by postemergence (POST) applications of propanil or propanil plus molinate. Late-season barnyardgrass control with pendimethalin plus quinclorac was greater than with pendimethalin, quinclorac, thiobencarb, or pendimethalin plus thiobencarb. Control with pendimethalin, quinclorac, and pendimethalin plus thiobencarb exceeded that with thiobencarb. Propanil plus molinate controlled barnyardgrass more effectively than propanil. Quinclorac and pendimethalin plus quinclorac were the only DPRE herbicide treatments where yield and estimated economic returns were not improved by POST herbicides.

Shattercane seeds were collected in 1992 from 16 fields in southeastern and south-central Nebraska that had been treated for 3 consecutive yr with primisulfuron or nicosulfuron. Approximately 11,200 plants, from a total of 16,000 seeds (1,000 per field) planted, were evaluated for primisulfuron resistance in greenhouse screening. A single resistant plant was found. No other primisulfuron resistance was found in evaluating an additional 1,718 plants from the remaining seeds collected in 1992 from the field where the original resistant plant was found. Shattercane seeds were collected in 1993 and 1994 from that field. All 17,038 plants from these collections were killed by primisulfuron. A field assessment of 118 descendents of the original resistant plant (S1 progeny) produced three responses to primisulfuron at an approximate 1:2:1 ratio: (1) death; (2) some interveinal chlorosis; or (3) no visible injury or symptoms. Discovery of this resistant shattercane biotype indicates the potential for selection of primisulfuron-resistant shattercane populations under field conditions.

Field validation studies were conducted in seven Mississippi environments at three application timings to confirm postemergence (POST) recommendations generated by the computer herbicide decision aids HERB and SWC. HERB and SWC agreed on herbicide treatments in only 14% of the location–application timing combinations. Weed scientists involved in the study agreed on treatment recommendations approximately 33% of the time. The HERB model agreed with a faculty member on only one herbicide treatment, while the SWC model was slightly more agreeable in this regard. Subsequent weed flushes, varied production practices, and delayed weed emergence accounted for a majority of the underestimated predictions given by HERB. Only 55% of the predicted values presented for estimated weed control ratings were similar to actual weed control ratings. Over 75% of the predictions that differed from actual weed control values were underpredictions. Recommendations from both computer models were effective in reducing yield loss below that of the untreated check, and recommendations from the HERB model generally improved yield more than those from the SWC model in most instances. HERB and SWC predictions of yield losses with no weed control were not significantly different from the actual yield loss from the untreated check in nine of the 12 instances at Starkville, seven of the 12 instances at Brooksville, six of the 12 instances at Newton, and three of the six instances at Hollandale. The HERB model estimated yield loss similar to that of the actual yield loss 83% of the time, while predictions from the SWC model were accurate 76% of the time. HERB overestimated yield loss in six of 21 application timing–experiment combinations and underestimated yield loss only once. Yield loss was overpredicted as high as 78%. SWC overpredicted yield loss in five of 21 instances and also underestimated in five instances. SWC did not overpredict yield loss to the same magnitude as HERB in many instances.

In 1994, herbicide efficacy and competitive index databases were adjusted in the soybean herbicide recommendation program HERB to best reflect data for Mississippi. Field experiments were conducted to compare efficacy and economics of postemergence herbicides recommended by HERB and MSU-HERB. The study was conducted utilizing four locations over 2 yr, which provided different soil types, weed spectra, and environmental conditions with which to evaluate weed control from herbicides recommended by these programs. HERB and MSU-HERB agreed on an herbicide recommendation in 62% of the modeling runs. Herbicides recommended by both software versions were generally effective for controlling the predominant weed species at each location. In instances where there was a significant difference in herbicide efficacy between herbicides recommended by HERB and MSU-HERB, improved weed control resulted from herbicides recommended by MSU-HERB. In 1994, excellent moisture conditions enabled soybean to gain a significant competitive advantage over weeds and, as a result, yield loss predictions after treatment were overestimated in most instances. Conversely, 1995 environmental conditions better represented average Mississippi growing conditions, and yield loss predictions after treatment were more accurate. Yield loss prediction accuracy of HERB versions was related to the length of interference between soybean and weeds. Thus, prediction accuracy of HERB and MSU-HERB was similar. Soybean yield increase and net economic gain following MSU-HERB recommendations was as high or higher than following HERB recommendations.

Greenhouse and field experiments were initiated to evaluate rapeseed and mustard species as green manure crops for weed suppression. Under greenhouse conditions incorporating 20 g fresh wt leaf and stem tissue of rapeseed, two white mustards, and brown mustard into 450 g Sharpsburg, silty clay loam soil resulted in significant reductions in weed emergence, biomass, and height. Kochia, shepherd's-purse, and green foxtail emergences were reduced by all green manure crops. Redroot pigweed emergence was reduced by all green manure crops except brown mustard, and velvetleaf emergence was reduced by white mustards only. Kochia and shepherd's-purse fresh weights were reduced by all green manure crops, while redroot pigweed and velvetleaf fresh weights were reduced by brown mustard and white mustard var. Salvo. Green foxtail fresh weight was reduced by all green manure crops except rapeseed. With the exception of shepherd's-purse, no relationship between glucosinolate content of the incorporated green manure and suppression of weed growth was found. Under field conditions, early spring-planted green manure crops reduced early season weed biomass in soybean at one of the two locations. Mustard species as green manure crops reduced total weed biomass in soybean by 40% 4 weeks after emergence (WAE) and 49% 6 WAE. Soybean biomass and yield were sometimes reduced by the incorporation of green manure crops in treatments containing weeds; however, hand-weeded plots with green manure treatments yielded similar to hand-weeded plots without green manure.

A study was conducted in 1994 and 1995 at two Mississippi locations to evaluate preplant incorporated (PPI) and preemergence (PRE) applications of alachlor, clomazone, SAN 582, metolachlor, pendimethalin, and trifluralin, and postemergence (POST) applications of AC 263,222 and imazethapyr alone or followed by clethodim late postemergence (LPOST) for red rice control in soybean. Applications of 110 g ai/ha clethodim increased red rice control when following any earlier herbicide application at one location that harbored a high natural infestation. In 1 yr at one location, red rice seedhead suppression from PPI and PRE herbicide applications alone was greater than 95% due to high activity from herbicides and drought conditions during red rice seedhead development. Early postemergence (EPOST) applications of 30 g ae/ha AC 263,222 suppressed at least 95% of red rice seedheads, regardless of year, location, or clethodim LPOST application. At one location, any treatment where 110 g/ha clethodim followed an earlier herbicide application suppressed red rice seedheads at least 95%. Compared to the nontreated control, only AC 263,222 injured soybean (30%) and reduced soybean yield (200 kg/ha).

The effect of the sulfonylurea herbicides, bensulfuron, chlorsulfuron, nicosulfuron, primisulfuron, rimsulfuron, thifensulfuron, and triasulfuron, on seed germination and radicle elongation of the parasitic plant, Egyptian broomrape, was tested in vitro without a host plant. These herbicides applied to the seeds at the preconditioning and germination stages significantly reduced radicle elongation of the parasite. Chlorsulfuron, rimsulfuron, and triasulfuron were further tested in polyethylene bags, where the parasite was able to parasitize tomato roots. Chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron applied at 2.5 and 25 μM ai and rimsulfuron at 5.0 μM ai, at the preconditioning and germination stages, almost completely inhibited parasite development, but at lower concentrations the parasite partially recovered 26 days after application. Chlorsulfuron inhibited parasite development for 34 d. Chlorsulfuron, triasulfuron, and rimsulfuron damaged parasite organs and caused rapid death of Egyptian broomrape tubercles when applied after the parasite had completed attachment to host roots. However, chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron at 25 μM ai were toxic to the tomato plants.

A time course of Egyptian broomrape development on tomato roots grown in pots in the greenhouse revealed an increase in the number of parasitic attachments from 2.6 at 4 weeks after planting (WAP) to 139 when rated 2 wk later. Rimsulfuron sprayed on tomato foliage as single and split applications (12.5 g ai/ha) 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 WAP did not decrease Egyptian broomrape damage to tomato plants, as expressed by reduced tomato plant height and fresh weight, and the total number of parasitic attachments on the roots was not significantly different compared to the nontreated control. A single foliar application of rimsulfuron (25 g ai/ha) to tomato at 10 days after planting (DAP) and split applications at 10 and 20 and 10, 20, and 30 DAP significantly reduced the number of Egyptian broomrape inflorescences to 2.2, 0.2, and 0, respectively, 9 WAP compared with 19.6 inflorescences in the nontreated control. Application of the herbicide under the same conditions to tomato plants in pots covered with activated charcoal did not significantly influence the number of Egyptian broomrape inflorescences. Chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron applied directly to the soil at rates ≥ 3: 3.75 g ai/ha completely controlled Egyptian broomrape. Primisulfuron and chlorimuron, each at 22.5 g ai/ha, reduced the number of inflorescences to 0.6 and 0.4, respectively. Chlorimuron did not significantly reduce the total number of parasitic attachments on the roots, but primisulfuron at the same concentration significantly increased the total number of parasitic attachments on the root system to 50 as compared to 23 in the nontreated control. Tribenuron had no effect on the parasitism process, as reflected in the number of inflorescences and parasitic attachments on the roots.
