Mechanisms setting the density decay in the scrape-off layer (SOL) at the outer midplane of a tokamak plasma are disentangled using two-fluid numerical simulations in a double-null magnetic configuration and analytical estimates. Typical experimental observations are retrieved, in particular increasing intermittency of the turbulence going from the near to the far SOL, which is reflected in two different density decay lengths. The decay length of the near SOL is well described as the result of transport driven by a nonlinearly saturated ballooning instability, while in the far SOL, the density decay length is described using a model of intermittent transport mediated by blobs. The analytical estimates of the decay lengths agree well with the simulation results and typical experimental values and can therefore be used to guide tokamak design and operation.

Plasma terminating disruptions in tokamaks may result in relativistic runaway electron beams with potentially serious consequences for future devices with large plasma currents. In this paper, we investigate the effect of plasma elongation on the coupled dynamics of runaway generation and resistive diffusion of the electric field. We find that elongated plasmas are less likely to produce large runaway currents, partly due to the lower induced electric fields associated with larger plasmas, and partly due to direct shaping effects, which mainly lead to a reduction in the runaway avalanche gain.

Using particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate an improvement of the target-normal-sheath acceleration (TNSA) of protons in non-periodically nanostructured targets with micron-scale thickness. Compared to standard flat foils, an increase in the proton cutoff energy by up to a factor of two is observed in foils coated with nanocones or perforated with nanoholes. The latter nano-perforated foils yield the highest enhancement, which we show to be robust over a broad range of foil thicknesses and hole diameters. The improvement of TNSA performance results from more efficient hot-electron generation, caused by a more complex laser–electron interaction geometry and increased effective interaction area and duration. We show that TNSA is optimized for a nanohole distribution of relatively low areal density and that is not required to be periodic, thus relaxing the manufacturing constraints.

A non-parametric Gaussian process regression model is developed in the three-dimensional equilibrium reconstruction code V3FIT. A Gaussian process is a normal distribution of functions that is uniquely defined by specifying a mean function and covariance kernel function. Gaussian process regression assumes that an unknown profile belongs to a particular Gaussian process and uses Bayesian analysis to select the function the give the best fit to measured data. The implementation in V3FIT uses a hybrid representation where Gaussian processes are used to infer some of the equilibrium profiles and standard parametric techniques are used to infer the remaining profiles. The implementation of the Gaussian process is tested using both synthetic data and experimental data from multiple machines.

The shape gradient is a local sensitivity function defined on the surface of an object which provides the change in a characteristic quantity, or figure of merit, associated with a perturbation to the shape of the object. The shape gradient can be used for gradient-based optimization, sensitivity analysis and tolerance calculations. However, it is generally expensive to compute from finite-difference derivatives for shapes that are described by many parameters, as is the case for typical stellarator geometry. In an accompanying work (Antonsen, Paul & Landreman J. Plasma Phys., vol. 85 (2), 2019), generalized self-adjointness relations are obtained for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria. These describe the relation between perturbed equilibria due to changes in the rotational transform or toroidal current profiles, displacements of the plasma boundary, modifications of currents in the vacuum region or the addition of bulk forces. These are applied to efficiently compute the shape gradient of functions of MHD equilibria with an adjoint approach. In this way, the shape derivative with respect to any perturbation applied to the plasma boundary or coil shapes can be computed with only one additional MHD equilibrium solution. We demonstrate that this approach is applicable for several figures of merit of interest for stellarator configuration optimization: the magnetic well, the magnetic ripple on axis, the departure from quasisymmetry, the effective ripple in the low-collisionality 1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ regime (\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{\text{eff}}^{3/2})$(\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{\text{eff}}^{3/2})$ (Nemov et al. Phys. Plasmas, vol. 6 (12), 1999, pp. 4622–4632) and several finite-collisionality neoclassical quantities. Numerical verification of this method is demonstrated for the magnetic well figure of merit with the VMEC code (Hirshman & Whitson Phys. Fluids, vol. 26 (12), 1983, p. 3553) and for the magnetic ripple with modification of the ANIMEC code (Cooper et al. Comput. Phys. Commun., vol. 72 (1), 1992, pp. 1–13). Comparisons with the direct approach demonstrate that, in order to obtain agreement within several per cent, the adjoint approach provides a factor of O(10^{3})$O(10^{3})$ in computational savings.

We rescale the generalized Ohm’s law and consider the limits that imply the electric field which moves with an ideal (inviscid and perfectly conducting) plasma be proportional to the time rate of change of the current density. Therefore, we show that those limits are satisfied by a sufficiently low electron number density, n_{\text{e}}$n_{\text{e}}$. We also show that the electron–ion collision frequency, \unicode[STIX]{x1D708}_{\text{ei}}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}_{\text{ei}}$, is much smaller than the ion cyclotron frequency, \unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{\text{ci}}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{\text{ci}}$. The combination of that condition with the Lawson criterion for a typical deuterium–tritium fusion in ITER reveals a lower bound for the geometric mean of the confinement time, \unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{\text{C}}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{\text{C}}$, and collision interval, \sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{\text{C}}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}_{\text{ei}}}\gg 10^{-5}~\text{s}$\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{\text{C}}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}_{\text{ei}}}\gg 10^{-5}~\text{s}$. For that reaction, we estimate that n_{\text{e}}\sim 10^{19}~\text{m}^{-3}$n_{\text{e}}\sim 10^{19}~\text{m}^{-3}$, and contrast typical parameters of our fully ionized gas with those of warm, hot and thermonuclear plasmas. When, in addition, n_{\text{e}}$n_{\text{e}}$ varies slowly in time and weakly in space, we generalize Alfvén’s theorem, by showing that the frozen-in condition holds true for an effective magnetic field, which depends on a finite electron skin depth. We perform a (divergenceless) helical perturbation on an axisymmetric equilibrium, to derive a dispersion relation in the cylindrical tokamak limit, and, subsequently, apply our analytical formulation to the peaked model, which assumes a logarithmic derivative profile for the poloidal component of the equilibrium magnetic field. In that formulation, the definition of the safety factor in terms of the effective field yields a shift in the magnetic surfaces. We find that the instability peak may triple that predicted on neglect of a finite electron mass. We also find that inertial effects may centuple the radius of the stable cylindrical column.

A novel derivation of the parallel ion velocity, and the bootstrap and Pfirsch–Schlüter currents in an imperfectly optimized (that is, almost omnigenous) stellarator magnetic field, \boldsymbol{B}$\boldsymbol{B}$, is presented that somewhat more generally recovers expressions completely consistent with previous analytic results. However, it is also shown that, when the conventional radially local form of the drift kinetic equation is employed, the flow velocity and the bootstrap current acquire a spurious contribution proportional to \unicode[STIX]{x1D714}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$, where \unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$ denotes the \boldsymbol{E}\times \boldsymbol{B}$\boldsymbol{E}\times \boldsymbol{B}$ rotation frequency (due to the radial electric field \boldsymbol{E}$\boldsymbol{E}$) and \unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ the collision frequency. This contribution is particularly large in the \sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}}$\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}}$ regime and at smaller collisionalities, where \unicode[STIX]{x1D714}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}\gtrsim 1$\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}\gtrsim 1$, and is presumably present in most numerical calculations, but it disappears if a more accurate drift kinetic equation is used.

A direct construction of equilibrium magnetic fields with toroidal topology at arbitrary order in the distance from the magnetic axis is carried out, yielding an analytical framework able to explore the landscape of possible magnetic flux surfaces in the vicinity of the axis. This framework can provide meaningful analytical insight into the character of high-aspect-ratio stellarator shapes, such as the dependence of the rotational transform and the plasma beta limit on geometrical properties of the resulting flux surfaces. The approach developed here is based on an asymptotic expansion on the inverse aspect ratio of the ideal magnetohydrodynamics equation. The analysis is simplified by using an orthogonal coordinate system relative to the Frenet–Serret frame at the magnetic axis. The magnetic field vector, the toroidal magnetic flux, the current density, the field line label and the rotational transform are derived at arbitrary order in the expansion parameter. Moreover, a comparison with a near-axis expansion formalism employing an inverse coordinate method based on Boozer coordinates (the so-called Garren–Boozer construction) is made, where both methods are shown to agree at lowest order. Finally, as a practical example, a numerical solution using a W7-X equilibrium is presented, and a comparison between the lowest-order solution and the W7-X magnetic field is performed.

This paper investigates the motion of three-dimensional ideal magnetohydrodynamics with incompressible flows. The governing equation is performed at steady state, with the magnetic field parallel to the plasma flow. The equations of stationary equilibrium are derived and described mathematically in Cartesian space. Two approaches for derivation of general three-dimensional solutions for Alfvénic and non-Alfvénic flows at constant and variable fluid densities are constructed. The general vector and scalar potentials of the velocity field are used to derive general formulas of general three-dimensional solutions for Alfvénic and non-Alfvénic flows. To verify the general results we have obtained, some examples are presented. An application that may be of interest for coronal loops and solar prominences is presented.

The deviation from thermodynamic equilibrium of the ion velocity distribution functions (VDFs), as measured by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission in the Earth’s turbulent magnetosheath, is quantitatively investigated. Making use of the unprecedented high-resolution MMS ion data, and together with Vlasov–Maxwell simulations, this analysis aims at investigating the relationship between deviation from Maxwellian equilibrium and typical plasma parameters. Correlations of the non-Maxwellian features with plasma quantities such as electric fields, ion temperature, current density and ion vorticity are found to be similar in magnetosheath data and numerical experiments, with a poor correlation between distortions of ion VDFs and current density, evidence that questions the occurrence of VDF departure from Maxwellian at the current density peaks. Moreover, strong correlation has been observed with the magnitude of the electric field in the turbulent magnetosheath, while a certain degree of correlation has been found in the numerical simulations and during a magnetopause crossing by MMS. This work could help shed light on the influence of electrostatic waves on the distortion of the ion VDFs in space turbulent plasmas.

We present an energy-conserving discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the full-f$f$ electromagnetic gyrokinetic system in the long-wavelength limit. We use the symplectic formulation and solve directly for \unicode[STIX]{x2202}A_{\Vert }/\unicode[STIX]{x2202}t$\unicode[STIX]{x2202}A_{\Vert }/\unicode[STIX]{x2202}t$, the inductive component of the parallel electric field, using a generalized Ohm’s law derived directly from the gyrokinetic equation. Linear benchmarks are performed to verify the implementation and show that the scheme avoids the Ampère cancellation problem. We perform a nonlinear electromagnetic simulation in a helical open-field-line system as a rough model of the tokamak scrape-off layer using parameters from the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). This is the first published nonlinear electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulation on open field lines. Comparisons are made to a corresponding electrostatic simulation.

In recent years, several optimal dynamos have been discovered. They minimize the magnetic energy dissipation or, equivalently, maximize the growth rate at a fixed magnetic Reynolds number. In the optimal dynamo of Willis (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 109, 2012, 251101), we find mean-field dynamo action for planar averages. One component of the magnetic field grows exponentially while the other decays in an oscillatory fashion near onset. This behaviour is different from that of an \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}^{2}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}^{2}$ dynamo, where the two non-vanishing components of the planar averages are coupled and have the same growth rate. For the Willis dynamo, we find that the mean field is excited by a negative turbulent magnetic diffusivity, which has a non-uniform spatial profile near onset. The temporal oscillations in the decaying component are caused by the corresponding component of the diffusivity tensor being complex when the mean field is decaying and, in this way, time dependent. The growing mean field can be modelled by a negative magnetic diffusivity combined with a positive magnetic hyperdiffusivity. In two other classes of optimal dynamos of Chen et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 783, 2015, pp. 23–45), we find, to some extent, similar mean-field dynamo actions. When the magnetic boundary conditions are mixed, the two components of the planar averaged field grow at different rates when the dynamo is 15 % supercritical. When the mean magnetic field satisfies homogeneous boundary conditions (where the magnetic field is tangential to the boundary), mean-field dynamo action is found for one-dimensional averages, but not for planar averages. Despite having different spatial profiles, both dynamos show negative turbulent magnetic diffusivities. Our finding suggests that negative turbulent magnetic diffusivities may support a broader class of dynamos than previously thought, including these three optimal dynamos.

The head-on collision between two dust-acoustic solitary waves in a non-magnetized, collisionless and strongly coupled dust plasma has been studied. The application scope of the analytical solution of the head-on collision is given in the present paper by using the particle-in-cell simulation method. It is noted that the analytical results are valid if the amplitudes of both of the solitary waves are small enough. The effects of the coupling parameters on both the head-on collision and the waveform are also studied in the present paper.
