Let R be the pullback A ×cB, where B → C is a surjective homomorphism of commutative rings and A is a subring of C. It is shown that R and C are Hilbert rings if and only if A and B are Hilbert rings. Applications are given to the D + XE[X], D + M, and D + (X1,..., Xn)Ds[X1,..., Xn] constructions. For these constructions, new examples are given of Hilbert domains R which are unruly, in the sense that R is non-Noetherian and each of its maximal ideals is finitely generated. Related examples are also given.

Let X be a complete metric space. Viewing continuous real functions on X as closed subsets of X × R, equipped with Hausdorff distance, we show that C(X, R) is completely metrizable provided X is complete and sigma compact. Following the Bulgarian school of constructive approximation theory, a bounded discontinuous function may be identified with its completed graph, the set of points between the upper and lower envelopes of the function. We show that the space of completed graphs, too, is completely metrizable, provided X is locally connected as well as sigma compact and complete. In the process, when X is a Polish space, we provide a simple answer to the following foundational question: which subsets of X × R arise as completed graphs?

The main purpose of this paper is to prove, that the topology of any (non-complete) algebra norm on a JB* -algebra is stronger than the topology of the usual norm. The proof of this theorem consists of an adaptation of the recent Rodriguez proof [8] that every homomorphism from a complex normed (associative) Q-algebra onto a B*-algebra is continuous.

Chern and Hamilton considered the integral of the Webster scalar curvature as a functional on the set of CR-structures on a compact 3-dimensional contact manifold. Critical points of this functional can be viewed as Riemannian metrics associated to the contact structure for which the characteristic vector field generates a 1-parameter group of isometries i.e. K-contact metrics. Tanno defined a higher dimensional generalization of the Webster scalar curvature, computed the critical point condition of the corresponding integral functional and found that it is not the K-contact condition. In this paper two other generalizations are given and the critical point conditions of the corresponding integral functionals are found. For the second of these, this is the K-contact condition, suggesting that it may be the proper generalization of the Webster scalar curvature.

We provide vector analogues of the classical interpolation theorems for lower semicontinuous functions due to Dowker and to Hahn and Katetov-Tong.

We generalize the notion of t-orthogonality in p-adic Banach spaces by introducing t-frames (§2). This we use to prove that a Fréchet-Montel (FM-)space is of countable type (Theorem 3.1), the non-archimedeancounterpart of a well known theorem in functional analysis over ℝ or ℂ ([6], p. 231). We obtain several characterizations of FM-spaces (Theorem 3.3) and characterize the nuclear spaces among them (§4).

We consider the directed graph representing the obstruction relation between objects moving along the streamlines of a two-dimensional velocity field. A collection of objects is sequentially separable if and only if the corresponding graph has no directed cycles. A sufficient condition for this is the permeability of closed Jordan curves.

There have been a number of papers which give necessary conditions for a ring to be finite, and a few, most notably H. E. Bell [1], which do the same for near-rings. We wish to make a contribution to this latter theme. Most of Bell's results concern distributive near-rings. Our main contribution is to extend a number of these results to weakly distributive near-rings.

This presentation concerns the relation of chain conditions on a space X, with the weights of compact sets in Cp(X), generalizing up to the class of dσ-bounded spaces, or stable spaces. In the last case, stronger results are obtained for Corson compact subsets of CP(X).

Let X be a projective nonsingular variety over a real closed field R such that the set X(R) of R-rational points of X is nonempty. Let ClR(X) = Cl(X)/Γ(X), where Cl(X) is the group of classes of linearly equivalent divisors on X and Γ(X) is the subgroup of Cl(X) consisting of the classes of divisors whose restriction to some neighborhood of X(R) in X is linearly equivalent to 0. It is proved that the group ClR(X) is isomorphic to (Z/2)s for some non-negative integer s. Moreover, an upper bound on s is given in terms of the Z/2-dimension of the group cohomology modules of Gal(C/R), where , with values in the Néron-Severi group and the Picard variety of Xc = X xR C.

Let R be a prime ring of characteristic not equal to two and let T be an automorphism of R. If U is a Lie ideal of R such that T is nontrivial on U and xxT — xTx is in the center of R for every x in U, then U is contained in the center of R.

Dans ce travail, on étudie les propriétés de la conorme, c(a) d'un élément a d'une C*-algèbre A. Nous montrons que c(a) est aussi douée de la condition de B*- algèbre, c'est-à-dire qu'elle vérifie l'égalité: c(a)2 = c(a*a) = c(aa*) = c(a*)2. Nous remarquons que la conorme est invariante par restriction à toute sous-C*-algèbre de A, propriété connue pour le spectre.

Using second epi derivatives, we introduce a generalized second fundamental form for Lipschitzian hypersurfaces. In the case of a convex hypersurface, our approach leads back to the classical second fundamental form, which is usually obtained from the second fundamental forms of the outer parallel surfaces by means of a limit procedure.

A complete lattice L is constructively completely distributive,(CCD)(L), if the sup map defined on down closed subobjects has a left adjoint. We characterize preservation of this property by left exact functors between toposes using a "logical comparison transformation". The characterization is applied to (direct images of) geometric morphisms to show that local homeomorphisms (in particular, product functors) preserve (CCD) objects, while preserving (CCD) objects implies openness.

Let be polynomials orthogonal with respect to different distributions. Conditions are given which imply that the coefficients in the expansion of Pn in terms of Q0, Q1,..., Qn are non-negative.

A separable metric space X is called rigid if the identity 1X is the only autohomeomorphism, and homogeneous if, for any points x, y of X, there is an (onto) homeomorphism h: X → X such that h(x) = y.

In this note, we show that this onto-ness of the homeomorphism h could not be removed in the definition of homogeneity, by constructing a continuum X which is rigid and has many embeddings, that is, for any two points x, y, there is an embedding (= into homeomorphism) h: X→X such that h(x) = y.

The main result of this paper is a theorem about three conies in the complex or the real complexified projective plane. Is this theorem new? We have never seen it anywhere before. But since the golden age of projective geometry so much has been published about conies that it is unlikely that no one noticed this result. On the other hand, why does it not appear in the literature? Anyway, it seems interesting to "repeat" this property, because several theorems in connection with straight lines and (or) conies in projective, affine or euclidean planes are in fact special cases of this theorem. We give a few classical examples: the theorems of Pappus-Pascal, Desargues, Pascal (or its converse), the Brocard points, the point of Miquel. Finally, we have never seen in the literature a proof of these theorems using the same short method see the proof of the main theorem).
