    I thanke you for your care and paines in sendinge your Servant to preserve the Rights of your Colledge and your Visitour. And first whereas, they pretend that this Commission was gotten with my consent; it is alltogether untrue. His Brothers pretence unto me was, that he had gotten out a Commission to examine his Witnesses upon Oath to give the Colledge and mee the better satisfaction. That hee had gotten this Commission, not that hee would. Soe I knewe nothinge. Nor had I any reason to beleive they ment to take out any Commission at all: and least of all such a Commission as should offer such open Violence to your Statuts and the power given mee by them.

    But since I understand by you what they have done. These are to lett you knowe, that I have petitioned his Majesty in the Cause of the Colledge Right and myne owne. And that his Majesty very gratiousley hath recall’d the Commission, and is not well pleasd, that hee should be soe abusd by an ill grounded petition. These are therefore to requier you to take notice of this, and to acquaint the Fellowes whom it maye any waye concerne, and to chardge them that they keepe their Statuts and their Oathes unto them: And that neither your selfe nor any of them give any appearance before that voyded Commission; but keepe your selves intyrely to your Visitour.

    And concerninge Mr Harrington, I have heere sent you by your Servant my Summons for his appearance att the daie therein appointed, under my Seale and in forme of Lawe. This Instrument you are to hange upp upon your Chappell dore and when that is taken downe to hange upp a Coppy of it there, and lett it continewe; accordinge as you shall see the Instrument it selfe direct you in the beginninge. Which course I requier you to followe, (unless you shall find any thinge in the Instrument or in this course of proceedinge, that shalbe contrary to your Statuts which I shalbee ever tender to preserve.)     My very good Lord.

    Before the returne of my last Letters, I sawe there was in my owne iudgment a great mistake, concerning the Statute which gives way to the Bishopps in Ulster to lett Leases for 60 yeares, but it was a thinge quite forgotten by myselfe and not observed by any other Lords of the Committee that the Plantation was in those parts, and thatt the Tenants had in being already more then twice one and twenty yeares, and therfore would not renewe for one and twenty. I am glad my Lord Deputy hath sent backe the Statute, and I will certainly doe the best I can, that it may be kept in force, and those Bishopps have the benefitt of it. As for the Clause concerning the Lord Deputy, and the Councells consent, I confesse I did not understand the reason of that, till these your Letters came. Namely that you could not trust one of your Company for Succession, and I pray faile not in your next Letters, to send me word whoe that one is, not that I have any purpose to hurt him, were it in my power, but that I thinke it may be very fitt in many respect I should knowe him.

    I doe easily beleeve the alienations of Church Possessions, have been both many and unconscionable in that Kingdome. England hath been badd enough for that, and therfore I may easily conceave Ireland, hath been much worse. And had not my Lord Deputy been very hearty in all these Services which belong to the Church, there could not have been such remedy in many yeares, as is nowe God be thanked likely to be in fore.

    I have received the note which you sent enclosed conteining the true state, and value of the Appropriations yet remaining to the Crowne in Ireland, together with the Copy of the Petition of the Clergie; when it comes over with authority to the Kinge, I shalbe the more ready, and furnished, to doe the Church the best service I can in that great particular, which I have soe long and soe heartily desired to see finished, if God shalbe pleased soe farre to blesse me, a[nd] and my endeavors.     I have long had itt in my Thoughts to speake with you about S. Paules Church; But the busines of these two last Termes hath lyen so heavy upon mee, that it left mee noe Leisure to speake seriously to you about it; And to speake only in a sudden, and Cursory way with you, I did not hold any way fitting, or proportionable either to my owne Desyres, or the Noblenes of your Disposition to Workes of that Nature. The Truth is, God hath blest you with a Great fortune, and you live in a Noble, and Generous way with it. And therefore I would heartily pray you, to Open your hand freely to this Magnificent Worke, the Re-edifying of St. Paules Church, which God and the King have sett me upon. And because it would be too large to Expresse some Particulars, which yet I think fit you should Consider of, I should take it for a great deale of Kindnes and Respect to Mee, would you be pleased sometime to morrow morning to Come over to Lambeth and speake with mee; for I shall be gone to Croidon toward the Evening.     Whereas his majestie hath beene pleased to give you direction (amongst other thinges) to præpare for his royall signature a bill for the setling and uniting of the rectory impropriate of Saint Thomas, and certaine tenements in the towne and county of Haverfordwest, upon and to the church of Saint Thomas there, and for the making of the same a rectory presentative in his majesties personall donation, and the then Curate of the same church (there being no vicaridg endowed) to be the first Rectour of the same. Now forasmuch as since his majesties said direction and before any settlement of the premisses the then Curate of the said church is dead, his majestie is pleased that Francis Robinson clerk shalbe the first Rectour of the said church.     When I writt last to my Lord Deputy, you had had an Answer to your Letters of November 2 but that I was cutt so shorte in tyme, as that it was then noe way possible for mee to write. Now my Lord I thanke you for your Good Newes, That your Diocesse being in the middest of the Scotch Plantations hath beene all this while soe quiet. I doubt it would hardly have Continued soe, if you had not Cast out the Young Prophetesse. For her Marriage since, let it fall out, as it may; but if her Husband should chance to pervert her, what would the Brethren say then?

    I am very sorry to heare what you write Concerning the Bishop of Kilmore. For if it be true, he hath Certainly brought himselfe in greate danger of the Law. But I will keepe it in Silence, as you desire, till I heare farther Certaynty from you. And if it be his Melancholy that hath brought him to it, he had neede pray against it as you doe. As for his Leases I have taken notice of itt, and written fairely to him aboute it. The Letter you shall finde here inclosed. And it is with an Open flying Seale. So you may reede the Letter, and either Burne itt, if you like it not: Or if you like it, one drop of waxe will fasten the Seale, and soe you may deliver it.     As I am mye Lord, and as the Cuntrye phrase is for want of a better, thess account I can give you. For Dr. Carrs busynes since I writt last I have spoken with mye Lord of Durham, and I hope somewhat to good purpose will be done. That is, if Mr. Smart be deprived, ether a prebend in Durham, or a verye good one in Yorke, maye be had. Yorke is Nearer you, it will be done bye Exchaunge without farther suit of yours, soe it be carryed privatelye. you maye easelye guess whye. If Mr. Smart reconcile himselfe to the church then your newe suite for the next prebend that shall become voyde is much stucke at; but I writt unto you in mye last that I had taken a rubb out your waye, which is true: But I have left it in mye Lord of Durhams waye still as not havinge bine solicited bye hime to take it out, and out he cannot take it but bye me I thinke: If anye thinge secure thiss busynes, that must be it. ‘Tis to longe to wright, but soe soone as you come you will see it verye cleare for ought I can discover.

    Dr. Hooke, hangs bye the Hookes still in the Highe Commission. It pittyes me to see hime theare for his aige, degree, and profession sake. They have nowe thiss Tearme chardged hime with two or three severall Adulteryes more with severall women. And (which savours ill to the Court) the Doctor doth not make hast enoughe to putt in his answear, which breeds Jealousye of guilt. If he wear myne enemye I should praye he might come of well from such a taint: But if these things appeare he will be remediless.

    In January 1377 John de Southeray and Mary Percy were married in full splendour before the court of Edward III. John was the illegitimate son of the king and his notorious mistress, Alice Perrers, while Mary was Alice's ward. The marriage was not to last long, however. Within just a few months Edward III had died and Alice, no longer protected by the king, was put on trial for corruption in the opening parliament of Richard II's reign. Despite her protestations of innocence, she was found guilty and sentenced to forfeiture and banishment from the realm. Following Alice's downfall, a petition was submitted to the Pope on behalf of Mary Percy for a divorce from Southeray on the grounds of his illegitimate birth. This essay sets out the course of Mary and John's relationship, from Mary's becoming a royal ward in 1369 until their final separation in 1380. In doing so, it provides a case study for research into royal wardship, marriage and divorce in late fourteenth-century England, highlighting the significance of wardship as a tool of power and patronage and the perceived status and position of royal bastards within late medieval political society. Uncovering these complex political and personal motivations provides new insights into the wider criticisms being levelled at the crown and government during the 1370s, and the perceived role that Edward III's relationship with Alice had on the breakdown of royal authority. Furthermore, it suggests that a more nuanced understanding is needed of how events unfolded during the Good Parliament of spring 1376, and, in particular, of the role played by Mary's half-brother, Henry Percy, the future first earl of Northumberland.

    John de Southeray was one of three children of Edward III and his mistress Alice Perrers. It is not known exactly when John and his two sisters, Joan and Jane, were born. For a long time it was presumed that John's date of birth was around the time in 1366 when the king granted Alice an annuity of two tuns of Gascon wine: ostensibly for her ‘good service’ to Edward's queen consort, Philippa of Hainault, but clearly a reflection of her intimate relationship with the king.

    Women had a recognised role in pre-industrial European society which varied according to the geographic location and their social standing. Although a substantial body of research is now available, secondary literature on the role of women in Maltese society and economic life is conspicuously absent. This is both an obstacle and a challenge for interpreting primary sources in legal archives. The case study presented in this chapter aims to stimulate discussion on the subject and investigate how the change of ruler in 1530 affected the economic role of women in Maltese society.

    In 1536 Jean Quintin d'Autun wrote about Maltese women: ‘not at all ugly, but [they] live very much as if they were uncivilized; they do not mix with other people; they go out covered in a veil, as if to see a woman is here the same as to violate her’. How much did prevailing attitudes towards women, who, from d'Autun's description, seem to have been quite secluded from the rest of society, affect their economic activity? Were they passive in the face of many exhortations to obedience? Is there any indication of the consequences of the Catholic Reformation, when women's obedience and role in the family underwent a significant transformation? Can any distinction be detected between the elite and lower echelons, or between spinsters, married women and widows? What particular economic activities are recorded for female foreign settlers? Did Maltese women have the same attitude to business undertakings as their foreign counterparts? The following discussion does not look at female slavery and prostitution. Although these were thriving activities in the harbour area, the subject merits study in its own right, due to its peculiarity.

    In order to validate the arguments presented here and place them in context, the existing framework of women's legal persona needs to be constructed from notarial references and the prevailing laws. The sample of notarial registers consulted was chosen on the following criteria: the notary in question practised in Birgu; the volumes were in a good state of preservation; both Rhodiot and Maltese notaries are represented in the sample.

    How much weaker in the eyes of the law?

    The legal systems and law codes of early modern Europe reflected prevailing theories and perceptions of women, based mainly on traditional notions of the weaknesses of the female sex.

    Alexander (the legend of)

  • • The origins of this correspondence lie in the debate between Alexander and the Brahmins, transmitted in Greek and Latin in a variety of witnesses, among which is the so-called Commonitorium Palladii, a text attributed to Palladius of Galatia, Bishop of Helenopolis (4th–5th century ad). The Collatio takes its inspiration from a passage in the Commonitorium in which King Dindimus pledges to write to Alexander (Ross 1963: 30–2). The epistolary exchange consists of five letters: three, including the opening and closing ones, from Alexander, the other two from Dindimus. Apart from this version, which can be found independently or at times appended to Julius Valerius's Epitome, there are two further versions: one of these (Collatio III; →➁ below, Leo of Naples) is interpolated in the Historia de preliis and is the source for T2. For the reception of the legend of Alexander in all European literatures (except Catalan) see Gaullier-Bougassas (2014).

    The Catalan translation stems from the abridged Latin version included in Vincent of Beauvais's Speculum historiale, which adds a further letter at the beginning of the text to the five gathered in the Collatio (Ivars 1928: 157). In Vincent's text this letter is from the Brahmins to Alexander, but in the Catalan translation it is from King Dindimus, as is clear from the manuscript rubric (Ivars 1928: 161). Ivars dated this text to the mid-15th century (1928: 159), unaware that it was an excerpt from Jaume Domènec's late 14th-century Compendi historial (→VINCENT OF BEAUVAIS).
