We prove a conjectural formula for the Brumer–Stark units. Dasgupta and Kakde have shown the formula is correct up to a bounded root of unity. In this paper, we resolve the ambiguity in their result. We also remove an assumption from Dasgupta–Kakde’s result on the formula.

The aim of this paper is to study circular units in the compositum K of t cyclic extensions of ${\mathbb {Q}}$ ( $t\ge 2$ ) of the same odd prime degree $\ell $ . If these fields are pairwise arithmetically orthogonal and the number s of primes ramifying in $K/{\mathbb {Q}}$ is larger than $t,$ then a nontrivial root $\varepsilon $ of the top generator $\eta $ of the group of circular units of K is constructed. This explicit unit $\varepsilon $ is used to define an enlarged group of circular units of K, to show that $\ell ^{(s-t)\ell ^{t-1}}$ divides the class number of K, and to prove an annihilation statement for the ideal class group of K.

In 1965, A. Livingston conjectured the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-linear independence of logarithms of values of the sine function at rational arguments. In 2016, S. Pathak disproved the conjecture. In this article, we give a new proof of Livingston’s conjecture using some fundamental trigonometric identities. Moreover, we show that a stronger version of her theorem is true. In fact, we modify this conjecture by introducing a co-primality condition, and in that case we provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for the conjecture to be true. Finally, we identify a maximal linearly independent subset of the numbers considered in Livingston’s conjecture.

The aim of this paper is to study the group of elliptic units of a cyclic extension $L$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the degree $[L:K]$ is a power of an odd prime $p$. We construct an explicit root of the usual top generator of this group, and we use it to obtain an annihilation result of the $p$-Sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of $L$.

We collect some statements regarding equivalence of the parities of various class numbers and signature ranks of units in prime power cyclotomic fields. We correct some misstatements in the literature regarding these parities by providing an example of a prime cyclotomic field where the signature rank of the units and the signature rank of the circular units are not equal.

Let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ be Galois and let $\eta \,\in \,{{K}^{\times }}$ be such that $\text{Re}{{\text{g}}_{\infty }}\left( \eta \right)\,\ne \,0$. We define the local $\theta $-regulator $\Delta _{p}^{\theta }\left( \eta \right)\,\in \,{{\mathbb{F}}_{p}}$ for the ${{\mathbb{Q}}_{p}}$-irreducible characters $\theta $ of $G=\,\text{Gal}\left( K/\mathbb{Q} \right)$. Let ${{V}_{\theta }}$ be the $\theta $-irreducible representation. Each $\Delta _{p}^{\theta }\left( \eta \right)$ yields $\text{R}eg_{p}^{\theta }\left( \eta \right)$ modulo $p$ in the factorization ${{\Pi }_{\theta }}{{\left( \text{Reg}_{p}^{\theta }\left( \eta \right) \right)}^{\phi \left( 1 \right)}}$ of $\text{Reg}_{p}^{G}\,\left( \eta \right)\,:=\frac{\text{Re}{{\text{g}}_{p}}\left( \eta \right)}{_{p}[K\,:\,\mathbb{Q}]}$ (normalized $p$-adic regulator). From Prob $\left( \Delta _{p}^{\theta }\left( \eta \right)=0\,\text{and}\,{{\mathfrak{L}}^{\theta }}\simeq \delta {{V}_{\theta }} \right)\,\le {{p}^{-f{{\delta }^{2}}}}$ ($f\,\ge \,1$ is a residue degree) and the Borel-Cantelli heuristic, we conjecture that for $p$ large enough, $\text{Reg}_{p}^{G}\left( \eta \right)$ is a $p$-adic unit or ${{p}^{\phi \left( 1 \right)}}\,||\,\text{Reg}_{p}^{G}\left( \eta \right)$ (a single $\theta $ with $f\,=\,\delta \,=\,1$); this obstruction may be led assuming the existence of a binomial probability law confirmed through numerical studies (groups ${{C}_{3,}}\,{{C}_{5}},\,{{D}_{6}}$) is conjecture would imply that for all $p$ large enough, Fermat quotients, normalized $p$-adic regulators are $p$-adic units and that number fields are $p$-rational.We recall some deep cohomological results that may strengthen such conjectures.

We formulate a conjecture which generalizes Darmon’s ‘refined class number formula’. We discuss relations between our conjecture and the equivariant leading term conjecture of Burns. As an application, we give another proof of the ‘except $2$-part’ of Darmon’s conjecture, which was first proved by Mazur and Rubin.

We study lens space surgeries along two different families of 2-component links, denoted by ${A}_{m, n} $ and ${B}_{p, q} $, related with the rational homology $4$-ball used in J. Park’s (generalized) rational blow down. We determine which coefficient $r$ of the knotted component of the link yields a lens space by Dehn surgery. The link ${A}_{m, n} $ yields a lens space only by the known surgery with $r= mn$ and unexpectedly with $r= 7$ for $(m, n)= (2, 3)$. On the other hand, ${B}_{p, q} $ yields a lens space by infinitely many $r$. Our main tool for the proof are the Reidemeister-Turaev torsions, that is, Reidemeister torsions with combinatorial Euler structures. Our results can be extended to the links whose Alexander polynomials are same as those of ${A}_{m, n} $ and ${B}_{p, q} $.

In this paper we extend K. Rubin's methods to prove the Gras conjecture for abelian extensions of a given imaginary quadratic field $k$ and prime numbers $p$ that divide the number of roots of unity in $k$.

In this paper, we construct (many) Kolyvagin systems out of Stickelberger elements utilizing ideas borrowed from our previous work on Kolyvagin systems of Rubin-Stark elements. The applications of our approach are twofold. First, assuming Brumer’s conjecture, we prove results on the odd parts of the ideal class groups of CM fields which are abelian over a totally real field, and we deduce Iwasawa’s main conjecture for totally real fields (for totally odd characters). Although this portion of our results has already been established by Wiles unconditionally (and refined by Kurihara using an Euler system argument, when Wiles’s work is assumed), the approach here fits well in the general framework the author has developed elsewhere to understand Euler/Kolyvagin system machinery when the core Selmer rank is r > 1 (in the sense of Mazur and Rubin). As our second application, we establish a rather curious link between the Stickelberger elements and Rubin-Stark elements by using the main constructions of this article hand in hand with the “rigidity” of the collection of Kolyvagin systems proved by Mazur, Rubin, and the author.

We use the theory of Kolyvagin systems to prove (most of) a refined class number formula conjectured by Darmon. We show that, for every odd prime p, each side of Darmon’s conjectured formula (indexed by positive integers n) is ‘almost’ a p-adic Kolyvagin system as n varies. Using the fact that the space of Kolyvagin systems is free of rank one over ℤp, we show that Darmon’s formula for arbitrary n follows from the case n=1, which in turn follows from classical formulas.

The main theorem of the author’s thesis suggests that it should be possible to lift the Kolyvagin systems of Stark units, constructed by the author in an earlier paper, to a Kolyvagin system over the cyclotomic Iwasawa algebra. In this paper, we verify that this is indeed the case. This construction of Kolyvagin systems over the cyclotomic Iwasawa algebra from Stark units provides the first example towards a more systematic study of Kolyvagin system theory over an Iwasawa algebra when the core Selmer rank (in the sense of Mazur and Rubin) is greater than one. As a result of this construction, we reduce the main conjectures of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields to a statement in the context of local Iwasawa theory, assuming the truth of the Rubin–Stark conjecture and Leopoldt’s conjecture. This statement in the local Iwasawa theory context turns out to be interesting in its own right, as it suggests a relation between the solutions to p-adic and complex Stark conjectures.

Let K be an imaginary quadratic field and let F be an abelian extension of K. It is known that the order of the class group ClF of F is equal to the order of the quotient UF/ElF of the group of global units UF by the group of elliptic units ElF of F. We introduce a filtration on UF/ElF made from the so-called truncated Euler systems and conjecture that the associated graded module is isomorphic, as a Galois module, to the class group. We provide evidence for the conjecture using Iwasawa theory.

We show that the extrapolation to the case of global fields of characteristic p of a question posed by Stark in 1980, regarding abelian L-functions of order of vanishing 2 at s = 0, has a negative answer. We provide links between various versions of Stark's question and a natural refinement of Brumer's conjecture, in the general context of global fields of arbitrary characteristic. As a consequence, we show that the refinement of Brumer's conjecture is, in general, false for characteristic p global fields.

Let $K$ be a finite Galois extension of the field of rational numbers with unit rank greater than 3. We prove that the ring of integers of $K$ is a Euclidean domain if and only if it is a principal ideal domain. This was previously known under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis for Dedekind zeta functions. We now prove this unconditionally.

Let $d\,>\,1$ be a square-free integer. Power residue criteria for the fundamental unit ${{\varepsilon }_{d}}$ of the real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ modulo a prime $p$ (for certain $d$ and $p$) are proved by means of class field theory. These results will then be interpreted as criteria for the solvability of the negative Pell equation ${{x}^{2}}\,-\,d{{p}^{2}}{{y}^{2}}\,=\,-1$. The most important solvability criterion deals with all $d$ for which $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ has an elementary abelian 2-class group and $p\,\equiv \,5$ (mod 8) or $p\,\equiv \,9$ (mod 16).

Continued fractions associated with $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{3}}\left( \mathbf{Z} \right)$ are introduced and applied to find fundamental units in a two-parameter family of complex cubic fields.

Let d be a square-free positive integer and l(d) be the period length of the simple continued fraction expansion of ωd, where ωd is integral basis of ℤ[]. Let εd = (td + ud)/2 (> 1) be the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field ℚ(). In this paper new lower bounds for εd, td, and ud are described in terms of l(d). The lower bounds of εd are sharper than the known bounds and those of td and ud have been yet unknown. In order to show the strength of the method of the proof, some interesting examples of d are given for which εd and Yokoi’s d-invariants are determined explicitly in relation to continued fractions of the form .

In this paper we find a formula for the Alexander polynomial ${{\Delta }_{p1,...,{{p}_{k}}\left( x \right)}}$ of pretzel knots and links with $\left( {{p}_{1}},...,{{p}_{k}},-1 \right)$ twists, where $k$ is odd and ${{p}_{1}},...,{{p}_{k}}$ are positive integers. The polynomial ${{\Delta }_{2,3,7}}\left( x \right)$ is the well-known Lehmer polynomial, which is conjectured to have the smallest Mahler measure among all monic integer polynomials. We confirm that ${{\Delta }_{2,3,7}}\left( x \right)$ has the smallest Mahler measure among the polynomials arising as ${{\Delta }_{p1,...,{{p}_{k}}\left( x \right)}}$.
