For $E \subset \mathbb {N}$, a subset $R \subset \mathbb {N}$ is E-intersective if for every $A \subset E$ having positive relative density, $R \cap (A - A) \neq \varnothing $. We say that R is chromatically E-intersective if for every finite partition $E=\bigcup _{i=1}^k E_i$, there exists i such that $R\cap (E_i-E_i)\neq \varnothing $. When $E=\mathbb {N}$, we recover the usual notions of intersectivity and chromatic intersectivity. We investigate to what extent the known intersectivity results hold in the relative setting when $E = \mathbb {P}$, the set of primes, or other sparse subsets of $\mathbb {N}$. Among other things, we prove the following: (1) the set of shifted Chen primes $\mathbb {P}_{\mathrm {Chen}} + 1$ is both intersective and $\mathbb {P}$-intersective; (2) there exists an intersective set that is not $\mathbb {P}$-intersective; (3) every $\mathbb {P}$-intersective set is intersective; (4) there exists a chromatically $\mathbb {P}$-intersective set which is not intersective (and therefore not $\mathbb {P}$-intersective).

Let $(X,\mu ,T,d)$ be a metric measure-preserving dynamical system such that three-fold correlations decay exponentially for Lipschitz continuous observables. Given a sequence $(M_k)$ that converges to $0$ slowly enough, we obtain a strong dynamical Borel–Cantelli result for recurrence, that is, for $\mu $-almost every $x\in X$,

Let G be a group and let V be an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field K. Let A denote the set of K-points of V. We introduce algebraic sofic subshifts ${\Sigma \subset A^G}$ and study endomorphisms $\tau \colon \Sigma \to \Sigma $. We generalize several results for dynamical invariant sets and nilpotency of $\tau $ that are well known for finite alphabet cellular automata. Under mild assumptions, we prove that $\tau $ is nilpotent if and only if its limit set, that is, the intersection of the images of its iterates, is a singleton. If moreover G is infinite, finitely generated and $\Sigma $ is topologically mixing, we show that $\tau $ is nilpotent if and only if its limit set consists of periodic configurations and has a finite set of alphabet values.

Given a dynamical system, we prove that the shortest distance between two n-orbits scales like n to a power even when the system has slow mixing properties, thus building and improving on results of Barros, Liao and the first author [On the shortest distance between orbits and the longest common substring problem. Adv. Math. 344 (2019), 311–339]. We also extend these results to flows. Finally, we give an example for which the shortest distance between two orbits has no scaling limit.

In this paper, we study almost proximal extensions of minimal flows. Let $\pi : (X,T)\rightarrow (Y,T)$ be an extension of minimal flows. Then $\pi $ is called an almost proximal extension if there is some $N\in {\mathbb N}$ such that the cardinality of any almost periodic subset in each fiber is not greater than N. When $N=1$, $\pi $ is proximal. We will give the structure of $\pi $ and give a dichotomy theorem: any almost proximal extension of minimal flows is either almost finite to one, or almost all fibers contain an uncountable strongly scrambled subset. Using the category method, Glasner and Weiss showed the existence of proximal but not almost one-to-one extensions [On the construction of minimal skew products. Israel J. Math. 34 (1979), 321–336]. In this paper, we will give explicit such examples, and also examples of almost proximal but not almost finite to one extensions.

We study recurrence in the real quadratic family and give a sufficient condition on the recurrence rate $(\delta _n)$ of the critical orbit such that, for almost every non-regular parameter a, the set of n such that $\vert F^n(0;a) \vert < \delta _n$ is infinite. In particular, when $\delta _n = n^{-1}$, this extends an earlier result by Avila and Moreira [Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family. Ann. of Math. (2) 161(2) (2005), 831–881].

Let X be a compact metric space and let $f: X\!\rightarrow \! X$ be a homeomorphism on X. We show that if f is both pointwise recurrent and expansive, then the dynamical system $(X, f)$ is topologically conjugate to a subshift of some symbolic system. Moreover, if f is pointwise positively recurrent, then the subshift is semisimple; a counterexample is given to show the necessity of positive recurrence to ensure the semisimplicity.

Let $(X_k)_{k\geq 0}$ be a stationary and ergodic process with joint distribution $\mu $ , where the random variables $X_k$ take values in a finite set $\mathcal {A}$ . Let $R_n$ be the first time this process repeats its first n symbols of output. It is well known that $({1}/{n})\log R_n$ converges almost surely to the entropy of the process. Refined properties of $R_n$ (large deviations, multifractality, etc) are encoded in the return-time $L^q$ -spectrum defined as

provided the limit exists. We consider the case where $(X_k)_{k\geq 0}$ is distributed according to the equilibrium state of a potential with summable variation, and we prove that

where $P((1-q)\varphi )$ is the topological pressure of $(1-q)\varphi $ , the supremum is taken over all shift-invariant measures, and $q_\varphi ^*$ is the unique solution of $P((1-q)\varphi ) =\sup _\eta \int \varphi \,d\eta $ . Unexpectedly, this spectrum does not coincide with the $L^q$ -spectrum of $\mu _\varphi $ , which is $P((1-q)\varphi )$ , and it does not coincide with the waiting-time $L^q$ -spectrum in general. In fact, the return-time $L^q$ -spectrum coincides with the waiting-time $L^q$ -spectrum if and only if the equilibrium state of $\varphi $ is the measure of maximal entropy. As a by-product, we also improve the large deviation asymptotics of $({1}/{n})\log R_n$ .

We prove a number of results about countable Borel equivalence relations with forcing constructions and arguments. These results reveal hidden regularity properties of Borel complete sections on certain orbits. As consequences they imply the nonexistence of Borel complete sections with certain features.

For any $r\in [0,1]$ we give an example of a rigid operator whose spectrum is the annulus $\{\lambda\in \mathbb{C} : r \le |\lambda| \le 1 \} $ . In particular, when $r=0$ this operator is rigid and non-invertible, and when $r\in {\kern1pt}] 0,1 [ $ this operator is invertible but its inverse is not rigid. This answers two questions of Costakis, Manoussos and Parissis [Recurrent linear operators. Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 8 (2014), 1601–1643].

We investigate to what extent a minimal topological dynamical system is uniquely determined by a set of return times to some open set. We show that in many situations, this is indeed the case as long as the closure of this open set has no non-trivial translational symmetries. For instance, we show that under this assumption, two Kronecker systems with the same set of return times must be isomorphic. More generally, we show that if a minimal dynamical system has a set of return times that coincides with a set of return times to some open set in a Kronecker system with translationarily asymmetric closure, then that Kronecker system must be a factor. We also study similar problems involving nilsystems and polynomial return times. We state a number of questions on whether these results extend to other homogeneous spaces and transitive group actions, some of which are already interesting for finite groups.

We study the asymptotic dynamics of piecewise-contracting maps defined on a compact interval. For maps that are not necessarily injective, but have a finite number of local extrema and discontinuity points, we prove the existence of a decomposition of the support of the asymptotic dynamics into a finite number of minimal components. Each component is either a periodic orbit or a minimal Cantor set and such that the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$-limit set of (almost) every point in the interval is exactly one of these components. Moreover, we show that each component is the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$-limit set, or the closure of the orbit, of a one-sided limit of the map at a discontinuity point or at a local extremum.

In this paper we analyse the non-wandering set of one-dimensional Greenberg–Hastings cellular automaton models for excitable media with $e\geqslant 1$ excited and $r\geqslant 1$ refractory states and determine its (strictly positive) topological entropy. We show that it results from a Devaney chaotic closed invariant subset of the non-wandering set that consists of colliding and annihilating travelling waves, which is conjugate to a skew-product dynamical system of coupled shift dynamics. Moreover, we determine the remaining part of the non-wandering set explicitly as a Markov system with strictly less topological entropy that also scales differently for large $e,r$.

There is much research on the dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, the Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure), etc. However, this is not the case from the viewpoint of chaos. There are many results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos. However, positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos, called DC1. Therefore, it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In this paper, we will show that, for dynamical systems with specification properties, there exist uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in irregular sets and level sets. Meanwhile, we prove that several recurrent level sets of points with different recurrent frequency have uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets. The major argument in proving the above results is that there exists uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in saturated sets.

Given an integer $n\,\ge \,3$, a metrizable compact topological $n$-manifold $X$ with boundary, and a finite positive Borel measure $\mu$ on $X$, we prove that for the typical homeomorphism $f:\,X\,\to \,X$, it is true that for $\mu$-almost every point $x$ in $X$ the restriction of $f$ (respectively of ${{f}^{-1}}$) to the omega limit set $\omega \left( f,\,x \right)$ (respectively to the alpha limit set $\alpha \left( f,\,x \right)$) is topologically conjugate to the universal odometer.

We study recurrence and transience for Lévy processes induced by topological transformation groups acting on complete Riemannian manifolds. In particular the transience–recurrence dichotomy in terms of potential measures is established and transience is shown to be equivalent to the potential measure having finite mass on compact sets when the group acts transitively. It is known that all bi-invariant Lévy processes acting in irreducible Riemannian symmetric pairs of noncompact type are transient. We show that we also have ‘harmonic transience’, that is, local integrability of the inverse of the real part of the characteristic exponent which is associated to the process by means of Gangolli’s Lévy–Khinchine formula.

Given an integer $n\,\ge \,3$, a metrizable compact topological $n$-manifold $X$ with boundary, and a finite positive Borel measure $\mu $ on $X$, we prove that for the typical homeomorphism $f\,:\,X\,\to \,X$, it is true that for $\mu $-almost every point $x$ in $X$ the limit set $\omega (f,\,x)$ is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero, each point of $\omega (f,\,x)$ has a dense orbit in $\omega (f,\,x)$, $f$ is non-sensitive at each point of $\omega (f,\,x)$, and the function $a\,\to \,\omega (f,\,a)$ is continuous at $x$.

We give some extension to theorems of Jiménez López and Soler López concerning the topological characterization for limit sets of continuous flows on closed orientable surfaces.

Let $M$ be a complete flat Lorentz 3-manifold $M$ with purely hyperbolic holonomy $\Gamma $. Recurrent geodesic rays are completely classified when $\Gamma $ is cyclic. This implies that for any pair of periodic geodesics ${{\gamma }_{1}}$, ${{\gamma }_{2}}$, a unique geodesic forward spirals towards ${{\gamma }_{1}}$ and backward spirals towards ${{\gamma }_{2}}$.

We show that a continuous map of a metric space is pointwise recurrent and has the pseudo orbit tracing property if and only if the map is uniformly conjugate to an adding-machine-like map restricted to some invariant subset.
