We revisit processes generated by iterated random functions driven by a stationary and ergodic sequence. Such a process is called strongly stable if a random initialization exists for which the process is stationary and ergodic, and for any other initialization the difference of the two processes converges to zero almost surely. Under some mild conditions on the corresponding recursive map, without any condition on the driving sequence we show the strong stability of iterations. Several applications are surveyed such as generalized autoregression and queuing. Furthermore, new results are deduced for Langevin-type iterations with dependent noise and for multitype branching processes.

We continue with the systematic study of the speed of extinction of continuous-state branching processes in Lévy environments under more general branching mechanisms. Here, we deal with the weakly subcritical regime under the assumption that the branching mechanism is regularly varying. We extend recent results of Li and Xu (2018) and Palau et al. (2016), where it is assumed that the branching mechanism is stable, and complement the recent articles of Bansaye et al. (2021) and Cardona-Tobón and Pardo (2021), where the critical and the strongly and intermediate subcritical cases were treated, respectively. Our methodology combines a path analysis of the branching process together with its Lévy environment, fluctuation theory for Lévy processes, and the asymptotic behaviour of exponential functionals of Lévy processes. Our approach is inspired by the last two previously cited papers, and by Afanasyev et al. (2012), where the analogue was obtained.

A comparison theorem for state-dependent regime-switching diffusion processes is established, which enables us to pathwise-control the evolution of the state-dependent switching component simply by Markov chains. Moreover, a sharp estimate on the stability of Markovian regime-switching processes under the perturbation of transition rate matrices is provided. Our approach is based on elaborate constructions of switching processes in the spirit of Skorokhod’s representation theorem varying according to the problem being dealt with. In particular, this method can cope with switching processes in an infinite state space and not necessarily of birth–death type. As an application, some known results on the ergodicity and stability of state-dependent regime-switching processes can be improved.

We feature results on global survival and extinction of an infection in a multi-layer network of mobile agents. Expanding on a model first presented in Cali et al. (2022), we consider an urban environment, represented by line segments in the plane, in which agents move according to a random waypoint model based on a Poisson point process. Whenever two agents are at sufficiently close proximity for a sufficiently long time the infection can be transmitted and then propagates into the system according to the same rule starting from a typical device. Inspired by wireless network architectures, the network is additionally equipped with a second class of agents able to transmit a patch to neighboring infected agents that in turn can further distribute the patch, leading to chase–escape dynamics. We give conditions for parameter configurations that guarantee existence and absence of global survival as well as an in-and-out of the survival regime, depending on the speed of the devices. We also provide complementary results for the setting in which the chase–escape dynamics is defined as an independent process on the connectivity graph. The proofs mainly rest on percolation arguments via discretization and multiscale analysis.

We consider the simple random walk on the d-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d \geq 1$), traveling in potentials which are Bernoulli-distributed. The so-called Lyapunov exponent describes the cost of traveling for the simple random walk in the potential, and it is known that the Lyapunov exponent is strictly monotone in the parameter of the Bernoulli distribution. Hence the aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of the potential on the Lyapunov exponent more precisely, and we derive some Lipschitz-type estimates for the difference between the Lyapunov exponents.

We consider a stochastic SIR (susceptible $\rightarrow$ infective $\rightarrow$ removed) model in which the infectious periods are modulated by a collection of independent and identically distributed Feller processes. Each infected individual is associated with one of these processes, the trajectories of which determine the duration of his infectious period, his contamination rate, and his type of removal (e.g. death or immunization). We use a martingale approach to derive the distribution of the final epidemic size and severity for this model and provide some general examples. Next, we focus on a single infected individual facing a given number of susceptibles, and we determine the distribution of his outcome (number of contaminations, severity, type of removal). Using a discrete-time formulation of the model, we show that this distribution also provides us with an alternative, more stable method to compute the final epidemic outcome distribution.

In this paper, we analyze a two-queue random time-limited Markov-modulated polling model. In the first part of the paper, we investigate the fluid version: fluid arrives at the two queues as two independent flows with deterministic rate. There is a single server that serves both queues at constant speeds. The server spends an exponentially distributed amount of time in each queue. After the completion of such a visit time to one queue, the server instantly switches to the other queue, i.e., there is no switch-over time.

For this model, we first derive the Laplace–Stieltjes transform (LST) of the stationary marginal fluid content/workload at each queue. Subsequently, we derive a functional equation for the LST of the two-dimensional workload distribution that leads to a Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem (BVP). After taking a heavy-traffic limit, and restricting ourselves to the symmetric case, the BVP simplifies and can be solved explicitly.

In the second part of the paper, allowing for more general (Lévy) input processes and server switching policies, we investigate the transient process limit of the joint workload in heavy traffic. Again solving a BVP, we determine the stationary distribution of the limiting process. We show that, in the symmetric case, this distribution coincides with our earlier solution of the BVP, implying that in this case the two limits (stationarity and heavy traffic) commute.

Under the assumption that sequences of graphs equipped with resistances, associated measures, walks and local times converge in a suitable Gromov-Hausdorff topology, we establish asymptotic bounds on the distribution of the $\varepsilon$ -blanket times of the random walks in the sequence. The precise nature of these bounds ensures convergence of the $\varepsilon$ -blanket times of the random walks if the $\varepsilon$ -blanket time of the limiting diffusion is continuous at $\varepsilon$ with probability 1. This result enables us to prove annealed convergence in various examples of critical random graphs, including critical Galton-Watson trees and the Erdős-Rényi random graph in the critical window. We highlight that proving continuity of the $\varepsilon$ -blanket time of the limiting diffusion relies on the scale invariance of a finite measure that gives rise to realizations of the limiting compact random metric space, and therefore we expect our results to hold for other examples of random graphs with a similar scale invariance property.

We study the so-called frog model on ${\mathbb{Z}}$ with two types of lazy frogs, with parameters $p_1,p_2\in (0,1]$ respectively, and a finite expected number of dormant frogs per site. We show that for any such $p_1$ and $p_2$ there is positive probability that the two types coexist (i.e. that both types activate infinitely many frogs). This answers a question of Deijfen, Hirscher, and Lopes in dimension one.

In this paper we consider the one-dimensional, biased, randomly trapped random walk with infinite-variance trapping times. We prove sufficient conditions for the suitably scaled walk to converge to a transformation of a stable Lévy process. As our main motivation, we apply subsequential versions of our results to biased walks on subcritical Galton–Watson trees conditioned to survive. This confirms the correct order of the fluctuations of the walk around its speed for values of the bias that yield a non-Gaussian regime.

We introduce a multivariate class of distributions with support I, a k-orthotope in $[0,\infty)^{k}$ , which is dense in the set of all k-dimensional distributions with support I. We call this new class ‘multivariate finite-support phase-type distributions’ (MFSPH). Though we generally define MFSPH distributions on any finite k-orthotope in $[0,\infty)^{k}$ , here we mainly deal with MFSPH distributions with support $[0,1)^{k}$ . The distribution function of an MFSPH variate is computed by using that of a variate in the MPH $^{*} $ class, the multivariate class of distributions introduced by Kulkarni (1989). The marginal distributions of MFSPH variates are found as FSPH distributions, the class studied by Ramaswami and Viswanath (2014). Some properties, including the mixture property, of MFSPH distributions are established. Estimates of the parameters of a particular class of bivariate finite-support phase-type distributions are found by using the expectation-maximization algorithm. Simulated samples are used to demonstrate how this class could be used as approximations for bivariate finite-support distributions.

This paper gives a self-contained proof of the non-existence of nontrivial bi-infinite geodesics in directed planar last-passage percolation with exponential weights. The techniques used are couplings, coarse graining, and control of geodesics through planarity and estimates derived from increment-stationary versions of the last-passage percolation process.

We investigate the long-time behavior of the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process driven by Lévy noise with regime switching. We provide explicit criteria on the transience and recurrence of this process. Contrasted with the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process driven simply by Brownian motion, whose stationary distribution must be light-tailed, both the jumps caused by the Lévy noise and the regime switching described by a Markov chain can derive the heavy-tailed property of the stationary distribution. The different role played by the Lévy measure and the regime-switching process is clearly characterized.

We consider the nearest-neighbour simple exclusion process on the one-dimensional discrete torus $\mathbb{T}_N=\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ , with random rates $c_N=\{c_{x,N}\colon x \in \mathbb{T}_N\}$ defined in terms of a homogeneous Poisson process on $\mathbb{R}$ with intensity $\lambda$ . Given a realization of the Poisson process, the jump rate along the edge $\{x,x+1\}$ is 1 if there is not any Poisson mark in $ (x,x+1) $ ; otherwise, it is $\lambda/N,\, \lambda \in( 0,1]$ . The density profile of this process with initial measure associated to an initial profile $\rho_0\colon \mathbb{R} \rightarrow [0,1]$ , evolves as the solution of a bounded diffusion random equation. This result follows from an appropriate quenched hydrodynamic limit. If $\lambda=1$ then $\rho$ is discontinuous at each Poisson mark with passage through the slow bonds, otherwise the conductance at the slow bonds decreases meaning no passage through the slow bonds in the continuum. The main results are concerned with upper and lower quenched and annealed bounds of $T_j$ , where $T_j$ is the first displacement time of a tagged particle in a stochastic cluster of size j (the cluster is defined via specific macroscopic density profiles). It is possible to observe that when time t grows, then $\mathbb{P}\{T_j \geq t\}$ decays quadratically in both the upper and lower bounds, and falls as slow as the presence of more Poisson marks neighbouring the tagged particle, as expected.

We obtain a central limit theorem, local limit theorems and renewal theorems for stationary processes generated by skew product maps $T(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714},x)=(\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}\unicode[STIX]{x1D714},T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}x)$ together with a $T$-invariant measure whose base map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ satisfies certain topological and mixing conditions and the maps $T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}$ on the fibers are certain non-singular distance-expanding maps. Our results hold true when $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ is either a sufficiently fast mixing Markov shift with positive transition densities or a (non-uniform) Young tower with at least one periodic point and polynomial tails. The proofs are based on the random complex Ruelle–Perron–Frobenius theorem from Hafouta and Kifer [Nonconventional Limit Theorems and Random Dynamics. World Scientific, Singapore, 2018] applied with appropriate random transfer operators generated by $T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}$, together with certain regularity assumptions (as functions of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$) of these operators. Limit theorems for deterministic processes whose distributions on the fibers are generated by Markov chains with transition operators satisfying a random version of the Doeblin condition are also obtained. The main innovation in this paper is that the results hold true even though the spectral theory used in Aimino, Nicol and Vaienti [Annealed and quenched limit theorems for random expanding dynamical systems. Probab. Theory Related Fields162 (2015), 233–274] does not seem to be applicable, and the dual of the Koopman operator of $T$ (with respect to the invariant measure) does not seem to have a spectral gap.

Martingales constitute a basic tool in stochastic analysis; this paper considers their application to counting processes. We use this tool to revisit a renewal theorem and give extensions for various counting processes. We first consider a renewal process as a pilot example, deriving a new semimartingale representation that differs from the standard decomposition via the stochastic intensity function. We then revisit Blackwell’s renewal theorem, its refinements and extensions. Based on these observations, we extend the semimartingale representation to a general counting process, and give conditions under which asymptotic behaviour similar to Blackwell’s renewal theorem holds.

We study a variant of Gilbert's disc model, in which discs are positioned at the points of a Poisson process in ℝ2 with radii determined by an underlying stationary and ergodic random field φ:ℝ2→[0,∞), independent of the Poisson process. This setting, in which the random field is independent of the point process, is often referred to as geostatistical marking. We examine how typical properties of interest in stochastic geometry and percolation theory, such as coverage probabilities and the existence of long-range connections, differ between Gilbert's model with radii given by some random field and Gilbert's model with radii assigned independently, but with the same marginal distribution. Among our main observations we find that complete coverage of ℝ2 does not necessarily happen simultaneously, and that the spatial dependence induced by the random field may both increase as well as decrease the critical threshold for percolation.

One model of real-life spreading processes is that of first-passage percolation (also called the SI model) on random graphs. Social interactions often follow bursty patterns, which are usually modelled with independent and identically distributed heavy-tailed passage times on edges. On the other hand, random graphs are often locally tree-like, and spreading on trees with leaves might be very slow due to bottleneck edges with huge passage times. Here we consider the SI model with passage times following a power-law distribution ℙ(ξ>t)∼t-α with infinite mean. For any finite connected graph G with a root s, we find the largest number of vertices κ(G,s) that are infected in finite expected time, and prove that for every k≤κ(G,s), the expected time to infect k vertices is at most O(k1/α). Then we show that adding a single edge from s to a random vertex in a random tree 𝒯 typically increases κ(𝒯,s) from a bounded variable to a fraction of the size of 𝒯, thus severely accelerating the process. We examine this acceleration effect on some natural models of random graphs: critical Galton--Watson trees conditioned to be large, uniform spanning trees of the complete graph, and on the largest cluster of near-critical Erdős‒Rényi graphs. In particular, at the upper end of the critical window, the process is already much faster than exactly at criticality.

We are interested in a large queue in a GI/G/k queue with heterogeneous servers. For this, we consider tail asymptotics and weak limit approximations for the stationary distribution of its queue length process in continuous time under a stability condition. Here, two weak limit approximations are considered. One is when the variances of the interarrival and/or service times are bounded, and the other is when they become large. Both require a heavy-traffic condition. Tail asymptotics and heavy-traffic approximations have been separately studied in the literature. We develop a unified approach based on a martingale produced by a good test function for a Markov process to answer both problems.

We consider Markov processes, which describe, e.g. queueing network processes, in a random environment which influences the network by determining random breakdown of nodes, and the necessity of repair thereafter. Starting from an explicit steady-state distribution of product form available in the literature, we note that this steady-state distribution does not provide information about the correlation structure in time and space (over nodes). We study this correlation structure via one-step correlations for the queueing-environment process. Although formulas for absolute values of these correlations are complicated, the differences of correlations of related networks are simple and have a nice structure. We therefore compare two networks in a random environment having the same invariant distribution, and focus on the time behaviour of the processes when in such a network the environment changes or the rules for travelling are perturbed. Evaluating the comparison formulas we compare spectral gaps and asymptotic variances of related processes.
