In a multitype branching process, it is assumed that immigrants arrive according to a non-homogeneous Poisson or a contagious Poisson process (both processes are formulated as a non-homogeneous birth process with an appropriate choice of transition intensities). We show that the normalized numbers of objects of the various types alive at time t for supercritical, critical, and subcritical cases jointly converge in distribution under those two different arrival processes. Furthermore, we provide some transient expectation results when there are only two types of particles.

We consider the Voronoi diagram generated by n independent and identically distributed $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ -valued random variables with an arbitrary underlying probability density function f on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ , and analyze the asymptotic behaviors of certain geometric properties, such as the measure, of the Voronoi cells as n tends to infinity. We adapt the methods used by Devroye et al. (2017) to conduct a study of the asymptotic properties of two types of Voronoi cells: (1) Voronoi cells that have a fixed nucleus; (2) Voronoi cells that contain a fixed point. We show that the geometric properties of both types of cells resemble those in the case when the Voronoi diagram is generated by a homogeneous Poisson point process. Additionally, for the second type of Voronoi cells, we determine the limiting distribution, which is universal in all choices of f, of the re-scaled measure of the cells.

Let Sn,n≥1, be the successive sums of the payoffs in the classical St. Petersburg game. The celebrated Feller weak law states that Sn∕(nlog2n)→ℙ1 as n→∞. In this paper we review some earlier results of ours and extend some of them as we consider an asymmetric St. Petersburg game, in which the distribution of the payoff X is given by ℙ(X=srk-1)=pqk-1,k=1,2,…, where p+q=1 and s,r>0. Two main results are extensions of the Feller weak law and the convergence in distribution theorem of Martin-Löf (1985). Moreover, it is well known that almost-sure convergence fails, though Csörgő and Simons (1996) showed that almost-sure convergence holds for trimmed sums and also for sums trimmed by an arbitrary fixed number of maxima. In view of the discreteness of the distribution we focus on `max-trimmed sums', that is, on the sums trimmed by the random number of observations that are equal to the largest one, and prove limit theorems for simply trimmed sums, for max-trimmed sums, as well as for the `total maximum'. Analogues with respect to the random number of summands equal to the minimum are also obtained and, finally, for joint trimming.

The contribution of the theory of scan statistics to the study of many real-life applications has been rapidly expanding during the last decades. The multiple scan statistic, defined on a sequence of n Bernoulli trials, enumerates the number of occurrences of k consecutive trials which contain at least r successes among them (r≤k≤n). In this paper we establish some asymptotic results for the distribution of the multiple scan statistic, as n,k,r→∞ and illustrate their accuracy through a simulation study. Our approach is based on an appropriate combination of compound Poisson approximation and random walk theory.

In their recent paper Velleman and Warrington (2013) analyzed the expected values of some of the parameters in a memory game; namely, the length of the game, the waiting time for the first match, and the number of lucky moves. In this paper we continue this direction of investigation and obtain the limiting distributions of those parameters. More specifically, we prove that when suitably normalized, these quantities converge in distribution to a normal, Rayleigh, and Poisson random variable, respectively. We also make a connection between the memory game and one of the models of preferential attachment graphs. In particular, as a by-product of our methods, we obtain the joint asymptotic normality of the degree counts in the preferential attachment graphs. Furthermore, we obtain simpler proofs (although without rate of convergence) of some of the results of Peköz et al. (2014) on the joint limiting distributions of the degrees of the first few vertices in preferential attachment graphs. In order to prove that the length of the game is asymptotically normal, our main technical tool is a limit result for the joint distribution of the number of balls in a multitype generalized Pólya urn model.

For random variables with values on binary metric trees, the definition of the expected value can be generalized to the notion of a barycenter. To estimate the barycenter from tree-valued data, the so-called inductive mean is constructed recursively using the weighted interpolation between the current mean and a new data point. We show the strong consistency of the inductive mean, but also that it, somewhat peculiarly, converges towards the true barycenter with different rates, and asymptotic distributions depending on the small variations of the underlying distribution.

We generalize Banach's matchbox problem: demands of random size are made on one of two containers, both initially with content t, where the container is selected at random in the successive steps. Let Zt be the content of the other container at the moment when the selected container is found to be insufficient. We obtain the asymptotic distribution of Zt as t → ∞ under quite general conditions. The case of exponentially distributed demands is considered in more detail.

In 1991 Perkins [7] showed that the normalized critical binary branching process is a time inhomogeneous Fleming-Viot process. In the present paper we extend this result to jump-type branching processes and we show that the normalized jump-type branching processes are in a new class of probability measure-valued processes which will be called ‘jump-type Fleming-Viot processes’. Furthermore we also show that by using these processes it is possible to introduce another new class of measure-valued processes which are obtained by the combination of jump-type branching processes and Fleming-Viot processes.

We obtain bounds for the distribution of the number of comparisons needed by Hoare's randomized selection algorithm FIND and give a new proof for Grübel and Rösler's (1996) result on the convergence of this distribution. Our approach is based on the construction and analysis of a suitable associated Markov chain. Some numerical results for the quantiles of the limit distributions are included, leading for example to the statement that, for a set S with n elements and n large, FIND will need with probability 0.9 about 4.72 x n comparisons to find the median of S.

Dynamic asset allocation strategies that are continuously rebalanced so as to always keep a fixed constant proportion of wealth invested in the various assets at each point in time play a fundamental role in the theory of optimal portfolio strategies. In this paper we study the rate of return on investment, defined here as the net gain in wealth divided by the cumulative investment, for such investment strategies in continuous time. Among other results, we prove that the limiting distribution of this measure of return is a gamma distribution. This limit theorem allows for comparisons of different strategies. For example, the mean return on investment is maximized by the same strategy that maximizes logarithmic utility, which is also known to maximize the exponential rate at which wealth grows. The return from this policy turns out to have other stochastic dominance properties as well. We also study the return on the risky investment alone, defined here as the present value of the gain from investment divided by the present value of the cumulative investment in the risky asset needed to achieve the gain. We show that for the log-optimal, or optimal growth policy, this return tends to an exponential distribution. We compare the return from the optimal growth policy with the return from a policy that invests a constant amount in the risky stock. We show that for the case of a single risky investment, the constant investor's expected return is twice that of the optimal growth policy. This difference can be considered the cost for insuring that the proportional investor does not go bankrupt.

An exponential approximation for the stationary waiting time distribution and the stationary queue size distribution for single-server queues in heavy traffic is given for a wide class of queues. This class contains for example not only queues for which the generic sequence, i.e. the sequence of service times and interarrival times, is stationary but also such queues for which the generic sequence is asymptotically stationary in some sense. The conditions ensuring the exponential approximation of the characteristics considered in heavy traffic are expressed in terms of the invariance principle for the stationary representation of the generic sequence and its first two moments.

Consider a Poisson point process of density 1 in Rd, centered so that the origin is one of the points. Using lv distances, 1≦p≦∞, define Nd as the number of other points which have the origin as their nearest neighbor and Vol Vd as the volume of the Voronoi region of the origin. We prove that Nd → Poisson (λ = 1) and Vol Vd → 1 in distribution as d →∞, thus extending previous results from the case p = 2. More generally, for a variety of exchangeable distributions for n + 1 points, e0, · ··, en, in Rd and a variety of distances, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of Ndn, the number of points which have e0 as their nearest neighbor, as n, d → ∞ in one or both of the possible iterated orders. The distributions treated include points distributed on the unit l2 sphere and the distances treated include non-lp distances related to correlation coefficients.

Suppose you repeatedly play a game of chance in which you have the advantage. Your return on investment is your net gain divided by the total amount that you have bet. It is shown that the ratio of your return on investment under optimal proportional betting to your return on investment under constant betting converges to an exponential distribution with mean as your advantage tends to 0. The case of non-optimal proportional betting is also treated.

A population of susceptible individuals partitioned into m groups and exposed to a contagious disease is considered.

The progress of this simple epidemic is modeled by an m -dimensional stochastic process, whose components are the number of infective individuals in the respective groups at time t. Exact and approximate formulas for the joint and marginal state probabilities are obtained.

A group of n susceptible individuals exposed to a contagious disease is considered. It is assumed that at each instant in time one or more susceptible individuals can contract the disease.

The progress of this epidemic is modeled by a stochastic process Xn(t), t in [0,∞) representing the number of infective individuals at time t. It is shown that Xn(t), with the suitable standardization and under a mild condition, converges in distribution as n → ∞to a normal random variable for all t in (0, t0), where t0 is an identifiable number.

Zipf's laws are probability distributions on the positive integers which decay algebraically. Such laws have been shown empirically to describe a large class of phenomena, including frequency of words usage, populations of cities, distributions of personal incomes, and distributions of biological genera and species, to mention only a few. In this paper we present a Dirichlet–multinomial urn model for describing the above phenomena from a stochastic point of view.

We derive the Zipf's law under certain regularity conditions; some limit theorems are also obtained for the urn model under consideration.

Cohen has generalized the classical strong ergodic theorem of demography to a stochastic setting. In this setting population projection matrices are chosen according to some homogeneous Markov chain. If this Markov chain converges to the same long-run distribution regardless of its starting point, then one can define an induced Markov chain on the product space of projection matrices and age structure vectors that also has a long-run distribution independent of its starting point. The present paper gives more natural conditions under which Cohen's result holds.

It is shown for a supercritical branching process with immigration that if the log moment of the immigration distribution is infinite, then no sequence of positive constants {cn} exists such that {Xn/cn} converges in law to a proper limit distribution function F, except for the case F(0 +) = 1. Seneta's result [1] combined with the above-mentioned one imply that if 1 < m < ∞ then the finiteness of the log moment of the immigration distribution is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of some constants {cn} such that {Xn/cn} converges in law to a proper limit distribution function F, with F(0 +) < 1.

It is shown that if ϕ is a given function out of a large class satisfying a certain regularity condition, then a supercritical age-dependent branching process {Z(t)} exists with deterministic immigration and given life-length and family-size distributions such that Z(t)/(eat ϕ(t)) converges in probability to a non-zero constant, a being the appropriate Malthusian parameter.

As an easy corollary one discovers the asymptotic behaviour of some processes with random immigration.

I show that the sum of independent random variables converges in distribution when suitably normalised, so long as the Xk satisfy the following two conditions: μ(n)= E |Xn| is comparable with E |Sn| for large n, and Xk/μ(k) converges in distribution. Also I consider the associated birth process X(t) = max{n: Sn ≦ t} when each Xk is positive, and I show that there exists a continuous increasing function v(t) such that for some variable Y with specified distribution, and for almost all u. The function v, satisfies v (t) = A (1 + o (t)) log t. The Markovian birth process with parameters λn = λn, where 0 < λ < 1, is an example of such a process.
