Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted intensive research interest as the next-generation supercapacitor electrodes due to their unique two-dimensional (2D) hydrotalcite-like structure. However, the inevitable agglomeration significantly decreases the accessible surface areas and blocks the pseudocapacitive sites, thus severely hinders their electrochemical applications. Herein, we develop a facile one-step growth approach to fabricate porous agglomerate of NiCo-LDH nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoflakes. By adjusting feeding molar ratios, the obtained NiCo-LDH/rGO electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 879.5 C/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g and still remains 485 C/g at 20 A/g. Furthermore, the fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) has demonstrated a superior energy density of 48.7 W h/kg at a power density of 401 W/kg. After 2000 cycles, the assembled ASC exhibits an improved capacity retention of 81% within a potential window of 1.6 V at 2 A/g.

Single crystal gold clusters (10 nm in size) have been collectively manipulated on mono- and bi-layered MoS2 islands (up to 20 µm) grown on SiO2 using AFM. On the monolayer the clusters tend to move in a direction corresponding to the zigzag alignment of the Mo and S atoms, and assemble into long striation patterns parallel to the scan direction. The distance between consecutive stripes is inversely proportional to the cluster concentration and size. A more detailed observation based on SEM shows that within each stripe the clusters remain separated by gaps of few nm in width possibly caused by electrostatic repulsion and/or the roughness of the SiO2 substrate (~2 nm). The stripes also proved to be thermally stable, preserving their superstructures up to 823 K. On the bilayer gold clusters are much less prone to move and assemble into stripes. These results suggest that the formation of nanostructures resulting from collective manipulation of metal clusters can be oriented by a properly chosen scan path in a rather straightforward way (as compared to one-by-one displacement of single clusters). The goal of forming µm-long but nm-thin wires with a geometrically defined shape could be easily reached with the use of smoother substrates or TMD materials with lesser charge transfer to metals adsorbed on them.

Developing low-cost and high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is essential for the development of hydrogen energy. While transition metal sulfides are reported as promising HER electrocatalysts, their performance still requires further improvement for practical application. In this work, we report a strategy to construct NiSx@MoS2 heterostructures with a well-defined interface structure by growing NiSx nanoclusters on MoS2 nanosheets through atomic layer deposition (ALD). NiSx@MoS2 heterostructures exhibit strongly enhanced HER activity with lower overpotential and faster reaction dynamic compared to MoS2 and NiSx single phases. The enhanced performance is attributed to improved adsorption of the reaction intermediates and the facilitated charge transfer process near the MoS2/NiSx interfaces. Besides high activity, NiSx@MoS2 heterostructures also exhibit high stability in alkaline media. The methodology and knowledge in this work can guide the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts through hetero-interface engineering.

The superconductivity has a long history. One of the most recent discoveries is the superconductivity in the Fe- based family with anti- ferromagnetic state at ambient temperature. In this type of material, the transition to the superconductivity state was found in presence of different dopants. In this report we present the results of calculations of the cluster representing Ba4Fe5As8 in presence of Rh and Pd as dopants. The methodology of Embedded Cluster Method at the MP2 electron correlation level was employed. The population analysis showed two main features: the independence of charge density transfer from the spin density transfer and, the presence of orbitals with electron density but without spin density. The observed properties correspond to the RVB mechanism for the superconductivity transition proposed by Anderson for cuprates. This confirms our conclusions obtained in the same material doped by Co and Ni.

Deposition of size-selected copper and silver nanoparticles (NPs) on polymers using cluster beam technique is studied. It is shown that ratio of particle embedment in the film can be controlled by simple thermal annealing. Combining electron beam lithography, cluster beam deposition, and heat treatment allows to form specific patterns (arrays) of metal NPs on polymer films. Plasticity and flexibility of polymer host and specific properties added by coinage metal NPs open a way for different applications of such composite materials, in particular, for the formation of plasmonic structures with required configurations which can be applied for wave-guiding, resonators, in sensor technologies, and surface enhanced Raman scattering.

This is a cross institution project involving four Institutes of Technology in Ireland. The objective of this project is to assess the use of technology to enhance the assessment of laboratory sessions in Science and Health. In science, health and engineering, the laboratory sessions are at the core of the learning process for skill development. These laboratory sessions focus on the skills acquisition. The Irish Institute of Technology sector, in particular, develops these skills and considers them essential for ‘professionally ready’ graduates. In terms of student progression and retention, the assessment structure has been identified as having a significant impact on student engagement.

The Technology Enhanced Assessment Methods (TEAM) project led by Dundalk Institute of Technology and partnering with Institute of Technology Sligo, Athlone Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Carlow is exploring the potential offered by digital technologies to address these concerns. It aims to develop a framework for applying the principles of effective assessment and feedback to practical assessment. The TEAM project also aims to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders about what it is we want student to learn in laboratory sessions and how our assessment can facilitate this. A peer network of discipline-specific academics and students in the Science and Health field has been established across all four Institutes. As the network focuses on authentic skills assessment in all core modules, including physics and chemistry, the best practice from this project will inform future assessment procedures across laboratory sessions and may be considered for application within a Science and Materials Engineering context.

Assessing the skills acquired in this environment takes many forms. Using student and stakeholder feedback along with an extensive literature review of the area, the team identified key technologies that cut across science and health disciplines, with the potential to influence and enable the learning process. The emphasis was on developing a powerful learning environment approach to enable students to deepen their learning through engagement with the process. The areas identified are: (i) Pre-practical preparation (videos and quizzes), (ii) Electronic laboratory notebooks and ePortfolios, (iii) Digital Feedback technologies and (iv) Rubrics).

This paper describes the student experience and perceptions of the adoption of digital technology in science practical assessments. It also describes the process involved in setting up the pilot structure and it presents the initial results from the student survey.

Boron cluster chemistry roared to life in the 20th century with seminal discoveries outlining the incredibly versatile chemistry of boron, producing a range of neutral and ionic boron compounds that paved the way for a robust suite of hybrid materials that incorporate these electronically delocalized inorganic clusters with the additional organic flexibility. Looking toward further materials research in the 21st century, these stable, inorganic polyhedral borane clusters discovered during previous century will provide a particularly fertile ground for exploration. These stable clusters have already seen significant exploration, but their utility has been obscured by classical synthetic routes using highly toxic neutral borane compounds. This incongruity is quite ironic given the current variety of medical explorations conducted with the essentially nontoxic dodecahedral borane dianion. This article will lay out some essential context and outline key synthetic studies that may dramatically simplify access to these unique compounds to a broader community of materials scientists and engineers.

Nucleation is the first step in the formation of many materials; understanding its microscopic dynamics is crucial for improving synthesis of existing materials and predicting under what conditions novel materials will form. The simple picture of nucleation that prevailed for more than a century does not account for complex nucleation pathways observed in recent years in experiments and simulations. A more general framework is needed to explain reported phenomena; such a framework must account for the peaks and valleys in the free-energy landscape across which nucleation takes place and for the microscopic dynamic factors that dictate how a system explores this landscape. The articles of this issue illustrate and describe the many complex nucleation pathways seen across a range of material systems.

This work aims to synthesize PtPd catalytic clusters and to study the effect of the particle size, the curvature and possible alloying on the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction, electrochemical stability, the mass-transfer of redox active species toward catalytic sites and the electro-kinetic of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. The curvature and the chemical composition of the catalyst surface significantly influence the electrochemically active surface area and catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction, regardless the particle size. The best catalytic activity was accomplished for 45 nm clusters due to possible alloying that enhance the O2 adsorption and dissociation. The complementary impedance studies demonstrated that 45 nm cluster has also the shortest effective diffusion length and the highest reaction rate constant among all morphologies, indicating on superior reactant transport to the catalytic sites. In addition, the 45 nm clusters showed improved electrochemical stability that is believed to be the combined effect of alloying and the compactness of the structure.

Plate-shaped Gd2O3 nanoclusters (GNCs) with well-controlled loading were fabricated by using amphiphilic poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) (PMAO) grafted with PEG as nanogel. The hydrodynamic size of the obtained GNCs was well controlled to <260 nm under appropriate emulsion process conditions and they showed excellent long-term dispersibility in phosphate buffer saline. MRI measurements clearly indicated the substantial improvement in T1 effect of the nanoclusters as compared with the individual Gd2O3 nanoplates. The obtained GNCs possessed a high r1 value of 7.948 s−1mM−1 [Gd], which is 2.23 times higher than that of the commercial product Gd-DOTA, and low r2/r1 of 1.04. In vitro test of the obtained GNCs was demonstrated in NIH/3T3 cell lines, and clear T1-weighted images were obtained. Thus, the PMAO-g-PEG assisted GNCs were potentially useful for T1-weighted MRI contrast agents.

Atomistic lattice-gas models for thermodynamically and kinetically directed assembly are applied to Ru nanocluster formation on a monolayer of graphene supported on Ru(0001) at 309 K. Nanocluster density, mean size, height distribution, and spatial ordering are analyzed by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Both models can reproduce the experimental data, but additional density functional theory analysis favors the former.

Hydrothermal nanoparticle synthesis uses high temperature and pressure water to control the chemical processes that lead to specific compositions and structures. Analyses of the chemistry associated with this process have been mainly restricted to bulk thermodynamics in the form of quantities such as solubilities and empirical models based on experimental observations. In this paper we demonstrate for NiO and NiFe2O4 particles how effective reference chemical potentials derived from first principles calculations can be used to predict cluster shapes, nucleation barriers and surface reactivity. Implications for controlling the nanoparticle size and shape by adjusting pH and temperature will be discussed, as well as implications of these results in forming nanostructured materials by cluster condensation.

The synthesis of hierarchically assembled Al-doped ZnO layers by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) at room temperature was investigated. PLD was performed in a background pressure of 100 Pa O2 to deposit clusters in a low energy regime and obtain nano- and mesostructures resulting from a hierarchical assembly of nanoclusters. We here analyzed the effects of varying the gas flow rate on mesoscale morphology, mass density and optical properties. The variation of the target-to-substrate distance was also investigated, identifying its effects on mass density and film morphology. The optimization of optical properties in terms of transparency and light scattering capability is of potential interest for photovoltaic applications.

In this paper, a microporous-containing graphene oxide/polystyrene (M-GO/PS) was designed and prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of PS from GO surface and then crossrlinking by carbon tetrachloride. The structures of the molecular brush of PS and the related crosslinking M-GO/PS were determined by FTIR, TG, SEM and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. The experimental results showed that PS molecular brush were successfully grown on to the surface of GO. After crosslinking, the PS component was crosslinked into many round nanoparticles with a diameter of 20-30 nm, and therefore the specific surface area of GO/PS obviously increased. This kind of porous M-GO/PS composite was promising for the application in adsorption-desorption energy storage areas.

Ensuring the continued availability of materials for manufactured products requires comprehensive systems to recapture resources from end-of-life and wastewater products. To design such systems, it is critical to account for the complexities of extracting desired materials from multicomponent products and waste streams. Toward that end, we have constructed dynamic simulation–optimization models that accurately describe the recovery of materials and energy from products, residues, and wastewater sludges. These models incorporate fundamental principles such as the second law of thermodynamics, as well as detailed, empirically based descriptions of the mechanical separation of materials at the particulate level. They also account for the evolution of the recycling system over time. Including these real-world details and constraints enables realistic comparisons of recycling rates for different products and technological options and accurate assessments of options for improvement. We have applied this methodology to the recycling of complex, multimaterial products, specifically cars and electronic wastes, as well as wastewater and surface-water systems. This analysis clarifies how product design, recycling technology, and process metallurgy affect recycling rates and water quality. By linking these principles to technology-based design-for-recycling systems, we aim to provide a rigorous basis to reveal the opportunities and limits of recycling to ensure the supply of critical elements. These tools will also provide information to help policymakers reach appropriate decisions on how to design and run these systems and allow the general public to make informed choices when selecting products and services.

We report on a multiplexed, ratiometric method that can confidently distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous epithelial prostate cells in vitro, as demonstrated by a double blind experiment. The technique is based on bright SERRS biotags (SBTs) infused with unique Raman reporter molecules, and carrying cell-specific peptides. Two sets of SERRS biotags were used. One targets the neuropilin-1 (NRP) receptors of cancer cells through the RPARPAR peptide. The other functions as a positive control (PC) and binds to both non-cancerous and cancer cells through the HIV derived TAT peptide. Averaging the SERRS signal over a given cell yielded an NRP/PC ratio from which a robust quantitative measure of the overexpression of the NRP-1 by the cancer cell line was extracted. The use of a local, on-cell reference produces quantitative, statistically robust measures of overexpression independent of such sources of uncertainty such as variations in the location of the focal plane, the local cell concentration and turbidity.

The intercluster interactions of iron/iron oxide core shell nanoclusters have been investigated, and their dependence on cluster size (d) has been discussed. A cluster deposition system is used to prepare core-shell nanoclusters with different d, varying from 9 to 14 nm.Transmission Electron Microscopy has been used for physical characterization, and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer for magnetic study. The cluster – cluster interactions have been investigated by field dependent isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) and dc demagnetization (DCD) measurements at room temperature. Henkel plot shows more negative deviation from non- interacting case for bigger size nanoclusters than smaller size clusters.

Organic materials or polymers, which are widely used in electronic devices, are easily damaged by energetic ion or electron bombardment. Therefore, it is difficult to use conventional ion or electron beam processes for etching organic materials. In this study, a gas cluster beam possessing kinetic energy of the order of several hundred eV was used as a novel means to realize high-rate, low-damage etching. Polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were used as the target organic materials. Using a SF6 cluster beam, the etching depth suddenly increased when the nozzle gas pressure exceeded 0.6 MPa, as in the case of cluster beam formation. When the SF6 gas pressure in the nozzle was 1.2 MPa, the etching rates of PVC and PE were 2.88 μm/s and 1.62 μm/s, respectively. The dependence of the etching effect on cluster size was studied by varying the gas temperature. The etching depth of PVC increased with increasing average cluster size and intensity of the beam. The flow rate of the gas was constant; hence, etching of the organic materials did not occur because of the individual impact of the molecular beam. In fact, it occurred because of the neutral cluster, which had a large total kinetic energy. The energy per molecule of the gas cluster beam is of the order of several tens of meV; hence, high-rate, low-damage etching of organic materials can be potentially achieved.

We synthesized amorphous semiconductor films composed of Mo-encapsulating Si clusters (MoSin : n∼10) on solid substrates. The MoSi10 films had Si networks similar to hydrogenated amorphous Si and an optical gap of 1.5 eV. Electron spin resonance signals were not observed in the films indicating that dangling bonds of Si were terminated by Mo atoms. We fabricated thin-film-transistors using the MoSi10 film as a channel material. The electric field effect of the film was clearly observed. This suggests that the density of mid-gap states in the film is low enough for the field effect to occur.

Electrical conduction in Fe, Pd, Nb, W and Mo cluster-assembled films was investigated in-situ, during their growth by supersonic cluster beam deposition. We observed for clusterassembled films resistivity values several orders of magnitude larger than corresponding bulk, as well as an increase of resistivity by increasing the film thickness, in contrast to the behaviour of atom-assembled metallic films. This suggests that nanoscale morphology arising by growth dynamics of cluster-assembled films, such as the minimal cluster-cluster interconnection and the evolution of surface roughness with thickness, may play a crucial role in the observed behaviour. Theoretical models based on non-isotropic 3D distributions of clusters into the film would help for a deeper understanding of the behaviour of cluster-assembled films compared to atomassembled ones. Benefits are expected in the technological field of devices performing electrical read-out on active nanostructured layers, as in the case of chemoresistive sensors.
