Let $ H $ be a compact subgroup of a locally compact group $ G $ . We first investigate some (operator) (co)homological properties of the Fourier algebra $A(G/H)$ of the homogeneous space $G/H$ such as (operator) approximate biprojectivity and pseudo-contractibility. In particular, we show that $ A(G/H) $ is operator approximately biprojective if and only if $ G/H $ is discrete. We also show that $A(G/H)^{**}$ is boundedly approximately amenable if and only if G is compact and H is open. Finally, we consider the question of existence of weakly compact multipliers on $A(G/H)$ .

Motivated by the definition of a semigroup compactication of a locally compact group and a large collection of examples, we introduce the notion of an (operator) homogeneous left dual Banach algebra (HLDBA) over a (completely contractive) Banach algebra $A$. We prove a Gelfand-type representation theorem showing that every HLDBA over A has a concrete realization as an (operator) homogeneous left Arens product algebra: the dual of a subspace of $A^{\ast }$ with a compatible (matrix) norm and a type of left Arens product $\Box$. Examples include all left Arens product algebras over $A$, but also, when $A$ is the group algebra of a locally compact group, the dual of its Fourier algebra. Beginning with any (completely) contractive (operator) $A$-module action $Q$ on a space $X$, we introduce the (operator) Fourier space $({\mathcal{F}}_{Q}(A^{\ast }),\Vert \cdot \Vert _{Q})$ and prove that $({\mathcal{F}}_{Q}(A^{\ast })^{\ast },\Box )$ is the unique (operator) HLDBA over $A$ for which there is a weak$^{\ast }$-continuous completely isometric representation as completely bounded operators on $X^{\ast }$ extending the dual module representation. Applying our theory to several examples of (completely contractive) Banach algebras $A$ and module operations, we provide new characterizations of familiar HLDBAs over A and we recover, and often extend, some (completely) isometric representation theorems concerning these HLDBAs.

Let $G$ be a separable locally compact group with type $I$ left regular representation, $\widehat{G}$ its dual, $A(G)$ its Fourier algebra and $f\in A(G)$ with compact support. If $G=\mathbb{R}$ and the Fourier transform of $f$ is compactly supported, then, by a classical Paley–Wiener theorem, $f=0$. There are extensions of this theorem for abelian and some unimodular groups. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ has no (nonempty) open compact subsets, $\hat{f}$, the regularised Fourier cotransform of $f$, is compactly supported and $\text{Im}\,\hat{f}$ is finite dimensional, then $f=0$. In connection with this result, we characterise locally compact abelian groups whose identity components are noncompact.

Let $G$ be a locally compact amenable group and $A(G)$ and $B(G)$ be the Fourier and the Fourier–Stieltjes algebras of $G,$ respectively. For a power bounded element $u$ of $B(G)$, let ${\mathcal{E}}_{u}:=\{g\in G:|u(g)|=1\}$. We prove some convergence theorems for iterates of multipliers in Fourier algebras.

(a) If $\Vert u\Vert _{B(G)}\leq 1$, then $\lim _{n\rightarrow \infty }\Vert u^{n}v\Vert _{A(G)}=\text{dist}(v,I_{{\mathcal{E}}_{u}})\text{ for }v\in A(G)$, where $I_{{\mathcal{E}}_{u}}=\{v\in A(G):v({\mathcal{E}}_{u})=\{0\}\}$.

(b) The sequence $\{u^{n}v\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ converges for every $v\in A(G)$ if and only if ${\mathcal{E}}_{u}$ is clopen and $u({\mathcal{E}}_{u})=\{1\}.$

(c) If the sequence $\{u^{n}v\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ converges weakly in $A(G)$ for some $v\in A(G)$, then it converges strongly.

Let $K$ be an ultraspherical hypergroup associated with a locally compact group $G$ and a spherical projector $\pi$ and let $\text{VN}(K)$ denote the dual of the Fourier algebra $A(K)$ corresponding to $K$. In this note, we show that the set of invariant means on $\text{VN}(K)$ is singleton if and only if $K$ is discrete. Here $K$ need not be second countable. We also study invariant means on the dual of the Fourier algebra ${{A}_{0}}(K)$, the closure of $A(K)$ in the cb-multiplier norm. Finally, we consider generalized translations and generalized invariant means.

In this paper we introduce a new way of deforming convolution algebras and Fourier algebras on locally compact groups. We demonstrate that this new deformation allows us to reveal some information about the underlying groups by examining Banach algebra properties of deformed algebras. More precisely, we focus on representability as an operator algebra of deformed convolution algebras on compact connected Lie groups with connection to the real dimension of the underlying group. Similarly, we investigate complete representability as an operator algebra of deformed Fourier algebras on some finitely generated discrete groups with connection to the growth rate of the group.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. Let ${{A}_{M}}\left( G \right)\,\left( {{A}_{0}}\left( G \right) \right)$ denote the closure of $A\left( G \right)$, the Fourier algebra of $G$ in the space of bounded (completely bounded) multipliers of $A\left( G \right)$. We call a locally compact group $\text{M}$-weakly amenable if ${{A}_{M}}\left( G \right) $ has a bounded approximate identity. We will show that when $G$ is $\text{M}$-weakly amenable, the algebras ${{A}_{M}}\left( G \right) $ and ${{A}_{0}}\left( G \right)$ have properties that are characteristic of the Fourier algebra of an amenable group. Along the way we show that the sets of topologically invariant means associated with these algebras have the same cardinality as those of the Fourier algebra.

For a locally compact group $G$, let $A(G)$ be its Fourier algebra, let ${{M}_{cb}}A(G)$ denote the completely bounded multipliers of $A(G)$, and let ${{A}_{Mcb}}\,(G)$ stand for the closure of $A(G)$ in ${{M}_{cb}}A(G)$. We characterize the norm one idempotents in ${{M}_{cb}}A(G)$: the indicator function of a set $E\,\subset \,G$ is a norm one idempotent in ${{M}_{cb}}A(G)$ if and only if $E$ is a coset of an open subgroup of $G$. As applications, we describe the closed ideals of ${{A}_{Mcb}}\,(G)$ with an approximate identity bounded by 1, and we characterize those $G$ for which ${{A}_{Mcb}}\,(G)$ is 1-amenable in the sense of B. E. Johnson. (We can even slightly relax the norm bounds.)

We show that the multiplier algebra of the Fourier algebra on a locally compact group $G$ can be isometrically represented on a direct sum on non-commutative ${{L}^{p}}$ spaces associated with the right von Neumann algebra of $G$. The resulting image is the idealiser of the image of the Fourier algebra. If these spaces are given their canonical operator space structure, then we get a completely isometric representation of the completely bounded multiplier algebra. We make a careful study of the noncommutative ${{L}^{p}}$ spaces we construct and show that they are completely isometric to those considered recently by Forrest, Lee, and Samei. We improve a result of theirs about module homomorphisms. We suggest a definition of a Figa-Talamanca–Herz algebra built out of these non-commutative ${{L}^{p}}$ spaces, say ${{A}_{p}}(\hat{G})$. It is shown that ${{A}_{2}}(\hat{G})$ is isometric to ${{L}^{1}}(G)$, generalising the abelian situation.

Let ${{A}_{p}}\left( G \right)$ be the Figa-Talamanca, Herz Banach Algebra on $G$; thus ${{A}_{2}}\left( G \right)$ is the Fourier algebra. Strong Ditkin $\left( \text{SD} \right)$ and Extremely Strong Ditkin $\left( \text{ESD} \right)$ sets for the Banach algebras $A_{P}^{r}\left( G \right)$ are investigated for abelian and nonabelian locally compact groups $G$. It is shown that $\text{SD}$ and $\text{ESD}$ sets for ${{A}_{p}}\left( G \right)$ remain $\text{SD}$ and $\text{ESD}$ sets for $A_{P}^{r}\left( G \right)$, with strict inclusion for $\text{ESD}$ sets. The case for the strict inclusion of $\text{SD}$ sets is left open.

A result on the weak sequential completeness of ${{A}_{2}}\left( F \right)$ for $\text{ESD}$ sets $F$ is proved and used to show that Varopoulos, Helson, and Sidon sets are not $\text{ESD}$ sets for ${{A}_{2}}\left( G \right)$, yet they are such for $A_{2}^{r}\left( G \right)$ for discrete groups $G$, for any $1\,\le \,r\,\le \,2$.

A result is given on the equivalence of the sequential and the net definitions of $\text{SD}$ or $\text{ESD}$ sets for $\sigma $-compact groups.

The above results are new even if $G$ is abelian.

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Banach algebra with a bounded right approximate identity and let $\mathcal{B}$ be a closed ideal of $\mathcal{A}$. We study the relationship between the right identities of the double duals ${{\mathcal{B}}^{*}}^{*}$ and ${{\mathcal{A}}^{**}}$ under the Arens product. We show that every right identity of ${{\mathcal{B}}^{*}}^{*}$ can be extended to a right identity of ${{\mathcal{A}}^{**}}$ in some sense. As a consequence, we answer a question of Lau and Ülger, showing that for the Fourier algebra $A\left( G \right)$ of a locally compact group $G$, an element $\phi \in A{{\left( G \right)}^{**}}$ is in $A\left( G \right)$ if and only if $A\left( G \right)\phi \subseteq A\left( G \right)$ and $E\phi =\phi$ for all right identities $E$ of $A{{\left( G \right)}^{**}}$. We also prove some results about the topological centers of ${{\mathcal{B}}^{**}}$ and ${{\mathcal{A}}^{**}}$.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let ${{A}_{\text{cb}}}(G)$ denote the closure of $A(G)$, the Fourier algebra of $G$, in the space of completely bounded multipliers of $A(G)$. If $G$ is a weakly amenable, discrete group such that ${{C}^{*}}(G)$ is residually finite-dimensional, we show that ${{A}_{\text{cb}}}(G)$ is operator amenable. In particular, ${{A}_{\text{cb}}}({{\mathbb{F}}_{2}})$ is operator amenable even though ${{\mathbb{F}}_{2}}$, the free group in two generators, is not an amenable group. Moreover, we show that if $G$ is a discrete group such that ${{A}_{\text{cb}}}(G)$ is operator amenable, a closed ideal of $A(G)$ is weakly completely complemented in $A(G)$ if and only if it has an approximate identity bounded in the $\text{cb}$-multiplier norm.

The decomposability number of a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ (denoted by $\text{dec}\left( \mathcal{M} \right)$) is the greatest cardinality of a family of pairwise orthogonal non-zero projections in $\mathcal{M}$. In this paper, we explore the close connection between $\text{dec}\left( \mathcal{M} \right)$ and the cardinal level of the Mazur property for the predual ${{\mathcal{M}}_{*}}$ of $\mathcal{M}$, the study of which was initiated by the second author. Here, our main focus is on those von Neumann algebras whose preduals constitute such important Banach algebras on a locally compact group $G$ as the group algebra ${{L}_{1}}(G)$, the Fourier algebra $A(G)$, the measure algebra $M(G)$, the algebra $LUC{{(G)}^{*}}$, etc. We show that for any of these von Neumann algebras, say $\mathcal{M}$, the cardinal number dec$(\mathcal{M})$ and a certain cardinal level of the Mazur property of ${{\mathcal{M}}_{*}}$ are completely encoded in the underlying group structure. In fact, they can be expressed precisely by two dual cardinal invariants of $G$: the compact covering number $\kappa (G)$ of $G$ and the least cardinality $\mathcal{X}(G)$ of an open basis at the identity of $G$. We also present an application of the Mazur property of higher level to the topological centre problem for the Banach algebra $A{{(G)}^{**}}$.

We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the Fourier algebra$A(G)$ for a locally compact groupoid $G$. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group, $\mathrm{L}^p (G)$ be the usual $\mathrm{L}^p$-space for $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, and $\mathrm{A} (G)$ be the Fourier algebra of $G$. Our goal is to study, in a new abstract context, the completely bounded multipliers of $\mathrm{A} (G)$, which we denote $\mathrm{M_{cb}A} (G)$. We show that $\mathrm{M_{cb}A} (G)$ can be characterised as the ‘invariant part’ of the space of (completely) bounded normal $\mathrm{L}^\infty (G)$-bimodule maps on $\mathcal{B}(\mathrm{L}^2 (G))$, the space of bounded operators on $\mathrm{L}^2 (G)$. In doing this we develop a function-theoretic description of the normal $\mathrm{L}^\infty (X, \mu)$-bimodule maps on $\mathcal{B} (\mathrm{L}^2 (X, \mu))$, which we denote by $\mathrm{V}^\infty (X, \mu)$, and name the {\it measurable Schur multipliers} of $(X, \mu)$. Our approach leads to many new results, some of which generalise results hitherto known only for certain classes of groups. Those results which we develop here are a uniform approach to obtaining the functorial properties of $\mathrm{M_{cb} A} (G)$, and a concrete description of a standard predual of $\mathrm{M_{cb} A} (G)$.

In this paper, we investigate projectivity in the category of operator spaces. In particular, we show that the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group $G$ is operator biprojective if and only if $G$ is discrete.

Closed ideals in A(G) with bounded approximate identities are characterized for amenable [SIN]-groups and arbitrary discrete groups. This extends a result of Liu, van Rooij and Wang for abelian groups.

Let G be a locally compact group G (which may be non-abelian) and Ap(G) the p-Fourier algebra of Herz (1971). This paper is concerned with the Fourier algebra Al, p(G) = Ap(G) ∩ L1(G) and various relations that exist between Al, p(G), Ap(G) and G.
