Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\text{Irr}(G)$ be the set of all irreducible complex characters of $G$. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}(G)$ be the set of all prime divisors of character degrees of $G$. The character degree graph $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}(G)$ associated to $G$ is a graph whose vertex set is $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}(G)$, and there is an edge between two distinct primes $p$ and $q$ if and only if $pq$ divides $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(1)$ for some $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}\in \text{Irr}(G)$. We prove that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}(G)$ is $k$-regular for some natural number $k$ if and only if $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}}(G)$ is a regular bipartite graph.

We consider the relationship between structural information of a finite group $G$ and $\text{cd}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}(G)$, the set of all irreducible projective character degrees of $G$ with factor set $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$. We show that for nontrivial $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$, if all numbers in $\text{cd}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}(G)$ are prime powers, then $G$ is solvable. Our result is proved by classical character theory using the bijection between irreducible projective representations and irreducible constituents of induced representations in its representation group.

Let G be a finite group, and write cd (G) for the set of degrees of irreducible characters of G. The common-divisor graph Γ(G) associated with G is the graph whose vertex set is cd (G)∖{1} and there is an edge between distinct vertices a and b, if (a, b) > 1. In this paper we prove that if Γ(G) is a k-regular graph for some k ⩾ 0, then for the solvable groups, either Γ(G) is a complete graph of order k + 1 or Γ(G) has two connected components which are complete of the same order and for the non-solvable groups, either k = 0 and cd(G) = cd(PSL2(2f)), where f ⩾ 2 or Γ(G) is a 4-regular graph with six vertices and cd(G) = cd(Alt7) or cd(Sym7).

When $G$ is a finite solvable group, we prove that $|G|$ can be bounded by a function in the number of irreducible characters with values in fields where $\mathbb{Q}$ is extended by prime power roots of unity. This gives a character theory analog for solvable groups of a theorem of Héthelyi and Külshammer that bounds the order of a finite group in terms of the number of conjugacy classes of elements of prime power order. In particular, we obtain for solvable groups a generalization of Landau’s theorem.

Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathsf{cd}(G)$ denote the set of complex irreducible character degrees of $G$. We prove that if $G$ is a finite group and $H$ is an almost simple group whose socle is a sporadic simple group $H_{0}$ and such that $\mathsf{cd}(G)=\mathsf{cd}(H)$, then $G^{\prime }\cong H_{0}$ and there exists an abelian subgroup $A$ of $G$ such that $G/A$ is isomorphic to $H$. In view of Huppert’s conjecture, we also provide some examples to show that $G$ is not necessarily a direct product of $A$ and $H$, so that we cannot extend the conjecture to almost simple groups.

Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this note, we show that a finite group $G$ is solvable if all degrees of irreducible complex characters of $G$ not divisible by $p$ are either 1 or a prime.

We show that two metacyclic groups of the following types are isomorphic if they have the same character tables: (i) split metacyclic groups, (ii) the metacyclic p-groups and (iii) the metacyclic {p, q}-groups, where p, q are odd primes.

When a minimal Heilbronn character θ is unfaithful on a Sylow p-subgroup P of a finite group G, we know that G is quasi-simple, p is odd, P is cyclic, NG(P) is maximal and either NG(P) is the unique maximal subgroup containing Ω1(P) or G/Z(G) ≅ L2(q) for q an odd prime with p dividing q − 1. In this paper we examine the exceptional case, where G/Z(G) ≅ L2(q), explicitly constructing unfaithful minimal Heilbronn characters from the non-principal irreducible characters of G.

Let G be a finite group. If G has a cyclic Sylow 2-subgroup, then G has the same number of irreducible rational-valued characters as of rational conjugacy classes. These numbers need not be the same even if G has Klein Sylow 2-subgroups and a normal 2-complement.

Let G be a finite Steinberg–Tits triality group 3D4(q), and let H be a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. In this paper we classify irreducible characters χ of G such that χH has a linear constituent with multiplicity one.

Suppose that the finite group G acts faithfully and irreducibly on the finite G-module V of characteristic p not dividing |G|. The well-known k(GV)-problem states that in this situation, if k(G V) is the number of conjugacy classes of the semidirect product GV, then k(GV) ≤ |V|. For p—solvable groups, this is equivalent to Brauer's famous k(B)-problem. In 1996, Robinson and Thompson proved the k(GV) problem for large p. This ultimately led to a complete proof of the k(GV)-problem. In this paper, we present a new proof of the k(G V)-problem for large p.

This paper is concerned with the well-known and long-standing k(G V)-problem: If the finite group G acts faithfully and irreducibly on the finite GF(p)-module V and p does not divide the order of G, is the number k(GV) of conjugacy classes of the semidirect product GV bounded above by the order of V? Over the past two decades, through the work of numerous people, by using deep character theoretic arguments this question has been answered in the affirmative except for ρ = 5 for which it is still open. In this paper we suggest a new approach to the k(G V)-problem which is independent of most of the previous work on the problem and which is mainly group theoretical. To demonstrate the potential of the new line of attack we use it to solve the k(G V)-problem for solvable G and large ρ.

Let V be an infinite-dimensional vector space ovre a field of characteristic 0. It is well known that the tensor algebra T on V is a completely reducible module for the general linear group G on V. This paper is concerned with those quotient algebras A of T that are at the same time modules for G. A partial solution is given to the problem of determinig those A in which no irreducible constitutent has multiplicity greater thatn 1.

Suppose that G is a π-separable group. Let N be a normal π1-subgroup of G and let H be a Hall π-subgroup of G. In this paper, we prove that there is a canonical basis of the complex space of the class functions of G which vanish of G-conjugates ofHN. When N = 1 and π is the complement of a prime p, these bases are the projective indecomposable characters and set of irreduciblt Brauer charcters of G.
