Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was utilized to determine the origins of berthierine and chlorite in the core of the footwall alteration zone of the Kidd Creek massive sulfide deposit, Ontario. TEM images show lamellar intergrowths of packets of berthierine, mixed-layer chlorite/berthierine, Fe-Mg chlorite, and relatively Fe-rich chlorite that contain dislocations, stacking faults, kink bands, and gliding along (001). Interstratification of packets of berthierine and chlorite with one to several tens of layers commonly is associated with terminations of a layer of chlorite by two layers of berthierine. Layers in adjacent domains of berthierine and chlorite are continuous across interfaces that transect their common {001} planes. High-strain zones that cut across cleavage planes, consisting of distorted layers and lens-shaped pores, are associated with stacking faults and gliding along cleavage planes in chlorite crystals. Similar features separate interstratified chlorite/berthierine of different structures and textures, implying development of such composite grains after deformation of chlorite. Electron diffraction patterns show that the chlorite is an ordered one- or two-layer polytype or a one-layer polytype with semi-random stacking, and that the berthierine is a one-layer polytype with semi-random stacking epitaxially intergrown with chlorite.

Coexisting chlorite and berthierine have nearly identical ranges of compositions, containing Si ≅ 5, Al ≅ 6, and Fe ≅ 6.5–8.5 pfu, and minor, variable Mg and Mn contents, in formulae normalized on the basis of 20 total cations. This implies polymorphism among Fe,Al-rich members of the serpentine and chlorite groups. In one of the samples, berthierine and mixed-layer chlorite/berthierine coexist with chlorite having two compositional ranges, including Fe-rich chlorite with a relatively wide range of Fe-Mg contents, and a dominant Fe-Mg chlorite. In another sample, compositionally homogeneous Fe-rich chlorite is associated with berthierine and mixed-layer chlorite/berthierine; Fe-Mg chlorite was not detected.

The microstructural relations and the presence of coexisting polymorphs, complex mixed layering, heterogeneous polytypism, and wide ranges of mineral compositions are consistent with replacement of chlorite by berthierine under non-equilibrium retrograde conditions, in contrast to the generally assumed prograde origin for other berthierine occurrences.

This study describes a new variety of chalcedony with a unique inhomogeneous bluish green hue, named aquaprase. It was discovered in Africa and is considered to be a valuable addition to the gem trade. A multi-methodological approach was used to examine its chemistry, mineralogy and microstructure, which were then compared to those of chrysoprase and agate, two of the most popular varieties of chalcedony. Optical microscopy revealed a complex microstructural heterogeneity in the different colour intensity areas/bands of aquaprase and agate, whereas chrysoprase exhibited a more homogeneous coexistence of micro- and cryptocrystalline quartz. High-resolution synchrotron XRD was essential for highlighting the complex assemblage of various types of α-quartz in aquaprase and agate (which differ in terms of crystal size and/or cell parameters). Micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed α-quartz and moganite in all three varieties of chalcedony and the presence of the nickel-bearing layered silicate mineral, willemseite, in chrysoprase, which is responsible for its green colouration. The chemical analysis displayed a homogeneous composition of agate, as well as high levels of nickel content in the chrysoprase variety. Aquaprase showed significant amounts (ppm by weight) of trace elements (Al, Mg, Na, K, Ca, Ti, U and Fe) characteristic of its formation environment, as well as high values of Cr, which are thought to be the cause of its bluish green colouration.

Nano-sized TiN-reinforced Ti metal matrix composites were fabricated by powder metallurgical route, which includes high-energy ball milling pretreatment and subsequent hot-press sintering treatment. The phase composition and microstructure of the sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that N2 was absorbed and solubilized into TiH2 by milling pretreatment, and TiN was formed during sintering process and was fine to a grain size of 20–100 nm. The final phase composition of the composites was αTi, βTi, and TiN with solution N in matrix. Mechanical tests showed that with increasing milling time, the hardness of the composites increased by 31, 58, 93, and 101% compared with pure Ti. The compressive strength initially increased and later decreased to 2440 and 2120 MPa when milled for 1.5 and 2 h, respectively.

In the present work, a β-Ti alloy (Ti–15V–3Sn–3Cr–3Al) was unidirectionally cold rolled to 80% thickness reduction, followed by recrystallization at two temperatures: (i) 1013 K and (ii) 1053 K. The microstructural developments were studied using light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy X-ray peak profile analysis, and electron backscattered diffraction. The bulk texture of deformed and fully recrystallized samples was studied using X-ray diffraction. The deformed microstructures showed the presence of high fraction of shear bands, and these bands were preferentially formed in γ-fiber grains than in the grains with other orientations. Cold rolled β-Ti alloy samples were fully recrystallized in 10 min at 1053 K and in 90 min at 1013 K. Strong α- and γ-fibers were formed after 80% cold rolling, while strong discontinuous γ-fiber (with very strong {111}〈112〉 component) was formed after complete recrystallization. Oriented nucleation was found to be the dominant mechanism for the development of recrystallization texture.

In this study, we have examined ceramic matrix composites with silicon carbide fibers in a melt-infiltrated silicon carbide matrix (SiC/SiC). We subjected samples to tensile loads while collecting micro X-ray computed tomography images. The results showed the expected crack slowing mechanisms and lower resistance to crack propagation where the fibers ran parallel and perpendicular to the applied load respectively. Cracking was shown to initiate not only from the surface but also from silicon inclusions. Post heat-treated samples showed longer fiber pull-out than the pristine samples, which was incompatible with previously proposed mechanisms. Evidence for oxidation was identified and new mechanisms based on oxidation or an oxidation assisted boron nitride phase transformation was therefore proposed to explain the long pull-out. The role of oxidation emphasizes the necessity of applying oxidation resistant coatings on SiC/SiC.

From a few examples, the first part of this paper discusses the use of transmission electron microscopy in characterizing arrested silicate reaction mechanisms in coherent rocks, including nucleation, crystal growth, and resorption events. Some attention is given to the role of reaction sites and strain. The second part of the paper addresses the wealth of mutual arrangement of serpentine tubules (chrysotile sl) found recently in serpentinite cracks, the result of hydration reactions. It is suggested that their great flexibility of association as fascinating mesostructures may indicate how veins formed and how they were filled. Micro- to nano-cracks might potentially serve as markers of brittle deformation in the submicron range, and therefore might document nanostructural geology. When possible the topological and self-assembly features observed for chrysotile are compared with those reported for graphene nanotubes.

Amphibolites in the Mesozoic part of the parautochthonous Lower Schieferhülle (LSH), the allochthonous Upper Schieferhülle (USH) and the overlying Austroalpine basement (AA) in and around the western Tauern Window (Eastern Alps) suffered a progressive Alpine deformation. Lineations and foliations L1-S1, L2-S2 defined by preferentially oriented (Na-Ca) amphiboles as well as F3 folds and further foliations Smyl and S4 in the metabasites are structures of successive deformational stages with a constant W-E main extension axis of strain. The (Na-Ca) amphiboles in assemblages with epidote, chlorite, albite/oligoclase and quartz are zoned with similar continuous zonation trends from early actinolite in the cores to magnesio-hornblende and tschermakitic hornblende, and from magnesio-hornblende to late actinolite in the rims in the three lithostratigraphic units. Geothermobarometry involving tremolite-edenite and (pargasite-hastingsite)-tremolite end-member equilibria in amphiboles allowed us to reconstruct prograde-retrograde P-T paths for the Alpine greenschist-amphibolite facies event. The paths passed P/Tmax at 6–7 kbar/600°C. Similar shapes of the paths in AA, USH and Mesozoic LSH indicate a common metamorphic history and a stacking of these units prior to or during the pre-Pmax evolution. Moderate P-T ratios are characteristic for the temperature-dominated compression paths and indicate continental collisional rather than subduction zone metamorphism. The middle to late Alpine greenschist-amphibolite facies event appears as an independent metamorphism along a complete P-T loop which may have followed an earlier and poorly documented high-pressure/low-temperature event.

Recent TEM observations of two-phase microstructures and associated crystal defects in selected, rare dolomites have been extended to calcite-structured (R3̄c) carbonates and to other natural and synthetic carbonates that crystallize with the dolomite (R3̄) structure. The samples included siderites (FeCO3), smithsonites (ZnCO3), ankerites (Ca[Mg,Fe](CO3)2), and kutnahorites (Ca[Mn,Fe](CO3)2).

TEM methods show that the forms of second phases which result from the presence of common, divalent, metallic impurities are morphologically similar in R3̄c and R3̄ carbonates and occur more widely than hitherto realized. The most common form consists of thin ribbons of second phase which are coherent with and have the same crystallographic orientation as the host carbonate. Another form of microstructure, manifest as modulations in diffraction contrast, appears to be associated with incipient breakdown of single-phase carbonate. The results of extensive TEM/EDS microanalyses show that in siderite and ankerite the formation of ribbons is promoted by Ca impurity or Ca excess (with respect to R3̄c stoichiometry). In smithsonite, Cu and Ca impurities can play similar roles in relation to modulated microstructures. In kutnahorites, the perfection of grains and the absence of second-phase effects is strongly dependent on the ratio of Fe to Mn but is also affected by Ca in excess of the stoichiometric requirement. Electron diffraction results from several of the minerals show c-type spots, which can be interpreted as indicating ordering within basal layers of cations.

The results show that, by correlating analytical TEM data with the study of second phases and incipient two-phase microstructures, it should be possible to determine the limits of solid solubility in carbonate systems.

The dacite of El Joyazo contains abundant metapelitic xenoliths. These can be divided into two main types: garnet-biotite-sillimanite and spinel-cordierite xenoliths. In the xenoliths the widespread occurrence of rhyolitic glass as interstitial films, foliation-parallel layers and primary melt inclusions in all mineral phases indicates that these assemblages developed in the presence of a melt phase, i.e. during anatexis. The composition of the interstitial glass is comparable to that of the melt inclusions, suggesting that melt was locally produced. Phase equilibria indicate that anatexis occurred at P-T conditions of 5–7 kbar and 850±50°C.

Several microstructural lines of evidence show that melt extraction was assisted by deformation during foliation development, and that on the scale of the xenoliths (up to 50 cm) melt escaped mainly by flow along foliation planes. The development of a syn-anatectic foliation also suggests that metapelitic rocks were involved in high-grade metamorphism and partial melting prior to fragmentation and dispersion in the host dacite.

Mass balance calculations, based on the chemical composition of interstitial glass and melt inclusions in minerals, the bulk xenoliths and representative samples of potential pelitic sources support a model wherein the xenoliths represent restites after the extraction of 30 to 55 wt.% melt from graphitic metapelite protoliths similar to the rocks constituting the surrounding Alpujarride metamorphic complex.

The wetting of Cu–19Ni–5Al alloy on Ni-coated WC–8Co substrates with different coating thicknesses was investigated, and the brazing of Ni-coated WC–8Co to SAE1045 steel was performed by using the Cu–19Ni–5Al alloy as the filler metal. All the Cu–19Ni–5Al/Ni-coated WC–8Co systems present excellent wettability with a final contact angle of ∼10°. The thicknesses of the β + γ phase enriched with Co, Ni, and Al at the two joint interfaces increase and decrease with the Ni coating thickness, brazing temperature, and holding time increasing, respectively. The joint shear strength increases first and then decreases with the increase of Ni coating thickness, brazing temperature, or holding time. The maximum joint shear strength of ∼328 MPa is obtained while Ni plating for 90 min and brazing at 1210 °C × 5 min.

Effects of Zn content on microstructures and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg–4Y–xZn alloys (x = 1, 2, 3, 4) have been studied in the article. The results indicate that the X phase is formed firstly, and the X phase, X + W phases, and W phase precipitated in order when the Zn contents increased from 1 to 4 wt%. The secondary dendritic arm spacing of the tested alloys first decrease as the Zn content increases within the range of 1–2% and then it increases. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of the four experimental alloys increase until the addition of Zn reaches to 3%, with the maximum values of 213.6 MPa and 11.82%, respectively. Besides, the fracture behaviors of Mg–4Y–1Zn, Mg–4Y–2Zn, and Mg–4Y–3Zn were a quasi-cleavage fracture, while Mg–4Y–4Zn belonged to cleavage.

The object of the present investigations was to evaluate the effect of flash butt welding parameters on microstructures and mechanical properties of HSLA 590CL welded joints in wheel rims by adjusting welding parameters separately. The amount of Widmanstatten ferrites and bainite in the weld metal, and grain size were observed with the adjustment of welding parameters. The tensile strength of welded joints met the strength requirement of wheel rims steels, but the tensile strength and tensile fracture were different in different welding parameters. Micro-hardness distributions of welded joints in different welding parameters were similar, that is the maximum micro-hardness occurred in the weld and micro-hardness decreased from the weld to base metal. A certain degree of softening phenomenon was found in the heat affected zone (HAZ), which should result from the heat input in the flash butt welding. Two failure mechanisms of wheel rims in the expanding process were investigated. The first type fractured at the HAZ and showed ductile fracture characteristics, the crack initiation located at the thinning location. The second type fractured at the weld and showed brittle fracture characteristics.

The flash allowance and upset allowance have significant effects on characteristics of flash butt welded RS590CL steel joints. The overheated zone (OZ) widths increased with flash allowance (δf) increase, and decreased as the upset allowance (δu) increased. The coarsened upper bainite was formed in interface zone (IZ) and OZ as δf increased. With increasing δu, the large plastic deformation occurred and the interface formability improved. The hardness in IZ was a little lower than that in its vicinity OZ due to some ferrite existence and dislocation amount decreased in IZ. The tensile strengths of flash butt welding (FBW) joints were in good match with base metal and the ductilities were lower. The maximum bending crack length was 0.68 mm which indicated that the bending properties of FBW joints were good. Under this experiment, relatively large δf (10–12 mm) and δu (5.5–6.5 mm) were recommended for the benefit of high quality FBW joints.

This article overviews electron-beam melting (EBM), including process optimization issues. Examples of EBM-fabricated components described include hexagonal close-packed Ti-6Al-4V, face-centered-cubic René 142 (a Ni-based superalloy), and body-centered-cubic pure iron, corresponding to a melt temperature range from 1375°C to 1630°C. Residual microstructures observed for these fabricated components by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy include equilibrium as well as nonequilibrium features, which illustrate prospects for novel structure–property manipulation in the EBM process. The EBM process relies on available pre-alloyed, precursor powders that are selectively melted layer by layer by a computer-aided design scanned electron beam to form relatively small, but often complex, products or components. Direct metal deposition innovations capable of truly three-dimensional metal printing are described, especially high-temperature metals and alloys for future additive manufacturing technologies.

Microstructure evolution and tensile properties of large dimensional bulk 304 stainless steel after being rolled with different thickness reductions were characterized in detail. The results showed that the steel consisted of nano-submicro-microcrystalline austenite and nanocrystalline ferrite. Submicrocrystalline austenite was broken down with the thickness reduction, when thickness reduction was 70%, all submicrocrystalline were broken down to nanocrocrystalline, and dispersed more uniformly in the microcrystalline austenite phase in the steel, but the grain size of the nanocrystalline austenite increased to 70 nm. Tensile strength increased from 850 MPa to 965 MPa, yield strength increased from 652 MPa to 837 MPa, elongation decreased from 33% to 19%, intergranular corrosion rate decreased from 1.36 g/(m2 h) to 0.46 g/(m2 h). Strength and intergranular corrosion properties increased much. When the thickness reduction was 70%, the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and intergranular corrosion properties were the best in the reported value of the steel.

Based on the researches on the temperature and microstructures dependent fracture strength and temperature dependent thermal shock resistance, the new thermal shock resistance models for ultra-high-temperature ceramics were proposed. The effect of density on the fracture strength of material was investigated. A damage term was introduced to reveal the effects of uncertain factors on fracture strength. The roles of residual stress and microstructure sizes at different initial thermal shock temperatures in the thermal shock resistance were studied using the models. The study showed that the models can reveal the relationships among the residual stress, microstructure sizes and the temperature dependent thermal shock resistance well. The better thermal shock resistance is found for ultra-high-temperature ceramics having small SiC grains and relatively large micro-cracks around SiC grains. Large enhancement in thermal shock resistance can be achieved through our studies.

The unique set of mechanical properties found in rigid biological tissues, which combine high strength and stiffness with superior toughness, offer inspiration for the design of advanced functional structural materials with outstanding performance. This paper reports on the first utilization of one such biogenic material—siliceous sponge spicules, the skeletal elements of sponges (Poriphera)—as a unique naturally nanostructured template for vacuum deposition, while also reporting on the effects of the required chemical and thermal treatments for template preparation on the material’s microstructure and mechanical properties. The confined space within the central channel of spicules from the sponge Euplectella acts simultaneously as a nanotemplate and as a biogenic, optically transparent, glassy microchamber for the preparation of micrometer-sized clusters of fullerene-C60 through vacuum deposition onto the nanostructured surface. This biological material allows an unprecedented and unique microporous morphology of C60 particles to be obtained.

An improvement in the life time calculation is aspired by the characterisation of thelife time behaviour of a typically lightweight aircraft titanium alloy by describing themicrostructure. Therefore, extensive research on a Ti-6-4 fitting element has been carriedout. In addition to static tensile tests, rotating bending tests and fracture mechanicaltests, component tests with constant and variable load were performed. Simultaneously, themicrostructures of the specimens and tested components are extensively analysed at severalpoints including the lug area, as well as, the specimen’s microstructure taken out of thelower link fitting. A common consideration of life time results as well as results of themicrostructure in the life time calculation shows the possibilities for more precise lifetime estimation.

The focus of this review is on trace-element quantitation of microstructures in solids. This review is aimed at the nonspecialist who wants to know how secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) quantitation is achieved. Despite 35 years of SIMS research and applications, SIMS quantitation remains a fundamentally empirical enterprise and is based on standards. The most used standards are “bulk standards”—solids with a homogeneous distribution of a trace element—and ion-implanted solids. The SIMS systematics of bulk standards and ion-implanted solids are reviewed.
