Phase equilibria in the system Pd–Ag–S were studied using the silica-glass tube method at 400°C and 550°C. In the system we synthesised three ternary phases: coldwellite (Pd3Ag2S), kravtsovite (PdAg2S) and a new phase Pd13Ag3S4. At 400°С, coldwellite forms a stable association with vysotskite (PdS) and vasilite (Pd16S7); vysotskite and kravtsovite; phase Pd4S and a Ag–Pd alloy; it also coexists with a new phase Pd13Ag3S4. Kravtsovite is stable up to 507°C; the presence of kravtsovite in the mineral assemblage reflects its formation below this temperature. The occurrence of coldwellite, vysotskite and Ag2S together in equilibrium reflects the formation of this mineral assemblage above this temperature (507°C). Coldwellite is stable up at 940°С. Mineral assemblages defined in this study can be expected in Cu–Ni–PGE mineral deposits, associated with mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, in particular in mineralisations with known silver–palladium sulfides.

The FTIR spectra of synthetic BaMg(CO3)2 (norsethite) are measured at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, and the influence of formation conditions on the FTIR spectra is investigated. The results are compared with those for natural norsethite from Långban (Sweden) and Rosh Pinah (Namibia). The Raman spectrum of synthetic norsethite is reported, too. A number of first-order internal modes of the carbonate ion group (ν1, ν2, ν3, ν4) are found to be infrared and Raman active. Additonally, the (ν1+ν3) and (ν1+ν4) combination modes and the (2*ν2) overtone are observed in the FTIR and Raman spectrum, respectively. The carbon isotopic-shift coefficient for ν2 due to the substitution of 12C by 13C (ν2(13CO32-)/ν2(12CO32-) = 0.971 ± 0.002), observed by FTIR spectroscopy, agrees with the theoretical value of 0.969.

The phase equilibria in the system Ag–Pd–Te were studied by the technique of using an evacuated silica glass tube at 350° and 450°C. Five ternary phases were synthesized: sopcheite (Pd3Ag4Te4), lukkulaisvaaraite (Pd14Ag2Te9),telargpalite (Pd2–xAg1+xTe) and the previously unknown phases Pd7.5–xAg0.5+ xTe3 and Pd2+xAg2–xTe.The synthetic telargpalite has a compositional range from 26 to 29 wt.% Ag, with the formula Pd2–xAg1+xTe, where x varies from 0.09 to 0.22. The phase Pd2+xAg2–xTe has a compositional range from 34 to 35 wt.% Ag, where x varies from 0.18 to 0.24. The phase Pd7.5–xAg0.5+xTe3 forms a solid solution from 4 to 11 wt.% Ag, where x varies from 0.02 to 0.83. Phases Pd20Te7and Pd13Te3 dissolve up to 3.5 and 2 wt.% Ag, respectively. Other binary palladium tellurides do not dissolve Ag. The phase Pd3Ag4Te4, an analogue of the mineral sopcheite, forms a stable association with hessite and kotulskite it also coexists with lukkulaisvaaraite. Sopcheite is stable up to 383°C. Natural occurrences of hessite, kotulskite and lukkulaisvaaraite together in equilibrium indicate formation above this temperature. Phase relations defined the mineral assemblages that can be expected to occur in nature.The phase Pd7.5–xAg0.5+xTe3 potentially represents a new mineral; it will probably be found in association with lukkulaisvaaraite and telargpalite or telluropalladinite, among other platinum-group minerals. The phasePd2+xAg2–x Te can be found in association with telargpalite. Mineral assemblages defined in this study can be expected in Cu-Ni-PGE mineral deposits, associated with mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, particularly in mineralized zones with known silver-palladium tellurides.

We study the possibility of two types of inhomogeneous phases in core of neutron stars: one is the Coulomb crystal, which is known as quark-hadron pasta structures, and another one is chiral crystal. In the Coulomb crystal, the inhomogeneous phase appears as the result of the balance between the surface tension and the Coulomb interaction. In chiral crystal, we study the inhomogeneous chiral condensate, which has spatial modulation. In the simple model in 1+1 dimensions, this condensate has the same feature with the FFLO state, which is well known in the condensed matter physics.

In this article, we discuss the stability of soft quasicrystalline phases in a coupled-mode Swift-Hohenberg model for three-component systems, where the characteristic length scales are governed by the positive-definite gradient terms. Classic two-mode approximation method and direct numerical minimization are applied to the model. In the latter approach, we apply the projection method to deal with the potentially quasiperiodic ground states. A variable cell method of optimizing the shape and size of higher-dimensional periodic cell is developed to minimize the free energy with respect to the order parameters. Based on the developed numerical methods, we rediscover decagonal and dodecagonal quasicrystalline phases, and find diverse periodic phases and complex modulated phases. Furthermore, phase diagrams are obtained in various phase spaces by comparing the free energies of different candidate structures. It does show not only the important roles of system parameters, but also the effect of optimizing computational domain. In particular, the optimization of computational cell allows us to capture the ground states and phase behavior with higher fidelity. We also make some discussions on our results and show the potential of applying our numerical methods to a larger class of mean-field free energy functionals.

In order to complete the research on the Fe–Se binary system, the phase structures with selenium contents from 50 to 60 at.% have been studied. Fe–Se binary samples used in this study were prepared by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method, and the phase structure of each sample was determined by powder X-ray diffraction. The solid solubility of the Fe3Se4 phase was determined to be from 56.1 to 57.6 at.% Se based on the values of unit-cell parameters. Magnetic properties of the samples were also studied.

The ordered L12-type Al3Ti–(8, 10, 15)% Cr intermetallic compounds, namely, Al67Ti25Cr8, Al66Ti24Cr10, and Al59Ti26Cr15, were prepared by induction melting followed by thermomechanical treatment. Their microstructure, compositional variation, and crystal structure were characterized using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The Al67Ti25Cr8 alloy consisted of the L12-Al3Ti matrix and precipitates of α2-Ti3Al, D022-Al3Ti, and γ-TiAl. The Al66Ti24Cr10 and Al59Ti26Cr15 alloys consisted of the L12-Al3Ti matrix and grains of α-TiAl and β-Cr.

PLZT of the compositions 0≤L≤12, and 0≤T≤10 was studied in order to describe the structure of the phases as a function of composition. This range contains a mixed region with PLZT+La2Zr2O7, an orthorhombic, a rhombohedral (hexagonal) phase, a tetragonal phase, and a mixture of different PLZT phases. Each phase pure composition is described by X-ray diffraction.

LiCu2O2 crystals grown by spontaneous crystallization from the fluxed melt were studied by powder X-ray diffraction. The phase analysis shows that the applied growth conditions are suitable for preparation of a single-phase compound. The as-grown crystals contain only traces of foreign phases (Li2CuO2, CuO, Cu2O) typical for preparation of the LiCu2O2 compound. Attempts to anneal or quench the as-grown crystals led to two-phase samples containing LiCu2O2 and LiCu3O3. X-ray powder diffraction pattern of a LiCu2O2 crystal is reported and compared with literature data. The crystal structure is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, in agreement with literature data. Lattice parameters of the studied sample are a=5.7286(2) Å, b=2.8588(1) Å, and c=12.4143(3) Å. Time evolution of a diffraction pattern illustrates a slow increase of the secondary-phases contribution assumed to be due to interaction of the powdered crystal with humid air. Isothermal sections at 1100 and 1500 °C were determined by X-ray powder diffraction method to reveal stable phases and chemical pathways in the Co–Si–C system. There is no ternary compound present in either isothermal. Cobalt silicides are formed in the Co-rich region at temperatures lower than those in the Si-rich region. CoSi2 reacts with carbon to form CoSi and SiC at 1500 °C, and Co2Si and CoSi are more stable in equilibrium with carbon. The results are also discussed in terms of thermodynamics and binding energy of the reacting substances.

One of the key issues in the development of the modern duplex stainless steels was the introduction of nitrogen as an alloying element. This was made possible by e.g. the AOD process and has meant that the problems with earlier grades regarding weldability could be solved. The prime reason for the lower weldability, namely a coarse-grained heat affected zone with inferior properties was then removed. Further beneficial effects of nitrogen increases in the new generation of duplex grades were pointed out: localized corrosion resistance particularly in chloride containing solutions, enhancement of fatigue properties, improved creep properties particularly when considering heat treatment...The paper will outline the influence of nitrogen additions in duplex grades by means of thermodynamic calculations including phase diagrams, TTT phase precipitation diagrams from metallographic investigations, mechanical and corrosion properties. Metallographic investigations, corrosion resistance properties and mechanical properties will be presented. The specific links between welded joints microstructures and properties with different nitrogen contents will be discussed.

When seeds deteriorate, they lose vigour and become more sensitive to stresses upon germination. Eventually seeds lose the ability to germinate. The factors which determine the rate of this ‘aging’ are the temperature and moisture content at which seeds are stored and an ill-defined parameter, seed quality. While it has been known for many years that manipulation of these factors influences the longevity of seeds, the precise interactions among them are so poorly understood as to preclude the prediction of longevity for a particular seed lot. Concepts from studies of materials and food stability can be applied to seed aging research, and this may help us take a more integrative approach to understanding the kinetics of seed deterioration. These concepts describe the physical environment of the seed matrix in response to changing water contents and temperature. Water activity models describe the state of water in the seed, while the glass models describe the state of the aqueous solution. Both models presume that changes of state affect the nature and kinetics of chemical reactions. Thus, the physical and chemical environment within the seed are inextricably linked.

The development of the electron microprobe by Raymond Castaing provided a great stimulus to materials science at a critical time in its history. For the first time, accurate elemental analysis could be performed with a spatial resolution of 1 µm, well within the dimensions of many microstructural features. The impact of the microprobe occurred across the entire spectrum of materials science and engineering. Contributions to the basic infrastructure of materials science included more accurate and efficient determination of phase diagrams and diffusion coefficients. The study of the microstructure of alloys was greatly enhanced by electron microprobe characterization of major, minor, and trace phases, including contamination. Finally, the electron microprobe has proven to be a critical tool for materials engineering, particularly to study failures, which often begin on a micro-scale and then propagate to the macro-scale with catastrophic results.
