We develop realizability models of intensional type theory, based on groupoids, wherein realizers themselves carry non-trivial (non-discrete) homotopical structure. In the spirit of realizability, this is intended to formalize a homotopical BHK interpretation, whereby evidence for an identification is a path. Specifically, we study partitioned groupoidal assemblies. Categories of such are parameterized by “realizer categories” (instead of the usual partial combinatory algebras) that come equipped with an interval qua internal cogroupoid. The interval furnishes a notion of homotopy as well as a fundamental groupoid construction. Objects in a base groupoid are realized by points in the fundamental groupoid of some object from the realizer category; isomorphisms in the base groupoid are realized by paths in said fundamental groupoid. The main result is that, under mild conditions on the realizer category, the ensuing category of partitioned groupoidal assemblies models intensional (1-truncated) type theory without function extensionality. Moreover, when the underlying realizer category is “untyped,” there exists an impredicative universe of 1-types (the modest fibrations). This is a groupoidal analog of the traditional situation.

In [17], we introduced an extensional variant of generic realizability [22], where realizers act extensionally on realizers, and showed that this form of realizability provides inner models of $\mathsf {CZF}$ (constructive Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory) and $\mathsf {IZF}$ (intuitionistic Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory), that further validate $\mathsf {AC}_{\mathsf {FT}}$ (the axiom of choice in all finite types). In this paper, we show that extensional generic realizability validates several choice principles for dependent types, all exceeding $\mathsf {AC}_{\mathsf {FT}}$. We then show that adding such choice principles does not change the arithmetic part of either $\mathsf {CZF}$ or $\mathsf {IZF}$.

We show that Church’s thesis, the axiom stating that all functions on the naturals are computable, does not hold in the cubical assemblies model of cubical type theory. We show that nevertheless Church’s thesis is consistent with univalent type theory by constructing a lex modality in cubical assemblies such that Church’s thesis holds in the corresponding reflective subuniverse.

We consider two preorder-enriched categories of ordered partial combinatory algebras: OPCA, where the arrows are functional (i.e., projective) morphisms, and OPCA†, where the arrows are applicative morphisms. We show that OPCA has small products and finite biproducts, and that OPCA† has finite coproducts, all in a suitable 2-categorical sense. On the other hand, OPCA† lacks all nontrivial binary products. We deduce from this that the pushout, over Set, of two nontrivial realizability toposes is never a realizability topos. In contrast, we show that nontrivial subtoposes of realizability toposes are closed under pushouts over Set.

A notion of strictly primitive recursive realizability is introduced by Damnjanovic in 1994. It is a kind of constructive semantics of the arithmetical sentences using primitive recursive functions. It is of interest to study the corresponding predicate logic. It was argued by Park in 2003 that the predicate logic of strictly primitive recursive realizability is not arithmetical. Park’s argument is essentially based on a claim of Damnjanovic that intuitionistic logic is sound with respect to strictly primitive recursive realizability, but that claim was disproved by the author of this article in 2006. The aim of this paper is to present a correct proof of the result of Park.

We develop a number of variants of Lifschitz realizability for $\mathbf {CZF}$ by building topological models internally in certain realizability models. We use this to show some interesting metamathematical results about constructive set theory with variants of the lesser limited principle of omniscience including consistency with unique Church’s thesis, consistency with some Brouwerian principles and variants of the numerical existence property.

We introduce the notion of implicative algebra, a simple algebraic structure intended to factorize the model-theoretic constructions underlying forcing and realizability (both in intuitionistic and classical logic). The salient feature of this structure is that its elements can be seen both as truth values and as (generalized) realizers, thus blurring the frontier between proofs and types. We show that each implicative algebra induces a (Set-based) tripos, using a construction that is reminiscent from the construction of a realizability tripos from a partial combinatory algebra. Relating this construction with the corresponding constructions in forcing and realizability, we conclude that the class of implicative triposes encompasses all forcing triposes (both intuitionistic and classical), all classical realizability triposes (in the sense of Krivine), and all intuitionistic realizability triposes built from partial combinatory algebras.

J. L. Krivine developed a new method based on realizability to construct models of set theory where the axiom of choice fails. We attempt to recreate his results in classical settings, i.e., symmetric extensions. We also provide a new condition for preserving well ordered, and other particular type of choice, in the general settings of symmetric extensions.

In this paper, we continue with the algebraic study of Krivine’s realizability, completing and generalizing some of the authors’ previous constructions by introducing two categories with objects the abstract Krivine structures and the implicative algebras, respectively. These categories are related by an adjunction whose existence clarifies many aspects of the theory previously established. We also revisit, reinterpret, and generalize in categorical terms, some of the results of our previous work such as: the bullet construction, the equivalence of Krivine’s, Streicher’s, and bullet triposes and also the fact that these triposes can be obtained – up to equivalence – from implicative algebras or implicative ordered combinatory algebras.

The paper proves a conjecture of Solomon Feferman concerning the indefiniteness of the continuum hypothesis relative to a semi-intuitionistic set theory.

We provide a characterization of realisable set covariograms, bringing a rigorous yet abstract solution to the S2 problem in materials science. Our method is based on the covariogram functional for random measurable sets (RAMS) and on a result about the representation of positive operators on a noncompact space. RAMS are an alternative to the classical random closed sets in stochastic geometry and geostatistics, and they provide a weaker framework that allows the manipulation of more irregular functionals, such as the perimeter. We therefore use the illustration provided by the S2 problem to advocate the use of RAMS for solving theoretical problems of a geometric nature. Along the way, we extend the theory of random measurable sets, and in particular the local approximation of the perimeter by local covariograms.

We give the natural topological model for ¬BD-ℕ, and use it to show that the closure of spaces with the anti-Specker property under product does not imply BD-ℕ. Also, the natural topological model for ¬BD is presented. Finally, for some of the realizability models known indirectly to falsify BD-ℕ, it is brought out in detail how BD-ℕ fails.

We define a notion of realizability, based on a new assignment of formulas, which does not care for precise witnesses of existential statements, but only for bounds for them. The novel form of realizability supports a very general form of the FAN theorem, refutes Markov's principle but meshes well with some classical principles, including the lesser limited principle of omniscience and weak König's lemma. We discuss some applications, as well as some previous results in the literature.

This paper proves that the disjunction property, the numerical existence property. Church's rule, and several other metamathematical properties hold true for Constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory, CZF, and also for the theory CZF augmented by the Regular Extension Axiom.

As regards the proof technique, it features a self-validating semantics for CZF that combines realizability for extensional set theory and truth.

F. Richman raised the question of whether the following principle of second order arithmetic is valid in intuitionistic higher order arithmetic HAH:

and if not, whether assuming Church's Thesis CT and Markov's Principle MP would help. Blass and Scedrov gave models of HAH in which this principle, which we call RP, is not valid, but their models do not satisfy either CT or MP.

In this paper a realizability topos Lif is constructed in which CT and MP hold, but RP is false. (It is shown, however, that RP is derivable in HAH + CT + MP + ECT0, so RP holds in the effective topos.) Lif is a generalization of a realizability notion invented by V. Lifschitz. Furthermore, Lif is a subtopos of the effective topos.
