The Eastern population of the Lesser White-fronted Goose (EPLWFG) Anser erythropus is shared between Russia and China. The summer range of the EPLWFG has been recognised as a continuous area extending from the Olenyok River in the west to the Anadyr River in the east and northwards from 64°N. The aim of this study was to provide information on breeding behaviour; nest-sites, nesting habitats, and time of nesting; nesting success; timing of summer movements including moult migration; moult timing, duration, and moulting habitats; site fidelity; and the effect of human presence. To accomplish this, we combined the results from field surveys with GPS/GSM tracking. A total of 30 summer tracks from 19 individual EPLWFG were analysed. We estimated breeding propensity in 93.8% of adult LWFG, and this factor did not seem to depend on breeding success in the previous season. Reproductive success was 13.3% in all nesting attempts. Non-breeders arrived three-week later and departed a week earlier. The EPLWFG are highly mobile during the summer. The core moulting site for the entire EPLWFG was discovered by this study and is located along the lower reaches of the San-Yuryakh and Kyuanekhtyakh rivers flowing towards the Omulyakhskaya Bay of the East Siberian Sea. The EPLWFG flightless period was 24.8 ± 2.8 days. A part of failured EPLWFG (43.7 %) migrated back to its early summer breeding/staging site after having completed moult. The strong site fidelity (100%) of adult birds to both nesting and moulting sites promotes the formation of local breeding populations, which could be considered conservation units if genetic studies support this differentiation. The EPLWFG selects the remotest and least human-accessible area for their remigial moult, and the main site was discovered with the help of tracking.
There is evidence that learning a second language (L2) can shift cognition toward that predicted for the L2 and that this effect might vary with L2 proficiency, age of acquisition, length of immersion, etc. Here we explore the previously neglected variable of language instructional conditions. Participants categorized motion events in a triads-matching task after being trained on two novel linguistic labels highlighting (in)transitivity through one of three instructional conditions. Participants who learned the relevant knowledge under a meaning-focused instructional condition (memorizing meanings of exemplar sentences) showed a higher likelihood of categorizing based on motion (in)transitivity immediately after training than a control group; those who learned under a required rule search instructional condition showed this effect only after additional practice; while those who learned through another type of form-focused instructional condition (direct metalinguistic explanation) did not show this effect even after such practice. These differences were obtained despite the fact that the three groups were matched on awareness of the target system at the level of understanding and near-perfect performance on a grammaticality judgment task. The findings are discussed in terms of the depth of processing in instructed SLA and models of language–cognition interactions.
Increasing instances of herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass have limited turf manager’s options for chemical control. Endothall inhibits serine threonine protein phosphatase, a novel site of action for warm-season turf, and endothall use in hybrid bermudagrass is not extensively reported. Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass response to endothall. Five herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass biotypes were treated with increasing endothall rates and compared to two susceptible populations. One glyphosate-resistant annual bluegrass biotype was 2.3- to 3.3-fold more resistant to endothall depending on trial and susceptible biotype, and all other biotypes were endothall-susceptible. Four field studies were established from 2022-2023 to evaluate the influence of endothall rate and application timing on bermudagrass and manilagrass turf injury and annual bluegrass control. These studies were arranged as a three-by-four factorial with three levels of application timing (fully dormant, 50% green, and 100% green) and four levels of herbicide (endothall applied at 1.12, 1.68, and 2.24 kg ai ha-1 and trifloxysulfuron applied at 27.8 g ai ha-1). Maximum observed turf injury was dependent on endothall rate and timing and was commercially acceptable (<30%) at the low and middle rates when applied to 100% green bermudagrass and all rates when applied to dormant turf. When applied to 50% green turf (mid-transition), endothall unacceptably injured warm-season turf regardless of application rate, but when applied during mid-transition, only the high endothall rate unacceptably injured turf 14 days after treatment. Endothall controlled annual bluegrass more effectively when applied during mid-transition and 100% green turf than fully dormant turf. When applied at 1.68 and 2.24 kg ai ha-1 to mid-transition and 100% green turf, endothall controlled annual bluegrass 83-95%. Results from these studies indicate endothall selectively controls herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass in warm-season turf but selectivity and performance depend on application timing.
We compared the effects of two waste-based culture media (M1 and M2) on the technological properties of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei 90 (L90) for its application as a secondary culture in Cremoso cheese. The following parameters were studied at different ripening times: pH (7, 20, and 40 d), microbiological counts, carbohydrates and organic acids (7 and 40 d), moisture, fat, protein and volatile compounds (40 d). The viability and the metabolic performance of the strain in cheeses were also verified along ripening. Lactobacilli counts in experimental cheeses manufactured with L90 were ~8 log CFU/g at 40 d, meanwhile adventitious lactobacilli reached ~4 log CFU/g in the control cheese (made without L90). The levels of lactic acid, citric acid and pyruvic acid were similar among cheeses at 40 d, reaching levels of ~1433 mg/100 g, ~172 mg/100 g, and 7 mg/100 g, respectively. However, the concentration of lactic acid showed numerical differences between experimental and control cheeses. The cheeses made with the adjunct culture showed lower residual galactose (< 588 mg/100 g) in comparison with the control cheese (836 mg/100 g), highlighting the potential of L90 to play a bioprotective role. In the same vein, orotic and hippuric acids were metabolized at different degrees in cheeses made with L90, reaching levels of < 3.7 mg/100 g and < detection limit, respectively, at 40 d. In general, volatile compounds profiles were not negatively affected by the culture media used. On the contrary, the production of key aroma compounds (diacetyl and acetoin) was positively affected by the growth of L90 in these alternative media. The results demonstrated that the L90 strain could be used as an adjunct culture in Cremoso cheese, regardless of the culture media employed for its growth.
Multiple instances of safeguarding failures and criticisms of poor process and weak governance have afflicted the Church of England for many years, despite repeated assurances that ‘Lessons would be learned’. An Independent Safeguarding Board has been formed and then abolished without being replaced. A report by Professor Alexis Jay, former Chair of Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, recommending the creation of two independent charities to oversee Church safeguarding has been passed to a Response Group and is being resisted by various groups within the Church. This article examines issues of the management of safeguarding within the overall governance of the organisation, compares issues within the Church with those which have been exposed by the Post Office Horizon scandal and considers the potential role of the audit function to concern itself with safeguarding matters as part of its oversight of risk management and corporate governance.
Weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) exhibit X-ray flares, likely resulting from magnetic reconnection that heats the stellar plasma to very high temperatures. These flares are difficult to identify through targeted observations. Here, we report the serendipitous detection of the brightest X-ray flaring state of the WTTS KM Ori in the eROSITA DR1 survey. Observations from SRG/eROSITA, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and XMM-Newton are analysed to assess the X-ray properties of KM Ori, thereby establishing its flaring state at the eROSITA epoch. The long-term (1999–2020) X-ray light curve generated for the Chandra observations confirmed that eROSITA captured the source at its highest X-ray flaring state recorded to date. Multi-instrument observations support the X-ray flaring state of the source, with time-averaged X-ray luminosity ($L_\mathrm{0.2-5\ keV}$) reaching $\sim 1.9\times10^{32}\mathrm{{erg\ s^{-1}}}$ at the eROSITA epoch, marking it the brightest and possibly the longest flare observed so far. Such intense X-ray flares have been detected only in a few WTTS. The X-ray spectral analysis unveils the presence of multiple thermal plasma components at all epochs. The notably high luminosity ($L_\mathrm{0.5-8\ keV}\sim10^{32}\ \mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$), energy ($E_\mathrm{ 0.5-8\ keV}\sim10^{37}$ erg), and the elevated emission measures of the thermal components in the eROSITA epoch indicate a superflare/megaflare state of KM Ori. Additionally, the H$\alpha$ line equivalent width of $\sim$$-5$ Å from our optical spectral analysis, combined with the lack of infrared excess in the spectral energy distribution, were used to re-confirm the WTTS (thin disc/disc-less) classification of the source. The long-duration flare of KM Ori observed by eROSITA indicates the possibility of a slow-rise top-flat flare. The detection demonstrates the potential of eROSITA to uncover such rare, transient events, thereby providing new insights into the X-ray activity of WTTS.
Since the turn of the 21st century, we have seen the development of an international movement that works in various ways to ensure that everyone in the world has access to adequate mental health care. There is indeed a great need for action, especially in countries with weak and underfunded health systems. The Movement for Global Mental Health (MGMH) is supported by strong organizations such as the WHO, academic institutions and NGOs. As this movement has gained momentum, however, it has been accompanied by fierce criticism, in particular from scholars of the humanities and social science, who see the global expansion of psychiatry as a medical discipline as a form of power-grabbing, neocolonialism and capitalist expansion. They also consider psychiatry to be a biologistic discipline, the justification of which they question, in continuation of a long anti-psychiatric tradition. This criticism prompted several adaptations of the MGMH and various efforts towards integration, but these have not been widely accepted by the critics. The following text primarily summarizes, classifies and critically engages with the basic arguments of the aforementioned critique. Theoretical misconceptions regarding the practice of psychiatry are clarified. Subsequently a specific project in Côte d’Ivoire is presented that demonstrates how contextual psychiatry can proceed and how unnecessary dichotomies and polarizations can be overcome in the interests of the persons concerned.
The popularization of intersectionality within political science, feminist scholarship, and activism has constituted nothing less than a paradigm shift (Hancock 2007a). Politics & Gender has been a critical actor in enabling change within our discipline. However, this development has been hard won and there remains much to be done to operationalize intersectionality in line with Black feminist theory, and to center women of color and other intersectionally marginalized groups within scholarship. This article both traces the evolution of intersectional approaches within Politics & Gender over two decades and articulates pathways for future gender and politics research which aims to employ intersectionality. We employ quantitative and qualitative analysis of articles’ foci on different inequality structures and categories, their methodological approaches, and how they employ the concept of intersectionality. Subsequently, we argue in favor of approaches which center rather than include diverse intersectionally marginalized groups, emphasize the normative commitments of Black feminist theory to transformative justice rather than liberal inclusion, analyze intersectional structures and institutions as well as individual experience and identity, treat the constitution of categories and groups as contextual and contingent, dare to address the dangers of “women” as a theoretical starting point, and challenge fundamental raced-gendered assumptions of liberal democracy.
Seeds rely on temperature to adjust their germination timing by modulating primary and secondary dormancy. The knowledge regarding an intraspecific variation in the germination responses to supra-optimal temperatures during imbibition within the Solanum lycopersicon species and its relation with pre- and post-harvest environments is limited. Here, we studied the impact of imbibition at 35°C in 17 genotypes selected from a multiparent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) population. We discovered a high genetic variability in the germination responses to heat, leading to thermotolerance, thermoinhibition or thermodormancy with different depths. While thermodormancy appeared more profound than primary dormancy, there was no correlation between the deepness of primary and thermodormancy. Post-harvest treatments influenced considerably germination at supra-optimal temperatures. Dry storage beyond the apparent loss of primary dormancy led to an increased proportion of thermotolerant or thermoinhibited seeds at the expense of thermodormancy in a genotype-dependent manner, thereby revealing cryptic genetic variation. Prolonged cold imbibition also led to increased thermodormancy in genotypes that produced thermotolerant and thermoinhibited seeds. The thermal history before and after flowering influenced primary dormancy and the germination response to heat during imbibition in a genotype-dependent manner, with high temperatures leading to increased thermotolerance or thermoinhibition at the expense of thermodormancy, suggesting transgenerational plasticity despite the domestication of the species. The high potential of the MAGIC population for quantitative trait loci mapping and causal polymorphism identification will be helpful in deciphering the regulatory mechanisms that lead to the plasticity of thermoinhibition or thermodormancy, as well as their connection to the parental environment.
This article argues that E.L. Mascall develops the eschatology of C.S. Lewis to answer three common critiques of the consensual doctrine of hell. First, Mascall argues that human persons are capable of refusing the love of God because their potential reciprocal love depends on a freedom to give the self, or refuse to do so, in an indissoluble union. Second, the perfection of the new heavens and new earth is not a numerical perfection, and the numerical imperfection of finite creation demonstrates that this is not God’s goal in creation. Third, human nature and Christian revelation reveal that persons are made with the capacity to receive grace and participate in glory, but this reception and participation cannot be coerced. In order to test the plausibility of this position, I present David Bentley Hart’s critique of Lewis’s particularism and Mascall’s answer to such objections.
How might constitution-makers write “transformative constitutions”? Scholars and policymakers have looked to constitutional design as a mechanism for societal change, for example, promoting democracy, equality, and social rights. In these efforts, accountability has most often been limited to government actors. Yet, constitution-makers are increasingly introducing the “horizontal” application of rights, a potent tool for transformation whereby private actors also gain constitutional rights obligations. We argue that a key predictive element in introducing this mechanism is a meeting of the minds in constitution-making processes, where interests and mutual commitments from a broad cross-section of society are expressed at the negotiating table. We test our theory, employing cross-national data concerning the adoption of horizontal application over time, and examples from specific countries’ experiences. Our findings support our theory, suggesting that powerful articulation of interests by expert professionals in inclusive processes is a significant factor in reshaping citizen duties and, thus, transforming society.
To develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Street Food and Beverage Tool (SFBT).
Design:
This methodological study contains two phases: a) tool development, which involves conducting a systematic review followed by expert evaluation of the items, the creation of a Nutritional Healthfulness Index (NH), and pilot testing; and b) evaluation of the Tool’s Validity and Reliability: Content validity was judged by an external technical group, which evaluated the adequacy and pertinence of each tool item. Construct validity was evaluated around schools by testing the hypothesis: In high-income areas, there will be greater availability of healthy food and beverages at street food outlets (SFOs), as measured by the NH-index. Inter-rater and test-retest reliability were assessed outside subway stations. Pearson’s correlation, Cohen’s kappa, and Content validity Indexes were used for reliability and validation. A multinomial regression model was used to estimate construct validity.
Setting:
Mexico City, Mexico.
Subjects:
80 SFOs at subway station exits and 1,066 around schools from diverse income areas.
Results:
The SFBT content validity index was satisfactory. The construct validity of the NH-index indicated higher values in higher-SDI areas. The NH-index showed a positive linear correlation between raters and across the first and second evaluations. The majority of item availability (>60%) showed moderate to strong kappa values for inter-rater and test-retest reliability.
Conclusions:
The SFBT is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the availability of foods and beverages. Compared to other tools, it can measure the nutritional quality of SFOs expressed as an NH-index.
This article makes a twofold contribution on the relationship between self/other securitisation, ambiguous threat constructions, and anxiety at the intersection of Securitisation Theory (ST) and Ontological Security Studies (OSS). First, we develop the concept topos of threat (TT) as a potent linguistic anchor in securitisation processes. TTs depict an entire self/other threat situation that warrants escape, serving identity needs while staying flexible and ambiguous. However, their frequent rhetorical deployment can blur the threat construction and increase anxiety: this challenges the classical scholarly assumption that antagonism necessarily alleviates anxiety. Second, we theorise metapolitics as an anxiety mediation strategy. Metapolitics is a mode of interpretation – a relentless analysis of surface clues to expose a deceptive, powerful adversary – which in the final event fails to alleviate anxiety. The dual practice of nurturing topoi of threat and metapolitics drives conflict because it sets in motion a vicious securitisation spiral that entrenches rigid patterns of self/other representation and fosters a bias of anticipating hostility. We employ abductive theorising: working with established theory alongside empirical discovery through a discourse analysis of Russia’s official rhetoric on NATO and the use of the TT ‘colour revolution’ since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2014.
¿Cómo se transforman las universidades latinoamericanas en el contexto del capitalismo académico? Exploramos esta pregunta desde una perspectiva sociológica, que enfatiza el papel de actores locales en la configuración de procesos de cambio social. A partir de una revisión sistemática de artículos periodísticos y de sesenta y seis entrevistas a expertos, docentes y autoridades universitarias, analizamos las dinámicas del sistema universitario peruano desde los orígenes de la reforma de 2014 hasta su crisis en 2023. Basándonos en el trabajo de Pierre Bourdieu, sostenemos que el capitalismo académico no es un fenómeno homogéneo ni inevitable, sino que sus lógicas dependen de negociaciones entre actores involucrados en el campo de la educación superior. En el contexto peruano, se observa un modelo rentista, que privilegia el lucro en el corto plazo, basado en cómo propietarios de universidades, rectores y académicos negocian y adaptan las exigencias de la reforma.
This investigation explores the potential formation of a relaxed equilibrium state, specifically the quadruple Beltrami state, in a three-component dusty plasma consisting of electrons, ions and negatively charged dust particles. This equilibrium state is derived by employing momentum-balanced equations along with Ampere's law. The quadruple Beltrami state is a composite of four Beltrami states, each associated with four distinct eigenvalues. Using the variational principle, we obtained the same relaxed state based on the system's constraints, which include magnetofluid energy, and the helicity of electrons, ions and dust particles. The unified flow is also derived. Dynamo action is investigated in two configurations: a rectangular geometry and a rectangular geometry with an internal conductor. Small-scale turbulent dynamo behaviour is observed in the former, while large-scale turbulent dynamo effects are noted in the latter. The magnitude of the magnetic field is found to be greater in the configuration with an internal conductor. Additionally, flow profiles are plotted as functions of Beltrami parameters and density variations of plasma species. This study contributes to the understanding of relaxation theory and the underlying physics of systems with an internal conductor, such as Saturn (planetary rings around a magnetosphere) and Jupiter magnetosphere, Uranus, Neptune, etc.
Increased ultra-processed food (UPF) intake is associated with adverse health outcomes. However, with limitations in UPF evidence, and partial overlap between UK front of package labelling (FOPL) and degree of food processing, the value of food processing within dietary guidance is unclear. This study compared food and drink from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) database based on micronutrient content, Nova classification and FOPL. The aim was to examine the micronutrient contributions of UK food and drink to UK government dietary micronutrient recommendations for adult females and males, aged 19-64 years, based on the degree of food processing and FOPL. NDNS items were coded into minimally processed food (MPF), processed culinary ingredients (PCI), processed food (PF) and UPF, and FOPL traffic lights. MPF, PF and UPF provided similar average contributions per 100g to micronutrient recommendations. Per 100kcal, MPF provided the greatest average contribution to micronutrient recommendations (14.4% [interquartile range (IQR):8.2-28.1]), followed by PF (7.7% [IQR:4.6-10.9], then UPF (5.8% [IQR:3.1-9.7]). After adjusting for healthy/unhealthy items (presence of 1+ red FOPL), MPF had higher odds of an above average micronutrient contribution per 100kcal than UPF (odds ratio (OR): 5.9x (95%CI:4.9, 7.2)), and PF (OR:3.2 (95%CI:2.4, 4.2)). MPFs were more likely to provide greater contributions to dietary micronutrient recommendations than PF or UPF per 100kcal. These findings suggest that UPF or PF diets are less likely to meet micronutrient recommendations than an energy-matched MPF diet. The results are important for understanding how consumers perceive the healthiness of products based on FOPL.
Alcohol use in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is under-researched. Previous reviews have explored substance use as a whole, but this neglects individual characteristics unique to different substances. Alcohol use in non-clinical samples is associated with diverse responses. To advance practice and policy, an improved understanding of alcohol use among people with ASD is crucial to meet individual needs.
Aims
This was a narrative systematic review of the current literature on the association between alcohol use and ASD, focusing on aetiology (biological, psychological, social and environmental risk factors) and implications (consequences and protective factors) of alcohol use in autistic populations who utilise clinical services. We sought to identify priority research questions and offer policy and practice recommendations.
Method
PROSPERO Registration: CRD42023430291. The search was conducted across five databases: CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsychINFO and Global Health. Included studies explored alcohol use and ASD within clinical samples.
Results
A total of 22 studies was included in the final review. The pooled prevalence of alcohol use disorder in ASD was 1.6% and 16.1% in large population registers and clinical settings, respectively. Four components were identified as possible aetiological risk factors: age, co-occurring conditions, gender and genetics. We identified ten implications for co-occurring alcohol use disorder in ASD, summarised as a concept map.
Conclusion
Emerging trends in the literature suggest direction and principles for research and practice. Future studies should use a standardised methodological approach, including psychometrically validated instruments and representative samples, to inform policy and improve the experience for autistic populations with co-occurring alcohol use.
In this study, we investigate the properties of energy thickness $\delta _3$ in turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flows, a parameter derived solely from the mean streamwise velocity ($U$) profile. Through an analysis of the energy integral equation for zero pressure gradient TBLs, we establish a close relationship between turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) production and $\delta _3$, offering a practical method to estimate TKE production, which is particularly useful in physical experiments where direct measurements are challenging. The significance of $\delta _3$ becomes even more pronounced in TBLs under pressure gradient. Through extensive analysis of numerical and experimental data, we show that the ratio between $\delta _3$ and the momentum thickness $\delta _2$ is a promising criterion for predicting flow separation. Moreover, we derive a new energy integral equation for TBLs under arbitrary pressure gradients, and provide approximations for TKE productions terms by $R_{uv}\,\partial U/\partial y$ and $R_{uu}\,\partial U/\partial x$, and dissipation term by the mean shear. Here, $x, y$ represent the streamwise and wall-normal directions, respectively, and $R_{uu}$ and $R_{uv}$ are the Reynolds normal and shear stresses. The accuracy and robustness of the new energy integral equation and the approximation equations are validated using direct numerical simulations data. Our results show that the TKE production by $R_{uv}\,\partial U/\partial y$ and the overall productions consistently remain positive, reflecting a continuous conversion of mean kinetic energy into TKE across all TBLs. However, under strong favourable pressure gradients, TKE production by $R_{uu}\,\partial U/\partial x$ becomes negative, indicating a reverse energy transfer from TKE to mean kinetic energy.
