This paper gives analysis of a semi-discrete scheme using equal order interpolation to solve unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. A unified pressure stabilized term is added to our scheme. We proved the uniform error estimates with respect to the Reynolds number, provided the exact solution is smooth.

In this paper, we focus on graphical processing unit (GPU) and discuss how its architecture affects the choice of algorithm and implementation of fully-implicit petroleum reservoir simulation. In order to obtain satisfactory performance on new many-core architectures such as GPUs, the simulator developers must know a great deal on the specific hardware and spend a lot of time on fine tuning the code. Porting a large petroleum reservoir simulator to emerging hardware architectures is expensive and risky. We analyze major components of an in-house reservoir simulator and investigate how to port them to GPUs in a cost-effective way. Preliminary numerical experiments show that our GPU-based simulator is robust and effective. More importantly, these numerical results clearly identify the main bottlenecks to obtain ideal speedup on GPUs and possibly other many-core architectures.

A heated triangular cylinder is suddenly cooled in a constant temperature bath. The transient heat conduction problem is transformed to the Helmholtz equation related to the vibration of membranes. Using the membrane analogy, exact analytic solutions for the transient heat conduction problem for three triangular cross sections are found.

It is very important to predict the bypass transition in the simulation of flows through turbomachinery. This paper presents a four-equation eddy-viscosity turbulence transition model for prediction of bypass transition. It is based on the SST turbulence model and the laminar kinetic energy concept. A transport equation for the non-turbulent viscosity is proposed to predict the development of the laminar kinetic energy in the pre-transitional boundary layer flow which has been observed in experiments. The turbulence breakdown process is then captured with an intermittency transport equation in the transitional region. The performance of this new transition model is validated through the experimental cases of T3AM, T3A and T3B. Results in this paper show that the new transition model can reach good agreement in predicting bypass transition, and is compatible with modern CFD software by using local variables.

In this paper, we consider a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem. The problem involves two small parameters that gives rise to two boundary layers at two endpoints of the domain. For this problem, a non-monotone finite element methods is used. A priori error bound in the maximum norm is obtained. Based on the a priori error bound, we show that there exists Bakhvalov-type mesh that gives optimal error bound of (N−2) which is robust with respect to the two perturbation parameters. Numerical results are given that confirm the theoretical result.

The stability behavior of the Leipholz’s type of laminated box columns with nonsymmetric lay-ups resting on elastic foundation is investigated using the finite element method. Based on the kinematic assumptions consistent with the Vlasov beam theory, a formal engineering approach of the mechanics of the laminated box columns with symmetric and nonsymmetric lay-ups is presented. The extended Hamilton’s principle is employed to obtain the elastic stiffness and mass matrices, the Rayleigh damping and elastic foundation matrices, the geometric stiffness matrix due to distributed axial force, and the load correction stiffness matrix accounting for the uniformly distributed nonconservative forces. The evaluation procedures for the critical values of divergence and flutter loads with/without internal and external damping effects are briefly presented. Numerical examples are carried out to validate the present theory with respect to the previously published results. Especially, the influences of the fiber angle change and damping on the divergence and flutter loads of the laminated box columns are parametrically investigated.

This article deals with the numerical solution to the magneto-thermo-elasticity model, which is a system of the third order partial differential equations. By introducing a new function, the model is transformed into a system of the second order generalized hyperbolic equations. A priori estimate with the conservation for the problem is established. Then a three-level finite difference scheme is derived. The unique solvability, unconditional stability and second-order convergence in L∞-norm of the difference scheme are proved. One numerical example is presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

We study the numerical identification of an unknown portion of the boundary on which either the Dirichlet or the Neumann condition is provided from the knowledge of Cauchy data on the remaining, accessible and known part of the boundary of a two-dimensional domain, for problems governed by Helmholtz-type equations. This inverse geometric problem is solved using the plane waves method (PWM) in conjunction with the Tikhonov regularization method. The value for the regularization parameter is chosen according to Hansen's L-curve criterion. The stability, convergence, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are investigated by considering several examples.

We apply the multiscale basis functions for the singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem on adaptively graded meshes, which can provide a good balance between the numerical accuracy and computational cost. The multiscale space is built through standard finite element basis functions enriched with multiscale basis functions. The multiscale basis functions have abilities to capture originally perturbed information in the local problem, as a result our method is capable of reducing the boundary layer errors remarkably on graded meshes, where the layer-adapted meshes are generated by a given parameter. Through numerical experiments we demonstrate that the multiscale method can acquire second order convergence in the L2 norm and first order convergence in the energy norm on graded meshes, which is independent of ɛ. In contrast with the conventional methods, our method is much more accurate and effective.

Inspired by the behavior of the blind for hill-climbing using a stick to detect a higher place by drawing a circle, we propose a heuristic direct search method to solve the unconstrained optimization problems. Instead of searching a neighbourhood of the current point as done in the traditional hill-climbing, or along specified search directions in standard direct search methods, the new algorithm searches on a surface with radius determined by the motion of the stick. The significant feature of the proposed algorithm is that it only has one parameter, the search radius, which makes the algorithm convenient in practical implementation. The developed method can shrink the search space to a closed ball, or seek for the final optimal point by adjusting search radius. Furthermore our algorithm possesses multi-resolution feature to distinguish the local and global optimum points with different search radii. Therefore, it can be used by itself or integrated with other optimization methods flexibly as a mathematical optimization technique. A series of numerical tests, including high-dimensional problems, have been well designed to demonstrate its performance.

In this paper, we use moving mesh finite element method based upon 4P 1–P 1 element to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations in 2D. Two-layer nested meshes are used including velocity mesh and pressure mesh, and velocity mesh can be obtained by globally refining pressure mesh. We use hierarchy geometry tree to store the nested meshes. This data structure make convienence for adaptive mesh method and the construction of multigrid preconditioning. Several numerical problems are used to show the effect of moving mesh.

Common silicate glasses are among the most brittle of the materials. However, on warming beyond the glass transition temperature Tg glass transforms into one of the most plastic known materials. Bulk metallic glasses exhibit similar phenomenology, indicating that it rests on the disordered structure instead on the nature of the chemical bonds. The micromechanics of a solid with bulk amorphous structure is examined in order to determine the most basic conditions the system must satisfy to be able of plastic flow. The equations for the macroscopic flow, consistent with the constrictions imposed at the atomic scale, prove that a randomly structured bulk material must be either a brittle solid or a liquid, but not a ductile solid. The theory permits to identify a single parameter determining the difference between the brittle solid and the liquid. However, the system is able of perfect ductility if the plastic flow proceeds in two dimensional plane layers that concentrate the strain. Insight is gained on the nature of the glass transition, and the phase occurring between glass transition and melting.

In this paper, we proposes and analyzes the mixed 4th-order Runge-Kutta scheme of conditional nonlinear perturbation (CNOP) approach for the EI Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) model. This method consists of solving the ENSO model by using a mixed 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. Convergence, the local and global truncation error of this mixed 4th-order Runge-Kutta method are proved. Furthermore, optimal control problem is developed and the gradient of the cost function is determined.

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) methods for the Boltzmann equation employ a point measure approximation to the distribution function, as simulated particles may possess only a single velocity. This representation limits the method to converge only weakly to the solution of the Boltzmann equation. Utilizing kernel density estimation we have developed a stochastic Boltzmann solver which possesses strong convergence for bounded and L∞ solutions of the Boltzmann equation. This is facilitated by distributing the velocity of each simulated particle instead of using the point measure approximation inherent to DSMC. We propose that the development of a distributional method which incorporates distributed velocities in collision selection and modeling should improve convergence and potentially result in a substantial reduction of the variance in comparison to DSMC methods. Toward this end, we also report initial findings of modeling collisions distributionally using the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision operator.

In this work, we study numerical methods for a coupled fluid-porous media flow model. The model consists of Stokes equations and Darcy's equations in two neighboring subdomains, coupling together through certain interface conditions. The weak form for the coupled model is of saddle point type. A mortar finite element method is proposed to approximate the weak form of the coupled problem. In our method, nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart elements are applied in the fluid subdomain and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas elements are applied in the porous media subdomain; Meshes in different subdomains are allowed to be nonmatching on the common interface; Interface conditions are weakly imposed via adding constraint in the definition of the finite element space. The well-posedness of the discrete problem and the optimal error estimate for the proposed method are established. Numerical experiments are also given to confirm the theoretical results.

In this paper, we study the numerical solution of the Stokes system in deformed axisymmetric geometries. In the azimuthal direction the discretization is carried out by using truncated Fourier series, thus reducing the dimension of the problem. The resulting two-dimensional problems are discretized using the spectral element method which is based on the variational formulation in primitive variables. The meridian domain is subdivided into elements, in each of which the solution is approximated by truncated polynomial series. The results of numerical experiments for several geometries are presented.

In this paper we first present a CG-type method for inverse eigenvalue problem of constructing real and symmetric matrices M, D and K for the quadratic pencil Q(λ) = λ2M + λD + K, so that Q(λ) has a prescribed subset of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This method can determine the solvability of the inverse eigenvalue problem automatically. We then consider the least squares model for updating a quadratic pencil Q(λ). More precisely, we update the model coefficient matrices M, C and K so that (i) the updated model reproduces the measured data, (ii) the symmetry of the original model is preserved, and (iii) the difference between the analytical triplet (M, D, K) and the updated triplet (Mnew, Dnew, Knew) is minimized. In this paper a computationally efficient method is provided for such model updating and numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper studies a system of semi-linear fractional diffusion equations which arise in competitive predator-prey models by replacing the second-order derivatives in the spatial variables with fractional derivatives of order less than two. Moving finite element methods are proposed to solve the system of fractional diffusion equations and the convergence rates of the methods are proved. Numerical examples are carried out to confirm the theoretical findings. Some applications in anomalous diffusive Lotka-Volterra and Michaelis-Menten-Holling predator-prey models are studied.

In this paper, the Chebyshev-Galerkin spectral approximations are employed to investigate Poisson equations and the fourth order equations in one dimension. Meanwhile, p-version finite element methods with Chebyshev polynomials are utilized to solve Poisson equations. The efficient and reliable a posteriori error estimators are given for different models. Furthermore, the a priori error estimators are derived independently. Some numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical analysis for the a posteriori error indicators and a priori error estimations.

In this work, the hybrid solution reconstruction formulation proposed by Luo et al. [H. Luo, H. Dai, P. F. de Sousa and B. Yin, On the numerical oscillation of the direct-forcing immersed-boundary method for moving boundaries, Computers & Fluids, 56 (2012), pp. 61–76] for the finite-difference discretization on Cartesian meshes is implemented in the finite-element framework of the local domain-free discretization (DFD) method to reduce the numerical oscillations in the simulation of moving-boundary flows. The reconstruction formulation is applied at fluid nodes in the immediate vicinity of the immersed boundary, which combines weightly the local DFD solution with the specific values obtained via an approximation of quadratic polynomial in the normal direction to the wall. The quadratic approximation is associated with the no-slip boundary condition and the local simplified momentum equation. The weighted factor suitable for unstructured triangular and tetrahedral meshes is constructed, which is related to the local mesh intervals near the immersed boundary and the distances from exterior dependent nodes to the boundary. Therefore, the reconstructed solution can account for the smooth movement of the immersed boundary. Several numerical experiments have been conducted for two- and three-dimensional moving-boundary flows. It is shown that the hybrid reconstruction approach can work well in the finite-element context and effectively reduce the numerical oscillations with little additional computational cost, and the spatial accuracy of the original local DFD method can also be preserved.
