In this paper, a numerical method employing a finite difference technique is used for an investigation of viscous, incompressible fluid flow in a tube with absorbing wall and slowly varying cross-section. The effect of fluid absorption through permeable wall is accounted by prescribing flux as a function of axial distance. The method is not restricted by the parameters in the problem such as wave number, permeability parameter, amplitude ratio and Reynolds number. The effects of these parameters on the radial velocity and mean pressure drop is studied and the results are presented graphically. Comparison is also made between the results obtained by perturbation method of solution and present approach.

We propose a non-traditional finite element method with non-body-fitting grids to solve the matrix coefficient elliptic equations with imperfect contact in two dimensions, which has not been well-studied in the literature. Numerical experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of our method.

The control of convective heat transfer from a heated circular cylinder immersed in an electrically conducting fluid is achieved using an externally imposed magnetic field. A Higher Order Compact Scheme (HOCS) is used to solve the governing energy equation in cylindrical polar coordinates. The HOCS gives fourth order accurate results for the temperature field. The behavior of local Nusselt number, mean Nusselt number and temperature field due to variation in the aligned magnetic field is evaluated for the parameters 5≤Re≤40, 0≤N≤20 and 0.065≤Pr≤7. It is found that the convective heat transfer is suppressed by increasing the strength of the imposed magnetic field until a critical value of N, the interaction parameter, beyond which the heat transfer increases with further increase in N. The results are found to be in good agreement with recent experimental studies.

This paper presents a numerical study of the sensitivity of a fluid model known as time relaxation model with respect to variations of the time relaxation coefficient χ. The sensitivity analysis of this model is utilized by the sensitivity equation method and uses the finite element method along with Crank Nicolson method in the fully discretization of the partial differential equations. We present a test case in support of the sensitivity convergence and also provide a numerical comparison between two different strategies of computing the sensitivity, sensitivity equation method and forward finite differences.

This paper is concerned with a stabilized finite element method based on two local Gauss integrations for the two-dimensional non-stationary conduction-convection equations by using the lowest equal-order pairs of finite elements. This method only offsets the discrete pressure space by the residual of the simple and symmetry term at element level in order to circumvent the inf-sup condition. The stability of the discrete scheme is derived under some regularity assumptions. Optimal error estimates are obtained by applying the standard Galerkin techniques. Finally, the numerical illustrations agree completely with the theoretical expectations.

This paper is concerned with a low-dimensional dynamical system model for analytically solving partial differential equations (PDEs). The model proposed is based on a posterior optimal truncated weighted residue (POT-WR) method, by which an infinite dimensional PDE is optimally truncated and analytically solved in required condition of accuracy. To end that, a POT-WR condition for PDE under consideration is used as a dynamically optimal control criterion with the solving process. A set of bases needs to be constructed without any reference database in order to establish a space to describe low-dimensional dynamical system that is required. The Lagrangian multiplier is introduced to release the constraints due to the Galerkin projection, and a penalty function is also employed to remove the orthogonal constraints. According to the extreme principle, a set of ordinary differential equations is thus obtained by taking the variational operation of the generalized optimal function. A conjugate gradient algorithm by FORTRAN code is developed to solve the ordinary differential equations. The two examples of one-dimensional heat transfer equation and nonlinear Burgers’ equation show that the analytical results on the method proposed are good agreement with the numerical simulations and analytical solutions in references, and the dominant characteristics of the dynamics are well captured in case of few bases used only.

In this work, two-level stabilized finite volume formulations for the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations are considered. These methods are based on the local Gauss integration technique and the lowest equal-order finite element pair. Moreover, the two-level stabilized finite volume methods involve solving one small Navier-Stokes problem on a coarse mesh with mesh size H, a large general Stokes problem for the Simple and Oseen two-level stabilized finite volume methods on the fine mesh with mesh size or a large general Stokes equations for the Newton two-level stabilized finite volume method on a fine mesh with mesh size . These methods we studied provide an approximate solution with the convergence rate of same order as the standard stabilized finite volume method, which involve solving one large nonlinear problem on a fine mesh with mesh size h. Hence, our methods can save a large amount of computational time.

This article summaries a numerical study of thermo-solutal natural convection in a square cavity filled with anisotropic porous medium. The side walls of the cavity are maintained at constant temperatures and concentrations, whereas bottom wall is a function of non-uniform (sinusoidal) temperature and concentration. The non-Darcy Brinkmann model is considered. The governing equations are solved numerically by spectral element method using the vorticity-stream-function approach. The controlling parameters for present study are Darcy number (Da), heat source intensity i.e., thermal Rayleigh number (Ra), permeability ratio (K*), orientation angle (ϕ). The main attention is given to understand the impact of anisotropy parameters on average rates of heat transfer (bottom, Nub, side Nus) and mass transfer (bottom, Shb, side, Shs) as well as on streamlines, isotherms and iso-concentration. Numerical results show that, for irrespective value of K*, the heat and mass transfer rates are negligible for 10−7 ≤ Da ≤ 10−5, Ra = 2 × 105 and ϕ = 45°. However a significant impact appears on Nusselt and Sherwood numbers when Da lies between 10−5 to 10−4. The maximum bottom heat and mass transfer rates (Nub, Sub) is attained at ϕ = 45°, when K* =0.5 and 2.0. Furthermore, both heat and mass transfer rates increase on increasing Rayleigh number (Ra) for all the values of K*. Overall, It is concluded from the above study that due to anisotropic permeability the flow dynamics becomes complex.

In this paper, we analyse the convergence rates of several different predictor-corrector iterations for computing the minimal positive solution of the nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation arising in transport theory. We have shown theoretically that the new predictor-corrector iteration given in [Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 21 (2014), pp. 761–780] will converge no faster than the simple predictor-corrector iteration and the nonlinear block Jacobi predictor-corrector iteration. Moreover the last two have the same asymptotic convergence rate with the nonlinear block Gauss-Seidel iteration given in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 30 (2008), pp. 804–818]. Preliminary numerical experiments have been reported for the validation of the developed comparison theory.

Modelling based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is by now effectively used in fire research and hazard analysis. Depending on the scenario, radiative heat transfer can play a very important role in enclosure combustion events such as tunnel fires. In this work, the importance of radiation and the effect of the use of different approaches to account for it were assessed. Firstly, small-scale tunnel fire simulations were performed and the results compared with experimental data, then realistic full-scale scenarios were simulated. The results show up the capability of CFD modelling to reproduce with good approximation tunnel fires. Radiation proved to be noteworthy mainly when the scale of the fire is relatively large. Among the various approaches employed to simulate radiation, the use of the Discrete Transfer model gave the most accurate results, mainly when the absorption-emission characteristics of the combustion products were taken into account. Finally, the suitability of the use of CFD in quantitative Fire Hazard Analysis is discussed.

We consider a scalar conservation law with zero-flux boundary conditions imposed on the boundary of a rectangular multidimensional domain. We study monotone schemes applied to this problem. For the Godunov version of the scheme, we simply set the boundary flux equal to zero. For other monotone schemes, we additionally apply a simple modification to the numerical flux. We show that the approximate solutions produced by these schemes converge to the unique entropy solution, in the sense of [7], of the conservation law. Our convergence result relies on a BV bound on the approximate numerical solution. In addition, we show that a certain functional that is closely related to the total variation is nonincreasing from one time level to the next. We extend our scheme to handle degenerate convection-diffusion equations and for the one-dimensional case we prove convergence to the unique entropy solution.

In this paper, an optimal bicubic finite volume method is established and analyzed for elliptic equations on quadrilateral meshes. Base on the so-called elementwise stiffness matrix analysis technique, we proceed the stability analysis. It is proved that the new scheme has optimal convergence rate in H1 norm. Additionally, we apply this analysis technique to bilinear finite volume method. Finally, numerical examples are provided to confirm the theoretical analysis of bicubic finite volume method.

The pullback asymptotic behavior of the solutions for 2D Nonau-tonomous G-Navier-Stokes equations is studied, and the existence of its L2-pullback attractors on some bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions is investigated by using the measure of noncompactness. Then the estimation of the fractal dimensions for the 2D G-Navier-Stokes equations is given.

In this paper, exact vibration frequencies of circular, annular and sector membranes with a radial power law density are presented for the first time. It is found that in general, the sequence of modes may not correspond to increasing az-imuthal mode number n. The normalized frequency increases with the absolute value of the power index |ν|. For a circular membrane, the fundamental frequency occurs at n = 0 where n is the number of nodal diameters. For an annular membrane, the frequency increases with respect to the inner radius b. When b is close to one, the width 1 – b is the dominant factor and the differences in frequencies are small. For a sector membrane, n – 1 is the number of internal radial nodes and the fundamental frequency occurs at n = 1. Increased opening angle β increases the frequency.

In this paper, we investigate the dependence of the solutions on the parameters (order, initial function, right-hand function) of fractional delay differential equations (FDDEs) with the Caputo fractional derivative. Some results including an estimate of the solutions of FDDEs are given respectively. Theoretical results are verified by some numerical examples.

This paper presents an efficient method to calculate the displacement and stress fields in an isotropic elastic half-space having a hemispherical pit and being subject to gravity. The method is semi-analytical and takes advantage of the axisymmetry of the problem. The Boussinesq potentials are used to obtain an analytical solution in series form, which satisfies the equilibrium equations of elastostatics, traction-free boundary conditions on the infinite plane surface and decaying conditions at infinity. The boundary conditions on the free surface of the pit are then imposed numerically, by minimising a quadratic functional of surface elastic energy. The minimisation yields a symmetric and positive definite linear system of equations for the coefficients of the series, whose particular block structure allows its solution in an efficient and robust way. The convergence of the series is verified and the obtained semi-analytical solution is then evaluated, providing numerical results. The method is validated by comparing the semi-analytical solution with the numerical results obtained using a commercial finite element software.

In this paper, we extend using the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method together with the front tracking method to simulate the compressible two-medium flow on unstructured meshes. A Riemann problem is constructed in the normal direction in the material interfacial region, with the goal of obtaining a compact, robust and efficient procedure to track the explicit sharp interface precisely. Extensive numerical tests including the gas-gas and gas-liquid flows are provided to show the proposed methodologies possess the capability of enhancing the resolutions nearby the discontinuities inside of the single medium flow and the interfacial vicinities of the two-medium flow in many occasions.

In this work, element free Galerkin (EFG) method is posed for solving nonlinear, reaction-diffusion systems which are often employed in mathematical modeling in developmental biology. A predicator-corrector scheme is applied, to avoid directly solving of coupled nonlinear systems. The EFG method employs the moving least squares (MLS) approximation to construct shape functions. This method uses only a set of nodal points and a geometrical description of the body to discretize the governing equation. No mesh in the classical sense is needed. However a background mesh is used for integration purpose. Numerical solutions for two cases of interest, the Schnakenberg model and the Gierer-Meinhardt model, in various regions is presented to demonstrate the effects of various domain geometries on the resulting biological patterns.

In this paper, based on the multi-symplectic formulations of the generalized fifth-order KdV equation and the averaged vector field method, two new energy-preserving methods are proposed, including a new local energy-preserving algorithm which is independent of the boundary conditions and a new global energy-preserving method. We prove that the proposed methods preserve the energy conservation laws exactly. Numerical experiments are carried out, which demonstrate that the numerical methods proposed in the paper preserve energy well.

This paper provides a proof of robustness of the restricted additive Schwarz preconditioner with harmonic overlap (RASHO) for the second order elliptic problems with jump coefficients. By analyzing the eigenvalue distribution of the RASHO preconditioner, we prove that the convergence rate of preconditioned conjugate gradient method with RASHO preconditioner is uniform with respect to the large jump and meshsize.
