1. The four systems of rearing dairy heifer calves, described in Part 1 of this series are now studied for their effect on absolute and relative growth rates to maturity.

2. Data on live-weights and measurements and the percentages of mature size attained by these at 44, 80, 104, 132, 182, 260 and 312 weeks of age are tabulated.

3. In all groups the measurement to reach maturity earliest was circumference of metacarpus followed in order by length of back, height at withers and width of hooks.

4. By 6 years of age all groups had attained approximately the same body size. Maturity in the LL group in terms of four skeletal measurements was delayed by only 9 months, and in the case of HL and LH animals by 5 and 4 months respectively.

5. All groups showed the same general pattern of relative growth but the effect of restricted feeding was to increase at the younger ages the difference i n percentage of mature size between early and late maturing measurements. After 44 weeks of age the rate of growth was most rapid in those measurements which were furthest from maturity then.

6. The rate of tissue deposition was markedly increased in high plane animals during early pregnancy compared with low plane. Evidence is presented to show that much of this was lost during lactation.

7. At first oestrus, animals in all four treatment groups had reached the same percentage of mature size for each body dimension (except for length of back in the LL group).

8. From data on 5 animals it is shown that although growth in height at withers and length of back ceased by 6 years of age there was slow but continuous growth in live-weight, middle and heart girths and width of hooks to 9 years of age.

Phyto-oestrogens are believed to have a range of beneficial effects on predominant Western diseases. A few studies on phyto-oestrogens in milk exist and show that the composition can be affected by feeding. Therefore, the aim was to study how feeding of lucerne and grass/clover silages (GCSs) affects the concentration of phyto-oestrogens in bovine milk. Sixteen Danish Holstein cows were assigned to a 4 × 4 latin square design with four cows per treatment per period of 3 weeks. The four treatment diets were lucerne silage (LS), 2/3 lucerne silage and 1/3 maize silage (2/3LS), 1/3 lucerne silage and 2/3 maize silage (1/3LS) and GCS. Milk was collected at the end of each period and feed samples on day 6, 13 and 20 in each experimental period. Milk and pooled feed samples were analysed for the concentration of isoflavones, coumestans and lignans. The content of isoflavones was higher and the content of coumestrol lower in the GCS diet than in LS, 2/3LS and 1/3LS diets. For the LS, 2/3LS and 1/3LS diets, the concentration of coumestrol and secoisolariciresinol increased with the proportion of lucerne while the concentration of isoflavones was similar across the diets. The concentrations of the formononetin, daidzein and equol in the milk were significantly higher for the GCS diet than for the LS, 2/3LS and 1/3LS diets. In particular, the concentration of equol was 62–291 times higher for GCS. The concentration of coumestrol was significantly lower for the GCS diet compared to the LS, 2/3LS and 1/3LS diets. No pattern for the concentration of lignans was observed. In conclusion, a high concentration of isoflavones, particularly equol, and a low concentration of coumestrol were measured in the milk from the GCS diet. In contrast, a low concentration of isoflavones and a high concentration of coumestrol were measured in the milk from the LS, 2/3LS and 1/3LS diets. However, the concentration of phyto-oestrogens in bovine milk is low compared to food sources rich in phyto-oestrogens but the high concentration of equol could possibly be of therapeutic importance.

Diet selection, live-weight changes and productivity per hectare of two breeds of goats (Cashmere and local Celtiberic) managed in natural vegetation dominated by heather, and the effect of stocking rate (high or low) in the Cashmere breed, were studied during four grazing seasons. Breed had a significant (P < 0.01) effect on the available biomass and its components over the experimental period as a consequence of the differences in dietary components selected by the animals. Local goats produced a greater reduction in short and tall heather and in the percentage of leaves in the tall heather. Live-weight changes were significantly (P < 0.001) different between breeds. Over all experimental years Cashmere goats maintained weight under both low and high stocking rate (4 and − 1 g/day respectively), while local Celtiberic goats lost 30 g/day.

Across all grazing seasons and experimental years stocking rate did not significantly affect individual live-weight changes of Cashmere goats. Productivity per hectare did not differ significantly (P>0.05) between high ( − 0.6 kg/ha) and low stocking rate treatments (4.1 kg/ha). However it was significantly (P < 0.001) worse for the local breed treatment ( − 51 kg/ha).

As a consequence, in these vegetation communities with low abundance and poor quality of herbaceous plants it will be impossible to develop sustainable systems from the animal production point of view, and their management would need to be integrated during the grazing season by alternating with vegetation communities with better quality.

The aim of this experiment was to study the effects of dietary energy level and source on foetal growth and survival and mobilization of body stores in concurrently pregnant and lactating primiparous rabbit does. Does were given a moderate-energy diet (≍9·9 MJ digestible energy (DE) per kg dry matter (DM); group M, no. = 23) or a high-energy diet (-12·2 MJ DE per kg DM). In this latter case, additional energy came from starch (group S, no. = 23) or starch and fat (group F, no. = 22). Primiparous rabbit does were mated within 12 h after parturition and were slaughtered on day 28 of gestation-lactation. During the first 21 days, the DE intake and milk production were higher in the group F than in the groups S and M (P < 0·05). On day 28 of pregnancy, the weight of adipose tissues and liver, as well as the lipid content of the carcass, were higher in the groups S and F than in the group M (P < 0·05). Foetal survival and weight were similar in the three groups. These results indicate that increased energy level of the diet did not improve foetal survival or growth in concurrently pregnant and lactating primiparous does. On the contrary, it could reduce the mobilization offat stores, especially if the energy source is starch.

Limiting the post-weaning intake of the young rabbit is known to improve its resistance to digestive disorders, whereas a degradation of its housing hygiene is assumed to have a negative impact on its health. This study aims at providing insights into the mechanism of digestive health preservation regarding both host (growth and immune response) and its symbiotic digestive microbiota. A 2×2 factorial design from weaning (day 28) to day 64 was set up: ad libitum intake or restricted intake at 70% of ad libitum, and high v. low hygiene of housing (n=105 per group). At day 36 and day 45, 15 animals/group were subcutaneously immunized with ovalbumin (OVA) to assess their specific immune response. Blood was sampled at 36, 45, 57 and 64 days of age to determine total and anti-OVA immunoglobulin type G (IgG) and haptoglobin levels. The cecal bacterial community was explored (18 per group) by 454 pyrosequencing of genes coding for the 16S ribosomal RNA, whereas cecal pH, NH3 and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations were measured to characterize fermentative activity. A 30% reduction in feed intake reduced the growth by only 17% (P<0.001), and improved the feed conversion ratio by 15% (P<0.001), whereas the degradation of hygiene conditions slightly decreased the feed intake in ad libitum fed rabbits (−3.5%, P<0.02). As poor hygiene conditions did not affect weight gain, feed conversion was improved from day 42 (P<0.05). Restricted feeding led to a lower mortality between day 28 and day 40 (P=0.047), whereas degraded hygiene conditions decreased overall morbidity (7.8% v. 16.6%; P<0.01). Both a reduced intake and low hygiene conditions of housing affected microbiota composition and especially dominant genera belonging to the Ruminococcaceae family (P<0.01). Moreover, low hygiene was associated with a higher Ruminococcaceae/Lachnospiraceae ratio (3.7 v. 2.4; P<0.05). Cecal total VFA and pH were increased (+19%; P<0.001) and decreased (−0.1 pH unit; P<0.05), respectively, in feed-restricted rabbits. Neither specific anti-OVA IgG nor haptoglobin was affected by treatments. Total IgG concentrations were the highest in animals raised in poor hygiene conditions after 8 days of restriction, but decreased after 19 days of restriction in high hygiene conditions (−2.15%; P<0.05). In conclusion, the degradation of hygiene conditions failed to induce a systematic specific and inflammatory response in rabbit, but reduced morbidity instead. Our results suggest that the microbiota composition would be a helpful source of biomarkers of digestive health.

In a new ranching area of Uganda recently cleared of trypanosomiasis, with a high level of disease control, adequate water supplies and extensive grazing on free range, three dam breeds, the indigenous Ankole and Zebu, and the Boran from Kenya, were mated to Boran, Angus and Red Poll sires.

Under artificial insemination, at least 10 % fewer cows were detected on heat than under natural service, and 15% fewer artificially inseminated cows actually produced calves than did naturally served cows. The introduced Boran females were not inferior in calving percentage to the indigenous Ankole and Zebu.

Relationships between dam body weight and progeny performance were investigated. The introduced Boran breeding cows were able to maintain their body weight as least as well as the indigenous Ankole and Zebu cows. While cows which calved regularly and reared their calves could not maintain body weight, it was found that heavier cows conceived at a higher rate than lighter cows, cows heavier at parturition weaned heavier calves than lighter cows, and cows that reared heavier calves lost more, or gained less, body weight than cows that reared lighter calves. It was therefore indicated that investigations into the reduction of lactation stress on cows by such methods as earlier weaning of calves, mating at the most suitable time of year, and possible nutritional supplementation at a stage in the cycle, should be commenced.

Twin lambs grazing with their dams at herbage allowances of 30 or 60 gdry matter per kg live weight per day (low and high, respectively) were weaned at 6, 8, 10 or 14 weeks of age. After weaning, the lambs were given a herbage allowance of 160 g dry matter per kg live weight per day.

Ewes on the low allowance ate less herbage, produced less milk and lost more weight than those on the high allowance. The lambs on the low allowance were lighter at weaning than those on the high allowance (137 v. 168, 16·2 v. 20·5, 17·9 v. 24·2 and 21·9 v. 30·4 kg at 6, 8, 10 and 14 weeks respectively).

Lambs weaned from ewes on the low allowance grew more slowly than the unweaned lambs when removed at 6 weeks, but not when weaned at 8 and 10 weeks of age. Weaning lambs from ewes on the high allowance reduced their growth rates at all weaning ages, despite the weaned lambs being grazed at an allowance which would not limit their intake of herbage. The intake of herbage per unit live weight by weaned lambs reached its maximum at approximately 8 weeks of age. After weaning, intake was higher for lambs from ewes on the low allowance than for those on the high allowance (38 v. 33 g organic matter per kg live weight per day). Lambs slaughtered at 17 weeks of age were heavier from the high allowance than from the low allowance. However, after 17 weeks of age the remaining lambs from the low allowance grew more rapidly than those from the high allowance, and when slaughtered at 25 weeks of age had similar weights. Treatments had no effect on the weights of the body components or carcass dimensions independent of their effect on empty-body weights at slaughter.

Twenty-five weaned 35-day-old piglets were used in a 35-day growth experiment to evaluate the effect of inclusion of chicory and ribwort forage in a cereal-based diet on growth performance, feed intake, digestibility and shedding of faecal coliform bacteria. A total of seven experimental diets were formulated, a cereal-based basal diet (B), and six diets with inclusion of 40, 80 and 160 g/kg chicory (C40, C80 and C160) or ribwort (R40, R80 and R160). Piglets had ad libitum access to feed and water throughout the experiment. Three and five weeks post-weaning faeces samples for determination of digestibility were collected once a day for five subsequent days. Additional faeces samples for determination of coliform counts were collected at days 1, 16 and 35 post-weaning. Piglets fed diet R160 had the lowest average daily feed intake (DFI) and daily weight gain (DWG), and differed (P < 0.05) from piglets fed diets B, R40 and R80. There were no differences in DFI and DWG between the chicory diets and diet B. Inclusion of chicory or ribwort had a minor negative impact on the coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of dry matter, organic matter and crude protein, whereas inclusion of both chicory and ribwort resulted in higher CTTAD of non-starch polysaccharides and neutral detergent fibre (NDF). The CTTAD of arabinose were higher for diets C160 and R160 than for diet B (P < 0.05), and the CTTAD of uronic acid was higher for diets C40, C80, C160, R80 and R160 than for diet B (P < 0.05). Age affected the CTTAD for all parameters (P < 0.05) except for NDF, with higher values at 5 than at 3 weeks post-weaning. The coliform counts decreased with increasing age (P < 0.05), but was not affected by treatment. The results indicate that inclusion of up to 160 g/kg of chicory do not negatively affect performance, whereas high inclusion of ribwort have a negative impact on feed consumption and consequently on growth rate. Both herbs have a higher digestibility of fibre compared to cereal fibre. Chicory and ribwort are both promising as feedstuffs to weaned piglets, but the low palatability of ribwort limits the inclusion level.

Keeping cattle inside on concrete slatted floors can be detrimental to their health and behaviour and is also costly. Therefore, 22 steers of the Swedish Red and White Dairy breed were used to investigate the effect of wintering outdoors on growing cattle. The steers had a mean weight of 310 kg at the onset of the study. During winter, 11 ‘indoor’ steers were housed in pens with concrete slatted floors and 11 ‘outdoor’ steers were kept in a field with access to a shelter and trees. From the end of April until slaughter in September, both groups grazed together. During winter, all steers were given clover silage ad libitum. They were weighed every month. The behaviour of the outdoor steers was recorded from November to the end of March. Outdoor temperature, wind speed and solar radiation were measured continuously. A heated model was used in order to calculate the climatic energy demand. The steers were never observed to shiver. They were not observed to use the shelter during daytime. The most frequently observed behaviour was ‘eating’, followed by ‘standing’. The lower the temperature, the more time the steers were observed lying down (P < 0·01). ‘Moving’ increased with increasing temperature (P < 0·05) as well as with increasing wind speed (P < 0·01). During the grazing period following the experiment, the former outdoor steers grew significantly (P < 0·05) better than the former indoor steers. However, there was no significant difference in overall growth rate from start to slaughter. This study suggests that the winter climate in this part of Sweden (latitude 60°N) did not affect in a negative way the welfare or the growth rate of steers kept outdoors.

Hypothermia with starvation is a major cause of neonatal mortality among lambs born outdoors. The results of selection for resistance to hypothermia (cold resistance) in newborn Scottish Blackface lambs are described. Cold resistance was defined as the time required to induce a decline in body temperature of about 4·5°C by means of tests involving part-immersion in a cooled water bath. From about 200 tested lambs (half males) four ram lambs with the lowest cold resistance and four with the highest resistance were selected and each mated randomly at 7 months of age to about 30 ewes to establish upward and downward selection lines. The progeny were subsequently tested for cold resistance and the selection process was repeated for four male generations. Tested females were allocated at 18 months of age to high or low lines according to their performance as lambs.

Preliminary half-sib analysis and sire-offspring regression gave estimates of 0·3 for the heritability of cold resistance. Response to selection was rapid but asymmetrical with a realized heritability for cold resistance of 0·27 (s.e. 0·13) for upward selection, 0·01 (s.e. 0·16) for downward selection and 0·17 (s.e. 0·09) for the line divergence.

Body weight at test was phenotypically, but not genetically, correlated with cold resistance. Rate of recovery from induced hypothermia was not significantly correlated with cold resistance. The results are discussed in relation to lamb mortality in the field.

The data used in these analyses were compiled from individual feeding records of 1832 pigs from 70 sire families using FIRE (food intake recording equipment) system from Hunday Electronics Ltd at the Cotswold Pig Development Company. Pigs were on test between 45 (s.d. 2·76) kg and 95 (s.d. 6·78) kg. Daily food intake (DFI kg), food intake per visit (FlV kg), number of visits per day (NV), duration of each visit (TV min), time in the feeder per day (TD min), feeding rate (FR kg/min) and number of non-feeding visits per day (NFV), were measured as means of test and DFI was also recorded as means of bi-weekly periods of test. Performance test traits ofbackfat depth off test (BF mm), food conversion ratio (ECR kg/kg) and average daily gain (ADG kg), over the test period, were also measured.

Parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood with a multivariate individual animal model. DFI had a heritability of 0·21 ranging from 0·18 to 0·26 over the four test periods. Correlations between DFI in each test period were high (rg = 0·75 to 0·99). DFI was highly correlated with performance test traits (0·61 to 0·78) but had low correlations with feeding pattern traits (0·0 to 0·24). The heritabilities of feeding pattern traits were low (0·06 to 0·11) with the exception of FIV (0·27) and NV (0·34) but correlations between feeding pattern traits were high. FIV, NV and TV were moderately correlated with ADG (rg = 0·49, -0·29, 0·33 respectively), BF (rg = 0·35, -0·15, 0·17 respectively) and ECR (rg = -0·12, 0·31, -0·27 respectively). Feeding patterns may be changed substantially by selection and the genetic correlations with performance test traits indicate that feeding patterns traits can be usefully incorporated in selection criteria to improve somewhat the accuracy of selection.

During three journeys of 15 h in a lorry and two sets of experiments in a trailer, the relative importance of ambient noise and vehicular motion were assessed by measurements of salivary cortisol concentration, heart rate and behaviour. Mean sound levels in the lorry were approximately 96 dbA with occasional episodes at 103 dbA. Vehicular motion was assessed in terms of numbers and magnitude of acceleration events registered by a triaxial accelerometer. The three lorry journeys showed, respectively, that heart rate was correlated with vehicular motion when sheep were loosely stocked (0·41 m2 per sheep) but not when they were tightly stocked (0·28 m2 per sheep); that heart rate sometimes tended to increase when ambient sound was greater and that the effect of sound was not as consistent as that of vehicular motion. In the first trailer experiment, salivary cortisol response was the same whether sheep confined in a quiet stationary trailer (60 dbA) were or were not exposed to extra noise (90 dbA) while heart rate was higher in the former condition. In the second trailer experiment when the trailer was being towed on public roads with or without extra noise (92·3 and 100·5 dbA respectively), heart rate and salivary cortisol concentration were both elevated compared with control sheep in a pen but the extra noise had no consistent effect. The sheep showed no orientation away from the noise source, nor was there any difference in their expression of a behaviour (standing with the head below the level of the shoulders) which could indicate discomfort. Hence vehicular motion can result in poor welfare in sheep, especially at loose stocking density but ambient noise was not found to have a consistent effect.

1. Thirty-one gilts were injected subcutaneously with 1,500 i.u. PMS on Day 15 of the cycle, and inseminated on the morning of the 2nd day of oestrus.

2. Twenty of the animals were killed 1 to 4 days after insemination to study fertilisation, and the remaining eleven were killed on the 25th day of pregnancy to study embryonic survival.

3. All animals exhibited normal oestrous behaviour, only two of them failing to return to oestrus by Day 19 of the cycle. Treatment with PMS shortened the follicular phase of the cycle in nearly all instances.

4. Eighteen of the twenty animals in which eggs were studied were fertile and within these 84·2% of the eggs examined were undergoing normal development, 2·1% were fragmenting, 4·0% were polyspermic and 7·8% were primary oocytes. Ten unpenetrated secondary oocytes (1·9%) were also recovered.

5. Of the eleven animals in which embryonic survival was studied, only eight were pregnant at autopsy; the remaining three had 35 to 44 corpora albicantia, but no embryonic remains could be detected in the uterus.

6. The average ovulation rate in the eight pregnant animals was 35·4, with a range of 13 to 48. However, the average number of normal embryos was 17·0, with a range of 7 to 28.

7. The percentage survival of normal embryos varied from 26% to 83%. Embryonic survival was better at ovulation rates below that of the mean (35·4); an abnormally large or complete loss of embryos occurred at ovulation rates higher than 36.

8. Despite the range in percentage survival, the number of normal embryos found at the 25th day of pregnancy in five of the gilts was considerably above that found in untreated gilts.

Small reference populations limit the accuracy of genomic prediction in numerically small breeds, such like Danish Jersey. The objective of this study was to investigate two approaches to improve genomic prediction by increasing size of reference population in Danish Jersey. The first approach was to include North American Jersey bulls in Danish Jersey reference population. The second was to genotype cows and use them as reference animals. The validation of genomic prediction was carried out on bulls and cows, respectively. In validation on bulls, about 300 Danish bulls (depending on traits) born in 2005 and later were used as validation data, and the reference populations were: (1) about 1050 Danish bulls, (2) about 1050 Danish bulls and about 1150 US bulls. In validation on cows, about 3000 Danish cows from 87 young half-sib families were used as validation data, and the reference populations were: (1) about 1250 Danish bulls, (2) about 1250 Danish bulls and about 1150 US bulls, (3) about 1250 Danish bulls and about 4800 cows, (4) about 1250 Danish bulls, 1150 US bulls and 4800 Danish cows. Genomic best linear unbiased prediction model was used to predict breeding values. De-regressed proofs were used as response variables. In the validation on bulls for eight traits, the joint DK-US bull reference population led to higher reliability of genomic prediction than the DK bull reference population for six traits, but not for fertility and longevity. Averaged over the eight traits, the gain was 3 percentage points. In the validation on cows for six traits (fertility and longevity were not available), the gain from inclusion of US bull in reference population was 6.6 percentage points in average over the six traits, and the gain from inclusion of cows was 8.2 percentage points. However, the gains from cows and US bulls were not accumulative. The total gain of including both US bulls and Danish cows was 10.5 percentage points. The results indicate that sharing reference data and including cows in reference population are efficient approaches to increase reliability of genomic prediction. Therefore, genomic selection is promising for numerically small population.

The effects of three levels of concentrate supplementation on the live-weight gain and intake of roughages of 12-week-old British Friesian female calves were examined. Each supplement was offered for 12 weeks to two replicates of five calves which were group fed. The following six roughages were studied; high quality hay, dried grass wafers, grass silage, barley straw, poor quality hay and maize silage. The digestibility of the roughages was measured with sheep by total collection of faeces.

Increasing the level of concentrate supplementation gave linear increases in live-weight gains of calves with all roughages, the greatest response occurring with roughages of low digestibility. The intake of roughage was depressed by increasing the level of concentrate supplementation, the greatest depressions occurring with roughages of high digestibility. Live-weight gains and roughage intakes were higher with dried grass wafers and lower with maize silage than would be expected from their respective digestibility coefficients.

Multiple regression equations were calculated to relate live-weight gains or roughage intakes to concentrate intake and roughage digestibility. These equations predict from the digestibility of a roughage, the amount of concentrates required daily to produce a given live-weight gain, and the amount of roughage which is eaten under these circumstances.

This trial evaluated the effect of maize supplementation on the ingestive behavior, nutrient intake and the resilience against gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection of hair sheep in a silvopastoral system containing tropical grasses and legume trees. In addition, it attempted to determine the metabolic cost of the natural GIN infection in supplemented and non-supplemented animals. Twenty-nine 3-month-old lambs (male and female), raised nematode free, were allocated to four groups: I-NS (infected, not supplemented, n = 8), I-S (infected, supplemented with maize at 1.5% live weight (LW), n = 7), T-NS (treated with moxidectin 0.2 mg/kg LW every 28 days, and not supplemented, n = 7) and T-S (treated with moxidectin and supplemented with maize at 1.5% LW, n = 7). During the 70-day trial, fodder intake, fodder selection, LW change (LWC), red blood cell counts (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht) and eggs per gram of feces (EPG) were measured every 14 days. Supplement consumption was recorded daily. Metabolizable energy (ME) and protein (MP) consumption from the feeds were estimated. Maize supplementation helped to improve the resilience of hair sheep lambs against GIN infections. The I-S and T-NS groups showed similar LWC, RBC, Hb and Ht (P > 0.05) and both were higher than those in the I-NS group (P < 0.05). No difference was found in EPG between the I-NS and the I-S groups (P > 0.05). No effect of sex was observed in the different variables. Although all groups showed low dry matter intake (DMI) (< 2% LW), supplemented groups (T-S and I-S) showed higher total DMI (fodder + maize; P < 0.05), hence higher ME and MP intakes than the non-supplemented groups (T-NS and I-NS). All groups showed similar fodder selection patterns. The estimated metabolic cost of parasitism was ME = 0.70 MJ/day and MP = 9.2 g/day in the I-S animals. Meanwhile, the cost in the I-NS animals was ME = 1.46 MJ/day and MP = 12.71 g/day. Maize supplementation was an economically viable strategy to control GIN compared with no intervention.

It is generally presumed that allosucking brings benefits to the allosucking infants. Nevertheless, the data supporting such a presumption are rare. The aim of the study was to determine whether allosucking has any impact on growth rates of the allosucking calves. Fifty pregnant hinds were observed between 28 May (1st day of calving) and 2 September (abrupt weaning of all calves) on a red deer farm at Vimperk, South Bohemia, the Czech Republic. Of the 50 calves born the growth curve was calculated for 39 calves. During their 1st month of life these calves were observed in 1015 sucking bouts. In 690 cases the calves sucked from maternal hinds and in 325 cases non-maternal hinds. Only 25·64% of calves sucked exclusively from maternal hinds. The prevailing type of sucking behaviour was a combination of sucking from maternal hinds and allosucking (74·36%). Calves sucking from maternal and non-maternal hinds showed 1·6-fold higher sucking frequency than did calves feeding from maternal hinds only. Our results indicate that to some extend allonursing behaviour of the hind may affect their calves’ feeding behaviour. The more non-filial calves the maternal hind nursed, the higher frequency of the sucking by their calves occurred. The groups of calves did not differ in birth weight. With increasing age, the relative body weight increased faster in calves sucking maternal hinds only than in calves sucking maternal and non-maternal hinds. This gain in body weight was not essentially influenced by the fact whether or not the calf’s maternal hind nursed non-filial or exclusively filial calves. However, at weaning (99 days), the lowest body weight occurred in allosucking calves whose maternal hinds were allonursing. The results suggest that allosucking does not mean an extra profit to the allosucker. Instead, in our subjects, allosucking was rather attributed to compensation of nutritional requirements based on a combination of various factors, such as discrete differences in body weight at birth and also later and allonursing of the maternal hind.

The Carbon Navigator has been developed to support the objective of reducing the carbon intensity of the dairy and beef sectors of Irish agriculture. The system is designed as a knowledge transfer (KT) tool aimed at supporting the realisation at farm level of the mitigation potential. The objective of this paper is to outline the potential role of KT in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the context of a growing body of science, which identifies potential mitigation. The EU policy framework for agriculture and the environment is examined in terms of its effectiveness in supporting the reduction in emission intensity of agriculture. The important role for KT in reducing agricultural emissions is highlighted. The Carbon Navigator is introduced as a potential aid to achieving improved adoption of emission-reducing technologies and practices at farm level. The paper outlines the criteria guiding the selection of mitigation technologies in Irish ruminant agriculture, describes the technologies and practices included in the system and outlines the basis for their inclusion. The approach of developing the Carbon Navigator to integrate into existing infrastructure and data systems as well as into the existing KT systems is outlined.

A total of 3200 milk samples from Holstein and Jersey cows were analysed for free glucose and glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) by an enzymatic-fluorometric method that requires no pre-treatment. The cows were primiparous as well as multiparous, and samples were taken throughout the entire lactation period. In addition, lactose, protein, fat, citrate and β-hydroxybutyrate were determined and comparisons between these variables were made. Data were analysed using GLM model for the effect of parity, breed, time from last milking and stage of lactation on variations in parameters in milk. Pearson’s correlations were generated between milk variables. P<0.05 was considered significant. Concentration of free glucose and G6P were on average 331 and 81 μM, respectively. Time from last milking (stay in the gland cistern) did not increase the concentration of these monosaccharides, indicating that they are not hydrolysis product from lactose post secretion, but rather reflecting the energy status of the mammary epithelial cells pre-secretion. Wide variation in range of these metabolites, that is, from 90 to 630 μM and 5 to 324 μM, for glucose and G6P, respectively, was observed. During the first 21 weeks in milk, free glucose increased whereas G6P decreased. Concentration of free glucose in milk is greater for primiparous than multiparous cows and greater for Holstein than Jersey cows. Concentration of G6P was not affected by parity or breed. The use of free glucose and G6P as indicators of physiological conditions and risk of disease is warranted for use as potential biomarkers for in-line surveillance systems on-farm.

The aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variability in the Turkish Arab horse population using pedigree information. This study is the first detailed pedigree analysis of the breed in Turkey. Pedigree data were collected from the National Studbook. The pedigree data for 23 668 horses, born between 1904 and 2014, were used in the analysis. From this data set, a reference population (RP) of 14 838 animals symbolising the last generation was defined. Demographic parameters, the inbreeding level (F), the average relatedness (AR), the effective population size (Ne), the effective number of founders (fe), the effective number of ancestors (fa) and the number of founder genome equivalents (fg) were calculated for the population. The average generation interval for the RP was 12.2±4.6 years, whereas the calculated pedigree completeness levels were 98.2%, 96.6% and 95.0% for the first, second and third known generations. The mean equivalent generations (t), the average complete generations and the mean maximum generations for the RP were 7.8, 5.4 and 12.2, respectively, whereas the mean F and AR were 4.6% and 9.5% for the RP. The rate of inbred animals was 94.2% for the RP, whereas the number of founders, the number of ancestors and the fe, fa and fg were 342, 223, 40, 22 and 9.6 for the RP. The large differences observed between fe, and the number of founders demonstrates that genetic diversity decreased between the founder and the RP. Contribution of the 14 most influential founder to the RP was 50.0%, whereas just eight ancestral horses can account for 50% of the genetic variability. Ne estimated via an individual increase in inbreeding per generation ( $$ \hskip3pt{\bar{\hskip-2ptN}_{{\rm e}} } $$ ), and paired increase in coancestry $$\left(\! \hskip3pt{\bar{\hskip-2ptN}_{{ eC}} } \right)$$ , were 74.4±3.9 and 73.5±0.58, respectively. The inbreeding increases with the pedigree knowledge. In addition, the decrease in inbreeding in last years is more noticeable.
