The effects of common and concurrent environmental stressors on the social behaviour of farm animals are poorly understood. Here, we report the results of a multifactorial experiment designed specifically to examine the individual, additive or interactive effects of elevated ammonia, noise and low light (LL) levels on the social behaviour of growing pigs. Social behaviour was measured in terms of the nature, frequency and duration of both initiated and response behaviours for 4 weeks following mixing of the groups. General activity patterns, group cohesion and social discrimination were also examined as a function of the environmental treatments. Elevated concentrations of atmospheric ammonia (∼20 v. <5 ppm) and LL intensity (∼40 v. 200 lux) had the most pronounced effects, particularly on the nature of social interactions, with pigs under these conditions showing more aggression in the early stages of the experiment. In addition, pigs exposed to a high level of mechanical noise representative of artificial ventilation (∼80 v. 40 dB [A]) were less submissive to aggressive acts, while pigs in ∼20 ppm ammonia showed more reciprocated aggression when in coincident LL (<40 lux). The results indicate that atmospheric ammonia at commonly experienced concentrations may undermine social stability, particularly in the presence of low lighting, though the mechanisms are currently unknown. These findings have implications for the welfare of growing pigs and hence policy makers and farmers alike, with respect to the improvement of welfare in intensive pig farming.

A function to describe live-weight changes of dairy cows between two calvings is constructed. The following measurements were used: live-weight level (scale), pregnancy parameter, maximum decrease of live weight during the lactation and the time during lactation at which minimum live weight occurred.

An analysis was carried out for each of 71 dairy cows of two genotypes, Dutch Friesian and Holstein Friesian crossbreds, given a high or a low concentrate diet. Data set 1 contained data of 40 weeks lactation and data set 2 data from calving to calving.

The mean residual standard deviation per genotype-diet group ranged from 11 to 14 kg. The mean R2 ranged over the subgroups in data set 1 from 0·715 to 0·792 and in data set 2 from 0·857 to 0·906. Diet had a significant influence on the magnitude of the decrease in live weight during the lactation (71 v. 46 kg) and the mean time during the lactation at which minimum live weight occurred. The latter time ranged from day 58 to 100 over the four groups and a diet effect existed. The pregnancy parameter could not be estimated accurately based on measurements during the first 40 weeks of lactation. The correlation coefficient between the pregnancy parameter in data sets 1 and 2 ranged from +0·13 to +0·78. The other parameters showed coefficients from +0·82 to +0·99.

Five groups of six Hereford × Friesian steers, approximately 1 year old and weighing 363 kg at implantation, were individually fed according to body weight and slaughtered 100 days after implantation. Group 1 was sham-implanted subcutaneously in the ear. Group 2 was implanted with 20 mg of the steroid oestradiol-17β group 3 with 140mg of the steroid trenbolone acetate; group 4 with oestradiol-17β in one ear and trenbolone acetate in the other; and group 5 with oestradiol-17β and trenbolone acetate as a single implant in one ear.

Groups 1 to 5 had mean overall live-weight gains (±s.e.) of 0·79, 0·88, 0·89, 0·98 and 1 15±0·067kg/day; mean feed conversion ratios of 9·30, 8·78, 8·45, 8·13 and 6·92 + 0·61; and mean cold carcass weights of 236, 246, 250, 252 and 257 ± 6.4kg, respectively. Oestradiol-17/? reduced omental (P <0·05) and kidney (P <001) fat. The two steroids appeared to produce independent and additive effects except when used together as a single combined implant (group 5), when the effect on live-weight gain was more prolonged. The mean concentrations of oestradiol-17/i in plasma in groups 2, 4 and 5 were greater than in the control group at 28, 28 and 91 days after implantation respectively (P < 0·001). Trenbolone acetate was present in the plasma in groups 3, 4 and 5 throughout the experimental period.

Data on 2,055 Welsh Mountain lambs showing wide variation in birthcoat type were used to study the association of birthcoat type with lamb survival and subsequent performance. Each lamb was assigned to one of six grades on the basis of its distribution of halo hair.

Lamb mortality up to weaning was associated with birthcoat type though the effect was significant only in the deaths of live-born lambs before 14 days of age. During this period fine birthcoated lambs showed the highest losses with a mortality rate of 13% compared with rates up to 5% for intermediate and hairy birthcoat lambs. The lowest overall mortality rates occurred among lambs with intermediate birthcoats.

Growth of 669 surviving ewe lambs did not show any significant correlation with birthcoat grade at any stage up to 18 months of age. However, the carcass weights and dressing-out percentages of 570 wether lambs were significantly higher among fine birthcoat lambs.

Fine birthcoats were also associated with better quality fleece grades, 86% giving rise to kemp-free fleeces with short fine fibres, while 92% of hairy birthcoats gave rise to kempy fleeces with coarser fibres.

The high prevalence of anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) throughout the world has led to the need for alternative worm control strategies. One of the possible substitutes to reduce the problems of drug resistance and residue is the evaluation/breeding of small ruminants for greater resistance to the GINs (organically produced), which in turn would be a helpful tool to predict the performance of an animal. At present, the existing diversity in the genetic potential to resist/tolerate GINs infection both within and between breeds has been validated. Successful selection of animals to define the genotype and identified resistance is related to the employed markers. A number of phenotypic traits such as faecal egg count (FEC), worm burden, serum antibodies, peripheral eosinophilia, packed cell volume, live weight, serum protein and albumin concentrations have been used for this purpose both in natural and artificial infections. Relatively resistant/tolerant animals have also been found to have mastocytosis, globule leucocytes, high levels of histamine and immunoglobulin (Ig) A and IgE concentrations. Of these traits, the principal and most practical measurement used to assess resistance status in animals undergoing similar parasite challenges is FEC. FEC has a positive/negative correlation with other biochemical, cellular and immunological parameters; however, the reliability of individual trial is often questioned and valuable information regarding the genetic makeup can be obtained from pooled data of a large number of trials and parameters. This paper covers all the aspects reported in the literature on various parameters considered to evaluate the resistance status of a range of small ruminant breeds.

A review of work reported in the literature was used to present quantitative descriptions of protein use in the growing pig. These are detailed in the text, which also points to preferred values, and to anomalies and lacunae. The review was prepared with the objective of allowing from its content the inclusive and quantitative modelling of amino acid requirement. Requirement was approached as the sum of the component factors: maintenance and protein retention. Ileal true digestible protein and amino acid requirements are presented in a form consistent with that forwarded for energy. Thus both energy and protein elements can be conceptualized within a single coherent framework. Priority uses for absorbed amino acids were assumed to be (a) to support endogenous protein losses resultant from the passage of food and incomplete re-absorption prior to the terminal ileum, (b) to replace lost hair and skin, and (c) to cover the basic maintenance losses which will occur as a result of minimal protein turn-over even when protein retention is zero. The bulk of the protein requirement was directly linked to the daily rate of protein retention, for which the linear-plateau response was accepted. For determination of the maximum rate of protein retention the Gompertz function was proposed, although the use of a single value throughout the growth period was not dismissed. The balance of amino acids for protein retention is specified as different from that for maintenance. Central to the approach was the proposal that the inefficiency of use of ileal digested ideal protein, even when not supplied in excess, was an expression of protein losses occurring as a result of protein turn-over. The requirement for the satisfaction of the losses from protein turn-over occurring as a consequence of protein retention, and therefore additional to the requirements for maintenance, was identified. Quantification was attempted with sufficient success to warrant its inclusion into requirement estimation. It was concluded that this element addressed previously inadequately explained protein utilization inefficiencies. Algorithms are presented based upon protein turn-over which appear to be consistent with empirical findings.

The ATP-binding cassette transporter G2/breast cancer resistance protein (ABCG2/BCRP) is an efflux protein involved in the bioavailability and milk secretion of endogenous and exogenous compounds, actively affecting milk composition. A limited number of physiological substrates have been identified. However, no studies have reported the specific effect of this polymorphism on the secretion into milk of compounds implicated in milk quality such as vitamins or endogenous compounds. The bovine ABCG2 Y581S polymorphism is described as a gain-of-function polymorphism that increases milk secretion and decreases plasma levels of its substrates. This work aims to study the impact of Y581S polymorphism on plasma disposition and milk secretion of compounds such as riboflavin (vitamin B2), enterolactone, a microbiota-derived metabolite from the dietary lignan secoisolariciresinol and uric acid. In vitro transport of these compounds was assessed in MDCK-II cells overexpressing the bovine ABCG2 (WT-bABCG2) and its Y581S variant (Y581S-bABCG2). Plasma and milk levels were obtained from Y/Y homozygous and Y/S heterozygous cows. The results show that riboflavin was more efficiently transported in vitro by the Y581S variant, although no differences were noted in vivo. Both uric acid and enterolactone were substrates in vitro of the bovine ABCG2 variants and were actively secreted into milk with a two-fold increase in the milk/plasma ratio for Y/S with respect to Y/Y cows. The in vitro ABCG2-mediated transport of the drug mitoxantrone, as a model substrate, was inhibited by enterolactone in both variants, suggesting the possible in vivo use of this enterolignan to reduce ABCG2-mediated milk drug transfer in cows. The Y581S variant was inhibited to a lesser extent probably due to its higher transport capacity. All these findings point to a significant role of the ABCG2 Y581S polymorphism in the milk disposition of enterolactone and the endogenous molecules riboflavin and uric acid, which could affect both milk quality and functionality.

Piglets are characteristically cold intolerant and thus susceptible to high mortality. However, browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) can induce non-shivering thermogenesis as a potential strategy to facilitate the animal’s response to cold. Whether cold exposure can induce browning of subcutaneous WAT (sWAT) in piglets in a similar manner as it can in humans remains largely unknown. In this study, piglets were exposed to acute cold (4°C, 10 h) or chronic cold exposure (8°C, 15 days), and the genes and proteins of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1)-dependent and independent thermogenesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, lipogenic and lipolytic processes were analysed. Interestingly, acute cold exposure induced browning of porcine sWAT, smaller adipocytes and the upregulated expression of UCP1, PGC1α, PGC1β, C/EBPβ, Cidea, UCP3, CKMT1 and PM20D1. Conversely, chronic cold exposure impaired the browning process, reduced mitochondrial numbers and the expression of browning markers, including UCP1, PGC1α and PRDM16. The present study demonstrated that acute cold exposure (but not chronic cold exposure) induces porcine sWAT browning. Thus, browning of porcine sWAT could be a novel strategy to balance the body temperature of piglets, and thus could be protective against cold exposure.

The review was prepared with the objective of allowing from its content the inclusive and quantitative modelling of energy requirement. Requirement is approached as the sum of the component factors; maintenance, protein retention and lipid retention. Conventional expressions of maintenance requirement, as some function of pig mass, were found unconvincing in their variety of expression of coefficients and exponents. The review concluded that maintenance is properly related to protein turn-over, and thereby requires at least to include elements of concomitant protein metabolic activity. It was also judged that maintenance costs might be farm-specific. The energy requirements for activity, gaseous losses and disease were identified as important, but unsatisfactory in their quantification. Exploration of the energy costs of uncomfortable ambient temperatures suggested that whilst the responses of the pig are open to sophisticated and relatively exact calculation, the description of comfort remained inexact. The efficiency of retention of lipid by direct incorporation was high and may comprise a substantial proportion of the dietary lipid supply. There was little evidence of variation in the efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy from carbohydrate for lipid retention. The linear-plateau paradigm for protein retention was adopted. The efficiency of utilization of energy for protein retention measured by a variety of approaches was found to be highly variable, prone to error and the literature confused. It was concluded that the efficiency of use of metabolizable energy for protein retention would be a function of at least: (a) the absorbed substrate being metabolized for the synthesis of body protein, (b) the rate of total protein tissue turn-over associated with the retention of newly accreted protein and not already accounted in the estimate of maintenance, (c) the mass of protein tissue involved in turn-over, and (d) the degree of maturity attained, and any influence maturity may have upon the rate of turn-over of total body protein. Algorithms for energy requirement are presented based upon protein turn-over and these appear to have some consistency with empirical findings.

This experiment compared growth, physiological, and reproductive responses of beef heifers with (MI) or without (CON) access to a creep-feeder, as a manner to stimulate metabolic imprinting while nursing their dams. On day 0, 60 Angus×Hereford heifers were ranked by BW and age (140±3 kg and 68±3 days), and assigned to pairs so all ranking criteria were similar between heifers within each pair. On day 1, pairs were randomly assigned to MI (n=15) or CON (n=15). From day 1 to 51, MI pairs and their dams were allocated to 15 drylot pens where heifers had ad libitum access to a corn-based supplement through a creep-feeder. The CON pairs and their dams were maintained in an adjacent single drylot pen. From day 52 to 111, treatments were managed as a single group on a semiarid range pasture. On day 111, heifers were weaned and allocated to two pastures (one pasture/treatment), receiving hay and a corn-based concentrate until day 326. Heifer BW was recorded before and at the end of the creep-feeding period (day 1 to 51), and on days 112 and 326. On days 0, 51, 111, 187, 261, and 325, jugular blood was collected and real-time ultrasonography for longissimus muscle depth and backfat thickness assessment was performed. Blood was also collected every 10 days from days 113 to 323 for puberty evaluation via plasma progesterone. Liver and subcutaneous fat biopsies were performed on days 51, 111, 261 and 325. Average daily gain was greater (P<0.01) for MI than CON from day 1 to 51, tended (P=0.09) to be greater for CON than MI from day 112 to 326, while BW on day 326 was similar between treatments. On day 51, MI had greater (P⩽0.01) plasma IGF-I and glucose concentrations, as well as mRNA expression of hepatic pyruvate carboxylase and adipose fatty acid synthase than CON. On days 261 and 325, plasma insulin concentrations were greater (P⩽0.03) in CON than MI. Mean mRNA expression of hepatic IGF-I and adipose peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma were greater (P⩽0.05) in MI than CON. No treatment effects were detected for puberty attainment rate. In conclusion, supplementing nursing heifers via creep-feeding for 50 days altered physiological and biochemical variables suggestive of a metabolic imprinting effect, but did not hasten their puberty attainment.

A key concern in beef production is how to improve carcass and meat quality traits. Identifying the genomic regions and biological pathways that contribute to explaining variability in these traits is of great importance for selection purposes. In this study, genome wide-association (GWAS) and pathway-based analyses of carcass traits (age at slaughter (AS), carcass weight (CW), carcass daily gain (CDG), conformation score and rib-eye muscle area) and meat quality traits (pH, Warner-Bratzler shear force, purge loss, cooking loss and colour parameters (lightness, redness, yellowness, chroma, hue)) were conducted using genotype data from the ‘GeneSeek Genomic Profiler Bovine LD’ array in a cohort of 1166 double-muscled Piemontese beef cattle. The genome wide-association analysis was based on the GRAMMAR-GC approach and identified 37 significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were associated with 12 traits (P<5 × 10−5). In particular, 14 SNPs associated with CW, CDG and AS were located at 38.57 to 38.94 Mb on Bos taurus autosome 6 and mapped within four genes, that is, Leucine Aminopeptidase 3, Family with Sequence Similarity 184 Member B, Non-SMC Condensin I Complex Subunit G and Ligand-Dependent Nuclear Receptor Corepressor-Like. Strong pairwise linkage disequilibrium was found in this region. For meat quality traits, most associations were 1 SNP per trait, except for a signal on BTA25 (at ~11.96 Mb), which was significant for four of the five meat colour parameters assessed. Gene-set enrichment analyses yielded significant results for six traits (right-sided hypergeometric test, false discovery rate <0.05). In particular, several pathways related to transmembrane transport (i.e., oxygen, calcium, ion and cation) were overrepresented for meat colour parameters. The results obtained provide useful information for genomic selection for beef production and quality in the Piemontese breed.

Breeding values for feed intake and feed efficiency in beef cattle are generally derived indoors on high-concentrate (HC) diets. Within temperate regions of north-western Europe, however, the majority of a growing beef animal’s lifetime dietary intake comes from grazed grass and grass silage. Using 97 growing beef cattle, the objective of the current study was to assess the repeatability of both feed intake and feed efficiency across 3 successive dietary test periods comprising grass silage plus concentrates (S+C), grazed grass (GRZ) and a HC diet. Individual DM intake (DMI), DMI/kg BW and feed efficiency-related parameters, residual feed intake (RFI) and gain to feed ratio (G : F) were assessed. There was a significant correlation for DMI between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.32; P < 0.01) as well as between the S+C and HC periods (r = 0.41; P < 0.001), whereas there was no association for DMI between the GRZ and HC periods. There was a significant correlation for DMI/kg BW between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.33; P < 0.01) and between the S+C and HC periods (r = 0.40; P < 0.001), but there was no association for the trait between the GRZ and HC periods. There was a significant correlation for RFI between the S+C and GRZ periods (r = 0.25; P < 0.05) as well as between S+C and HC periods (r = 0.25; P < 0.05), whereas there was no association for RFI between the GRZ and HC periods. Gain to feed ratio was not correlated between any of the test periods. A secondary aspect of the study demonstrated that traits recorded in the GRZ period relating to grazing bite rate, the number of daily grazing bouts and ruminating bouts were associated with DMI (r = 0.28 to 0.42; P < 0.05 - 0.001), DMI/kg BW (r = 0.36 to 0.45; P < 0.01 - 0.001) and RFI (r = 0.31 to 0.42; P < 0.05 - 0.001). Additionally, the number of ruminating boli produced per day and per ruminating bout were associated with G : F (r = 0.28 and 0.26, respectively; P < 0.05). Results from this study demonstrate that evaluating animals for both feed intake and feed efficiency indoors on HC diets may not reflect their phenotypic performance when consuming conserved forage-based diets indoors or when grazing pasture.

Group housing of gestating sows benefits their welfare by allowing them freedom of movement and the opportunity for social interaction. However, social life could also bring disadvantages for individuals who receive direct aggression or are displaced from the feeder. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between social behaviour, body condition and live weight. Gestating sows (n=298) were investigated on a commercial farm. Sows were housed in mixed parity groups where two single space, ad libitum trough feeders served 12 animals. Sows were weighed, body condition scored and had their back fat layer measured at mixing, 4 weeks after insemination and again before farrowing. Social status was estimated based on the numbers of won and lost agonistic interactions at mixing and at the end of gestation. In addition, tear staining was scored before the farrowing and reproductive performance data were collected. With the aid of video recordings, 100 to 150 interactions per group were observed. Winning percentage at mixing and at the end of gestation were associated (P<0.05) and appeared relatively stable within individuals. Tear staining scores and litter sizes were not associated with winning percentage at the end of gestation. However, live weight, relative weight, body condition and back fat thickness were associated with winning percentage (P<0.05), giving heavier animals an advantage. Low winning percentage related to lower live weight gain, probably due to poorer success in competition for feed. Live weight within a mixed parity group could be used as a proxy measure for social status. Sows with low body condition score and submissive sows might need special attention with regard to group dynamics and housing to alleviate the effects of competition in group housing.

In two experiments over 2 years, 113 North Country Cheviot and 132 South Country Cheviot hill ewes were differentially group-fed over a 10-week period to achieve either good or moderate body con- dition. Ewes were maintained in these levels of condition over the 5 weeks prior to mating. After mating, ewes were killed either on return to service or between days 23 and 85 for counts of corpora lutea and viable embryos.

Ovulation rate in each breed was positively related to body condition at mating. Embryo mortality, as ova loss, was not influenced overall by breed, type of ovulation, year of recording, or body condition. Although comparisons of loss were partly confounded by a differen- tial distribution in the number of ova shed in each breed and body condition group, there was an apparent breed difference in loss of single- and multiple-shed ova. Potential lambing rate therefore showed greater response to improved body condition at mating in the North Country Cheviot breed than it did in the South Country Cheviot.

The influence of breed and sex on relative growth patterns of muscle, bone and fat in beef cattle has been investigated. Comparisons were made of growth coefficients estimated using Huxley's (1932) allometric equation relating muscle, bone or fat to muscle plus bone using data from the dissection of half carcasses of 63 young bulls, 106 steers and 22 heifers representing a number of breed groups. Growth coefficients for muscle and for bone were found to be similar among different breed groups of bulls, steers and heifers. The proportion of muscle increased and that of bone decreased as the size of animal, measured by muscle plus bone, increased. Muscle and bone weights adjusted to common muscle plus bone weights were significantly different among breed groups within sex. Differences in amount of muscle relative to bone were therefore established at earlier stages of growth and maintained over the period represented in the present study.

Growth coefficients for fat were significantly different among breed groups within sexes.

Sex within breed group had no statistically significant influence on growth coefficients for muscle or for bone. Muscle and bone weights adjusted to a common muscle plus bone weight were similar for sex groups within all breed group comparisons. Sex did not have a marked effect on rate of fattening since differences between growth coefficients for fat (between sexes, within breeds) were not statistically significant—although in all comparisons growth coefficients for fat were lowest for bulls, intermediate for steers and highest for heifers. Sexes differed in weight of fat adjusted to common muscle plus bone weight, heifers being fatter than steers and steers fatter than bulls, a difference probably resulting more from early onset of the fattening phase in heifers, followed by steers, rather than relative rate of fattening.

The generation of profit in dairy production can be approximated by a generalized profit equation, which is a function of the genotype of the animals used. In the absence of legislated quotas on production, the economic weights for traits contributing to profit, for use in a selection index, have been shown to be simple functions of the partial derivatives of profit with respect to output of the traits. These functions reflect the fact that output in most agricultural industries will already be maximized, either because of saturated markets or limitations on total inputs. When a single quota applies, different functions result, which reflect the downward rescaling of enterprise size as output per animal of a trait under quota is increased. Difficulties arise when multiple non-independent quotas apply, such as in the United Kingdom (UK) milk market where quotas are triggered by both milk volume and fat concentration. The functions describing the economic weights are then dependent on the form of the dependency between the quota criteria and on the genetic change resulting from the applied selection index. Economic weights for milk volume, fat, protein and lactose yield applicable to Holstein'Friesian cattle in the UK were found to be –1·6 p/1, 76·6 p/kg, 170·0 p/kg and 7·0 p/kg, scaled to 1986 prices. These weights would not change much if the quota were changed to fat yield only. Use of appropriate selection indexes should result in genetic increases of milk volume, fat, protein and lactose yield, with gradual increases in fat and protein concentrations and the fat to protein ratio. In most situations, selecting on the combined evaluation for fat plus protein yield would be a simple procedure with high efficiency (0·995 of maximum efficiency).

Producers have the possibility to combat human-induced dryland salinity by planting salt-tolerant plants such as saltbush. Saltbush has the potential to be used as a source of food for livestock at a time and place where pasture is not viable. However, saltbush contains high concentrations of sodium chloride salt and some other anti-nutritional factors that have the potential to affect feed and water intake and, directly or indirectly, the reproductive capacity of sheep. High-salt diet during gestation induces a small modification of the activity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) that has an important role in the maintenance of the salt-water balance in non-pregnant and pregnant sheep. In contrast, the main effect of salt ingestion during pregnancy is observed on the biology of the offspring, with changes in the response of the RAS to salt ingestion and altered thirst threshold in response to an oral salt ingestion. These changes, observed later in life, are the result of fetal programming following the ingestion of salt by the mother. It seems that the exposure to salt during pregnancy could provide an advantage to the offspring because of this adaptive response. The response may be particularly useful, for example, when grazing herbivores are fed halophytic forages adapted to saline soils.

Standard feeds are imbalanced in term of n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) ratio, with a low proportion of the latter. The reproductive system appears to be strongly affected by administration of n-3 PUFA, and ingredients rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA; i.e. vegetable sources) or EPA and DHA acids (i.e. fish oil) can be included in animal diets to balance PUFA intake. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with flaxseed (ALA) or fish oil (EPA and DHA) on PUFA metabolism in rabbit does. A total of 60 New Zealand White female rabbits were assigned to three experimental groups: control group, FLAX group fed 10% extruded flaxseed and FISH group fed 3% fish oil. Blood, milk, liver and ovaries were collected from the does to assess the lipid composition; furthermore, FADS2 gene expression was assessed in liver and ovary tissues. Reproductive performance of does was also recorded. The fertility rate and number of weaned rabbits improved with n-3 dietary supplementation: does at first parity showed the lowest reproductive results, but the administration of n-3 reduced the gap between primiparous and multiparous does. Feed consumption and milk production were not affected by the feeding regime. The fatty acid composition of milk, plasma, liver and ovaries were widely influenced by diet, showing higher concentrations of n-3 long-chain PUFA (LCP) in does fed with n-3 enriched diets. FISH diet resulted in the highest n-3 LCP enrichment, whereas in the FLAX group, this increase was lower. Blood and milk showed low levels of LCP, whereas liver and ovaries were the main sites of n-3 LCP synthesis and accumulation. Accordingly, although the liver is the main metabolic centre for LCP synthesis, ovaries also have a prominent role in LCP generation. FADS2 expression in liver and ovary tissue was downregulated by FISH administration. In conclusion, the enrichment of diets with n-3 PUFA could be an effective strategy for improving the reproductive performance of does.

This in vitro study aimed at understanding how abiotic, that is chemical and electrochemical potentials, and biotic factors combine to impact the outputs of rumen volatile fatty acid (VFA). Using a 48-run design optimized by means of an exchange algorithm, the curvilinear effects of pH, Eh and partial pressure of dihydrogen (H2) on fermentation yields were investigated in 6-h batch cultures of mixed rumen microbes, fed on glucose so as to bypass the enzymatic hydrolysis and conversion steps preceding the glycolytic pathway. The role played by rumen microbiota in the expression of these effects was explored by testing three inocula grown on feeds supplying a microflora adapted to fibre, slowly degradable or readily degradable starch as the dominant dietary polysaccharide. Data were fitted to 2nd-order polynomial models. In fibre-adapted cultures, the yields of major VFA were mainly influenced by pH and H2 partial pressure, in opposite ways. In wheat grain-adapted cultures, the VFA yields underwent the opposite influences of pH, in a curvilinear way for propionate, and Eh since acetate production yield was not significantly modified by any factor. In maize grain-adapted cultures, acetate production yield was not modified by any factor but H2 in a quadratic way when the production yields of higher VFA underwent opposite influences of pH and Eh. In conclusion, the effects of environmental factors were dependent on the nature of the inoculum, a major source of variation, and more particularly on its adaptation to high- or low-fibre diets. These effects were loosely interrelated, the pH being the most active factor before the Eh and H2 partial pressure.

Selection decisions in breeding schemes can involve choices between candidates evaluated to different accuracies. A Bayesian framework is put forward for choosing among candidates, and it is shown that attaching loss functions for estimation errors makes this process different from selecting upon best linear unbiased predictions alone. Examples are given using both linear and quadratic loss to show that when estimation errors are penalized, the selection process tends to select more unrelated and more accurately evaluated individuals. In a dairy cattle breeding scheme response was only slightly lower than that from selection on expected breeding values but with a much reduced coefficient of variation. However, if prediction errors are preferred, with the hope of selecting individuals whose breeding value are higher than expected, extra genetic progress could be obtained by favouring the selection of individuals with low accuracy. This requires consideration of more than a single generation.

With discrete generations and equal measurements on candidates the decision framework was shown to be equivalent to a single quadratic restriction on the selection scores of parents in the previous generation.

A framework based on Bayes decision theory could be simply applied to produce a flexible means for producers to select according to their individual risk preferences.
