Genetic parameters of weight traits, ultrasonic fat and muscle depths, maternal effects and reproductive traits of Welsh Mountain sheep were estimated based on analyses of data from the nucleus flock of a cooperative breeding scheme. The traits analysed were 12 week weight (TW, no. = 11201), mature weight (MW, no. = 2376), weight at scanning (SW, no. = 1022), muscle depth (SM, no. = 1024), fat depth (SF, no. = 1024), litter weaning weight (LW, no. = 3445) and litter size (LS, no. = 3445). (Co)variance components were estimated in univariate and bivariate animal models. Heritability estimates from univariate analyses were 0.16, 0·49, 0·29, 0·24, 0·22, 0·20 and 0.15 for TW, MW, SW, SF, SM, LW and LS respectively. Genetic correlations among the weight traits were high. There was no detectable correlation between SF and SM. SF and SM were strongly correlated with SW but not with the other weight traits. LW was strongly correlated with MW and SW but not with TW, although the latter analysis was inconclusive. Maternal heritability was similar (0·11) for the univariate analysis of TW and all bivariate analyses involving TW (except for TW v. LW). The permanent environmental effect of dam was generally low (0.02 to 0.04) whilst litter effects were generally high (0·20 to 0·23). The correlation between direct and maternal genetic effects for TW were generally small and non-significant. The maternal genetic effect for TW was moderately correlated with the direct additive effect for MW and SW but was not significantly correlated with the direct additive effect for LS, SM or SF. A very large positive correlation was found between the maternal genetic effect for TW and the direct additive effect for LW. The implications of the results are discussed in the context of selection indices for Welsh Mountain sheep.

Ewes of seven breeds (Oxford Down, Border Leicester, Finnish Landrace, Southdown, Welsh Mountain, Tasmanian Merino and Soay) were treated with progestagen-treated sponges to synchronize oestrus for an egg-transfer experiment. Ewes of five of the breeds were treated with superovulating doses of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). Mean body weight ranged from 89 kg for Oxford Downs to 20 kg for Soays. Interval from sponge withdrawal to oestrus differed significantly between breeds, ranging from 1·83 days in Finnish Landrace to 3·00 days for Soays, but was not consistently related to ewe weight. Treatment with PMSG prior to sponge removal reduced the interval to oestrus; fertilization rate at the first synchronized oestrus was low. There were marked differences among breeds in proportion of ewes showing oestrus following PMSG treatment, total follicular response, and proportion of follicles ovulated. Ewes of the Finnish Landrace breed, with the highest natural fertility, were equal or superior to the other breeds in every component of response, and yielded more than double the number of fertilized eggs per ewe of the next best breed. Finnish Landrace females 6 to 9 months old made very satisfactory donors. Natural ovulation rates of adult recipient ewes were as follows: Welsh Mountain (23 ewes)—1·43; Border Leicester (15 ewes)—2·00; Finnish Landrace (26 ewes)—3·31.

Digestibility of the major chemical components in diets high in plant cell-wall constituents was determined with four pigs. Two were given a commercial pig meal and two were given, in addition, alkali-treated straw (25% of the diet). Dry-matter digestibility of the straw was 32%, and protein excretion in faeces was increased by the addition of straw to the basal diet. Calculations based on microbial protein synthesis per gram of organic matter fermented showed that the additional nitrogen in the faeces may have been almost entirely microbial in origin.

In a second experiment, ground lucerne was progressively introduced into the diet in substitution for commercial pig meal. There was no obvious associative effect on the digestibility of the chemical components examined. Apparent digestibility of dry matter of the all-lucerne diet was 53%.

Mechanistic animal growth models can incorporate a description of the genotype as represented by underlying biological traits that aim to specify the animal's genetic potential for performance, independent from the environmental factors captured by the models. It can be argued that these traits may therefore be more closely associated to genetic potential, or components of genetic merit that are more robust across environments, than the environmentally dependent phenotypic traits currently used for genetic evaluation. The prediction of merit for underlying biological traits can be valuable for breeding and development of selection strategies across environments.

Model inversion has been identified as a valid method for obtaining estimates of phenotypic and genetic components of the biological traits representing the genotype in the mechanistic model. The present study shows how these estimates were obtained for two existing pig breeds based on genetic and phenotypic components of existing performance trait records. Some of the resulting parameter estimates associated with each breed differ substantially, implying that the genetic differences between the breeds are represented in the underlying biological traits. The estimated heritabilities for the genetic potentials for growth, carcass composition and feed efficiency as represented by biological traits exceed the heritability estimates of related phenotypic traits that are currently used in evaluation processes for both breeds. The estimated heritabilities for maintenance energy requirements are however relatively small, suggesting that traits associated with basic survival processes have low heritability, provided that maintenance processes are appropriately represented by the model.

The results of this study suggest that mechanistic animal growth models can be useful to animal breeding through the introduction of new biological traits that are less influenced by environmental factors than phenotypic traits currently used. Potential value comes from the estimation of underlying biological trait components and the explicit description of their expression across a range of environments as predicted by the model equations.

The beef industry must become more responsive to the changing market place and consumer demands. An essential part of this is quantifying a consumer’s perception of the eating quality of beef and their willingness to pay for that quality, across a broad range of demographics. Over 19 000 consumers from Northern Ireland, Poland, Ireland and France each tasted seven beef samples and scored them for tenderness, juiciness, flavour liking and overall liking. These scores were weighted and combined to create a fifth score, termed the Meat Quality 4 score (MQ4) (0.3×tenderness, 0.1×juiciness, 0.3×flavour liking and 0.3×overall liking). They also allocated the beef samples into one of four quality grades that best described the sample; unsatisfactory, good-every-day, better-than-every-day or premium. After the completion of the tasting panel, consumers were then asked to detail, in their own currency, their willingness to pay for these four categories which was subsequently converted to a proportion relative to the good-every-day category (P-WTP). Consumers also answered a short demographic questionnaire. The four sensory scores, the MQ4 score and the P-WTP were analysed separately, as dependant variables in linear mixed effects models. The answers from the demographic questionnaire were included in the model as fixed effects. Overall, there were only small differences in consumer scores and P-WTP between demographic groups. Consumers who preferred their beef cooked medium or well-done scored beef higher, except in Poland, where the opposite trend was found. This may be because Polish consumers were more likely to prefer their beef cooked well-done, but samples were cooked medium for this group. There was a small positive relationship with the importance of beef in the diet, increasing sensory scores by about 4% in Poland and Northern Ireland. Men also scored beef about 2% higher than women for most sensory scores in most countries. In most countries, consumers were willing to pay between 150 and 200% more for premium beef, and there was a 50% penalty in value for unsatisfactory beef. After quality grade, by far the greatest influence on P-WTP was country of origin. Consumer age also had a small negative relationship with P-WTP. The results indicate that a single quality score could reliably describe the eating quality experienced by all consumers. In addition, if reliable quality information is delivered to consumers they will pay more for better quality beef, which would add value to the beef industry and encourage improvements in quality.

The developments in Norwegian sheep breeding since the early 1990s are reviewed. For the largest breeding population, the Norwegian White Sheep, results are presented for both genetic and phenotypic changes. Of the nine traits that make up the aggregate genotype, the largest gain per year, in per cent of the corresponding phenotypic average, was found for carcass grade (1.66%) and carcass weight (0.99%), number of lambs born at 1, 2 and 3 years of age (0.32% to 0.60%) and the maternal effect on weaning weight (0.26%). For fat grade, a genetic deterioration was estimated. This may be due to the too small weighting of this trait in the aggregate genotype and the true genetic parameters being somewhat different from the estimates in the prediction of breeding values. For lamb as well as ewe fleece weight, genetic change was close to zero – interpreted as mainly a correlated response to other traits in the aggregate genotype. Data for the two traits of fleece weight were, respectively, selected and few. Thus, phenotypic change was calculated for all traits except for fleece weight, and in addition for number of lambs at weaning, being indirectly selected for through number of lambs born. For all traits, with the exception of fat grade, advantageous phenotypic change was estimated. For weaning and carcass weight, the phenotypic change was less than the genetic change, while the opposite was observed for carcass and fat grade and number of lambs born. The latter traits can be more easily controlled by environmental actions, and the results thus exemplify the interdependency between environmental and genetic change.

Genetic parameters and genetic trends for growth, reproduction, milk production and composition traits were estimated for Syrian (S) and Turkish (T) Awassi sheep and their crosses maintained at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas Tal Hadya station, Aleppo, Syria (now in Terbol station in Lebanon). The data were spread over 9 years. The individual breed additive effects of T were positive and significant (P<0.05) for birth weight (BW). However, the values for weaning weight (WW) and pre-weaning weight gain (WG) were negative, even though they were significant (P<0.05). These estimates were positive and significant (P<0.05) for all reproduction and milk traits, except for litter weight at birth (LWB). The additive contributions of T were 60.72±0.94 days, 1.643±0.359 kg, 13.09±0.89 days, 16.13±0.89 kg, 1.12±0.44 kg, 0.71±0.26 kg, 2.80±0.72 kg and 0.83±0.32 kg for lambing interval (LI), litter weight at weaning (LWW), lactation length, milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, total solids yield and lactose yield, respectively. The heterosis effects, both individual and maternal, were non-significant (P>0.05) for most growth traits. Crossing of T with S, however, resulted in desirable and significant (P<0.05) individual heterosis effects for all the reproduction, milk production and constituent yields. The heritability (h²) estimates, both direct and maternal, were low for BW, WW, WG and all reproductive traits indicating major influence of environmental factors, whereas milk yield and composition had medium values. Birth weight had moderate genetic correlation with WW and WG. The genetic correlation between WW and WG was high (0.724±0.951). Lambing interval had large negative genetic correlation with LWB and LWW. However, LI had medium significant correlations with all the milk production and composition traits. Larger litter weights at birth had high and negative influence on milk yield of the dam and its constituents. Genetic changes over years for all traits were non-significant. The lack of genetic change in the studied traits calls for systematic and organized selection scheme.

In dairy cows, subjected to a G6G protocol, objectives were to determine effects of (1) extending the interval from prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) during presynchronization; and (2) adding a second PGF2α treatment before artificial insemination (AI), on ovarian response, plasma progesterone (P4) concentrations and pregnancy per AI (P/AI). In a 2×2 factorial design, lactating cows were randomly assigned to one of four timed AI (TAI) protocols: (1) G6G (n=149), one injection of PGF2α, GnRH 2 days later and a 7-day Ovsynch (GnRH, 7 days, PGF2α, 56 h, GnRH, 16 h, TAI) was initiated 6 days later; (2) G6GP (n=144), an additional PGF2α treatment (24 h after the first) during Ovsynch of the G6G protocol; (3) MG6G, one injection of PGF2α, GnRH 4 days later before initiation of the G6G protocol; and (4) MG6GP, an additional PGF2α treatment (24 h after the first) during Ovsynch of the MG6G protocol. Blood samples were collected (subset of 200 cows) at first GnRH and PGF2α of the Ovsynch, and at TAI to measure P4. Ultrasound examinations were performed in a subset of 406 cows to evaluate ovarian response at various times of Ovsynch, and in all cattle to determine pregnancy status at 32 and 60 days after TAI. Extending the interval by 2 days between PGF2α and GnRH during presynchronization increased (P<0.01) ovulatory response to first GnRH of Ovsynch, circulating P4 during Ovsynch, and P/AI at 32 and 60 days after TAI. Adding a second PGF2α treatment before AI increased the proportion of cows with luteal regression (P=0.04), improved P/AI at 60 days after TAI (P=0.05), and reduced pregnancy loss between 30 and 60 days after TAI (P=0.04). In summary, extending the interval from PGF2α to GnRH during presynchronization increased response to first GnRH of Ovsynch and P4 concentrations during Ovsynch, whereas adding a second PGF2α treatment before AI enhanced luteal regression. Both modifications of the G6G protocol improved fertility in lactating dairy cows.

In seasonal goats and sheep breeds, onset of puberty is modified by the season of birth. As adult does and bucks from subtropical Mexico display seasonal variation in their reproductive behaviour, this study was carried out to determine the effect of season of birth on puberty. Three groups of each sex born in January, May and October were used. During the seasons, does and bucks were weaned at an age of 30 days and offered ad libitum alfalfa hay and 100 g of commercial concentrate. In the female kids, the onset of ovulatory activity was determined by progesterone plasma concentrations once in a week from 3 months of age until the onset of puberty. In the male kids, the onset of puberty was individually recorded by observing the ability to mount and intromit an induced oestrous female goat aged 3 months and the presence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate obtained in an artificial vagina 1 week after the first mount. In female kids, there was an effect of the season on the date of first ovulation (P < 0.001). In the May group, ovulatory activity commenced at an earlier age (201 ± 3 days) compared with January (264 ± 5 days) and October (344 ± 5 days) groups (P < 0.001). In the January group also, the ovulatory activity commenced earlier than the October group (P < 0.001). In males, an effect of the season of birth on the first mounting was observed (P < 0.001). The male kids that were born in May (111 ± 3) and October (112 ± 5 days) attained puberty earlier than those born in January (131 ± 4 days; P < 0.001). The time of onset of puberty did not differ between groups of May and October. All males showed the presence of spermatozoa in the first ejaculate obtained 1 week after the first mount. The spermatozoa in all ejaculates were immobile. It was concluded that the season of birth modified the onset of puberty in both genders, but these modifications were more pronounced in the female than in the male kid goats.

Using deterministic methods, rates of genetic gain (Δ G) and inbreeding (Δ F) were compared between pure line selection (PLS) and combined crossbred purebred selection (CCPS), for the sire line of a three-way crossbreeding scheme. Purebred performance and crossbred performance were treated as genetically correlated traits assuming the infinitesimal model. Breeding schemes were compared at a fixed total number of purebred selection candidates, i.e. including crossbred information did not affect the size of the purebred nucleus. Selection was by truncation on estimated breeding values for crossbred performance. Rates of genetic gain were predicted using a pseudo-BLUP selection index. Rates of inbreeding were predicted using recently developed methods based on long-term genetic contributions. Results showed that changing from PLS to CCPS may increase ΔF by a factor of 2·14. In particular with high heritabilities and low purebred-crossbred genetic correlations, CCPS requires a larger number of parents than PLS, to avoid excessive ΔF. The superiority of CCPS over PLS was judged by comparing ΔG from both selection strategies at the same ΔF. At the same ΔF, CCPS was superior to PLS and the superiority of CCPS was only moderately reduced compared with the situation without a restriction on ΔF. This paper shows that the longterm genetic contribution theory can be used to balance ΔF and ΔG in animal breeding schemes within very limited computing time.

Hays varying from 58 to 75% organic matter digestibility (OMD) were offered ad libitum to steers weighing approximately 400 kg, together with concentrates at rates varying from 0·0 to 8·5 g organic matter (OM)/kg live weight per day. Total digestible OM intake (DOMI) increased linearly by 0·75 g/g concentrate OM intake (OMI) for a hay of 58% OMD, but by only 0·26 to 0·36 g/g concentrate OMI for hays above 70% OMD. With hays above 70% OMD, supplementary feeding had little effect on the overall OMD of the diet but significantly depressed the cellulose digestibility of the diet. With the hays of lower digestibility, supplementary feeding increased the OMD of the diet by an average of 0·90% units/unit concentrate OMI, and had no significant effect on the cellulose digestibility of the diet. Live-weight gain increased with increasing digestibility of the hay and with increasing level of supplement.

In multiple regression equations, variations in hay digestibility and concentrate intake accounted for from 77 to 91% of the variation in hay intake, diet digestibility and total DOM intake.

Observations were made on the distribution of ovulations between the two ovaries, the distribution of foetuses between the two uterine horns, the total numbers of cotyledonary burrs, and the weights and numbers of foetal cotyledons for each foetus in 80 Finnish Landrace × Dorset Horn ewes killed between 50 and 145 days of gestation. While ovulations were randomly distributed between right and left ovaries, viable foetuses were more evenly distributed between right and left uterine horns. Migration of embryos between the horns contributed to this relative balance but early foetal mortality, which increased with ovulation rate, tended to upset it. The mean number of foetal cotyledons per foetus depended on litter size and distribution, and at any fixed litter size was substantially reduced in those ewes with six or more ovulations. Foetal weights were also relatively low in these ewes. The total weight of cotyledons per foetus decreased by about 12% for each increase of one in number of foetuses, as compared with a 20% decrease in number of cotyledons but only a 7 to 11 % decrease in the weight of the individual foetuses. Comparisons between foetuses within the same litter led to similar trends in the ratios of cotyledon numbers, cotyledon weights and foetal weights. It is suggested that the presence of some very small lambs in large litters should not be attributed to maternal under-nutrition in late pregnancy.

The effects of feeding Cistus ladanifer (Cistus) and a blend of soybean and linseed oil (1 : 2 vol/vol) on fatty acid (FA) composition of lamb meat lipids and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of desaturase enzymes was assessed. In total, 54 male lambs were randomly assigned to 18 pens and to nine diets, resulting from the combination of three inclusion levels of Cistus (50 v. 100 v. 200 g/kg of dry matter (DM)) and three inclusion levels of oil (0 v. 40 v. 80 g/kg of DM). The forage-to-concentrate ratio of the diets was 1 : 1. Longissimus muscle lipids were extracted, fractionated into neutral (NL) and polar lipid (PL) and FA methyl esters obtained and analyzed by GLC. The expression of genes encoding Δ5, Δ6 and Δ9 desaturases (fatty acid desaturase 1 (FADS1), fatty acid desaturase 2 (FADS2) and stearoyl CoA desaturase (SCD)) was determined. Intramuscular fat, NL and PL contents were not affected by oil or Cistus. Oil supplementation reduced (P<0.05) 16:0, c9-16:1, 17:0, c9-17:1 and c9-18:1 FA and increased (P<0.05) 18:2n-6, 18:3n-3 and the majority of biohydrogenation intermediates in NL. Cistus alone had few effects on FA of NL but interacted with oil (P<0.05) by increasing t10-18:1,t10,t12-18:2,t10,c12-18:2 and t7,c9-18:2. The t10-/t11-18:1 ratio increased with both Cistus and oil levels. The c9, t11-18:2 did not increase (P<0.05) with both oil and Cistus dietary inclusion. Oil reduced c9-16:1, 17:0, c9-17:1,c9-18:1, 20:4n-6, 22:4n-6 and 20:3n-9 proportions in PL, and increased 18:2n-6, 18:3n-3, 20:3n-3 and of most of the biohydrogenation intermediates. The Cistus had only minor effects on FA composition of PL. Cistus resulted in a reduction (P<0.05) of 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 in the meat PL. The expression level of SCD mRNA increased (P=0.015) with Cistus level, although a linear relationship with condensed tannins intake (P=0.11) could not be established. FADS1 mRNA expressed levels increased linearly (P=0.019) with condensed tannins intake. In summary, the inclusion of Cistus and oil in 1 : 1 forage-to-concentrate ratio diets resulted in a large increase in t10-18:1 and no increase in c9,t11-18:2 or n-3 long chain poor in polyunsaturated fatty acids in lamb meat.

Growth rate, total body water volume (TBW), dry-matter intake (DMI) and water consumption were determined in ostriches from hatching to 350 days at which time they weighed approximately 100 kg. A Gompertz equation was used to describe the sigmoidal growth curve; mature body mass (Mmb) wascalculated as 104·1 kg from this equation. Highest average daily gain (ADG) was 455 g/day which occurred between 70 days and 98 days. Time to reach 0·5 Mmb and to grow from 0·25 to 0·75 Mmb per Mmb025 were 46·8 days and 39·7 days, respectively. Maintenance energy requirements were 1·07 MJ/kg063per day and energy requirements for kg mb increase were 0·260 MJ/kg109: thes e values were derived from a non-linear regression model. TBW as a fraction of mb declined from 0·84 in 35-day-old chicks to 0·57 in 322-day-old birds, indicating a concomitant increase in the fraction of body lipid content. Mass specific DMI decreased from 0·061 g/g mb in chicks to 0·020 g/g mb in 322 to 350 day old birds, while mass specific water influx decreased from 0·21 ml/g mb to 0·046 ml/g mb during this time. The ratio of DMI to ADG increased steadily from 1·07 to 17·1; the ratio of water consumption to DMI remained relatively constant at approximately 2·3.

Dystocia and perinatal mortality are quantitative traits that significantly impact animal productivity and welfare. Their economic importance is reflected by their inclusion in the national breeding goals of many cattle populations. The genetic architecture that influences these traits, however, has still yet to be thoroughly defined. Regions of the bovine genome associated with calving difficulty (direct and maternal) and perinatal mortality were detected in this study using a Bayesian approach with 43 204 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on up to 1970 Holstein–Friesian bulls. Several SNPs on chromosomes 5, 6, 11, 12, 17,18 and 28 were detected to be strongly associated with these calving performance traits. Novel genomic regions with previously reported associations with growth, stature, birth weight and bone morphology were identified in the present study as being associated with the three calving performance traits. Morphological abnormalities are a known contributor to perinatal mortality and the most significantly associated SNP for perinatal mortality in the present study was located in a region in linkage disequilibrium with the gene SLC26A7. This gene, SLC26A7, has similarities and colocalises with SLC4A2, which has previously been associated with osteoporosis and mortality in cattle populations. The HHIP gene that is known to be associated with stature in humans was strongly associated with direct calving difficulty in the present study; large calves are known to, on average, have a greater likelihood of dystocia. A stemloop microRNA, bta-mir-1256, on chromosome 12, involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression was associated with maternal calving difficulty. Previously reported quantitative trait loci associated with calving performance traits in other populations were again identified in this study; with one genomic region on chromosome 18 supporting very strong evidence of an underlying causative mutation and accounting for 2.1% of the genetic variation in direct calving difficulty. Overlapping genomic regions associated with one or more of the calving traits were also detected substantiating the known genetic covariances existing between these traits. Moreover, some genomic regions were only associated with one of the calving traits implying the selective genomic breeding programs exploiting these regions could help resolve genetic antagonisms.

One hundred and twenty crossbred gilts and sows were used in an experiment with three differently composed pregnancy diets in order to study the effects on performance during three reproduction cycles. Treatments during pregnancy were: (1) a standard diet; (2) 500 g sugar-beet pulp per kg diet; (3) 500 g mixture of green grass-meal, wheat bran and oat hulls per kg diet. Sows were given similar levels of estimated daily net energy (NE). All three groups were given the same standard lactation diet semi-ad libitum in two daily meals. Recordings were made of food intake during pregnancy and lactation, body weight of sows at mating, farrowing and weaning, days until first mating, litter size, and mean piglet weight at birth and weaning. Pregnancy food intake (kg) was highest in diet 3 and lowest in diet 1 (P < 0·001). Food intake was lower for sows given diet 2 than for sows given diets 1 and 3, when measured in NEfor pigs (P < 0·001). Food intake during lactation was higher for sows given diet 2, than for sows in the two other diet groups (P < 0·01). Results were consistent during all three experimental rounds. Mean body weight of sows was the same for all diet groups both at mating, farrowing and weaning. Weight gain during pregnancy and weight loss at farrowing was significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1 (P < 0·001). Litter size was not affected by the different pregnancy diets, neither total number live born nor weaned. Both mean piglet weight and total mean litter weight at birth were negatively influenced by diet 2 (P < 0·001) and (P < 0·05) respectively. This indicates that a diet with a high content of soluble dietary fibre and a large capacity to induce satiety may have a negative effect on piglet weight at birth. At weaning, however, the mean weights of piglets were the same for the three diet groups. It was concluded, that it is possible to feed pregnant sows very differently composed diets without detrimental effects on performance.

Poor maternal nutrition inhibits muscle development and postnatal muscle growth. Satellite cells are myogenic precursor cells that contribute to postnatal muscle growth, and their activity can be evaluated by the expression of several transcription factors. Paired-box (Pax)7 is expressed in quiescent and active satellite cells. MyoD is expressed in activated and proliferating satellite cells and myogenin is expressed in terminally differentiating cells. Disruption in the expression pattern or timing of expression of myogenic regulatory factors negatively affects muscle development and growth. We hypothesized that poor maternal nutrition during gestation would alter the in vitro temporal expression of MyoD and myogenin in satellite cells from offspring at birth and 3 months of age. Ewes were fed 100% or 60% of NRC requirements from day 31±1.3 of gestation. Lambs from control-fed (CON) or restricted-fed (RES) ewes were euthanized within 24 h of birth (birth; n=5) or were fed a control diet until 3 months of age (n=5). Satellite cells isolated from the semitendinosus muscle were used for gene expression analysis or cultured for 24, 48 or 72 h and immunostained for Pax7, MyoD or myogenin. Fusion index was calculated from a subset of cells allowed to differentiate. Compared with CON, temporal expression of MyoD and myogenin was altered in cultured satellite cells isolated from RES lambs at birth. The percent of cells expressing MyoD was greater in RES than CON (P=0.03) after 24 h in culture. After 48 h of culture, there was a greater percent of cells expressing myogenin in RES compared with CON (P<0.001). After 72 h of culture the percent of satellite cells expressing myogenin in RES was less than CON (P<0.01). There were no differences in the gene expression of Pax7, Myf5 or MyoD in isolated satellite cells at birth (P>0.05). In satellite cells from RES lambs at 3 months of age, the percent of cells expressing MyoD and myogenin were greater than CON after 72 h in culture (P<0.05). Fusion index was reduced in RES lambs at 3 months of age compared with CON (P<0.001). Restricted nutrition during gestation alters the temporal expression of myogenic regulatory factors in satellite cells of the offspring, which may reduce the pool of myoblasts, decrease myoblast fusion and contribute to the poor postnatal muscle growth previously observed in these animals.

Energy requirements for veal calves have not been updated recently despite the increased age at slaughter and the predominance of the Prim’Holstein breed in Europe. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of four feeding levels (FLs) on protein and fat deposition and heat production in milk-fed calves at three stages of fattening and to determine energy requirements of calves. At each stage, 16 Prim’Holstein male calves (mean body weight (BW): 73.4, 151.6 and 237.4 kg) were fed a milk replacer at 79%, 87%, 95% or 103% of a reference FL. Measurements for one stage were conducted over 4 successive weeks in two open-circuit respiration chambers and consisted of a 6-day nitrogen and energy balance followed by a fasting day for estimating fasting heat production (FHP) of the calves. Heat production (HP) measurements were analyzed using a modeling approach to partition it between HP due to physical activity (AHP), feed intake (thermic effect of feeding (TEF)) and FHP. There was no effect of FL and stage on apparent digestibility coefficients, except for a tendency for increased digestibility coefficient of fat as animals got older. The metabolizable energy (ME)/digestible energy (DE) ratio did not depend on FL but decreased (P < 0.01) as animals got older in connection with marked increases in urinary glucose and urea excretion. The AHP and TEF components of HP were not affected by stage or FL and averaged 8.4% and 7.8% of ME intake, respectively. The FHP, expressed per kg BW0.85, increased with increasing FL, suggesting that also ME requirement for maintenance (MEm) may depend on FL. For an average intake of 625 kJ ME/kg BW0.85 per day (95% of the reference FL), FHP was 298 kJ/kg BW0.85 per day. Energy retention as protein and fat increased with increasing FL resulted in higher BW gain. But the rate of increase depended on stage of growth. The slope relating protein deposition to FL was lower in the finishing phase than in the growing phase, while the slope for lipid deposition was greater. Protein and fat contents of BW gain were not affected by FL but increased as animals got older. From these results, the energy requirements of veal calves are proposed according to a new approach, which considers that MEm (expressed per kg BW0.85) depends on ME intake (kJ/kg BW0.85) according to the following relationship: MEm = 197 + 0.25 × ME intake. The corresponding marginal efficiencies of ME utilization for protein and fat deposition are then 82% and 87%, respectively.

Mature cows of nine breeds were fed (four cows per level within breed) at either 0·55, 0·71, 0·88 or 1·05 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per kg initial body weight0·75 per day during non-lactational periods for an average of 4 years. During lactation, energy allowances were increased by 0·17 MJ ME per kg body weight0·75 per day. Breeds represented four biological types: moderate genetic potential for milk yield and growth (Angus, Hereford, Red Poll), moderate milk and high growth (Charolais, Eimousin), high milk and moderate growth (Braunvieh, Pinzgauer) and high milk and growth (Gelbvieh, Simmental). The objective was to test the effects of biological type and nutritional environment on length of post-partum interval as determined from serum progesterone levels. The potential of serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) level at 3 weeks post partum for predicting the length of the post-partum interval was also evaluated. Non-parametric statistical analyses appropriate for right-censored survival data were used to test effects on post-partum interval because collection of serum was terminated prior to ovulation in some cows.

Energy availability × biological type effects on post-partum interval were significant. Increased energy availability tended to decrease post-partum interval in all biological types with high potential growth types exhibiting the greatest positive response to increased food. Post-partum interval for types with high growth potential was shorter within food level when associated with high rather than moderate potential for milk yield. Serum IGF-1 was related to post-partum interval at lower energy availability but appeared to have limited usefulness for identifying cows with extended intervals. Inherent direct and maternal production potential interact with available food resources to influence the post-partum interval of mature beef cows.

We investigated the effects of rumen-protected choline (RPC) and vitamin E (VITE) administration on milk production and status of folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin E during the periparturient period of dairy goats. Forty-eight Saanen multiparous goats were selected for the 72-day experiment, being moved to a maternity pen 30 days before expected parturition and assigned to one of the four experimental groups: control (CTR), no choline or vitamin E supplementation; choline (RPC), supplemented with 4 g/day choline chloride in rumen-protected form; vitamin E (VITE), supplemented with 200 IU/day vitamin E in rumen-protected form; and choline and vitamin E (RPCE), supplemented with 4 g/day RPC chloride and 200 IU/day vitamin E. Supplements were administered individually before the morning feed to ensure complete consumption, starting 30 days before kidding and continuing for 35 days after. During the experiment, milk yield and 4% fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield were, respectively, 210 and 350 g/day higher in RPC-supplemented goats than in non-supplemented goats. Milk fat concentration and fat yield were also increased by RPC treatment. Milk yield and composition were unaffected by vitamin E supplementation. There were no significant interactions between RPC and VITE for any of the variables measured. Plasma metabolites did not differ between treatments before and after kidding except that plasma folate at parturition was higher in RPC-supplemented goats. Neither choline nor vitamin E affected vitamin B12 plasma concentrations, while a time effect was evident after the second week of lactation, when B12 levels in each treatment group started to increase. Vitamin E administration resulted in plasma α-tocopherol levels that were 2 to 2.5 times higher than in non-supplemented goats. Overall, these results suggest that greater choline availability can improve milk production and methyl group metabolism in transition dairy goats.
