The concentrations of maternal immunoglobulin in 2-day-old lambs varied widely. They were significantly correlated with the lengths of pregnancy and the serum protein concentrations of the adult female sheep (ewes), but not with the colostrum immunoglobulin concentrations, nor with the weights or ratios of weights of the lambs and ewes. The mean concentrations were as high in Merino as in Blackface lambs.

Although there was some evidence that colostrum production was higher in ewes with twins than in ewes with single lambs, the immunoglobulin concentrations in the lambs fell significantly as litter size increased. They were significantly higher in male than in female twins, and in twins from litters containing both sexes than in twins from litters of one sex, but the difference between single males and females was not significant. Nor was the difference between the first and second born of each pair of twins. Twins and triplets born to ewes aged 7 years or more had particularly low concentrations. No other effects of the age of the ewe were found. The concentrations fell significantly as the date of lambing during the season advanced, and there were significant annual variations which could not be attributed to the weather. The correlation coefficients for the concentrations in lambs born to the same ewe in successive years were 0·309 and 0·298 (P < 0·001), respectively, for Merino and Blackface lambs.

The mean concentration in lambs which died subsequently from infections was significantly lower than in the surviving lambs, but many lambs with very low concentrations survived.

1. Three trials were conducted to investigate in cattle of different ages the digestibility of whole barley and whole oat grains in diets with approximately a 1:1 ratio of hay to concentrates. The cattle used were four 17-month-old steers in Trial 1; four non-lactating cows in Trial 2; and six heifers at 7, 10, 13 and 16 months of age in Trial 3. 2. Steers and cows completely digested the starch in the rolled cereals and the steers digested more of the starch of whole barley than the cows. The digestibility of starch in whole oats was high (0·72) and similar in both types of cattle.

3. The heifers when 7 months of age had the highest coefficients of starch digestibility for both whole barley and whole oats (0·62 and 0·83 respectively). Digestibility of starch declined with age, but this effect was masked by variations within and between animals at different ages. It is concluded that barley should be rolled before feeding but with oats the benefits from rolling are likely to be small and possibly only worth while when given to adult cattle.

The transition period is the most critical period in the lactation cycle of dairy cows. Extended lactations reduce the frequency of transition periods, the number of calves and the related labour for farmers. This study aimed to assess the impact of 2 and 4 months extended lactations on milk yield and net partial cash flow (NPCF) at herd level, and on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit of fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM), using a stochastic simulation model. The model simulated individual lactations for 100 herds of 100 cows with a baseline lactation length (BL), and for 100 herds with lactations extended by 2 or 4 months for all cows (All+2 and All+4), or for heifers only (H+2 and H+4). Baseline lactation length herds produced 887 t (SD: 13) milk/year. The NPCF, based on revenues for milk, surplus calves and culled cows, and costs for feed, artificial insemination, calving management and rearing of youngstock, was k€174 (SD: 4)/BL herd per year. Extended lactations reduced milk yield of the herd by 4.1% for All+2, 6.9% for All+4, 1.1% for H+2 and 2.2% for H+4, and reduced the NPCF per herd per year by k€7 for All+2, k€12 for All+4, k€2 for H+2 and k€4 for H+4 compared with BL herds. Extended lactations increased GHG emissions in CO2-equivalents per t FPCM by 1.0% for All+2, by 1.7% for All+4, by 0.2% for H+2 and by 0.4% for H+4, but this could be compensated by an increase in lifespan of dairy cows. Subsequently, production level and lactation persistency were increased to assess the importance of these aspects for the impact of extended lactations. The increase in production level and lactation persistency increased milk production of BL herds by 30%. Moreover, reductions in milk yield for All+2 and All+4 compared with BL herds were only 0.7% and 1.1% per year, and milk yield in H+2 and H+4 herds was similar to BL herds. The resulting NPCF was equal to BL for All+2 and All+4 and increased by k€1 for H+2 and H+4 due to lower costs for insemination and calving management. Moreover, GHG emissions per t FPCM were equal to BL herds or reduced (0% to −0.3%) when lactations were extended. We concluded that, depending on lactation persistency, extending lactations of dairy cows can have a positive or negative impact on the NPCF and GHG emissions of milk production.

From February to August 2007 the effect of rearing system (confined (C) v. free ranging (FR)) and season (spring v. summer) was evaluated on behaviour, immune and blood parameters and beef production (experiment 1). From February to August 2008, the effect of rearing system was only evaluated on beef production (experiment 2). A total of 12 Podolian young bulls were used each year. They were slaughtered at 18 and 15 months of age in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Herbage mass and pasture composition were monitored during the 2 years. Pasture availability, in terms of herbage mass and composition, as well as its seasonal development, was similar in the 2 years. In the first experiment, FR animals spent more time walking (P < 0.05), feeding (P < 0.001) and standing (P < 0.01) and showed a lower number of agonistic (P < 0.05) and non-agonistic social interaction than C animals (P < 0.01). Significant lower concentrations of serum urea nitrogen (P < 0.001) and creatinine (P < 0.10) in FR animals indicated a lower protein nutritional status due to inadequate protein availability at pasture. As a consequence, average daily gains (P < 0.05), slaughter weight (P < 0.05) and body condition score (P < 0.01) were lower in grazing animals as compared with C bulls. Cellular immune responsiveness was higher in FR animals (P < 0.05). Similarly, antibody titre to keyhole limpet hemocyanin was higher in FR bulls at the 2nd and 3rd month after antigen injection (P < 0.05), whereas it tended to be higher at the 4th month (P < 0.10). In both experiments, grazing negatively affected meat colour in terms of lightness. Eighteen-month-old bulls also showed lower final weight, weight gain and body conditions when kept outdoor: a possible consequence of nutrient deficits, as suggested by the metabolic status of FR animals. The same animals, however, benefited from FR in terms of natural behaviour expression and immune responsiveness. When the experiment was replicated the subsequent year, on animals slaughtered at 15 months of age, no differences between the performances of FR and C animals were detected. The earlier slaughter age system was also proportionally less dependent on external inputs as grazing was not extended to the dry season when herbage mass availability was lower.

Scottish Blackface sheep have been selected for either increased or decreased predicted carcass lean content at 20 weeks of age, using an index combining ultrasonic backfat depth and body weight. The index was designed to alter carcass lean content without changing body weight. After 4 years there have been large responses in the index and fat depth, the proportional difference between the divergent lines in fat depth is 0·28, but body weight and ultrasonic muscle depth have not changed between the lines. The realized heritability for the index is 0·45. Heritabilities for the index, ultrasonic fat depth, body weight and ultrasonic muscle depth, calculated using multivariate restricted maximum likelihood, are 0·47 (s.e. = 0·14), 0·39 (s.e. 0·13), 0·23 (s.e. 0·12) and 0·36 (s.e. 0·14), respectively. The selected lines will be used to investigate relationships between carcass lean content, viability and maternal performance under the harsh environmental conditions encountered in the Scottish hill environment.

The insulin-independent and combined effects of fatty acids (FA; linoleic and oleic acids) and insulin in modulating lipid accumulation and adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells was investigated using a novel protocol avoiding the effects of a complex hormone ‘induction’ mixture. 3T3-L1 cells were cultured in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) plus serum (control) or in DMEM plus either 0.3 mmol/l linoleic or oleic acids with 0.3 mmol/l FA-free bovine serum albumin in the presence or absence of insulin. Cells were cultured for 4 to 8 days and cell number, lipid accumulation, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT-4) protein expression were determined. Cell number appeared to be decreased in comparison with control cultures. In both oleic acid and linoleic acid-treated cells, notably in the absence (and presence) of insulin, oil-red O stain-positive cells showed abundant lipid. The percentage of cells showing lipid accumulation was greater in FA-treated cultures compared with control cells grown in DMEM plus serum (P < 0.001). Treatment with both linoleic and oleic acid-containing media evoked higher levels of PPAR-γ than observed in control cultures (P < 0.05). GLUT-4 protein also increased in response to treatment with both linoleic and oleic acid-containing media (P < 0.001). Lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells occurs in response to either oleic or linoleic acids independently of the presence of insulin. Both PPAR-γ and GLUT-4 protein expression were stimulated. Both proteins are considered markers of adipogenesis, and these observations suggest that these cells had entered the physiological state broadly accepted as differentiated. Furthermore, 3T3-L1 cells can be induced to accumulate lipid in a serum-free medium supplemented with FA, without the use of induction protocols using complex hormone mixtures. We have demonstrated a novel model for the study of lipid accumulation that will improve the understanding of adipogenesis in adipocyte lineage cells.

Finn-Dorset females were allowed to mate on four occasions during a period of 2 years. Those over 2 years old at the start of the experiment carried an average of three pregnancies giving birth to an average of 5·8 lambs per ewe. The proportion of ewes lambing was reduced from 93 to 32% by the occurrence of lambing 6 months previously, but litter size was unaffected either by this or by lactation at the time of mating. The mean live weight of male lambs reared as twins was 23·5 kg at 12 weeks, and 36·7 kg at slaughter (mean age 19·7 weeks, killing-out percentage 46·4%).

Neonatal lamb mortality represents both a welfare issue (due to the considerable suffering and distress) and an important production inefficiency. In lambs, approximately 80% of mortality can be attributed to the starvation–mismothering–exposure complex and occurs in the first 3 days after birth. It was the object of this review to determine the micronutrient(s) most likely to have a positive effect on neonatal lamb survival when included above the requirement for that micronutrient. Micronutrients discussed were Co, Cu, I, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn, vitamins A and E and n-3 fatty acids. For Co, Fe, Mn and Zn, there was no evidence of positive responses to supplementation. Cu and I had toxicity thresholds that were sufficiently close to requirement that supplementing above requirement presented a risk of inducing toxicity. In the case of vitamin A, while serum concentrations indicated that sub-optimal status did exist, long-term buffering from liver stores (from grazing) makes experimentation difficult and practical benefits to supplementation unlikely. Therefore, the most likely candidates for supplementation were Se, vitamin E and fatty acids. Fatty acid supplementation with fish oils or docosahexaenoic acid-containing algal biomass consistently improved lamb vigour but it is unlikely that supplementation will be economic. Positive responses to Se supplementation throughout gestation were recorded. However, in many studies the Se status of control ewes was marginal and there is a need for more studies where control ewes are clearly adequate in Se. Positive responses to vitamin E supplementation above requirement in the last-third of gestation were observed but the optimum dietary inclusion of vitamin E and period of feeding during pregnancy still require clarification.

A total of 315 first parity sows were used in two experiments to establish the lactational and subsequent reproductive performance of first-litter sows in response to varying levels of dietary amino acids and digestible energy (DE) offered during lactation. In the first experiment, sows were offered five diets ranging in lysine content from 6·2 to 15·1 g/kg. In the second experiment sows were offered five diets with a similar lysine: DE ratio (0·88 to 0·85 g/MJ) but ranging in DE content from 12·6 to 15·1 MJ/kg. Voluntary food intake during lactation was unaffected by lysine or DE content of the diets. Piglet pre-weaning growth was similarly unaffected by dietary DE content but responded in a curvilinear manner with increasing dietary lysine. Sow body-weight loss during lactation was unaffected by dietary lysine but declined with increasing DE content up to 13·8 MJ/kg. Backfat loss was lowest for sows offered the lowest lysine diet and tended to reach a plateau at a dietary level of 10·6 g lysine per kg. In response to dietary DE content, backfat loss tended to be highest for sows offered the diet of lowest DE content and declined with increasing DE content up to 15·1 MJ DE per kg. The subsequent weaning to remating interval was unaffected by dietary DE content. Subsequent litter size was similarly unaffected by dietary DE content but was significantly higher for sows offered the two higher, compared with the two lower, lysine diets (10·7 v. 9·6 born alive, s.e.d. 0·5, P < 0·05). The results suggest that current amino acid recommendations for lactating first-litter sows are inappropriate and may be constraining both milk production and subsequent reproductive performance.

Genetic and phenotypic variation in post-weaning growth, food intake, efficiency and body composition of mice post weaning and at maturity, were examined to determine whether genetic variation in efficiency exists and to predict likely responses to selection for increased food efficiency in post-weaning animals. Genetic variation was found for average daily gain, mid-weight, daily food intake and proportion of body fat both post weaning and at maturity. Residual food intake calculated from phenotypic regression had a heritability of 0·27 (s.e. 0·06) post weaning and 0·24 (s.e. 0·08) at maturity, and was very similar to residual food intake calculated using genetic (co)variances, indicating genetic variation in efficiency exists in post-weaning and mature mice. Although the phenotypic correlation between residual food intake post weaning and at maturity was low (0·29), the genetic correlation was moderate (0·60). This suggests that selection for efficiency in young animals will lead to a correlated improvement in maintenance efficiency of mature animals. Genetic correlation estimates suggest that correlated responses in other traits would include a concomitant decrease in post-weaning food intake, a slight increase in weight at weaning, a slight increase in post-weaning fat proportion and little or no change in post-weaning growth. In mature animals there will be an associated decrease in daily food intake and a slight decrease in mature size and body fat proportion. The results suggest that residual food intake of young animals might be a suitable selection criteria for use in livestock species to improve efficiency in young animals and also in the breeding herd.

Data on incidence and severity of infection with bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis and proportion of eye margin pigmentation were collected over 3 years in a mixed herd of Hereford × Shorthorn (HS), Africander x HS, Brahman x HS, grade Africanders and purebred Brahmans. Both sexes were scored at 3 and 8 mo but only females were scored at 15 mo. At all ages, the incidence of infection was greatest in the HS and lowest in the Brahmans in which no infections were recorded. The severity of infection and proportion of bilateral infections were also greatest in the HS animals.

Infected animals were lighter at all ages than comparable uninfected animals. HS females which showed signs of infection at each age were 22·8 kg lighter at 15 mo than those which had never shown signs of being infected. The magnitude of the weight difference was directly related to the severity of infection.

In the HS breed, both the incidence and severity of infection were related to the proportion of eye margin pigmentation. At 15 mo, 68% of HS females with full eye margin pigmentation were infected compared to 96% of comparable unpigmented animals. At 15 mo infected HS females with full eye margin pigmentation were heavier than unpigmented contemporaries. It was concluded that the lower weight of infected animals was primarily the result of the disease rather than vice versa.

Reproductive traits have a major influence on the economic effectiveness of horse breeding. However, there is little information available. We evaluated the use of reproductive traits as selection criteria in official breeding programs to increase the reproductive efficiency of breeding studs, analysing 696 690 records from the pedigree data of eight Spanish horse populations, with different breeding purposes. The reproductive parameters studied in both sexes were age at first foaling (AFF), age at last foaling, average reproductive life and generational interval. In the females, the average interval between foaling (AIF) and interval between first and second foaling were also studied. There were clear differences between sexes and breeds, which may be due to management practices, breeding purposes and the status of the populations, rather than to differences in actual physiological conditions. Riding mares were the most precocious (AFF, 1937.64 to 2255.69 days) and had a more intensive reproductive use (AIF, 625.83 to 760.07 days), whereas sires used for meat production were the most precocious males (AFF, 1789.93 to 1999.75 days), although they had a shorter reproductive life (1564.34 to 1797.32 days). Heritabilities (0.02 to 0.42 in females and 0.04 to 0.28 in males) evidenced the genetic component of the reproductive traits, with Sport Horses having the higher average values. These results support the selection by AFF to improve reproductive aspects because of its medium–high heritability and its positive correlations with other important reproductive traits. The inclusion of the AIF is also recommended in sport populations, because this determines the length of the breaks between foaling and conditions the reproductive performance of the dams, as well as their selective intensity, genetic gain and genetic improvement. It is therefore an important economic parameter in breeding studs.

The abundance and cross-linking of intramuscular connective tissue contributes to the background toughness of meat, and is thus undesirable. Connective tissue is mainly synthesized by intramuscular fibroblasts. Myocytes, adipocytes and fibroblasts are derived from a common pool of progenitor cells during the early embryonic development. It appears that multipotent mesenchymal stem cells first diverge into either myogenic or non-myogenic lineages; non-myogenic mesenchymal progenitors then develop into the stromal-vascular fraction of skeletal muscle wherein adipocytes, fibroblasts and derived mesenchymal progenitors reside. Because non-myogenic mesenchymal progenitors mainly undergo adipogenic or fibrogenic differentiation during muscle development, strengthening progenitor proliferation enhances the potential for both intramuscular adipogenesis and fibrogenesis, leading to the elevation of both marbling and connective tissue content in the resulting meat product. Furthermore, given the bipotent developmental potential of progenitor cells, enhancing their conversion to adipogenesis reduces fibrogenesis, which likely results in the overall improvement of marbling (more intramuscular adipocytes) and tenderness (less connective tissue) of meat. Fibrogenesis is mainly regulated by the transforming growth factor (TGF) β signaling pathway and its regulatory cascade. In addition, extracellular matrix, a part of the intramuscular connective tissue, provides a niche environment for regulating myogenic differentiation of satellite cells and muscle growth. Despite rapid progress, many questions remain in the role of extracellular matrix on muscle development, and factors determining the early differentiation of myogenic, adipogenic and fibrogenic cells, which warrant further studies.

The composition and degradability of four varieties of rice straw were examined. The varieties were tall or short and early or late maturing. The straws and their botanical parts (leaf blade plus leaf sheath, internode, node and chaff) varied in acid-detergent fibre, ash and silica contents, but not in nitrogen and neutral-detergent fibre. There were some trends but no significant difference in proportions of parts between varieties. Milled samples of whole straw and its parts were either untreated, treated with a cellulase preparation plus propionic acid, treated with ammonia, or treated with cellulase then ammonia. Rumen degradability was measured by incubating the samples in polyester bags suspended in the rumen of sheep. The soluble fraction and potential degradability were greater in untreated short and early than in tall and late varieties, but rates of degradation did not vary significantly. Internode was more degradable than leaf. Cellulase and/or ammonia treatments increased the soluble fraction, especially in tall and late varieties, and increased potential degradabiiity except in internode. Degradability correlated positively with ash and silica contents.

The origin of duodenal purine bases (PB) was studied in a digestion experiment with four heifers, cannulated in the rumen and duodenum, which received a basal concentrate (152 g crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM)) together with barley straw (85: 15 fresh weight basis) or the same concentrate supplemented with soya-bean meal, carbohydrate-treated soya-bean meal, maize gluten meal or fish meal to increase its protein content to 192 g/kg DM. Tr eatments were assigned to the four animals in five experimental periods according to an incomplete Latin-square design. Each 30-day period included 20 days of change-over adaptation and 10 days of experimental measurements. The flow of digesta entering the duodenum was estimated using Yb and acid-detergent insoluble ash as indigestible markers according to a double-marker system and microbial nitrogen (N) and PB were labelled with 15N infused into the rumen. The proportion of duodenal PB of microbial origin estimated from 15N enrichment of PB-N averaged 0·66 (s.e. 0·029) and did not differ between treatments nor when protozoa or bacteria associated with liquid (LAB) and solid (SAB) fractions were used as a reference sample. On average microbial contribution to duodenal non-ammonia N was higher when estimated from the PB/N ratio than from 15N (0·67 v. 0·55 (s.e. 0·015)) although differences were small and not significant when LAB was the reference sample (0·58 v. 0·52 (s.e. 0·018)) reflecting the higher PB/N ratio of this fraction compared with SAB and protozoa (2·04 v. 1·65 and 1·60 (s.e. 0·04) mmol/g). Considering only the duodenal PB of microbial origin resulted in estimates of microbial N synthesis from the PB/N ratio of SAB similar to those derived from 15N enrichment of both bacterial fractions (12·9 v. 13·5 and 13·3 (s.e. 0·83) g/kg of organic matter apparently digested in the rumen OMADR)) but underestimated the values derived from LAB (9·9 g/kg OMADR). Regardless of the estimation method, neither the duodenal flow of microbial N nor the efficiency of microbial synthesis differed between treatments. These results suggest that a significant proportion of duodenal PB have a non-microbial origin which may lead to overestimation of microbial yield when PB are used as a marker. Differences in PB/N ratio between microbial fractions is another important factor to be considered.

The aim of this paper was to identify pre-slaughter factors that modify total and insoluble collagen contents in bovine muscle to construct a model of collagen dynamics. The meta-analyses were performed with primary data of total (n = 1165) and insoluble (n = 1145) collagen contents from INRA experiments obtained from different muscles in young bulls, cows and steers. According to both the bibliography and meta-analyses, total collagen content and solubility were greatly affected by the muscle (type). Moreover, the pattern of the evolution of collagen characteristics was similar among Longissimus, Semitendinosus and Triceps brachii muscles in young bulls. In cows, collagen contents in the Triceps brachii muscle had delayed dynamics compared with the other muscles. Collagen characteristics differed among breeds because of variation in the maturity of the breed. Similarly, according to the meta-analyses, total and insoluble collagen content evolutions with the degree of maturity (DOM; proportion of adult weight reached at slaughter) were different in dairy and rustic breeds from those of beef breeds, especially in bulls. Although the relationships between collagen content and DOM were quantified in different muscles and sexes, the precision of the fitted equations was not sufficient for prediction. Consequently, relying on the hypotheses raised by the meta-analysis and the literature, an approach to further develop a dynamic mechanistic model of soluble and insoluble collagen content is proposed.

One hundred and thirteen high genetic merit Holstein-Friesian heifers were used in a study to determine the effect of rearing regime, in terms of diet offered and target calving weight, on body size, reproductive performance and milk production in high genetic merit heifers. Eighty of the heifers were supplied from 11 commercial farms, the remainder were supplied from the herd at the Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland. The heifers commenced the experiment at 7 weeks of age when they were allocated on the basis of source, live weight and genetic merit to one of four rearing regimes. The target weights at calving were 540 kg (treatment 1) and 620 kg (treatments 2, 3 and 4). Treatment 1 heifers were offered grass silage-based diets during the winter and grass-based diets during the summer. Treatment 2 heifers were offered the same forage base plus additional concentrate supplementation. Treatment 3 heifers were offered a straw/concentrate diet during the winter and grass-based diets during the summer. Treatment 4 heifers received the same diets as treatment 3, except for the first summer period when they remained housed and were offered a straw/concentrate diet. The heifers were mated at 14 months of age and were returned to the 11 source farms one month prior to calving. Heifers reared on treatment 1 had a lower withers height (P < 0·001) and were of a lower condition score (P < 0·001) before calving than heifers reared on treatments 2, 3 and 4. During early lactation (3 months post calving) heifers reared on treatment 1 lost less weight and condition score than the heifers reared on the other treatments. Thus at the end of the first lactation live weights did not differ significantly between the treatments. However, body length remained shorter (P < 0·01) in treatment 1 compared with treatments 2, 3 and 4. First lactation milk yield (305 days) was lower for heifers reared on treatment 1 (7222 l) compared with heifers reared on treatment 2 (8020 l) (P < 0·01), 3 (7956 l) (P < 0·01) and 4 (7901 l) (P < 0·05). Similarly, milk fat plus protein yield was lower (P < 0·05) for heifers reared on treatment 1 (511 kg) compared with treatments 2 (544 kg), 3 (544 kg) and 4 (554 kg). The interval from calving to first recorded oestrus was shorter in treatment 1 compared with treatments 2 and 3 (P < 0·05). There was a tendency (P < 0·10) for heifers reared on treatment 1 to have a shorter calving interval (394 days) compared with treatments 2 (426 days), 3 (435 days) and 4 (458 days). In conclusion increasing the live weight of Holstein-Friesian heifers at first calving from 540 to 620 kg pre-calving increased milk yield proportionally by 0·11 but tended to increase the calving interval. Diet type during the rearing period had no effect on milk fat plus protein yield or reproductive performance.

Following a pilot study, the aim of this study was to test the hypothesis whether occurrence of massaging the anogenital region of a calf by a non-maternal hind is a reliable indicator of adoption. The investigation was conducted between 28 May (1st day of calving) and 2 September (abrupt weaning of all calves) on a red deer farm at Vimperk, Czech Republic. Fifty hinds and their calves were observed but only complete data sets of sucking bouts were considered for evaluation. Massaging occurred mostly during the 1st month of the calf’s life. All filial calves were massaged repeatedly. Other calves received ano-genital massage at least twice (termed adopted), on a single occasion or not at all (termed non-filial). Filial and adopted calves behaved in a similar way but differently from non-filial calves. They sucked in an antiparallel standing position so that the hind could lick their ano-genital region more often than the non-filial calves. This occurred even when two calves were involved in the bout. When two calves were involved in the sucking bout, non-filial calves sucked from behind, between the hind’s hind legs. This position occurred more frequently with non-filial than among the filial and adopted calves. It was therefore concluded, that repeated allonursing accompanied with massaging of the ano-genital region of the sucking calf by the hind can be considered a signal of adoption. Hinds usually adopted calves older than their own progeny. The adopted calves were on average 2·5 days old. This suggests that it is most likely the calf’s activity which leads to bonding. No reciprocity was found in allosucking and/or allonursing. The fact that non-filial calves commonly initiated allosucking from a non-maternal hind during the day when she gave birth appeared crucial for establishing bonding which subsequently led to adoption. Hinds may be bonded with several calves including their own. Therefore, bonding with a non-filial calf did not principally mean failure in looking after their own progeny as shown in other studies.

Two selection indexes, one intended for lamb producers and finishers and one for store lamb producers, were derived using genetic parameters for carcass and maternal characteristics from Conington et al. (2001) and economic values from Conington et al. (2004). This paper summarizes responses to selection for lamb traits only, after 5 years of selection (1998 to 2003) on two farms using these selection indexes. The index for lamb producers and finishers, evaluated on farm 1, with a flock size of 680 ewes, includes economic weightings for maternal traits as well as carcass weight, fat and conformation grades, whereas the index for store lamb producers, evaluated on farm 2, with a flock size of 580 ewes, only includes economic values for maternal traits and lamb growth to weaning. Three selection lines of Scottish Blackface sheep per farm were created with the first lambs born to each line in 1999. These lines were selection (S), control (C) and industry (I); they were of equal size on each farm. Five top- and five average-performing ram lambs were selected each year for the S and C lines respectively using a multi-trait best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) implementation of the indexes. The I-line used four mature rams bought from industry, selected on appearance only, i.e. adherence to breed ‘type’. Results showed that 5 years after the implementation of the index, the S line had significantly higher index scores than the C or I lines on both farms. The means (s.d.) for the average index scores in 2003 are 114 (328), 119 (371) and 451 (328) (farm 1), and −8 (146), −11 (130), and 250 (129) (farm 2) for the C, I and S lines, respectively, giving predicted net differences (S-C) of £3·38 (farm 1) and £2·58 (farm 2) per ewe. Phenotypic responses showed significant S v. C differences in weaning weight on both farms. As predicted from previous analyses, no changes in carcass quality traits were seen at farm 1 although S-line carcass weights tended to be heavier than those from the C or I lines. The results show that genetic improvement using multi-trait selection indices has been successful and it is a viable, long-term strategy to improve levels of production for hill sheep in extensive environments.

The effects of reducing the feed intake of 12 winter-calving (Hereford male × British Friesian female) cows to the maintenance level for 6 weeks from week 10 of lactation were investigated during two consecutive lactation periods. Initially, six cows were in their first and six in their third lactation. In each year the period of ‘underfeeding’ was preceded by a period of ‘adequate feeding’ (maintenance plus milk production requirements) and succeeded by a period of ‘refeeding’ (2 × maintenance). Changes in body water, estimated by the dilution of tritiated water and deuterium oxide at the end of each feeding period, were used to calculate changes in body tissue. Milk yield during the period of ‘adequate feeding’ indicated that individual cows differed markedly in milk production potential. During ‘underfeeding’ milk yield was related to lactation potential. Cows of higher potential tended to maintain higher yields than those of lower potential but in doing so they incurred higher body-weight losses. The ‘refeeding’ period did not result in significant increases in milk yield. The weight losses during ‘underfeeding’ consisted mainly of fat but some cows apparently mobilized relatively large amounts of protein. More fat per unit body weight loss was mobilized by the heifers than by the cows, which, on the other hand appeared to mobilize relatively more protein. On ‘refeeding’, only a few cows were able to achieve complete tissue repletion.
