The aim of this study was to compare rumen pH and time-budget in eight mid-lactation goats receiving two diets in a cross-over design (low-concentrate diet (L): 30% and high-concentrate diet (H): 60% concentrate). Feeding H increased daily intake (4.3 ± 0.08% v. 4.7 ± 0.08% of body weight for L and H, respectively) and daily milk production (3.01 ± 0.130 v. 3.50 ± 0.130 kg/day of 3.5% fat-corrected milk for L and H, respectively). It decreased milk fat and inverted the fat-to-protein ratio (1.07 ± 0.054 v. 0.94 ± 0.054 for L and H, respectively). As suggested by the percentage of time spent with rumen pH below 6.0 (23.4 ± 6.60% v. 39.9 ± 5.88% for L and H, respectively), H was more acidogenic than L. When offered H instead of L, goats spent less time eating (298 ± 17.5 v. 265 ± 17.5 min for L and H, respectively) and ruminating (521 ± 21.0 v. 421 ± 21.0 min for L and H, respectively) but more time resting (352 ± 27.1 v. 459 ± 21.1 min for L and H, respectively) over a 24-h period. They also tended to spend more time drinking (20 ± 2.9 v. 25 ± 2.9 min for L and H, respectively; P = 0.08) when offered H rather than L. These differences in activities were mainly observed during the first hours following feeding. When offered H, goats adapted their feeding behaviour around the feedings, which allowed them to limit the physiological disturbances potentially inducible by H and to increase milk production, without experiencing too much acidosis.

An experiment was devised to examine the effect of animal age at slaughter, within genotype and finishing system, on bull beef eating quality characteristics to assess the 15 month age limit imposed for bulls at slaughter by the Meat and Livestock Commission specification for improved beef eating quality. The experiment was a factorial design using bulls of two crossbred genotypes (Aberdeen Angus × and Charolais ×), offered two diets (silage-based and barley-based) and slaughtered at two abattoirs. Bulls were slaughtered from approximately 10 months of age on seven dates (ages) at 6-week intervals. Bulls given barley were slaughtered on date numbers 1 to 5 (43 to 67 weeks of age) and bulls given silage on date numbers 2 to 7 (49 to 79 weeks of age). On each slaughter date and at each abattoir the first four commercial steers which followed the bulls on the slaughterline and met the United Kingdom (UK) modal carcass specification R 4L were selected as abattoir, slaughter date and industry representative controls. At 48 h post mortem samples of m. longissimus lumborum; m. biceps femoris; and m. semimembranosus were recovered from all bull and steer carcasses, vacuum packed and stored at 2°C for a fiirther 12 days before freezing and subsequent assessment by a 12 member taste panel and texture analysis using a Warner Bratzler shear jig.

Bulls achieved high growth rates during the finishing period averaging 1·22, 1·55, 1·41 and 1·98 kg/day for silage-fed Angus × bulls; barley-fed Angus × bulls; silage-fed Charolais × bulls; and barley-fed Charolais × bulls, respectively (s.e.d. = 0·08; P < 0·05). Age at slaughter had no significant effect on beef tenderness from young bulls in this study. Similarly, no significant differences in beef tenderness either between genotypes or diets were detected. Bulls, however, produced meat which had lower mechanical shear force values (10·2 v. 11·9 kg for m. biceps femoris; P < 0·001) and was considered to be more tender (P < 0·001), less flavoursome (F < 0·001) and more acceptable (P < 0·01) than that produced by steers.

It was concluded that beef aged for 14 days post mortem and recovered from young bulls which have achieved high growth rates can be at least as good as that representative of the UK standard product. The 15-month age limit for bulls ensures that commercially produced bulls achieve high lifetime growth rates and will produce beef of a quality comparable with that achieved in this study.

Large White and Duroc semen was used to form a three-breed cross from Large White x Norwegian Landrace dams. A pair of sibs from each litter was fed ad libitum and a further pair on a time-based scale at the Meat and Livestock Commission testing station at Stirling, Scotland. A total of 241 litters was tested. At the end of testing the pigs were slaughtered and standard carcass measurements were made. One side of the carcass of each of a sample of 60 pigs was fully dissected. The Duroc progeny grew faster and had better food conversion efficiency than the Large White progeny when fed ad libitum but there was no difference between the breeds when feeding was restricted. The Large White progeny produced a better trimming yield and were slightly longer. There was no significant difference in fat depths. The proportions of lean, fat and bone tissues did not differ greatly between the breeds although the Large White progeny had slightly more lean tissue and the Duroc progeny were more heavily boned and had more intermuscular fat. The Duroc terminal sires gave an economic advantage of £1·70 per pig when fed ad libitum but a loss of £0·35 when fed to a restricted scale. This was primarily due to the superior growth rate and food conversion efficiency of the Duroc progeny when fed ad libitum.

Dairy herd size is expected to increase in many European countries, given the recent policy changes within the European Union. Managing more cows may have implications for herd performance in the post-quota era. The objective of this study was to characterise spring-calving herds according to size and rate of expansion, and to determine trends in breeding policy, reproduction and production performance, which will inform industry of the likely implications of herd expansion. Performance data from milk recording herds comprising 775 795 lactations from 2555 herds for the years 2004 to 2008 inclusive were available from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. Herds were classified into Small (average of 37 cows), Medium (average of 54 cows) and Large (average of 87 cows) and separately into herds that were not expanding (Nil expansion), herds expanding on average by three cows per year (Slow expansion) and herds expanding on average by eight cows per year (Rapid expansion). There was no association between rate of expansion and 305-day fat and protein yield. However, 305-day milk yield decreased and milk protein and fat percentage increased with increasing rate of expansion. There were no associations between herd size and milk production except for protein and fat percentage, which increased with increasing herd size. Average parity number of the cows decreased as rate of expansion increased and tended to decrease as herd size increased. In rapidly expanding herds, cow numbers were increased by purchasing more cattle. The proportion of dairy sires relative to beef sires used in the breeding programme of expanding herds increased and there was more dairy crossbreeding, albeit at a low rate. Similarly, large herds were using more dairy sires and fewer beef sires. Expanding herds and large herds had superior reproductive performance relative to non-expanding and small herds. Animals in expanding herds calved for the first time at a younger age, had a shorter calving interval and were submitted for breeding by artificial insemination at a higher rate. The results give confidence to dairy producers likely to undergo significant expansion post-quota such that, despite managing more cows, production and reproductive performance need not decline. The management skills required to achieve these performance levels need investigation.

This study aimed to assess the interaction between different dietary vitamin A (dVitA) levels and the same concentration of vitamin E (100 IU all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate/kg feed) in growing-finishing pigs. In the first experiment, two fat sources × two dVitA levels (0 v. 100 000 IU) were used. The supplementation of 100 000 IU dVitA induced a range of 5.13 to 30.03 μg retinol/g liver, 62.78 to 426.88 μg retinol palmitate/g liver, and 0.60 to 1.96 μg retinol/g fat. Dietary fat did not affect retinol or retinyl palmitate deposition in pigs. The high concentration of dVitA produced lower fat and liver α-tocopherol concentrations, and increased susceptibility of muscle tissue to oxidation. A second experiment was carried out to study the retinol and α-tocopherol retention at different withdrawal times prior to slaughter (two dVitA levels; 0 v. 100 000 IU). A high dose of 100 000 IU vitamin A during a short 2-week period was enough to induce α-tocopherol depletion in liver and fat to a similar extent as when 100 000 IU were administered during the whole fattening. Muscle, fat and liver α-tocopherol concentrations were not affected by dVitA in the 1300–13 000 IU/kg range, but liver α-tocopherol concentration was higher when vitamin A was removed from the vitamin mix 5 weeks prior to slaughter (experiment 3).

1. The primary growth and first regrowth of perennial ryegrass were preserved either without additive (NA), or with a mixture consisting of equal volumes of formic acid and formalin at 10·0 and 13·01/t fresh crop for primary growth and regrowth herbage respectively (35 g formaldehyde per kg crude protein) (FF). The silages were given ad libitum to 40 lactating British Friesian heifers and cows, with a supplement of either pelleted ground maize (104 g crude protein per kg dry matter) (LP) or pelleted ground maize and soya bean meal (254 g crude protein per kg dry matter) (HP), at 6·1 and 7·1 kg per head per day for heifers and cows respectively. The primary growth silage was given from weeks 4 to 14 and the regrowth from weeks 15 to 22 of lactation. The silages were supplemented with urea so that the dietary supply of rumen degradable protein exceeded 7·8g/MJ metabolizable energy.

2. Silage FF had lower concentrations of both fermentation acids and ammonia-nitrogen than silage NA. The digestibility of the dry matter, energy and crude protein of the diet containing silage FF was significantly less than that of diets containing silage NA when cows were given primary growth material (P < 0·001). But silage treatment had no significant effect on the digestibility of cellulose. When cows were given regrowth silage, silage treatment had no significant effect on the digestibility of dry matter, energy and cellulose, but formic acid/formaldehyde reduced the digestibility of crude protein (P < 0·01). The inclusion of soya bean meal in the supplement significantly increased the digestibility of crude protein, dry matter and energy, but when cows were given the primary growth silage the effect on the digestibility of dry matter and energy was only apparent with silage NA.

3. Cows and heifers given silage FF from primary growth consumed 160g/kg more dry matter than those given silage NA (P < 0·01). This effect was not apparent when the animals were given regrowth silage. The effect of formic acid/formaldehyde on the intake of digestible energy was not significant in either period on the trial, but the inclusion of soya bean meal in the pellet significantly increased the intake of digestible energy (P < 0·01).

4. Cows and heifers given silage FF from primary growth produced 90g/kg more milk and 50g/kg more solids-corrected milk than those given silage NA, but the differences were not significant and these trends were not apparent when regrowth silage was given. An increase in the crude protein content of supplement increased the milk (P < 0·01) and protein yield (P < 0·05) of cows, but not heifers, when they were given primary growth silage. The effect was less when milk output was expressed in terms of solids-corrected milk since milk fat content tended to fall when cows were given the HP supplement. Treatments had no significant effect on live-weight change.

5. It is suggested that the increases in milk output were mediated via changes in the supply of energy rather than of protein.

Embryo transfer studies have demonstrated that high plane feeding in early pregnancy is detrimental to the successful establishment of pregnancy in adolescent but not mature ewes. To further examine this relationship with ewes that conceive naturally and to investigate its effects on foetal development, 102 Greyface and Texel×Greyface ewes (body condition score (BCS) 3·8) and 114 Texel×Greyface adolescent ewes (BCS 3·3) were allocated to one of three treatments following a synchronized mating. From day 1 to 31 of pregnancy, animals were offered grass nuts (10·2 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per kg dry matter (DM); 163 g crude protein per kg DM) at one of three levels to supply approximately 2·0 (H); 1·0 (M) and 0·6 (L) of their predicted ME requirements for maintenance. Increasing the post-mating plane of nutrition resulted in significant increases in ewe live weight (P<0·001) and BCS (P<0·001) during the treatment period. When diets were standardized for all animals during mid pregnancy (days 31 to 105), L ewes gained more live weight (P<0·05) and BCS (P<0·001) than H ewes. Early pregnancy nutrition had no effect on the conception rate of mature ewes; however adolescent ewes on the H and M treatments had lower conception rates (P<0·05) than those offered the L diet (0·59, 0·61 and 0·82 respectively). As a result, L adolescent ewes tended to have a higher mean total lamb birth weight per ewe mated (P=0·09) although lamb output at weaning was not influenced by plane of nutrition. Lambs born from adolescent mothers had lower lamb birth weights (P<0·001) and a shorter mean head length, crown-rump length and thoracic girth (P<0·001). Foetuses from H ewes had longer hind legs than those from L ewes on day 83 of gestation (P<0·05) and at term (P<0·05). The results of this study suggest that allowing adolescent but not mature ewes to lose live weight and body condition can increase the proportion of productive ewes following a natural service.

Six dry cows, six in-calf heifers and six yearling calves grazed in groups of six, arranged either in single age groups or mixed age groups; the arrangements alternated, and each was repeated three times in a continuous grazing sequence with six-day periods. All the animals grazed together for a preliminary period of seven days. Under each arrangement the cattle grazed on a mature sward for two periods, and on an aftermath for one period. Access to fresh and grazed herbage was restricted by electric fences which were moved daily, but the amount of fresh herbage offered was well in excess of appetite at all times.

Records of live-weight, herbage intake, grazing behaviour and social dominance ranking were obtained for all individuals. There was a close relationship between live-weight (LW) and herbage organic matter intake (OMI) in each grazing period, and the regression equations for the six periods were very similar. The best-fit exponent of LW for the pooled results was 0·61±0·038; this was significantly different from 0·73 and 1·0. The exponent increased to 0·71±0·045 when the cow data were excluded. The inclusion of weight change as a third variable was only of value in the mature sward.

The calves ate significantly more, and the cows tended to eat more, when grazing in mixed age groups. These differences could not be explained by differences in the time spent grazing.

There were high simple correlations between LW and OMI, between social dominance rank and OMI, and between LW and rank, particularly in the mixed age groups. When variations in LW were excluded, dominance rank had little influence on OMI in the mixed age groups, but the independent effects of LW and social rank on OMI were of approximately equal importance in the single age groups.

Sixteen blocks of eight littermate pigs were weaned at 3 weeks of age and each divided into four groups. Various levels of nutrition were applied to the pigs so that the four groups reached 20 kg. at 59, 68, 80 and 91 days of age, respectively.

Only small differences were observed between groups in feed conversion ratio to 20 kg.; however, Group 4 required more feed per kg. gain than the three other groups.

During the second period (20–90 kg.) the pigs in each group were divided into two sub-groups, which were on a high and a low plane of nutrition respectively. In both sub-groups the type of feeding before 20 kg. influenced the average daily gain and feed conversion ratio. The older the pigs were at 20 kg. the higher the daily gain and the lower the feed conversion ratio in the following period. There was an increase in daily feed intake with increased age at 20 kg. for pigs fed ad lib. during the second period.

An increase in age at 20 kg. caused a significant decrease in thickness of backfat, a greater area of eye muscle and a smaller area of fat overlying muscle. For pigs fed ad lib. the area of eye muscle was significantly increased by a higher age at 20 kg. live-weight.

Livestock breed-related public good functions are often used to justify support for endangered breed conservation despite the fact that little is known about such non-market values. We show how stated preference techniques can be used to assess the non-market values that people place on livestock breeds. Through the application of a case study choice experiment survey in Zamora province, Spain, the total economic value (TEV) of the threatened Alistana–Sanabresa (AS) cattle breed was investigated. An analysis of the relative importance of the non-market components of its TEV and an assessment of the socio-economic variables that influence people’s valuation of such components is used to inform conservation strategy design. Overall, the findings reveal that the AS breed had significant non-market values associated with it and that the value that respondents placed on each specific public good function also varied significantly. Functions related with indirect use cultural and existence values were much more highly valued than landscape maintenance values. These high cultural and existence values (totalling over 80% of TEV) suggest that an AS in situ conservation strategy will be required to secure such values. As part of such a strategy, incentive mechanisms will be needed to permit farmers to capture some of these public good values and thus be able to afford to maintain breed population numbers at socially desirable levels. One such mechanism could be related to the development of breed-related agritourism initiatives, with a view to enhancing private good values and providing an important addition to continued direct support. Where linked with cultural dimensions, niche product market development, including through improving AS breed-related product quality and brand recognition may also have a role to play as part of such an overall conservation and use strategy. We conclude that livestock breed conservation strategies with the highest potential to maximise societal welfare would be those that secure the breed-related functions that people value most, with appropriate in situ conservation interventions and strategies being identified accordingly.

The experiment consisted of a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design testing the two D+ and D− chicken lines selected for divergent digestion efficiency (fifth selection generation), xylanase (with or without) and ampicillin and collistin (with or without) supplementations. From 8 to 22 days, 144 chickens (18 birds per treatment) were fed a diet containing 55% wheat from a high-viscosity cultivar (Rialto). Effects of treatments were evaluated on individual growth performance (8 to 19 days), digestibilities of lipids and dry matter, dietary energy value (apparent metabolisable energy corrected to zero-nitrogen retention (AMEn)), digestive organ and breast sizes, and intestinal bile acids at 3 weeks of age. Individual variabilities were much lower in D+ than in D− birds for feed : gain ratios, digestibilities and AMEn values. In all cases, feed : gain ratios were lower in the D+ than in the D− line (P < 0.001), and D+ birds showed 22% to 86% higher values than in D− birds (P < 0.001) for digestibilities and AMEn. In D− birds, antibiotics but not xylanase supplementation had significant effects on lipid digestibility (P < 0.01) and AMEn (P < 0.05), whereas both supplements improved these parameters in D+ birds (P < 0.001 for both additives on lipids digestibility, P < 0.05 for xylanase and P < 0.01 for antibiotics on AMEn). Relative weights of gizzard and proventriculus, and gizzard : intestine weight ratio were higher in D+ than in D− birds, while relative weight of intestine was increased in D− birds compared with D+ birds. Antibiotics reduced intestine relative weight in D+ (P < 0.001) and D− (P < 0.01) lines. AMEn variations were efficiently predicted by the gizzard : intestine weight ratio. In conclusion, antibiotics were very efficient for improving growth performance, AMEn and digestibility values in both chicken lines. Xylanase was less efficient than antibiotics. Because of their low individual variabilities, D+ birds were much more efficient than D− ones for the detection of significant effects induced by xylanase supplementation. Differences between lines in feed : gain ratio, digestibilities and AMEn were reduced when xylanase and antibiotics were added together. Effects of xylanase supplementation and animal genetics on lipid digestibility could not be entirely explained in terms of intestinal bile acids. Other factors should be involved, especially for the lipid digestibility difference induced by animal genetics. The gizzard : intestine weight ratio was an efficient parameter for predicting AMEn variations due to animal genetics and additives.

This study investigated the effects of rider weight in the BW ratio (BWR) range common for Icelandic horses (20% to 35%), on stride parameters in tölt in Icelandic horses. The kinematics of eight experienced Icelandic school horses were measured during an incremental exercise test using a high-speed camera (300 frames/s). Each horse performed five phases (642 m each) in tölt at a BWR between rider (including saddle) and horse starting at 20% (BWR20) and increasing to 25% (BWR25), 30% (BWR30), 35% (BWR35) and finally 20% (BWR20b) was repeated. One professional rider rode all horses and weight (lead) was added to saddle and rider as needed. For each phase, eight strides at speed of 5.5 m/s were analyzed for stride duration, stride frequency, stride length, duty factor (DF), lateral advanced placement, lateral advanced liftoff, unipedal support (UPS), bipedal support (BPS) and height of front leg action. Stride length became shorter (Y=2.73−0.004x; P<0.01) and more frequent (Y=2.56+0.002x; P<0.001) with added weight. Duty factor and BPS increased with increased BWR (P<0.001), whereas UPS decreased (P<0.001). Lateral advanced timing of limb placement and liftoff and height of front leg action were not affected by BWR (P>0.05). In conclusion, increased BWR decreased stride length and increased DF proportionally to the same extent in all limbs, whereas BPS increased at the expense of decreased UPS. These changes can be expected to decrease tölt quality when subjectively evaluated according to the breeding goals for the Icelandic horse. However, beat, symmetry and height of front leg lifting were not affected by BWR.

Efficiency of food and nutrient (including energy) use are considered the key factors in the economic and environmental performance of livestock systems. The aim of this paper is to consider the basis of genetic variation in the components that constitute dietary nutrient efficiency; and to conclude whether there would be benefit, in any relevant terms, in including these components in breeding programmes that aim to improve nutrient efficiency within pig and poultry systems of production. The components considered are (i) external, pre-ingestion losses, such as food spillage and its relation to feeding behaviour traits, (ii) digestive efficiency, (iii) maintenance requirements, (iv) net efficiency of energy and nutrient utilisation and (v) partitioning of scarce resources within productive and between productive and fitness functions. It is concluded that opportunities to exploit genetic variation exist mainly in the potential to improve the digestive efficiency of pigs and to reduce the maintenance requirements for resources mainly in hens, but also potentially in pigs. Current evidence suggests that there are very weak genetic and phenotypic correlations between components of feeding behaviour and productive traits, and little genetic variation in the net efficiency of nutrient utilisation among poultry and pig genotypes. The implication of the latter is that there would be little exploitable genetic variation in the partitioning of scarce nutrients between productive functions. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of the genetic basis of the partitioning of scarce nutrients between productive and fitness functions, and how this may impact upon the efficiency of nutrient use in pig and poultry systems. This is an area of research to which further effort might usefully be devoted.

Recently, we found that in ovo feeding of l-leucine (l-Leu) afforded thermotolerance, stimulated lipid metabolism and modified amino acid metabolism in male broiler chicks. However, the effects of in ovo feeding of l-Leu on thermoregulation and growth performance until marketing age of broilers are still unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of in ovo feeding of l-Leu on body weight (BW) gain under control thermoneutral temperature or chronic heat stress. We measured changes of body temperature and food intake, organ weight, as well as amino acid metabolism and plasma metabolites under acute and chronic heat stress in broilers. A total of 168 fertilized Chunky broiler eggs were randomly divided into 2 treatment groups in experiments. The eggs were in ovo fed with l-Leu (34.5 µmol/500 µl per egg) or sterile water (500 µl/egg) during incubation. After hatching, male broilers were selected and assigned seven to nine replicates (one bird/replicate) in each group for heat challenge experiments. Broilers (29- or 30-day-old) were exposed to acute heat stress (30 ± 1°C) for 120 min or a chronic heat cyclic and continued heat stress (over 30 ± 1°C; ages, 15 to 44 days). In ovo feeding of l-Leu caused a significant suppression of enhanced body temperature without affecting food intake, plasma triacylglycerol, non-esterified fatty acids, ketone bodies, glucose, lactic acid or thyroid hormones under acute heat stress. Daily body temperature was significantly increased by l-Leu in ovo feeding under chronic heat stress. Interestingly, in ovo feeding of l-Leu caused a significantly higher daily BW gain compared with that of the control group under chronic heat stress. Moreover, some essential amino acids, including Leu and isoleucine, were significantly increased in the liver and decreased in the plasma by l-Leu in ovo feeding under acute heat stress. These results suggested that l-Leu in ovo feeding afforded thermotolerance to broilers under acute heat stress mainly through changing amino acid metabolism until marketing age.

The last decade has seen important developments in the use of carotenoid pigments to authenticate pasture-feeding in ruminants. However, dehydrated alfalfa is sometimes incorporated in grain-based concentrates fed to stall-raised lambs, which may affect the reliability of the pasture-feeding authentication methods based on carotenoids in plasma and fat, due to significant residual carotenoid levels post-dehydration. The aim of this study was to examine whether other compounds can give additional information to authenticate diet and discriminate pasture-fed lambs from lambs fed high levels of alfalfa indoors. Two feeding treatments were compared: pasture-feeding (P) v. stall-feeding with dehydrated alfalfa (A). Each treatment group consisted of seven male Romanov × Berrichon lambs. Pasture-fed (P) lambs grazed a permanent graminaceae-rich pasture maintained at a leafy, green stage, offered ad libitum; they received no supplementation at pasture. A-group lambs were individually penned and fed dehydrated alfalfa and straw; their feed level was adjusted to achieve a similar growth pattern as for P-group lambs. Plasma carotenoid concentration was measured at slaughter by spectrophotometry. The reflectance spectrum of perirenal and subcutaneous caudal fat was measured at 24-h post mortem and used to calculate an index (absolute value of the mean integral (AVMI)) quantifying light absorption by carotenoid pigments present in the fat. The nitrogen (N) stable isotopes ratio (δ15N) in both feed and longissimus dorsi muscle was measured by isotopes ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Volatile compounds were analyzed in perirenal fat for five randomly chosen lambs per treatment, using dynamic headspace–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Plasma carotenoid concentration and AVMI of the fat did not differ significantly between P- and A-group lambs, but there were significant between-treatment differences in meat δ15N values and in the terpene profiles of perirenal fat. A discriminant analysis performed using three compounds in different animal tissues (δ-cadinene in perirenal fat, δ15N value of the meat and plasma carotenoid concentration) clearly separated pasture-fed lambs from lambs fed high levels of alfalfa indoors.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the ability of a line selected for reproductive longevity (LP) to confront productive challenges compared to a line selected during 31 generations for litter size at weaning (V). A total of 133 reproductive rabbit does were used (72 and 61 from LP and V lines, respectively). Within each line, three groups with different levels of productive effort were planned: PP9, inseminated at day 4 after the first partum and with nine kits during the second partum, and inseminated after first weaning (30 days) and with nine (PW9) or five kits (PW5) during the second partum. The reproductive performance, body condition (perirrenal fat thickness (PFT)) and lipolytic response were controlled. LP does showed greater mean live weight (LW; +128 g; P < 0.05), PFT (+0.47 mm; P < 0.05) and estimated body energy (EBE; +0.29 MJ/kg; P < 0.01) than V does at second partum. However, LP does that mated at first post partum did not significantly differ in EBE relative to V does at second partum. During the first week of lactation, dry matter (DM) intake was similar for both lines (94 and 95 g DM/kg LW0.75 day for V and LP does, respectively). There was a significant difference in milk yield between both lines during the first week when litter size was nine (60 v. 54 g of milk/kg LW0.75 day for LP and V does, respectively; P < 0.01), but no difference when litter size was five. Consequently, when litter size was nine, LP does showed a lower recovery of PFT (0.6 mm less; P < 0.05) than V does during the first 10 days of lactation. However, when litter size was five, LP does showed a higher LW (+210 g; P < 0.05) than V does at 10 days of lactation and a similar recovery of PFT. During the last 3 weeks of the lactation, LP does showed a higher feed intake (+6 g DM/kg LW0.75 day; P < 0.05) and milk yield (+27 g/day; P < 0.001) than V does when litter size was nine, resulting in no significant differences in LW at 30 days of lactation. However, when litter size was five, both lines showed similar feed intake and milk yield, maintaining their differences in LW at 30 days of lactation (+206 g for LP does; P < 0.05). These results show that the rabbit line selected for reproductive longevity is more robust with respect to coping with productive challenges, than a line selected for reproductive intensity.

There is a lot of evidence that chicory could be a highly palatable and nutritious source of forage for ruminants, well adapted to climate change and dry conditions in summer, thanks to its resistance to drought and high water content. This study aimed to describe the effect of incorporating chicory to ryegrass or to a ryegrass–white clover mixture on feeding behaviour, digestive parameters, nitrogen (N) balance and methane (CH4) emissions in sheep. In total, three swards of ryegrass, white clover and chicory were established and managed in a manner ensuring the forage use at a constant vegetative stage throughout the experiment. In all, four dietary treatments (pure ryegrass; binary mixture: 50% ryegrass–50% chicory; ternary mixture: 50% ryegrass–25% white clover–25% chicory; and pure chicory) were evaluated in a 4×4 replicated Latin square design with eight young castrated Texel sheep. Each experimental period consisted of an 8-day diet adaptation phase, followed by a 6-day measuring phase during which intake dynamics, chewing activity, digestibility, rumen liquid passage rate, fermentation end-products, N balance and CH4 emissions were determined. Data were analysed using a mixed model and orthogonal contrasts were used to detect the potential associative effects between ryegrass and chicory. The daily voluntary dry matter intake was lower for pure ryegrass than for diets containing chicory (P<0.001) and increased quadratically from 1.39 to 1.74 kg/day with increasing proportion of chicory. Huge positive quadratic effects (P<0.001) between ryegrass and chicory were detected on eating time and eating rate just after feeding indicating an increase of the motivation to eat with mixtures, whereas rumination activity decreased linearly with the proportion of chicory (P<0.001). The organic matter digestibility was similar among treatments (around 80%), but a strong positive quadratic P<0.001) effect was observed on liquid passage rate suggesting that chicory allowed fast particle breakdown in the rumen. Animals fed with the ryegrass–white clover–chicory mixture had the higher urinary N losses (P<0.001), whereas retained N per day or per g N intake was greater when the proportion of chicory was at least 50% (P<0.001) being ~40% greater than for the other treatments. The CH4 yield was lower with pure chicory than with the other treatments (P<0.001) for which emissions were similar. In conclusion, mixing ryegrass and chicory in equal proportions produces a synergy on voluntary intake and an improved N use efficiency likely due to complementarity in chemical composition, increased motivation to eat and faster ruminal particle breakdown.

The present work was intended to analyse the chemical composition and oxidative stability of the muscle biceps femoris and adipose tissues from Iberian pigs fed different finishing diets: free-range feeding on grass and acorns in a ‘Montanera’ traditional system (MON), fed in confinement with a mixed diet containing high-oleic sunflower oil (115 g/kg of diet) and supplemented with 250 mg/kg α-tocopherol (HOVE), and fed in confinement with a tocopherol-non-supplemented control mixed diet (CON). Muscles from MON pigs contained significantly (P < 0.05) higher amounts of intramuscular fat than those from HOVE and CON pigs. Muscles from MON and HOVE pigs had significantly higher levels of α-tocopherol than muscles from CON pigs whereas free-range feeding provided significantly higher levels of γ-tocopherol to muscles from MON pigs than the experimental diets did to CON and HOVE pigs. Adipose tissues from MON and HOVE pigs contained significantly lower proportions of saturated fatty acids and significantly higher levels of oleic acid and monounsaturated fatty acids than those from CON pigs. Tissues from MON pigs contained significantly smaller levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids than those from CON and HOVE pigs. To a higher extent, feeding background affected the fatty acid composition of polar lipids from the muscle bicepsfemoris than that of neutral lipids. Tissues from MON pigs contained significantly smaller ω-6/ω-3 values than those from pigs fed mixed diets. Compared to tissues from CON pigs, those from MON and HOVE pigs exhibited a higher oxidative stability as a likely result of a most favourable fatty acid composition and the presence of higher tocopherol levels.

Female crayfish stores male gametes after mating until the beginning of egg laying and fertilization. The aim of the present study was to investigate the duration of post-mating spermatophore storage as well as the timing and temperature of spawning in two crayfish species of economic importance, namely the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus and the noble crayfish Astacus astacus. Results showed that the average duration of the post-mating spermatophore storage is significantly (P<0.05) longer in the noble crayfish (34.6±1.7 days, range: 19 to 60 days) than the signal crayfish (3.9±0.5 days, range: 1 to 18 days). The highest percentages of the post-mating spermatophore storage duration in the signal crayfish (46.5%) and the noble crayfish (44.5%) were 1 and 31 to 40 days, respectively. While there is an overlap in the timings of mating and egg laying in the signal crayfish, these two reproductive processes were not observed at the same days in the noble crayfish and there was at least 2 weeks interval between last mating and first egg laying individuals. Average mating and egg laying temperatures were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the signal crayfish than the noble crayfish. The average temperatures for mating in both species were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the temperatures that they utilized for egg laying. In conclusion, female noble crayfish stores post-mating spermatophores a longer duration compared with the signal crayfish. Also, the signal crayfish mates and lays egg in temperatures that are higher than the noble crayfish. Spawning season is shorter in the signal crayfish compared with the noble crayfish. The results of present study provide information contributing to the crayfish broodstock management in aquaculture.

A reduction in urinary nitrogen (N) excretion from dairy cows fed pasture containing a high N concentration in the dry matter (DM) will have environmental benefits, because losses to soil water and air by leachate and nitrous oxides (N2O) will be reduced. Condensed tannins (CT) reduce digestion of N, and provision as a dietary additive could have nutritional benefits for production, but the amount required and the responses to different sources of CT on milk production have not been defined. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate effects of supplementation with CT extracted from black wattle (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.) on milk production and faecal N concentration by lactating dairy cows grazing a vegetative Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)-based pasture. In one experiment, CT was administered as a drench, twice daily, to 38 multiparous Holstein–Friesian cows assigned to four treatments; control (CONT, 0 g/day), low CT (LCT, 111 g/day), medium CT (MCT, 222 g/day) and high CT (HCT, 444 g/day), grazing as a single group. The CT supplementation affected milk yield (P < 0.001) with a trend of declining milk yield as CT concentration increased from about 0.6 to about 2.9% of dietary DM. Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) decreased at MCT and HCT levels of supplementation (P < 0.01) but milk fat, CP and lactose percentage were not affected by CT supplementation. The CT supplementation increased N concentration in faeces for LCT and MCT treatments (P < 0.05), suggesting partitioning of dietary N away from urine. When CT was pelleted with grain, in a second experiment and fed twice daily as a supplement at milking, it reduced the acceptability relative to pellets without CT, and tended to lower milk production from 25.4 to 24.5 kg/day, although the decline was not significant (P > 0.05). The diet of cows fed pellets with CT contained about 1.2% CT in the DM but neither milk constituents nor MUN were affected by CT-supplemented grain (P > 0.05). These findings demonstrate beneficial effects for production of low concentrations (c. 0.6% DM) of CT from black wattle when given to cows grazing pasture with an N concentration of 3.8%, and suggest a diversion of N from urine, but when CT exceeded about 1.4% of dietary DM, milk production was depressed. The value of supplementing a pasture diet for lactating dairy cows with black wattle tannin extract will depend on costs of supplementation, returns from milk production and liabilities associated with N losses to urine.
