Two experiments were conducted to determine whether female to female influences could reduce the duration of the post-partum anoestrous period in beef cows. In experiment 1, cows were housed from calving, either in individual stalls, which precluded physical contact with other cows (treatment I; no. = 19) or as a group, with a cow in oestrus introduced to the group twice per week (treatment G; no. = 18). The percentage of cows cycling by day 50 post partum was similar for both treatments, but at 91 days post partum was significantly higher (P <0·05) in the G than in the I cows (89% v. 58%).

In experiment 2, cows were housed in individual stalls from calving and exposed twice per week to either cervical mucus collected from cows in oestrus (treatment M; no. = 21) or distilled water (treatment W; no. = 24). The percentage of cows cycling by 70 days post partum was similar in both treatments but by 130 days there were significantly more (P <0·05) M cows cycling (86% v. 58%). In neither experiment were LH profiles at 22,43 or 64 days influenced by treatment.

The results indicate that cervical mucus of cows in oestrus contains pheromone(s) which can reduce the postpartum anoestrous period in beef cows with extended anoestrous periods.

Various strategies have been developed to increase the cellular level of (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids in animals and humans. In the present study, we investigated the effect of dietary myristic acid, which represents 9% to 12% of fatty acids in milk fat, on the storage of α-linolenic acid and its conversion to highly unsaturated (n-3) fatty acid derivatives. Five isocaloric diets were designed, containing equal amounts of α-linolenic acid (1.3% of dietary fatty acids, i.e. 0.3% of dietary energy) and linoleic acid (7.0% of fatty acids, i.e. 1.5% of energy). Myristic acid was supplied from traces to high levels (0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 30% of fatty acids, i.e. 0% to 6.6% of energy). To keep the intake of total fat and other saturated fatty acids constant, substitution was made with decreasing levels of oleic acid (76.1% to 35.5% of fatty acids, i.e. 16.7% to 7.8% of energy) that is considered to be neutral in lipid metabolism. After 8 weeks, results on physiological parameters showed that total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol did not differ in the diets containing 0%, 5% and 10% myristic acid, but were significantly higher in the diet containing 30% myristic acid. In all the tissues, a significant increasing effect of the substitution of oleic acid for myristic acid was shown on the level of both α-linolenic and linoleic acids. Compared with the rats fed the diet containing no myristic acid, docosahexaenoic acid significantly increased in the brain and red blood cells of the rats fed the diet with 30% myristic acid and in the plasma of the rats fed the diet with 20% myristic acid. Arachidonic acid also increased in the brain of the rats fed the diet with 30% myristic acid. By measuring Δ6-desaturase activity, we found a significant increase in the liver of the rats fed the diet containing 10% of myristic acid but no effect at higher levels of myristic acid. These results suggest that an increase in dietary myristic acid may contribute in increasing significantly the tissue storage of α-linolenic acid and the overall bioavailability of (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain, red blood cells and plasma, and that mechanisms other than the single Δ6-desaturase activity are involved in this effect.

The objectives of the current study included the characterization of the temporal changes in indices of sulphur amino acid metabolism in piglets in response to vitamin B6 deficiency and repletion with graded levels of pyridoxine hydrochloride. In Experiment 1, 12 piglets (average initial weight = 5.3 kg; n = 6 per group) were fed a semi-purified diet containing either 0 (deficiency group) or 3 mg (control group) pyridoxine·HCl/kg diet, using a pair-feeding design, for 6 weeks. Piglets consuming vitamin B6-deficient diets exhibited decreased average daily gains on the 4th week and feed conversion efficiency from the 4th week until the end of the trial (P < 0.05). Plasma pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (PLP), in pigs consuming vitamin B6-deficient diets, was significantly lower than controls throughout the experiment (P < 0.01), reaching a nadir of 14% of the control animals’ value by the end of the trial. Indices of sulphur amino acid metabolism, including activities of hepatic cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine-γ-lyase (CGL) and serine hydroxymethyltransferase, as well as hepatic-free cysteine concentrations were markedly decreased after 6 weeks of B6 deficiency (P < 0.05). Total hepatic mRNA expressions for CBS and CGL were not affected. Concurrently, hepatic-free homocysteine concentrations increased by more than eight-fold (P < 0.01) at the end of the trial. An examination of plasma total homocysteine and cysteine concentrations revealed significant (P < 0.05) differences between treatments, with evidence of an abrupt shift in concentrations at 3 weeks post-initiation of dietary treatments (>25-fold increase in homocysteine; halving of cysteine values). At the end of Experiment 1, vitamin B6 deficiency significantly increased plasma methionine and serine levels, but decreased plasma glycine concentrations (P < 0.05). In Experiment 2, 20 pigs of 14 days old (initial BW = 5.0 kg) were subjected to a 4-week vitamin B6 depletion protocol, based on results obtained in Experiment 1. After the depletion period and assessment of baseline status (four pigs), remaining pigs were allocated to one of four dietary vitamin B6 repletion treatments: 0.75, 1.5, 2.25 and 3 mg/kg diet as pyridoxine·HCl (n = 4 per level) for 14 days. Significant dose-dependent increases in plasma PLP and cysteine, and decreases in homocysteine were observed, and these were sensitive to the duration of repletion. In conclusion, data from the current studies support the use of both plasma PLP and homocysteine as sensitive indices of vitamin B6 status in the pig. Additionally, the observed patterns of responses in vitamin B6-sensitive metabolites are supportive of an inclusion level of 2.25 mg/kg diet, as pyridoxine·HCl, in diets for young pigs.

Estimates of heritabilities, common litter of birth effects and additive maternal genetic effects were produced for ultrasonic backfat depth, average daily food intake, average daily gain and food conversion ratio of Landrace boars and gilts. Boars and gilts were performance tested under different regimes. A bivariate derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood procedure was used to estimate genetic correlations between the performance test traits as recorded in the two sexes.

Heritability estimates from the analysis including the common litter of birth effect tended to be towards the low end of the range of recently published estimates. This may reflect either population specific effects, such as effects of long-term selection, or the use of an individual animal model.

Estimates of the common litter of birth effect were around 0·05, and generally had a significant effect upon the fit of the model, while additive maternal genetic effect estimates were negligible. Therefore, it is expected that omission of maternal effects from models for evaluation by best linear unbiased prediction will not hinder genetic progress. Inclusion of common litter of birth effects would be recommended, although this result may not hold for populations given food ad libitum.

The estimates of genetic correlations between performance test traits of boars and gilts indicate that the levels of genotype-environment interaction (G × E) and genotype-sex interaction were low across most traits and data sets, with all genetic correlation estimates lying between 0·8 and 1·0. The lowest estimates of the genetic correlations, which were observed in data sets where the environments appeared to differ most, indicate that G × E interactions may be a problem in populations where males and females are subject to test regimes with greater differences than those seen here.

Closely shorn Scottish Blackface female sheep aged 9–14 months, half on high plane and half on low plane nutrition, were subjected, in climate chambers, to two short acute cold exposures down to −20°C. The acute exposures were separated by two weeks chronic exposure to a moderately subcriticai temperature (+8°C) or to a thermoneutral temperature (+30°C). Most of the sheep showed a greater resistance to body cooling at the second acute exposure (Slee and Sykes, 1967). This increased resistance to hypothermia, defined as acclimatization, was apparently influenced more by acute than by chronic cold exposure. The present paper deals with changes in skin temperature, heart rate, shivering intensity and skinfold thickness which also resulted from cold exposure, and accompanied acclimatization.

After acute cold exposure followed by chronic exposure to +8°C the following changes in these parameters were observed:

1. Extremity skin temperatures and heart rates were consistently increased at thermoneutral ambient temperatures.

2. Vasoconstriction of the extremities and increased heart rate, both of which normally occur during the early stages of cold exposure, were delayed.

3. Heart rates at sub-zero ambient temperatures were increased.

4. Cold-induced vasodilatation at sub-zero ambient temperatures was increased.

After acute cold treatment alone the intensity of shivering during the second acute exposure was reduced. Also the onset of foot vasoconstriction was slightly delayed.

A highly significant relationship was observed between shivering intensity and heart rate during cold exposure.

Plane of nutrition had less effect on the physiological responses to cooling than did previous cold experience.

It was suggested in discussion that the physiological responses associated with acclimatization were: elevated basal metabolic rate, delayed onset of vasoconstriction and delayed metabolic response to cold, and consequent lowering of the critical temperature. Summit metabolism was also increased and shivering intensity reduced during acute cold exposure. Some of these responses could have resulted from either acute or chronic moderate cold exposure. However their persistence, once induced, appeared to depend upon continued exposure to moderate cold.

At calving, purebred animals of the Belgian Blue (BB) breed are compromised by the incompatibility in size and shape of the dam and her calf, resulting in a very high incidence of dystocia problems. To clarify which body parts of the calf are of decisive importance to allow natural delivery and to investigate both the mean value as well as the variation among these body sizes within this breed (variation being an important condition for selection), measurements of nine body parts (body weight at birth (BW), body length (BL), length of the head (LH), shoulder width (SW), hip width (HW), heart girth (HG), withers height (WH) and the circumference of the fetlock of both the front (CFF) and the hind leg (CFH)) were assessed in 147 newborn purebred BB calves on 17 farms. Simple and partial correlations were assessed and we examined whether environmental factors (gender of the calf, parity of the cow, type of calving, season of birth and time of measurement after birth) were significantly associated with these specific calf measurements. The mean BW was 49.2 ± 7.1 kg. The average BL was 56.4 ± 4.5 cm and the mean LH was 24.4 ± 2.3 cm. Measurements obtained for SW and HW were 22.4 ± 2.2 and 22.9 ± 2.1 cm, respectively, whereas the mean WH was 71.1 ± 4.7 cm. Measurements of circumferences revealed a CFF of 17.9 ± 1.1 cm, a CFH of 18.0 ± 1.0 cm and a mean HG of 78.0 ± 5.4 cm. Partial correlations of the BW with eight body measurements were significant (P < 0.01) and ranged between 0.17 and 0.85; 0.42 and 0.88; and 0.24 and 0.88 when corrected for gender, parity and type of calving, respectively. BL (P < 0.01) and the CFF and CFH (P < 0.001) are larger in bull calves than in heifer calves. Calves born through caesarean section had broader SW (P < 0.01) and HW (P < 0.01) when compared with calves born after natural calving (defined as born per vaginam without assistance or with slight traction). Sizes of calves born out of multiparous cows were generally larger than of calves born out of heifers (SW: P < 0.001; HW: P < 0.05). As SW and HW are the broadest points of a BB calf, they are both candidates for being the limiting measures for calving ease, but the difference between HW and SW for the total data set was not different from zero (P > 0.05). In contrast to male calves in which no significant difference (between HW and SW) could be found, female calves show the difference between HW and SW that was significantly different from zero (P < 0.001); thus, in female calves, the HW is the most limiting factor of the calf’s body. The significant variation in some body measures between the calves and the strong correlation within these sizes raises the possibility of selection towards smaller calves aiming to limit the dystocia problem in the BB breed. Furthermore, on the basis of our results, we were able to build equations for the farmer to use at the moment of calving containing the LH, the CF and the calf’s gender to estimate SW and HW, the limiting body parts of the calf to be born naturally. Together with the knowledge of the pelvic size of the dam, this information gives the obstetrician or the farmer a more accurate prediction of the probability of natural calving at parturition.

Ossification score and animal age are both used as proxies for maturity-related collagen crosslinking and consequently decreases in beef tenderness. Ossification score is strongly influenced by the hormonal status of the animal and may therefore better reflect physiological maturity and consequently eating quality. As part of a broader cross-European study, local consumers scored 18 different muscle types cooked in three ways from 482 carcasses with ages ranging from 590 to 6135 days and ossification scores ranging from 110 to 590. The data were studied across three different maturity ranges; the complete range of maturities, a lesser range and a more mature range. The lesser maturity group consisted of carcasses having either an ossification score of 200 or less or an age of 987 days or less with the remainder in the greater maturity group. The three different maturity ranges were analysed separately with a linear mixed effects model. Across all the data, and for the greater maturity group, animal age had a greater magnitude of effect on eating quality than ossification score. This is likely due to a loss of sensitivity in mature carcasses where ossification approached and even reached the maximum value. In contrast, age had no relationship with eating quality for the lesser maturity group, leaving ossification score as the more appropriate measure. Therefore ossification score is more appropriate for most commercial beef carcasses, however it is inadequate for carcasses with greater maturity such as cull cows. Both measures may therefore be required in models to predict eating quality over populations with a wide range in maturity.

To investigate strategies for concentrate allocation, 155 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows received grass silage ad libitum during lactation weeks 4 to 22 in two experiments. A standard concentrate (196 g crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM)) was offered at the same average amount across the lactation period either at aflat rate or as two rates with a change of 6 kg in week 13. Treatments, described as kg concentrate DM per day in the first and second periods of lactation, were 3: 3, 6: 0, 3: 9 (experiment 1), 6: 6, 9: 3, 9: 9 and 12: 6 (experiments 1 and 2). In experiment 2, two additional treatments maintained CP supply from concentrate after a change from 9 and 12 kg DM by giving 3 and 6 kg high-protein concentrate (HP) DM per day (575 and 383 g CP per kg respectively).

Generally as concentrate intake increased silage intake fell, DM intake rose and yields of milk and all milk solids increased linearly. However, in experiment 1 from a base of 3 kg DM, as concentrate intake increased so did fat yield overall and protein yield in mid-lactation but at a declining rate. Fat concentration was depressed at the lowest and highest concentrate levels. Protein concentration rose as concentrate allowance increased particularly at low levels. Increasing concentrate in mid lactation improved protein but not fat concentration. Additional concentrate either spared weight loss or increased weight gain. Distributing more of a fixed allowance of concentrate to early lactation did not affect cow performance overall.

Silage intake, milk, protein and lactose yields and protein concentration increased and fat concentration was reduced by giving HP concentrates, effects being greater with 3 than with 6 kg DM per day. Reducing concentrate level while maintaining CP intake did not influence milk and solids yields. The ratios of responses to concentrate CP (3 kg DM per day HP v. 3 kg DM per day standard) compared with concentrate energy (9 kg DM per day standard v. 3 kg DM per day HP) were 2·1, 2·2, 7·4 and 1·9 for milk, fat, protein and lactose yields respectively. The results suggest feeding strategies for manipulating the production and quality of milk from grass silage diets.

Previous cafeteria studies suggested that a moderate natural gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection did not modify the resource selection of adult Criollo goats towards tannin-rich plants compared with worm-free goats. A higher infection with Haemonchus contortus could trigger a change in the resource selection behaviour towards tannin-rich foliage. Alternatively, goats might select plant species solely to meet their nutritional requirements. A cafeteria study investigated the effect of a high artificial infection with H. contortus on the feed resource selection of goats. Adult Criollo goats (37.5±4.8 kg BW) with browsing experience were distributed in two groups: the infected group (IG) with six animals artificially infected with H. contortus (6000 L3/animal); and the non-infected group (NIG) with six animals maintained worm-free. The experiment included two 5-day periods with additional 5-day adaptation period. In the first period, animals were offered foliage of five plant species with a decreasing gradient of condensed tannins (CT) (Mimosa bahamensis, Gymnopodium floribundum, Havardia albicans, Acacia pennatula, Lysiloma latisiliqum), and three plant species with negligible CT content (Leucaena leucocephala, Piscidia piscipula and Brosimum alicastrum). In the second period the foliage of B. alicastrum was withdrawn. A grain-based concentrate feed was offered daily at 1% BW in DM basis. Dry matter and nutrient intake was determined. Foliage selection of each experimental group was determined using the Chesson selection index. The H. contortus egg count per gram of faeces (EPG) was determined for infected goats twice daily. Chesson index showed a similar pattern of foliage selection on periods 1 and 2. Mean EPG of goats in IG was 2028±259 EPG during period 1 and 1 293±198 EPG during period 2 (P>0.05). During period 1, the selection pattern was highest for B. alicastrum (tannin-free), followed by a tannin-rich plant (M. bahamensis). These two plants remained as highly selected during period 2. The Chesson index showed that both experimental groups (IG and NIG) selected the same plant species in both periods. Thus, a high H. contortus infection did not affect selection of goats fed with CT-rich plants. Apparently, goats balanced their nutrient intake with the plants selected, showing evidence of nutritional wisdom. This balance may have helped to prevent excess protein in the diet and also to maintain a low GIN infection, both considered as examples of prophylactic self-medication.

The uptake of genomic selection (GS) by the swine industry is still limited by the costs of genotyping. A feasible alternative to overcome this challenge is to genotype animals using an affordable low-density (LD) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip panel followed by accurate imputation to a high-density panel. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to screen incremental densities of LD panels in order to systematically identify one that balances the tradeoffs among imputation accuracy, prediction accuracy of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs), and genotype density (directly associated with genotyping costs). Genotypes using the Illumina Porcine60K BeadChip were available for 1378 Duroc (DU), 2361 Landrace (LA) and 3192 Yorkshire (YO) pigs. In addition, pseudo-phenotypes (de-regressed estimated breeding values) for five economically important traits were provided for the analysis. The reference population for genotyping imputation consisted of 931 DU, 1631 LA and 2103 YO animals and the remainder individuals were included in the validation population of each breed. A LD panel of 3000 evenly spaced SNPs (LD3K) yielded high imputation accuracy rates: 93.78% (DU), 97.07% (LA) and 97.00% (YO) and high correlations (>0.97) between the predicted GEBVs using the actual 60 K SNP genotypes and the imputed 60 K SNP genotypes for all traits and breeds. The imputation accuracy was influenced by the reference population size as well as the amount of parental genotype information available in the reference population. However, parental genotype information became less important when the LD panel had at least 3000 SNPs. The correlation of the GEBVs directly increased with an increase in imputation accuracy. When genotype information for both parents was available, a panel of 300 SNPs (imputed to 60 K) yielded GEBV predictions highly correlated (⩾0.90) with genomic predictions obtained based on the true 60 K panel, for all traits and breeds. For a small reference population size with no parents on reference population, it is recommended the use of a panel at least as dense as the LD3K and, when there are two parents in the reference population, a panel as small as the LD300 might be a feasible option. These findings are of great importance for the development of LD panels for swine in order to reduce genotyping costs, increase the uptake of GS and, therefore, optimize the profitability of the swine industry.

A multi-trait animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters among lactation somatic cell score (SCS) and udder-type traits in South African Jersey cattle, through restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedures. Data comprised records on 18 321 Jersey cows in 470 herds, collected through the National Milk Recording Scheme from 1996 to 2002. Average SCS in the first three lactations (SCS1, SCS2 and SCS3) were considered as different traits and the udder-type traits were fore udder attachment (FUA), rear udder height (RUH), rear udder width (RUW), udder cleft (UC), udder depth (UD), fore teat placement (FTP), rear teat placement (RTP) and fore teat length (FTL). Heritability estimates for the respective lactation SCS were 0.07 ± 0.01, 0.11 ± 0.01 and 0.11 ± 0.02. Udder-type traits had heritability estimates ranging from 0.14 ± 0.01 for UD to 0.30 ± 0.02 for FTL. Genetic correlations between SCS and udder-type traits ranged from −0.003 ± 0.07 between FUA and SCS3 to −0.50 ± 0.07 between UD and SCS3. Slow genetic progress is expected when selection is applied independently on SCS and udder-type traits, due to the generally low heritabilities. Tightly attached shallow udders with narrowly placed rear teats are associated with low SCS in the Jersey population.

The objective of this work was to study the changes that, selecting for environmental variability of birth weight (BW), could bring to other interesting traits in livestock such as: survivability at weaning (SW), litter size (LS) and weaning weight (WW), their variability assessed from standard deviations of LS, standard deviation of WW (SDWW) and also the total litter weight at birth (TLBW) and total litter weight at weaning. Data were registered after eight generations of a divergent selection experiment for BW environmental variability in mice. Genetic parameters and phenotypic and genetic evolution were assessed using linear homoscedastic and heteroscedastic models in which the traits were attributed to the female, except BW and WW that were in some models also attributed to the pup. Genetic correlation between the trait and variability levels was −0.81 for LS and −0.33 for WW. Clear divergent phenotypic trends were observed between lines for LS, WW and SDWW. Although animals were heavier in the high line, TLBW and at weaning was greater in the low line. Despite the negative genetic correlation that was obtained, SDWW was also higher in the high line. Heritabilities were 0.21 and 0.06, respectively, for LS and SW. Both phenotypic and genetic trends showed clear superiority of the low line over the high line for these traits, but inferior for WW. Heteroscedastic model performed similar to the homoscedastic model when there was enough information. Considering LS and survival, the low line was preferred from a welfare point of view, but its superiority from the productivity perspective was not clear. Robustness seemed higher as shown by a low variation and having a benefit to the animal welfare, but this still remains unclear. It was concluded that low variation benefits the welfare of animals.

Data from 1357 boars ad libitum fed on a performance testing scheme were analysed to explore the genetic aspects of voluntary food intake. The heritabilities of food intake, daily gain and food/gain were found to be 0·23, 0·41 and 0·18 respectively. The correlations obtained between gain and intake of 0·63 (phenotypic) and 0·89 (genetic) were typical of those reported for ad libitum feeding but greater than those reported for semi-restricted. Estimates of genetic correlation between gain and efficiency ranged from 0·64 to zero and for the phenotypic correlation from 0·44 to zero and were smaller than those reported for restricted feeding. Correlations between intake and efficiency were highly negative on the phenotypic level but small and of variable size genetically, in contrast to reports of small phenotypic and positive genetic correlations under restriction.

The behaviour of individually-penned lambs was observed and found to include many abnormal as well as normal behaviour patterns. Those with ad libitum pelleted concentrate or hay or greater environmental disturbance spent less time exhibiting abnormal behaviour.

Several processes have been suggested to protect lipids from bioactivity of the rumen microorganisms. The majority of experiments with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were conducted using calcium salts of CLA. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of encapsulated CLA (E-CLA) that was supplemented during days 21 to 100 post partum (PP), on milk fat depression, recovery rate and performance parameters. Forty-two multiparous Israeli-Holstein cows were divided at day 21 PP into two treatment groups: (i) control – supplemented with 43 g/day per cow of calcium salts of fatty acids (FAs). (ii) E-CLA – supplemented with 50 g/day per cow of encapsulated lipid supplement providing 4.7 g/day per cow of trans-10, cis-12 CLA. Post-treatment cows were followed for recovery rate until 140 days PP. Dry matter intake (DMI) during the treatment period was reduced by 2.5%, and milk yield was enhanced by 4.5% in the E-CLA cows. Milk fat percentage and yield were reduced by 13% and 9%, respectively, in the E-CLA treatment as compared with the control. The energy-corrected milk output was 3.6% higher in the control group than in the E-CLA group. Yields of trans-10, cis-12 CLA isomer in milk was 2.13-fold higher in the E-CLA cows than in the controls. Full recovery to milk fat percentage of the control group occurred 4 to 5 weeks after cessation of the E-CLA supplementation. No differences between groups were observed in any fertility parameter that was tested. In conclusion, the E-CLA supplement decreased DMI, enhanced milk yield, and decreased energy output in milk, and was effective in depressing milk fat. Full recovery to the milk fat content, but not yield, of the control group in the E-CLA group was relatively slow and occurred 4 to 5 weeks after termination of the supplementation.

An experiment was conducted to show the effectiveness of selection for improved food conversion ratio on ad libitum group feeding. Selection (32 ♀♀ and 8 ♂♂) and unselected control (32 ♀♀ and 16 ♂♂ lines were maintained for seven generations at the rate of one per year. Progeny were fed ad libitum from 27 to 82 kg live weight: boars singly or in pairs, and gilts in litter groups. Selection was on pen average food conversion ratio (food/live-weight gain), recalculated as each pig reached 82 kg.

In spite of selection differentials averaging 0·61 s.d. per generation, there was no response (selection minus control) in food conversion at Generation 6 (−0·03, s.e. 0·08). However, there were correlated increases in daily live-weight gain (56, s.e. 18 g), daily food intake (145, s.e. 59 g) and ultrasonic backfat (2·4, s.e. 0·4 mm). In Generation 7, 146 full-sib pairs (male castrate and gilt) were tested on ad libitum or scale (0·77 g/g ad libitum daily food intake) feeding. Line by feeding regime interactions were absent for all traits except killing-out proportion and belly thickness.

The increased fatness of the selection line on ad libitum feeding was retained on the scale (2·2 v. 2·4, s.e. 10 mm), suggesting a primary difference in partition of nutrients rather than intake. The selection procedure adopted was not successful in improving food conversion, but no clear conclusions could be drawn from the experiment. Uncertainty remains as to the value of group food consumption measurements in selection programmes.

Four diets which varied in crude protein concentration from 140 to 240 g crude protein per kg dry matter were given to gilts in experiment 1, and two diets containing 140 and 200 g crude protein per kg dry matter were given t o boars and barrows in experiment 2. Two levels of feeding were offered in both experiments and energy and nitrogen balances were measured at 30 and 90 kg live weight in both experiments, and also at 50 kg in experiment 1. Nitrogen intake had a small negative influence on energy retention by pigs of all sexes, an effect which was independent of the large positive effect of metabolizable energy intake. The ratio of metabolizable energy concentration to digestible energy concentration decreased in association with increases in crude protein concentration of the diets. The results show that comparisons of feeds on the basis of their digestible energy concentrations would lead to overestimation of the energy values of those containing high protein concentrations. Live weight (or age) and metabolizable energy intake exerted positive influences on the amount of energy retained per kg live-weight gain, whereas nitrogen intake exerted a negative influence. Values for energy retained per kg live-weight gain predicted from multiple regression equations, together with calculated values for maintenance and net efficiency, were used to predict the energy retention and growth rate of pigs in various circumstances.

Nitrogen retention increased in association with increases in nitrogen intake for pigs of all sexes at 30 kg live weight; there was also a corresponding increase for boars at 90kg live weight, but not for gilts or barrows at this weight. Boars retained more nitrogen than did barrows at 30 and 90 kg live weight only if given the diet with the higher concentration of protein.

Metabolizable energy intake appeared to exert a small positive influence on the nitrogen retention by pigs of all sexes at 90kg live weight; however, it appeared to have no influence on nitrogen retention by pigs at 30kg live weight.

The aim of the present experiment was to examine the effect of different levels of rapeseed meal (RSM) and sunflower meal (SFM) and enzyme combination (endoxylanase and β-glucanase) on the production performance, carcass quality, gizzard development and digesta viscosity of broiler chickens. The experimental design was a 3×2 factorial arrangement of treatments evaluating three diet types containing different levels of RSM and SFM (low (L), medium (M) and high (H)) and two levels of enzyme inclusion (0 or 100 g/tonne diet to provide 1220 U xylanase and 152 U β-glucanase per kg diet). Broiler starter and grower/finisher diets were formulated, based on wheat and soya bean meal and containing 50, 50 and 80 g/kg RSM and 0, 50 and 60 g/kg SFM for L, M and H treatments, respectively, during starter period and 80, 80 and 120 g/kg RSM and 0, 80 and 100 g/kg SFM for L, M and H, respectively, during grower/finisher period, and each diet was fed ad libitum to eight pens of 20 male broilers each. During the starter period (1 to 21 days), birds fed the H treatment had lower (P<0.05) BW gain (BWG) compared with those fed the L and M treatments. Diet type also influenced (P<0.05) feed intake (FI). Feeding the H treatment reduced (P<0.05) FI compared with the M treatment. Diet type and enzyme supplementation had no effect (P>0.05) on feed conversion ratio (FCR). During the grower/finisher phase (22 to 42 day) and over the entire period (1 to 42 day) birds fed the H treatment had lower (P<0.05) BWG and higher (P<0.05) FCR compared with those fed the L and M diets. Enzyme supplementation improved (P<0.05) FCR compared with the unsupplemented diets. No interactions (P>0.05) between RSM and SFM inclusion level and enzyme supplementation were observed for any of the measured parameters at any period. Diet type and enzyme supplementation had no effect (P>0.05) on carcass traits, abdominal fat pad, breast meat yield and jejunal digesta viscosity. Diet type influenced (P=0.05) relative empty gizzard weight, where the H treatment had higher relative empty gizzard weight compared with the L treatment. Enzyme supplementation tended (P=0.10) to increase relative empty gizzard weight. The present data suggest that high inclusion of SFM and RSM negatively influenced broiler performance. Enzyme supplementation improved FCR at all levels of RSM and SFM included in this study, but did not recover the reduction in weight gain caused by high inclusion of RSM and SFM.

In Germany all keepers of livestock are legally required to record animal welfare indicators as part of their on-farm self-assessment. The Association for Technology and Structures in Agriculture (Kuratorium für Technik und Bauwesen in der Landwirtschaft e.V. (KTBL)) has suggested the use of a particular set of animal welfare indicators in their publication Animal welfare indicators: Practical guide – Pigs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the inter-observer reliability (Inter-OR) and intra-observer reliability (Intra-OR) of these indicators with respect to the welfare of fattening pigs. For the assessment of Inter-OR, three observers evaluated six KTBL animal welfare indicators. The Inter-OR of the indicators was calculated from the results using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). ‘Excellent’ Inter-OR results were found for the indicators tail length (ICC 0.89), skin lesions (ICC 0.77) and ear lesions (ICC 0.80). In contrast, the Inter-OR of the indicators tail lesions (ICC 0.46) and faecal soiling (ICC 0.47) were considered to be only ‘fair’ and that of the indicator lameness (ICC 0.36) as ‘poor’. For the evaluation of the Intra-OR, the same three observers assessed the welfare of 162 to 200 fattening pigs using the same welfare indicators in total eight times. Again ICCs, here per indicator and observer, were used to calculate the Intra-OR. The Intra-OR of the indicators faecal soiling (ICC 0.81) and ear lesions (ICC 0.97) lay in the ‘excellent’ range on average. While the Intra-OR of the indicators skin lesions (ICC 0.67), tail length (ICC 0.74) and lameness (ICC 0.60) could still be considered as being ‘good’, the Intra-OR of the indicator tail lesions (ICC 0.52) could only be assessed as being ‘fair’. From these results the significance of the KTBL indicators could be judged as follows: it is possible to use all the chosen indicators apart from the indicator tail lesions as an internal controlling instrument or as part of an internal weak-point analysis as long as the indicators are evaluated by the same person. A comparison of the indicators tail lesions, lameness and faecal soiling when assessed by different observers should be considered critically because the Inter-OR of these three indicators could only be considered as being ‘poor’ to ‘fair’.

This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy (NIRS) technology for prediction of the chemical composition (moisture content and fatty acid composition) of fat from fast-growing, lean slaughter pig samples coming from breeding programmes. NIRS method I: a total of 77 samples of intact subcutaneous fat from pigs were analysed with the FOSS FoodScan NIR spectrophotometer (850 to 1050 nm) and then used to predict the moisture content by using partial least squares (PLS) regression methods. The best equation obtained has a coefficient of determination for cross-validation (CV; R2cv) and a root mean square error of a CV (RMSECV) of 0.88 and 1.18%, respectively. The equation was further validated with (n = 15) providing values of 0.83 and 0.42% for the coefficient of determination for validation (R2val) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), respectively. NIRS method II: in this case, samples of melted subcutaneous fat were analysed in an FOSS XDS NIR rapid content analyser (400 to 2500 nm). Equations based on modified PLS regression methods showed that NIRS technology could predict the fatty acid groups, the main fatty acids and the iodine value accurately with R2cv, RMSECV, R2val and RMSEP of 0.98, 0.38%, 0.95 and 0.49%, respectively (saturated fatty acids), 0.94, 0.45%, 0.97 and 0.65%, respectively (monounsaturated fatty acids), 0.97, 0.28%, 0.99 and 0.34%, respectively (polyunsaturated fatty acids), 0.76, 0.61%, 0.84 and 0.87%, respectively (palmitic acid, C16:0), 0.75, 0.16%, 0.89 and 0.10%, respectively (palmitoleic acid, C16:1n-7), 0.93, 0.41%, 0.96 and 0.64%, respectively (steric acid, C18:0), 0.90, 0.51%, 0.94 and 0.44%, respectively (oleic acid, C18:1n-9), 0.97, 0.25%, 0.98 and 0.29% (linoleic acid, C18:2n-6), 0.68, 0.09%, 0.57 and 0.16% (α-linolenic acid, C18:3n-3) and 0.97, 0.57, 0.97 and 1.22, respectively (iodine value, calculated). The magnitude of this error showed quite good accuracy using these rapid methods in prediction of the moisture and fatty acid composition of fat from pigs involved in breeding schemes.
