To study the effect of feeding silages with different botanical composition, on rumen and lamb fat, 30 male lambs were assigned to five different silage groups for 11 weeks: botanically diverse silage (BDS); white clover silage (WCS); red clover silage (RCS), intensive English ryegrass silage (IRS) and crushed linseed and maize silage (MSL). Besides the silages, animals received organic wheat and barley and the MSL group additionally received bicarbonate (15 g/day). Silages were sampled when the bales were opened and analysed for fatty acid (FA) content and chemical composition. At slaughter, ruminal contents were sampled and 24 h after slaughter, longissimus muscle and subcutaneous (SC) fat were sampled. All samples were analysed for FA composition. The MSL group ingested the highest amount of FA (35.8 g/day v. 13.5, 19.4, 17.2 and 30.4 g/day for MSL v. BDS, WCS, RCS and IRS, respectively) and the sum of the major polyunsaturated FA, C18:2 n-6 and C18:3 n-3, was similar for groups BDS, WCS, RCS and MSL (61.3 g/100 g, 62.3 g/100 g, 62.3 g/100 g, 63.7 g/100 g of FA methylesters (FAME), respectively), while group IRS ingested higher proportions of these FA (74.5 g/100 g of FAME). Rumen data showed that animals fed BDS presented higher proportions of biohydrogenation intermediates, particularly C18:1 t11 and CLA c9t11, suggesting partial inhibition of rumen biohydrogenation. In the MSL group, the content of C18:3 n-3 in the rumen was highest, most probably due to reduced lipolysis and hence biohydrogenation through the combined effect of esterified C18:3 n-3 and seed protection. Additionally, C18:3 n-3 proportions were higher in rumen contents of RCS animals compared with WCS animals, which could be due to the activity of the polyphenol oxidase enzyme in the RC silages. Proportions of C18:3 n-3 were similar between treatments both for SC and intramuscular (IM) fat, whereas CLA c9t11 content was higher in the SC fat of BDS animals and lower in the IM fat of IRS animals compared with the other forage groups. No differences were found for C20:4 n-6, C20:5 n-3, C22:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 in the IM fat of the animals. Nevertheless, indices for desaturation and elongation activity in muscle of BDS animals suggest some stimulation of the first three steps of desaturation and elongation (Δ6-desaturase, elongase and Δ5-desaturase) of long-chain FA.

The first part of this study was a cross-sectional analysis of the impact of 29 management factors on udder health in organic dairy farms in Switzerland. All 77 farms joined the extension program ‘pro-Q’. As a measure of udder health the theoretical bulk milk somatic cell count (TBMSCC) calculated by the monthly cow composite somatic cell count over a time period of 1 year was chosen. The basic udder health of the farms was determined by TBMSCC during the year prior to the start of the project (mean for all farms = 176 460 cells/ml). In the multivariable analysis, the five factors ‘swiss brown breed’, ‘alpine summer pasturing’, ‘calf feeding with milk from mastitis diseased cows’, ‘hard bedding’ and ‘no post-milking’ remained as significant risk factors on udder health. In the second part of the study, the development of management factors and the udder health situation affected by an extension program after 1 year was investigated. A partial improvement of the management factors on the farms but no overall improvement on udder health and no association between management changes and udder health changes were found. Improvement of udder health was more likely in farms with higher basic TBMSCC than in those farms with less udder health problems at the beginning of the project.

The effects of long-term administration of exogenous growth hormone (GH) on growth and carcass composition of pasture-fed, pre-pubertal dairy heifers were examined. Purified bovine GH (specific activity, 0·78 i.u. per mg) was administered daily for 21 weeks (0·6 mg GH per kg M0·75) to one member of each of 12 sets of twins. GH administration resulted in a significantly higher growth rate (0·58 kg/ day) compared with the control group (0·54 kg/day) and produced a heavier carcass (75·6 kg v. 69·5 kg). However, this production gain did not persist when GH treatment ceased. Plasma metabolite concentrations and carcass composition were not affected by GH treatment. GH tended to increase slightly the voluntary intake of freshly cut herbage dry matter (3·5 kg/day v. 3·7 kg/day; P < 0·05), but had no effect on food conversion efficiency. Serum somatomedin levels were not significantly increased by GH during week 13 of treatment. This experiment indicates that pre-pubertal heifers chronically treated with GH will increase their food intake to sustain an increased rate of growth. However, the production gains made over the treatment period were transient and within 5 weeks of the cessation of GH treatment there was no difference in the live weight of the two groups.

We evaluated the effects of heat stress (HS) and methionine supplementation on biological markers of stress and expression of the genes for superoxide dismutase (SOD), thioredoxin (TRx), thioredoxin reductase 1 (TRxR1) and methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) in broilers aged 1 to 21 or 22 to 42 days. The broilers were divided into two treatments, one with the recommended level of methionine supplementation (MS, supplementation of dl-2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid (dl-HMTBA)) and one without methionine supplementation (MD). The animals were maintained at a temperature of thermal comfort or one of HS (38°C for 24 h). Mortality was only observed in 42-day-old broilers exposed to HS and fed the MD diet, and the rate was 5%. Starter period: we observed an interaction effect between diet and temperature on the gene expression of TRxR1 and MsrA, and expression of these genes was higher in the HS animals that received the MS diet than that in birds with the MD diet. Grower period: the expression of SOD, TRxR1 and MsrA genes, activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and creatine kinase (CK) and content of creatinine were influenced by both study variables. In the HS animals, the expression of these genes, AST activity and creatinine content increased and CK activity decreased. In the animals on the MD diet, the expression of these genes and AST and creatinine values were higher and the CK activity was lower than those for the birds on the MS diet. Our results indicated that under HS conditions, the supplementation with dl-HMTBA could mitigate major damage caused by stress through the action on some genes related to TRx complex activity.

Tree leaf meals (TLM) are increasingly used in the tropics to feed pigs. The nutritive value of the TLM of cocoyam (Xanthosoma saggitifolium), mulberry (Morus alba) and Trichanthera gigantea, their effect on the digestive tract and their fermentation rate in the large intestine, were determined in adult sows given diets containing 150 or 300 g TLM per kg. The TLM contained from 8·5 to 12·0 MJ digestible energy per kg dry matter (DM) and from 60 to 125 g digestible protein per kg DM. The digestibility was not affected ( P>0·05) by their rate of incorporation in the diet. The apparent ileal protein digestibility of the diets containing 300 g TLM per kg was also determined by the slaughtering method. It reached 80% for the basal diet and 54, 70 and 74% for the Trichanthera-, mulberry- and cocoyam-based diets, respectively. No diet effect ( P>0·05) was observed on the weight and length of the gastro-intestinal tract, with the exception of a heavier caecum in sows given the Trichanthera-based diet ( P<0·01). The pH of the gastric fluid of these sows was also higher ( P<0·001). The fermentation of the dietary fibre in the large intestine was evaluated by the gas technique using syringes. The cocoyam leaves presented the highest amount of total gas produced after fibre fermentation ( P<0·001). The ranking order of gas production was identical to that observed for the digestibility coefficients: Trichanthera <mulberry <cocoyam. In conclusion, TLM can represent up to 0·3 of a diet for sows. Their use in sow nutrition may be considered in tropical regions where protein sources are scarce.

1. The digestible energy content of 14 meat meals and meat and bone meals produced from different regions in eastern Australia was determined using growing pigs. The relationship between digestible energy content and chemical constituents in the meals was investigated.

4. Digestibility of the energy and crude protein in the meals ranged from 0·63 to 0·77 and 0·73 to 0·91 respectively. These variations were not related to any of the major chemical constituents of the meals.

The distribution of chemical fat throughout the major depots of the fleece-free empty body was studied in 30 mature Scottish Blackface ewes from two sources and covering a wide range of fatness.

Relationships between amounts of chemical fat in individual depots and total body fat are presented. These provide information regarding rates of change in the distribution of fat with changing fatness. Information is also presented which allows estimates of the distribution of chemical fat throughout the body to be made from subjectively assessed condition scores.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of breed, parity and body fatness on the lipolytic response of dairy cows. The lipolytic response was estimated as the plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) response to an adrenergic challenge. Four challenges per lactation were carried out on 124 Danish Holsteins, 101 Danish Red and 82 Jerseys through consecutive lactations. Within breed, there were two genetic lines. Cows were equally distributed across two feeding treatments, a normal and a low energy total mixed ration. Diet composition was constant throughout lactation. The lipolytic response was significantly affected by breed, parity and stage of lactation. Lipolytic response was greater in early lactation than other stages in lactation (P 0·001). The larger breeds had a higher lipolytic response than Jerseys (P 0·05), and showed an increase in lipolytic response between first and second parity (P 0·05), but not between second and third lactation. Lipolytic response in Jerseys was not significantly affected by parity. No line or feeding treatment effects were observed on the lipolytic response. Ultrasound measurement of the area of subcutaneous backfat was used to estimate effect of body fatness on the lipolytic response. There was an increase in lipolytic response with increasing body fatness (P 0·05) in mid lactation and the dry period. The slope of this was not affected by breed or parity. It was concluded that the lipolytic response of dairy cows, and by implication the responsiveness of the lipid reserves, varies according to breed, parity and physiological state.

The aim of this study was to compare a fully slatted concrete floor (concrete slatted (CS)) with the same floor on which synthetic rubber slats were placed on the concrete slats (rubber slatted (RS)) as housing solution for finishing beef cattle. The present study involved five commercial beef cattle farms in which the floor of at least three pens was kept as fully slatted, and in an equal number of pens a rubber cover was placed on the floor, tightly matching the gap profile of the concrete slats to allow the drainage of manure. A total of 326 finishing beef bulls were used (153 on CS and 173 on RS), and regardless of the floor treatment animals were housed in groups of 6 to 12 bulls/pen with a space allowance of 3.1±0.2 m2/bull. Bulls had similar initial live weights (422.3 kg on CS and 425.0 kg on RS), but bulls on RS were heavier at the end of the finishing period with a higher average daily gain than bulls kept on CS (1.53 v. 1.46 kg/day; P<0.05). The proportion of bulls treated for locomotor problems was lower in RS pens compared with CS. Rubber covering prevented the occurrence of bursitis, but it increased the odds for hoof overgrowth at end of the finishing period. Hoof overgrowth detected in vivo in bulls on RS was confirmed at the slaughterhouse by the longer dorsal wall and diagonal lengths of the hoof as well as by a more acute toe angle. Compared with bulls on CS, bulls on RS showed less inactivity and resting time, increased social interactions, decreased abnormal lying down and unsuccessful attempts to lie down, as well as shortened the time for lying down. Bulls in RS pens were dirtier compared with those in CS pens, likely due to the draining gaps being reduced to 11.6±1.2% of the total pen surface compared with the 16.9±1.7% in CS pens. This study gave further evidence about the positive effects of the RS floor on growth performance and welfare of finishing beef cattle, although compromising cleanliness and hoof overgrowth.

This paper considers whether photometric calculations using standard human spectral sensitivity data are satisfactory for applications with other species or whether it would be worthwhile to use bespoke spectral sensitivity functions for each species or group of species. Applications include the lighting of interior areas and the design of photometers. Published spectral sensitivity data for a number of domesticated animals (human, turkey, duck, chicken, cat, rat and mouse) were used to calculate lighting levels for each species and compared with those derived from standard CIE human photopic and scotopic functions. Calculations were made for spectral power distributions of daylight, incandescent light and 12 fluorescent sources commonly used to light interiors. The calculated lighting levels showed clear differences between species and the standard human. Assuming that the resulting effects on retinal illuminance determine the overall perception of the level of light, there may be applications where these differences are important. However, evidence is also presented that the magnitude of these inter-species effects are similar to, or smaller than, those arising from other optical, physiological and psychological factors, which are also likely to influence the resulting perception. It is also important to recognise that lighting-related parameters such as the good colour rendering of surfaces, the avoidance of glare from lamps and other factors that may be species related are sometimes of greater importance than the lighting levels. Our results suggest that a judicial choice of three spectral sensitivity functions would satisfy most circumstances. Firstly, where the overall sensitivity is maximal in the medium to long wavelengths, the standard CIE photopic function will suffice, chicken, turkey and duck fall in this category. Secondly, in a small number of cases where the sensitivity centres on the short to medium wavelengths, the CIE scotopic function should be used, e.g. for the scotopic cat, photopic rat and photopic mouse. Finally, where an animal is also sensitive to the UV region of the spectrum and there is a significant component of UV radiation, then an additional measure of the UV response should be included, as for the photopic rat and photopic mouse.

Thirty Aberdeen Angus crossbred steers (281±16 kg) were used to test the effect of finishing feeding system on growth performance, meat quality and fatty acid (FA) profile in intramuscular fat. Steers were fed in confinement (forage:concentrate ratio of 50 : 50; DM basis) or with different levels of energy supplementation (0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2% BW) at pasture (Avena strigosa Schreb and Lolium multiflorum L.). There were no differences between treatments for ADG (average=1.60 kg/day), hot carcass weight (HCW) (average=229 kg) and subcutaneous fat depth (average=3 mm). Dressing % (P=0.06; tendency) and carcass ADG (P=0.02) linearly increased with level of supplementation for pasture steers. No differences were observed between treatments for tenderness, marbling, pH, color b*, or cooking loss and drip loss in samples of Longissimus dorsi. However L* increased linearly (P=0.05) with level of supplementation. The concentrations of myristic, palmitic, estearic and linoleic FA did not differ among treatments. The concentration of n-3 FA increased (P<0.001) in steers at pasture compared with confinement, but n-6 FA concentrations did not differ between feeding system. Supplementation up to 0.4% BW increase (P<0.001) conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and linolenic FA concentrations in intramuscular fat when compared with confinement. The level of supplementation on pasture linearly decreased (P<0.001) n-3 and CLA and linearly increased (P=0.001) the n-6 : n-3 ratio. Finishing of steers grazing winter pasture with energy supplementation or in confinement fed a medium-concentrate diet did not affect meat quality (tenderness, marbling, parameter b* on the CIE L*a*b* scale, cooking and drip losses) except for a* and L*. However, intramuscular fat of animals finished at pasture with moderate level of supplementation compared to animals fed in confinement had greater concentration of CLA, linolenic, and n-3, and lower n-6 : n-3 in intramuscular fat.

Ruminant husbandry constitutes the most important source of anthropogenic methane (CH4). In addition to enteric (animal-derived) CH4, excreta are another source of CH4, especially when stored anaerobically. Increasing the proportion of dietary concentrate is often considered as the primary CH4 mitigation option. However, it is unclear whether this is still valid when diets to be compared are energy-balanced. In addition, non-structural carbohydrates and side effects on nitrogen (N) emissions may be important. In this experiment, diet types representing either forage-only or mixed diets were examined for their effects on CH4 and N emissions from animals and their slurries in 18 lactating cows. Apart from a hay-only diet, treatments included two mixed diets consisting of maize stover, pelleted whole maize plants and gluten or barley straw and grain and soy bean meal. The diets were balanced in crude protein and net energy for lactation. After adaptation, data and samples were collected for 8 days including a 2-day CH4 measurement in respiratory chambers. Faeces and urine, combined proportionately according to excretion, were used to determine slurry-derived CH4 and N emissions. Slurry was stored for 15 weeks at either 14°C or 27°C, and temperatures were classified as ‘cool’ and ‘warm’, respectively. The low-starch hay-only diet had high organic matter and fibre digestibility and proved to be equally effective on the cows’ performance as mixed diets. The enteric CH4 formation remained unaffected by the diet except when related to digested fibre. In this case emission was lowest with the hay-only diet (61 v. 88 to 101 g CH4/kg digested NDF). Feeding the hay diet resulted in the highest slurry-CH4 production after 7 weeks of storage at 14°C and 27°C, and after 15 weeks at 14°C. CH4 emissions were, in general, about 10-fold higher at 27°C compared with 14°C but only after 15 weeks of storage. Urinary N losses were highest with the barley diet and lowest with the maize diet. There was a trend towards similar differences in N losses from the slurry of these cows (significant at 14°C). However, contrary to CH4, slurry-N emissions seemed to be temperature-independent. In conclusion, energetically balanced diets proved to be widely equivalent in their emission potential when combining animal and their slurry, this even at a clearly differing forage : concentrate ratio. The variation in CH4 emission from slurry stored shortly or at cold temperature for 15 weeks was of low importance as such conditions did not support methanogenesis in slurry anyway.

Effects of food intake (FI) and ad libitum food intake capacity (FIC) were investigated in 438 pigs fed in seven batches. Batches 1 to 6 consisted of barrows and batch 7 of gilts. Restrictedly fed animals had one to three ad libitum fed litter mates. In batches 6 and 7, animals were fed ad libitum until 48 kg live weight. Thereafter, two-thirds of the animals were fed according to a fixed weight scale. FIC is considered as a trait of the animal, independent of its actual FI. With ad libitum feeding FIC can be measured directly, with restricted feeding FIC has to be estimated.

Two methods of estimating average FIC from about 27 to 107 kg live weight were applied. The first method consisted of assigning to each restrictedly fed animal the average FI of one to three ad libitum fed litter mates. The second method was applied in batches 6 and 7 only and consisted of estimating FIC with multiple regression based on individual 'ad libitum performance' in the first part of the growing period.

Effects of FI and FIC on daily gain, food conversion ratio, backfat thickness, lean tissue proportion, fatty tissue proportion, lean tissue growth rate, fatty tissue growth rate and lean tissue food conversion were investigated. FI had significant effects on each trait, except on lean tissue food conversion. FIC had significant effects on body composition traits, but not on daily gain and food conversion ratio.

Irrespective of the method used to estimate FIC, results showed that animals with a higher FIC produced more fat and less lean from the same amount of food than animals with a lower FIC. It was suggested that the partition of food energy between energy for maintenance, protein deposition and fat deposition is associated with FIC. The findings confirmed that selection for leaner and more efficient pigs may result in animals with lower FIC, irrespective of the feeding regimen during performance testing.

Deterioration of the environment in which piglets are housed after weaning induces a moderate inflammatory response and modifies tryptophan (Trp) metabolism that can, in turn, decrease Trp availability for growth. We hypothesised that a Trp supply above the current recommendations may be required to preserve Trp availability and to maximise the growth of pigs suffering from moderate inflammation. The aim of this experiment was to compare growth performance and plasma concentrations of Trp and some of its metabolites in piglets, suffering or not from moderate inflammation, when they were fed diets containing graded levels of standardised ileal digestible (SID) Trp, obtained with the addition of crystalline l-Trp to the same basal diet (15%, 18%, 21% or 24%, relative to SID lysine). Differences in inflammatory status were obtained by housing the pigs under different sanitary conditions. Forty blocks of four littermate piglets each were selected and weaned at 4 weeks of age. The experimental design consisted of a split plot where the housing conditions (moderate inflammation v. control) were used as the main plot and dietary Trp content as the subplot. Body weight gain and feed intake were recorded 3, 5 and 7 weeks after weaning. Blood was sampled 13, 36 and 43 days after weaning to measure plasma concentrations of Trp, kynurenine and nicotinamide (i.e. two metabolites of Trp catabolism) and haptoglobin, a major acute phase protein in pigs. There was no interaction between dietary Trp and inflammatory status, irrespective of the response criterion. Compared with control pigs, pigs housed in poor housing conditions consumed less feed (P < 0.0001), had a lower growth rate (P < 0.001), higher plasma concentrations of haptoglobin (P < 0.05) and lower concentrations of plasma Trp irrespective of the Trp content in the diet. Increasing the Trp content in the diet improved feed intake (P < 0.05), growth rate and feed/gain (P < 0.05), but did not prevent the deterioration of performance induced by moderate inflammation because of poor housing conditions. The results of this study suggest that an inflammatory response caused by poor housing sanitary conditions altered Trp metabolism and growth performance, but this was not prevented by additional dietary crystalline l-Trp.

Dairy cow mortality is an important animal welfare issue that also causes financial losses. The objective of this study was to identify farm characteristics and herd management practices associated with high on-farm cow mortality in Swedish dairy herds. A postal questionnaire was sent to farmers that had either high or low mortality rates for 3 consecutive years. The questionnaire consisted of five sections: ‘About the farm’, ‘Milking and housing’, ‘Feeding’, ‘Routines’ and ‘Lame and sick cows’. A total of 145 questionnaires were returned (response rate=33%). Ten of the 77 characteristics investigated met the inclusion criteria for multivariable analysis. The final logistic regression model included: herd size, breed, use of natural service bull, bedding improvement frequency and pasture system. Herds with Swedish Holstein as the predominant breed (odds ratio (OR) 22.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.2 to 101.8) or with mixed breeds (OR 5.5, 95% CI 1.7 to 17.5) had a greater risk of being high mortality herds than herds that were predominantly Swedish Red (OR 1). Herds larger than 100 cows (OR 19.6, 95% CI 3.5 to 110.4) and herds with 50 to 99 cows (OR 13.8, 95% CI 3.2 to 60.6) had greater risk of mortality than herds numbering 35 to 50 cows (OR 1). Being a high mortality herd was also associated with having cows on exercise lots during the summer season (OR 3.6, 95% CI 1.3 to 9.9) compared with on pasture. A missing answer on the question of bedding improvement frequency was associated with high mortality herds. Overall, this study suggests that characteristics that are related to intensification of the dairy industry are also associated with high on-farm mortality of dairy cows.

Customized sire selection indices were developed for Australian dairy bulls in order to promote more objective use of estimated breeding values in commercial breeding programmes. It was assumed that the breeding goal for commercial dairy farmers is the profitability of a bull's progeny. Seven characteristics of the progeny were identified as having a major impact on profitability and were included in the breeding objective: milk, fat and protein yield, survival, body weight, milking speed and temperament. Traits in the selection indices used to predict profit were milk, fat and protein yield, survival, milking speed, temperament, size, overall type and fore teat placement. Size was included because of its correlation with body weight, and overall type and front teat placement because of their correlation with survival. To avoid double counting the benefits of milk production traits, temperament and milking speed, the survival trait in the objective was defined as survival independent of voluntary culling for these traits. Customization of the breeding objective was achieved by adjusting the economic weights for traits in the objective to take account of important characteristics of farmers' herds, the milk payment system under which they operate and make allowance for their own value judgements. An assessment of the impact of customization suggested that, even though there is a wide range in the economic weights that are applicable in different areas of Australia, there would be little loss of efficiency in using a single national index. However, customization is still believed to be desirable given that it is likely that a substantial proportion offarmers will be reluctant to use a national index, especially in those states which have quotas and focus on the liquid milk market. The algorithms described in the paper have been incorporated into a user-friendly microcomputer program called $electabull which is now commercially available to farmers.

Fat quality, in particular, firmness is a main contributor to meat appearance, shelf life, taste, and human health. The current study was conducted to examine the fluctuation and criteria of porcine fat firmness. Several physiochemical methods were performed on 237 porcine perirenal fat samples that were obtained randomly from a commercial market. The relationship between perirenal fat and the middle subcutaneous fat layer was investigated to predict carcass fat quality. Each physiochemical property of the perirenal fat showed considerable variation as a 40-fold difference in firmness was observed between the most extreme samples. Differences between these extremes were 19°C in melting point, 0·0043 for refractive index, and 18 g per 100 g fatty acid methyl esters for saturated fatty acids (SFA) concentration. Strong curvilinear relationships were found between Instron and sensory firmness scores (R=0·90–0·96, no.=24). On the basis of these relationships, classification of the perirenal fats obtained from the commercial market was defined. Fats possessing firmness values of less than 7 N have undesirable fat quality, whereas fat samples with values greater than 16 N were not popular in the market. From these data, we conclude that fats of 7–16 N in firmness value were preferred by consumers. Firmness values of perirenal fat samples correlated significantly with the stearic acid (C18:0) and SFA concentrations of samples of the middle subcutaneous fat layer (r=0·68, 0·57, P<0·01). These results indicate that there are wide fluctuations in the porcine fat quality, and that fats ranging in Instron firmness values between 7 and 16 N are most acceptable to consumers. And, subcutaneous fat may prove to be a valuable indicator of whole body pork fat quality.

Responses to four generations of divergent selection in pigs for lean growth rate (LGS) with restricted feeding were studied. The selection criterion was designed to obtain equal correlated responses in growth rate and carcass lean content, measured in phenotypic s.d. Animals were to be performance tested in individual pens with a mean starting weight of 30 kg for a period of 84 days. Daily food intake was equal to 0·75 gig of the daily food intake for pigs offered food ad-libitum. In the high, low and control lines, there ivere 1250 Large White-Edinburgh (LW) pigs and 875 British Landrace-Wye (LR) pigs. Each selection line consisted of 10 sires and 20 dams, with a generation interval ofl year.

After four generations of selection, cumulative selection differentials were 5·9 and 4·8 phenotypic s.d. for LW and LR populations, with similar responses, 1·8 (s.e. 0·17) phenotypic s.d. Mean weight at the end of test, growth rate and backfat depths at the shoulder, mid back and loin were 89 kg, 712 g/day, 26,13 and 13 mm for LW and for LR pigs were 87 kg, 683 g/day, 28,10 and 10 mm. High line pigs were heavier at the end of test (4·3 (s.e.d. 1·4) kg and 4·0 (s.e.d. 1·6) kg) for LW and LR populations, with corresponding responses in growth rate (54 (s.e.d. 16) g/day and 47 (s.e.d. 18) g/day). Responses in the three backfat depths were −4·1 (s.e.d. 1·2) mm, −2·6 (s.e.d. 0·7) mm and −2·9 (s.e.d. 0·7) mm for LW and −2·2 (s.e.d. 0·05) mm, −2·2 (s.e.d. 0·4) mm and −2·4 (s.e.d. 0·5) mm for LR populations. Responses in weight off test and backfat depths were symmetric about the control lines.

Heritabilities for LGS were 0·34 and 0·28 (s.e.d. 0·5) for the LW and LR populations, when estimated by residual maximum likelihood. Common environmental effects for LGS were 0·11 (s.e. 0·03) for LW and 0·17 (s.e. 0·04) for LR. Heritabilities for growth rate and average backfat depth were similar for LW and LR populations (0·17 and 0·29, s.e. 0·05), as were common environmental effects (0·10 s.e. 0·04). Average phenotypic and genetic correlations between growth rate and backfat, for LW and LR populations, were small (0·15 (s.e. 0·03) and −0·06 (s.e. 0·16), respectively).

Responses to selection and genetic parameter estimates demonstrate that there is substantial genetic variation in growth and fat deposition when pigs are performance tested on restricted feeding.

Fourteen adult ewes from each of three breeds, Karagouniko (K), Serres (S) and Chios (C), were maintained, barren, as a single flock at Diavata (latitude 40·5°N) for 2 years. Oestrus was checked twice daily by vasectomized rams for 17 months from April 1979. For K, S and C ewes, respectively, the mean dates of onset were 7 August (s.e. 6·5), 31 July (s.e. 8·2) and 28 July (s.e. 7·3) (P < 0-05) and the spread of first oestrus extended to 100, 94 and 95 days, respectively. Over all breeds, the dates of first oestrus ranged from 23 May to 19 September. Mean dates of last oestrus were 16 April (s.e. 8·5), 5 April (s.e. 9·5) and 20 May (s.e. 7·0) (P > 0·01) and the mean durations of the breeding period were 253 (s.e. 11·0), 247 (s.e. 12·2) and 301 (s.e. 10·2) days, respectively (P > 0·01). In the second season, the mean dates of first oestrus were 4 September (s.e. 2·4), 28 August (s.e. 5·1) and 25 July (s.e. 6·2), respectively (P < 0·01).

Groups of wether lambs were fed on four concentrate diets, from a live weight (LW) of about 25 kg until they had grown to about 50 kg, when they were killed, minced and analysed. A fifth group was killed at the start of the trial to provide data on their initial composition. The dietary treatments were identical except in their concentrations of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and supplied, with some approximations: (A) 0·75 times the requirements for Ca and P estimated according to the recommendations of the AFRC Technical Committee on Responses to Nutrients (TCORN, 1990); (B) a close match to the estimated requirements for both elements; (C) 1·5 times the estimated requirements for both elements; (D) 1·5 times the Ca requirement and 0·75 times the P requirement.

The retentions of Ca and P in the lambs were closely similar with diets B and C (6·8 and 7·3 g Ca per kg LW and 4·1 and 4·5 g P per kg LW) and significantly lower with diet A (4·8 g Ca and 3·0 g P per kg LW) and diet D (5·0 g Ca and 2·7 g P per kg LW). Parallel differences in response to diet were evident in the composition of the metacarpi. Plasma Ca and P concentrations showed no significant differences between the dietary treatments A, B and C, but plasma P concentrations were markedly depressed with lambs on diet D and plasma Ca concentrations were elevated in this group. Rumen P concentrations were also markedly lower in lambs on diet D and their food intakes and growth rates were lower than in lambs in other groups. The results indicate that Ca and P retentions were not increased by feeding these elements in excess of their estimated requirements and were reduced when Ca and P or P alone was reduced proportionately to about 0·75 times requirement. The data are in accord with the TCORN recommendations and suggests that they provide a satisfactory basis for defining Ca and P requirements for growing lambs.
