Heat stress is a major problem for dairy cows in hot climates, thus coping strategies are essential. This study evaluated the effects of increasing diet fermentability on intake, total tract digestibility, ruminal pH and volatile fatty acids (VFA) profile, blood metabolite profile and milk production and composition of lactating dairy cows managed under conditions of ambient heat stress. Nine multiparous cows (650 ± 56 kg BW; mean ± SD) averaging 102 ± 13 days in milk and producing 54 ± 6 kg/day were randomly assigned to a triplicate 3 × 3 Latin square. During each 21-day period, cows were offered one of three total mixed rations that varied in diet fermentability. The three levels of diet fermentability were achieved by increasing the proportion of pellets containing ground wheat and barley in the dietary DM from 11.7% (low), to 23.3% (moderate), and 35.0% (high) by replacing ground corn grain. Each period had 14 day of adaptation and 7 day of sampling. The ambient temperature–humidity index ( ≥ 72) indicated that the cows were in heat stress almost the entire duration of the study. Also, rectal temperature of cows was elevated at 39.2°C, another indication of heat stress. Increasing diet fermentability linearly decreased dry matter intake (22.8, 22.5, 21.8 kg/day for low, moderate and high, respectively; P ≤ 0.05) but increased non-fibre carbohydrate digestibility (P ≤ 0.05) and tended to increase digestibility of DM (P = 0.10) and crude protein (P = 0.06). As a result, the intake of digestible DM was not affected by the treatments. The production of 3.5% fat corrected milk (32.6, 33.7, and 31.5 kg/day) was quadratically (P ≤ 0.05) affected by diet fermentability with lower production for the high diet compared with the other two, which were similar. Rumen pH (ruminocentesis) and proportions of butyrate and isovalerate linearly decreased whereas propionate proportion linearly increased with increasing diet fermentability (P ≤ 0.05). The rumen concentration of NH3-N (11.0, 9.0, and 8.7 mg/dL) and blood concentration of urea linearly decreased with increasing diet fermentability (P ≤ 0.05). The activity of alkaline phosphatase increased (65.1, 83.2, and 84.9 U/l) and concentration of malondialdehyde decreased (2.39, 1.90 and 1.87 µmol/l) linearly with increasing diet fermentability (P ≤ 0.05), which indicated possible attenuation of the effects of oxidative stress with increasing diet fermentability. Overall, a modest increase of diet fermentability improved nitrogen metabolism, milk protein production and oxidative stress of heat-stressed dairy cows, but a further increase in diet fermentability decreased milk yield.

Intensive fattening of late-maturing breeds on concrete or rubberized slatted floors is the prevalent beef production system in mainland Europe. The rationale behind this study is that specific beef breeds with different slaughter weights might have a diverse response to different flooring systems. The study aimed at assessing whether growth performance, health, behaviour and claw condition of two beef breeds, Charolais (CH) and Limousine (LIM), would be affected by their housing on concrete (CS) or rubber-covered (RCS) fully slatted floor. A total of 228 CH (116 on CS; 112 on RCS) and 115 LIM (57 on CS; 58 on RCS) were housed in four and two commercial farms, respectively, in groups of 9.0 ± 2.1 animals/pen with an average space allowance of 3.1 ± 0.2 m2. Draining gaps of CS and RCS pens were 16.9 ± 1.7% and 11.6 ± 1.2% of the total surface, respectively. Bulls of both breeds had similar initial body weight (429.4 ± 31.5 kg for CH; 369.6 ± 31.7 kg for LIM), and they were slaughtered when they reached suitable finishing. Charolais had a higher final body weight (BW) than LIM (750.8 ± 8.6 v. 613.7 ± 10.9 kg; P < 0.01), and bulls of both breeds on RCS had higher average daily gain than on CS (1.47 ± 0.02 v. 1.39 ± 0.02 kg/day; P < 0.05). The percentage of bulls early culled or treated for locomotor disorders were reduced by RCS only for LIM, while RCS tended to prevent the occurrence of bursitis for both breeds. During two 8-h behavioural observations, bulls on RCS performed more head butt/displacements and chases than on CS, and they reduced the frequency of abnormal lying down events. The use of RCS increased mounts’ frequency only in LIM, while its reduced drainage capacity impaired only the cleanliness of CH. Postmortem hoof inspection showed longer claw dorsal wall and diagonal lengths, and sharper toe angles for CH on RCS than LIM on both floors. Results of this study point out that fully slatted floors, regardless of being rubberized or not, are not suitable for bulls finished at a final BW above 700 kg due to their detrimental effects on health and welfare. The use of RCS could be recommended as an alternative to CS only if bulls are slaughtered at a lower final BW (around 600 kg), like in the case of LIM breed.

A study was conducted to evaluate the main effects of dietary nitrate adaptation by cattle and alfalfa cell wall to starch ratio in in vitro substrates on nitrate disappearance and nitrite and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations, as well as hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) accumulations. Rumen fluid from steers fed diets containing urea or nitrate was added into in vitro incubations containing sodium nitrate as the sole nitrogen source and 20 cell wall : 80 starch or 80 cell wall : 20 starch as the carbohydrate source. The results showed that during 24 h incubation, rumen fluid inoculums from steers adapted to dietary nitrate resulted in more rapid nitrate disappearance by 6 h of incubation (P < 0.01), no significant effect on nitrite concentration and diminished CH4 accumulation (P < 0.05). Cell wall to starch ratio did not affect nitrate disappearance, CH4 accumulation and total VFA concentration. The higher cell wall ratio had the lower total gas production and H2 concentration (P < 0.05). Ammonia-N (NH3-N) concentration increased because of adaptation of donors to nitrate feeding (P < 0.05). Nitrate adaptation did not alter total VFA concentration, but increased acetate, and decreased propionate and butyrate molar proportions (P < 0.01).

Multielemental stable isotope ratio (SIR) analysis was used in lamb plasma, erythrocytes and muscle to detect the switch from a pasture- to a concentrate-based diet, with the aim of verifying the possibility to trace the change of feeding in animal tissues. During 89 days of experimental feeding, lambs were subjected to four dietary treatments: pasture (P), pasture followed by concentrate in the stall for either 14 days (P-S14) or 37 days (P-S37) or concentrate in the stall (S). Pasture and concentrate diets comprised C3 plants only and had different values of 13C/12C, 18O/16O, 2H/1H and 34S/32S ratios. Muscle 13C/12C and 34S/32S and plasma 13C/12C and 18O/16O ratios in P, P-S14 and P-S37 lambs were significantly different. A multivariate analytical approach revealed that 13C/12C and 18O/16O ratios in plasma were the most powerful variables for the discrimination among the dietary treatments.

A consequence of increasing litter size in sheep is that a portion of the lambs have to be reared artificially. Detailed information about the pattern of milk consumption of artificially reared lambs would help improve their management. The purpose of this study is to describe the individual and group feeding behaviour of 94 Romane artificially reared lambs from 5 to 28 days of age using an electronic automatic lamb feeder. Animals were located in four pens of 8 to 15 lambs of similar age with one teat per pen. They were fed ad libitum. In our experimental situation (group rearing, continuous lightning) on average a lamb made 1.4±0.7 visits to the teat per meal and 9.5±3 meals per day. Mean meal duration was 247±158 s and the mean daily time spent feeding was 38±25 min. The mean quantity of milk intake was 176±132 ml per meal and 1.68±0.8 l per day. With age, the number of daily meals and their duration decreased while the quantity of milk consumed per meal and per day increased. Females tended to make more visits to the teat per meal and perform more meals per day but their milk consumption per meal was lower. The feed conversion ratio was 1.36±0.2. Synchrony in feeding (group meal) was estimated as the percentage of lambs that wanted to access the teat within the same short period (relative group meal size). On average 65% of lambs in the pen wanted to access the teat within the same period, but for 35% of group meals the relative group meal size was >90%. There was no consistency in the order in which lambs accessed the teat during a group meal. Our evaluation suggested that electronic automatic lamb feeders are tools that can provide, on a large scale, data describing the feeding behaviour of artificially reared lambs. It is then possible to study factors influencing these traits in order to improve the outcome of artificially reared lambs.

A roughage begins to be processed as soon as it is cut, receives further processing during preservation and possibly more after it has been preserved. At each stage, the processing has a potential or an actual effect on the nutritive value of the feed, but in this review we shall concern ourselves solely with processes applied after preservation has taken place. Roughages are processed mainly with the intention of increasing their energy value and their acceptability to the animal (although there may be other nutritional aims such as reducing the solubility of protein, or non-nutritional aims such as facilitating transportation or storage). Most of these processes are mechanical, but some—such as heat treatment—are better classified as physical and others —such as delignification with sodium hydroxide—are chemical.

In this study, a video-based infrared camera (IRC) was investigated as a tool to monitor the body temperature of calves. Body surface temperatures were measured contactless using videos from an IRC fixed at a certain location in the calf feeder. The body surface temperatures were analysed retrospectively at three larger areas: the head area (in front of the forehead), the body area (behind forehead) and the area of the entire animal. The rectal temperature served as a reference temperature and was measured with a digital thermometer at the corresponding time point. A total of nine calves (Holstein-Friesians, 8 to 35 weeks old) were examined. The average maximum temperatures of the area of the entire animal (mean±SD: 37.66±0.90°C) and the head area (37.64±0.86°C) were always higher than that of the body area (36.75±1.06°C). The temperatures of the head area and of the entire animal were very similar. However, the maximum temperatures as measured using IRC increased with an increase in calf rectal temperature. The maximum temperatures of each video picture for the entire visible body area of the calves appeared to be sufficient to measure the superficial body temperature. The advantage of the video-based IRC over conventional IR single-picture cameras is that more than one picture per animal can be analysed in a short period of time. This technique provides more data for analysis. Thus, this system shows potential as an indicator for continuous temperature measurements in calves.

Previous research has shown that supplementing the diet of growing lambs with urea enhances their ability to withstand gastrointestinal infection with the nematode Haemonchus contortus. This study compared lambs given two different amounts (χ 1 and χ 1·5) of the same urea-supplemented diet. One dietary allowance was sufficient to allow uninfected lambs to gain approximately 400 g/week without adverse clinical signs. In contrast half of the H. contortus infected lambs on this dietary allowance had to be humanely killed before the end of the experiment due to severe anaemia and anorexia. All infected lambs on this dietary allowance showed decreased mean red cell volumes and decreased plasma albumin concentrations indicating inadequate replacement of red blood cells and plasma proteins lost during the infection. The remaining lambs were offered proportionately 0·5 more of the same dietary allowance. Among lambs on this dietary allowance, there were very few differences between uninfected and infected sheep in clinical signs and growth rate. Therefore, dietary allowances that are adequate for uninfected lambs are not necessarily sufficient for infected lambs. As nearly all grazing lambs are infected with nematodes, dietary recommendations should take parasitic infection and its nutritional demands into account.

The present paper discusses the results of a trial study, which was carried out to demonstrate the potential beneficial effects of virginiamycin (VM) on sow and litter performance. VM was added to the sow food at the levels of 0, 20 and 40 mg/kg, for a period of two breeding cycles, covering pregnancy and lactation. VM supplementation of the sow food improved sow performance by: (i) decreasing sow weight loss from farrowing to weaning (first period: 8·78 v. 3·54 v. 2·88 kg, P < 0·05; second period: 8·98 v. 3·93 v. 2·32 kg, P < 0·05), (ii) decreasing the duration of the reproductive cycle (first period: 154·5 v. 152·2 v. 151·2 days, P < 0·05; second period: 153·8 v. 151·5 v. 250·6 days, P < 0·05) and (in) increasing milk fat content (second period: 63·7 v. 81·3 v. 83·3 g/kg, P<0·05). Litter performance was also improved in terms of: (i) litter size at weaning (first period: 8·16 v. 8·88 v. 9·18, P < 0·05; second period: 8·98 v. 9·30 v. 9·76, P < 0·05), (ii) body weight at weaning (first period: 5·78 v. 6·29 v. 6·56 kg, P < 0·05; second period: 5·88 v. 6·38 v. 6·60 kg, P < 0·05), (Hi) average daily gain (first period: 172 v. 189 v. 197 g, P < 0·05; second period: 178 v. 292 v. 198 g, P < 0·05) and (iv) food conversion ratio (first period: 0·356 v. 0·331 v. 0·324, P < 0·05; second period: 0·363 v. 0·334 v. 0·325, P < 0·05). These beneficial effects of VM were more pronounced at the higher of the two inclusion levels.

1. Thirty Suffolk × Half bred lambs were slaughtered at the following ages: two twin lambs at birth and two singles and two twins at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 16 weeks of age.

2. The following weights were recorded: live-weight immediately before slaughter; and carcass, head, skin, feet, alimentary tract, heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and trachea, and blood immediately afterwards.

3. The alimentary tract was emptied and weighed in four separate parts; reticulo-rumen, omasum-abomasum, small intestine, large intestine.

4. The volumes of the reticulo-rumen and the omasum-abomasum were measured by immersing in water and filling the organs with water to 2 cm. pressure.

5. The in vitro digestive efficiency of rumen liquor from lambs of 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks of age was assessed.

6. Empty body weight was considered to be valuable in comparing animals of different ages or from different feeding regimes or at different times of the year because variations in gut ‘fill’ were eliminated.

7. There were no differences between singles and twins in the relationship of the fresh weights of the parts of the body to empty body weight, except that development of the liver and the blood was rather slower for singles.

8. Little evidence was found of a difference in rate of development of the alimentary tract between singles an d twins, although the log an d square root transformation suggested a possible difference in reticulo-rumen size in favour of twins, significant at the 5% level.

Twenty-eight New Zealand White X Californian doe rabbits weighing 3791±141 g were surgically fitted with a glass T-cannula at ileum level. Animals were given ad libitum access to either a casein-based diet (C) or a protein-free diet (PF). The only difference in the ingredient composition of the diets was the substitution of 160g/kg of maize starch by casein in the C diet. Animals were randomly allotted to each experimental diet. Seven rabbits per diet were not allowed to practice caecotrophy. The C diet resulted in higher food dry matter (DM) intake (DMI) (111-5 v. 51-5 g/day), food nitrogen intake (3-12 v. 0-20 g/day), ileal flow of DM (56-0 v. 23-8 g/day) and ileal flow of nitrogen (0-72 v. 0-24 g/day) but lower soft faeces DMI (21-7 v. 41-4 g/day) than the PF diet. A linear relationship between ileal endogenous nitrogen flow and total DMI was found for animals given the C but not for the PF diet. The ingestion ofC diet led to a higher (proportionately 0-41, on average), endogenous ileal amino acid flow than PF diet for all amino acids except for glycine. The ileal flow of glycine was proportionately 0-25 higher in animals given the PF diet than in animals given the C diet. The C diet resulted in higher content of nitrogen, threonine and proline in soft faeces than the PF diet. In contrast, the ingestion of the PF diet led to a higher content of lysine and methionine in soft faeces than the C diet. Within the C diet, animals practising caecotrophy showed higher ileal flow of DM (73-4 v. 56-0 g/day) and phenylalanine (0-834 v. 0-677 g/kg DMI) than animals not practising it. Caecotrophy led to a higher endogenous proportion of some of the most important limiting essential amino acids in rabbits, such as arginine, lysine, phenylalanine and threonine. In rabbits, the use of PF diets has limited practical application in the estimation of nitrogen endogenous losses as the low food DMI and the high soft faecesDMI leads to abnormal food: soft faeces intake ratio. Moreover, due to the important effect of caecotrophy on the amino acid composition of endogenous losses, it is important to correct the total amino acid content of the ileal chyme by the undigested amino acid residue coming from the soft faeces intake. This correction could be made, without the methodological complexity implied, by fitting animals with a wooden collar and thereby avoiding caecotrophy as in the present trial.

Changes in certain blood metabolites, serum progesterone concentration and pregnancy rate, were monitored for single- and twin-suckling cows in two experiments. In experiment 1, cows were managed to achieve condition scores at calving of 2·1 (low) and 3·1 (moderate). Subsequently, these animals were placed on a fixed level of energy intake (80 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per day) for 16 weeks. Post-partum diets contained differing amounts of digestible undegradable protein (DUP), but similar amounts of effective rumen degradable protein (ERDP). In experiment 2, all cows were fed to achieve a condition score at calving of around 2·75. These animals were subsequently placed on two levels of energy intake (80 MJ and 130 MJ ME per day) for 16 weeks. The diets providing these levels of energy intake also contained differing amounts of DUP. Pregnancies were established by embryo transfer following induced oestrus.

Cows in moderate body condition at calving subsequently had higher (P < 0·05) serum non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Cows on 130 MJ ME per day had lower serum NEFA concentrations than cows on 80 MJ ME per day. Cows given higher DUP diets had higher (P <0 ·05) serum NEFA concentrations when in negative energy balance and lower serum NEFA concentrations when close to energy equilibrium than cows given lower DUP diets. Twin-suckling cows had higher (P < 0·05) serum NEFA concentrations than single-suckling cows, but only during the first 3 weeks post partum. Plasma glucose concentrations were below 3 mmol/lfor twin-suckling cows until week 7 post partum when they became similar to the values for single-suckling cows. Serum D-3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations mirrored those of plasma glucose. Serum urea-nitrogen concentrations were high for twin-suckling cows on 80 MJ ME per day and single-suckling cows on 130 MJ ME per day.

Neither body condition at calving nor post-partum energy intake significantly influenced the time taken for cows to overcome anovulation nor did they significantly influence the proportion of cows which eventually resumed normal oestrous cyclicity. DUP concentration in the post-partum diet had no overall effect on the various measures of fertility assessed but thin cows at calving subsequently placed on the high DUP diet took longer to ovulate (55 days; P < 0·05) and had the lowest pregnancy rate (0·30). The post-partum anovulatory period was longer (P < 0·01) by 27 days in experiment 1 and 12 days in experiment 2 for hvin-suckling cows compared with singlesuckling cows. A lower proportion (P < 0·001) of twin-suckling cows regained oestrous cyclicity and became pregnant in experiment 1. Fertility traits were improved when twin-suckling cows were in moderate body condition at calving and/or offered 130 MJ ME per day during the post-partum period.

Ultrasonic measurements of fat thickness and m. longissimus depth 25 and 50 mm lateral to the mid line at the last rib and 100 mm caudally to the last rib were made, before slaughter, on 273 ram lambs using two probes: the Scanogram and Krautkramer. The lambs were from three strains: a meat-type sire strain and two fecund dam strains. They weighed on average 37·3 kg at scanning, (range 29·0 to 51·3 kg), well within the weight range over which Canada Al-grade lambs are marketed in Canada. Their carcasses contained on average 437 g trimmed boneless meat per kg (s.d. pooled within strain = 24·1 g/kg).

The precision with which the ultrasonic measurements combined with live weight at scanning predicted trimmed boneless meat (weight and proportion) was examined. Fat thickness measurements had no predictive value (P > 0·05). The residual standard deviations for the prediction of trimmed boneless meat in the half carcass (weight and proportion) from weight at scanning were 0·29 kg and 21·5 kg, respectively; the addition of the m. longissimus depth measurement reduced the residual standard deviations by 0·02 kg and 1·1 g/kg, respectively. The weight of trimmed boneless meat was predicted with more precision than the proportion of trimmed boneless meat. Strain, location of measurement site or type of instrument did not change the precision of prediction.

It is concluded that prediction of trimmed boneless meat in young ram lambs based on live animal ultrasonic measurements made with the Scanogram or Krautkramer lacks the level of precision necessary for practical application.

Copper concentrations were determined in whole blood, plasma and caeruloplasmin and calculated for red cells and non-caeruloplasmin copper in plasma in 215 female sheep, 9 months old, belonging to the Scottish Blackface, Cheviot and Welsh Mountain breeds of sheep and their crosses. Copper determinations were also made on red cells and plasma, and calculated for whole blood, of a contemporary group of 107 female sheep of the same breeds at the age of 4 years. Further, plasma copper concentrations were determined for these 107 sheep from samples taken on several occasions some years earlier.

Within breed, sheep of type Hb B had significantly higher levels of copper than sheep of type Hb A in whole blood and most of the blood components. The biggest differences were found in plasma and were 19 ng/100 ml for one group and 37 Jig/100 ml for the other. Type Hb AB sheep were intermediate in copper level. The differences in plasma copper level associated with Hb type were present and of similar magnitude at different ages, seasons and average flock levels of copper.

After adjustment for the effects of Hb type, breed differences in copper levels were significant for whole blood and all components but much less pronounced for red cells than for plasma. Copper levels in plasma and red cells were only moderately correlated (r = 0·23–0·40).

Combined evidence suggests the existence of a gene with a marked effect on copper level which is linked to the locus for Hb type.

Lactation curves are fitted to data as a preliminary to estimating summary statistics. Two widely quoted curves are atbe-ct (Wood, 1967) and a(1 - e-bt) - ct (Cobby and Le Du, 1978), each of which has three parameters. Restriction to either of these curves imposes limitations on the fit to the data and can result in biased estimation of summary statistics. Alternatively, lactation curves can be generated by the use of a non-parametric method which requires only weak assumptions about the signs of derivatives of the curves. Because the non-parametric curves are more flexible, estimates of summary statistics are less likely to be biased than those based on parametric models. Use of the non-parametric curves is particularly advantageous around the time of peak yield, where the curves of Wood and Cobby and Le Du are known to fit data poorly.

Coopworth sheep from the high and low backfat selection lines and from one random-bred line developed at Invermay, New Zealand, were used to examine the interaction between the degree offatness of sheep and a period of maintenance feeding (from 20 to 35 weeks of age), in terms of total fat, carcass lean tissue, bone and viscera weights, relative to the empty body weight measured in computer-aided tomography scans. A similar study was done for weights of subcutaneous, intermuscular and internal (abdominal) fat partitions relative to total fat weight. During two a d libitum feeding periods (front 10 to 20 and from 35 to 43 weeks of age) changes in the same components relative to the ‘whole’ (empty body weight or total fat, depending on the case) were expressed in allometric terms.

Only the allometric growth coefficient for total fat weight was significantly affected by the period of restricted feeding, decreasing after this period. No line or sex effect was observed on any growth coefficient. As a result, there were no changes in differences between treatments over the ad libitum feeding periods, with fat animals and females having significantly higher proportions of fat, while females also had a significantly lower proportion of intermuscular fat.

During maintenance feeding, line and sex differences in dissectible component weights did not change significantly, except in terms of intermuscular fat, with the males showing an increasingly larger proportion than the females.

1. Peck order position was assessed by aggressiveness scores for birds housed intensively on deep litter on the floor and in cages.

2. Relationships were shown between scores and egg weight, egg number and egg mass for the birds on the floor but not for the caged birds. The nature of the relationships found was discussed.

3. The correlation between egg weight and egg number was higher in the flock on the floor than in the caged flock. This appeared to be due to a significant positive correlation among the lowest scoring birds on the floor.

Genetic variances were estimated from different types of relatives for a data set of 19038 first lactation fat yield (FY) and fat concentration (FC) records. For FY, h2 estimates were 0·377, 0·322 and 0·377 from an animal model, a sire model and a model using only female relationships. The corresponding estimates for FC were 0·632, 0·628 and 0·610. Regarding sires with most progeny in the data set as levels of a fixed effect slightly increased h2 estimates, most likely through accounting for selection of proven sires. Statistical models were presented to account for heterogeneous genetic variances for males and females in the prediction of breeding values or in estimating variance components. Simultaneously estimating genetic variances for FY from paternal half-sibs, maternal half-sibs, and daughter-dam comparisons, resulted in heterogeneous genetic variance estimates from male v. female comparisons and similar variance estimates from mhs and dd comparisons. For FC, h2 estimates from different types of relatives were similar.

Dam-daughter comparisons provide 0·75 to 0·80 of the information on heritability from female relationships and provide 0·42 to 0·55 of the total information on heritability.

The work done, distance travelled and body temperature of five teams of oxen ploughing land for winter crops was measured continuously over a 5-h working day. On terraces in East Nepal the cattle worked at slow speeds (about 0·3 m/s). Daily work output was variable and depended on ground and soil conditions and on the man working the team. Estimated daily energy expenditure on working days in October and November was 1·25 to 1·46 × maintenance. Differences between teams were small. No noticeable change in performance occurred over the 5-h work, with the exception of one team which usually worked erratically over the last 2 h. Only one animal showed signs of heat stress during work, when its body temperature increased by 1·8 to 2°C, otherwise body temperature varied little (< 1°C) during work.

1. Data from 208 piglets in 24 litters were examined to evaluate the relationships of weights at 3 and 8 weeks with birth weight and milk consumption within litters, and with these and creep-feed consumption between litters.

2. Of the total variation in 3-week weight within litters, 39% was associated with variation in birth weight, 67% with variation in milk consumption to 3 weeks, and 80% with these two factors combined. Of the total variation in 8-week weight within litters, 30% was associated with variation in birth weight, 25% with variation in milk consumption to 8 weeks, 42% with these two factors combined and 45% with variation in 3-week weight.

Of the total variation in 3-week weight between litters, 6% was associated with variation in birth weight, 15% with variation in milk consumption to 3 weeks, and 18% with these two factors together. These values were all too low to be statistically significant, as were the equivalent relationships with 8-week weight. Of the total variation in 8-week weight between litters, 77 % was associated with variation in creep-feed consumption to 8 weeks, 70% with variation in 3-week weight, 85% with consumptions to 8 weeks of milk and creep-feed combined, and 89 % with creep-feed consumption to 8 weeks and 3-week weight combined.

4. The practical significance of these relationships is discussed.
