The effect of sex on the size and number of adipocytes and on the lipogenic enzyme activity in different fat depots in Lacha (L) and Rasa Aragonesa (RA) lambs was studied. Male and female L lambs were fed on ewe milk and were slaughtered at 25 and 24 days of age corresponding to 11·4 and 10·9 kg live weight (UN), respectively. Male and female RA lambs were weaned at 58 days (16·0 kg LW) and were then given concentrates and barley straw until slaughtered at 89 and 91 days of age corresponding to 24·5 and 23·1 kg LW, respectively. A number of parameters were studied in omental (OM), mesenteric (MES) and kidney knob and channel fat (KKCF) depots including the amount of fat, the number and size of adipocytes and the activity of the following enzymes: glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), fatty acid synthetase (FAS), glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and NADPmalate dehydrogenase (MD). In subcutaneous (SC) and intermuscular (IM) depots, all the former parameters except the adipocyte number were studied. Females of both breeds had higher amounts of adipose tissue than males in the internal fat depots (P < 0·05) as well as larger adipocytes, mainly in the KKCF (P < 0·05 andP < 0·001 for L and RA lambs, respectively) and OM (P < 0·05 in the RA lambs) depots. There were no differences between sexes in the number of adipocytes. The activity of the G3PDH enzyme was higher in females than in males in OM and SC depots (P < 0·01) in L lambs, and in KKCF, IM (P < 0·05), OM and MES (P < 0·001) depots in RA lambs. Thus, the sex effect on adiposity in both breeds studied involved a greater fattening of the females which was consistent with a greater hypertrophy and a higher G3PDH activity.

The daily voluntary food consumption (VFC), water intake and urinary excretion of water, sodium and potassium of eight sheep were studied before and after shearing. The extracellular volume of each sheep was measured twice before and three times after shearing. VFC was significantly higher for the first 3 weeks after shearing than for the 3 weeks immediately before shearing. There was a decreased excretion of Na in the urine and a smaller Na/K ratio for the first 2 weeks after shearing, although the extracellular volume was not significantly increased until 4 weeks after shearing. Within, but not between, the 3-week periods before and after shearing, there was a close linear relationship between VFC and water intake, the latter being significantly less for the same VFC after shearing. During weeks 4 and 5 after shearing, there was an increased loss of Na in the urine and a higher Na/K ratio, and the linear relationship between VFC and water intake was intermediate between that shown before and after shearing. The VFC of the sheep before shearing and in week 5 after shearing were similar.

The effect of acute exercise was studied in a group of 42 clinically healthy young Standardbred trotters. These trotters had been divided into four groups according to their age. Their ages were from 1.5 to 3 years. Three jugular venous blood samples were collected via venipuncture from each horse. These samples were collected while (1) at rest, (2) after the end of the exercise and (3) 30 min after the end of the exercise. Exercise showed a significant increase in plasma leptin concentration (3.8 ± 0.31 at rest v. 4.3 ± 0.37 just after exercise and 4.4 ± 0.47 ng/ml after a 30-min rest; ANOVA P < 0.05). The difference between values obtained 30 min after exercise and at rest was significantly greater in 1.5-year-old horses than in those aged 2.5 years (+1.3 ± 0.43 v. +0.1 ± 0.15 ng/ml; ANOVA P < 0.05). The mean plasma leptin concentration was higher in fillies than in colts (4.9 ± 0.47 v. 3.5 ± 0.36 ng/ml; ANOVA P < 0.05). A positive correlation between the plasma concentrations of leptin and triacylglycerides measured just after exercise was detected (r = 0.65). The acute exercise significantly increased the plasma concentration of ghrelin that was measured just after exercise (1255 ± 55.9 v. 1127 ± 54.2 pg/ml; ANOVA P < 0.05). The exercise-induced age-related changes in the plasma ghrelin concentration were significantly lower in 2.5-year-old trotters than in 1.5-year olds. To sum up, the changes in plasma leptin and ghrelin concentrations during bouts of exertion tend to decrease with age and/or training of Standardbred foals.

In experiment 1, three male calves of Vietnamese cattle and three maleVietnamese swamp buffalo calves were weaned after receiving colostrum and reared by bottle feeding of milk. During the 1st month the animal did not have access to solid food. Urine was collected to determine differences in endogenous excretion of purine between the two types of animal. After that they were given access to equal amount of solid food for 2 months to stimulate rumen development, urine was again collected to determine the differences in purine excretion. In experiment 2, the same animals were given milk mixed with purines in three treatments (0, 1·7 and 3·4 g/day). The same animals were used in experiment 3 for intravenous allantoin infusion, to test the effect of purines themselves introduced into the plasma.The results showed that in period 1 of experiment 1 there was no significant difference in purine excretion between the two types of animal. The excretion being 0·65 mmol/kg M 0·75 for cattle and 0·69 mmol/kg M 0·75for buffaloes calves, respectively. For period 2, after rumen development there were significant differences between two types of animal. The excretion from buffaloes (0·26 mmol/kg M0·75) being less than half that of cattle (0·69 mmol/kg M 0·75).In experiment 2 the regression of purine excretion mmol/day (y) was y=0·6279x+9·1496 for cattle calves and y=0·2618x+5·8594 for buffalo calves where x was the purine given.In experiment 3, from each mmol of allantoin infusion, the recovery was about 0·70 in cattle but only half (0·32) in buffaloes ( P<0·01).It is clearly shown that the difference in purine derivative excretion occur only after rumen development It is suggested that glomerular filtration rate may be lower in buffaloes than cattle leaving more time in the blood thus more time for recycling to the rumen and metabolized by bacteria or the permeability from the blood to the rumen is greater in buffaloes than cattle.

Leptin is a polypeptide hormone produced primarily by adipocytes. It has been implicated in the regulation of satiety and energy homeostasis. Leptin has been suggested to play a role in reproduction based on its involvement in the regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis via endocrine, paracrine and/or autocrine pathways. The aim of the present study was to localize the cellular distribution of leptin and the long isoform of leptin receptor (OB-Rb) genes in porcine ovarian antral follicles and to compare the expression levels of leptin and OB-Rb mRNAs in porcine granulosa cells (GC), theca interna (TIC) and theca externa (TEC) cells during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle and in early pregnancy. The expression of leptin and OB-Rb genes was detected in GC, TIC and TEC. Significantly higher levels of leptin gene expression in GC were observed during the mid- and late-luteal phases of the cycle than on days 30 to 32 of pregnancy. On days 14 to 16 of pregnancy, leptin mRNA expression was higher than that on days 14 to 16 of the cycle. The expression of the OB-Rb gene in GC and TEC increased during pregnancy in comparison with the analyzed luteal phases of the cycle. Our results validate the hypothesis that locally produced leptin plays a role in the regulation of porcine reproduction at the ovarian level and exerts a direct effect on porcine follicles. The differences in OB-Rb gene expression in porcine GC and theca cells also suggest that their sensitivity to leptin varies in the ovaries of pregnant and cyclic pigs.

Milk composition in Awassi sheep was determined in relation to time of milking, stage of lactation and age of ewe. About 80 ewes of the main flock of the Kraim Centre, were used. Fat, total solids and solids not fat proportions were not significantly affected by age of ewe, but they increased as stage of lactation advanced. With equal intervals of milking of 12 h, milk fat and total solids proportions were higher in the evening milk than in the morning milk although no differences between the morning and evening in the quantity of milk obtained were observed.

1. Four groups of diets made up with differing proportions of roughage and concentrates were each given ad lib. to 4 Blackhead Persian wether sheep. The four diets in each group contained approximately 4, 6, 8 and 10% crude protein. The distribution of nitrogen in the rumen at various times after feeding and the nitrogen balance of the sheep were measured.

2. Total N and ammoniacal N content of the rumen liquor were both closely related to the N content of the diet. Diurnal changes in the concentrations of these components were most marked with the diets which had the highest concentration of protein, and consisted of rapid increases after feeding followed by declines later in the day. Each group of diets produced characteristic patterns of change and these changes appeared to be related to the proportion of concentrates in the diet.

3. With sheep given poorly digested veldt grass, very low in protein, levels of ammonia in the rumen were unusually high. This effect was thought t o be due to the recycling of urea and its conversion to ammonia in the rumen.

4. The amounts of digestible N required by the sheep for N equilibrium differed between groups of diets. High apparent requirements of digestible N were associated with relatively high ruminal ammonia levels, but the latter were not considered to be the cause of high requirements.

5. On all groups of diets, sheep were in N equilibrium only when their intakes of total digestible nutrients (TDN) were adequate for maintenance. This indicates that the protein requirement for maintenance was a function of protein content and TDN content of the diet and the effect of these factors on voluntary intake of TDN.

The survival rates of Dorper, Red Maasai and crossbred lambs born over a period of 6 years at Diani Estate, Coast Province, Kenya were compared using the Cox mixed proportional hazards model with a random (frailty) term for sire. Of the 1785 lambs born, proportionately 0·44 died before they were 1 year old. Almost half of these deaths occurred before weaning; a third were associated with mis-mothering and a fifth with gastro-intestinal nematode parasite (endoparasite) infections. Half of the deaths post weaning were associated with endoparasite infections, predominantly Haemonchus contortus. The Red Maasai lambs had a lower risk of death than the Dorper lambs with a relative hazard of 0·27 pre-weaning and 0·25 post weaning. Other crosses and back crosses had relative hazards in between these values and 1; there was no evidence of heterosis. Survival rates were different among years and appeared to be associated to some degree with variations in rainfall. There were highly significant effects of both birth weight and weaning weight on survival. Body weight, together with packed red cell volume and faecal egg count, were also introduced into the proportional hazard model as time-varying covariates. All three variables had major influences on survival. The risk of death over the following month in animals individually treated with an anthelmintic drug pre weaning was reduced by 0·61 compared with those not treated. The sire frailty variance estimate was similar to its standard error pre-weaning but larger post weaning. When adjusted for lamb body weight the sire variance post weaning increased to three times its standard error.

In two experiments Red Danish dairy calves of both sexes, and of two lines selected for high (H) and low (L) milk fat production (proportional difference 0·22), were tested at 4 months and again at 10 months of age for their growth hormone (GH) release following intravenous administration of either thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH, experiment 1: 0·15 μig/kg live weight, no. = 16 H + 10 L) or arginine hydrochloride (ARG, experiment 2: 0·10 g/kg live weight, no. = 19 H + 10 L). The GH response was measured in serial blood samples for 0·5 h prior to and for 2 h following intravenous injections. The response peak, measured as the geometric mean of the 5-, 10- and 15-min samples following TRH was greater in the line selected for high yield, at 10 months (H, 42·4 μg/l; L, 20·6 μig/l; P < 0.01) but not at 4 months of age (H, 25·4 μg/l; L, 18·6 μg/l; P > 0·05). The response peak following arginine measured in the 20-, 30- and 45-min samples was smaller than the peak following TRH and did not differ between selection lines, although there was a tendency for H calves to have a larger release at 10 months of age. After puberty (10 months) male calves responded more to both secretagogues than females, while there was no difference before puberty (4 months). These results suggest that GH release may be useful as a juvenile predictor of dairy merit, but results need to be confirmed in further and larger studies.

The European Union (EU) Broiler Directive (2007/43/EC) is unique amongst current EU Directives, which address animal welfare, in that it uses outcome data collected at abattoirs and on farm to monitor on-farm broiler welfare and vary the maximum permitted stocking density on farm. In this study, we describe how, by bringing together personnel from the competent authorities in 22 member states (MSs) who have responsibility for implementing the Directive, and engaging in exchange of information and technical methods regarding the Broiler Directive, it has been possible to identify differences in approach with regard to ‘what data is being collected, and by whom’ across EU MSs. Online questionnaires and workshop exercises enabled us to identify priority areas for knowledge transfer and training. For example, foot pad dermatitis, hock burn, dead on arrival and total rejections (birds rejected as unfit for human consumption by the meat inspection staff at slaughter) were identified by the MSs as measures of medium-to-low priority in terms of knowledge transfer because there are assessment methods for these conditions that are already well accepted by competent authorities. On the other hand, breast lesions, cellulitis, emaciation, joint lesions, respiratory problems, scratches, wing fractures and a number of environmental measures were identified as having high priority in terms of knowledge transfer. The study identified that there is significant variability in the stage of implementation between MSs, and responses from the participating MSs indicated that sharing of guidance and technical information between MSs may be of value in the future set-up process for those MSs engaged in implementation of the Directive.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of breed and other factors (age, sex and season) on copper (Cu) accumulation by calves reared in a region in north-west Spain where pig slurry is widely used for slurry fertilization, and where cattle typically have hepatic Cu concentrations above the generally accepted safe-adequate levels. In December 2000 and August 2001, paired liver and blood samples were obtained at slaughter from 532 male and female Galician Blond, Holstein-Friesian and Galician Blond×Holstein-Friesian calves, aged between 6 and 10 months, from 434 different farms. Samples were acid-digested and Cu concentrations determined by ICP-OES. Holstein-Friesian calves showed significantly higher mean Cu concentrations both in the liver (80·6 mg/kg fresh weight) and blood (0·891 mg/l) than Galician Blond calves (50·4 mg/kg and 0·748 mg/l respectively) and crosses between the two breeds (61·3 mg/kg and 0·829 mg/l respectively). Holstein-Friesian was the breed with the highest percentage (42%) of calves with hepatic Cu concentrations above safe-adequate levels (25 to 100 mg/kg fresh weight) and Galician Blond the breed with the highest proportion (29%) of hypocupraemia during the winter sampling. Considering all breeds, hepatic Cu levels were higher in males (63·8 mg/kg) than in females (53·5 mg/kg) and significantly increased with age in summer. A significant three-way breed×sex×age interaction was observed for liver Cu but this may be attributable to the small number of animals in some groups, having a confounding effect on the analysis. A significant sex×age×season interaction was also observed which could indicate greater male dominance in summer, so that they consume more forage (and thus more Cu) than females. Calves slaughtered in winter showed significantly lower mean blood Cu concentration (0·703 mg/l) than calves slaughtered in summer (0·940 mg/l).

Thirty-four mature ewes (17 rearing twins and 17 rearing singles) were used to examine the effect of litter size on herbage intake at pasture by ewes over the course of lactation; intake by their lambs during weeks 13 to 15 of lactation was also evaluated. Daily organic matter intake (OMI) was estimated using the n-alkane technique. Ewes and lambs rotationally grazed 19 × 0·15-ha paddocks during the experimental period which extended from week 2 of lactation to weaning at week 15 of lactation. Sward conditions were maintained steady throughout with daily OM allowance per ewe varying between 4·6 and 5·7 kg and dry matter digestibility between 763 and 858 g/kg DM.

Throughout lactation OMI and OMI per kg body weight were higher for twin-rearing ewes (P < 0·05) than for ewes rearing singles: 2·50 and 2·26 kg/day, and 38 and 32 g/kg per day, respectively. Intake reached a maximum on weeks 6 to 7 of lactation. From weeks 13 to 15 of lactation, OMI and OMI per kg body weight for single- and twin-reared lambs were 1·09 and 1·14 kg/day, and 31 and 36 g/kg per day, respectively.

The combined food intake per dam-offspring unit for weeks 13 to 14 of lactation for a ewe plus her single lamb was 2·8 kg OM per day compared with 4·3 kg OM per day for a ewe plus her two lambs. The repeatability of average weekly intake by ewes was 0·39 over the course of lactation and 0·40 for lambs over the 13 to 15 week period. Repeatability estimates for ewes increased slightly when data from weeks 3 to 7 and weeks 13 to 14 was analysed separately (0·42 and 0·53, respectively).

The carcasses of 15 ram and 15 ewe lambs of the Dorset Down breed, weight range 12 to 23 kg, were separated into individual muscles, bones and fat depots.

At the same carcass weight (16-8 kg) the ram lambs contained 41 g more muscle per kg, but there were few important differences between sexes in individual muscle weights; 65 of the 72 muscles differed in weight by less than 10 g.

The distribution of total muscle weight between eight anatomical groupings differed significantly between the sexes; ewes had proportionately more muscle in the proximal pelvic limb (8 g/kg) and less in the neck (7 g/kg) and distal thoracic limb (1 g/kg). Despite these small differences in muscle-weight distribution in higher-valued joints in favour of the ewe lambs, each of their joints contained less muscle than those of ram lambs.

In these lambs, reared under commercial conditions in the United Kingdom, there were no signs of gross morphological differences which could result in their disqualification for the Variable Premium of the European Economic Community Sheepmeat Regime. In particular the m. splenius cervicus was a very small proportion of total muscle in both sexes (1·5 and 2·5 g/kg for ewe and ram respectively).

In three trials, each involving 48 individually-fed pigs grown from 20 to 90 kg live weight, the value of virginiamycin as a performance-promoter either alone or together with 250 mg Cu/kg diet was examined. Both copper and virginiamycin on their own gave significant, although small, improvements in performance and the results suggested that there can be a degree of additive action between the two materials when both are added to the diet.

Major nutrient and amino acid digestibilities were evaluated in experiments with dogs (Canis familiaris), blue foxes (Alopex lagopus) and mink (Mustela vison) using seven extruded diets containing different protein sources. Four dogs (German shepherd), four blue foxes and four mink were offered each of the experimental diets to determine apparent total tract digestibility. Average digestibility of crude protein (CP) in blue foxes and mink was similar, and lower than the corresponding value in dogs (0·834 and 0·831 v. 0·864) (P < 0·001). CP digestibility in blue foxes showed significant correlations with dogs and mink (P < 0·05), while no significant correlation was observed between dogs and mink. Average digestibility of most amino acids was significantly lower in blue foxes than in dogs (P < 0·001), whereas mink digested most essential amino acids at the same level as did dogs. Most non-essential amino acids were digested at a significantly lower rate in the mink than in the dog and the blue fox (P < 0·001). There were significant correlations in the digestibility of most amino acids between dogs and blue foxes, and between blue foxes and mink (P < 0·05). Correlations were significant between dogs and mink for the digestibility of most essential amino acids (P < 0·05) but not significant (P > 0·05) for several non-essential amino acids. Average digestibility of crude fat was high and similar among the species studied: 0·968, 0·967 and 0·959 in dogs, blue foxes and mink, respectively. Average digestibility of starch ranged from 0·971 in mink to 0·998 in dogs; significantly higher in dogs than in blue foxes and mink, and significantly higher in blue foxes than in mink (P < 0·001). It was concluded that digestibility determined with mink, blue foxes or dogs may be used to predict digestibilities in the other investigated species. However, both the characteristics of the protein sources as well as the individual amino acid studied will influence the difference in digestibility among the species.

An experiment was designed to determine whether combining a single injection of 125 μg prostaglandin F2α analogue (PGF) with a 5-day progestagen pessary treatment (PPT) would obviate the problem with refractory animals that occurs when randomly cycling ewes are synchronized with PGF alone. The efficacy of the combined treatment, in comparison with single and double dose PGF regimes, was also assessed.

A total of 210 ewes were used in this investigation conducted during the 1989 and 1990 breeding seasons. In both breeding seasons, 100% of the ewes treated with PGF combined with PPT were mated by fertile rams within a 3-day period, compared with 52·9% of ewes treated with a single injection PGF or 100% of ewes treated with two injections of PGF, 11-days apart. Returns to service for the three groups were 14·2%, 16·2% and 17·4%, respectively. There was no effect of treatment on lambing performance in 1989. However, in 1990 there were differences between groups in gestation length and birth weight, but these were attributable to enzootic abortion. The results demonstrate that PGF combined with PPT will produce levels of oestrous synchronization and fertility comparable with other methods.

Although breed substitution is a very common method of rapidly altering the characteristics of a livestock population, within-breed selection for lamb carcass characters is becoming more widely used in the terminal sire breeds in Britain. Such selection schemes require accurate and applicable genetic parameters for the carcass traits of interest. This paper reports a genetic analysis of 11 traits measured on 3592 lamb carcasses using a derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood technique. Because of the trial design it was possible to estimate the genetic parameters of the traits at comparable fat cover, carcass weight and age at slaughter, using appropriate within-subclass covariates.

Heritability estimates for muscle depth (0·23, s.e. 0·04), muscle width (0·32, s.e. 0·05), fat depth (0·31, s.e. 0·05), caliper fat (0·23, s.e. 0·04) and conformation (0·29, s.e. 0·05) were similar in the weight and age-corrected results. Heritabilities for fat cover (0·35, s.e. 0·05), daily carcass weight gain (0·63, s.e. 0·07), and leg conformation (0·44, s.e. 0·05) were higher with slaughter at fixed weight than at fixed age. The heritabilities of traits at comparable fat cover were similar to those at comparable age at slaughter with the exception of daily carcass weight gain, fat depth, caliper fat and leg conformation.

The different measures of fat were highly correlated with each other. Conformation was moderately correlated with external fat score, carcass length and muscle depth. Muscle depth was moderately correlated with carcass length. Differences were found between genetic correlations calculated at equal weight, a common point of comparison in breeding schemes, and equal fat cover, a common end-point for slaughter lambs.

Cow routines and behavioral responses are altered substantially following the installation of robot milking. The present study was designed to analyze the effect that switching from milking parlor to automatic milking system (AMS) had on the culling rate (due to various causes) of dairy cattle. For this purpose, culling records and causes for culling were tracked in 23 dairy farms in the Galicia region (NW Spain). The animals in these farms were monitored for 5 years. For the present study, that length of time was divided into three different stages, as follows: 2 years before switching from a milking parlor to AMS (stage 1), the 1st year following the implementation of AMS (stage 2) and the 2nd and 3rd years succeeding the implementation of AMS (stage 3). Cox models for survival analysis were used to estimate the time to culling due to different reasons during stage 1 in relation to stages 2 and 3. The data indicated that the risk of loss due to death or emergency slaughter decreased significantly following the installation of AMS. In contrast, the risk of culling due to low production, udder problems, infertility or lameness increased significantly. Low-production cows (such as cows in advanced lactation due to infertility) or sick cows (such as mastitic or lame cows) allegedly have a noticeable effect both on the performance and the amortization of the cost of AMS, which in turn would lead to a higher probability of elimination than in conventional systems.

Voluntary food intake, milk production and blood characteristics were measured in mares between the 3rd month before foaling and the first 5 weeks of lactation. The effect of breed during pregnancy was determined using 15 light mares and eight heavy mares (522 and 763 kg live weight (LW) after foaling respectively). The effect of parity was studied on light mares (seven were primiparous and eight were multiparous). In lactation, only four primiparous and four multiparous light mares were retained. Diet consisted of 900 g hay and 100 g concentrates per kg and was offered ad libitum. Voluntary food intake in pregnancy was higher for heavy mares than for light mares: 15·2 v. 10·3 kg dry matter (DM) daily. This difference was explained by differences in LW, since DM intake was the same when expressed as a fraction of LW or metabolic weight (M). Energy and nitrogen supply exceeded requirements, in the same way for light and heavy mares. No significant variations in blood measurements were observed between light and heavy mares, except for glucose. Primiparous mares ate less DM than multiparous mares in pregnancy: 9·7 v. 10·8 kg DM (P > 0·05), significantly so relative to LW and M. DM intake per kg LW or M depended on the parity. This difference had no effect on blood measurements, except for acetate. During lactation, no other differences in voluntary food intake were observed with regard to parity, whatever the week of lactation. Milk yield was higher for multiparous mares than for primiparous mares (16·6 v. 14·6 kg daily). Gross energy of milk varied according to a similar pattern, principally because of variations in fat concentration (20·2 v. 16·5 g/kg for multiparous and primiparous mares respectively). Energy balance was significantly more positive for multiparous than for primiparous mares.

The trial compared 50 purebred Canadian Holstein and 46 British Friesian steers. The cattle were reared on a grass/cereal system designed to achieve an overall target live-weight gain of 0·82 kg per day from weaning to slaughter at 18 months of age. The cattle, born i n September 1973, grazed during the summer of 1974 and were slaughtered out of yards from January to July 1975. Equal numbers of each breed were allocated at random to three slaughter weights (477, 500 and 523 kg live weight). The Meat and Livestock Commission measured and classified all carcasses. In addition, a sample was cut according to commercial specifications. There were no significant differences in slaughter age or live-weight gain between the breeds. A significant difference (P < 0·05) in killing-out percentage was found in favour of the British Friesian as was a small (4%) but highly significant difference (P < 0·001) in carcass gain.

The Canadian Holstein carcasses were considerably longer (P < 0·001) with less eye-muscle area (P < 0·001). The British Friesian carcasses contained 0·7% more saleable meat (P < 0·001) and 1% less bone (P < 0·01). There were no significant differences in fat trim.
