Twenty-four lactating British Friesian type cows were used in a four period, partially balanced, changeover design experiment to evaluate eight treatments consisting of four protein sources in the supplement (soya-bean meal, formaldehyde treated soya-bean meal, fish meal and a mixture supplying equal crude protein levels from fish and soya-bean meal (respective degradabilities of total supplement nitrogen (N) were 0·56, 0·37, 0·32 and 0·44), each offered in supplements formulated to contain 150 and 200 g crude protein per kg fresh weight in a 4 × 2 factorial design. All supplements were offered at 8·0 kg/day in addition to ad libitum access to a medium digestibility grass silage (digestible organic matter as proportion of dry matter (DM), 0·66); with a relatively poor quality fermentation (pH, 4·5; ammonia-N proportion of total N, 0·21).

There were no significant interactions between source and level of protein on any of the animal performance variables. Source of protein did not influence milk output or milk composition but increasing protein intake significantly increased milk yield (26·0 and 26·7 (s.e. 0·19) for the low and high protein supplements respectively). Blood urea levels were significantly influenced by both protein source and level.

Total diet digestibility and energy and N utilization studies were undertaken with six replicates per treatment and the full data are presented. Neither protein source nor level had any significant effect on DM or energy digestibility. N digestibility was significantly reduced following formaldehyde treatment of soya-bean meal (0·69 v. 0·72 (s.e. 0·01)) and most N utilization variables were influenced by the level of protein intake but not by protein source.

A survey of the accumulated experimental evidence suggests that the general effect of genetic differences in body size on input-output relationships in livestock might be largely accounted for by the following two genetic sizescaling rules:

1. treat all age and time variables for the ith genotype as directly proportional to Mi0·27, where Mi is the mature body weight of the ith genotype;

2. at every age standardized as in (1), treat all cumulated inputs and outputs for the zth genotype as directly proportional to Mi.

Rate of passage of digesta out of the rumen is generally assumed to follow first order kinetics but this assumption may not hold within 24-h feeding cycles. Four lactating cows offered a mixed forage/concentrate diet ad libitum from 08.00 h to 00.00 h and a protein-rich meal at either 08.30 or 00.30 h were used to investigate diurnal patterns in rumen volume and composition of digesta flowing into the duodenum. Cows were fitted with large rumen cannulae to permit complete emptying of rumen digesta and T-piece duodenal cannulae with inserts to enable collection of representative samples of digesta. Chromium-mordanted lucerne hay manually dosed to the rumen at 2-h intervals and a continuous infusion of cobalt-EDTA were used as digesta flow markers. Duodenal digesta was sampled over three alternate days to obtain samples representing every hour of the 24-h day, which were analysed individually. Use of either of the two markers gave similar results for mean daily flow but not for hourly flow and thus hourly flow data were not considered reliable. The content of crude protein in duodenal digesta varied within one feeding cycle from 200 to 320 g/kg in cows offered protein at 08.30 (‘day’) and from 240 to 300 in cows offered protein at 00.30 h (‘night’). On a daily basis, fractional passage rates (calculated from duodenal flow divided by rumen pool size) were significantly (P = 0·016) lower for protein for ‘night’ (0·0750 per h) versus ‘day’ (0·0824 per h) cows. The observation that marked diurnal patterns in the composition of protein flowing into the duodenum can apparently be ‘smoothed’ simply by altering feeding sequence, which was correlated with an increased milk fat yield, suggests there is potential for improving production through manipulating the way in which dietary components are offered within a day.

Iberian pigs and wild boars are the source of highly priced meat and dry-cured products. Iberian maternal origin is mandatory for labeled Iberian products, making necessary the authentication of their maternal breed origin. Discrimination between wild and domestic pig maternal origin may be useful to distinguish labeled wild boar meat obtained from hunting or farming. In order to detect useful polymorphisms to trace Iberian, Duroc and wild boar maternal lineages, we herein investigated the complete porcine mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) using three complementary approaches. Near-complete mtDNA sequences (16989 bp), excluding the minisatellite present in the displacement loop region (D-loop), were successfully determined in six Iberian pigs, two Duroc and six European wild boars. To complete the mtDNA analysis, the D-loop minisatellite region was also analyzed in the same set of samples by amplification and capillary electrophoresis detection. Finally, the frequencies of Asian and European Cytochrome B (Cyt B) haplotypes were estimated in Iberian (n = 96) and Duroc (n = 125) breeds. Comparison of near-complete mtDNA sequences revealed a total of 57 substitutions and two Indels. Out of them, 32 polymorphisms were potential Iberian markers, 10 potential Duroc markers and 16 potential wild boar markers. Fourteen potential markers (five Iberian and nine Duroc), were selected to be genotyped in 96 Iberian and 91 Duroc samples. Five wild boar potential markers were selected and tested in samples of wild boars (73) and domestic pigs including: 96 Iberian, 16 Duroc, 16 Large White and 16 Landrace. Genotyping results showed three linked markers (m.7998C>T, m.9111T>C, m.14719A>G) absent in Duroc and present in Iberian pigs with a frequency 0.72. Six markers (m.8158C>T, m.8297T>C, m.9230G>A, m.11859A>G, m.13955T>C, m.16933T>C), three of them linked, were absent in Iberian pigs and present in Duroc with a joint frequency of almost 0.50. Finally three linked markers (m.7188G>A, m.9224T>C, m.15823A>G) were solely detected in wild boars with a frequency 0.22. The D-loop minisatellite results showed overlapping ranges of fragment sizes and suggested heteroplasmy, a result that nullify the use of this region for the development of breed diagnostic markers. The Cyt B haplotype results showed the presence of European haplotypes in Iberian while one of the Asian haplotypes was detected in Duroc with a frequency 0.22, linked to the Duroc marker m.9230G>A. Our results are valuable to resolve the problems of Iberian and wild boar maternal origin determination but additional markers are required to achieve totally useful genetic tests.

Two pairs of cattle and two pairs of buffaloes carted loads, in wooden wheeled local carts, 16 to 17 km over the same flat route on village tracks. One team worked each day in temperatures of 24 to 37°C for a total of 6 days per team.

Body temperature, respiration rate and stepping rate in one animal from each pair and work done and distance travelled were monitored.

Buffaloes and cattle started work at speeds of 1 m/s or more. Cattle kept this up for most of the day whereas the buffaloes showed a steady decrease in speed over the day to speeds of less than 0·9 m/s in the last hour. Body temperature of the buffaloes increased during work. By 3-5 h, increases of up to 3·5°C in starting values could be seen. It was necessary to stop and let the buffaloes wallow for at least 20 min to allow them to cool off before they would continue to work. During wallowing body temperature decreased to or below values seen at the start of the day's work. Unlike the buffaloes, the cattle showed changes of less than 1°C in body temperature during work. Respiration rates of buffaloes increased at least two-fold as they began panting usually after 1·5 to 2·5 h. Respiration rates of the cattle could also increase up to three-fold during work. The results have shown that in well fed animals there is little to choose between buffaloes and oxen in daily work output. Estimated daily energy expenditures by the buffaloes and cattle on working days were similar, 1·75 to 1·79 and 1·74 to 1·78 × maintenance, respectively. However, buffaloes usually took longer to achieve the work, as time had to be allowed for wallowing. This is seen as the main disadvantage of using buffaloes for carting on longer routes.

Domestication is a condition in which the breeding, care and feeding of animals are, at least in part, controlled by humans. Information regarding the changes in the protein composition of eggs in response to domestication is very limited. Such data are prerequisite for improvements in the reproduction of domesticated fish. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of domestication on the proteome of pikeperch eggs using two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis. We analysed high-quality eggs from domesticated and wild pikeperch fish to reveal proteins that were presumably only related to the domestication process and not to the quality of eggs. Here, we show that domestication has a profound impact on the protein profile of pikeperch eggs. We identified 66 differentially abundant protein spots, including 27 spots that were more abundant in wild-caught pikeperch eggs and 39 spots that were enriched in eggs collected from domesticated females. Eggs originating from wild-caught females showed higher expression levels of proteins involved in folding, apoptotic process, purine metabolism and immune response, whereas eggs of domesticated females showed higher expression levels of proteins that participated mainly in metabolism. The changes in metabolic proteins in eggs from domesticated females can reflect the adaptation of pikeperch to commercial diets, which have profoundly distinct compositions compared with natural diets. The decrease in the abundance of proteins related to immune response in eggs from the domesticated population suggests that domestication may lead to disturbances in defence mechanisms. In turn, the lower abundance of heat shock proteins in eggs of domesticated fish may indicate their adaptation to stable farming conditions and reduced environmental stressors or their better tolerance of stress from breeding. The proteins identified in this study can increase our knowledge concerning the mechanism of the pikeperch domestication process.

Observations on 160 Wiltshire lambs showed that shedding of the birth-coat occurred as a seasonal (normally May–July) phenomenon between the ages of 2 and 5 months. Denudation was usually considerable but not always complete. The average extent of denudation in 3 successive lamb crops was 89 %, 74 % and 92 %. Shedding usually spread progressively across the body according to a consistent, bilaterally symmetrical pattern.

Shedding did not appear to be influenced by the sex of the lamb, birthcoat type (hairy or smooth), or by follicle density, ratio of secondary: primary follicles, or fibre diameter. However, a number of different causes of variation in shedding behaviour were found.

1. Lambs born at different times tended to synchronise in onset of shedding so that they were more alike in the dates when they shed than in the ages at which they did so. Very early and very late-born lambs showed least effective synchronisation. Early lambs were older but still earlier than normal in commencing to shed; late lambs shed when younger than normal and in an atypical fashion. It was concluded that the age of the lamb, and an unknown environmental stimulus both interacted to influence shedding.

2. There was a positive association between rate of gain in live-weight and earliness of shedding. Differences in level of nutrition seemed associated with differences in rate of shedding between individual lambs and also with overall differences in the average rates of shedding between years.

3. Genetic variation in shedding was suggested by twins being more alike than half-sibs in some aspects of shedding, particularly when differences in level of nutrition were discounted.

4. In Wiltshire foetuses the order and pattern of development of embryonic follicles in different body areas resembled closely the sequence and pattern of subsequent birthcoat shedding. A causal connection was postulated.

In discussion it was suggested that there was a seasonally fluctuating environmental factor (possibly daylength), which was capable of reacting upon the Wiltshire lamb between the months of March and July. A hypothesis was developed to explain how such a stimulus could react upon the pelage follicles to produce the observed patterns of birthcoat shedding.

Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) is a secreted protein that regulates lipid, glucose and energy metabolism. This study was conducted to better understand the effect of ANGPTL3 on important economic traits in cattle. First, transcript profiles for ANGPTL3 were measured in nine different Jiaxian cattle tissues. Second, polymorphisms were identified in the complete coding region and promoter region of the bovine ANGPTL3 gene in 707 cattle samples. Finally, an association study was carried out utilizing these single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to determine the effect of these SNPs on the growth and meat quality traits. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that ANGPTL3 was mainly expressed in the liver. The promoter of the bovine ANGPTL3 contained several putative transcription factor binding sites (SF1, HNF-1, LXRα, NFκβ, HNF-3 and C/EBP). In total, four SNPs of the bovine ANGPTL3 gene were identified by direct sequencing. SNP1 (rs469906272: g.−38T>C) was identified in the promoter, SNP2 (rs451104723:g.104A>T) and SNP3 (rs482516226: g.509A>G) were identified in exon 1, and SNP4 (rs477165942: g.8661T>C) was identified in exon 6. Changes in predicted protein structures due to non-synonymous SNPs were analyzed. Haplotype frequencies and linkage disequilibrium were also investigated. Analysis of four SNPs in cattle from different native Chinese breeds (Nanyang (NY) and Jiaxian (JX)) and commercial breeds (Angus (AG), Hereford (HF), Limousin (LM), Luxi (LX), Simmental (ST) and Jinnan (JN)) revealed a significant association with growth traits (including: BW and hipbone width) and meat quality traits (including: Warner–Bratzler shear force and ribeye area). Therefore, implementation of these four mutations in selection indices in the beef industry may be beneficial in selecting individuals with superior growth and meat quality traits.

Two fibrous roughages, wheat straw and cotton hulls, were treated with 0, 40 and 80 g sodium hydroxide (NaOH)/kg roughage, applied in amounts of water calculated to bring the roughages to moisture contents of 30 and 60%. The effects of these factors on the nutritive values of the two roughages were examined using a 2 × 3 × 2 factorial design.

Digestibility trials, in vitro and in vivo, and a 9-mo feeding trial were carried out with the roughages soon after treatment. Concentrates were limited to 6 kg/head per day throughout the animal experiments and roughages were offered ad libitum.

Neutral detergent fibre decreased by 7·8 and 13·5% with the 40 and 80 g application rates of NaOH respectively.

The treatment of both roughages with NaOH increased considerably their in vitro dry matter digestibility and total solubles after enzyme treatment, the increases being related to the rate of application of NaOH. Digestibility in vivo was improved only by the 40 g NaOH treatment.

Treatment with NaOH reduced the voluntary intake of both roughages. Only the 80 g/kg treatment had a positive effect on rate of live- and carcass-weight gain. On the other hand, NaOH improved very significantly the efficiency of conversion of metabolizable energy into live and carcass weight and increased significantly the degree of fatness of the animals. These results indicate a marked improvement in the nutritional value of both roughages due to NaOH treatment. The reason for the small response in rate of gain may be explained by a shortage of protein owing to a possible reduction in its digestibility. Cotton hulls excelled wheat straw in almost every respect. Animals on NaOH-treated cotton hulls bloated chronically unless some long straw was given. Moisture level had practically no effect on performance.

The effects of the treatments on rumen or blood constituents were small.

In certain contexts, dairy firms are supplied by small-scale family farms. Firms provide a set of technical and economic recommendations meant to help farmers meet their requirements in terms of the quantity and quality of milk collected. This study analyzes how such recommendations may be adopted by studying six farms in Brazil. All farms are beneficiaries of the country's agrarian reforms, but they differ in terms of how they developed their activities, their resources and their milk collection objectives. First, we built a technical and economic benchmark farm based on recommendations from a dairy firm and farmer advisory institutions. Our analysis of the farms’ practices and technical and economic results show that none of the farms in the sample apply all of the benchmark recommendations; however, all farms specialized in dairy production observe the main underlying principles with regard to feeding systems and breeding. The decisive factors in whether the benchmark is adopted and successfully implemented are (i) access to the supply chain when a farmer establishes his activity, (ii) a grasp of reproduction and forage production techniques and (iii) an understanding of dairy cattle feed dietary rationing principles. The technical problems observed in some cases impact the farms’ dairy performance and cash position; this can lead to a process of disinvestment. This dynamic of farms facing production standards suggests that the diversity of specialized livestock farmers should be taken into account more effectively through advisory approaches that combine basic zootechnical training with assistance in planning farm activities over the short and medium term.

Fifty-four lean genotype crossbred gilts were allocated at 118 days of age among three diets with different protein concentrations to give lysine: energy (g/MJ digestible energy) ratios: high (0·9), medium (0·6) and low (0·3) given twice daily at 2·9 × maintenance energy. At 160 days of age, gilts were treated with exogenous gonadotropin (PG600™) and animals were examined daily for signs of oestrus. Animals were slaughtered after the second oestrus, if they had shown behavioural oestrus, or at the age of 212 days. Reproductive tracts were recovered for counting of corpora lutea and albicantia. L gilts were lighter than M or H gilts at puberty induction (80, 95, 97 (s.e. 0·73) kg for L, M, H respectively, P < 0·001), with greater backfat thickness (10·8,10·0, 9·2 (s.e. 0·21) mm P2,P < 0·001), lesser longissimus muscle depth (57·4, 65·9, 64·3 (s.e. 0·77) mm, P < 0·001) and poorer food conversion ratio during rearing (3·87, 2·48, 2·42 (s.e. 0·098) kg food per kg gain, P < 0·001). There was no statistically significant difference in the total number of animals that responded to the puberty induction, although L had a greater latency to oestrus than H. Ovulation rate at this induced oestrus was significantly lower in L gilts than in M or H gilts (12·5, 17·3, 21·5 (s.e. 1·32), P < 0·02). A lower proportion ofL, compared with M or H gilts showed spontaneous ovulation in a subsequent cycle (0·15, 0·75, 0·77, %2 = 12·72, P < 0·005). It proved possible, by means of low protein (lysine) diets, to increase body fat reserves in breeding gilts but protein restriction in the rearing phase negatively affected aspects of reproductive performance.

The aim of this paper is to present an approach for an integrated evaluation of the sustainability of pig farming systems, taking into account the three classical pillars: economy, environment and society. Eight sustainability themes were considered: Animal Welfare (AW), Animal Health (AH), Breeding Programmes (BP), Environment (EN), Meat Safety (MS), Market Conformity (MC), Economy (EC) and Working Conditions (WC). A total of 37 primary indicators were identified and used for the evaluation of 15 much contrasted pig farming systems in five EU countries. The results show that the eight themes were not redundant and all contributed to the observed variation between systems. The tool was very robust for highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the systems along the eight themes that were considered. The number of primary indicators could be reduced from 37 to 18 with limited impact on the strengths/weaknesses profile of the individual systems. Integrating the eight theme evaluations into a single sustainability score is based on hypotheses or presumptions on the relative weights that should be given to the eight themes, which are very dependent on the context and on the purpose of the users of the tool. Therefore, the present paper does not have the ambition to provide a ready-for-use tool, rather to suggest an approach for the integrated evaluation of the sustainability of pig farming systems.

1. An experiment to test the effects on growth rate of lambs to 15 kg live weight of 5, 7 or 9 kg of milk replacer powder given according to four systems of daily restriction is described and the results are discussed.

2. Although the average age at weaning varied from 18 to 50 days according to treatment, the quantity of milk replacer did not affect the lambs' overall growth rate. Lambs deprived of milk consumed extra concentrates at a rate of 1·75 ± 0·219 kg per kg of milk powder.

3. Although severe restriction of the daily allowance markedly reduced the growth of lambs during the milk-feeding period, they subsequently grew at a faster rate and there was no resultant major depression of overall growth rate. The lambs first consumed a measurable quantity of solid food when they were on average 21 days old and this varied little according to treatment.

4. It is concluded that under the conditions of this experiment it was not economic to give more than 5 kg of milk powder and that it was not advantageous to adopt distribution systems that delayed weaning much beyond 20 days.

5. The applicability of these findings to practice is discussed in relation to the possibility of treatment effects from the rearing period being carried over to the period beyond 15 kg live weight, and also to the possible effects of single penning versus grouping on lamb behaviour.

Crude glycerin, a potential energy source for ruminant animals, has been evaluated, mainly, in diets with high starch content. However, a limit number of studies have evaluated the inclusion of crude glycerin in low starch diets. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the association of crude glycerin with corn grain or citrus pulp on carcass traits and meat quality of Nellore bulls (n=30, 402±31 kg initial weight). The treatment consisted of: CON=control, without crude glycerin; CG10=10% of crude glycerin and corn grain; CG15=15% of crude glycerin and corn grain; CP10=10% of crude glycerin and citrus pulp; CP15=15% of crude glycerin and citrus pulp. The performance parameters and carcass traits were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). The inclusion of crude glycerin decreased yellow color intensity and increased fatty acids pentadecanoic and heptadecenoic in meat (P<0.05), without affecting neither the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids nor the relationship of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The association of crude glycerin with corn or citrus pulp has no adverse effects on carcass characteristics and meat quality.

The aim of the present investigation was, to examine whether outdoor wintering of lambing ewes is a successful and animal friendly production system. The welfare and growth performance of winterborn lambs in outdoor husbandry were assessed in two winter periods (1995/96, 1996/97) when a total of 353 lambs were born into three different husbandry systems. System 1 consisted of 75 lambs from 26 (winter 1) and 29 (winter 2) ewes and was wintered outdoors with access to a lambing shelter with a straw bedded floor. System 2 included 120 lambs from 52 (winter 1) and 54 (winter 2) ewes which were born in an uninsulated barn with access to an outdoor yard. System 3 was kept in an uninsulated barn with no access to the outside and consisted of 158 lambs from 52 (winter 1) and 54 (winter 2) ewes. The lambs were of five different genetic origins which were equally distributed over the three husbandry systems. The genetic groups included purebreds from the hardy ‘Rhönschaf’ (RHO) and from the ‘German Blackface’ (GBF) mutton breed and the reciprocal crosses of these breeds (GBF ✕ RHO, RHO ✕ GBF). The fifth group were crossbreds between rams of the small-framed French mutton breed ‘Charmoise’ (CHA) and Rhönschaf-ewes (CHA ✕ RHO). The time period between parturition and first standing (‘time to stand’) and the time period from birth to first sucking (‘time to suck’) were considered as vigour traits. Vigour was visually assessed and scored. The rectal temperature was measured 3 h post partum. Live-weight gains were estimated from birth to 25 and 42 days of life. No differences between the different husbandry systems were observed in the measured traits. Outdoor-born lambs showed the same vigour and were able to maintain homeothermy as well as those born indoors. Ewes sought the shelter prior to lambing which might have favoured the early vigour of lambs and thus, their ability to maintain homeothermy. The visually assessed vigour score was in good accordance with the vigour traits time to stand and time to suck. The breed of the ewe had a significant effect on lamb vigour, lambs from hardy RHO ewes showing a better vigour than lambs from GBF ewes. Hybrid vigour estimates of time to stand and time to suck were 0·17 and 0·20, respectively, but were not statistically significant.

Crossbred lambs between GBF and CHA mutton rams and hardy RHO ewes had a good vitality and growth performance. Outdoor wintering with a lambing shelter did not adversely influence survival of newborn lambs or their subsequent growth performance.

In organic pig production one of the major challenges is to be able to fulfil amino acid requirements based on organic and locally grown protein feed crops. The pig is an opportunistic omnivore with a unique capacity for foraging above and below the soil surface. It is hypothesized that direct foraging in the range area can pose an important contribution in terms of fulfilling nutrient requirements of growing pigs. Foraging activity, lucerne nutrient intake and pig performance were investigated in 36 growing pigs, foraging on lucerne or grass and fed either a standard organic pelleted feed mixture (HP: high protein) or a grain mixture containing 48% less CP (LP: low protein) compared with the high protein feed mixture, from an average live weight of 58 kg to 90 kg in a complete block design in three replicates. The pigs were fed 80% of energy recommendations and had access to 4 m2 of pasture/pig per day during the 40 days experimental period from September to October 2013. Behavioural observations were carried out 12 times over the entire experimental period. For both crops, LP pigs rooted significantly more compared with HP pigs but the effect of CP level was more pronounced in grass (44% v. 19% of all observations) compared with lucerne (28% v. 16% of all observations). Feed protein level turned out not to have any significant effect on grazing behaviour but pigs foraging on lucerne grazed significantly more than pigs foraging on grass (10% v. 4% of all observations). Daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio were significantly affected by feed protein and forage crop interactions. Compared to HP pigs, LP treated pigs had 33% lower daily weight gain (589 v. 878 g) and 31% poorer feed conversion ratio (3.75 v. 2.59 kg feed/kg weight gain) in grass paddocks, whereas in lucerne paddocks LP pigs only had 18% lower daily weight gain (741 v. 900 g) and a 14% poorer feed conversion ratio (2.95 v. 2.54 kg feed/kg weight gain) compared with HP pigs. LP pigs foraging on lucerne used 169 g less concentrate CP/kg weight gain, compared with HP pigs, indicating the nitrogen efficiency of the system. The results indicate that direct foraging of lucerne may be a valuable strategy in terms of accommodating CP and lysine requirements of organic growing pigs.

The use of diets with increased fibre content from alternative feedstuffs less digestible for pigs is a solution considered to limit the impact of increased feed costs on pig production. This study aimed at determining the impact of an alternative diet on genetic parameters for growth, feed efficiency, carcass composition and meat quality traits. A total of 783 Large White pigs were fed a high-fibre (HF) diet and 880 of their sibs were fed a conventional (CO) cereal-based diet. Individual daily feed intake, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake were recorded as well as lean meat percentage (LMP), carcass yield (CY) and meat quality traits. Pigs fed the CO diet had better performances for growth and feed efficiency than pigs fed the HF diet. They also had lower LMP and higher CY. In addition, pigs fed the CO diet had lower loin percentage and ham percentage and higher backfat percentage. No differences were observed in meat quality traits between diets, except for a* and b* values. For all traits, the genetic variances and heritability were not different between diets. Genetic correlations for traits between diets ranged between 0.80 ± 0.13 and 0.99 ± not estimable, and none were significantly different from 0.99, except for LMP. Thus, traits in both diets were considered as mainly affected by similar sets of genes in the two diets. A genetic correlation lower than 0.80 would justify redesigning the breeding scheme; however, some genetic correlations did not differ significantly from 0.80 either. Therefore, larger populations are needed for a more definitive answer regarding the design of the breeding scheme. To further evaluate selection strategies, a production index was computed within diets for the 29 sires with estimated breeding value reliability higher than 0.35. The rank correlation between indices estimated in the CO and in the HF diet was 0.72. Altogether, we concluded that limited interaction between feed and genetics could be evidenced, and based on these results there is no need to change pig selection schemes to adapt to the future increased use of alternative feedstuffs in production farms.

An experimental administration of dexamethasone was carried out on 15 veal calves in order to assess the rôle of low doses of exogenous glucocorticoids on productive traits and meat quality. Three groups, of five veal calves each, were formed: one group received oral dexamethasone (0·4 mg per calf per day for 25 days), another intramuscular (i. m.) dexamethasone (2 mg at days 14 and 21), and the third was the control. Calves were slaughtered at 165 days of age (day 31). Food conversion ratio (FCR), hot dressing percentage (HDP), chilled dressing percentage (CDP) and shrinkage were determined. From all carcasses, samples of m. longissimus thoracis (between the 8th and 10th rib) were taken in order to evaluate the chemical composition and some organoleptic characteristics: meat colour, waterholding capacity and tenderness. The animals treated with oral dexamethasone showed the lowest daily weight gain (P 0·05) and the poorest FCR (P 0·05). Hot dressing percentage, cold dressing percentage and shrinkage were not affected by the oral treatment. The i. m. injections of dexamethasone did not influence the overall performance. Muscle chemical composition and pH were not affected by the treatments; the meat of calves treated with oral dexamethasone was significantly lighter (P 0·05) and tended to be paler, while i. m. treatment induced intermediate characteristics. The shear force of the meat was rather low. Shear force of cooked meat from animals treated with dexamethasone (both oral and i. m.) was significantly lower than the control (P < 0·05). Treatment with dexamethasone i. m. induced a decrease in water-holding capacity; the oral treatment had no effect on this parameter.

The expression of oestrous behaviour in Holstein Friesian dairy cows has progressively decreased over the past 50 years. Reduced oestrus expression is one of the factors contributing to the current suboptimal reproductive efficiency in dairy farming. Variation between and within cows in the expression of oestrous behaviour is associated with variation in peripheral blood oestradiol concentrations during oestrus. In addition, there is evidence for a priming role of progesterone for the full display of oestrous behaviour. A higher rate of metabolic clearance of ovarian steroids could be one of the factors leading to lower peripheral blood concentrations of oestradiol and progesterone in high-producing dairy cows. Oestradiol acts on the brain by genomic, non-genomic and growth factor-dependent mechanisms. A firm base of understanding of the ovarian steroid-driven central genomic regulation of female sexual behaviour has been obtained from studies on rodents. These studies have resulted in the definition of five modules of oestradiol-activated genes in the brain, referred to as the GAPPS modules. In a recent series of studies, gene expression in the anterior pituitary and four brain areas (amygdala, hippocampus, dorsal hypothalamus and ventral hypothalamus) in oestrous and luteal phase cows, respectively, has been measured, and the relation with oestrous behaviour of these cows was analysed. These studies identified a number of genes of which the expression was associated with the intensity of oestrous behaviour. These genes could be grouped according to the GAPPS modules, suggesting close similarity of the regulation of oestrous behaviour in cows and female sexual behaviour in rodents. A better understanding of the central genomic regulation of the expression of oestrous behaviour in dairy cows may in due time contribute to improved (genomic) selection strategies for appropriate oestrus expression in high-producing dairy cows.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) content and composition are relevant for the meat industry due to their effect on human health and meat organoleptic properties. A divergent selection experiment for IMF of Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle was performed in rabbits during eight generations. The aim of this study is to estimate the correlated responses to selection for IMF on the fatty acid composition of LD. Response to selection for IMF was 0.34 g/100 g of LD, representing 2.4 phenotypic SD of the trait. High-IMF line showed 9.20% more monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and 0.39%, 9.97% and 10.3% less n-3, n-6 and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), respectively, than low-IMF line. The main MUFA and PUFA individual fatty acids followed a similar pattern, except for C18:3n-3 that was greater in the high-IMF line. We did not observe differences between lines for the percentage of total saturated fatty acids, although high-IMF line showed greater C14:0 and C16:0 and lower C18:0 percentages than low-IMF line. Heritability estimates were generally high for all fatty acids percentages, ranging from 0.43 to 0.59 with a SD around 0.08, showing an important genetic component on these traits. Genetic correlations between IMF and LD fatty acid percentages were strong and positive for C14:0, C16:1, C18:1n-9, and MUFA, ranging from 0.88 to 0.97, and strong and negative for C18:0, C18:2n-6, C20:4n-6, n-6 and PUFA, ranging from −0.83 to −0.91. These correlations were accurately estimated, with SD ranging from 0.02 to 0.06. The genetic correlations between IMF and other fatty acids were estimated with lower accuracy. In general, phenotypic and genetic correlations were of the same order. Our experiment shows that selection for IMF strongly affects the fatty acid composition of meat, due the high heritabilities of fatty acids and their high genetic correlations with IMF.
