1. A total of 33 energy balance trials was conducted with veal calves offered a high-fat milk replacer diet containing 10, 20, 40 or 100 mg iron/kg DM.

2. There were no significant differences in weight gain, food conversion or energy retention between calves receiving 20, 40 or 100 mg iron/kg DM in their diet. Calves receiving only 10 mg iron/kg gained weight and retained energy at significantly lower rates than those in the other groups.

3. The metabolic heat production of calves receiving the liquid diet was greater than that of calves given the same amount of gross energy from a barley diet. The recommended air temperature of about 20°C for veal calf houses is therefore unnecessarily high.

In an experiment with group-fed cattle from 6 months of age to slaughter at 480 kg live weight two levels of feed intake: 1, ad libitum, 2, 85% of ad libitum amount, were combined with two ratios of concentrate to hay: a, 70: 30; b, 30: 70. In two further treatments, 3a and 3b, the cattle were fed diets a or b at 70% of ad libitum from 6 to 10 months and ad libitum thereafter.

Daily gain during the first 124 days of the experiment was (in grams) 1293, 983, 1097, 846, 992 and 756, and from the 125th day to slaughter 735, 600, 796, 579, 830 and 714, for treatments la, lb, 2a, 2b, 3a and 3b, respectively. The decline in rate of gain from the first period to the second was inversely related to the level of feed intake and to the percentage of concentrates in the ration in the first period.

Daily carcass gain was 582, 393, 532, 350, 531 and 368 g for treatments la, lb, 2a, 2b, 3a and 3b, respectively.

The treatments that were switched over from 70% of ad libitum feed intake in the first period to 100% in the second (3a and 3b), exhibited considerable compensatory growth in the second period, but this was not sufficient to be of economic advantage.

The overall ME requirement per kg of live-weight gain was inversely related to rate of gain. Of the six treatments, 2a (85% of ad libitum, 70% concentrate) was the most efficient (19·8 Mcal/kg live-weight gain).

Animals on the 100% level of feed intake throughout the experiment (treatments la, lb) were significantly fatter than those on the other treatments.

An unselected, non-inbred population of laboratory mice has been propagated for 25 generations by 20 pairs (families) of mice, each leaving one son and one daughter selected at random from the litter. The daughter was given the family number of her dam, while her mate came from another family varying systematically in different generations. The breeding plan precluded any possibility of common ancestry for five generations. In later generations the inbreeding coefficient rose at an average rate expected from a population with an effective number of approximately 80, to approximately 0·13 in generation 25. The rise occurred in cycles, repeating every five generations. Data are presented to demonstrate that overall reproduction (total weight of young produced at 9 weeks of age, per female mated) and the components of survival from birth to 9 weeks, survival from sexing (3 weeks) to 9 weeks separately for males and females, and 9-week weight of males and females, were each sensitive to changes in inbreeding coefficient. In contrast, conception rate, litter size (live young born) and sex ratio did not reflect changes in the inbreeding coefficient. The magnitude of the depression in overall reproduction was substantially greater than that in any of the affected components.

The galactopoietic effect of growth hormone (GH) in lactating ruminants is well established; however the mechanisms that mediate these effects are not well understood. The first objective of this study was to determine the effect of GH on the synthesis of the major casein and whey proteins. The second objective was to identify the genes and pathways that may be involved in mediating the effect of GH on milk synthesis. A single subcutaneous injection of a commercially available slow release formulation of GH (Lactatropin®), or physiological saline solution (control) was administered to non-pregnant dairy cows (n=4/group) in mid-late lactation. Milk samples were collected for composition analysis and mammary lobulo-alveolar tissue was collected postmortem 6 days post injection. Gene expression profiles were evaluated using either a 22 000 bovine complementary DNA microarray or quantitative PCR (qPCR), and microarrays were validated by qPCR. The yield of all the major casein and whey proteins was increased 32% to 41% in GH-treated cows, with the exception of α-lactalbumin yield which was elevated by 70% relative to controls. Treatment with GH treatment tended to increase the concentration of α-lactalbumin but had no effect on the concentration of any of the major milk proteins. Messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance of the major whey and casein genes, with the exception of α-s2-casein, was increased in response to GH compared with controls, which is consistent with the positive effect of GH on milk production. Treatment with GH treatment influenced the mRNA abundance of genes involved in cell growth and proliferation, transcriptional and translational regulation, actin cytoskeleton signalling, lipid metabolism and cell death. This study has provided new insights into the cell signalling that may be involved in mediating the effect of GH on milk production in the mammary gland of lactating dairy cows.

Growth performance and body composition differences between Large White control (C) and index-selected (S) pigs were evaluated on feeding scales calculated to give very low, low and medium daily growth rates of approximately 450 g, 550 g and 650 g respectively. Starting at 30·3 (s.e. 0·32) kg, 72 boars were penned in groups of six, and one C and one S boar was fed on each of the three feeding scales for 84 days. The feeding scales started at 1·1, 1·2 and 1·3 kg per pig per day for the intended very low, low and medium growth rates with weekly increments of 0·025, 0·050 and 0·075 kg per pig per day. The 34 C and 35 S boars which completed the trial were slaughtered, their carcasses dissected and the whole empty bodies minced and chemically analysed. In no case was the interaction between line of pig and feeding treatment significant. S boars grew faster than C boars on all three levels of feeding. S boars also grew lean tissue faster, deposited less total fat, and had smaller backfat depths than C boars. Similar differences between lines in chemical composition were also apparent for whole body crude protein and lipid. Although the index selection at Newcastle was based on ad libitum performance tests, improvements in the lean content and lean tissue growth rates of the selection line were apparent even at very low levels of feeding.

This study aimed at assessing the impact of four barley forms on total tract apparent digestibility of dietary fibre in horses fed a large amount of starch in the morning meal (0.27% BW). Processed barley forms had a greater pre-caecal starch digestibility than the whole form. Based on this result, we hypothesised that using barley-processing methods would limit the potential dumping of undegraded starch in the hindgut of horses and, consequently, the potential negative effect on fibre degradation in the hindgut. In a 4×4 latin square design, four mature geldings fitted with a right ventral colon-fistula were fed a meadow hay : concentrate (62 : 38; dry matter (DM) basis) diet at 1.7% BW. The concentrate was made of 80% barley distributed either as whole grain or as processed forms: 2.5 mm ground, pelleted or steam-flaked. For each period, total tract apparent digestibilities of DM, NDF and ADF were determined over 3 consecutive days by total faecal collection, whereas pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentrations and cultural functional bacteria counts (total anaerobic, cellulolytic bacteria, lactic acid producers, amylolytic bacteria and lactic acid utilisers) in colonic content were evaluated on 1 day 4 h after the morning meal. Total tract apparent digestibility of DM and dietary fibre was influenced (P<0.05) by barley form. Diets including thermo-mechanically treated barley forms led to a higher (P<0.05) total tract apparent digestibility of NDF than those constituted of ground barley and also led to a greater (P<0.05) total tract apparent digestibility of ADF than those made of whole or ground barley forms. However, no significant difference was observed in colonic pH, VFA concentrations and cultural bacteria concentrations. Owing to a high starch supply in the morning meal, the concentration of the functional bacteria in the colonic content averaged 7.8 log CFU/ml, 5.9 NPM/ml, 6.9 and 7.3 CFU/ml for total anaerobic, cellulolytic, amylolytic and lactic acid-utilising bacteria, respectively. Consequently, providing horses with pelleted or steam-flaked instead of ground barley forms may limit the negative impact of starch on fibre digestibility in horses fed a high level of starch in the morning meal (0.27% BW). Moreover, the fibre-to-starch ratio fed in this experiment did not cause any digestive upset.

The β-3 adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) is a G-protein coupled receptor involved in regulating lipolysis, as part of homeostatic regulation. In this study, South African Mutton Merino and Shanxi Dam Line were used to study the distribution and quantification of ADRB3 in adipose (subcutaneous, omental, retroperitoneal, mesenteric and perirenal fat) and non-adipose (heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney) tissues of sheep. The protein was determined by immunohistochemical technique and by mRNA abundance via real-time polymerase chain reaction. ADRB3 was detected in all studied tissues with abundance in adipose tissues higher than in non-adipose tissues (P < 0.001). For adipose tissues, greater expression was found in deep deposits such as great omental and retroperitoneal fat than in subcutaneous fat (P < 0.05). Significant differences (P < 0.05) both for mRNA and for protein expression also existed between the two sheep flocks. These findings are consistent with the known function of ADRB3 in mediating lipolysis and homeostasis in adipose tissues.

One of the key factors to improve swine production sustainability is the use of agro-industrial by-products in feeds, such as olive by-products. However, it is necessary to assess its effects on the overall production process, including the animal and the environment. With this aim, an experiment was conducted to determine the effects of including a partially defatted olive cake (PDOC) in pig diets on growth performance, faecal microbiota, carcass quality and gas emission from the slurry. Two finishing diets were formulated, a control (C) diet and a diet with PDOC included at 120 g/kg. Eighty finishing male pigs Duroc-Danbred × (Landrace × Large White) of 60.4 ± 7.00 kg BW were divided between these two treatments. During the finishing period (60 to 110 kg BW, 55 days) average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were recorded. Faecal samples from the rectum of 16 animals per treatment were incubated for bacteria enumeration. At the end of finishing period, backfat thickness and loin depth (LD) were measured. Animals were slaughtered to obtain carcass weight and carcass composition parameters, and subcutaneous fat was sampled to analyse the fatty acid (FA) profile. In addition greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions were measured during pig slurry storage using the methodology of dynamic flux chambers. An initial slurry characterisation and biochemical methane potential (B0) were also determined. No significant differences between treatments were found in performance, carcass quality and microbial counts with the exception of LD, which was lower in PDOC compared with C animals (45.5 v. 47.5 mm, SEM: 0.62; P = 0.020). The FA profile of the subcutaneous fat did not differ between treatments, but the monounsaturated FA (MUFA) concentration was higher and the polyunsaturated FA was lower in the animals fed PDOC (50.9 v. 48.3, SEM: 0.48, P < 0.001; 17.6 v. 19.3, SEM: 0.30, P < 0.001 in mg/100 g of Total FA, for PDOC and C animals, respectively). The initial pig slurry characterisation only showed differences in ADF concentration that was higher (P < 0.05) in the slurry from PDOC treatment. Regarding gas emission, slurries from both treatments emitted similar amounts of ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as B0 values. The results obtained suggest that PDOC may be included in balanced pig diets at rates of up to 120 g/kg without negative effects on performance, carcass quality, gut microflora and slurry gas emission, while improving the MUFA concentration of subcutaneous fat.

SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis is a tool widely used to help in decision making in complex systems. It suits to exploring the issues and measures related to the conservation and development of local breeds, as it allows the integration of many driving factors influencing breed dynamics. We developed a quantified SWOT method as a decision-making tool for identification and ranking of conservation and development strategies of local breeds, and applied it to a set of 13 cattle breeds of six European countries. The method has four steps: definition of the system, identification and grouping of the driving factors, quantification of the importance of driving factors and identification and prioritization of the strategies. The factors were determined following a multi-stakeholder approach and grouped with a three-level structure. Animal genetic resources expert groups ranked the factors, and a quantification process was implemented to identify and prioritize strategies. The proposed SWOT methodology allows analyzing the dynamics of local cattle breeds in a structured and systematic way. It is a flexible tool developed to assist different stakeholders in defining the strategies and actions. The quantification process allows the comparison of the driving factors and the prioritization of the strategies for the conservation and development of local cattle breeds. We identified 99 factors across the breeds. Although the situation is very heterogeneous, the future of these breeds may be promising. The most important strengths and weaknesses were related to production systems and farmers. The most important opportunities were found in marketing new products, whereas the most relevant threats were found in selling the current products. The across-breed strategies utility decreased as they gained specificity. Therefore, the strategies at European level should focus on general aspects and be flexible enough to be adapted to the country and breed specificities.

A total of 200 (Landrace × Large White dam × Pietrain × Large White sire) gilts of 50 ± 3 days of age (23.3 ± 1.47 kg BW) were used to investigate the effects of castration (intact gilt, IG v. castrated gilt, CG) and slaughter weight (SW; 106 v. 122 kg BW) on productive performance, carcass and meat quality. Four treatments were arranged factorially and five replicates of 10 pigs each per treatment. Half of the gilts were ovariectomized at 58 days of age (8 days after the beginning of the trial at 29.8 ± 1.64 kg BW), whereas the other half remained intact. The pigs were slaughtered at 106 or 122 kg BW. Meat samples were taken at Musculus longissimus thoracis at the level of the last rib and subcutaneous fat samples were taken at the tail insertion. For the entire experimental period, CG had higher (P < 0.05) BW gain and higher (P < 0.001) backfat and Musculus gluteus medius fat thickness than IG. However, IG had higher (P < 0.05) loin and trimmed primal cut yields than CG. Meat quality was similar for IG and CG but the proportion of linoleic acid in subcutaneous fat was higher (P < 0.001) for IG. Pigs slaughtered at 122 kg BW had higher (P < 0.001) feed intake and poorer feed efficiency than pigs slaughtered at 106 kg BW. An increase in SW improved (P < 0.001) carcass yield but decreased (P < 0.05) trimmed primal cut yield. Meat from pigs slaughtered at the heavier BW was redder (a*; P < 0.001) and had more (P < 0.01) intramuscular fat and less thawing (P < 0.05) and cooking (P < 0.10) loss than meat from pigs slaughtered at the lighter BW. In addition, pigs slaughtered at 122 kg BW had less (P < 0.01) linoleic acid content in subcutaneous fat than pigs slaughtered at 106 kg BW. Castration of gilts and slaughtering at heavier BW are useful practices for the production of heavy pigs destined to the dry-cured industry in which a certain amount of fat in the carcass is required. In contrast, when the carcasses are destined to fresh meat production, IG slaughtered at 106 kg BW is a more efficient alternative.

As the number of gestating sows reared in group housing increases, a better understanding of behavioral traits needed to negotiate these more complex social interactions promises to increase animal welfare and productivity. However, little is known about different behavioral strategies or coping styles in sows, and even less is understood about their ontogeny. To study the development of coping styles in adult gestating sows, 36 sows from the same sire line and same commercial maternal genetics were followed from birth through their second parity. Each animal was observed in a battery of stress-related behavioral tests at 5 weeks, and 3 months of age as well as 24 h postpartum as a parity 1 sow, and during introduction to subsequent gestation period in group housing. The tests at different ages included response to handling, open field exploration, human interaction, litter handling and social interactions with conspecifics. Many of the observed behaviors were correlated during the same period of the animal’s life and provided the motivation for a principal component analysis by age. Using principal component analysis, multiple traits were determined at each age point; at 5 weeks old: active, non-exploratory and cautious explained 82.5% of the variance; at 3 months of age: active, non-exploratory and low fear of humans explained 87.7% of the variance; and as primiparous sows: active, aggressive/dominant and submissive explained 82.0% of the variance. Several individual juvenile behaviors were associated with adult behavioral traits. For instance, the response to handling at 5 weeks was significantly predictive (β=0.4; P<0.05) of the aggressive/dominant trait of parity 1 sows. Taken together results presented here suggest that early behavioral responses of prepuberal gilts during specific instances of elevated environmental or social stress can predict future behavioral response as gestating sows.

Existing information about the effect of inbreeding on production characteristics in dairy cattle leaves much to be desired. Sources are two-fold ; from experiments specially designed to get information on this and other aspects of inbreeding and also from the analysis of records made in closed herds. However, the experiments are few and in many of the second type of analysis the degree of inbreeding is not high. Furthermore, an examination of the detailed results in one breed, Holstein-Friesians in the U.S.A., shows little agreement in the results obtained. While agreeing in finding a decline in production as inbreeding progressed, the different investigators disagreed as to the magnitude of the effect. Even under ideal conditons, one should perhaps not expect too close an agreement because the genetic situation may well be quite different in the initial stock in the different experiments and genetic drift during inbreeding may further obscure the picture. In addition, if the inbreeding each generation is small, any selection that is practised may complicate the situation. Most of the programmes of deliberate inbreeding were not started simply to investigate the effects of the breeding system but rather to try to produce superior inbred stock.

Many breeding programs have been implemented in developing countries, many of which have been unsuccessful. To better understand the failure of these breeding programs, it is proposed to analyze their adequacy with innovations that are actually adopted by smallholders. The proposed methodology takes account of these innovations, the reasons for their adoption and the objectives of livestock keeping. The N’Dama cattle-breeding program in Senegal was used as a case study. Surveys were carried out among 54 farmers: 27 breeders who participated in this program, 17 of whom recently resigned, and 27 breeders who have never participated. Feeding was the most frequently cited area of innovation, followed by infrastructure. Genetics, animal health and reproduction held the third rank. Milk production appeared as an important objective of breeders, although the context remains one of strong multifunctionality. Principal component analysis highlighted three categories of breeders according to the innovations they adopted: institutional, modernizing, and integrating innovators. The groups of institutional and modernizing innovators dominate, gathering each 41% of the farmers. In the first category, breeders have organized themselves in an association and use N’Dama sires, livestock aiming at an insurance objective. In the second category, artificial insemination with exotic breeds and other technical innovations (cowshed, vaccination, urea treatment of straw) are used to improve production of milk and meat. The third group is termed ‘integrating innovators,’ since their innovations aim at integrating livestock and crop production. Gathering 18% of the sampled breeders, this group presents intermediate features between the two previous groups, using animals as draught power and for manure production. These results indicate that a process of intensification is at play and that the genetic improvement through the selection of N’Dama cattle for production criteria does not meet the breeders’ demand. However, the N’Dama’s adaptive traits justify its use as part of the breeding strategy of farmers, either in pure-breeding or in crossbreeding. The study thus tends to show the interactive link between genetic improvement and other innovations. It suggests that the success of a breeding program depends on its adequate positioning within the set of innovations adopted by breeders and proposes a method to inform breeding programs accordingly.

Performance and mortality of hares were evaluated for 2 consecutive years in a large farm in Veneto Region (Northern Italy). On average, fertile reproductive pairs (n=318) gave birth 4.8 times and produced 11.4 live leverets, weaned 8.4 leverets and produced 7.0 growing hares (60 days) every year. Mean mortality was 3.6%, 22.9%, 9.7% and 2.5% in newborn (0 to 2 days of age), suckling (3 to 25 days), growing (26 to 60 days) and sub-adult (61 days until sale) hares, respectively. The main causes of mortality were enteric diseases (75.5%, 75.9% and 12.1% in suckling, growing and sub-adult hares, respectively), followed by respiratory diseases (3.4%, 8.0% and 36.2% in suckling, growing and sub-adult hares, respectively), starvation (11.3% and 8.8% in suckling and growing hares, respectively) and trauma (7.1%, 2.3% and 30.2% in suckling, growing and sub-adult hares, respectively). In reproducing hares, mortality was 24.7% and 15.4% in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Respiratory diseases (34.8%) and ulcerative pododermatitis (18.9%) were the most common pathological changes detected in reproducing hares. Farmed hares seem to be affected by diseases resembling those of rabbits reared under intensive conditions. It seems necessary to improve the husbandry of hares to reach satisfactory technical standards and to preserve their health.

A dynamic model for simulation of growth in pigs, that was extended by a module to describe protein turn-over, was made stochastic in order to simulate groups of pigs with among-animal variation in the maximum daily protein deposition (Pdep, maxK in the minimum lipid to protein deposition rate (Ri/pimin), and in the distributionof body protein over protein pools (muscle, connective tissue, and other proteins). As a result, these simulated pigs show among-animal variation in body protein content and composition. This in turn leads to among-animal variation in energy requirements for protein turn-over and this causes among-animal variation in maintenance metabolizable energy requirements (MEmaint)as a result of variation in body composition.

Simulated population means for PieVimax were varied in seven steps from 100 to 250 g/day, with an among-animal variation coefficient of 0·10; the feeding level was also varied in seven steps. Dependent on the levels of these input variables, 100-kg pigs showed within-population standard deviations in body protein and lipid content of 0·31 to 0·54 kg and 1·22 to 2·17 kg, respectively. ME showed a protein-turn-over-related, within-population coefficient of variation of 0·014 to 0·02. Comparisons over populations suggests that a 1·50 proportional increase in Pdep, max (from 100 to 250 g/day) would increase protein-turn-over-related MEmaint by 11 to 15%, from between 470 and 486 to 541 k] ME per kg body weight0'75 per day. The inferences that can be made from this with regard to experimental design are discussed.

The origin of post-ruminal purine bases (PB) was studied in 24 growing lambs that were given a pelleted concentrate plus barley straw (C) or whole barley grain plus protein supplement (WB). Six lambs from each treatment were slaughtered at 10 and 30 days post weaning after 15N labelling of microbial nitrogen (N) and PB. Microbial contribution to digesta non-ammonia N (NAN) and PB was lower (P < 0·01) when estimated from duodenal rather than abomasal samples (0·36 v. 0·52 (s.e.d. 0·021) for NAN and 0·47 v. 0·77 (s.e.d. 0·029) for PB) as a result of endogenous contamination. In comparison with 15N, total PB/N led to higher estimates (P < 0·01) of microbial contribution to abomasal NAN in WB treatment (0·62 v. 0·46 s.e.d. 0·049). The difference was removed after correcting for microbial PB, while this effect was not observed with < the C diet, resulting in a marker by diet interaction (P < 0·05). Abomasal PB flow increased (P < 0·1) from 10 to 30 days after weaning mainly due to the higher proportion of microbial PB (0·70 v. 0·81 (s.e.d. 0·047)). Rumen apparent PB degradation did not differ between diets in older lambs, but it was proportionally 0·39 lower for WB treatment (P < 0·05) in younger lambs. When the microbial PB flow was estimated indirectly from labelled microbial N and the PB/N ratio of bacterial extracts the estimates were in agreement with those derived from PB-15N in the WB treatment but resulted in unrealistic values in lambs on diet C. Results suggest that significant proportions of dietary PB can escape rumen degradation which may lead to overestimation of microbial contribution to abomasal NAN when the PB/N ratio is used as marker. The extent of the overestimation is affected by the lamb age and grain processing.

The objectives of this study were to infer phenotypic causal networks involving gestation length (GL) and calving difficulty (CD) for the primiparity of 1850 Japanese Black heifers, and the birth weight (BWT), withers height (WH) and chest girth (CHG) of their full blood calves, and to compare the causal effects among them. The inductive causation (IC) algorithm was employed to search for causal links among these traits; it was applied to the posterior distribution of the residual (co)variance matrix of a multiple-trait sire-maternal grand sire (MGS) model. The IC algorithm implemented with 95% and 90% highest posterior density intervals detected only one structure with links between GL and BWT (WH or CHG) and between BWT (WH or CHG) and CD, although their directions were not resolved. Therefore, a possible causal structure based on the networks obtained from the IC algorithm [GL→BWT (WH or CHG)→CD] was fitted using a structural equation model to infer causal structure coefficients between the traits. The structural coefficients of GL on BWT and of BWT on GL on the observable scale showed that an extra day of GL led to a 270-g gain in BWT, and a 1-kg increase in BWT increased the risk for dystocia by 1.1%, in the causal structure. Similarly, an increase in GL by 1 day resulted in a 2.1 (2.0)-mm growth in WH (CHG), and a 1-cm increase in WH (CHG) increased the risk of dystocia by 1.2% (0.9%). The structural equation model was also fitted to alternative causal structures, which involved the addition of a directed link from GL to CD, or GL→CD to the structures described above. The inferred structural coefficients with the alternative structures were almost the same as the corresponding ones that had GL→BWT (WH or CHG)→CD. However, the direct causal effect of the extra link from GL on CD was similar to the indirect causal effect of GL through the mediating effect of BWT (WH or CHG) on CD and significant (P<0.05). This suggest that maternal genetic effects might not be removed completely from the residual variance components in the sire-MGS model, and the application of the IC algorithm to the variances from the model could detect an incorrect structure. Nonetheless, fitting the structural equation model to the causal structure provided useful information such as the magnitude of the causal effects between the traits.

A breeding experiment in Coopworth sheep where selection was applied to backfat depth was evaluated after 14 years (1981-94). There were three self-replacing lines, two selected for increased or decreased subcutaneous fat depth, and an unselected control (average size = 51 ewes per line per year). Reproductive traits, ewe body weight and ewe fleece weight were monitored in each line as potential correlated responses. In the last 4 years studied, the fat (F), control (C) and lean (L) lines differed significantly in the proportion of ewes lambing (0·87, 0·93, 0·94 respectively), litter size at birth (1·64, 1·83 and 1·89), and lamb survival up to weaning, unadjusted for birth rank and sex (0·88, 0·81 and 0·74). The overall reproductive trait, lambs weaned per ewe joined (1·22, 1·33 and 1·26), did not differ significantly among lines. From pre-mating weights of ewes present in 1993 or 1994, means for mature ewes by line were 60·1, 62·4 and 63·3 kg, respectively (P < 0·01). Means for weight at scanning time (7 months of age) by line, as a proportion of mature weight were: 0·533, 0·561 and 0·559, respectively (P < 0·05). There were also significant line differences in ewe fleece weights, with the 1993 and 1994 data averaging 3·93, 4·05 and 4·27 kg respectively (P < 0·01). For weight of lamb weaned per ewe weaning at least one lamb, the L line had a 0·09 higher mean proportionally than the F line (P < 0·05), but for a composite trait which was a weighted combination of weight of lambs weaned and ewe fleece weight per ewe joined (with or without allowance for different ewe live weights), the L line was no longer significantly different from the F line. Repeatabilities and single-record heritabilities were also estimated for various ewe traits. The implications are that lean-lamb selection would be associated with only small changes in net reproduction, ewe fleece weight and live weight, but larger differences would be expected from selection in the opposite direction.

Two groups each of six lambs of the fat-tailed Naeimi breed, well adapted to a semi-arid climate, were housed under semi-controlled temperature (43·2 to 43·8°C) with low relative humidity (<0·8). After a 1-week adaptation period, the first group (control) was injected subcutaneously with 1 ml vehicle solution of 40% ethanol in saline, twice daily at 08.00 and 17.00 hfor the 11-day experimental period. In the other group, each lamb was injected daily for 6 days with 0·18 mg/kg per day of the prolactin inhibitor, 2 bromo-a-ergocryptine (CB154) dissolved in the vehicle solution. Treatment during the next 5 days was as for the control animals. Rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), water and food intakes were recorded before injections. Daily average data were used in the statistical analysis, except those of the 1st day of bromocryptine injection. Lambs of the control group were able to maintain their RT (39·5 (s.e. 0·04) °C) during heat exposure, but those treated with the bromocryptine could not (40·3 (s.e. 0·07) °C). However, the latter group continued to respire more rapidly (P < 0·01) after cessation of the CB154 treatment, reducing their body temperature slightly (39·9 (s.e. 0·06) °C). This shows that, following prolactin suppression, heat-stressed lambs were unable to regulate their body temperature despite their RR. Water intake did not change during bromocryptine treatment, but the ratio of water to dry-matter intake did increase due to lower food consumption. These results suggest that prolactin might have an important role in thermoregulation of the fat-tailed male sheep during elevated ambient temperature.

Most often, farmers consider red clover an unattractive forage because of its low ensilability. Nevertheless, several in vivo and in vitro experiments also showed advantages of red clover silages such as decreased rumen biohydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. This has been attributed to a possible protective role of protein-bound phenols, with polyphenol oxidase playing a key role in their formation. This enzyme is active in red clover, but not in other green forages, such as, for example, perennial ryegrass. Therefore, the aim was to study the lipid metabolism within red clover/ryegrass mixtures in lab scale silages and during in vitro rumen batch incubations. Ensilability of red clover increased with higher proportions of ryegrass in the silage mixture. However, the lipid-protecting mechanism of red clover does not seem to occur in the co-ensiled ryegrass as lipolysis of polar lipids linearly increased with increasing proportions of ryegrass (86.0%, 91.6%, 89.9%, 93.1% and 95.6% in 60-day-old silages with 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100 red clover/ryegrass, respectively). Rumen lipolysis and biohydrogenation of C18:3n-3 and C18:2n-6 were negatively related to red clover proportions in the silage mixtures. The lipid-protective mechanism in red clover silages is confirmed, but it seems not to be transferred to lipids in co-ensiled forages.
