Forty Hereford cross steers of 350 kg live weight were allocated to 10 treatments in which straw was offered ad libitum. The straws comprised two varieties of winter barley (Gerbel (G) an Igri (I)), two varieties of spring barley (Corgi (C) and Golden Promise (GP)) and one variety of winter wheat (Norman (N)). Each straw was offered either untreated (with 20 g urea per kg added at feeding), or treated (with 30 g anhydrous ammonia). After 10 weeks the treatments were changed. The mean growth rates for steers receiving the untreated straws were 0·11, 0·13, 0·40, 0·20 and 0·27 kg/day and for treated straws were 0·36, 0·33, 0·61, 0·60 and 0·52 kg/day for G, I, C, GP and N respectively. The straw intakes for untreated straws were 3·4, 3·6, 5·2, 4·4 and 4·6 kg dry matter per day and for treated straws 4·7, 4·8, 5·9, 4·9 and 5·8 kg dry matter per day for G, I, C, GP and N respectively. Chemical and biological measurements were compared as predictors of voluntary intake of straw and growth rate in the steers. Biological measurements were very efficient in predicting performance of the steers while chemical measurements were much less valuable.

A group of 16 Romney wether sheep fitted with rumen and abomasal cannulae and aged 11 to 12 months was allocated to either high or low crude protein (CP) pelleted diets (220 (HP) and 120 (LP) g CP per kg) to give four daily intakes of dry matter (356, 711, 1067 and 1422 g) within each diet, giving two sheep per treatment. Diets were given hourly for 40 days during which time growth rates, plasma concentrations of insulin (I) and growth hormone (GH) were determined, a glucose tolerance test was performed and relative rates of fatty acid (FA) synthesis were determined.

Live-weight changes ranged from –46 to 215 g/day and wool growth ranged from 86 to 210 mg per 100 cm2 daily.

Plasma GH concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0·001) in sheep given LP diets (21·2 (s.e. 4·2) μg/1) than in those given HP diets (10·1 (s.e. 1·8) μg/1) and negatively correlated with both energy (E) (r = –0·62; P < 0·01) and nitrogen (N) (r = –0·63; P < 0·01) intakes which proportionately accounted for 0·47 of the variance in plasma GH concentration (P < 0·01). Plasma I concentrations were higher (P < 0·05) in sheep given HP diets (2·77 (s.e. 0·34) μg/1) than in sheep given LP diets (1·86 (s.e. 0·23) μg/1). Intakes of E and N proportionately accounted for 0·38 of variance in I concentration which was primarily determined by N intake.

After intravenous infusion of glucose (150 mg/min) for 30 min, significant differences in the rate at which plasma glucose and I concentrations declined to pre-infusion levels were evident with different daily intakes of the pelleted diets.

Synthesis of FA in adipose tissue was on average 1·7 times more rapid in sheep given HP than in sheep given LP diets (P < 0·05) and increased approximately three-fold with increasing intake. Partial correlations showed differences in E and N intakes were able to account for 0·73 (P < 0·01) of the variance in FA synthesis rates, with N intake having a greater influence than E intake (partial correlations: r = 0·53; P < 0·05 and r = 0·35; P > 0·05 respectively).

In order to investigate differences in carcass and meat quality between lines of different stress susceptibility, 150 pigs were slaughtered on 15 slaughter days, consisting of equal numbers of stress-susceptible (nn) pigs of a boar line, stress-resistant (NN) pigs of a sow line and stress-carrier (Nn) crosses of these two lines. Carcass quality was determined by a SKGII-device which combined four physical measurements into a carcass lean estimate and a conformation score, and meat quality traits were measured on the carcass and on a loin slice. Killing-out proportion was lower for the NN line compared with the Nn crosses and the nn line. Lean content increased and conformation score improved as the number of n alleles in the respective genotypes increased but the Nn genotype was closer to the nn genotype than to the NNgenotype. Similarly, a large difference in meat quality was found between the NN and the nn line, whereas the difference in meat quality between the Nn and the nn genotype was smaller than expected. This was probably due to the low-voltage stunning procedure. In addition, the method of transporting the pigs to the abattoir (by truck or by foot, for a distance 125 m) had a pronounced effect on meat quality in the loin.

Using extensions to Robertson's (1957) method for finding the optimum test design, factors affecting the improvement from testing were studied. Other than the heritability, the ratio of the number tested (N) to the number required for breeding stock (T) has the largest effect on the improvement expected, the improvement being roughly proportional to the logarithm of this ratio. The type of family and the number in the test group which compose the optimum design, also depend largely on the ratio N/T. Accuracy in evaluation is required when only few animals are selected (N/T high), but small test groups from large families are necessary when large numbers of breeding stock are required (N/T low).

Testing schemes differ basically in their selection procedure and only secondarily in their designs. The advantage resulting from the tested animals being themselves selected is in proportion to what part they constitute of the total selected.

Another consideration is how the testing is integrated with the population breeding structure. Maximum improvement will be obtained if the testing facilities are restricted to a nucleus group of breeders, and full opportunity for selection is made in their stocks. The increased improvement this providesis accumulated in this nucleus group of herds and gradually passed down to the rest of the herds. Otherwise the improvement will be greatest when each breeder can use sires from families which have performed well in thetesting.

Mid-pregnancy shearing has consistently been shown to increase lamb birth weight, which can lead to an increase in lamb survival rates. However, shearing ewes during the winter months and under outdoor pastoral farming conditions can expose the recently shorn ewe to a greater risk of hypothermia. The aim of this study was to determine if exposure of ewes to repeated stressors, in mid- and late pregnancy, would result in an increase in lamb birth weight. This information may assist in the elucidation of the mechanism for the birth weight response to mid-pregnancy shearing, which in turn could assist in the design of management options to increase lamb birth weight without placing the ewe at risk. One hundred and forty-four twin-bearing Romney ewes were allocated to one of six mid-pregnancy treatments: control, isolation on 2 or 10 occasions, sham-shearing on 10 occasions, intramuscular cortisol injection on 10 occasions or shearing. Isolation, sham-shearing and cortisol treatments were conducted twice a week beginning, on average, day 74 of pregnancy and shearing occurred on day 76. During pregnancy, ewe treatment had no effect on ewe live weight. However, average ewe body condition scores were higher in the shorn group than in the sham-shorn or cortisol groups (P < 0.05). Intramuscular injections of cortisol had a greater effect on ewe plasma cortisol concentrations than all other treatments (P < 0.05). Shearing produced a greater plasma cortisol response than isolation × 10 and sham-shearing (P < 0.05). Ewe plasma cortisol responses decreased during the 5 weeks of isolation and sham-shearing but cortisol injections produced a greater response during the fifth treatment than the first or ninth treatments (P < 0.05). Lambs born to shorn ewes were heavier and had a longer crown rump, forelimb and hind limb lengths than all other lambs (P < 0.05). In addition, lambs born to ewes in the cortisol treatment were lighter than lambs born to control, isolation × 2, isolation × 10 and shorn ewes (P < 0.05). The plasma cortisol concentrations observed for ewes injected with cortisol were far greater than those observed in all other groups, which is likely to explain the low birth weights of lambs born to ewes in that group. These results indicate that the mechanism by which mid-pregnancy shearing increases lamb birth weight is unlikely to be repeated stressors.

Three trials were conducted to determine the optimum dietary lysine concentration for maximum growth rate (ADG) or minimum food conversion ratio (FCR) of boars and gilts from 60 to 90 kg (in pairs) and 80 to 100 kg (in pairs or groups). Ninety pairs of pigs and six treatments (dietary lysine concentrations) were used in experiment 1 (60 to 90 kg), 144 pairs and eight treatments in experiment 2 (80 to 100 kg) and groups of 13 pigs (no.=42 groups) and six treatments in experiment 3 (80 to 100 kg). Experiments were arranged as randomized-block designs, blocked on the basis of sex and start weight. Isoenergetic diets (13·8 MJ digestible energy per kg) were based on barley, wheat, soya-bean meal, with added vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Dietary lysine concentrations were: 7·9, 8·8, 9·7, 10·7, 11·7 and 12·5 g/kg in experiment 1; 7·0, 7·9, 8·8, 9·7, 10·7, 11·7, 12·5 and 13·5 g/kg in experiment 2; and 7·0, 7·9, 8·8, 9·7, 10·7 and 11·7 g/kg in experiment 3. In experiment 1 (60 to 90 kg pairs), ADG increased (quadratic, P<0·01) and FCR improved (quadratic, P<0·001) with increased lysine concentration. Although boars grew faster (P<0·001) and were more efficient (P<0·001) than gilts, maximum ADG was predicted at 10·8 g lysine per kg and minimum FCR at 10·9 g lysine per kg for all pigs. In experiment 2 (80 to 100 kg pairs), a treatment×sex interaction for ADG (P<0·01) and FCR (P<0·05) indicated that boars grew faster and had better FCR than gilts at dietary lysine concentrations above 10·7 and 9·7 g/kg respectively, with no difference between the sexes below these lysine levels. Maximum ADG was predicted at 11·8 and 9·9 g lysine per kg and minimum FCR was predicted at 11·9 and 10·0 g lysine per kg for boars and gilts, respectively. In experiment 3 (80 to 100 kg groups) ADG increased (quadratic, P<0·01) and FCR improved (quadratic, P<0·001) as dietary lysine concentration increased. Boars had higher ADG (P<0·001) and better FCR (P<0·001) than gilts. Maximum ADG and minimum FCR were predicted at 9·3 and 9·6 g lysine per kg for all pigs. In conclusion, boars grew faster and more efficiently than gilts, with interactions in experiment 2 indicating a greater difference in performance at higher dietary lysine concentrations.

An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of mating at puberty or third oestrus or after pre-mating oestrogen and progestagen therapy, designed to mimic the changes that occur in plasma oestrogen and progesterone concentrations during the 1st, 2nd or 3rd oestrous cycles, on fertility in ewe lambs. Twenty-five ewe lambs were mated at puberty on mean date of 18 October and 21 were mated at third oestrus on 3 December. Of these, 28% and 81% of animals mated at puberty and third oestrus lambed, respectively (P < 0·05). A similar number of ewe lambs were mated within 24 h of ram introduction in the groups given one, two or three consecutive applications oestrogen and progestagen (25 μg oestradiol benzoate followed 48 h later by a progestagen pessary left in situ for days). Of the 43 corpora lutea, 21 were represented by viable embryos in the 37 animals holding to service after one application compared with 34 out of 46 corpora lutea in 40 animals given three applications (P < 0·05). Furthermore, embryo crown-rump length, embryo weight and amniotic sac width was greater (P < 0·05), on day of pregnancy, in animals given one compared with three applications of oestrogen and progestagen. These results demonstrate that fertility is improved in ewe lambs mated on third oestrus or after progestagen and oestrogen therapy designed to simulate three oestrous cycles.

The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of transfer of selenium (Se) to plasma and milk from inorganic sodium selenite, either free or microencapsulated, and from selenized yeast in dairy cows. The study consisted of an in situ-nylon bags incubation, and in an in vivo experiment to compare the Se status of cows supplemented with either sodium selenite, microencapsulated sodium selenite, or Se yeast. Thirty dairy cows, divided in five groups, were fed the following diets: the control group (CTR) received a total mixed ration supplemented with sodium selenite in order to have 0.3 mg/kg DM of total Se; 0.3M and 0.5M groups received the same control diet supplemented with lipid microencapsulated sodium selenite to provide 0.3 and 0.5 mg/kg DM of total Se, respectively; 0.3Y and 0.5Y groups received selenized yeast to provide 0.3 and 0.5 mg/kg of total Se, respectively. Cows were fed the supplements for 56 days during which milk, blood, and fecal samples were collected weekly to conduct analysis of Se and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activity. Se concentration in the nylon bags was assessed to 72%, 64%, and 40% of the initial value (time 0) after 4, 8, and 24 h of incubation, respectively. In vivo, cows supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg of microencapsulated Se had higher milk Se concentration compared to CTR. The increment was more pronounced at the highest inclusion rate (0.5 mg/kg, 0.5M group). GSH-px activity was not significantly affected by treatments. The results indicate that lipid microencapsulation has the potential to protect nutrients from complete rumen reduction and that Se from microencapsulated selenite is incorporated in milk more efficiently than the free form. Microencapsulated sodium selenite was shown to be comparable to Se-yeast in terms of availability and incorporation in milk when fed at 0.3 mg/kg DM, whereas the inclusion in the diet at 0.5 mg/kg DM resulted in higher plasma and milk concentrations than selenized yeast.

The length of the oestrous cycle and plasma progesterone concentration in Ethiopian Highland zebu cows were monitored after treatment with prostaglandin F2α (PGF) (25 mg Lutalyse®) 12 days after spontaneous oestrus. PGF induced luteolysis followed by a significant drop in progesterone values to proportionately 0·11, 0·04 and 0·03 of the pre-treatment values (range 6·3 to 11·4 μg/l) within 24, 48 and 72 h of PGF injection, respectively (P < 0·001). PGF treatment resulted in oestrus within 72 to 120 h and did not influence the length of the subsequent oestrous cycle (P > 0·05). Mean oestrous cycle length was 19·4 (s.d. 1·3) days. There was good correlation (r = 0·72) between the length of consecutive cycles in the same cow and the amount of progesterone the cow produced on the same day in the cycles (r = 0·69 to 0·95). As a result, a close relationship (r = 0·74) existed in the total amount of progesterone produced in consecutive cycles. These data suggest that events following PGF treatment in Ethiopian Highland zebu cows closely parallel those observed in natural cycles. Two-thirds of the spontaneous heats exhibited elevated progesterone values 2 days prior to oestrus onset.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by various species of Aspergillus and Penicillium. Ochratoxin A was classified as a group 2B carcinogen and is one of the major intestinal pathogenic mycotoxins. One of the most frequent modes of intoxication is consumption of contaminated food with mycotoxins. Feed represents the major cost and has a direct impact on the economical viability of broiler’s production system, since it must contain the necessary elements that allow the animal to express the maximum genetic potential while providing its nutritional requirements. Thus, the animal has to digest the feed and absorb its nutrients, which is in direct correlation with the gastrointestinal tract, especially the small intestine and the development of the mucosal surface area. Once ingested, OTA is absorbed by passive diffusion, mainly the jejunum. Ochratoxin A’s presence affects lipid membranes and could lead to the degradation of their normal structure and functionality. All of these effects contribute to the development of malabsorption. It was very interesting to study the effect of OTA on the layer of phospholipids of the bowel. The experimental group received OTA (0.05 to mg/kg BW) through an intra-peritoneal injection, every other day for 21 days. We noted that feed conversion ratio and average daily gain were reduced. Histological studies showed important alterations at the level of the mucosal membrane of the intestine (villosities, crypts) following intra-peritoneal administration of the mycotoxin. Thinning and enlargement at the base of the villosities, hyperplasia and crypts in irregular forms, blunting and denudation were observed through the examination of intestinal morphology. Biochemical studies, such as total lipid and phospholipid compositions, allowed us to have more detailed results. All identified mucosal phospholipids were modified, particularly the phosphatidylcholine (PC) and the phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) in the jejunum mucosa. In fact, there was a decrease by 55.81% for PC, 56.66% for PE, while a significant increase by 32.91% was noted for phosphatidylserine in the jejunum. It was very interesting to study the effect of OTA on the phospholipids layer of the bowel, as the mucous membrane of the small intestine represents the main site of absorption and transformation of nutriments. To avoid such disturbances and prevent the effects of the OTA, precautions must be taken to inhibit mold growth at the level of the feed manufactory units. Phosphatidylcholine and PE administrations may represent an option that could allow reestablishment of phospholipid equilibrium in the intestine.

The effect of fibre level in protein-free diets on the recovery and amino acid composition of endogenous protein collected from the ileum in pigs was studied. Although the Heal nitrogen excretion increased slightly with dietary fibre level, no significant difference was observed on the amino acid recovery between diets containing 30, 60,90 or 120 g wood cellulose per kg.

In order to investigate the antagonism between meat quantity and quality, halothane-positive (HP) and -negative (HN) Belgian Landrace pigs (B) and Pietrain × Belgian Landrace crosses (PB) were compared for several carcass and meat quality traits. They originated from three commercial farms and were slaughtered in a commercial abattoir. Carcass quality was determined by a SKGlI-device. Meat quality traits were measured on the warm and cold carcass, and on a loin slice. HP and PB pigs showed better carcass quality, and inferior meat quality, compared with HN and B pigs respectively. No significant halothane sensitivity × breed interaction was apparent for most traits. Sex did not affect meat quality. Slaughter day variance was considerable. The inverse relationship between lean content or conformation score and meat quality was generally more pronounced in the HP group compared to the HN group (except for drip and cooking losses). Irrespective of halothane status, carcass conformational score was more negatively related to meat quality than was lean content.

The presence of the fermentable sugar d-mannitol in the diet improves nitrogen (N) utilization in rabbits. To clarify the mechanism by which d-mannitol improves N utilization, we studied the effect of d-mannitol on the fate of blood urea N in growing rabbits. Growing rabbits received a control diet or a diet containing d-mannitol, which were formulated by adding 80 g/kg glucose or d-mannitol to timothy hay. After 9 days of feeding of the experimental diets, 15N-urea was administrated intravenously under anesthesia 1 h before slaughter. The blood urea level (concentration of both urea N (43.6% of the control group (CG), P < 0.05) and 15N (95% of the CG, P < 0.05) in blood serum) was reduced in the mannitol group. The concentration and amount of N, and 15N atom % excess in the contents of the cecum and colon were higher (P < 0.05) in the rabbits fed the mannitol diet than in rabbits fed the control diet, especially in the cecum. The consumption of mannitol caused bacterial proliferation in the cecum characterized by marked short-chain fatty acid production (165% of the CG, P < 0.05), decreased cecal ammonia N (73% of the CG, P < 0.05) and elevated cecal bacterial N (150% of the CG, P < 0.05). On the other hand, addition of d-mannitol to the diet decreased N (80% of the CG, P < 0.05) and 15N (77% of the CG, P < 0.05) excretion in the urine. These results indicate that d-mannitol increases the transfer of blood urea N to the large intestine, where it is used for bacterial N synthesis.

In order to determine the relative nutritional value of rapeseed meal (var. Tandem) in comparison with soya-bean meal and fish meal, seven barley-based diets were formulated to provide 13·1 MJ digestible energy and 8·8 g total lysine per kg. They contained soya-bean meal (S), rapeseed meal (R) or fish meal (F) alone, or equal proportions (on a total nitrogen basis) of soya and rapeseed, soya and fish meal, rapeseed and fish meal or soya, rapeseed and fish meal. The study involved 14 pigs growing from 40 to 90 kg, each fitted with a T cannula in the terminal ileum. Dietary treatments were applied during 7-day periods according to a 7 × 7 Latin-square design, replicated twice. The pigs were fed at 12-h intervals. Ileal digesta were collected during two 12-h periods from each pig after adaptation to each diet. Nutrient apparent digestibilities were measured using chromium III oxide as a marker; for diets S, R and F, respectively, values were: dry matter, 0·58, 0·51 and 0·66 (s.e. 0·014); N, 0·72, 0·67 and 0·73 (s.e. 0·011); lysine, 0·79, 0·72 and 0·83 (s.e. 0·010), with a similar relationship between diets for most other amino acids. In general, values for diets containing combinations of the protein supplements were intermediate between those for diets containing the respective single supplements. Following the main trial, seven pigs were given a semi-purified diet containing rapeseed meal as the only protein source; this gave amino acid digestibility values similar to or slightly higher than diet R. Diet R, which contained 375 g rapeseed meal per kg, presented no palatability problem. Rapeseed meal of the quality used in this trial could contribute a substantial proportion of the protein supplement for growing pigs. Its value should be enhanced by formulating diets according to the ileal digestibility of the limiting amino acids.

Ninety-two gilts in replicates of four littermates were mated at puberty at a mean live weight and age of 95 kg and 191 days respectively. The littermates were allocated at random to one of four food allowances (kg/day) during four successive gestations: (A) 1·5, (B) 2·0 in parity 1 followed by 1·5 in subsequent parities, (C) 20 and (D) 2·5. A diet calculated to contain 12·7 MJ digestible energy per kg was fed throughout gestation, the 2-week lactation and from weaning to conception.

The numbers of sows which conceived at parity 5 when the experiment terminated were 10, 12, 13 and 16 for treatments A to D respectively. Sow live weight at conception differed significantly (P < 0·01) from parity 2 onwards: the maximum live weights of sows on treatments A and B did not exceed 130 to 135 kg, but the live weights of sows on treatment D continued to increase to reach 195 kg at the end of the experiment. The in vivo skin plus subcutaneous fat thickness at the P2 location differed significantly (P < 0·001) between treatments from parity 2 onwards, decreasing by 3 mm in treatment A and increasing by 6 mm in treatment D from the start of the experiment to conception at parity 4. The interval from weaning to conception was significantly (P < 0·05) lower in treatment B in parity 2. This was the only significant effect and was contrary to the tendency for the interval to increase as the food allowance in gestation was decreased. The numbers of pigs born alive, stillborn or weaned (including fostered pigs) were not significantly affected by treatment. Birth weight and post-natal growth rates were significantly (P < 0·05) increased after parity 1 as gestation food allowance increased, with the exception of the post-natal growth rate in parity 3. Overall birth weight was increased by 018 kg per pig and weaning weight by 0·93 kg per pig on treatment D compared with treatment A.

The objective of this study was to determine if weight and age at weaning affect the response of pigs to inclusion of cooked cereal in their post-weaning diet. In experiment 1, pigs (no. = 116) weaned at 17 to 28 days of age and weighing between 4 and 10 kg were individually given for 28 days post weaning, diets based on: (1) uncooked cereal or (2) cooked cereal (steamed and flaked wheat and maize). The gelatinized starch proportion was 0•265, 0•838, 0•203 and 0•745 for uncooked maize, steam flaked maize, uncooked wheat and steam flaked wheat, respectively. Pigs were offered 2•5 kg of starter diet (16•1 MJ digestible energy (DE) per kg and 17•4 g/kg of lysine). This was followed in each case by link diet (15•2 MJ DE per kg and 16•2 g/kg of lysine) to 28 days post weaning. Thereafter, pigs were grouped and given a common weaner diet and a common finisher diet to slaughter. In experiment 2, pigs (no. = 408) were weaned at between 20 and 28 days of age. Pigs were allocated by weight to heavy (7 to 8 kg), medium (6 to 7 kg) and light (5 to 6 kg) groups (24 groups of 17 pigs) and assigned to treatments as in experiment 1 for 26 days. A common weaner diet was offered between day 26 and day 56. In experiment 1, pig weight, food intake, daily gain, food conversion efficiency and carcass measurements were not affected by cooking (P > 0•05). Regression analysis indicated that weight and age at weaning had a significant association with weight at 28 days post weaning for uncooked (R2 = 0•628; P < 0•001) and cooked (R2 = 0•579; P < 0•001) cereal diets. In experiment 2, there was no interaction between weaning weight and cooking (P > 0•05) and no performance benefit resulted from cooking (P > 0•05). In conclusion, steam flaking did not improve pig performance during the treatment period or at any subsequent period.

A 2 X 3 factorial experiment was designed to study the consequences of feeding strategy during rearing and pregnancy over eight parities on sow growth and body condition. Two hundred and fifty-four gilts were group-fed on a restricted scale rising to either 2·25 (L) or 2·70 (H) kg/day (12·5 MJ/kg digestible energy (DE), 193 g/kg crude protein (CP) diet) from 70 to 175 days of age. A total of 156 of the L and H gilts were then given either 1·8 (l), 2·1 (m) or 2·4 (h) kg/day during subsequent pregnancies (12·9 MJ/kg DE; 177 g/kg CP diet). The same diet was offered to a standard scale during lactation. Sows were group-housed in pregnancy and given straw bedding. Losses of sows in rearing and each parity were not associated with treatment. After rearing, data have been presented only for those sows which completed eight parities. At 175 days of age, H gilts had grown faster (P < 0·001). From 175 days to service all gilts were given the same feeding regime but L gilts put on significantly more weight than H gilts, exhibiting more efficient utilization of food. There were no statistically significant differences in weights between L and H sows after the third pregnancy but L sows gained more weight than H sows in most pregnancies. The sows grew in each parity, indicating mature body size was not achieved. The pregnancy regimes had a significant (P < 0·05) effect on live weight, P2 backfat measurement, body length, neck circumference and condition score. Pregnancy treatment h produced the heavier and fatter animals but not all treatment l sows maintained adequate backfat levels for six parities. When housed in groups and given a generous supply of straw, the nutritional requirements of sows to sustain growth and body condition suitable for a long life may be less than has been previously identified for sows housed on concrete and slats without bedding.

The improvement of carcass quality is one of the main breeding goals in pig production. To select appropriate breeding animals, it is of major concern to exactly and reliably analyze the body composition in vivo. Therefore, the objective of the study was to examine whether the combination of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers the opportunity to reliably analyze quantitative and qualitative body composition characteristics of different pig breeding groups in vivo. In this study, a total of 77 pigs were studied by DXA and MRI at an average age of 154 days. The pigs originated from different autochthonous or conventional breeds or crossbreeds and were grouped into six breed types: Cerdo Ibérico (Ib); Duroc × Ib (Du_Ib); White Sow Lines (WSL, including German Landrace and German Large White); Hampshire/Pietrain (Pi_Ha, including Hampshire, Pietrain × Hampshire (PiHa) and Pietrain × PiHa); Pietrain/Duroc (Pi_Du, including Pietrain × Duroc (PiDu) and Pietrain × PiDu); crossbred WSL (PiDu_WSL, including Pietrain × WSL and PiDu × WSL). A whole-body scan was performed by DXA with a GE Lunar DPX-IQ in order to measure the amount and percentage of fat tissue (FM; %FM), lean tissue (LM; %LM) and bone mineral, whereas a Siemens Magnetom Open with a large body coil was used for MRI in the thorax region between 13th and 14th vertebrae in order to measure the area of the loin (LA) and the above back fat area (FA) of both body sides. A GLM procedure using SAS 9.2 was used to analyze the data. As expected, the native breed Ib followed by Du_Ib crossbreeds showed the highest %FM (27.2%, 25.0%) combined with the smallest LA (46.2 cm2, 73.6 cm2), whereas Ib had the lowest BW at an average age of 154 days. Pigs with Pi_Ha origin presented the least %FM (12.4%) and largest LA (99.5 cm2). The WSL and PiDu_WSL showed an intermediate body composition. Therefore, it could be concluded that DXA and MRI and especially their combination are very suitable methods to reliably identify differences in body composition and carcass traits among different pig lines in vivo.

A survey of albumin polymorphism in the major breeds of cattle in the British Isles is described. Four and probably five alleles have been found. AlbA is the common type in all breeds. AlbB occurs with less than 1 % frequency in all breeds except Sussex and Charolais, where it has a frequency of 12% and 16% respectively. The possible implications of this finding are discussed. The other alleles AlbC(Ed) and AlbD are extremely rare, and are confined to a few animals each within one breed. AlbG has been tentatively proposed as the name for a new albumin type.

The success in competitions may be stressful for animals and costly in terms of immune functions and longevity. Focusing on Aosta Chestnut and Aosta Black Pied cattle, selected for their fighting ability in traditional competitions, this study investigated the genetic relationships of fighting ability with udder health traits (somatic cell score and two threshold traits for somatic cells), longevity (length of productive life and number of calvings) and test-day milk, fat and protein yield. Herdbook information and phenotypic records that have been routinely collected for breeding programs in 16 years were used for the abovementioned traits. Data belonged to 9328 cows and 19 283 animals in pedigree. Single-trait animal model analyses were run using a Gibbs sampling algorithm to estimate the variance components of traits, and bivariate analyses were then performed to estimate the genetic correlations. Moderate positive genetic correlations (ra) were found for fighting ability with somatic cell score (ra=0.255), suggesting that greater fighting ability is genetically related to a detriment in udder health, in agreement with the theory. The high positive genetic correlation between fighting ability and longevity (average ra=0.669) suggests that the economic importance of fighting ability (the winning cows get an higher price at selling) had probably masked the true genetic covariances. The genetic correlation between milk yield traits and fighting ability showed large intervals, but the negative values (average ra=−0.121) agreed with previous research. This study is one of the few empirical studies on genetic correlations for the competitive success v. immune functions and longevity traits. The knowledge of the genetic correlations among productive and functional traits of interest, including fighting ability, is important in animal breeding for a sustainable genetic improvement.
