Uterine capacity was estimated in Chinese Meishan (MS), Large White (LW) and crossbred (LW × MS) sows, using unilateral liysterectomy-ovariectomy (UHO) methods. In the first two parities, 20 sows of each genotype, whose left uterine horn and ovary had been removed in the post-pubertal period, were mated, their ovulation rate recorded by laparoscopy and allowed to farrow normally. In the third parity the mated sows were slaughtered at around 30 days of pregnancy and ovarian, uterine and embryo traits were recorded. The ovulation rate in UHO females was similar to that observed previously in intact females of the same population, MS sows producing 4·2 (s.e. 1·0) more ova at parities 1 and 2 and 7·0 (s.e. 1·9) more ova at parity 3 than LW sows. At parity 3, MS sows had 5·9 (s.e. 2·0) more viable embryos at 30 days of pregnancy than LW sows. Crossbred sows were intermediate for both ovulation rate and the number of viable embryos at 30 days. At the first two parities, litter size was higher in the MS by 1·0 (s.e. 0·8) piglets per litter than in the LW, while the crossbred sows exceeded the mid-breed mean by 1·7 (s.e. 0·7) piglets. Uterine capacity, estimated as twice the number of piglets carried to term in a single horn, was 12 foetuses in the LW, 14 in the MS and 16 in the crossbred sow. Piglets born to MS sows were 0·4 (s.e. 0·1) kg lighter than those born to LW sows, with a significantly lower (MS: LW = 0-68, P < 0·01) within-Utter standard deviation, which was found to be independent of the smaller mean weight. At parity 3, MS sows were found to have uteri of similar length with both lighter (-0·36 (s.e. 0·14) g) and shorter (-1·54 (s.e. 0·76) mm) embryos with smaller spaces (-7·8 (s.e. 2·7) cm) between embryo sites than LW sows. Within-Utter standard deviations for embryo size traits were lower in MS than in LW sows, especially for the distance between embryo sites (MS: LW = 0·45, P<0·01). The reduced variability of embryo traits in litters in MS sows was independent of their smaller litter means. Third parity litters from crossbred sows were similar to the mid-breed mean for means and variability of embryo traits but crossbred sows had significantly longer uteri (48·5 (s.e. 18·5) cm) than the mid-breed mean, being longer than either pure breed. It was concluded that differences between the pure breeds in uterine capacity may have arisen through better within-uterus organization, whereas the observed heterosis effects may result in part from physically longer uteri in crossbred sows and that uterine capacity contributes to the genotype differences in prenatal survival and prolificacy, especially in crossbred sows.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effects of isoflavone (ISO) against zearalenone (ZEA) residues in the muscle and liver tissues of prepubertal gilts. Seventy 75-day-old, prepubertal, female pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire, 26.5 ± 0.60 kg) were allocated randomly to seven diet treatments for 21days as follows: one control group (fed the basal diet) and six groups fed the basal diet with the addition of either 0.5 or 2.0 mg/kg ZEA plus either 0, 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO. The results showed that the diet with 2.0 mg/kg ZEA added caused an increase of ZEA residue level in muscle tissue (P < 0.05), and that the addition of both 0.5 and 2.0 mg/kg ZEA increased the residue level of ZEA in the liver of prepubertal gilts (P < 0.05). Addition of 600 mg/kg ISO to 2.0 mg/kg ZEA-contaminated diet decreased the ZEA residue level in liver tissue (P < 0.05), and the addition of 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO to the 2.0 mg/kg ZEA-contaminated diet decreased the residue levels of ZEA in muscle tissue (P < 0.05). Western blot analysis demonstrated that feeding ZEA to prepubertal gilts increased their protein expression of 3α/3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD; P < 0.05), and that the addition of 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO to the 2.0 mg/kg ZEA-contaminated diet decreased the protein expression of 3α/3β-HSD (P < 0.05), compared with the addition of 2.0 mg/kg ZEA alone. The results demonstrated that muscle and liver tissues retain residual ZEA when pigs are fed a diet contaminated with high concentrations of ZEA, and that the concentration of ZEA in muscle and liver tissues increased with increased amounts of ZEA in the feed. In diets contaminated with high levels of ZEA, the addition of ISO may accelerate the biotransformation and degradation of ZEA and its metabolites, and reduce the residues of ZEA in liver and muscle tissues of prepubertal gilts.

The protein nutrition of dairy cows is of great importance because of its direct influence on milk production, reproductive efficiency, and feeding cost. Eight first-lactation Holstein cows were randomly assigned to two contemporary 4 × 4 Latin squares in a 2 × 2 factorial design to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean meal with yeast-derived microbial protein (YMP) as a protein source (0% or 1.5% of dry matter (DM)) and its combination with slow-release urea (SRU; 0% or 0.75% of DM) on DM intake and milk production and composition, as well as blood parameters and nitrogen balance. Each experimental period lasted 28 days, with 21 days of adaptation and 7 days of data collection. The diets were formulated to attend the nutritional recommendations of the National Research Council and consisted of 49% forage (47% corn silage and 2% Tifton hay) and 51% concentrate, with 16.8% CP and 1.6 Mcal net energy for lactation/kg DM. For diets without YMP, the inclusion of SRU decreased DM intake, milk production as well as N intake and balance, but did not affect efficiency of production, milk composition or most of blood parameters. On the contrary, for diets with YMP, DM intake and milk production were increased by inclusion of SRU, while minor effects were observed for milk efficiency and composition, blood parameters as well as N intake, excretion and balance. When diets with SRU were compared, the inclusion of YMP increased DM intake, 4% fat-corrected milk, and N intake and balance (P<0.05), with no differences in milk production (kg/day), milk energy, efficiency of milk production or most of the blood parameters. For diets without SRU, YMP inclusion decreased DM intake, milk production, milk energy, N intake, fecal N and N balance (P<0.05), with no effects on milk efficiency and composition, or most of blood parameters. In conclusion, the use of YMP, SRU or both as partial substitutes of soybean meal in the diet of lactating cows has no negative effects on productivity parameters.

In the present study, oocytes retrieved from cross bred Karan Fries cows by ovum pick-up technique were graded into Group 1 and Group 2, based on the morphological appearance of the individual cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs). To analyze whether the developmental potential of the COCs bears a relation to morphological appearance, relative expression of a panel of genes associated with; (a) cumulus–oocyte interaction (Cx43, Cx37, GDF9 and BMP15), (b) fertilization (ZP2 and ZP3), (c) embryonic development (HSF1, ZAR1 and bFGF) and (d) apoptosis and survival (BAX, BID and BCL-XL, MCL-1, respectively) was studied at two stages: germinal vesicle (GV) stage and after in vitro maturation. The competence was further corroborated by evaluating the embryonic progression of the presumed zygotes obtained from fertilization of the graded COCs. The gene expression profile and development rate in pooled A and B grade (Group 1) COCs and pooled C and D grade (Group 2) COCs were determined and compared according to the original grades. The results of the study demonstrated that the morphologically characterized Group 2 COCs showed significantly (P<0.05) lower expression for most of the genes related to cumulus–oocyte interplay, fertilization and embryonic development, both at GV stage as well as after maturation. Group 1 COCs also showed greater expression of anti-apoptotic genes (BCL-XL and MCL1) both at GV stage and after maturation, while pro-apoptotic genes (BAX and BID) showed significantly (P<0.05) elevated expression in poor quality COCs at both the stages. The cleavage rate in Group 1 COCs was significantly higher than that of Group 2 (74.46±7.06 v. 31.57±5.32%). The development of the presumed zygotes in Group 2 oocytes proceeded up to 8- to 16-cell stages only, while in Group 1 it progressed up to morulae (35.38±7.11%) and blastocyst stages (9.70±3.15%), indicating their better developmental potential.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of lamb genotype and plane of nutrition on post-weaning lamb growth, and carcass characteristics in hill sheep systems. The lamb genotypes compared were as follows: purebred Scottish Blackface, Swaledale × Scottish Blackface, Cheviot × Scottish Blackface, Lleyn × Scottish Blackface and Texel × Scottish Blackface lambs. During the finishing period, lambs were allocated to a (i) low plane of nutrition (LP), based on a fixed allowance of dried grass pellets representing a grass-based system; (ii) high plane of nutrition (HP-cereal), with a diet consisting proportionately of 0.20 dried grass pellets : 0.80 cereal-based concentrate offered ad libitum; (iii) high plane of nutrition (HP-cereal/oil), with a diet consisting proportionately of 0.20 dried grass pellets : 0.80 cereal-based concentrate containing oilseed rape offered ad libitum. There were significant genotype × diet interactions for dry matter (DM) intake (P < 0.001), live weight gain (P < 0.05) and carcass gain (P < 0.05). On the LP diet, carcass gains were higher for Texel cross compared to Blackface and Swaledale cross lambs (P < 0.05). On both HP diets, carcass gains were lower in Blackface and Swaledale crosses compared with the Cheviot, Lleyn and Texel cross lambs (P < 0.01). Feed conversion efficiency, expressed in terms of carcass gain per unit of DM, was highest for Texel cross and Cheviot cross, lowest in Swaledale cross and Blackface and intermediate for Lleyn cross lambs (P < 0.001). Conformation classification was lowest for Swaledale cross (P < 0.05) and highest for Texel cross lambs (P < 0.001), whilst those of Blackface, Cheviot and Lleyn cross lambs were similar. Carcasses from Blackface and Lleyn cross lambs had higher fat classifications than Texel and Cheviot cross lambs (P < 0.01). Feed conversion efficiency was lowest with the LP diet compared with the HP diets, resulting in a 5-week longer finishing period and lower carcass weights, fat scores, dressing proportions and subcutaneous fat depth measurements. These results indicate that crossbreeding can have a major effect on lamb performance in the hill sheep sector. Feeding a HP increased lamb growth rates, particularly for high growth-potential genotypes, improved feed efficiency, shortened the finishing period but increased carcass fatness. Including oilseed rape in concentrate-based diets did not affect performance.

Groups of eight Friesian steers were given one of eight diets from 114 to 300 kg live weight. The iso-energetic diets were formulated to supply four levels of protein degradability within two concentrations of crude protein (CP), giving a range of rumen-degradable protein (RDP) and undegradable dietary protein (UDP) concentrations both above and below Agricultural Research Council (1980) recommendations. There were significant (P < 0·05), positive, linear responses of mean daily dry-matter (DM) intake (DMI) (g/kg M°75) to RDP concentration (g/kg DM) for both the low CP diets (DMI = -98·0 + 1·76 (RDP); P = 0·013) and the high CP diets (DMI = -157·5 + 218 (RDP; P = 0017). For the high CP diets, there was a significant (P = 0·045) positive, linear response of live-weight gain (LWG) (kg/day) to UDP concentration (LWG = 0·47 + 0·017 (UDP); P = 0·045). No such response was observed for the low CP diets, where the range of UDP concentrations supplied was smaller than expected. For both the low and high CP diets, LWG decreased as metabolizable energy, UDP and RDP intake increased. These negative responses to nutrient intake were reflected in a wide discrepancy between observed rates of gain and those predicted by current energy and protein nutrition systems. Interactions between food intake and digestive processes, which obstruct effective interpretation of these results, should form an explicit part of any revised protein nutrition scheme.

Androstenone is a steroid pheromone occurring in the pubertal Leydig cells. Breeding against androstenone can decrease pheromone odour in swine meat but appears to cause unwanted side effects such as delayed onset of puberty. To study causality, global gene expression in developing boar testes at 12, 16, 20 and 27 weeks was investigated using a porcine cDNA microarray. The morphological status and androgenic levels of the same individuals have been described in a previous publication. In the present paper, expression of genes and pathways has been analysed with reference to these findings. Nine clusters of genes with significant differential expression over time and 49 functional charts were found in the analysed testis samples. Prominent pathways in the prepubertal testis were associated with tissue renewal, cell respiration and increased endocytocis. E-cadherines may be associated with the onset of pubertal development. With elevated steroidogenesis (weeks 16 to 27), there was an increase in the expression of genes in the MAPK pathway, STAR and its analogue STARD6. A pubertal shift in genes coding for cellular cholesterol transport was observed. Increased expression of meiotic pathways coincided with the morphological onset of puberty. Puberty-related change in Ca(2+) pathway transcripts, neurosteroids, neuronal changes and signalling in redox pathways suggested a developmental-specific period of neuromorphogenesis. Several growth factors were found to increase differentially over time as the testis matured. There may be interactions between MAPK, STAR and growth factors during specific periods. In conclusion, pathways for neurogenesis, morphological pathways and several transcripts for growth factors, which have known modulating effects on steroidogenesis and gonadotropins in humans and rodents, act at specific ages and developmental stages in the boar testis. The age dependency and complexity shown for development-specific testis transcripts must be considered when selecting phenotypic parameters for genetic selection for low androstenone. The results of selection based on measurement of phenotypic maturation and androstenone (or other steroid) levels at one specific age may differ depending on the age used. More research is necessary to find the optimal phenotype to use in order to reduce the unwanted side effects.

To evaluate effects of different concentrations of nanosilver colloid on the cell culture of Sertoli cells, the proportion of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant capacity, nitric oxide (NO) production and genes expression of superoxide dismutases (SOD1 and SOD2) and nitric oxide synthases (eNOS and iNOS) were measured. Sertoli cells were incubated at concentrations of 25, 75 and 125 ppm nanosilver for 48 h. There was progressive lipid peroxidation in treatments according to increasing of nanosilver. Lipid peroxidation, as indicated by malondialdehyde levels, was significantly elevated by the highest concentration of silver colloid (125 ppm), although antioxidant capacity, as measured by ferric ion reduction, was unaffected. Nitrite, as an index of NO production was reduced only in 125 ppm of nanosilver. Expression of SOD1 gene was reduced in nanosilver-treated cells at all concentrations, whereas expression of SOD2 gene was reduced only in cells treated with 125 ppm nanosilver. Expression of iNOS gene was progressively increased with higher concentrations of nanosilver. Expression of eNOS gene was also increased in 125 ppm of nanosilver. In conclusion, toxic effects of nanosilver could be due to high lipid peroxidation and suppression of antioxidant mechanisms via reduced expression of SOD genes and increased expression of NOS genes.

The ability of young rabbits to digest a solid diet was evaluated according to the weaning age: 21 (W21, 12 litters) or 35 (W35, 12 litters) days of age. From 14 days onwards, the rabbits were fed the same pelleted feed. Three methods were compared to estimate the faecal digestibility in the young rabbits, between 24 to 28 and 38 to 42 days. Digestive balance at ileal and faecal levels was determined for the main nutrients provided by milk and solid feed. The W21 rabbits increased their solid feed intake only 2 days after their weaning, when compared with suckling rabbits. Thus, their crude protein (CP) intake remained lower until 26 days compared with the W35 rabbits (from 41%, P < 0.01), as well as their crude fat intake until 28 days (from 72%, P < 0.001). On the contrary, the W35 rabbits increased their solid feed intake without a delay after weaning, quickly reaching the intake level of the W21 rabbits. The amounts of organic matter (OM) and CP reaching the caecum were increased on day 28 by 56% and 42% in the W21 rabbits compared with the W35 rabbits, respectively (P < 0.05), and were similar between groups on day 42. Starch ileal digestibility coefficients were 94·2% and 95·4% in 28- and 42-day-old rabbits, respectively, irrespective of the weaning age. The amount of starch flowing through the ileo-caecal junction was low and only tended to be higher on day 28 in the W21 group (0.20 v. 0.15 g/day in the W35 group, P = 0.10). The digestive balance pointed out that the digestible energy intake was similar between weaned and suckling rabbits from 23 to 27 days, a phenomenon partly explained by a high ability of the W21 rabbits to digest starch (98%) and NDF (36%). Indeed, the amounts of starch and NDF digested by the W21 group were 2.0- and 2.4-fold higher than those of the W35 rabbits at this period (P < 0.001). However, they ate 20% less digestible proteins than still-suckling rabbits (P < 0.001). From 38 till 42 days, only a lower ability of the W21 rabbits to digest lipids was detected (P < 0.05). In conclusion, early-weaned rabbits were able to adapt quickly to digest large amounts of starch and fibres.

The sustainability of breeding activities in 15 pig farming systems in five European countries was evaluated. One conventional and two differentiated systems per country were studied. The Conventional systems were the standard systems in their countries. The differentiated systems were of three categories: Adapted Conventional with focus on animal welfare, meat quality or environment (five systems); Traditional with local breeds in small-scale production (three systems) and Organic (two systems). Data were collected with a questionnaire from nine breeding organisations providing animals and semen to the studied farming systems and from, on average, five farmers per farming system. The sustainability assessment of breeding activities was performed in four dimensions. The first dimension described whether the market for the product was well defined, and whether the breeding goal reflected the farming system and the farmers’ demands. The second dimension described recording and selection procedures, together with genetic change in traits that were important in the system. The third dimension described genetic variation, both within and between pig breeds. The fourth dimension described the management of the breeding organisation, including communication, transparency, and technical and human resources. The results show substantial differences in the sustainability of breeding activities, both between farming systems within the same category and between different categories of farming systems. The breeding activities are assessed to be more sustainable for conventional systems than for differentiated systems in three of the four dimensions. In most differentiated farming systems, breeding goals are not related to the system, as these systems use the same genetic material as conventional systems. The breeds used in Traditional farming systems are important for genetic biodiversity, but the small scale of these systems renders them vulnerable. It is hoped that, by reflecting on different aspects of sustainability, this study will encourage sustainable developments in pig production.

This study reports the metabolic and morphological characteristics of bovine intermuscular adipose tissue (AT) throughout foetal growth. Our hypothesis was that the histological and molecular features of intermuscular AT would be different from those previously reported for foetal perirenal AT, based on its anatomical location near the muscle and the recent identification of two distinct adipocyte precursors in mouse AT depending on their locations. To address this question, intermuscular AT was sampled from Charolais and Blond d'Aquitaine foetuses at 180, 210 and 260 days post conception (dpc). The two bovine breeds were chosen because of the higher adiposity of Charolais than Blond d'Aquitaine cattle during the postnatal life. Regardless of the breed, adipocyte volume increased slightly (+38%, P < 0.01) with increasing foetal age. This was concomitant with a decrease (P < 0.05) in the activity of enzymes involved in de novo fatty acid (FA) synthesis (FA synthase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) and FA esterification (glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) when expressed per million adipocytes, and with an increase (P ⩽ 0.01) in mRNA abundances for uncoupling protein 1, adiponectin and leptin (LEP) between 180 and 260 dpc. No difference was observed in the adipocyte volume between breeds, which was consistent with the lack of major between-breed differences in mRNA abundances or activities of enzymes involved in lipid metabolism. The mRNA abundance of lipoprotein lipase was maintained across ages, suggesting a storage of circulating FA rather than of FA synthesized de novo. Plasma LEP increased with foetal age, but only in the Charolais breed (+71%, P ⩽ 0.01), and was two- to threefold higher in Charolais than Blond d'Aquitaine foetuses. Regardless of the breed, bovine intermuscular AT contained predominantly unilocular adipocytes believed to be white adipocytes that were larger at 260 dpc than at 180 dpc. These data thus challenge current concepts of the largely brown nature of bovine foetal AT (based on histological and metabolic features of perirenal AT as previously reported a few days before or after birth).

The effect of the forage source on ruminal fermentation in vitro was investigated for fine (F) and coarse (C) milled diets, using a modified Hohenheim gas production test and a semi-continuous rumen simulation technique (Rusitec). It was hypothesised that the replacement of maize silage by grass silage might lead to associative effects and that interactions related to particle size variation could occur. Five diets with a maize silage to grass silage ratio of 100 : 0, 79 : 21, 52 : 48, 24 : 76 and 0 : 100 differed in their content of CP and carbohydrate fractions, as well as digestible crude nutrients, derived from a digestibility trial with wether sheep. For in vitro investigations, the diets were ground to pass a sieve of either 1 mm (F) or 4 mm (C) perforation. Cumulative gas production was recorded during 93 h of incubation and its capacity decreased with increasing proportion of grass silage in the diet. Across all diets, gas production was delayed in C treatments compared with F treatments. Degradation of crude nutrients and detergent fibre fractions was determined in a Rusitec system. Daily amounts of NH3-N and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were measured in the effluent. Degradation of organic matter (OM) and fibre fractions, as well as amounts of NH3-N, increased with stepwise replacement of maize silage by grass silage. Degradability of CP was unaffected by diet composition, as well as total SCFA production. In contrast to the results of the gas production test, degradation of OM and CP was higher in C than in F treatments, accompanied by higher amounts of NH3-N and SCFA. Interactions of silage ratio and particle size were rare. It was concluded that the stepwise replacement of maize silage by grass silage might lead to a linear response of most fermentation characteristics in vitro. This linear effect was also supported by total tract digestibility data. However, further investigations with silages of variable quality seem to be necessary.

The development and moulting of the birth and first adult coat of two genotypes of cashmere-bearing goats, a highyielding Siberian (S) and low-yielding Icelandic × Scottish feral (IF), were examined. Samples of fibre from the neck, mid side, belly and rear-leg areas and of mid-side skin were obtained monthly from five male and five female kids of each genotype from birth to 13 months of age. Guard hair and undercoat length, secondary/primary (S/P) skin follicle ratio and the proportion of skin follicles containing a non-growing fibre with a brush end were recorded. S/P ratio reached an asymptote between 4 and 5 months of age and was higher fP < 0·01) in S (10·7) than in IF (6·7) kids. In both genotypes peaks of brush formation in primary follicles occurred between 2 and 4 months and again between 8 and 11 months of age. In contrast to primary follicles, secondary follicles had only a single peak of brush formation occurring at 10 and 8 months of age for S and IF kids respectively. Guard hair moulted from the birthcoat, but there was no loss of undercoat prior to 12 months of age and harvesting of cashmere prior to this time is unnecessary.

The secondary follicles of S kids had a longer growing period and fibre length increased at a greater rate than that of IF kids, resulting in more than a two-fold difference in the maximum undercoat length. Assessments to estimate the final weight and proportion of cashmere, made prior to completion of growth of the fleece, are likely to underestimate these parameters for high-yielding goats in comparison with their low-yielding counterparts. However, it is unlikely to alter the ranking, and hence the selection, of animals for retention in the breeding herd.

We reasoned that mating animals by minimising the covariance between ancestral contributions (MCAC mating) will generate less inbreeding and at least as much genetic gain as minimum-coancestry mating in breeding schemes where the animals are truncation-selected. We tested this hypothesis by stochastic simulation and compared the mating criteria in hierarchical and factorial breeding schemes, where the animals were selected based on breeding values predicted by animal-model BLUP. Random mating was included as a reference-mating criterion. We found that MCAC mating generated 4% to 8% less inbreeding than minimum-coancestry mating in the hierarchical and factorial breeding schemes without any loss in genetic gain. Moreover, it generated upto 28% less inbreeding and about 3% more genetic gain than random mating. The benefits of MCAC mating over minimum-coancestry mating are worthwhile because they can be achieved without extra costs or practical constraints. MCAC mating merely uses pedigree information to pair the animals more appropriately and is clearly a worthy alternative to minimum-coancestry mating and probably any other mating criterion. We believe, therefore, that MCAC mating should be used in breeding schemes where pedigree information is available.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of glycerol in the diet on milk yield and composition, diet digestibility and some blood metabolites of dairy buffaloes in early lactation. A total of 24 buffaloes were blocked by average milk yield, parity and BW and then randomly assigned to three treatments: control without glycerol (CON); low glycerol (LG): control plus glycerol at 150 ml/day per buffalo; and high glycerol (HG): control plus glycerol at 300 ml/day per buffalo. The experimental period lasted for 60 days. Feeding LG and HG decreased (P<0.0001) dry matter intake compared with the CON. Buffaloes supplemented with LG and HG produced more milk (P<0.01) and had a greater (P<0.0001) yield of fat-corrected milk (3.5%) than those buffaloes fed control treatment. Glycerol-supplemented buffaloes showed a positive energy status indicated by reduced concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate. Feeding LG and HG tended to increase (P⩽0.10) concentrations of milk fat, and serum total protein and globulin and significantly decreased (P⩽0.05) milk urea nitrogen and somatic cells counts (SCCs) compared to the CON group. Inclusion of LG and HG had no effect on organic matter and non-fiber carbohydrate digestion, but improved dry matter (P=0.02), CP (P=0.09), ether extract (P=0.03), NDF (P=0.07) and ADF (P=0.03) digestion.

Finishing late-maturing bulls on grass may alter the antioxidant/prooxidant balance leading to beef with higher susceptibility to lipid oxidation and a lower colour stability compared to bulls finished on cereal concentrates. In this context, lipid oxidation and colour stability of beef from late-maturing bulls finished on pasture, with or without concentrate supplements, or indoors on concentrate was assessed. Charolais or Limousin sired bulls (n = 48) were assigned to four production systems: (1) pasture only (P), (2) pasture plus 25% dietary DM intake as barley-based concentrate (PC25), (3) pasture plus 50% dietary DM intake as barley-based concentrate (PC50) or (4) a barley-based concentrate ration (C). Following slaughter and postmortem ageing, M. Longissimus thoracis et lumborum was subjected to simulated retail display (4°C, 1000 lux for 12 h out of 24 h) for 3, 7, 10 and 14 days in modified atmosphere packs (O2 : CO2; 80 : 20). Lipid oxidation was determined using the 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances assay; α-tocopherol was determined by HPLC; fatty acid methyl esters were determined using Gas Chromatography. Using a randomised complete block design, treatment means were compared by either ANOVA or repeated measures ANOVA using the MIXED procedure of SAS. Total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations were not affected by treatment, n-3 PUFAs were higher (P < 0.001) and the ratio of n-6 to n-3 PUFAs was lower (P < 0.001) in muscle from P, PC25 and PC50 compared to C. α-Tocopherol concentration was higher in muscle from P compared to PC50 and C bulls (P = 0.001) and decreased (P < 0.001) in all samples by day 14. Lipid oxidation was higher in muscle from C compared to P bulls on day 10 and day 14 of storage (P < 0.01). Finishing on pasture without supplementation did not affect beef colour stability and led to lower lipid oxidation, possibly due to the higher α-tocopherol concentration compared to concentrate finished beef.

The aim was to determine whether dietary threonine levels affected hepatic insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) mRNA expression as well as plasma IGF-1 concentration and IGF binding protein (IGFBP) profile in growing pigs. Two male 6-week-old pigs from each of seven litters were used. Each littermate was assigned to one of two diets, control or low threonine (LT), providing per kg 14·3 MJ digestible energy in both diets, 170 g protein in the control diet and 167 g protein in the LT diet. The control diet contained all essential amino acids in the recommended amounts, including 8·2 g threonine per kg. The LT diet was similar but contained only 5·1 g threonine per kg. Pigs were pair-fed these diets for 3 weeks. Growth rate and food efficiency of pigs given the LT diet were significantly lower than those of pigs given the control diet (P 0·001). Plasma IGF-1 concentration of pigs given the LT diet was proportionately 0·44 lower than that of pigs given the control diet (P 0·01). Plasma free threonine concentration of pigs given the LT diet was lower than that of the pigs given the control diet (P 0·001). Plasma IGFBP2 level of pigs given the LT diet was significantly higher than that of pigs given the control diet (P 0·05). Pigs given the LT diet had a significantly lower plasma IGFBP3 level compared with their littermates given the control diet (P 0·05) suggesting that clearance rate of circulating IGF-1 was higher in the LT group. Dietary threonine level did not affect IGF-1 mRNA abundance in the liver. It is concluded that lower plasma IGF-1 level caused by reduced dietary threonine level may have been partly due to increased clearance rate of circulating IGF-1 but not due to IGF-1 gene expression in the liver.

An experiment was conducted to measure the response of goat kids to supplementary feeding of their dams with protected fat (calcium soap of fatty acids). At birth, 22 single male goat kids were distributed in two groups according to the dams’ diet supplemented with 0 (dam control diet, DCD) or 100 (dam protected fat, DPF) g/day of protected fat through lactation. Higher energy intake of dams given protected fat caused higher fat content of their milk (P < 0·01) and the fatty acid profile was affected with a reduction of lauric acid (P < 0.01) and myristic acid (P < 0.01) and an increase in palmitic acid (P < 0.01). Goat kids were suckled by their dams from birth until the end of the experiment and had access to a creep food from 7 days of age. Kids were slaughtered at 45 days of age. There was no significant response (P > 0Ό5) in terms of kid mean live-weight gain, being 172 g (DPF) compared with 148 g (DCD). Fatty acid composition of the perirenal fat showed some differences between groups. Fat composition of group DPF was significantly higher in palmitoleic, oleic and linoleic acid content. In addition, myristic, palmitic and stearic acid had lower values. Fat of goat kids of the DPF group was more unsaturated (43·3 g per 100 g) than fat from animals of the DCD group (32·5 g per 100 g). In the DPF group, oleic acid comprised most of the unsaturated fatty acid due to its important increase compared with fat composition of the DCD group. In conclusion, fatty acid composition of fat depot in goat kids can he modified by feeding of the dams through lactation, which could be useful for possible changes according to market demand.

To determine the endogenous contribution of purine derivatives (PD) to renal excretion and the urinary recovery of duodenal purine bases (PB), five dairy Granadina goats (initial weight ± s.e.: 38.6 ± 2.78 kg) were each fitted with a duodenal infusion catheter. Animals were offered ad libitum a mixed diet (75 : 25; alfalfa hay : concentrate), which was supplied in equal portions every 3 h. To label microbial PB, (15NH4)2SO4 was added to the concentrate. The lower enrichment of urinary PD (15N-allantoin) compared with duodenal PB enrichment confirmed the presence of an endogenous PD fraction (268.5 ± 21.98 μmol/kg weight0.75 or 0.386 of the total PD excretion). The recovery of PD in urine and milk increased linearly in response to increasing amounts of duodenally infused RNA (starting on day 21 after parturition). On average, 0.74 of infused PB from RNA was recovered in urine. Milk PD constituted a minor (<0.01) fraction of the total PD excretion and this fraction decreased as the amount of infused PB increased. Our findings indicate that lactation in goats did not affect the urinary recovery of duodenal PB but increased the endogenous contribution to urinary excretion of PD.

The milk production of three groups of cows grazing on veld and receiving different amounts of concentrates during winter and the first 8 weeks of lactation was studied over four successive calving seasons. Calves were weaned at either 150 or 240 days.

Cows offered most concentrates and those whose calves had been weaned early in the previous year produced more milk per lactation (P < 0·01) than other cows but weaning age did not affect yield/cow per year. Data for each treatment in each year were considered as a separate class. Regression analyses showed that milk yield increased with cow weight at calving and with calf birth weight. Changes in cow weight during early lactation, after adjusting for initial weight, were directly related to milk yield.

In a concurrent experiment, three groups of heifers were confined in pens and given sufficient amounts of a complete diet to promote either gain, maintenance or loss of weight during lactation. Heifers that gained or maintained weight produced significantly (P<0·01) more milk of a higher solids-not-fat and protein content than those which lost weight. Food intake had a significant (P < 0·01) positive effect on milk yield but the effects of weight and weight change on milk yield were negative after adjusting for food consumption.
