1. British Friesian male calves were offered, in two experiments, either chopped, or ground and pelleted dried grass diets to appetite. In one experiment the pelleted diet was also given in restricted quantities. The calves were slaughtered without being fasted, 6 to 9 weeks after weaning, and detailed measurements were made of the weights and volumes of the sections of the alimentary tract and its contents, and of other abdominal organs.

2. Grinding and pelleting the diet reduced mean retention time by approximately 50% and digestibility by 6 to 8 units, and increased dry-matter intake in the two experiments by 55 or 32% respectively, and growth rate by 53 and 69% respectively.

3. The ground and pelleted diets resulted in a smaller quantity of fluid digesta in the rumen, and a much greater quantity in the abomasum and small intestine.

4. There were smaller differences between diets in the quantity of digesta in the combined caecum and colon, or in the total volume of the organs of the abdomen, than in the amount of digesta in the rumen. It is suggested that further critical studies are required upon the importance of the contents of the alimentary tract, or of the abdomen as a whole, in the control of voluntary food intake in ruminants.

Changes in the formulation and flavour of concentrate foods may temporarily reduce their acceptability to cattle, leading to reduced intake when they are offered for a limited time during milking. The rate of intake of 12 dairy cows offered 1 kg of salty or bitter concentrates was compared with a sweet concentrate, with or without an artificial sweetener to mask adverse flavours. The cows were offered the test concentrates twice a day in a Latin-square design with seven feeding occasions per period and the apparent and actual (excluding non-feeding time) food intake rates were recorded for all seven feeding occasions. Both apparent and actual intake rates were slower for the bitter compared with the salty and sweet flavoured concentrate.

For the first two feeding occasions the intake rate was recorded separately for the 1st min and the subsequent period until the end of feeding. The intake rate was faster in the 1st min because of more rapid prehension of the food and fewer interruptions to the feeding process. Where no mask was included there was no effect of flavour on the apparent intake rate in the 1st min of the first feeding occasion but in the 1st min of the second feeding occasion the apparent intake rate of the salty concentrate was less than that for the sweet or bitter concentrates. The actual intake rates of the bitter and salty concentrates were less than for the sweet concentrate. The mask increased the apparent intake rate of the bitter and sweet concentrates in the 1st min of both the first and second feeding occasions, by reducing the non-feeding time and it also increased the actual intake rate of salty concentrates.

After the 1st min the apparent intake rate of the salty concentrate was faster than that of the bitter and sweet concentrates, where no mask was included. The mask increased the apparent intake rate of the sweet concentrates at this time but reduced it for salty and bitter concentrates. It therefore reduced the acclimatization to the salty and bitter concentrates and enhanced the attractiveness of the sweet concentrates.

There was a residual effect from the previous period of concentrates which were eaten slowly i.e. salty concentrates, which reduced the 1st min intake of foods that were eaten rapidly, i.e. sweet concentrates, in the subsequent period. This was largely due to increases in the time spent pausing between bouts of food ingestion. After the 1st min the apparent intake rate of cows receiving salty concentrate for a second consecutive period was increased, suggesting acclimatization. The opposite effect was observed for the sweet concentrate, probably because the novelty of the sweetness had diminished, making it relatively less attractive to the cow. This experiment therefore provides evidence that bitter and to some extent salty concentrates are consumed at a slower rate than sweet concentrates, except for the 1st min in which they are offered to cattle and that a reduced concentrate intake rate may persist after the flavour is removed from the food. Cattle did, however, demonstrate an ability to acclimatize to salty concentrate over time.

Effects of open field testing and associated handling (including blood sampling) v. handling (with blood sampling) alone on adrenocortical reactivity were investigated in piglets around weaning. After weaning at day 28, piglets were mixed to form eight replicates with three litter each and kept on slatted floors. Treatments were open field/novel object testing and associated handling (OFT + H) v. handling alone (H) (no. = 40). Testing took place on the following days (weaning day 0): -4, 0, 1, 4 and 8 (no. = 16). The open field/novel object test lasted 10 min and blood was sampled by venipuncture before and after the test and/or handling procedures. In the first blood sample, plasma concentration of cortisol did not differ between OFT + H and H piglets. In the second blood sample, however, OFT + H piglets had a higher concentration of cortisol and a larger increase in cortisol than H piglets (P < 0·01). In the first blood sample the concentration of cortisol was affected by day (P < 0·05), with concentration on day -4 being lower than those on day 0, 1, and 4 and the concentration on day 8 was lower than the concentration on day 0 as well. However, no differences were found between days for the second blood sample nor the adrenocortical reactivity. In conclusion, the increase in pre-treatment cortisol in the first 4 days after weaning as well as the lack of changes in the adrenocortical reactivity after weaning suggest that the temporal development of HPA activity and reactivity in piglets after weaning are comparable with other, more standardized long-term stressors. Exposure to an open field/novel object test and associated handling results in higher adrenocortical reactivity than handling alone but the latter (including blood sampling) in itself accounts for proportionately 0·74 of the cortisol response.

In an attempt to establish an ad libitum, labour saving feeding system 12 Large White primiparous sows were used to investigate the effects on food intake and digestibility of including oat husks in a conventional concentrate diet. The diet contained 500 g ground oat husks per kg diet and was compared with the undiluted concentrate given in restricted amounts during pregnancy (1·8 kg/day) and lactation (5·4 kg/day). The mean daily food intakes for the oat husk diet were 5·50 and 6·29 kg during pregnancy and lactation respectively. The apparent digestibility of the dry matter of the oat husk diet (0·58) was significantly lower than that of the concentrate (0·80), but values for apparent digestibility of nitrogen were similar (0·77 and 0·78, respectively).

The study aimed to examine effects of supplemented CLA to periparturient dairy cows receiving different concentrate proportions antepartum (a.p.) to investigate CLA effects on metabolism and immune function. Compared with adapted feeding, high-concentrate diet a.p. should induce a ketogenic metabolic situation postpartum (p.p.) to better understand how CLA works. A total of 64 pregnant German Holstein cows had ad libitum access to partial mixed rations based on concentrate and roughage 3 weeks before calving until day 60 p.p. A.p., cows received 100 g/day control fat (CON) or a CLA supplement, either in a low-concentrate (20%, CON-20, CLA-20) or high-concentrate diet (60%, CON-60, CLA-60). P.p., concentrate proportion was adjusted to 50% while fat supplementation continued. After day 32 p.p., half of the animals of CLA-groups changed to CON supplementation (CLA-20-CON, CLA-60-CON). A ketogenic metabolic state p.p. was not achieved and respective impacts of CLA could not be examined. Blood samples for isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were collected on day −21, 7, 28 and 56 relative to calving. Blood chemistry samples were taken over the entire experimental period. Mitogen-stimulated proliferation of PBMC remained unaffected. Besides serum concentrations of triglycerides, total bilirubin, total protein, albumin and IGF-1, clinical-chemical serum characteristics remained uninfluenced by treatments. No post-supplementation effect could be observed. Measured blood metabolites and mitogen-stimulated proliferation of PBMC indicate that all groups had an increased metabolic stress around calving, whereby group CLA-20 was affected more severely. Overall, supplemented CLA did not positively affect metabolism or immune function of periparturient dairy cows. However, feeding CLA in a low-concentrate diet a.p. seems to increase liver stress around calving via reduced DMI.

Mean daily milk yield, fat concentration and protein concentration in the milk of 579 303 British Friesian, 6 608 Shorthorn, 27 374 Ayrshire, 19 529 Jersey and 19 760 Guernsey cattle were recorded monthly from August 1978 to July 1979 inclusive, and classified by breed, parity, stage of lactation, and five geographical areas according to the location of the herd. Parameters of the function Y(n) = anbecn were estimated for each breed/parity/area group for yield, fat concentration and protein concentration (b and c describe the shape of the curve, a is a scalar, n the week of lactation and e the base of natural logarithms). Systematic deviations from the function were associated with the season of production, reflecting the spring and summer flush of milk yield. Fat and protein concentrations also exhibited seasonal variations from the underlying curve. After correction for the seasonal fluctuation in production, there was no variation in total yield, fat concentration or protein concentration associated with the month of calving.

Excessive abdominal fat might be associated with more severe metabolic disorders in Holstein cows. Our hypothesis was that there are genetic differences between cows with low and high abdominal fat deposition and a normal cover of subcutaneous adipose tissue. The objective of this study was to assess the genetic basis for variation in visceral adiposity in US Holstein cows. The study included adult Holstein cows sampled from a slaughterhouse (Green Bay, WI, USA) during September 2016. Only animals with a body condition score between 2.75 and 3.25 were considered. The extent of omental fat at the level of the insertion of the lesser omentum over the pylorus area was assessed. A group of 100 Holstein cows with an omental fold <5 mm in thickness and minimum fat deposition throughout the entire omentum, and the second group of 100 cows with an omental fold ⩾20 mm in thickness and with a marked fat deposition observed throughout the entire omentum were sampled. A small piece of muscle from the neck was collected from each cow into a sterile container for DNA extraction. Samples were submitted to a commercial laboratory for interrogation of genome-wide genomic variation using the Illumina BovineHD Beadchip. Genome-Wide association analysis was performed to test potential associations between fat deposition and genomic variation. A univariate mixed linear model analysis was performed using genome-wide efficient mixed model association to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with variation in a visceral fat deposition. The chip heritability was 0.686 and the estimated additive genetic and residual variance components were 0.427 and 0.074, respectively. In total, 11 SNPs defining four quantitative trait locus (QTL) regions were found to be significantly associated with visceral fat deposition (P<0.00001). Among them, two of the QTL were detected with four and five significantly associated SNPs, respectively; whereas, the QTLs detected on BTA12 and BTA19 were each detected with only one significantly associated SNP. No enriched gene ontology terms were found within the gene networks harboring these genes when supplied to DAVID using either the Bos taurus or human gene ontology databases. We conclude that excessive omental fat in Holstein cows with similar body condition scores is not caused by a single Mendelian locus and that the trait appears to be at least moderately heritable; consequently, selection to reduce excessive omental fat is potentially possible, but would require the generation of predicted transmitting abilities from larger and random samples of Holstein cattle.

This paper describes an investigation of the use of computer tomography (CT) to genetically improve carcass composition and conformation in Scottish Blackface sheep. After 5 years of selection on an index designed to improve both composition and conformation (the ‘CT index’), a large response was observed in the CT index, with genetic progress equivalent to 0.11 phenotypic standard deviations per year. Heritabilities for the index and for the component traits of average CT-assessed muscle area, ultrasonic muscle depth and ultrasonic fat depth were 0.41 (s.e. 0.08), 0.38 (s.e. 0.07), 0.41 (s.e. 0.05) and 0.30 (s.e. 0.05), respectively. The index was positively genetically correlated with ultrasonic muscle depth and carcass weight and negatively genetically correlated with fat class. The genetic and phenotypic correlations among ultrasonic measurements were positive and moderate. However, many of the genetic correlations tended to have large standard errors. Selection on the CT index moderately improved conformation and was successful at decreasing fat class of the carcass. Equivalent selection on live weight at ultrasound scanning would improve carcass and slaughter weight, and total price received, but would have a slightly deleterious impact on conformation score. The results of this study demonstrate that genetic improvement of carcass quality can be achieved in hill sheep using CT assessed traits.

Stereotypies are used as indicators of poor animal welfare and it is, therefore, important to understand underlying factors mediating their development. In calves, two oral stereotypies, that is, tongue playing and object manipulation, result mostly from insufficient structure in the diet. Three hypotheses were studied: (1) oral stereotypies in calves are one of two alternative strategies, the alternative being hypo-activity; (2) stereotyping and non-stereotyping calves differ in terms of cortisol secretion; (3) oral stereotypy development in calves rests on a gene by environment interaction. Eight-week-old bull calves (n=48) were assigned to one of four solid feed allowances (0, 9, 18 or 27 g dry matter/kg metabolic weight per day) with the following composition: 50% concentrate, 25% maize silage and 25% straw on dry matter basis. The calves received milk replacer in buckets, the provision of which was adjusted to achieve equal growth rates. At 14 to 18 weeks of age, calves were exposed to a challenge, that is, tethering inside cages. Oral stereotypies and inactivity were recorded in the home pens in the 4 weeks before the challenge using instantaneous scan sampling. Salivary cortisol levels were measured at −120, +40, +80, +120 min and +48 h relative to the challenge. Individual differences in behaviour were recorded in the first 30 min after challenge implementation using focal animal sampling and continuous recording, and these elements were entered into a principal component (PC) analysis to extract PCs. Regression analyses were performed to find relationships between stereotypies and inactivity, stereotypies and cortisol, and stereotypies and PCs (individual differences, genes) and solid feed (environment). Relationships between PCs and cortisol were also investigated to help with the interpretation of PCs. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were rejected. Hypothesis 3, however, was supported: calves with a zero solid feed allowance, that is, in the most barren environment, showed links between stereotypies and two of the PCs. Calves that displayed high levels of idle and rapid locomotion and low levels of oral contact with the cage during the challenge also displayed high levels of object manipulation in the home pens. Calves that displayed low levels of stepping and turning attempts during the challenge also displayed high levels of tongue playing in the home pens. This study corroborates the gene by environment interaction on the development of oral stereotypies in calves.

The effects of exercise on food intake, growth rate and behaviour were investigated in two trials with 32 pigs. The exercise took the form of running or walking four times the length of a concrete path twice a day. Food intake and rate of gain in body weight were decreased by exercise; the thickness of back fat was not significantly affected. Exercise increased the amount of time spent resting. It is concluded that exercise does not appear to be a practical method of producing leaner carcasses.

Four experiments were carried out on individually penned Finn Dorset and Suffolk × Finn Dorset ewes receiving complete diets of milled hay and concentrates and rationed at various levels below voluntary intake. In the first experiment, 20 non-pregnant non-lactating ewes were each given daily 1·6 kg food and injected intramuscularly with either isotonic saline (control), progesterone plus oestrogen (20 mg + 80 ng per 24 h) to mimic hormone status in pregnancy, bromocriptine (1 mg per 12 h) to suppress plasma prolactin, or thyrotrophin releasing factor (TRF) to elevate plasma concentrations of prolactin and the iodothyronines. Fractional outflow rates of chromium-mordanted fish meal from the rumen were estimated from the rate of excretion of chromium in faeces and were proportionately 0·25 higher for ewes given TRF than for controls (P < 0·025). None of the other treatments had a significant effect on outflow rate.

In experiment 2, fractional outflow rates from the rumen were determined during July (long daylength) and again during December (short daylength) in 12 ewes that had their seasonal pattern of plasma prolactin modified by removal of their anterior cervical sympathetic ganglia. Another 12 sham-operated ewes were used as controls. Neither the seasonal changes in prolactin nor their modification by cervical ganglionectomy significantly affected outflow rate.

Twelve non-pregnant non-lactating ewes were used in the third experiment to test the effects of mid-winter shearing (mean ambient temperature −4°C) on fractional outflow rates from the rumen and on the plasma concentrations of prolactin, thyroxine (T4) and cortisol. Shearing caused a drop in plasma prolactin, gave proportional increases (P < 0·05) of 0·47 and 0·16 in T4 and cortisol respectively and gave a 0·12 increase (P < 0·01) in the outflow rate of chromium-mordanted fish meal from the rumen. The increases in T4, and outflow rate were sustained for at least 2 weeks.

For experiment 4, 22 ewes each suckling two lambs were used in three trials to see if variation between ewes in milk production and in lamb growth rate was correlated with variation in outflow rate from the rumen. The only significant correlation (r = 0·68, P < 0·01) was between outflow rate and lamb growth rate for the eight ewes in trial 1. The results of all four experiments are discussed in relation to the mechanisms by which non-dietary factors, via their effect on the rate of outflow of digesta from the rumen, may alter the quantity of protein reaching the abomasum and the likely significance of this alteration on animal performance.

Breeding schemes for ivool sheep based on natural service (N), MOET (multiple ovulation and embryo transfer) in adults (A) and MOET in juveniles (J) are compared using Monte Carlo simulation allowing overlapping generations and selection across age groups. In all schemes parents can be a maximum of 6 years old when their offspring are born, and can be a minimum of 2 years in N or A schemes or 1 year in f schemes. Embryo transfer success rates follow realistic distributions (only 70% of flushes resulting in live lambs) with a mean of 2·13 or 345 6-month-old lambs per donor per flush for current or ‘future’ situations. Under natural mating an average of 1·09 6-month-old lambs per ewe mated is assumed. The trait under selection has a heritability of 0·4 and is measurable on both sexes by 18 months of age, which is before selection in N and A schemes but after the initial opportunity for selection in f schemes where selection is based on a pedigree index. Two culling policies for males are considered in J schemes: all sires culled if not selected (J), or all sires available for selection after their record is collected even if they were not selected on their pedigree index in the previous year (f o ). Comparison of schemes is made on the basis of response depressed by the effect of inbreeding and cumulated and discounted over a medium time horizon. For a given population size (constant expected number of lambs per year and therefore numbers of dams dependent on fertility rates) different numbers of sires were utilized. The optimum number of sires was determined as the number which maximized the response criterion. N, A, J and J° schemes have different optimum numbers of sires (5, 8,30 and 20 respectively) which occur at different rates of inbreeding and which are approximately independent of population size. Advantages in the response criterion of A, J and J° over N schemes are 23%, 33% and 47% respectively for ‘future’ embryo transfer success rates and mass selection. Increasing the number of lambs born per donor ewe from 2·13 to 13·8 (by increasing embryos per flush and number of flushes) increases the response criterion by up to 25% in A and up to 11% in J schemes (assuming donor ewes are mated to a different sire for each flush) with 345 lambs born per year. Use of best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) estimated breeding values increases response by 8%, 3% and 3% in N, A and J schemes respectively. The advantages off over A and N schemes, of increased lambs per donor and of BLUP over mass selection all increase as population size increases. Insemination of the poorer ewes with semen which gave only female offspring gave 5% increase in the N scheme and no benefit in A or f schemes.

The design and evaluation of breeding programmes for live-weight-for-age (LFA) in dairy cattle requires estimates of the heritability and the additive genetic and residual components of variance for this trait, and also of its genetic correlation with milk production. A number of estimates of these parameters are available (summarised recently by Langelet, 1963; Mason, 1964; and Nichols and White, 1964). They are, however, generally based on rather limited data, on data from cows rather than bull-calves, or on data from dual purpose cattle. In this note estimates of the variance components and heritability for LFA in dairy cattle bull calves, and of the genetic correlation between bull calf LFA and milk production will be presented.

The loss of phosphates from dairy farms contributes to the eutrophication of waterways. Whilst reducing the phosphorus (P) content of dairy cow diets has the potential to help reduce phosphate losses, diets containing inadequate dietary P may have a negative effect on cow health and performance. To address this issue, 100 winter-calving Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were offered diets containing either ‘high’ or ‘low’ levels of dietary P. The experiment was conducted over a 4-year period, with 80 primiparous cows commencing the study in year 1, while a further 20 primiparous cows commenced the study in year 2. Rations offered during the winter comprised grass silage, maize silage (70 : 30 dry matter (DM) basis, approximately) and concentrates (10.0 to 12.0 kg/cow per day). During the summer periods in years 1 and 2, half of the cows grazed both day and night, while the remaining cows grazed by day, and were housed by night and offered grass silage. During years 3 and 4, all cows grazed both day and night during the summer period. Concentrate feed levels during the summer periods were 3.0 to 4.0 kg/cow per day. Different dietary P levels were achieved by offering concentrates containing either high or low P levels during the winter period (approximately 7.0 or 4.4 g P/kg DM respectively), and during the summer period (approximately 6.8 or 3.6 g P/kg DM, respectively). Total ration P levels averaged 4.9 and 3.6 g P/kg DM for the ‘high’ and ‘low’ P winter diets respectively, and 4.2 and 3.6 g P/kg DM for the ‘high’ and ‘low’ P summer diets respectively. A total of 95, 70, 50 and 22 cows completed each of lactations 1 to 4 respectively. Dietary P level had no significant effect on food intake, milk output or milk composition (P > 0.05). Plasma P concentrations were significantly lower with cows offered the ‘low’ P diet in each of lactations 1 to 4 (P < 0.05). In each of lactations 3 and 4, cows offered the ‘low’ P diet tended to have lower condition scores and live weights than those offered the ‘high’ P diet. The results of this experiment highlight that the P content of dairy cow diets can be substantially reduced with no detrimental effect on dairy cow performance.

The impact of sequential feeding of whole or ground wheat on the performance of layer hen was investigated using ISABROWN hens from 19 to 42 weeks of age. In addition, the effect of reduced dietary energy content of a complete diet was also investigated. Four treatments were tested. Whole wheat was alternated with a protein–mineral concentrate (balancer diet) in a treatment (sequential whole wheat: SWW), while another treatment alternated ground wheat (sequential ground wheat: SGW) with the same balancer diet. The control (C) was fed a complete layer diet conventionally. Another treatment (low energy: LE) was fed a complete diet conventionally. The diet contained lower energy (10.7 v. 11.6 MJ/kg) compared to the C. Each treatment was allocated 16 cages and each cage contained five birds. Light was provided 16 h daily (0400 to 2000 h). Feed offered was controlled (121 g/bird per day) and distributed twice (2 × 60.5 g) at 4 and 11 h after lights on. In the sequential treatment, only wheat (whole or ground) was fed during the first distribution and the balancer diet during the second distribution. Left over feed was always removed before the next distribution. The total feed intake was not different between SWW and SGW, but the two were lower than C (P < 0.05). Wheat intake was however, lowered with SGW compared to SWW (P < 0.05). Egg production and egg mass (EM) were not different between treatments. Egg weight was lower with SGW than with SWW (P < 0.05), but the two were similar to C. Body weight (BW) was lowered (P < 0.01) with SGW relative to SWW and C, SWW BW being also lower than the C one. The efficiency of egg production was increased (P < 0.01) with the SWW and SGW relative to the control. Birds fed LE had higher feed intake (P < 0.05) but they had similar egg production and EM compared to the two sequential treatments. The efficiency of feed utilization was also reduced (P < 0.01) with LE compared to SWW and SGW. It was concluded that sequential feeding is more efficient than conventional feeding. In addition, whole wheat appeared more efficient than ground wheat in terms of egg and BW.

Animals living in temperate climates are continually adapting to seasonal demands of reproduction and survival. Whilst it is well documented that ruminants show seasonal changes in both reproductive and non-reproductive physiological and behavioural characteristics (reduction of metabolic rate and appetite during the winter with respective increases during spring and summer), this information has not been fully established in the non-ruminating ungulate species of Equidae. This may be important information from a practical management perspective since groups of equids are increasingly being kept in natural conditions for the purposes of conservation grazing.

The aim of this study, therefore, was to document the behavioural and physiological adaptive changes made by ponies during a 12-month period and to relate these to changes in forage availability and environment. Five mature pony stallions were kept in west Wales (4°5′W, 52°25′N) and monitored for 12 months. A range of physiological (testis size, body weight, condition score (CS), hoof growth, moult (M), pelage fibre length, depth and density) and behavioural measurements (foraging and non-foraging activities) were recorded along with monthly forage analysis (crude protein (CP), water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC)), dry matter (DM)) and environmental conditions (day length and minimum ambient temperature). All physiological measurements were significantly (P<0·001 to P<0·05, r2=0·16 to 0·69) related to day length and all except testis size, body weight and M were significantly related to minimum temperature, CS (P<0·001; r2=0·583), hoof growth (P<0·001; r2=0·457), pelage fibre length (P<0·001; r2=0·61), pelage fibre depth (P<0·001; r2=0·489) and pelage density (P<0·05; r2=0·192). Fewer significant relationships were observed in relation to forage characteristics; significances only obtained between CP and CS (P<0·001; r2=0·854), fibre length (P<0·01; r2=0·625) and pelage fibre depth (P<0·01; r2=0·624); between DM and CS (P<0·05; r2=0·352) and pelage fibre depth (P<0·05; r2=0·343); between WSC and pelage fibre depth (P<0·01; r2=0·55) and pelage fibre depth (P<0·05; r2=0·34). Behaviour results showed a significant relationship between time spent alert and day-length (P<0·05; r2=0·35) and between minimum ambient temperature and time spent eating (P<0·05; r2=0·37), locomotory behaviour (P<0·01; r2=0·53) and passive interaction (P=0·001; r2=0·63). A significant relationship was also reported between eating and CP (P<0·01; r2=0·53) as well as DM (P=0·01; r2=0·43). The ponies in this study demonstrated a series of adaptive changes during winter concomitant with energy conservation, however, forage availability and intake also decreased indicating lower energy input. Despite energy conserving adaptations it is unlikely that nutrient intake was adequate to account for the limited winter decline in CS and weight. In conclusion, it was considered that: (a) ponies demonstrated physiological and behavioural adaptation in response to environmental demands, (b) during winter ponies demonstrated behaviours indicative of a cost benefit analysis of expending energy in the pursuit of poor quality forage, (c) despite energy conserving adaptations, intake is unlikely to have been adequate to maintain the CS observed, and (d) reduction in metabolic rate and increased food conversion efficiency may be additional adaptations made during times of environmental challenge.

To examine the effects of body condition and previous nutrition on the herbage intake of ewes grazing swards of different heights in autumn, 96 Scottish Blackface X Border Leicester ewes with a wide range of body condition (score 1·75 to 3·50), were initially housed and given 50 g dry matter (DM) per kg metabolic live weight (M)0·75 per day (treatment L) or 95 g DM per kg M0·75 per day (treatment H) of a pelleted dried grass diet (11·6 MJ metabolizable energy per kg DM) for 6 weeks after weaning in July. The H ewes gained more live weight (9·0 v. 2·7 kg) and body condition score (0·39 v. 0·17) than the L ewes. Half the animals from each treatment were then allocated to each of two ryegrass pastures with a sward height of 5 cm (LS) or 10 cm (HS) for a further 6-week grazing period. During the grazing period there was no significant effect of indoor feeding level on herbage intake, but the L ewes gained more live weight (6·4 v. 5·0 kg) than the H ewes. On the HS, compared with the LS sward, mean herbage intakes were higher (70·0 v. 60·5 g DM per kg M0·75) as were gains in live weight and condition score (7·9 v. 3·4 kg; 0·18 v. 0·0). There were no interactions between the effects of sward height and previous feeding level on herbage intake. Ewes in low body condition (< 2·5) at the start of the grazing period ingested the same amount of herbage on both swards (70·3 g DM per kg M0·75) whereas ewes in high body condition (> 2·5) ingested more (67·0 v. 51·6 g DM per kg M0·75) on the HS compared with the LS sward. The responses of ewes in low and high body condition to different sward heights are discussed in relation to appetite drive and aspects of grazing behaviour.

Abstract The effects of two temperatures (thermoneutral, 22°C v. fluctuating high temperature, 35·22°C), four food levels (ad libitum and three levels of food restriction) on growth and energy retention of growing pigs (male and female) was investigated in a 2 × 2 × 4 factorial experiment involving 48 individually penned pigs from 20 to 50 kg live weight. A second experiment was conducted over the 50 to 80 kg liveweight range using a 2 × 2 × 3 design.

Mean daily digestible energy (DE) intake, daily gain, P2 backfat thickness, carcass fat proportion, total body energy retained and body energy retained as protein did not differ significantly between the temperature treatments in either experiment. Mean carcass protein proportion was greater at 35·22°C than at a constant 22°C.

With pigs given food ad libitum during the 50 to 80 kg phase, an increase in temperature from 22°C to 35·22° reduced daily DE intake by 4·1 MJ (38·9 v. 34·8 MJ or 300 g food per day), reduced energy retention by 2·3 MJ/day (15·6 v. 13·3 MJ/day), and increased carcass protein proportion by 11 g/kg (142 v. 153 g/kg).

There was a significant interaction between the effects of sex and temperature on P2 backfat thickness over both live-weight ranges. Female pigs housed at 35·22°C had 2·6 mm less P2 backfat at 50 kg (13 v. 15·6 mm) and 2 mm less at 80 kg (20 v. 22 mm) compared with females housed at 22°C. The P2 backfat thickness of male pigs did not vary at 50 kg (13·2 v. 13·5 mm) but when housed at 35·22°C males had 1·4 mm more P2 backfat at 80 kg (18·2 v. 19·6 mm).

Twelve sows (F) were fed 7·3 kg/day and twelve (T) 3·7 kg/day of a 16% crude protein (CP) diet for the last 5 weeks of an 8-week lactation, so that at the subsequent service F sows were heavier (16%) and in better condition.

From service to slaughter 70 days later, sows received either 3·7 kg/day (H) or 1·8 kg/day (L) of a 15% CP diet, giving four treatment combinations; FH, FL, TH and TL.

In pregnancy H sows gained more weight than L sows and, on the low plane, F sows gained more weight than T sows. Ovulation rate as measured by corpora lutea count at slaughter was higher for TH than TL sows and for FL sows than FH sows. A combination of low ovulation rate and high mortality rate gave fewer foetuses (10·0) in the TL sows than in sows on the other treatments (13·5). Similarly mean foetal weight and thus foetal litter weight was least in TL sows. Foetal membranes, uterine fluids and uterine wall were lighter at slaughter in T sows than F sows and lighter in L sows than H sows, those of TL sows being appreciably the lightest.

The results indicate that when the sow is in poor condition at service, body reserves being depleted, the uterus and its contents become more vulnerable to adverse pregnancy nutrition.

A total of 166 crossbred does were used to study the possible long term effect of two types of crossbred does (H1 v. H2, old and current generations, respectively) from the cross of different generations of lines selected for litter size, the use of a feeding programme based on a low-energy diet during the rearing and the administration of a high-energy diet during reproductive life, on the performance and body condition of multiparous pregnant does. Selection did not affect the live weight (LW) of does at the effective artificial insemination (AI; 4257 g), the LW change (+12·3 g/day) and food intake (172 g dry matter (DM) per day) until the 28th day of pregnancy. However, H2 does showed greater LW losses during the pre-partum period than H1 does (120+g; P<0·05), perhaps related to their higher prolificacy (+1·1 total pups born; P<0·05). H2 does showed a higher perirenal fat thickness (PFT) at first AI (+0·12 mm; P<0·05) than H1 does, these differences disappearing at effective AI. Females given a high-energy reproduction diet showed a lower LW at effective AI than those receiving a medium-energy diet (4210, 4305 g, respectively; P<0·05). However, type of reproduction diet did not affect the LW and PFT changes of pregnancy does, reaching partum with a similar PFT (8·83 v. 8·93 mm) and maintaining the differences in LW. Pregnant does given high-energy diet consumed 20 g DM and 1·4 g digestible protein per day less than does receiving medium-energy diet until the 28th day of pregnancy, but their digestible energy (DE) intake was significantly higher (+78 kJ DE per day; P<0·05). Does given high-energy diet showed a significantly lower litter size at birth (−0·7 pups; P<0·05), although there were no significant differences in the number of pups born alive (9·54 and 9·76 pups for high and medium-energy diets, respectively). Pups from does given high-energy diet were slightly weightier than those from medium-energy diet (+5·4 g; P<0·05). Multiparous pregnant does that received a low-energy diet ad libitum during the rearing period and first pregnancy showed a higher LW at effective AI (+137 g LW; P<0·05) but a lower PFT (−0·26 mm; P<0·05) than those females that received a medium-energy diet restricted during this same period. These differences were maintained at parturition (+142 g LW and −0·20 mm; P<0·05). Feeding programme during rearing affected neither the food intake of multiparous pregnant does until the 28th day of pregnancy, nor the litter size and weight at birth. The interval between parturitions was not affected by the selection for litter size or the reproduction diet received, but was longer for does that received the low-energy diet ad libitum during the rearing period (+2·9 days; P<0·05). In conclusion, rabbit selection programmes by litter size seem to be working well, but high energy reproduction diets, frequently used to cover their higher energy requirements, must be used carefully out of lactation in the long term to avoid a reduction in litter size.
