1. A total of sixty, 7-day-old British Friesian male calves, reared on a conventional early-weaning system, were used in two experiments in which dried skim milk was partially replaced by levels of 7, 14 and 21 % cooked potato flour (CPF). In the first experiment the diets were iso-energetic but differed in total nitrogen contents, whilst in the second experiment, casein was used to make the diets iso-nitrogenous.

2. In both experiments, diets containing CPF depressed growth rate from 4 to 18 days on treatment (11 to 25 days of age) and reduced the firmness of the faeces. These effects were correlated with the concentrations of CPF in the diets, live-weight gain being depressed by 20%, and the firmness of the faeces by 14%, for each 10 % inclusion of CPF. After 18 days on treatment (25 days of age) these effects became less pronounced.

3. The overall performance of calves to weaning (after 35 days on treatment) was similar on all diets. Daily live-weight gains from 4 to 56 days and 35 to 56 days did not differ between treatments. 4. It was concluded that whilst the inclusion of CPF in the diets of milk-fed calves was unlikely to have any permanent effect on the live weight of calves at 5 or 8 weeks of age its use in milk diets for calves of less than 3 weeks of age must be limited if loose faeces are to be avoided.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of silage characteristics on water intake of lactating dairy cows and to examine the prediction of water intake. Sixteen grass silages, differing in fermentation and intake characteristics, were offered ad libitum to dairy cows in early lactation supplemented with 7 kg/day of concentrate (13·3 MJ metabolizable energy per kg dry matter (DM) and 216 g crude protein per kg DM). Four silages were offered in each of four incomplete change-over design experiments, consisting of three 3-week periods. Water intakes were recorded through individual Kent water meters and press water bowls over the final week of each period. Tree (drinking) water intake ranged from 20·1 to 89·9 (mean = 45·2; s.d. = 12·96) I/day whilst total water intake (also including food water) ranged from 48·4 to 123·8 (mean = 87·3; s.d. = 14·12) I/day. Water intake increased with increasing silage DM concentration, however free water replaced silage water at a rate less than 1. Milk yield and silage D value (digestible organic matter, g/kg DM) were strongly positively correlated with free water intake (r = 0·751 and 0·595 respectively), though fermentation indices were not good single predictors of water intake. Further analysis revealed problems owing to collinearity within the predictors of water intake: DM intake, silage D value and milk yields being significantly correlated, as were pH and volatile fatty acids as a proportion of total fermentation acids. The ridge regression technique was used to reduce collinearity problems and produce stable equations. The best prediction equations for water intake involved a combination of both animal and analytical information: diet DM concentration, milk yield and silage pH. The use of fermentation information, whether from titration or high-performance liquid chromatography did not describe real variation in water intake beyond that described by silage pH. Free water intake was higher with higher diet DM concentrations, higher milk yields and higher silage pH.

Meat quality and (anti)oxidative metabolism of m. pectoralis superficialis (MPS), m. gastrocnemius (MG) and m. iliotibilialis lateralis (MIL) from turkey toms were analysed. After slaughter, pH of MPS and MG decreased and electrical conductivity of the MPS increased. The MG had generally higher pH values. The meat lightness (L*) and redness (a*) increased in MG and MPS after slaughter. The MPS always had higher L* and lower a* values. Mitochondrial respiratory activities (MRA) were higher in the MIL than the MPS. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase, analysed in the MPS, increased and the glutathione reductase activity decreased after slaughter. Meat samples with lower pH24 h p.m. had higher drip loss and L* values. The MRA were tendentially lower and the SOD activities higher in these samples. These results indicate a relation between the meat quality, the antioxidative metabolism and mitochondrial respiration.

The disappearance of neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) from six fibrous foods (lucerne hay, NaOH-treated barley straw, olive leaves, paprika meal, soya-bean hulls and sunflower hulls) when incubated in the rumen of sheep in nylon bags was investigated. Source of fibre, time of incubation and its interaction had a significant (P < 0·01) effect on NDF degradation. Stepwise regression analysis showed that the best single predictor for NDF degradation rate was the hemicellulose fraction of NDF (HEMndf). The variables selected to predict potential degradability and degradability of NDF at 72 h were the proportions of acid-detergent lignin in NDF (ADLndf, first step) and of acid-detergent cutin in ADL (ADCadl, second step). For NDF degradability at 12 h, the variables selected were the proportions of HEMndf, ADLndf and ADCadl, in the first, second and third step, respectively. The results showed that ADC is an important component to understand NDF degradability at both 12 and 72 h.

The effect of different weaning ages, that is, 21 (G21), 28 (G28) or 35 (G35) days, on growth and certain parameters of the digestive tract was examined in rabbits to assess the risk of early weaning attributable to the less-developed digestive system. On days 35 and 42, G35 rabbits had 10% to 14% and 10% higher BW, respectively (P < 0.05), than those weaned at days 21 and 28. In the 4th week of life, early weaned animals had 75% higher feed intake than G28 and G35 rabbits (P < 0.05). The relative weight of the liver increased by 62% between 21 and 28 days of age, and thereafter it decreased by 76% between 35 and 42 days of age (P < 0.05), with G21 rabbits having 29% higher weight compared with G35 animals on day 35 (P < 0.05). The relative weight of the whole gastrointestinal (GI) tract increased by 49% and 22% after weaning in G21 and G28 rabbits, respectively (P < 0.05). On day 28, the relative weight of the GI tract was 19% higher in G21 than in G28 rabbits, whereas on day 35 G21 and G28 animals had a 12% heavier GI tract compared with G35 rabbits (P < 0.05). Age influenced the ratio of stomach, small intestine and caecum within the GI tract; however, no effect of different weaning age was demonstrated. The pH value of the stomach and caecum decreased from 5.7 to 1.6 and from 7.1 to 6.3, respectively, whereas that of the small intestine increased from 6.8 to 8.4 (P < 0.05); the differences between groups were not statistically significant. Strictly anaerobic culturable bacteria were present in the caecum in high amounts (108), already at 14 days of age; no significant difference attributable to weaning age was demonstrable. The concentration of total volatile fatty acids (tVFA) was higher in G21 than in G28 and G35 throughout the experimental period (P < 0.05). The proportion of acetic and butyric acid within tVFA increased, whereas that of propionic acid decreased, resulting in a C3 : C4 ratio decreasing with age. Early weaning (G21) resulted in higher butyric acid and lower propionic acid proportions on day 28 (P < 0.05). No interaction between age and treatment was found, except in relative weight of the GI tract and caecal content. In conclusion, early weaning did not cause considerable changes in the digestive physiological parameters measured, but it resulted in 10% lower growth in rabbits.

Knowledge of population structure and breed composition of a population can be advantageous for a number of reasons; these include designing optimal (cross)breeding strategies in order to maximise non-additive genetic effects, maintaining flockbook integrity by authenticating animals being registered and as a quality control measure in the genotyping process. The objectives of the present study were to 1) describe the population structure of 24 sheep breeds, 2) quantify the breed composition of both flockbook-recorded and crossbred animals using single nucleotide polymorphism BLUP (SNP-BLUP), and 3) quantify the accuracy of breed composition prediction from low-density genotype panels containing between 2000 and 6000 SNPs. In total, 9334 autosomal SNPs on 11 144 flockbook-recorded animals and 1172 crossbred animals were used. The population structure of all breeds was characterised by principal component analysis (PCA) as well as the pairwise breed fixation index (Fst). The total number of animals, all of which were purebred, included in the calibration population for SNP-BLUP was 2579 with the number of animals per breed ranging from 9 to 500. The remaining 9559 flockbook-recorded animals, composite breeds and crossbred animals represented the test population; three breeds were excluded from breed composition prediction. The breed composition predicted using SNP-BLUP with 9334 SNPs was considered the gold standard prediction. The pairwise breed Fst ranged from 0.040 (between the Irish Blackface and Scottish Blackface) to 0.282 (between the Border Leicester and Suffolk). Principal component analysis revealed that the Suffolk from Ireland and the Suffolk from New Zealand formed distinct, non-overlapping clusters. In contrast, the Texel from Ireland and that from New Zealand formed integrated, overlapping clusters. Composite animals such as the Belclare clustered close to its founder breeds (i.e., Finn, Galway, Lleyn and Texel). When all 9334 SNPs were used to predict breed composition, an animal that had a majority breed proportion predicted to be ≥0.90 was defined as purebred for the present study. As the panel density decreased, the predicted breed proportion threshold, used to identify animals as purebred, also decreased (≥0.85 with 6000 SNPs to ≥0.60 with 2000 SNPs). In all, results from the study suggest that breed composition for purebred and crossbred animals can be determined with SNP-BLUP using ≥5000 SNPs.

A total of eight Simmental heifers (114 ± 3.2 days old and weighing 118 ± 3.8 kg BW) were used to study the effects of feeding method on intake and animal behaviour in a crossover design experiment. Treatments consisted of feeding concentrate and chopped barley straw as (1) choice (CH; concentrate and straw in separate feedbunks) or (2) total mixed ration (TMR; concentrate and straw in one feedbunk). Feeds were offered on an ad libitum basis, but always maintaining a concentrate to straw ratio of 90 to 10. The experiment was performed in two 21-day periods, and sampling was carried out in the last week of each period. At the end of each period, treatment was changed for heifers; hence, the final number of animals per treatment was eight. Intake was recorded over 7 consecutive days. BW was recorded at the beginning and the end of the experiment and on day 21 of each experimental period. Barley straw was coarsely chopped with a chopping machine. Once chopped, all the straw was handled for particle size separation using the 2-screen Penn State Particle Separator and only material of more than 8 mm was used to feed the heifers. Animal behaviour was video-recorded for 24 h on day 2 and day 6 of each experimental period. Concentrate intake and total dry matter intake of heifers fed with the CH feeding method were higher (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05) than when fed with TMR (5.1 and 5.3 v. 4.7 and 5.0 kg dry matter (DM)/day, respectively). Conversely, barley straw was consumed in higher amounts in heifers fed with the TMR feeding method (0.3 v. 0.2 kg DM/day, respectively; P = 0.001). The total NDF intake was similar in both treatments. In contrast, NDF intake from barley straw and physically effective NDF intake were higher in heifers fed with the TMR feeding method than when fed with CH. Feeding method used to feed heifers did not affect the consumption of the different kinds of barley straw particles and eating and drinking behaviours but affected ruminating behaviour. Heifers fed TMR spent more time ruminating than heifers fed concentrate and barley straw separately (376 v. 287 min/day, respectively; P < 0.01). TMR as the feeding method in intensive beef production systems could be a good approach to promote roughage intake.

In the first experiment two groups of 11 Scottish Blackface ewes were given either 6·10 kg dried grass pellets plus 1·63 kg chopped dried grass daily (Group A) or 8·17 kg hay plus 1·32 kg oat pellets (Group B). During a 10-day experimental period individual dry-matter intakes ranged from 484 to 939 g/day (CV 22·3%) in Group A and from 613 to 883 g/day (CV 13·3%) in Group B. In Group B dry-matter intakes from oats were much more variable (10 to 149 g/day; CV 35·8%) than those from hay (530 to 762 g/day; CV 12·9%). Plasma protein-bound iodine (PBI) concentrations were significantly higher in the Group A sheep.

In the second experiment the treatments were: group-penned, group-fed (GG); group-penned, individually fed (GI); and individually penned, individually fed (II). Within each treatment there were two groups of 12 ewes; one group was given a high level of feeding (H) and the other a low level (L) for a 7-week experimental period. Allowances of pelleted concentrates ranged from 7 to 15 g/kg in the L groups and from 18 to 26 g/kg in the H groups. The same mean quantities per kg were given to GG sheep, and food intakes ranged from 5·7 to 17·7 g/kg (CV 25·3%) in GGL and from 12·5 to 30·8 g/kg (CV 24·8%) in GGH. Plasma PBI concentrations were significantly higher in L sheep than in H sheep, and higher in GG than in II. Plasma non-esterified fatty acid concentrations were significantly higher in L sheep than in H sheep and higher in GG than in GI and II.

The principal factors determining variations in food intakes between individual animals fed in groups and some of the nutritional implications of group-feeding sheep are discussed.

Flemish Giant (FG) and New Zealand White (NZW) purebreds and terminal crossbreds (TX) (Flemish Giant sires × Florida White-New Zealand White dams) were evaluated during a 10-month period for maternal and litter pre-weaning and post-weaning performance. For the doe traits studied, teat number was greatest and litter interval was shortest, while body weight at breeding age (154 days), litter weight at 21 days and day 1 to 21 food intake were lowest for crossbred does. These traits were similar for pure doe groups, with the exception of body weight, for which FG does were heavier. For the preweaning litter traits examined (no. = 101 litters), litter size born was smallest in the TX group (the purebred groups being similar) and was largest at weaning (28 days) for NZW. Proportion of kits born alive was lowest in FG litters, while the NZW and TX groups were comparable. Litter and average birth and weaning weights, litter daily gain, and doe and litter food intake (1 to 28 days) were all highest in FG litters and lowest in TX litters. Repeatability estimates (t) were low (t < 0·05) for litter size and birth weight traits, and were moderate to high (0·18 < t < 0·58) for the remaining maternally influenced characters. For the post-weaning litter traits studied (no. = 86 litters), NZW litters were larger in number and heavier at market age (56 days), and consumed more food from 28 to 56 days than FG and TX litters. Purebred FG litters, however, had heavier average market weights per rabbit, while purebred NZW and TX litters were similar. Mortality due to respiratory disease was higher in FG litters than in NZW and TX litters. Total mortality incidence was lowest in the TX group.

In a previous study, carnitine supplementation to piglets during the suckling period resulted in an increased total muscle fibre number at weaning in piglets of low birth weight. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether this effect is maintained until market age and whether this would attenuate the negative consequences of low birth weight on carcass and meat quality. Using a split-plot design with litter as block, sex as whole plot and treatment as subplot, the effects of early-postnatal l-carnitine supplementation on female and castrated male piglets of low birth weight were investigated on a total of 56 German Landrace piglets from 14 litters. From days 7 to 27 of age piglets were orally supplemented once daily with 400 mg of l-carnitine dissolved in 1 ml of water or received an equal volume of water without carnitine. From weaning (day 28) until slaughter (day 166 of age) all pigs were fed standard diets. At weaning, carnitine-supplemented piglets had a twofold increased concentration of free carnitine (P < 0.001) and a lower concentration of non-esterified fatty acids (P < 0.05) in blood plasma indicating that carnitine became bioavailable and increased fatty acid utilization during the period of supplementation. Growth performance was not influenced by treatment in any growth period. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry revealed no differences in body composition between groups in weeks 12, 16 and 20 of age. LW at slaughter, carcass weight, measures of meat yield and fat accretion, as well as body composition by chemical analyses and dissection of primal cuts did not differ between treatments. No differences between control and carnitine-treated pigs in total fibre number (P = 0.85) and fibre cross-sectional area (P = 0.68) in m. semitendinosus (ST) measured at slaughter could be observed. The carnitine group tended to exhibit a smaller proportion of slow-twitch oxidative fibres (P = 0.08), a greater proportion of fast-twitch glycolytic fibres (P = 0.11), and increased specific lactate dehydrogenase activity (P = 0.09) in ST indicating a more glycolytic muscle metabolism. Compared with the controls, a lower pH24 value was observed (P = 0.05) in ST muscle of carnitine-supplemented pigs, which – in castrates only – was associated with an increased drip loss (P < 0.01). Meat quality traits in m. longissimus were not influenced by treatment. In conclusion, our hypothesis that early-postnatal carnitine supplementation to piglets of low birth weight permanently increases myofibre number and improves later carcass and meat quality could not be confirmed by this experiment.

An experiment of a 2×2 full diallelic cross between two contemporary Iberian pig strains (Retinto: RR, and Torbiscal: TT) was conducted to estimate the crossbreeding effects for growth and carcass traits. Phenotypic records were obtained under intensive management and consisted of two different data sets. The first set comprised growth traits until weaning and was collected at two different farms (6236 and 1208 records, respectively). Specific data included individual piglet weight at birth and at weaning at 28 days and average daily gain from birth to weaning at 28 days (ADG28) for both RR and TT and their reciprocal crosses. The second set comprised growth data from birth to slaughter (~340 days and ~160 kg) and carcass traits from 349 individuals (randomly) sampled at weaning from the first dataset. Data were analyzed through a Bayesian analysis by using a reparameterization of Dickerson’s model that allowed estimation of the posterior distributions of the following crossbreeding effects: average maternal breed effect (gM), average paternal breed effect (gP) and individual heterosis (hI). Results showed that the relative magnitude of crossbreeding effects depends on the trait analyzed. Crosses where Torbiscal strain was used as mother (RT and TT) achieved the greatest performance for all growth traits at weaning, leading to remarkable gM effects. The most outstanding example is the case of ADG28 where the probability of relevance was one. In contrast, TR cross showed the greatest differences from RR cross for all growth at slaughter and carcass traits. These differences were mainly due to hI and gP crossbreeding parameters. In particular, the posterior mean of hI was more noticeable for live weight at slaughter, average daily gain at slaughter and carcass length, while gP was more relevant for hams (kg) and loins (kg) representing from 3% to10% of average performance of traits. Hence, growth traits at weaning did not reveal any notable advantage of the crossbreeding scheme because of the superiority of the Torbiscal strain with respect to its mothering ability and the small hI. However, results from growth and carcass traits at slaughter would support the implementation of a TR crossbred system. It would allow exploitation of both the gP of the Torbiscal strain and the hI between these two Iberian pig strains. Additionally, gP estimates and phenotypic differences between reciprocal crosses might suggest signs of the presence of paternal genetic imprinting in primal cuts traits.

The buffalo has a seasonal reproduction activity with mating and non-mating periods occurring from late autumn to winter and from late spring to beginning of autumn, respectively. Sperm glycocalyx plays an important role in reproduction as it is the first interface between sperm and environment. Semen quality is poorer during non-mating periods, so we aimed to evaluate if there were also seasonal differences in the surface glycosylation pattern of mating period spermatozoa (MPS) compared with non-mating period spermatozoa (NMPS). The complexity of carbohydrate structures makes their analysis challenging, and recently the high-throughput microarray approach is now providing a new tool into the evaluation of cell glycosylation status. We adopted a novel procedure in which spermatozoa was spotted on microarray slides, incubated with a panel of 12 biotinylated lectins and Cy3-conjugated streptavidin, and then signal intensity was detected using a microarray scanner. Both MPS and NMPS microarrays reacted with all the lectins and revealed that the expression of (i) O-glycans with NeuNAcα2-3Galβ1,3(±NeuNAcα2-6)GalNAc, Galβ1,3GalNAc and GalNAcα1,3(l-Fucα1,2)Galβ1,3/4GlcNAcβ1 was not season dependent; (ii) O-linked glycans terminating with GalNAc, asialo N-linked glycans terminating with Galβ1,4GlcNAc, GlcNAc, as well as α1,6 and α1,2-linked fucosylated oligosaccharides was predominant in MPS; (iii) high mannose- and biantennary complex types N-glycans terminating with α2,6 sialic acids and terminal galactose were lower in MPS. Overall, this innovative cell microarray method was able to identify specific glycosylation changes that occur on buffalo bull sperm surface during the mating and non-mating periods.

Sixty crossbred female and male castrate pigs were randomly allocated to five treatments in which 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80% of the ground maize in grower and finisher diets was replaced by triticale on an equal weight basis.

Pigs receiving the basal maize growing diet (0% tritcale) gained less than pigs fed the triticale diets (P<0·05). Pigs given the diets in which 20% of the maize was replaced by triticale gained significantly more than those given the other diets (P<0·05). Increasing replacement in the grower diets beyond 20% resulted in a linear decrease in consumption and weight gains (P<0·05). Feed conversion was similar for all diets which contained triticale.

The basal finisher diet, and the diet with 20% of the maize replaced, promoted better feed consumption and weight gain than the diets in which 40, 60 and 80% of the maize was replaced by triticale during the finishing phase and for the entire 109-day growing-finishing period. Carcass quality grade was higher for pigs fed the basal diet and the diet in which 20% of the maize was replaced by triticale (P<0·05 ) but there were no differences in the other parameters of carcass quality, nor in the composition, cooking quality and organoleptics,. of the longissimus muscle. Fatty acid profiles of the longissimus muscle indicated that palmitic and oleic acids were significantly higher (P<0·05 ) and linoleic and palmitoleic significantly lower (P<;0·05) in pigs given the basal and 20% replacement diets than in pigs given the other diets. The results show that triticale could replace maize partially (up to 20%) in diets for pigs.

Whole, moist barley treated with ammonia (A), whole, untreated barley (WU) and ground barley (G) were fed with hay and a little high protein, mixed concentrate. Digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter and crude fibre, assessed with young adult female sheep, were highest in diet A and lowest in diet G. The digestibilities of dry matter and crude fibre were also higher in diet WU than in diet G. Digestibility coefficients for dry matter and organic matter in barley, calculated by difference, appeared higher in A and in WU than in G. Young female sheep fed on the above diets from the age of 7 to 11 months ate more hay and gained more weight on A than on G; again diet WU was intermediate. Differences also occurred between the three groups as regards volatile fatty acids in the rumen fluid. Sheep on A or WU had a higher pH in the rumen fluid than those on G. Finally, sheep on A gave birth to more offspring than those on WU or G. All these differences were significant.

When cultured for an extended time, pig oocytes that matured in vitro to the stage of metaphase II undergo the complex process designated as ageing. Under our conditions, some pig oocytes aged 3 days remained at the stage of metaphase II (22%), but others underwent spontaneous parthenogenetic activation (45%), and still others perished through fragmentation (28%) or lysis (5%). Activation of protein kinases C (PKCs) using phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) protects oocytes from fragmentation. None of the oocytes were fragmented after 3 days of aging in 50 nM of PMA. A similar effect (8% of fragmented oocytes) was observed after a 3-day treatment of aging oocytes with 100 μM of 1-stearoyl-2arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol (STEAR). PMA and STEAR activate both calcium-dependent and calcium-independent PKCs. This combined effect on PKCs seems to be essential for the protection of oocytes from fragmentation. Neither the specific activator of calcium-dependent PKCs 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol (OLE) nor the specific activator of calcium-independent PKCs dipalmitoyl-l-α-phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-triphosphate heptaammonium salt (DIPALM) suppressed the fragmentation of aging pig oocytes. Twenty-one percentage of oocytes fragmented when aged for 3 days in 10 μM OLE and 26% of aged oocytes fragmented in 100 nM of DIPALM. However, fragmentation was significantly suppressed to 7% when the oocytes were exposed to the combination of both 10 μM OLE and 100 nM DIPALM. Aging pig oocytes cultured for 1 day with PMA maintained a high capability of being parthenogenetically activated (86% of activated oocytes), using calcium ionophore with 6-dimethylaminopurine. Ageing oocytes treated with PMA also had high capability of cleavage (82%) after their artificial parthenogenetic activation. However, their ability to develop to the stage of blastocyst (12%) was suppressed when compared with oocytes activated immediately after their maturation (29%).

A Number of experiments Bhattacharya and Sleiman, 1971; Bhattacharya and Lubbadah, 1971; Castle, 1972; Castle, Gill and Watson, 1981) have shown that dried sugar-beet pulp is equal to barley in feeding value when included in the concentrate portion of the diet given to milking dairy cows. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in feeding the undried pulp, from which some of the moisture has been removed by heavy presses. This product is known as ‘pressed pulp’.

The objective of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of genetic improvement via domestic selection and import for backfat thickness and time on test in a conventional pig breeding programme for Landrace (L) and Large-White (LW) breeds. Phenotype data was available for 25 553 L and 10 432 LW pigs born between 2002 and 2012 from four large-scale farms and 72 family farms. Pedigree information indicated whether each animal was born and registered within the domestic breeding programme or has been imported. This information was used for defining the genetic groups of unknown parents in a pedigree and the partitioning analysis. Breeding values were estimated using a Bayesian analysis of an animal model with and without genetic groups. Such analysis enabled full Bayesian inference of the genetic trends and their partitioning by the origin of germplasm. Estimates of genetic group indicated that imported germplasm was overall better than domestic and substantial changes in estimates of breeding values was observed when genetic group were fitted. The estimated genetic trends in L were favourable and significantly different from zero by the end of the analysed period. Overall, the genetic trends in LW were not different from zero. The relative contribution of imported germplasm to genetic trends was large, especially towards the end of analysed period with 78% and 67% in L and from 50% to 67% in LW. The analyses suggest that domestic breeding activities and sources of imported animals need to be re-evaluated, in particular in LW breed.

Modifying finishing strategies within established production systems has the potential to increase beef output and farm profit while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of finishing duration on animal performance of Holstein-Friesian (HF) bulls and steers and evaluate the profitability and GHG emissions of these finishing strategies. A total of 90 HF calves were assigned to a complete randomised block design; three bull and three steer finishing strategies. Calves were rotationally grazed in a paddock system for the first season at pasture, housed and offered grass silage ad libitum plus 1.5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily for the first winter and returned to pasture for a second season. Bulls were slaughtered at 19 months of age and either finished indoors on concentrates ad libitum for 100 days (19AL), finished at pasture supplemented with 5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily for 100 (19SP) or 150 days (19LP). Steers were slaughtered at 21 months of age and finished at pasture, supplemented with 5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily for 60 (21SP) and 110 days (21LP) or slaughtered at 24 months of age and finished indoors over the second winter on grass silage ad libitum plus 5 kg DM of concentrate per head daily (24MO). The Grange Dairy Beef Systems Model and the Beef Systems Greenhouse Gas Emissions Model were used to evaluate profitability and GHG emissions, respectively. Average daily gain during the finishing period (P<0.001), live weight at slaughter (P<0.01), carcass weight (P<0.05) and fat score (P<0.001) were greater for 19AL than 19SP and 19LP, respectively. Similarly, concentrate dry matter intake was greater for 19AL than 19SP; 19LP was intermediate (P<0.001). Live weight at slaughter (P<0.001), carcass weight (P<0.001), conformation score (P<0.05) and fat score (P<0.001) were greater for 24MO than 21SP and 21LP, respectively. During the finishing period concentrate dry matter intake was greater for 21LP than 21SP with 24MO intermediate; 542, 283 and 436 kg DM, respectively. Although pasture-based finishing strategies had lower gross output values, concentrate feed costs were also reduced thus net margin was greater than indoor finishing strategies. Reducing concentrate input increased GHG emissions for bulls and steers slaughtered at the same age, respectively. Although prolonging the finishing duration reduced GHG emissions for bull and steer production systems, finishing bulls and steers over a longer period at pasture did not enhance animal performance and profit.

Look ahead mate selection (LAMS) schemes have been proposed to improve longer-term genetic merit when both selection and crossbreeding are important. We investigate the performance of a LAMS scheme which includes both predicted progeny merit and predicted grandprogeny merit in a mate selection index (MSI). Simulation of a multi-breed beef population, with additive breeding values, direct and maternal breed effects and direct and maternal heterosis was used to compare response from the LAMS scheme to mate selection on progeny merit only (PROG), selection on estimated breeding value (EBV) followed by random mating (RAND) and a structured crossbreeding scheme (CROSS). An additional strategy, LAMS + CO, was similar to LAMS but included a negative weighting on the coancestry of selected animals in the MSI to reduce inbreeding. LAMS gave up to 3% greater response in generation eight than PROG, 4·5% greater response than RAND, and 15% greater response than CROSS. Results from LAMS + CO were very similar to LAMS but inbreeding was 11% less from LAMS + CO at generation eight. The advantage of LAMS and LAMS + CO over PROG in later generations was hypothesized to be the result of positive assortative mating and greater use of maternal effects. Evidence to support the hypothesis of assortative mating was a positive significant correlation of EBVs of mates (sires and dams) in LAMS and LAMS + CO but not in PROG. Strategies PROG, LAMS and LAMS + CO all created closed populations of animals with optimum composite breed proportions.

Records on lamb survival were available for 757 lambs, the progeny of 33 rams. Purebred lambs were of the Nali and Lohi breeds and crossbred lambs were produced by mating Nali ewes to Nellore or Mandya rams, and Lohi ewes to Nellore rams. For the flock as a whole 93% of those born survived to 14 days of age and 86% to weaning. A least-squares analysis of variance showed that among the factors investigated only lamb's weight at birth significantly affected survival to 14 days of age, and lamb's weight at birth, ewe's weight at lambing and the year of birth had significant effects on lamb survival from 15 days to weaning. Heritability estimates for lamb survival were based on half sib correlations. For the period from birth to 14 days of age the estimates were 0·08 for pure Nali lambs and 0·03 for the whole flock, and for the period from 15 days to weaning the estimates were 0·10 and 0·26 for the two groups respectively.
