The herd dynamic milk (HDM) model is a dynamic model capable of simulating the performance of individual dairy animals (from birth to death), with a daily time step. Within this study, the HDM model is described and evaluated in relation to milk production, body condition score (BCS) and BCS change throughout lactation by comparing model simulations against data from published experimental studies. The model’s response to variation in genetic potential, herbage allowance and concentrate supplementation was tested in a sensitivity analysis. Data from experiments in Ireland and France over a 3-year period (2009–11) were used to complete the evaluation. The aim of the Irish experiment was to determine the impact of different stocking rates (SRs) (SR1: 3.28 cow/ha, SR2: 2.51 cow/ha) on key physical, biological and economic performance. The aim of the French experiment was to evaluate over a prolonged time period, the ability of two breeds of dairy cows (Holstein and Normande) to produce and to reproduce under two feeding strategies (high level and low level) in the context of compact calving. The model evaluation was conducted at the herd level with separate evaluations for the primiparous and multiparous cows. The evaluation included the two extreme SRs for the Irish experiment, and an evaluation at the overall herd and individual animal level for the different breeds and feeding levels for the French data. The comparison of simulation and experimental data for all scenarios resulted in a relative prediction error, which was consistently <15% across experiments for weekly milk production and BCS. In relation to BCS, the highest root mean square error was 0.27 points of BCS, which arose for Holstein cows in the low feeding group in late lactation. The model responded in a realistic fashion to variation in genetic potential for milk production, herbage allowance and concentrate supplementation.

We studied the effects of the frequently used glucogenic dietary supplementation in dairy herds and the hormonal changes occurring during the normal estrous cycle on the composition and concentration of milk lipid components. Holstein dairy cows were synchronized with two injections of prostaglandin F2α (estrus=day 0). Animals were held as controls or drenched for 11 days (day −3 to day 8 of the cycle) with 850 ml/day liquid propylene glycol (treatment, n=13 per group). Blood and milk samples were collected on day 1 and 8 of the cycle. In both groups, plasma progesterone concentration increased ∼10-fold between 1 and 8 days post-estrus. Milk fatty acid composition was associated primarily with estrous-cycle day: polyunsaturated fatty acids increased by 16%, n-6 by 15% and n-3 by 1% from day 1 to 8 post-estrus. Polar lipid composition was also altered by cycle day: phosphatidylethanolamine concentration was 2-fold and 1.5-fold higher on day 1 v. day 8 post-estrus in the control and treatment groups, respectively. Phosphatidylserine concentration in milk was also affected by cycle day by treatment interaction (P=0.04). A progesterone level by treatment interaction influenced the triglyceride-to-phospholipid ratio in the milk (P=0.02). The results suggest that progesterone plays a role in modulating milk lipid composition and structure. Therefore, strategies designed to alter milk lipid composition should consider the cow’s reproductive status.

Two groups of 28 Finnish Landrace (FL) lambs were given (group Mg) or denied (group O) access to a magnesium (Mg)-rich mineral mixture to establish its role in the hitherto frequent development of diarrhoea in the flock. Diarrhoea developed in most lambs but became marginally worse in group Mg (P < 0·05) by weaning. At weaning, 28% of the lambs had salivary sodium: potassium (Na: K) ratios < 4 indicating Na deficiency but pasture was not low in Na (60·9 mmol/kg dry matter (DM)) and providing the mineral mixture (which also contained Na) did not alleviate the deficiency. Raised plasma pepsinogen (PP) concentrations were indicative ofabomasal parasitism and all lambs were drenched with levamisole. Groups were subdivided at weaning, either continuing on their previous treatments (groups Mg/Mg and O/O) or being offered pure salt (NaCl) (groups Mg/Na and O/Na). Mineral consumption was measured from weaning and varied widely between groups and with time for the first 2 weeks. Early consumption was maximal at 19·6 g per head per day in group Mg/Mg and zero in group Mg/Na and faecal DM was significantly lower in the former group (165 v. 223 (s.d. 16·9) g/kg DM). All groups showed an improvement in Na status after weaning followed by a decline and NaCl consumption showed opposite changes about a mean of 6·3 g per head per day: faecal DM became uniformly low (ca. 200 g/kg fresh weight) in all groups. A further rise in PP prompted a second treatment with levamisole 6 weeks after weaning. When salivary Na: K was low (1 and 7 weeks after weaning), a significant relationship (P = 0·002) was found between salivary K (mmol/l), faecal DM (g/kg) and plasma pepsinogen (PP U per l;):

K = 22·9 + 4·5 PP – 0·047 DM (d.f. 82: r = 0·34).

Nematodiasis may have caused an ion imbalance and an associated diarrhoea, inducing a craving for NaCl which was ill-met by a mixture rich in laxative Mg.

A total of eight Simmental heifers (114 ± 3.2 days old and weighing 118 ± 3.8 kg BW) were used to study the effects of feeding method on intake and animal behaviour in a crossover design experiment. Treatments consisted of feeding concentrate and chopped barley straw as (1) choice (CH; concentrate and straw in separate feedbunks) or (2) total mixed ration (TMR; concentrate and straw in one feedbunk). Feeds were offered on an ad libitum basis, but always maintaining a concentrate to straw ratio of 90 to 10. The experiment was performed in two 21-day periods, and sampling was carried out in the last week of each period. At the end of each period, treatment was changed for heifers; hence, the final number of animals per treatment was eight. Intake was recorded over 7 consecutive days. BW was recorded at the beginning and the end of the experiment and on day 21 of each experimental period. Barley straw was coarsely chopped with a chopping machine. Once chopped, all the straw was handled for particle size separation using the 2-screen Penn State Particle Separator and only material of more than 8 mm was used to feed the heifers. Animal behaviour was video-recorded for 24 h on day 2 and day 6 of each experimental period. Concentrate intake and total dry matter intake of heifers fed with the CH feeding method were higher (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05) than when fed with TMR (5.1 and 5.3 v. 4.7 and 5.0 kg dry matter (DM)/day, respectively). Conversely, barley straw was consumed in higher amounts in heifers fed with the TMR feeding method (0.3 v. 0.2 kg DM/day, respectively; P = 0.001). The total NDF intake was similar in both treatments. In contrast, NDF intake from barley straw and physically effective NDF intake were higher in heifers fed with the TMR feeding method than when fed with CH. Feeding method used to feed heifers did not affect the consumption of the different kinds of barley straw particles and eating and drinking behaviours but affected ruminating behaviour. Heifers fed TMR spent more time ruminating than heifers fed concentrate and barley straw separately (376 v. 287 min/day, respectively; P < 0.01). TMR as the feeding method in intensive beef production systems could be a good approach to promote roughage intake.

Fractional passage rates form a fundamental element within modern feed evaluation systems for ruminants, but knowledge on feed-specific fractional passage is largely lacking. Commonly applied tracer techniques based on externally applied markers, such as chromium-mordanted neutral detergent fibre (Cr-NDF), have been criticised for behaving differently to feed particles. This study describes the use of the carbon stable isotope ratio (13C : 12C) as an internal digesta marker to quantify the fractional passage rate of concentrates through the digestive tract of dairy cows. In a crossover study, five dairy cows were fed low (24.6%) and high (52.6%) levels of concentrates (dry matter (DM) basis) and received a pulse-dosed Cr-NDF and 13C isotopes. The latter was administered orally by exchanging part of the dietary concentrates of low 13C natural abundance with a pulse dose of maize bran-based concentrates of high 13C natural abundance. Fractional passage rates from the rumen (K1) and from the large intestine (K2) were determined from faecal marker concentrations of Cr-NDF and of 13C in the DM (13C-DM), NDF (13C-NDF) and neutral detergent soluble (13C-NDS). No differences in K1 estimates were found for the two concentrate levels fed but significant differences between markers (P<0.001) were observed. Faecal Cr-NDF excretions gave lower K1 estimates (0.037–0.039/h) than 13C-DM (0.054–0.056/h) and 13C-NDF (0.061–0.063/h). The 13C-NDS was calculated by the difference of 13C in the DM and NDF, and K1 values (0.039–0.043/h) were comparable to Cr-NDF. Total mean retention time was considerably higher for Cr-NDF (40.9–42.0 h) as compared to 13C-DM and 13C-NDF (32.0–33.5 h; P<0.001). The accuracy of the curve fits for Cr-NDF and 13C-DM and 13C-NDF was overall good (mean prediction error of 9.9–13.9%). Fractional passage rate of Cr-NDF was comparable to studies where this marker was assumed to represent the fractional passage of roughages. However, K1 estimates based on the 13C : 12C ratio varied considerably from studies based on external markers. Our results suggest that the use of 13C isotopes as digesta passage markers can provide feed component-specific K1 estimates for concentrates and provides new insight into passage kinetics of NDF from technologically treated compound feed.

Sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) can reduce the production efficiency and impair the welfare of cattle, potentially in all production systems. The aim of this study was to characterise measurable postmortem observations from divergently managed intensive beef finishing farms with high rates of concentrate feeding. At the time of slaughter, we obtained samples from 19 to 20 animals on each of 6 beef finishing units (119 animals in total) with diverse feeding practices, which had been subjectively classified as being high risk (three farms) or low risk (three farms) for SARA on the basis of the proportions of barley, silage and straw in the ration. We measured the concentrations of histamine, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lactate and other short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in ruminal fluid, LPS and SCFA in caecal fluid. We also took samples of the ventral blind sac of the rumen for histopathology, immunohistopathology and gene expression. Subjective assessments were made of the presence of lesions on the ruminal wall, the colour of the lining of the ruminal wall and the shape of the ruminal papillae. Almost all variables differed significantly and substantially among farms. Very few pathological changes were detected in any of the rumens examined. The animals on the high-risk diets had lower concentrations of SCFA and higher concentrations of lactate and LPS in the ruminal fluid. Higher LPS concentrations were found in the caecum than the rumen but were not related to the risk status of the farm. The diameters of the stratum granulosum, stratum corneum and of the vasculature of the papillae, and the expression of the gene TLR4 in the ruminal epithelium were all increased on the high-risk farms. The expression of IFN-γ and IL-1β and the counts of cluster of differentiation 3 positive and major histocompatibility complex class two positive cells were lower on the high-risk farms. High among-farm variation and the unbalanced design inherent in this type of study in the field prevented confident assignment of variation in the dependent variables to individual dietary components; however, the CP percentage of the total mixed ration DM was the factor that was most consistently associated with the variables of interest. Despite the strong effect of farm on the measured variables, there was wide inter-animal variation.

High-starch diets (HSDs) fed to high-producing ruminants are often responsible for rumen dysfunction and could impair animal health and production. Feeding HSDs are often characterized by transient rumen pH depression, accurate monitoring of which requires costly or invasive methods. Numerous clinical signs can be followed to monitor such diet changes but no specific indicator is able to make a statement at animal level on-farm. The aim of this pilot study was to assess a combination of non-invasive indicators in dairy cows able to monitor a HSD in experimental conditions. A longitudinal study was conducted in 11 primiparous dairy cows fed with two different diets during three successive periods: a 4-week control period (P1) with a low-starch diet (LSD; 13% starch), a 4-week period with an HSD (P2, 35% starch) and a 3-week recovery period (P3) again with the LSD. Animal behaviour was monitored throughout the experiment, and faeces, urine, saliva, milk and blood were sampled simultaneously in each animal at least once a week for analysis. A total of 136 variables were screened by successive statistical approaches including: partial least squares-discriminant analysis, multivariate analysis and mixed-effect models. Finally, 16 indicators were selected as the most representative of a HSD challenge. A generalized linear mixed model analysis was applied to highlight parsimonious combinations of indicators able to identify animals under our experimental conditions. Eighteen models were established and the combination of milk urea nitrogen, blood bicarbonate and feed intake was the best to detect the different periods of the challenge with both 100% of specificity and sensitivity. Other indicators such as the number of drinking acts, fat:protein ratio in milk, urine, and faecal pH, were the most frequently used in the proposed models. Finally, the established models highlight the necessity for animals to have more than 1 week of recovery diet to return to their initial control state after a HSD challenge. This pilot study demonstrates the interest of using combinations of non-invasive indicators to monitor feed changes from a LSD to a HSD to dairy cows in order to improve prevention of rumen dysfunction on-farm. However, the adjustment and robustness of the proposed combinations of indicators need to be challenged using a greater number of animals as well as different acidogenic conditions before being applied on-farm.

This study evaluated whether differences in milk fever incidence among Swedish dairy herds could be explained partly by differences in mineral feeding during the last weeks of gestation. A case–control study was performed on dietary risk factors for a high incidence of milk fever at the herd level using information regarding feeding and management of the dry cows collected in a written questionnaire distributed by post in spring 2008. The study was conducted from September 2004 to August 2007. Data on the diets fed to dry cows, with an emphasis on the amounts of minerals (Ca, P, Mg and K) fed 3 weeks before calving and at calving, were obtained from 30 herds belonging to the 100 Swedish herds with the highest recorded incidence of veterinary treatment for milk fever (>8.8%) and from 22 herds with no recorded milk fever treatments. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that a linear increase in the total amount of K and less than 26 g of Mg/day fed to dry cows 3 weeks before calving was associated with an increased risk of high milk fever incidence. A large increase in the amount of dry matter (DM) fed (>3.1 kg DM extra per day at calving compared with 3 weeks before calving) was associated with a higher incidence of milk fever, but no differences were found for Ca or P intake. Breed composition, herd average milk yield and age composition of the herd did not explain any of the observed differences between the case and the control herds. The results indicate that differences in the frequency of milk fever among herds can be associated with differences in mineral feeding of the dry cows. A high amount of K in the diet may increase the risk of milk fever linearly, whereas Mg should probably be fed at a higher level than the current Nordic recommendation to prevent milk fever.

Sixty-four pigs were given diets containing lactose or starch as the major source of carbohydrate in two separate experiments conducted between 7 and 28 days of age.

In the first experiment, pigs were offered lactose, wheat starch, wheat or extruded wheat. Performance over the whole experimental period, of pigs given lactose or wheat, was similar, but greater than that of pigs given wheat starch. Apparent digestion of wheat diets was less than that of the other diets. In the second experiment, performance of pigs given lactose or wheat was also similar over the whole experiment. However, between 7 and 14 days of age in both experiments, weight gains and food conversion ratios of pigs given wheat were less than those of pigs given lactose.

The activity of maltase and amylase in the intestinal mucosa, and amylase in the pancreas, increased between 7 and 28 days of age. The maltase and amylase activity in the intestinal mucosa and pancreas of the pigs given wheat was greater than that of the pigs given lactose, while the activity of lactase in the intestinal mucosa was greater in the pigs given diets containing lactose than in those pigs given wheat.

In a third experiment, it was found that most of the hydrolysis and absorption of starch occurred in the duodenum and jejunum of the pigs, and had been completed before the ileum.

A market conformity tool, based on technological meat quality parameters, was developed within the Q-PorkChains project, to be included in a global sustainability evaluation of pig farming systems. The specific objective of the market conformity tool was to define a scoring system based on the suitability of meat to elaborate the main pork products, according to their market shares based on industry requirements, in different pig farming systems. The tool was based on carcass and meat quality parameters that are commonly used for the assessment of technological quality, which provide representative and repeatable data and are easily measurable. They were the following: cold carcass weight; lean meat percentage; minimum subcutaneous back fat depth at m. gluteus medius level, 45 postmortem and ultimate pH (measured at 24-h postmortem) in m. longissimus lumborum and semimembranosus; meat colour; drip losses and intramuscular fat content in a m. longissimus sample. Five categories of pork products produced at large scale in Europe were considered in the study: fresh meat, cooked products, dry products, specialties and other meat products. For each of the studied farming systems, the technological meat quality requirements, as well as the market shares for each product category within farming system, were obtained from the literature and personal communications from experts. The tool resulted in an overall conformity score that enabled to discriminate among systems according to the degree of matching of the achieved carcass and meat quality with the requirements of the targeted market. In order to improve feasibility, the tool was simplified by selecting ultimate pH at m. longissimus or semimembranosus, minimum fat thickness measured at the left half carcass over m. gluteus medius and intramuscular fat content in a m. longissimus sample as iceberg indicators. The overall suitability scores calculated by using both the complete and the reduced tools presented good correlation and the results obtained were similar. The tool could be considered as robust enough to discriminate among different systems, since it was tested in a wide range of them. It also can be used to detect improvement opportunities to enhance sustainability of pig farming systems. The final objective of the study was achieved, since the market suitability tool could be used in an integrated sustainability analysis of pig farming systems.

In a dissection trial in The Netherlands two subpopulations were distinguished: gilts and castrated males. The sampling scheme, which emphasizes extreme values for the proportion of lean meat in the carcass, was followed for the two sexes separately, to ensure sufficient accuracy for a comparison between them. Significant differences between the prediction formulae for the lean meat proportion for the two sexes were found. Since it is not possible to use separate prediction formulae for the sexes in Dutch slaughterhouses, the formulae had to be combined into one overall prediction formula. In this paper it is shown how the separate prediction formulae for the sexes may be combined, utilizing additional data, not involving dissection, which were easily collected on the slaughterline, at little extra cost. The method can be extended to cover any number of subpopulations. Two objectives can be achieved at the same time: subpopulations may be compared accurately on the basis of a stratified sample and from the results of the comparison an efficient, unbiased, overall prediction formula may be distilled.

Growth rates and chemical compositions were measured with ram lambs grazing pure stands of perennial ryegrass, timothy, cocksfoot and tall fescue. A group of lambs slaughtered at the start of the trial enabled estimates to be made of the live-weight gains over the summer and the composition of these gains. The composition of the grass was also measured in samples taken at weekly intervals and estimates were made of the nutrients consumed from the different grass plots.

The quantities of ash, Ca, P and Mg in the empty bodies of the lambs were within the range of published values from similar studies. They support the contention that grass-fed lambs tend to have larger contents of ash, Ca and P in their empty bodies than concentrate-fed lambs of similar weight. Perennial ryegrass provided a superior diet in that lambs eating this grass grew more quickly, with leaner tissues and higher levels of ash, Ca and P in their empty-body gains. Lambs consuming tall fescue grew most slowly but their mineral contents were as large as the ryegrass-fed lambs when data were adjusted for differences in empty-body weight. Lambs fed on timothy or cocksfoot were the most poorly mineralized in spite of consuming considerably more Ca, P and Mg than the lambs on ryegrass. The data suggest that the efficiencies of absorption of Ca and P in ryegrass may be high, at about 0·64 for Ca and 0·71 for P.

The present study was undertaken to assist conservation and improvement schemes in the Sahiwal breed of cattle in Pakistan. A data set, consisting of records of 244 pure Sahiwal breeding bulls and 5247 cows, the latter representing about 80% of all recorded Sahiwal cows in Pakistan born during a period covering about 20 years, was analysed with regard to inbreeding, additive relationships, effective population size and generation intervals. Average inbreeding coefficients of 1224 cows and 49 bulls, for which at least the grandparents and great-grandsires were known, were 0·043 and 0·046, respectively. About two-thirds of the inbreeding was due to matings between animals with parents or grandparents in common. The mean additive relationship among the cows was 0·062, with within-herd averages ranging from 0·087 to 0·358. The average population size in a subdata set of recorded Sahiwal cattle from 1980 to 1984 was 1612, whereas the most likely estimate of the effective population size was about 30 animals for the same active breeding population. The study indicated the immediate need for an active conservation programme whereby the Sahiwal subpopulations of India and Kenya also should be involved.

Eighty multiparous Camborough hybrid female pigs (sows) and their litters, on average 15 days post partum, were housed in groups of five in multi-accommodation pens. The sows were fed ad libitum on a proprietary diet containing 160 g crude protein per kg from grouping to 30 days post partum, when they were fed to scale twice daily in individual feeders until weaning at 42 days post partum. One of four Large White male pigs (boars) was introduced to each group on the day following grouping, each boar being run with four groups.

Oestrus occurred in 62 sows, on average 10·2 ± 3·3 days after grouping. The differences between groups in the interval from grouping and boar introduction to the onset of oestrus were statistically significant (P < 0·01). Neither the incidence nor the timing of oestrus could be related to the identity of the boar.

Regression analysis revealed relationships between a number of independent variables and the incidence and timing of lactational oestrus. Sows which gained more live weight from farrowing to weaning and whose litters consumed more creep food were more likely to show lactational oestrus. Sows were slower to show lactational oestrus when they gained little weight from farrowing to weaning, had lower live weights at weaning and gained less weight from the previous weaning, despite eating comparatively more food during grouping. The sows which took longer to show lactational oestrus also had heavier piglets at grouping and more piglets in their litters at weaning. The difficulties arising in the interpretation of these results are discussed.

The effect of insulated (IN) and uninsulated (UN) buildings on food intake, performance and body temperature of sheep was studied over 4 years. The lowest average monthly temperature was -13·1°C. In the UN the temperature was on average 6-6°C higher than outside but the temperature in the IN remained fairly constant and was close to 10°C. Summarized for all 4 years the roughage intake was proportionately 0·02 higher in the UN than in IN (P > 0·05). There was no effect of treatment on weight gain, but the weight of the fleece was higher in IN than in UN (1·74 kg v. 1·66 kg per sheep). The mean age at first oestrus was 222 days. There was no difference in the length of pregnancy and lambing percentage was 185% in both treatments. The average birth weight was higher for lambs born in UN than IN (5·10 v. 4·95 kg), but the weight at weaning was the same. On only one occasion was the rectal temperature lower for ewes in UN than IN before shearing (38·7°C v. 39·2°C). After shearing no effect of treatment was found except for the 1st year, but in year 2 there was an interaction between plane of nutrition and housing. Results clearly indicated that uninsulated buildings are well suited for sheep.

Genetic parameters for birth and 240-day weaning weights in Gudali and Wakwa cattle breeds in a tropical environment in Cameroon were estimated by derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood procedure using singletrait animal models with maternal effects. Performance data covered the period 1971 through 1985. Heritability estimates for direct effects of live weights at birth and weaning were 0·39 (s.e. 0·10) and 0·27 (s.e. 0·09) in Gudali cattle and 0·65 (s.e. 0·15) and 0·29 (s.e. 0·13) in Wakwa cattle, respectively. Corresponding heritability estimates for maternal effects were 0·06 (s.e. 0·06) and 0·20 (s.e. 0·09) in Gudali cattle and 0·22 (s.e. 0·08) and 0·27 (s.e. 0·12) in Wakwa cattle. Estimates of genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects were negative and substantial for birth weight in Gudali (0·86) and Wakwa (-0·93) and for weaning weight in Gudali (-0·68). The estimate for weaning weight in Wakwa (-0·39) was lower. It was evident from the results that selection on individual performance was likely to yield substantial genetic progress in these traits. Although heritability estimates for maternal effects were low, the negative direct-maternal genetic relationships indicated that selection for these traits should not ignore the maternal component.

A survey of dairy herds was undertaken to establish an empirical model for the goat lactation curve. The adopted model will be used to predict milk output from commercially kept dairy goats. It is also desirable for the model parameters to be easily interpretable in terms of shape and scale of the curve.

Records for 152 goat lactations from a Research Institute and 255 lactations in five commercial herds were analysed. Three groups of equations were fitted to individual goats from the Research Institute herd. The most suitable model was selected after study of residuals and consideration of the model parameters.

The adopted model was of the form: y = A exp(B(1 + n '/2)n' + Cn ‘2 – 1·01‘sol;'n) where y = daily yield in kg; n = day of lactation (post parturition); and n' = (n - 150)/100.

This model was then validated with lactation data from the five commercial herds. There was no evidence to reject the adopted model.

The changes taking place with age in energy turnover of dairy cattle are largely unknown. It is unclear whether the efficiency of energy utilization in digestion (characterized by faecal and methane energy losses) and in metabolism (characterized by urine and heat energy losses) is altered with age. In the present study, energy balance data were obtained from 30 lactating Brown Swiss dairy cows aged between 2 and 10 years, and 12 heifers from 0.5 to 2 years of age. In order to evaluate a possible dependence of age effects on diet type, half of the cattle each originated from two herds kept at the same farm, which were fed either on a forage-only diet or on the same forage diet but complemented with 5 kg/day of concentrate since their first calving. During 2 days, the gaseous exchange of the animals was quantified in open-circuit respiration chambers, followed by an 8-day period of feed, faeces, urine and milk collection. Daily amounts and energy contents were used to calculate complete energy balances. Age and feeding regime effects were analysed by parametric regression analysis where BW, milk yield and hay proportion in forage as consumed were considered as covariates. Relative to intake of gross energy, the availability of metabolizable energy (ME) increased with age. This was not the result of an increasing energy digestibility, but of proportionately lower energy losses with methane (following a curvilinear relationship with the greatest losses in middle-aged cows) and urine (continuously declining). The efficiency of utilization of ME for milk production (kl) increased with age. Potential reasons include an increase in the propionate-to-acetate ratio in the rumen because of a shift away from fibre degradation and methane formation as well as lower urine energy losses. The greater kl allowed older cows to accrete more energy reserves in the body. As expected, offering concentrate enhanced digestibility, metabolizability and metabolic utilization of energy. Age and feeding regime did not interact significantly. In conclusion, older cows seem to have digestive and metabolic strategies to use dietary energy to a certain degree more efficiently than younger cows.

Growth rate is a major component of feed efficiency when estimating residual feed intake (RFI). Quantile regression (QR) methodology can be used to identify animals with different growth trajectories. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of QR to identify phenotypic and genetic differences in pigs selected for low RFI. Using performance data on 750 Yorkshire pigs selected for low RFI, individual average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), RFI and Gompertz growth curve parameters (asymptotic weight (a), inflection point (b) and decay parameter (c)) were estimated for each pig. Using QR methodology, three Gompertz growth curves were estimated for the whole population for three quantiles (0.1, 0.5 and 0.9) of the BW data. Each animal was classified into one of the quantile regression groups (QRG) based on their overall Euclidian distance between each observed and estimated BW from the quantile growth curves. These three curves were also estimated using only part of the data (generations −1 to 3, and −1 to 4) in order to evaluate the agreement classification rate of animals from later generations into QRGs. We evaluated the effect of QRG on growth parameters and performance traits. Genetic parameters were estimated for these traits, as well as for QRG. In addition, genetic trends for each QRG were estimated. Three distinct growth curves were observed for animals classified into either quantiles 0.1 (QRG0.1), 0.5 (QRG0.5) or 0.9 (QRG0.9). When only part of the data was used to estimate quantile growth curves, all animals from QRG0.1 were correctly classified in their group. Animals in QRG0.1 had significantly lower ADFI, ADG and RFI, and greater a, b and c than animals in the other groups. Quantile regression groups analysed as a trait was highly heritable (0.41) and had high (0.8) and moderate (0.46) genetic correlations with ADG and RFI, respectively. Selection for reduced RFI increased the number of animals classified as QRG0.1 in the population. Overall, downward genetic trends were observed for all traits as a function of selection for reduced RFI. However, QRG0.1 was the only group that had a positive genetic trend for ADG. Altogether, these results indicate that selection for reduced RFI changes the shape of growth curves in Yorkshire in pigs, and that QR methodology was able to identify animals having different genetic potential for feed efficiency, bringing a new opportunity to improve selection for reduced RFI.

An experiment was carried out with 20 male veal calves to study differences in energy metabolism between pure Dutch Friesian and Holstein Friesian crossbred calves, containing a high proportion of Holstein Friesian genes (0·79). Two metabolizable energy (ME) intakes were given. The effects of genotype and ME intake on live-weight gain and its fat and protein composition were measured by indirect calorimetry and by the total collection of faeces and urine. Energy and nitrogen balances were measured for each calf during the last 5 weeks of the fattening period of 22 weeks.

The difference in live-weight gain between the Holstein Friesian crossbreds and the Dutch Friesian calves was not significant but small differences in protein and fat composition of live-weight gain were found. Fat gain was closely related to ME intake (r = 0·95), but the correlation coefficient between ME intake and protein gain was only 0-36. Live-weight gain had a high correlation with protein gain (r = 0·70) but a lower correlation with fat gain (r = 0·29).

Veal calves at the end of the fattening period had a declining protein gain as age increased. Calves given a high ME intake (> 2 × maintenance) may require diets containing less than 216 g crude protein per kg diet at the end of the fattening period.

The study indicates that Holstein Friesian crossbred veal calves and Dutch Friesian veal calves have similar ME requirements.
