The effects of type of housing (outdoors on earth v. confinement on concrete) and system of rearing (single v. group) on age at puberty and expression of libido in boars were examined. Boars kept on earth lots and reared in groups reached puberty earlier and demonstrated greater sexual aggressiveness compared with contemporary boars maintained under other treatment combinations. Additionally, the effect of rearing boars either in all-male groups or withprepubertal gilts was examined. Age at puberty was not affected by the presence of females, but boars reared without females attained a higher libido score.

Production in 210 mature Corriedale ewes first mated between 7 and 11 or at 18 months of age was studied at Paysandu, Uruguay. Ewes were classified into one of the following five classes according to their oestrous and lambing performance in 1968: (1) reared a lamb; (2) lambed but lamb died; (3) mated but did not lamb; (4) oestrus detected by vasectomized ram, true mating deferred for 12 months; and (4) no oestrus, mating deferred for 12 months. Records on flock performance and mortality were kept from all ewes from 1969 to 1973, when the dental status of all ewes present was assessed.

There were no significant differences between classes in number of ewes lambing per ewe exposed to the ram, number of lambs born per ewe exposed to the ram, number of lambs weaned per ewe exposed to the ram, weight of lamb weaned per ewe exposed to the ram, and pre-mating body weight.

Greasy fleece weight varied significantly (P < 0·01) with class of ewe. The least squares means for ewe classes 1 to 5 were 3·93, 3·99, 4·06,4·12 and 3·92 kg respectively. Class 4 ewes differed significantly (P < 0·01) from class 1 ewes and from class, 3 and 5 ewes (P < 0·05). Class 3 ewes differed significantly (P < 0·05) from class 1 ewes. Other differences were not significant.

Ewe mortality between 1969 and 1973 was independent of class of ewe. The dental status of ewes appeared to vary with class of ewe. Early mating of Corriedale ewes apparently had no adverse effects on mature reproductive performance, but somewhat reduced wool production. If mating is to take place for the first time at 18 months of age, ewes that have shown oestrus previously are likely to exhibit greater overall productivity (wool plus lambs).

The performance of Israeli-Friesian male calves on six rations, including two levels (15% and 30%) of ground wheat straw and oatvetch hay in pelleted mixtures, and the same two levels of ground straw in non-pelleted mixtures, was examined.

Daily live-weight and carcass gain were higher on the lower level of both roughages. The differences in performance on hay and straw were insignificant. Feed intake was higher on the 15% level of both roughages when pelleted but the energy conversion ratio was higher on pelleted rations of both levels of straw.

The dressing percentage was higher for animals on pelleted rations. There was no significant difference in percentage fat trim, percentage bone or percentage saleable meat in the carcasses. There was 20% more kidney, pelvic and cod fat on the lower level of roughage.

The digestibility of organic matter was higher on rations with the lower level of roughage, and on the pelleted rations compared with the non-pelleted at equal level of roughage. This was not the case for the digestibility of crude fibre. Nitrogen retention was significantly higher on the lower levels of straw and on the pelleted rations of a similar level, and was higher on hay rations than on straw rations. Ration differences in the molar proportions of volatile fatty acids in the rumen liquor were detected.

Pelleting appeared to improve the nutritive value of straw.

1. Two experiments are described in which the effects of ammonium acetate on the yield and composition of the milk from heifers given (1) a fat-depressing diet consisting mainly of cereals or (2) a normal diet of silage and sugar beet pulp for maintenance and rationed concentrates according to yield.

2. In the first experiment acetate increased the content of butterfat in the milk from 2·76 to 3·12. This difference was almost significant (P < 0·1). There was no significant effect of acetate on the total solids content of the milk.

3. In the second experiment acetate very slightly depressed the total solids and the butterfat content of the milk.

4. In Experiment 1 there was no significant difference between treatments i n the pH of rumen liquor, or in its concentration of total steam volatile fatty acids, but the proportions of acetic and isobutyric acids were higher on the acetate treatment.

5. In Experiment 2 there were no differences in the relative proportions of the fatty acids although the total steam volatile fatty acid concentration was higher on the acetate treatment.

Free amino acid (AA) levels in plasma, muscle and liver were measured in growing chickens given either high or low protein diets varying in quality. In experiment 1, they were force-fed once a day (09.00 h), for 4 days, at about 1·5 × M level, a nitrogen-free (NF) diet and then, on day 5, they were given either diet NF or isoenergetic (13·1 kj metabolizable energy (ME) per g dry matter (DM)) and isonitrogenous high protein diets (200 g crude protein (CP) per kg) based on casein (C), lupin (L), soya bean (SB), faba bean (FB), field pea (FP), vetch (V) or bitter vetch (B) as the sole source of protein. In experiment 2, chickens were force-fed twice a day (09.00 h and 18.00 h), for 3 days, at about 1·9 × M level, with four isoenergetic (13·1 k) ME per kg DM) and isonitrogenous low protein diets (120 g CP per kg) based on SB, FP, V or B as the sole source of protein. On days 5 (experiment 1) and 4 (experiment 2) samples of plasma, muscle and liver were taken for AA analysis over 3 to 4h after morning meal.

In general, within experiments, no significant differences in AA concentrations in plasma, muscle or liver among diets were found. However, there was a qualitative but not a quantitative agreement between the AA abundance in tissues and the AA rank of dietary protein. Moreover, when pooling data from experiments 1 and 2, significant regressions were found between the levels of threonine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine and proline in plasma, of lysine, alanine, glutamic acid, glycine and proline in muscle or that of proline in liver and the corresponding amounts ingested with the different diets. Under the conditions of these experiments, however, it was not possible to establish conclusively a direct relationship between the level of free amino acids in tissues and dietary protein quality.

It is generally recognised that spring grass does not provide a balanced ration for the grazing animal, since it contains excess of nitrogenous substances in relation to carbohydrate. Young lucerne similarly contains more nitrogen than is necessary to provide a balanced feed. When grazing these types of herbage, the animal wastes much of the ingested nitrogen. If the ration included carbohydrate rich foods in addition to the high quality herbage, the animal might be able to utilise more of the nitrogen it is consuming.

In this country little experimental evidence is available on the use of carbohydrate supplements for beef cattle, although several firms produce high carbohydrate cakes with low fibre content, for feeding in conjunction with young succulent grass.

Callow (1962) examined methods of predicting the tissue content of sides of beef carcasses from the result of dissecting various joints, reaching the conclusion that no short cuts were possible and that dissection of the whole side was necessary. An empirical rule, suggested by Professor D. M. S. Watson, that one-third of the live-weight of beef animals is muscular tissue, was found to give a more precise estimate of the muscular tissue in a carcass than the weights of muscular tissue dissected from any individual joint. Such an assumption, that all animals have an equal proportion of muscular tissue per unit of live-weight, would be of no value in differentiating between lean and fat animals when slaughtered at a constant live-weight as is commonly done, for example, at the end of progeny tests.

1. Two groups of 12 Ayrshire heifer calves were reared from birth to 14 weeks on two contrasting systems.

2. The conventionally reared group consumed 19 gal. of milk, 86 gal. of milk substitute and 195 lb. of calf meal (17·0% crude protein in dry matter) in 14 weeks whereas the early-weaned animals consumed 5 gal. of milk, 19 gal. of milk substitute and 259 lb. of early-weaning cubes (22·7% crude protein in dry matter) in the same period and were weaned from milk substitute at 5 weeks old. All the calves had unlimited access to dried grass (12·0% crude protein in dry matter).

3. The mean live-weight gain of the calves on the conventional system was 1·26 lb./day and of the early-weaned animals, 1·20 lb./day. These values were not significantly different.

4. None of the experimental calves had bloat or indigestion and there was only one minor outbreak of scour.

5. At the present day prices of the foods, the early-weaning system was the cheaper system both per day and per pound of live-weight gain.

A dynamic, mechanistic model of lamb metabolism and growth was developed for the purpose of evaluating hypotheses regarding the mechanisms of action of growth promotants. The model relates tissue growth to DNA accretion and protein turn-over. State variables include circulating amino acids, glucose, lipids and acetate; four protein pools (carcass, viscera, other tissues and wool) and storage triacylglycerol are also included. Equations are mainly of the Michaelis-Menten form, allowing for nutrient utilization patterns to be determined by relative tissue affinities for substrates (ko.5), enzymatic capacities (Vmax) and substrate concentrations ([S]). Protein degradation rates are defined as first-order with respect to protein. The model adequately simulated growth from 20 to 40 kg empty body weight. Simulated changes in nutrient input yielded reasonable energy balance response patterns, although theoretical growth efficiencies were greater than those observed in practice. Variations in volatile fatty acid absorption patterns were accommodated well, with predicted nitrogen retention closely approximating experimental observations. The model also responded appropriately to changes in dietary protein level, with body fat varying inversely with amino acid absorption. In summary, the model was found to perform adequately for the purpose of examining mechanisms responsible for alteration of growth and body composition.

This study investigates the myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoform composition in the gluteus medius muscle of the Akhal-Teke horses using SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis). Fifteen horses aged between 1.5 and 23.5 years were used in this study and divided into three age groups: 1.5 to 4 (n = 6), 9 to 13 (n = 5) and 18.5 to 23.5 years (n = 4). The average content of the MyHC I isoform was 11.72 ± 1.07% (variation between individuals: 7.09% to 20.14%). The relative content of the MyHC IIa and IIx isoforms was subsequently 38.20 ± 1.46% (30.73% to 48.78%) and 50.07 ± 1.10% (43.8% to 56.78%) from the total MyHC. The MyHC pattern in the skeletal muscles of the Akhal-Teke horses shows that the muscles of these horses have a high capacity both for endurance and speed.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the impact of selection for greater muscling on whole body insulin responsiveness in cattle, as reflected by greater uptake of glucose in response to constant insulin infusion and greater glucose disappearance following an intravenous glucose tolerance test. This study used 18-month-old steers from an Angus herd visually assessed and selected for divergence in muscling over 15 years. Eleven high-muscled (High), 10 low-muscled (Low) and 3 high-muscled steers, which were heterozygous for a myostatin polymorphism (HighHet), were infused with insulin using the hyperinsulineamic-euglyceamic clamp technique. Insulin was constantly infused at two levels, 0.6 μIU/kg per min and 6.0 μIU/kg per min. Glucose was concurrently infused to maintain euglyceamia and the steady state glucose infusion rate (SSGIR) indicated insulin responsiveness. An intravenous glucose tolerance test was also administered at 200 mg/kg live weight. Sixteen blood samples were collected from each animal between −30 and 130 min relative to the administration of intravenous glucose, plasma glucose and insulin concentration was determined in order to analyse insulin secretion and glucose disappearance. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) was also measured in basal plasma samples. At the low insulin infusion rate of 0.6 mU/kg per min, the SSGIR was 73% higher for the High muscling genotype animals when compared to the Low (P < 0.05). At the high insulin infusion rate of 6.0 mU/kg per min, these differences were proportionately less with the High and the HighHet genotypes having only 27% and 34% higher SSGIR (P < 0.05) than the Low-muscled genotype. The High-muscled cattle also had 30% higher plasma IGF-1 concentrations compared to the Low-muscled cattle. There was no effect of muscling genotype on basal insulin or basal glucose concentrations, glucose disappearance or insulin secretion following an intravenous glucose tolerance test. The increased whole body insulin responsiveness in combination with higher IGF-1 concentrations in the High-muscled steers is likely to initiate a greater level of protein synthesis, which may partially explain the increased muscle accretion in these animals.

Two metabolism trials (experiments 1 and 2) were conducted to examine the effect of the organic S compound, sodium 3-mercapto-1-propane sulfonic acid (MPS) on feed intake, fiber digestibility, rumen fermentation and abundance of cellulolytic rumen microorganisms in cattle fed low S (<0.11%) roughages. Urea was provided in all treatments to compensate for the N deficiency (<0.6%) in the roughages. In experiment 1, steers (333 ± 9.5 kg liveweight) were fed Angleton grass (Dicanthium aristatum) supplemented with S in equivalent amounts as either MPS (6.0 g/day) or sodium sulfate (9.56 g/day). Supplementation of Angelton grass with either sulfate or MPS resulted in an apparent increase in flow of rumen microbial protein from the rumen. Sulfur supplementation did not significantly change whole tract dry matter digestibility or intake, even though sulfate and MPS supplementation was associated with an increase in the relative abundance of the fibrolytic bacteria Fibrobacter succinogenes and anaerobic rumen fungi. Ruminal sulfide levels were significantly higher in the sulfate treatment, which indicated that the bioavailability of the two S atoms in the MPS molecule may be low in the rumen. Based on this observation, experiment 2 was conducted in which twice the amount of S was provided in the form of MPS (8.0 g/day) compared with sodium sulfate (6.6 g/day) to heifers (275 ± 9 kg liveweight) fed rice straw. Supplementation with MPS compared with sulfate in experiment 2 resulted in an increase in concentration of total volatile fatty acids, and ammonia utilization without a change in feed intake or whole tract fiber digestibility even though S and N were above requirement for growing cattle in both these treatment groups. In conclusion, supplementation of an S deficient low-quality roughage diet with either MPS or sodium sulfate, in conjunction with urea N, improved rumen fermentation, which was reflected in an increase in urinary purine excretion. However, MPS appeared to have a greater effect on stimulating short-chain fatty acid production and ammonia utilization when provided at higher concentrations than sulfate. Thus, the metabolism of MPS in the rumen needs to be investigated further in comparison with inorganic forms of S as it may prove to be more effective in stimulating fermentation of roughage diets.

Effects of incorporation of urea and saccharose in diets, on intake and digestion by sheep of a 35-day-old pangola (Digitaria decumbens) hay, have been studied according to a 4 × 4 Latin-square design. Sixteen rams were given four diets: hay (C); hay plus urea (U, 23 g/kg hay); hay plus saccharose (S, 60 g/kg hay), hay plus urea and saccharose (SU). Acid-detergent fibre and crude protein (CP) content of the roughage were 395 and 78 g/kg dry matter (DM) respectively. Intake of hay (g DM per kg live weight0.75), supplemented with urea and sugar (42⋅9), was lower (F < 0.05) than with other diets (47.2, s.e. 1.6). The organic matter (OM) total tract and ruminal digestibility of the diet C, S, U and SU were 0.622, 0.590, 0.615 and 0.587 (s.e. 0.007); 0.361, 0.380, 0.378 and 0.345 (s.e. 0.015) respectively. Effective degradation and nylon bag kinetics of DM degradation were higher with U and SU compared with S or C. Few differences were observed between diets for ruminal concentration of volatile fatty acids. The ruminal ammonia concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) for the diets with urea than without urea (78 v. 215 mg/l). The efficiencies of the microbial synthesis (g nitrogen per kg OM fermented in the rumen) were, 23.6, 22.4, 24.9 and 29.3 (s.e. 1.7) for the diets C, U, S and SU respectively.

Even though additional urea increased nitrogen availability for ruminal bacteria, urea supplementation did not affect significantly intake or digestion of the pangola hay of medium CP content used in this experiment.

Improving feed efficiency in dairy cattle could result in more profitable and environmentally sustainable dairy production through lowering feed costs and emissions from dairy farming. In addition, beef production based on dairy herds generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions per unit of meat output than beef production from suckler cow systems. Different scenarios were used to assess the profitability of adding traits, excluded from the current selection index for Finnish Ayrshire, to the breeding goal for combined dairy and beef production systems. The additional breeding goal traits were growth traits (average daily gain of animals in the fattening and rearing periods), carcass traits (fat covering, fleshiness and dressing percentage), mature live weight (LW) of cows and residual feed intake (RFI) traits. A breeding scheme was modeled for Finnish Ayrshire under the current market situation in Finland using the deterministic simulation software ZPLAN+. With the economic values derived for the current production system, the inclusion of growth and carcass traits, while preventing LW increase generated the highest improvement in the discounted profit of the breeding program (3.7%), followed by the scenario where all additional traits were included simultaneously (5.1%). The use of a selection index that included growth and carcass traits excluding LW, increased the profit (0.8%), but reduced the benefits resulted from breeding for beef traits together with LW. A moderate decrease in the profit of the breeding program was obtained when adding only LW to the breeding goal (−3.1%), whereas, adding only RFI traits to the breeding goal resulted in a minor increase in the profit (1.4%). Including beef traits with LW in the breeding goal showed to be the most potential option to improve the profitability of the combined dairy and beef production systems and would also enable a higher rate of self-sufficiency in beef. When considering feed efficiency related traits, the inclusion of LW traits in the breeding goal that includes growth and carcass traits could be more profitable than the inclusion of RFI, because the marginal costs of measuring LW can be expected to be lower than for RFI and it is readily available for selection. In addition, before RFI can be implemented as a breeding objective, the genetic correlations between RFI and other breeding goal traits estimated for the studied population as well as information on the most suitable indicator traits for RFI are needed to assess more carefully the consequences of selecting for RFI.

Complete chemical analyses of all body components of 20 Large White pigs were carried out. At the average live-weight of 90·3 kg. (empty body weight 86·5 kg.) the total protein content was found to be 12·7 kg. and that of the chemical fat 25·4 kg. The edible parts of the carcass (i.e. lean and separable fat) contained only 58·5% (range 55·2–61·3) of the total protein but as much as 85% of the total chemical fat. Simple and multiple correlations were computed between various carcass characters and protein, chemical fat and energy content. The results indicate that it may be possible to obtain fairly accurate estimates of the chemical composition and energy content of the edible parts of the carcass, of the whole carcass, and of the empty body by methods based on various systems of assessing the carcass quality.

Body temperature and respiratory rate were investigated during the hottest months of the year in five docked and five undocked fattailed Awassi rams, together with the effect of month and docking on these physiological variables.

Month had significant effects on both variables in the two groups. Diurnal variation in rectal temperature was significant in both groups.

Docked rams maintained significantly lower rectal temperatures and respiratory rates than their controls.

An objective measure of conformation is desirable in the study of fatstock nutrition and genetics. Conformation of the beef carcass can be defined as the proportions of joints of different tissue composition, food value and meat quality. While these can be judged by eye and measurement both in the live animal and the carcass, the most accurate and objective measure of conformation would be obtained by weighing joints of known quality. To use for this purpose the butcher’s separation of the carcass into wholesale joints, the London and Home Counties cutting system was applied to forty bullocks from experiments at the Grassland Research Institute in 1955 and 1956.

The combined effects of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) extract supplementation and ammonia treatment of rice straw (Oryza sativa, variety Thaibonnet) on the ruminal digestion of cell wall components were investigated in six continuous culture systems using a randomised complete block design. Data were fitted to second-order polynomial models. Untreated rice straw had higher contents of ash-free cell wall residues (CWR; 763 v. 687 g/kg dry matter (DM)) and non-cellulosic sugars (191 v. 166 g/kg DM) than treated rice straw. Ammoniation preferentially removed xylose, which resulted in a lower xylose-to-arabinose ratio (5.1 v. 5.8). In absence of lucerne supplementation and ammoniation, degradability coefficients were 0.54, 0.46, 0.58, 0.54, 0.42 and 0.60 for cellulose–glucose, xylose, arabinose, galactose, mannose and uronic acids, respectively. Both factors had significant effects on the microbial degradation of structural polysaccharides. With lucerne extract at an optimal level, ammonia treatment increased ash-free cell wall degradation by more than 10%. The degradability coefficients were increased by ammoniation without any significant interaction with lucerne extract, except for glucose, whose degradability was mostly influenced by lucerne extract in a curvilinear way. The comparison of regression coefficients in cell wall and CWR models suggested that ammoniation improved the degradabilities of xylose, galactose and mannose by partly solubilising the corresponding hemicelluloses and by improving the susceptibility of the remaining fraction to microbial attack, whereas it increased the degradability of arabinose only by favouring microbial attack.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a type of pathogenic bacteria that cause diarrhea in piglets through colonizing pig small intestine epithelial cells by their surface fimbriae. Different fimbriae type of ETEC including F4, F18, K99 and F41 have been isolated from diarrheal pigs. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study to map the loci associated with the susceptibility of pigs to ETEC F41 using 39454 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 667 F2 pigs from a White Duroc×Erhualian F2 cross. The most significant SNP (ALGA0022658, P=5.59×10−13) located at 6.95 Mb on chromosome 4. ALGA0022658 was in high linkage disequilibrium (r2>0.5) with surrounding SNPs that span a 1.21 Mb interval. Within this 1.21 Mb region, we investigated ZFAT as a positional candidate gene. We re-sequenced cDNA of ZFAT in four pigs with different susceptibility phenotypes, and identified seven coding variants. We genotyped these seven variants in 287 unrelated pigs from 15 diverse breeds that were measured with ETEC F41 susceptibility phenotype. Five variants showed nominal significant association (P<0.05) with ETEC F41 susceptibility phenotype in International commercial pigs. This study provided refined region associated with susceptibility of pigs to ETEC F41 than that reported previously. Further works are needed to uncover the underlying causal mutation(s).

This study aimed to investigate whether pre- and early postnatal experiences of rearing hens contribute to the ability to cope with infectious challenges at an older age. In a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, 352 Lohmann Brown chicks were exposed to either suboptimal or optimized incubation plus hatch conditions, and to cage or enriched rearing from week 0 to 7 of age. After week 7 all rearing conditions were similar until the end of the experiment. The development of adaptive capacity to infectious challenges was investigated by introducing an Eimeria and Infectious Bronchitis (IB) infection on day 53 and day 92, respectively. BW gain and feed intake during the infections, duodenal lesions and amount of positive stained CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells and macrophages at day 4 and day 7 after Eimeria infection, as well as the IB antibody titer throughout the experimental period were determined. The results showed a significant interaction between incubation plus hatch and rearing environment. Optimized incubation plus hatch conditions followed by an enriched rearing environment resulted in the least weight loss (P < 0.05) and the highest feed intake (P < 0.01) from day 3 to day 7 after the Eimeria infection (day 56 to 60 of age), compared with all other treatments. In addition, the optimized × enriched chicks had the highest BW gain from day 7 to day 14 after IB infection (day 99 to 106 of age), compared with chicks housed in a cage environment (P < 0.01). Besides the interaction, optimized incubation plus hatch alone resulted in reduced macrophage numbers in the duodenal tissue at day 4 after Eimeria infection, compared with suboptimal incubation plus hatch, whereas the enriched rearing environment stimulated the recovery of intestinal damage caused by Eimeria (P < 0.05) and reduced the production of specific antibodies after IB infection (P < 0.05), compared with the cage environment. In conclusion, this study shows that early life experiences can indeed affect the capacity of rearing hens to cope with an Eimeria and IB infection at an older age, in which performance of chicks is best maintained after optimized incubation plus hatch followed by enriched rearing. This suggests that the development of adaptive capacity to infectious challenges can be influenced with management during a short period in pre- or early postnatal life, but that effects last for a considerable time after cessation of the specific management.
