Choice feeding could be more widely applied with pigs if the initial variability between individuals in diet selection was overcome and there was a better understanding of the factors affecting the learning process in groups. In six replicates, two groups of four pigs (live weight 35·5±0·95 kg) were formed containing either an individual trained to select between two foods or an untrained control animal. The groups were offered food L (130 g crude protein (CP) and 5·6 g lysine per kg) and food H (260 g CP and 15·5 g lysine per kg) in two troughs as a choice for a period of 14 days. Food intake was measured twice daily for the first 3 days and then daily. The pigs were weighed three times per week and feeding behaviour was video recorded on the 1st and 3rd days of grouping. There was no effect of the trained pig on the performance of the group over the 2-week period (daily live-weight gain: 1·19 kg and 1·21 kg for the pigs in control or trained groups; s.e.d. 0·057). Within the first 8-h period of food recording pigs in groups with a trained pig selected a diet similar to that of the trained pig, whereas those with a control pig showed initial variation in selection before adopting a pattern in favour of one food, usually after about 3 days. In the first 24 h the pattern of visits to the troughs by the naïve pigs followed that of the trained pig whereas the pigs in the control groups initially visited the troughs at random. After 3 days the difference between the groups was small and largely non-significant. In five of the six replicates the groups selected a diet comprising 0·65H: 0·35L, which was similar to that expected from their lysine requirements. The two groups in the other replicate selected more of food L and this and the other findings are discussed in relation to the influence of social learning, previous nutritional experience and food composition on diet selection by pigs.

Multiparous cows were assigned before calving to three calving to first insemination intervals. Records of cows conceiving at first or second insemination, were used to construct a model of the lactation curve which incorporated peak production and the effect of progressing pregnancy. The model was used to simulate milk yield during a 4-year period for three production levels and five calving intervals. The model separated the descending part of the lactation curve into a linearly and an exponentially declining component, with the latter becoming distinct at about 20 weeks after conception. Peak yield was negatively correlated with the slope of the linear decline. Within a simulated 4-year period, cumulative milk yields at fixed time periods after calving depended upon the period chosen and the calving-to-conception interval of the cow. Late conceptions resulted in higher cumulative yields at the end of the 1st year, and in lower yields at the 2nd year end, with respect to early conceptions. Smaller differences were found between the intermediate calving intervals. During the 3rd and 4th years the early conceptions had a distinct advantage. Different rates of the linear decline, obtained for the different production levels, changed the magnitude of the yield differences between the calving intervals but not their relative ranking. The model presented offers a means for the suitable choice of the calving cycle according to the length of the period for which a cow is expected to remain in the herd.

The effects of fertilization (100 kg nitrogen plus 10kg phosphorus per ha per year) of Cymbopogon-Themeda veld on certain chemical components in vitro dry-matter digestibility (IVDMD), intake by either lactating cows or steers as well as daily gain of pre-weaned calves or steers, were determined in the summer rainfall area of the Republic of South Africa.

The nutritive value of fertilized veld herbage was, in terms of crude protein and acid-detergent fibre content, IVDMD and herbage intake, superior to that of unfertilized veld. Species, classified as palatable according to the literature, were more abundant on the fertilized veld than on the unfertilized veld. In spite of the fact that the stocking rate on the fertilized veld was double that of the unfertilized veld, the average daily gain (ADG) of steers on the former was higher than that of steers on the latter. There was no significant difference in the ADG of the pre-weaned calves, whose dams grazed either fertilized or unfertilized veld. It was calculated that the fertilization of veld for growing steers can (under the conditions that prevailed) be a financially viable proposition if the beef price per kg live weight amounts to at least 0·65% of the cost of fertilization per ha.

Data from 1447 pigs from 438 litters were used to estimate heritability, breeding and mating system differences and heterosis of atrophic rhinitis. Yorkshire, Landrace and Lacombe breeds and their crosses were represented. Rhinitis was measured by necropsic examination of the degree of degeneration of the nasal turbinates. Two traits were considered: rhinitis incidence, based on whether or not pigs showed any nasal turbinate degeneration; and rhinitis score, which ranged from zero to four, based on the percentage of nasal turbinate degeneration exhibited. Heritabilities of rhinitis incidence and score were 0·12±0·09 and 0·03±0·02, respectively. Mating system differences were significant but differences between crosses within mating system were not. Estimates of heterosis of two-breed, backcross and three-breed cross pigs over purebreds were respectively, 1·1, 3·4 and 22·1% for rhinitis incidence and 10·1, 13·2 and 28·5% for rhinitis score.

The effect of melatonin implants administered to cashmere goats in the winter, on plasma prolactin, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) concentrations and the timing of the spring moult, was studied with the objective of identifying a method of manipulating the timing of the spring moult and increasing fibre harvesting efficiency. The effect of similar melatonin implants on prolactin concentration when administered in the increasing daylength of spring, was also measured.

In the first experiment, using 20 juvenile and 20 adult female cashmere goats, half the animals of each group received continuous release implants of melatonin (18 mg) on 11 December, 1 February and 1 April. In the adult goats the treatment significantly advanced by 7 weeks the time at which peak plasma prolactin concentrations were attained (P < 0·001) and advanced the onset (P < 0·001) of the peak. The treatment also resulted in an advance of the spring moult of cashmere in the adult goats (P < 0·01) and in an earlier initiation (P < 0·01) of the growth of both guard hair and cashmere as judged by histological examination of primary and secondary hair follicles. In the juvenile goats there were no significant effects of melatonin administration on plasma prolactin concentrations, the timing of the moult, or on any of the histological measurements compared with the controls. There were no significant effects on live weight or circulating concentrations of T3 and T4 in either age group. In the second experiment, the administration of one melatonin implant (18 mg) to three adult goats on 1 April caused a significant reduction in plasma prolactin concentrations (P < 0·05) over a period of 3 weeks compared with concentrations observed in four untreated goats.

It is concluded that treatment with melatonin implants is effective in modifying the timing of the seasonal cycle in prolactin secretion in adult cashmere goats and causing corresponding changes in hair follicle activity. However, since the treatment initiated in December caused an advance rather than a delay in the normal spring rise in plasma prolactin concentrations, it is evident that the repeated melatonin implant protocol used in this experiment cannot be used to delay the onset of the spring moult and thus facilitate the harvesting of cashmere.

Carcass measurements made on 1,463 Large White pigs from 88 inbred lines, at various degrees of inbreeding, have been analysed.

Partial regression coefficients calculated within lines showed that each 10% increase in inbreeding coefficient significantly increased carcass weight by 0·46 lb., decreased mid-back fat thickness by 0·37 mm. and streak thickness by 0·36 mm.

Partial regression coefficients calculated on all the material, or on line means showed, however, that the most highly inbred pigs tended to be shorter and fatter than average. Possible explanations of this finding are discussed and it is suggested that under the selection procedure adopted for litter size and weaning, weight favours the survival of these less desirable lines.

Food intake was individually measured for Large White control (C) and 10th generation index-selected (S) pigs fed twice daily to appetite on a fixed time trial. Thirty-nine C and 38 S boars were slaughtered, their carcasses dissected and whole empty bodies minced and chemically analysed after an 84-day trial starting at 28·6 ± 0·30 kg live weight. S boars ate proportionately 0·08 less than C boars in the first 42 days of the trial (79 v. 86 kg, P < 0·01), but S and C boars ate similar amounts (114 v. 117 kg, NS) in the last 42 days. S boars grew 0-04 faster than C boars (918 v. 886 g per day, NS), and had 0·09 better food conversion efficiency (0·404 v. 0·369 gain per kg food, P < 0·001). S boars contained more water than C boars (53·5 v. 48·9 kg, P < 0·001), more protein (15-4 v. 14-2 kg, P < 0·01), less lipid (20·8 v. 25·1 kg, P < 0·001), less gross energy (1 199 v. 1 357 MJ, P < 0·01) but a similar amount of ash. S carcasses had 3 kg more lean (36·5 v. 33·5 kg, P < 0·001) and more bone than C carcasses (7·14 v. 6·71 kg, P < 0·05), but contained 3 kg less total fat (19·6 v. 22·6 kg, P < 0·01). The lean tissue growth rate of S boars was 327 g per day which was 31 g per day faster than for C boars (P < 0·001). Appetite reduction in S boars enhanced fatness differences between the lines.

Sugar-beet pulp as normally produced in Great Britain contains about 400 g molasses per kg dry matter (DM). It has been demonstrated that either a reduction in the amount or even the full removal of the molasses did not affect the yield or composition of the milk of cows (e.g. Ronning and Bath, 1962; Hemingway, Parkins and Fraser, 1986). The dried, shredded pulp without molasses was, however, generally less palatable.

Reaction to the muscle relaxant succinylcholine was investigated as a possible method of distinguishing the heterozygote from the normal homozygote at the halothane locus. Totals of 54 assumed heterozygotes and 67 assumed homozygotes received intravenous succinylcholine during halothane anaesthesia at 6 to 10 weeks of age. Three separate measures of the duration and severity of the muscular reaction to succinylcholine were all significantly increased in heterozygotes compared with homozygotes. The genotypic difference for one of the three reaction traits was significantly influenced by the day of testing. Due to overlapping distributions for the two genotypes, succinylcholine reactions did not offer a precise method of identifying individual heterozygotes. Although test mating to recessive homozygotes would still be required to be certain of eliminating the halothane gene, the gene frequency among prosepective parents for test mating could be substantially reduced by succinylcholine screening. Due to the expertise and time required, succinylcholine testing would probably only be worthwhile for the production of specialized homozygous lines at nucleus level.

Sixty-six Landrace × (Landrace × Large White) gilts were allocated at 70 days of age to one of three rearing treatments of housing with gilts, contemporary castrated males or contemporary intact males. Half the experiment was completed in winter and half in spring. At 159 days of age all gilts were subjected to a change of pen and, from 160 days of age, daily exposure to mature vasectomized boars. The rearing treatments had a small but significant effect on the time interval from boar exposure to puberty, with gilts housed with gilts averaging 8·9 days to puberty compared with 7·1 days and 7·4 days for gilts housed with castrates and boars, respectively (p < 0·05). In addition, there was a seasonal effect on the time interval to puberty. Gilts receiving mature boar exposure during the winter months had a longer interval to puberty than gilts exposed to boars during the spring (8·8 days v. 6·9 days; P < 0·01). These results indicated no habituation effects of gilts housed with contemporary males but, rather, the possibility of a slightly earlier induction of puberty.

The effect of tail docking on metabolizable energy requirements and carcass characteristics was studied using 80 weaned entire Awassi male lambs. Docking was performed within 3 days of birth and lambs were weaned at 90 days old. Docked and undocked lambs were randomly allocated to four groups, individually penned and offered different amounts of a pelleted concentrate diet. The pelleted diet was estimated to contain 11·8 MJ of metabolizable energy (ME) and 182 g of crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM). Lambs on the high levels of intake were slaughtered at a target weight of approximately 45 kg. Other lambs were maintained on the diet for 149 days before being slaughtered. The right sides of all carcasses were cut into standardized commercial cuts then dissected into muscle, fat and bone. The soft tissue was pooled and analysed for DM, C P, ash and fat. Prediction of live-weight gain (LWG) and empty body gain for a given ME intake (MEI) was made using the growth and MEI data. MEI was expressed as MJ per kg metabolic body weight (M 0·75) per day. Tail docking had no effect (P > 0·05) on lamb growth from birth to weaning. During the post-weaning growth period, LWG and empty body gain were significantly higher (P < 0·05) for undocked lambs than docked lambs, at feeding levels between 0·31 and 0·52 MJ/kg M 0·75 per day and similar (P > 0·05) at high levels of intakes (between 0·74 and 1·1 MJ/ kg M 0·75 per day). Hot and cold carcass weights were similar (P > 0·05) for the two groups. Differences in empty body weight and fleece-free empty body weight were significant (P < 0·05) only for the 0·443 to 0·522 MJ/kg M 0·75 per day level of ME intake. Predicted ME requirements were higher for docked lambs for an estimated LWG between 0 and 100 g/day and lower for higher LWG (125 to 225 g/day). Docking had no effect (P > 0·05) on food conversion efficiency (FCE). Carcasses from docked lambs had significantly lower (P < 0·001) internal plus tail fat. Pooled soft tissue excluding tail fat, for the undocked lambs contained significantly more (P < 0·01) protein, less (P < 0·001) fat, higher (P < 0·01) moisture and similar (P > 0·05) ash content.

The economic value of the goat depends upon its growth and reproductive and productive efficiency. The growth determines the meat producing ability up to a marketable age i.e. 6 months. Rapid growth during the pre-weaning period minimizes the cost of rearing, thus providing more profit to the farmer. The present investigation reports the effect of genetic groups, years and season of birth, sex of kid, type of birth and dam's weight at kidding on pre-weaning growth traits, and the extent of the genetic variability and covariability among these traits.

The pattern of growth and carcass composition of indigenous Ethiopian fat-tailed Menz and Horro lambs were assessed through serial slaughter and carcass dissection of 147 lambs at five different growth phases. The GLM procedure of Statistical Analysis Systems Institute and allometric growth equations were used to assess the effects of various factors and differential growth of carcass components, respectively. Results showed that the growth and carcass composition of Menz and Horro lambs was significantly (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001) affected by the genotype, growth phase and season of birth of lambs. The effects of growth phase clearly showed that slower growth of the body and of carcass components was observed during the third phase (i.e. after weaning). Although there was an effect on fat to lean ratios (P < 0.05), growth phase had no significant effect on dressing out proportion, and lean to bone ratios. A significant influence of genotype (P < 0.001) and sex (P < 0.05) on lean to bone ratios indicated that the Horro sheep and ram lambs had a much more developed and heavier skeleton than the Menz sheep and ewe lambs. Higher pre-slaughter, hot carcass, lean and bone and fat weights of May/June born lambs revealed significant advantages of wet season lambing for fast growth and improved carcass composition. The log/log regression of weights of dissectible carcass components on hot carcass and empty body weight showed that the differential growth of bone was declining and that of lean was isometric relative to the growth of empty body weight. For carcass fat, the allometric growth coefficients (b) of 1.5 and 1.8 for Menz and Horro sheep, respectively indicated that fat is a late maturing body component. Moreover the growth of carcass fat relative to empty body weight in the Menz and Horro sheep is slower than that reported for tropical sheep breeds.

Dietary effects on the host are mediated via modulation of the intestinal mucosal responses. The present study investigated the effect of an enzymatically modified starch (EMS) product on the mucosal expression of genes related to starch digestion, sugar and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) absorption and incretins in the jejunum and cecum in growing pigs. Moreover, the impact of the EMS on hepatic expression of genes related to glucose and lipid metabolism, and postprandial serum metabolites were assessed. Barrows (n=12/diet; initial BW 29 kg) were individually fed three times daily with free access to a diet containing either EMS or waxy corn starch as control (CON) for 10 days. The enzymatic modification led to twice as many α-1,6-glycosidic bonds (~8%) in the amylopectin fraction in the EMS in comparison with the non-modified native waxy corn starch (4% α-1,6-glycosidic bonds). Linear discriminant analysis revealed distinct clustering of mucosal gene expression for EMS and CON diets in jejunum. Compared with the CON diet, the EMS intake up-regulated jejunal expression of sodium-coupled monocarboxylate transporter (SMCT), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) and gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) (P<0.05) and intestinal alkaline phosphatase (ALPI) (P=0.08), which may be related to greater luminal SCFA availability, whereas cecal gene expression was unaffected by diet. Hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) expression tended (P=0.07) to be down-regulated in pigs fed the EMS diet compared with pigs fed the CON diet, which may explain the trend (P=0.08) of 30% decrease in serum triglycerides in pigs fed the EMS diet. Furthermore, pigs fed the EMS diet had a 50% higher (P=0.03) serum urea concentration than pigs fed the CON diet potentially indicating an increased use of glucogenic amino acids for energy acquisition in these pigs. Present findings suggested the jejunum as the target site to influence the intestinal epithelium and altered lipid and carbohydrate metabolism by EMS feeding.

The accuracy and precision of the National Research Council (NRC), Gesellschaft für Ernährungsphysiologie (GfE) and Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) systems for predicting the digestible energy (DE) value of hays were determined from the results of 15 digestibility trials with natural grassland hays and 9 digestibility trials with lucerne hays that all met strict experimental and a tight corpus of methods. The hays were harvested in the temperate zone. They covered broad ranges of chemical composition and DE value. The INRA system was more accurate than the other two systems, with the bias between the predicted and measured DE values of natural grassland and lucerne hays averaging −0.11 and −0.04 MJ/kg DM with the INRA system, 0.34 and −0.70 MJ/kg DM with the NRC system and −0.50 and −1.69 MJ/kg DM with the GfE system (P < 0.05). However, the precision of the three systems was similar; the standard error of prediction corrected by bias was not significantly different (P > 0.05). The GfE system underestimated the DE value of hays, especially of lucerne hays. The differences between the predicted and measured DE values resulted mainly from the errors in the prediction of organic matter digestibility and energy digestibility for both natural grassland and lucerne hays. Discrimination according to botanical family (grassland v. lucerne) can help improve the prediction of the DE value of hays. The choice of appropriate predictive variables is discussed in the light of differences in chemical composition and digestibility of the various cell wall components of grassland and lucerne hays. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) may thus be preferable to ADF in the prediction equation of the DE value of lucerne hays, whereas ADF and NDF may both be relevant for natural grassland hays.

Leg weakness (LW) issues are a great concern for pig breeding industry. And it also has a serious impact on animal welfare. To dissect the genetic architecture of limb-and-hoof firmness in commercial pigs, a genome-wide association study was conducted on bone mineral density (BMD) in three sow populations, including Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire. The BMD data were obtained by ultrasound technology from 812 pigs (including Duroc 115, Landrace 243 and Yorkshire 454). In addition, all pigs were genotyped using genome-by-sequencing and a total of 224 162 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were obtained. After quality control, 218 141 SNPs were used for subsequent genome-wide association analysis. Nine significant associations were identified on chromosomes 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 18 that passed Bonferroni correction threshold of 0.05/(total SNP numbers). The most significant locus that associated with BMD (P value = 1.92e−14) was detected at approximately 41.7 Mb on SSC6 (SSC stands for Sus scrofa chromosome). CUL7, PTK7, SRF, VEGFA, RHEB, PRKAR1A and TPO that are located near the lead SNP of significant loci were highlighted as functionally plausible candidate genes for sow limb-and-hoof firmness. Moreover, we also applied a new method to measure the BMD data of pigs by ultrasound technology. The results provide an insight into the genetic architecture of LW and can also help to improve animal welfare in pigs.

This study investigated the effects of various stunning methods on the quality of French ‘foie gras’ in ducks and geese. The ducks (n = 30 per group) were stunned with one of the following techniques: electrical stunning in a water bath (50 Hz AC, 130 mA, 4 s), head-only electrical stunning (50 Hz AC, 600 mA, 4 s), mechanical stunning (captive bolt) and controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS: phase 1, CO2 (40%)–O2 (30%)–N2 (30%), for 2 min followed by phase 2, CO2 >85% in air, for 2 min). The same methods (except head-only stunning which was not applied) were used in geese (n = 40 per group). The weight of the liver at slaughter was not affected by the stunning techniques, neither was its colour (L*, a*, b* coordinates), despite the differences in bleeding rate between the stunning treatments. The loss of fat during the cooking of canned fatty liver did not depend upon stunning treatment. Some appearance defects of raw fatty livers were significantly affected by the treatment: mechanical and head-only stunning induced higher incidence of petechial haemorrhages in duck liver, whereas in geese, incidence of superficial haemorrhages was significantly higher after CAS and water-bath stunning. The calculation of an overall score based on the incidence and severity of the different appearance defects observed in the present experiment showed that CAS was associated with the least favourable position in ducks as well as in geese, compared to the other treatments. The commercial grading of ducks and geese fatty livers, carried out by an expert from the industry, clearly showed the detrimental effect of CAS on the commercial value of raw livers. CAS, under the conditions applied in the present work cannot be recommended, because of its drastic effect on liver quality. The underlying mechanisms deserve further investigations.

Considering the additional market value of pasture meat, many authentication methods were developed to discriminate it from meat produced in conventional systems. The visible reflectance spectroscopy technique has proved its efficiency under European conditions and breeds. The present study tested the reliability of this method to discriminate between pasture-fed (P) and stall-fed (S) lambs under North African conditions and investigated the effect of feeding system (FS) (P v. S) and breed (Barbarine; Queue Fine de l’Ouest; and Noire de Thibar) on weight and colour of perirenal, subcutaneous and caudal fat. A total of 18 P and 18 S lambs were used with 6 P and 6 S lambs for each breed. The colour and the reflectance spectrum of different fat tissues were measured. The FS affected weights of all fat tissues and all colour parameters of perirenal and subcutaneous fat (P ≤ 0.01); it almost affected redness and yellowness of caudal fat (P ≤ 0.05; P ≤ 0.01). In all adipose tissues, lightness was higher and both redness and yellowness were lower for S lambs than P lambs. The breed affected weight, lightness and redness of perirenal fat and weight and redness of subcutaneous fat with significant interaction with FS for subcutaneous fat data. To discriminate P lambs from S lambs, the reflectance spectrum of perirenal, subcutaneous and caudal fat at wavelengths between 450 and 510 nm (Method 1, M1) or at wavelengths between 400 and 700 nm using partial least squares discriminative analysis as a classification method (Method 2, M2) were used. M2 yielded to a higher proportion of correctly classified lambs compared with M1 (P = 0.001). The proportion of correctly classified lambs using M2 was 76.4, 75.0 and 80.0% for perirenal, subcutaneous and caudal fat for P lambs and 83.3, 76.4 and 100.0% for S lambs. Despite lower reliability in comparisons to European researches, this study confirmed the efficiency of visible reflectance spectroscopy technique applied on perirenal fat in feeding systems authentication under North African conditions and spotted the caudal fat as a new support for better classification of fat-tailed breeds.

1. Pellets of Cr2O3-paper were administered to sheep to reveal the excretion pattern of Cr2O3 in the faeces.

2. Two sheep fed on long hay and pelleted hay for each of two 28-day periods were given a Cr2O3-paper pellet daily at 9 00 hrs. during the 15th to the 24th day inclusive in each period.

3. Total faeces were collected at hourly intervals during the 15th to the 28th day. Dry weight and concentration of Cr2O3 of each fraction was determined.

4. A balance between input and output of Cr2O3 and a minimal standard J deviation of the concentration of Cr2O3 in the faeces between hourly collections was reached in 3 days with long hay and in 2 days when the hay was given as pellets.

5. The decline in the concentration of Cr2O3 in the faeces started the day after the administration of pellets was discontinued.

6. Grinding and pelleting of the hay resulted in a doubling of the standard deviations of the concentration of Cr2O3 in the hourly faeces collections during the period of input-output equilibrium.

7. A pattern of a diurnal cyclic trend was apparent in the concentration of Cr2O3 in the hourly faeces collections, but it varied between animals and between diets.

8. Pellets of Cr2O3-paper are suggested to facilitate the administration of Cr2O3 to ruminants.

9. The effect of sampling frequency and animal replication on estimation accuracy is discussed.

The objective of this study was to determine whether rabbits fed in a restricted regimen (75%) showed increased competition for feeding, drinking and use of specific areas of the cages as compared with those provided feed ad libitum. This evaluation was carried out by measuring their space utilisation in the cage, the incidence of agonistic behaviour and rates of mortality. In total, 504 rabbits between 31 and 66 days of age were used in this study. A total of 200 heavy-weight rabbits and 56 light-weight rabbits were randomly housed in 32 cages, each cage containing eight rabbits: 25 cages housing heavy rabbits and seven cages housing the light-weight ones. They were all fed ad libitum (AD). In addition, a total of 208 heavy-weight rabbits and 40 light-weight rabbits were randomly housed in 31 cages, each of them containing eight rabbits: 26 cages housing heavy weight rabbits and five cages housing light-weight ones. They were all fed a restricted diet (R) regimen. The restriction was calculated to be 75% of the feed consumed by the AD group. The total space available in the cage was 3252 cm2, with a stocking density of 24.6 animals/m2. Animals between 32 and 60 days of age from 20 different cages were observed nine times per week (morning or afternoon) by means of scan and focal sampling by one observer. During each period, cages were assessed for 5 min, registering every minute the position of all the animals in relation to Area A (feeder), Area B (central part) or Area C (back and drinker area). The incidence of agonistic behaviour such as displacement, biting and jumping on each other was also assessed. Performance variables such as daily gain and feed conversion ratio, in addition to general health status and mortality rates, were recorded for all rabbits. When the rabbits were under restricted feeding, the competition for feed and drink increased with clear signs of agonistic behaviour such as biting, displacement and animals jumping on top of each other. Although this competition was maintained during the entire growing period, the BW homogeneity between animals in the same cage was similar in both cases, suggesting that all animals could consume similar quantities of feed. The possible advantages of a restricted diet, such as better feed conversion ratio, were observed in this study only in the last few weeks of the growing period.
