The study was carried out on 42 breeder couples (42 males and 42 females) of European brown hare (Lepus europaeus), divided into three groups fed three different experimental diets (14 couples/treatment). Two diets were supplemented with n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs; 2% of linseed oil and soybean oil, respectively) and were compared with a control diet supplemented with a monounsaturated fatty acids (2% of olive oil). During the experimental period (from 15 April to 30 September), the following parameters were recorded: days from the beginning of trial to the first parturition, parturition interval, number of parturitions, number of leverets born (alive and dead), dead during suckling, the total number of leverets weaned and feed intake per cage (of males, females and leverets until weaning). Feed intake was not influenced by treatments. In hares fed n-3 and n-6 diets, the days from the beginning of the trial to the first parturition and the parturition interval were similar and were lower compared with control group (63.1 v. 70.6 days, and 37.8 v. 40.9 days, respectively; P < 0.05). Hares from n-6 group had a higher (P < 0.05) number of parturitions per cage during the experimental period than the n-3 and control group that showed a similar value (3.00 v. 2.36, respectively). The total number of leverets born per cage and parturition in n-6 and n-3 groups increased with respect to those fed control diet (P < 0.05). The leverets’ mortality rate at birth was higher in n-6 than in n-3 and control group (3.50 v. 2.17, respectively; P < 0.05). In control group, leverets’ mortality rate during suckling was lower with respect to n-3 (P < 0.05) and n-6 (P < 0.05), showing the highest value for the latter (P < 0.05). In spite of this higher mortality, the number of leverets weaned per cage and parturition was higher (P < 0.05) in n-6 compared with n-3 group, being the latter higher than the control group (3.12, 2.79 and 2.43, respectively). Our results show that the dietary PUFAs, particularly n-6 supplementation, have a positive influence on the reproductive performances of the European brown hare.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of stage of lactation on the concentration of polyamines (spermine, spermidine, and putrescine) in sow colostrum and milk. Ten, third parity sows (Landrace×Yorkshire) were sampled throughout a 28-day lactation. Litter size for all sows was standardized at 10 sucking piglets immediately after farrowing. Colostrum collection began at the birth of the first piglet (0 h), and colostrum was subsequently collected 6, 12, 18, and 24 h after farrowing. Sow milk was sampled on days 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24 and 28 of lactation. Spermine concentration in sow colostrum was relatively constant for the first 12 h after farrowing and then rapidly increased to 10·26 μmol/l 24 h after farrowing (linear and quadratic effect; P<0·01). In contrast, the concentrations of spermidine and putrescine showed little change during the first 24 h with spermidine concentration in colostrum ranging from 3·76 to 4·54 μmol/l, and putrescine concentration ranging from 1·15 to 1·52 μmol/l. The highest concentration of spermine in sow milk was 18·82 μmol/l, observed on day 7, with levels gradually declining to 4·28 μmol/l by day 28 of lactation (linear and quadratic effect; P<0·01). In contrast, the concentration of spermidine increased during lactation ranging from a low of 4·32 μmol/l on day 7 to a high of 9·01 μmol/l on day 28 of lactation (linear effect P<0·01; quadratic effect P=0·03). Putrescine concentration ranged from 1·53 μmol/l on day 3 to 1·84 μmol/l on day 28 (linear effect P=0·07; quadratic effect P>0·05). The results of this study show sow colostrum and milk provide polyamines for sucking piglets before weaning, which could potentially modulate intestinal maturation.

Post-weaning growth, dry-matter intake, carcass characteristics, chemical composition of the 9th to 11th rib section and food conversion efficiency were evaluated for Simmental bulls (15) and heifers (18) and Hereford bulls (17) and heifers (14) from approx. 240 days of age to 470 days of age. Within each breed × sex sub-class, animals were assigned to one of three energy intake levels: (1) ad libitum, (2) 795 kJ metabolizable energy (ME) per kg0·75 per day and (3) 544 kj ME per kg0·75 per day.

Simmentals tended to exhibit higher post-weaning growth rate and consumed more dry matter than Herefords. At ad libitum intakes, efficiency estimates (gain/food) were greater initially but decreased more rapidly for Herefords than for Simmentals. No differences were observed in efficiency estimates between Herefords and Simmentals fed at 795 kJ ME per kg0·75 per day and both breeds fed at this level improved in efficiency as time on test increased.

Bulls tended to have greater growth rate, and consume more dry matter than heifers. At ad libitum food intake, bulls were more efficient than heifers and the decrease in efficiency of the two sexes was parallel. Heifers fed at 795 kJ ME per kg0·75 per day had a constant efficiency throughout the test while bulls improved in efficiency.

Three wilted silages (dry matter concentration of approximately 300 g/kg) were prepared from early-bloom lucerne which received no additive (MG-0), or was treated with a mixture of carboxylic salts (Maxgrass) at either 4 (MG-4) or 8 (MG-8) l/t fresh crop. Silages were stored in tower silos. Resulting silages were offered ad libitum to growing Holstein steers without supplementation. Untreated silage (MG-0) exhibited an extensive, predominantly lactic acid fermentation. The nitrogen (N) fraction was highly soluble, relative to the crop at ensiling. Silage fermentation and protein solublization were restricted by Maxgrass application. Maxgrass application reduced aerobic stability of silage removed from the upper third of silos but not of silage from the lower portion of silos. Apparent digestibility showed a quadratic response to level of Maxgrass application (P < 0·05). Voluntary intake was not affected by Maxgrass addition (P > 0·005) but intake of all silages was high (30 g/kg live weight (LW)). There was a positive linear response (P < 0·05) in LW gain to Maxgrass application with gains of 0·74, 0·86 and 0·87 kg/day being achieved in steers given MG-0, MG-4 and MG-8 silages, respectively. Degradability of silage N determined in nylon bags in situ was unaffected by Maxgrass application. However, the immediately degradable N fraction was reduced by Maxgrass application (linear effect, P < 0·001; quadratic effect, P < 0·05). Benefits in animal performance due to Maxgrass application were attributed to improved N composition while restricted carbohydrate fermentation during ensiling was considered to be of secondary importance.

In a multibreed experiment, 292 heifers from 25 British cattle breeds were fed a standard pelleted diet ad libitum from 12 to 72 weeks of age. Inter-age correlations involving body weight, weight gain, average daily food intake and cumulated food intake were measured across traits at the same age and within and across traits at ages separated by an interval of 12, 24, 36 and 48 weeks. Within-breed correlations were phenotypic but between-breed correlations were genetic.

The between-breed inter-age correlations involving body weight, cumulated intake and average daily intake were all very high (range 104 to 0·94) and declined only gradually as the intervening age interval increased from 12 to 48 weeks. Inter-age correlations involving weight gain were lower but usually above 0·7. The within-breed correlations by contrast were invariably lower and declined much more rapidly as the age interval increased. Although the between-breed and within-breed correlations differed in magnitude there was a similarity in their overall pattern.

For breed samples, body weight at young ages provided very accurate rankings at later ages for body weight, cumulated intake and average daily intake. Body weight was almost as reliable as food intake itself for predicting cumulated intake.

For individuals within breeds predicted rankings at later ages were not very accurate for body weight or cumulated intake and they became worse as the age interval increased. Neither weight gain nor average daily intake could be predicted with any reliability.

Inter-age correlations while dependant on age interval did not depend on age itself in the case of body weight and cumulated intake, although they were age-dependant for weight gain and to a lesser extent for average daily intake. Reciprocal correlations between body weight and cumulated intake were very symmetrical whereas those involving weight gain and daily intake were asymmetrical.

Fleece and skin samples were taken at intervals from birth to 86 days from Scottish Blackface lambs born into one line selected for hairiness, another for fineness and an unselected control line. The birthcoats in the Hairy line were longer than those in the Fine line, and had a predominance of Plateauo and Pi fibre type arrays, whereas P2 and P3 arrays predominated in the Fine line. The Hairy group had significantly more halo hairs and hairy-tip curly-tip fibres, but significantly fewer histerotrichs.

Most secondary follicles had fibres by 56 days, and development appeared to be faster in the Control than in the other two groups. The Hairy and Control groups had consistently high percentages of primary medullation, whereas the Fine group had a peak at 14 days. The Fine group had consistently low secondary medullation, whereas it increased in the Hairy and Control lambs, apart from a set-back at 28 days.

Up to 56 days the Fine group had no fibre shedding in the skin, and the Hairy group had most, although the incidence in any sample was less than 2%. There was more follicle inactivity at 86 days, and the Fine group then had most.

Ewe's colostrum, dried milk, ewe's blood, cow's blood and cow's serum, given to a total of 56 newborn lambs, had various effects on serum immunoglobulin concentrations, the gut closure process and early growth rate.

Cow's colostrum and serum proved to be good alternative sources of immunoglobulin for rearing lambs. Cow's and ewe's blood had adverse effects on immunoglobulin absorption, speeding up the closure process. This process was only slightly affected when lambs were fed immunoglobulin-free powdered milk.

Lambs survived with concentrations of serum immunoglobulin as low as 5 zinc sulphate turbidity units. Similar and satisfactory mean early growth rates were observed for lambs given ovine and bovine colostrum and bovine serum, whilst those given ovine and bovine whole blood had relatively low early weight gains. Those receiving powdered milk substitute followed by ewe colostrum at 8 h post partumshowed intermediate rates of growth.

The present study investigated the intensity of the anoestrous period in 36 Hampshire and Suffolk ewes as influenced by the photoperiod and the presence of the ram. The study began on 4 April and terminated on 11 June. Ewes kept under natural light in the absence of the ram (Group I) exhibited a limited amount of ovarian activity as determined by cervical smear. Ewes kept under natural light, but in the presence of a ram (Group II) showed an increased amount of cycling (P < 0·05) when compared to that in Group I. Two ewes from Group II mated during the so-called anoestrous period and subse-quently lambed. Ten of 12 ewes, subjected to a decreased photoperiod (Group HI), increased ovarian activity within a few days of light reduction. Five ewes in this group lambed.

In two separate experiments pigs were weaned at 14 or 28 days and heat production was determined in an open-circuit respiration chamber at temperatures above and below the lower critical temperature (Tcl) at intervals during the post-weaning period.

With 14-day weaned pigs the mean 24 h heat production above Tc1 averaged 267, 328, 474 and 554 kJ/h per m2 at 3, 9, 15 and 21 days post weaning respectively. The mean thermal conductance (H/AT, kJ/h per m2 per °ΔT, where H is total heat production, m2 is the surface area calculated as 0·097 M kg0·633 and °Δ is the difference between rectal temperature, taken at 39°, and air temperature) below TC1 was calculated as 20·5, 20·1, 23·1 and 24·2 at 17, 23, 29 and 35 days of age respectively and the corresponding values for Tc1 were 25·9, 23·0, 18·4 and 16·0°C.

With 28-day weaned pigs the mean 24 h heat production above Tc1 averaged 280, 361 and 445 kJ/h per m2 at 3, 9 and 15 days post weaning. The calculated values for H/ΔT were 19·7, 20·8 and 21·6 and the corresponding values of Tcl were 24·8, 21·7, and 18·8°C at 31, 37 and 43 days of age respectively.

The results are discussed in relation to previous studies on 10-day and 28-day weaned pigs and in relation to the practical implications for pigs weaned into controlled-environment accommodation.

While there is no exact definition of sleep acceptable by all authorities, it is generally accepted that ordinary sleep is characterised by a loss of critical reactivity to events in the environment, an increased threshold of general sensibility and reflex irritability, and the ability of being aroused or brought back to a state of wakefulness (Kleitman, 1929). There are many physiological changes in sleep such as fall in blood pressure, decrease in heart rate, reduction in pH of the blood, reduction in urine secretion, decrease in metabolic rate, slow and regular breathing, muscular relaxation and the disappearance of deep reflex actions, but almost any of these physiological changes may be absent in a sleep which is normal in all other respects. It is therefore more accurate to refer to the physiological accompaniments than to the physiology of sleep (Gillespie, 1929).

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) such as rumenic acid (RA) have the potential to alter blood lipid profiles in animals and in humans. In contrast, physiological effects of conjugated α-linolenic acids (CLnAs), which concomitantly are omega-3 and conjugated fatty acids, are still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of CLnA to interfere in early steps of atherosclerosis by altering lipoprotein profiles and fatty streaks in the aortas. F1B hamsters were fed a control or one of the three hypercholesterolemic (HC) diets: HC-control, HC-RA (18:2 cis-9, trans-11) or HC-CLnA (CLnA: equimolar mixture of 18:3 cis-9, trans-11, cis-15 and cis-9, trans-13, cis-15) diet. In low-cholesterol control-fed hamsters, the proportion of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was around 45% while in HC-fed hamsters, HDL-C was around 10% and cholesterol was mostly (80%) carried by triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) triglycerides (TGs) increased by approximately 60% in hamsters fed either HC-RA or HC-CLnA compared with HC-controls but not compared with the low-cholesterol control diet. HDL cholesterol decreased by 24% and 16% in hamsters fed HC-RA and HC-CLnA, respectively. Small dense LDL-cholesterol increased by approximately 60% in hamsters fed HC-RA and HC-CLnA compared with the HC-control group and by more than a 100% compared with hamsters on the control diet. The relative percentage of liver cholesteryl ester content increased by 88% in hamsters fed HC diets compared with the control diet. Significant differences in fatty streaks were observed between control and HC-diet-fed hamsters. However, no significant difference was observed among the HC-diet-fed hamsters. This study shows that animals fed any one of the HC diets developed an adverse lipoprotein profile compared with a normolipidic diet. Also, HC-RA or HC-CLnA diets altered lipoprotein profile compared with animals fed the HC-control diet but had no beneficial effects on atherosclerosis.

Multiple births were induced in 20 hinds subjected to a progesterone plus gonadotropin treatment to advance the breeding season by about 4 to 5 weeks. In total, over 2 years, 92 hinds were treated and run with melatonin-treated stags. Of the 59 hinds that calved to the induced oestrus, 39 produced single calves, 19 produced twins and one produced triplets. Birth weight, gestation length, perinatal mortality and growth rate to weaning at ca. 20 weeks of age were compared for singles and twins. There was a significant effect of birth type on birth weight with twins being proportionately 0·30 lighter than singles (6·27 and 8-94 kg; P < 0·001), with a significant interaction between the birth weight of a calf and the sex of its co-twin (P < 0·05); males born as co-twins to females were proportionately 0·18 heavier than their co-twin females (P < 0·06), while in contrast twin male sets were substantially lighter than twin female sets. Gestation lengths were similar for both singles and twins, with significant negative relationships between gestation length and birth weight for both singles and twins, with a 2-day decrease in gestation length for a 1-kg increase in mean birth weight. There was a strong quadratic relationship between perinatal survival and birth weight; the expected mortality rates at 5, 8 and 11 kg birth weight derived from the relationship were 0·39, 0·11 and 0·39 respectively, indicating reduced probability of survival at both low and high birth weights. The regression relationships between weaning weight or growth rate to weaning and birth weight indicate that at the same birth weight, twin-reared calves were about 5 kg lighter than singles at 20 weeks, while an extra 1 kg weight at birth was associated with an extra 2 kg weight at 20 weeks.

The food conversion and meat quality of 10 Aberdeen Angus and 10 Charolais crossbred heifers, about 18 to 20 months of age, was measured. The animals were finished using diet of hay and concentrates for up to 10 weeks prior to slaughter at either fat class or 4L using the Meat and Livestock Commission scheme. There were no significant breed differences in food conversion. Post slaughter, samples of muscle from the L. dorsi over the 11 to 12th rib from all heifers were used for sensory evaluation using a trained taste panel. The muscle from heifers in fat class 4L showed an increased flavour intensity compared with those in fat class 3 (P < 0·05). No other differences in sensory characteristics were found. The measurement of muscle fibre areas in the L. dorsi revealed no significant differences, suggesting a similarity in the texture of the meat from the breeds when slaughtered at the same age.

Annual surveys of fertilizer practice have been conducted since 1942. Since 1985, nitrogen application rates to grass have progressively declined and phosphorus application has been reduced since the mid 1970s. Increasing environmental issues and the present interest in organic farming and low input systems indicate that these trends will continue. Present overall fertilizer use for grazing on dairy farms is about 170 kg N, 10 kg P and 20 kg К per ha. Higher rates are used for intensive silage production, 200 kg N, 15 kg P and 50 kg К per ha. In contrast, recommended applications are 340 kg N, 18 kg P and 25 kg К per ha for grazing and 380 kg N, 40 kg P and 260 kg К per ha for intensive silage. Herbage yield is controlled by the amount and timing of nitrogen fertilizer applications. The major mineral content depends on herbage maturity within the growth cycle; both phosphorus and potassium contents fall with declining crude protein concentrations.

Nitrogen fertilizer generally increases both magnesium and sodium concentration whilst potassium application decreases both. The overall effect of combined applications is to minimize changes. In the critical spring and autumn periods, herbage dry-matter intakes may be as important as magnesium content and availability when assessing the risk of hypomagnesaemia in the grazing cow.

Fertilizers, including phosphorus, even in the long term, have little effect on the calcium and phosphorus contents of herbage. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations are significantly ocrrelated in grazed herbage, silage and hay. If environmental or economic policies were to result in a reduction in the crude protein content of grazed herbage from ca. 250 to ca. 200 g/kg dry matter, the phosphorus intake of a cow giving 30 kg milk per day would fall by 0·5 g/kg dry-matter intake. This, together with any desirable additional magnesium, should preferably be given as an oral mineral supplement rather than by attempting to modify the mineral content of herbage.

Live-weight gains of two groups of 9-month-old Hereford × Shorthorn steers wintered in either roofless cubicles or indoor cubicles were compared during the winter of 1968/69, and during a subsequent 29 days at pasture. The animals were fed 1·82 kg concentrates per head daily and both treatment groups received equal quantities of silage.

No significant difference was found between treatments in winter live-weight gains or subsequent weight changes at pasture. The health of all animals was excellent throughout.

Forty first cross hybrid gilts were used to study the effect of dietary protein during lactation on free amino acid, protein and total oestrogen concentrations in colostrum and milk. The diets were formulated to contain similar levels of digestible energy (DE) but with either 236 or 186 g protein per kg and 13·3 and 8·1 g lysine per kg air-dried diet respectively. Both diets were offered at 2·5 kg/day for 1 week prior to farrowing and ad libitum throughout a 24-day lactation (no. = 20 gilts per treatment). Colostrum and milk were collected manually at 3h (colostrum), 3, 7, 14 and 22 days (milk) post partum. Free amino acid concentrations in colostrum and milk were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography following derivatization of the amino acids by 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate. The lysine and glutamic acid concentrations in colostrum were the most abundant free amino acids followed by tryptophan and taurine in order of decreasing abundance. Milk free taurine concentrations increased to the greatest extent among all free amino acids over the 21 days of lactation. Gilts' mature milk was rich in free taurine, glutamic acid, glycine and lysine. During the first 3 h post partum, the protein content of colostrum was unaffected by dietary protein. However, milk protein content over 7 to 21 days of lactation was significantly higher in gilts offered the higher protein diet (P < 0·001). Total solids in colostrum and milk was not significantly affected by dietary protein. At 3h and 3 days post partum the concentrations of total oestrogen in colostrum and milk, determined by radioimmunoassay, were significantly higher in gilts offered the high protein diet (P < 0·05). These finding indicate that a high protein diet in late gestation and during lactation can influence protein content, amino acid and oestrogen concentrations of milk in gilts.

The effect of energy supply between 45 and 100 kg body weight (BW) on the contribution of lean tissue (muscle plus intermuscular adipose tissue) to total protein mass was studied in Large White castrated males (cLW), crossbred Piétrain × Large White castrated males (cPPx) and boars (bPPx). The pigs were allocated to four energy levels (0·70, 0·80, 0·90 or 1·00 ad libitum) and kept in metabolism cages in experiment 1 or given food ad libitum and kept in individual pens in experiment 2. Daily protein supplies were calculated to be non-limiting for growth and identical for all pigs in experiment 1. Temperature was 23°C in both experiments. The pigs were slaughtered at 100 kg BW and physically dissected; the body tissues were chemically analysed. Taking into account housing conditions, the food intake of pigs in experiment 2 corresponded to 1·20 of ad libitum intake of pigs in experiment 1; data of both experiments were combined. The energy supply and the type of pig influenced significantly the protein content of empty BW (eBW) (170 g/kg on average), of lean (184g/kg on average) and non-lean compartment (eBW minus lean, 152 g/kg on average), the proportion of total protein deposited in lean (604 g/kg of total protein, on average) but not the protein content in fat-free eBW (209 g/kg on average). The fat-free eBW can be predicted as 4·8 times the body protein mass.

The inter-breed relationship of birth weight and maternal and paternal weight in cattle was examined using published data on over 200 different breeds from a total of over 500 experiments. This collection of data was far from optimal for estimating genetic between-breed regressions and should have contained fewer breeds and more experiments on the same breed. Nevertheless, it was established that the mean mature weights of bulls and cows maintained a constant ratio throughout the range of breed size but mean calf weight declined relative to mean sire and mean dam weight as breed size increased.

When considered in conjunction with other results on litter weight at birth, the best relationship to use appeared to be that of proportionality to dam weight to the power 0·83, which could uniformly be applied to both breeds and species. The constant of proportionality found for cattle was 0·197 which can be compared with estimates of 0·183 for sheep, 0·185 for dogs and 0·165 on average for mammalian species.

Temperament is an important trait for the management and welfare of animals and for reducing accidents involving people who work with cattle. The present study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters related to the temperament score (T) and weaning weight (WW) of Nellore cattle, reared in a beef cattle breeding program in Brazil. Data were analyzed using two different two-trait statistical models, both considering WW and T: (1) a linear-linear model in which variance components (VCs) were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood; and (2) a linear-threshold model in which VCs were estimated via Bayesian inference. WW was included in the analyses of T to minimize any possible effects of sequential selection and to allow for estimation of the genetic correlation between these two traits. The heritability estimates for T were 0.21±0.003 (model 1) and 0.26 (model 2, with a 95% credibility interval (95% CI) of 0.21 to 0.32). The estimated genetic correlations between WW and T were of a moderate magnitude (−0.33±0.01 (model 1) and −0.34 (95% CI: −0.40, −0.28, model 2). The genetic correlations between the estimated breeding values (EBVs) obtained for the animals based on the two models were high (>0.92). The use of different models had little influence on the classification of animals based on EBVs or the accuracy of the EBVs.

Growth from two years to three years and carcass yield and composition were evaluated in nine types of steers produced by mating Angus, Boran and Red Poll bulls to Ankole, Boran and local Zebu cows. One hundred and nine steers were slaughtered at the average age of 3 years and 1 month.

At three years of age, steers by Angus and Red Poll sires were 7% heavier than steers by Boran sires, while progeny of Boran and Ankole dams were 14% heavier than progeny of Zebu dams. Significant hybrid vigour effects on weight-for-age were found.

After adjustment for weight and age at slaughter, linear carcass measurements supported the impression that steers by Angus sires were more compact and blocky than steers by Red Poll and Boran sires and that progeny of Ankole dams were longer in the leg and body than progeny of Boran and Zebu dams. Steers by Red Poll sires appeared to have a higher fat content than steers by Angus and Boran sires on the basis of dissection of a tenth rib sample joint. Progeny of Boran dams had a higher dressing percentage than progeny of Ankole and Zebu dams. Hybrid vigour appeared to have little effect on carcass traits.
