The use of barley for intensive beef production, as described by Preston, Aitken, Whitelaw, Macdearmid, MacLeod and Philip (1963) is now a well established practice, but one of the hazards of this feeding system is bloat. There is evidence that the risk of this condition is accentuated if the barley husk is broken down too finely as happens if the grain is ground (Preston, Macdearmid and MacLeod, 1963; Preston, 1964). It was therefore recommended that barley should be processed in a roller mill and that the moisture content should be at least 16% (Preston, 1963), for if the grain is drier than this it is difficult to prevent excessive shattering and destruction of the husk. Suitable containers, which can be sealed in order to ensure anaerobic conditions and so overcome the problem of storing damp grain (greater than 16% moisture) have additional advantages at harvest since they can be filled quickly and easily. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the nutritive value of barley stored under these conditions.

The present experiment examined the effect of offering either a high- (H) or low- (L) energy-density diet in late gestation and early lactation on physiological parameters, body condition score (BCS) and milk production in early lactation. In all, 40 multiparous Holstein cows were randomly allocated to one of four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design, where the factors were H- or L-energy density in a total mixed ration (TMR) both pre- and post-calving. Consequently, there were four treatment groups: HH, HL, LL and LH. The pre-calving treatment was initiated 100 days prior to expected calving; the H TMR was fed ad libitum whereas the L TMR was restricted to 10 kg dry matter/day during late lactation, and to approximately 75% of energy requirements from drying off until calving. Both diets were offered ad libitum post-calving. Feeding diet H compared to L pre-calving led to higher BCS at calving (2.68 v. 2.34, P < 0.01). Energy corrected milk yield and energy-intake post-calving were not affected by pre-calving diets. Changes in BCS and blood concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate and glucose in early lactation showed that cows offered diet H pre-calving generally mobilised more body reserves compared to cows offered diet L pre-calving. An interaction between pre- and post-calving diets showed that cows offered diet H pre-calving had lower body tissue mobilisation when offered diet H post-calving compared to diet L. Cows offered diet L pre-calving, did not mobilise differently whether they were offered diet H or L post-calving. The pre- and post-calving diets had no effect on liver triacylglycerol, whereas liver glycogen was higher in cows on treatment HH compared to the other three treatments. Collectively, these results indicate that overfeeding should be avoided in late gestation and that a high-energy-density diet is desirable in early lactation in order to obtain a more favourable metabolic profile.

Immunocastration improves the welfare of castrated commercial slaughter lambs; however, the time-point at which this technique influences semen quality and sperm production has not yet been established for various vaccination schedules. Furthermore, the effect of extended intervals between second vaccination and slaughter needs to be investigated regarding continued testosterone suppression in immunocastrated lambs. The effect of extending the interval between second immunocastration vaccination and slaughter from four to six weeks on the reproductive capacity of Dohne Merino lambs was examined. A total of 40 Dohne Merino lambs were stratified according to initial weight (45.4±3.68 kg) and randomly assigned to four treatments that included intact control rams (R), Burdizzo-castrated lambs (B) and lambs immunocastrated with either four (ICS4) or six (ICS6) weeks between second vaccination and slaughter. Blood and semen samples were collected throughout the study period to determine serum testosterone concentrations, evaluate semen quality and assess sperm viability. Semen samples from R showed improvement over the trial. Throughout the collection period, B lambs had low serum testosterone concentrations, poor sperm motility and sperm viability, as expected. However, a slight increase in the percentage of live sperm in semen samples from B lambs towards the end of the collection period indicated poor success rates of the technique in some lambs. Burdizzo-castration also caused testes tissue necrosis and abscessing, indicating physiological stress. Semen appearance scores varied for both immunocastrated treatments, but the mass motility scores decreased over time. The ICS6 lambs showed a consistent and continuous decline in serum testosterone concentrations and sperm viability, with an increased percentage of dead abnormal sperm in the semen samples at the end of the study. The ICS4 treatment was successful in interrupting serum testosterone production and reducing semen quality; however, not as consistently as the ICS6 treatment. Primary immunocastration vaccination influenced serum testosterone concentrations but consistently low levels were only realised for both treatments after secondary vaccination. Although all castration treatments influenced testes size and colour, the six-week vaccination-to-slaughter interval caused a greater decrease in testes cut surface L* (lightness) colour values and in seminiferous tubule circumference. Extending the interval between second immunocastration vaccination and slaughter resulted in a more consistent and reliable influence on reproductive capacity of immunocastrated lambs. Thus, immunocastration is a suitable alternative to Burdizzo-castration regarding the interruption of testosterone production and testis functioning.

The effect of reduced balanced protein (RP) diet in the F0 and F1 generation of broiler breeders on the learning ability and memory retention of the F2 generation was investigated by means of a reward v. no reward discrimination T-maze test. There were two treatments for the F0 generation: control (C) group, reared on standard commercial diets, and reduced balanced protein (RP) group, fed with RP diets (25% reduction in CP and amino acids). The female F0-progeny of each treatment was again separated into the two dietary treatments, resulting in four treatments for the F1 generation: C/C, C/RP, RP/C and RP/RP (breeder feed in F0/F1 generation). The RP diets fed breeders received on average 10% more feed than C diets fed breeders to achieve a similar target BW. The F2 generation was composed of four treatments coming from the female F1-progeny of the four treatments and were all fed with C diet (namely C/C/C, C/RP/C, RP/C/C and RP/RP/C). All four F2 generation groups were able to complete the T-maze learning test with a slight difference in success rate but a significant difference within groups was observed regarding the time needed to complete the test. In general, the RP/RP/C group needed more time for completing the test compared with the other three groups and the shortest time was recorded for the RP/C/C group. At similar ages, breeders with early learning experience spent significantly less time in completing the test compared with unexperienced breeders. Long-term memory retention was observed in all four groups whereas the learning ability in solving the test decreased with age. It took longer for the breeders to complete the test at older ages. In conclusion, under our experimental conditions, the RP dietary treatment in previous generations had no influence on the T-maze learning ability and memory retention of broiler breeders of the third generation, although it might have effects on the working performance in the T-maze learning test of F2 generation breeders.

Genomic selection is becoming a common practise in dairy cattle, but only few works have studied its introduction in pig selection programs. Results described for this species are highly dependent on the considered traits and the specific population structure. This paper aims to simulate the impact of genomic selection in a pig population with a training cohort of performance-tested and slaughtered full sibs. This population is selected for performance, carcass and meat quality traits by full-sib testing of boars. Data were simulated using a forward-in-time simulation process that modeled around 60K single nucleotide polymorphisms and several quantitative trait loci distributed across the 18 porcine autosomes. Data were edited to obtain, for each cycle, 200 sires mated with 800 dams to produce 800 litters of 4 piglets each, two males and two females (needed for the sib test), for a total of 3200 newborns. At each cycle, a subset of 200 litters were sib tested, and 60 boars and 160 sows were selected to replace the same number of culled male and female parents. Simulated selection of boars based on performance test data of their full sibs (one castrated brother and two sisters per boar in 200 litters) lasted for 15 cycles. Genotyping and phenotyping of the three tested sibs (training population) and genotyping of the candidate boars (prediction population) were assumed. Breeding values were calculated for traits with two heritability levels (h2=0.40, carcass traits, and h2=0.10, meat quality parameters) on simulated pedigrees, phenotypes and genotypes. Genomic breeding values, estimated by various models (GBLUP from raw phenotype or using breeding values and single-step models), were compared with the classical BLUP Animal Model predictions in terms of predictive ability. Results obtained for traits with moderate heritability (h2=0.40), similar to the heritability of traits commonly measured within a sib-testing program, did not show any benefit from the introduction of genomic selection. None of the considered genomic models provided improvements in prediction ability of pigs with no recorded phenotype. However, a few advantages were found for traits with low heritability (h2=0.10). These heritability levels are characteristic for meat quality traits recorded after slaughtering or for reproduction or health traits, typically recorded on field and not in performance stations. Other scenarios of data recording and genotyping should be evaluated before considering the implementation of genomic selection in a pig-selection scheme based on sib testing of boars.

Advancing maturity of forage maize is associated with increases in the proportion of dry matter (DM) and starch and decreases in the proportions of structural carbohydrates in the ensiled crop. Three maize silages (286 (low, L), 329 (medium, M) and 379 (high, H) g DM per kg fresh weight) plus a concentrate formulated to give isonitrogenous intakes were offered to Holstein-Friesian steers fitted with a cannula in the dorsal sac of the rumen and a ‘T’ piece cannula in the proximal duodenum in an experiment with a cross-over design that allowed four collection periods. Nutrient flow to the duodenum was estimated using chromium-EDTA. Steers consumed approximately 0·6 kg DM per day less of diet L compared with the other two diets (P=0·026), resulting in less DM being digested (P=0·005) but digestibility did not differ between diets. Similar results were obtained for organic matter. There were no differences between diets in the intake or digestibility of neutral-detergent fibre. Intake, duodenal flow and faecal output of starch were greater for steers offered diets M and H compared with those given diet L (P<0·05). In all diets rumen digestion contributed to over 90% of total digestion of starch, although rumen digestibility declined significantly with advancing maize maturity (P=0·002). Molar proportions of acetic acid were higher in diet H (P<0·05) whilst proportions of propionic acid and n-butyric acid were higher in diets M and L. There were no significant differences between diets in mean rumen pH or ammonia concentrations. Mean circulating concentrations of insulin were higher (P=0·009) in cattle given diets L and M compared with diet H. There were no differences between diets in the mean circulating concentration of growth hormone, or the frequency, amplitude and duration of growth hormone pulses, or the mean circulating concentrations of IGF-1. Changes in forage composition that accompany advancing maize maturity affect overall silage digestion and circulating concentrations of insulin.

Beef producers no longer emphasize excessive fat deposition in market cattle. Recent research findings in human health suggest that our diets should contain less fat because of the cardiovascular diseases that seem associated with greater intakes of fat. Large-frame cattle slaughtered at the same chronological age as small-frame cattle have leaner carcasses and a correspondingly greater proportion of carcass protein (Arnold, Hentges and Trenkle, 1985). Determining early in life whether a type of cattle will become obese, therefore, would be of great benefit to cattle producers. Arnold et al. (1985) reported that, at 6 months of age, large-frame steers were significantly leaner than small-frame steers.

Body length and ultrasonic fat thickness measurements were taken on 86 live pigs in order to find an optimal probing site for estimation of lean meat proportion. The next day pigs were slaughtered and measurements with the Hennessy Grading Probe (HGP) were made in order to estimate the lean meat proportion.

Fat thickness, 6 cm off the dorsal mid line, increased from a value of 9·5 mm at a site 4 cm cranial to the last rib, progressively through intermediate sites to a value of 12·4 mm, 22 cm cranial to the last rib. Fat thickness measurements at different sites (live pigs) were highly correlated with HGP fat thickness at the site between 3rd and 4th from last rib (3/4 LR) and estimated lean meat proportion (carcasses); correlations ranged from 0.80 to 0.89 and -071 to -0.85 respectively. The most accurate predictor of estimated lean meat proportion from the live pig measurements was the measurement at 18 cm cranial to the last rib. Measurement at the site half the distance between the occipital bone and the base of the tail (midpoint) was the second-best for estimated lean meat proportion.

Generally, this midpoint on live pigs was situated around the 3/4 LR on carcasses. However, the range was considerable. Half of the number of animals had a midpoint in the range of -2.5 to 2.5 cm from 3/4 LR. The site midpoint is easily located on the animal and the results of this study suggest that it can be used as an accurate predictor of estimated lean meat proportion. Therefore it can serve as the probing site for classification of live pigs.

Rib bone biopsy samples are often used to estimate changes in skeletal mineral reserves in cattle but differences in sampling procedures and the bone measurements reported often make interpretation and comparisons among experiments difficult. ‘Full-core’ rib bone biopsy samples, which included the external cortical bone, internal cortical bone and trabecular bone (CBext, CBint and Trab, respectively), were obtained from cattle known to be in phosphorus (P) adequate (Padeq) or severely P-deficient (Pdefic) status. Experiments 1 and 2 examined growing steers and Experiment 3 mature breeder cows. The thickness of cortical bone, specific gravity (SG), and the amount and concentration of ash and P per unit fresh bone volume, differed among CBext, CBint and Trab bone. P concentration (mg/cc) was closely correlated with both SG and ash concentrations (pooled data, r=0.99). Thickness of external cortical bone (CBText) was correlated with full-core P concentration (FC-Pconc) (pooled data, r=0.87). However, an index, the amount of P in CBext per unit surface area of CBext (PSACB; mg P/mm2), was more closely correlated with the FC-Pconc (pooled data, FC-Pconc=37.0+146×PSACB; n=42, r=0.94, RSD=7.7). Results for measured or estimated FC-Pconc in 10 published studies with cattle in various physiological states and expected to be Padeq or in various degrees of Pdefic status were collated and the ranges of FC-Pconc indicative of P adequacy and P deficiency for various classes of cattle were evaluated. FC-Pconc was generally in the range 130 to 170 and 100 to 120 mg/cc fresh bone in Padeq mature cows and young growing cattle, respectively. In conclusion, the FC-Pconc could be estimated accurately from biopsy samples of CBext. This allows comparisons between studies where full-core or only CBext biopsy samples of rib bone have been obtained to estimate changes in the skeletal P status of cattle and facilitates evaluation of the P status of cattle.

The Kempen system is a dairy feeding system in which diet is provided in the form of a compound feed (CF) and hay offered ad libitum. Ad libitum access to CF and hay allows cows in this system to achieve a high DM intake (DMI). Out of physiological concerns, the voluntary hay intake could be increased and the consumption pattern of CF could be manipulated to maintain proper rumen functioning and health. This study investigated the effects of an artificial hay aroma and CF formulation on feed intake pattern, rumen function and milk production in mid- to late-lactating dairy cows. Twenty Holstein–Friesian cows were assigned to four treatments in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Diet consisted of CF and grass hay (GH), fed separately, and both offered ad libitum, although CF supply was restricted in maximum meal size and speed of supply by an electronic system. Treatments were the combination of two CF formulations – high in starch (CHS) and fibre (CHF); and two GH – untreated (UGH) and the same hay treated with an artificial aroma (TGH). Meal criteria were determined using three-population Gaussian–Gaussian–Weibull density functions. No GH × CF interaction effects on feed intake pattern characteristics were found. Total DMI and CF intake, but not GH intake, were greater (P < 0.01) in TGH treatment, and feed intake was not affected by type of CF. Total visits to feeders per day, visits to the GH feeder, visits to the CF feeder and CF eating time (all P < 0.01) were significantly greater in cows fed with TGH. Meal frequency, meal size and meal duration were unaffected by treatments. Cows fed CHF had a greater milk fat (P = 0.02), milk urea content (P < 0.01) and a greater milk fat yield (P < 0.01). Cows fed TGH had a greater milk lactose content and lactose yield (P < 0.05), and milk urea content (P < 0.01). Cows fed TGH had smaller molar proportions of acetic acid and greater molar proportions of propionic acid compared with UGH. In conclusion, treatment of GH with an artificial aroma increased CF intake and total DMI, but did not affect hay intake. Additionally, GH treatment increased the frequency of visits to both feeders, and affected rumen volatile fatty acid profile. Type of CF did not affect meal patterns, ruminal pH, nor fermentation profiles.

Two groups of 10 lactating does were housed separately, in isolation from bucks. Does in one group (T) were implanted with melatonin; the second group (U) were not implanted. After 30 days, five implanted and five non-implanted bucks were introduced, singly, into both groups of females each day. Subsamples of milk were taken from the daily output of each doe on 3 days each week for progesterone analysis.

Mean milk progesterone concentration during anoestrus varied significantly amongst individuals (P < 0·001), but the difference between T and U groups was not significant (1·51 and 1·93 (s.e.d. 0·52) μg/l, respectively). Elevated progesterone levels, indicative of a short oestrous cycle and commencing days 2 to 5 after male exposure, were observed in most does. Mean progesterone concentrations were 9·9 and 9·6 (s.e.d. 1·32) μg/l in T and U does respectively. Most does showed a second short cycle starting at 12 to 18 days, (mean concentration 8·4 and 10·6 (s.e.d. 1·64) ng/l, respectively). Untreated does then returned to anoestrus until mated at 63·1 (s.e. 0·94) days after male introduction. In contrast, T does either became pregnant or had a normal oestrous cycle, followed by a repeat cycle or pregnancy (mean onset 21·7 (s.e. 2·22) days after male introduction). The mean time of effective mating for group T does was 37·3 (s.e. 5·91) days, 26 days earlier than for U does (P < 0·001). Mean progesterone concentration in early pregnancy was 65·7 (s.e. 5·78) and 67·6 (s.e. 5·41) μg/l in T and U does, respectively. Males did not become sexually active until after the onset of luteal activity in the females, although treated males were earlier than untreated. There were no significant differences in lactation pattern associated with the progesterone profiles in the two groups.

The introduction of males during late anoestrus initiates short luteal cycles. Only those does closest to onset of the breeding season, in this case induced by melatonin, continue to cycle normally and mating success may require early stimulation of sexual activity in males.

A total of 1088 females of 14 breed groups (Angus and Hereford purebreds, and 12 first-cross groups) were evaluated over two locations for lifetime survival, numbers of calvings, numbers of calves weaned and cow lifetime records of calf survival. These traits are known to be related to a cow's lifetime productivity. The animals were part of the Ruakura Beef Breed Evaluation, designed to compare the growth and carcasses of steers, and the reproductive and maternal performance of females of different breed groups. Data were from 4 birth years of females and 11 breed-groups at location 1, and from 5 and 10 respectively at location 2, with seven breed-groups common to both locations. Females were first mated as yearlings. Culling at ages 2·5 to 4·5 years was based mainly on females that were non-pregnant on two occasions, whereas in subsequent years any non-pregnant female was culled. At location 1, there was a maximum possible number of mating years of 22 for females in the 1st birth year, declining to a maximum of 9 for those in the 4th birth year; for each age group at location 2 there was a maximum of 9 mating years. The average cow survival (number of mating years) was 7·26 (s.d. 3·02) at location 1 and 5·81 (s.d. 2·31) at location 2, with a coefficient of variation similar at both locations and averaging 0·41. The performances from the poorest to the best breed groups had a 1·5-fold range for number of mating years and a 1·8-fold range for number of calvings and number of calves weaned. The heritability of number of mating years (no. = 150 sire groups) was 0·13 (s.e. 0·08), number ofcalvings 0·11 (s.e. 0·08), number of calves weaned 0·15 (s.e. 0·08), and calf survival as a cow trait 0·027 (s.e. 0·018). This last heritability increased to 0·093 if adjustment was made to the underlying liability scale. There was no significant effect of breed of cow on number of mating years, nor on number of calves weaned per 100 calvings at either location, whilst the effect was significant for number ofcalvings and for number of calves weaned per cow (P < 0·10). The wide breed variation pointed to opportunities for selection among breeds, whilst the low heritabilities suggested that within-breed selection will be slow unless early indicator traits can be found.

The post-fertilisation developmental capacity of bovine oocytes recovered by ultrasound guided transvaginal follicular aspiration (ovum pick-up, OPU) is influenced by diet-induced changes in hormone and metabolite concentrations. The objectives of this experiment were first to determine whether post-prandial changes in hormone concentrations, induced by changing the frequency of feeding, influenced oocyte quality and second whether changes in plasma glucagon concentration were associated with oocyte quality. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, Holstein heifers (six per treatment) were fed either fibre- or starch-based diets containing either 189 or 478 g starch/kg dry matter. The diets were offered in either two or four equal meals per day and supplied twice the maintenance energy requirement. Blood samples were obtained both at weekly intervals (three samples per heifer, collected before feeding) during the experiment and throughout an entire 24-h period (15 or 17 samples per heifer for twice or four times daily-fed heifers, respectively). Each heifer underwent six sessions of OPU (twice weekly) beginning 25 days after introduction of the diets. Oocyte quality was assessed by development to the blastocyst stage in synthetic oviductal fluid following in vitro fertilisation. Mean weekly plasma insulin concentrations did not differ between diets, but plasma glucagon concentrations were greatest when heifers were fed the starch-based diet twice daily compared with the other diets. When heifers were offered four meals per day, there were no meal-related changes in hormone concentrations. However, when heifers were offered two meals per day, plasma insulin concentration increased after feeding the starch-based, but not the fibre-based diet. Plasma glucagon concentration increased after meals when heifers were fed twice daily and the increase was substantially greater when the starch-based diet was fed. Treatments did not influence (overall mean with mean ± s.e.) ovarian follicle size distribution or oocyte recovery by OPU (6.2 ± 0.4 per heifer), the proportion of oocytes that cleaved following insemination (0.57 ± 0.030) or blastocyst yield (0.27 ± 0.027 of oocytes cleaved). In conclusion, by feeding diets differing in carbohydrate source at different frequencies of feeding, meal-related changes in plasma hormone profiles were altered significantly, but oocyte quality was not affected. Therefore effects of diet on oocyte quality appear not to be mediated by meal-related fluctuations in hormone concentrations.

The present experiment was undertaken to investigate adaptations to insulin action on metabolism during lactation by using plasma concentrations of β hydroxybutyrate (β OH) free fatty acids (FFA) and lactate (L) as indicators. The study included three groups each of four goats. One group was used at 12 to 31 days post partum (early lactation), one group at 98 to 143 days post partum (mid lactation) and one group at 1 year post partum (dry period). For a given physiological state, each goat was examined four times to study the effect of insulin infused for 2·5 h at two rates, medium (0·36 nmol/min) followed by high (1·79 nmol/min) in two protocols: under normal aminoacidaemia in study 1 followed by hyperaminoacidaemia in study 2. Appropriate amino acid infusions were used to blunt insulin-induced hypoaminoacidaemia under eukaliaemic and euglycaemic clamp conditions or to create hyperaminoacidaemia and maintain this state under insulin treatment. In the basal state βOH (P < 0·05), mid lactation) and FFA (P < 0·05 early lactation) were higher during lactation than in the dry period. Plasma L was unmodified. Insulin infusion always resulted in a decrease in βOH levels (P < 0·05). In both studies, the change in βOH concentration as a function of changes in plasma insulin (an index of insulin sensitivity) was greater during early lactation than in the dry period (P < 0·05); this was also the case of mid lactation in study 1. Insulin infusion decreased plasma FFA during early lactation and in the dry period in study 1 (P < 0·05), and there was a trend for insulin sensitivity to be greater during early lactation. In both studies insulin infusion did not affect plasma L in lactating goats whereas plasma L was increased in dry animals (P < 0·05). The results demonstrate that during early lactation, compared with the dry period, there is an increased ability of insulin to lower βOH and FFA concentrations. These effects were not altered by increasing plasma amino acid concentrations during insulin infusion.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prediction ability of models that cope with longevity phenotypic expression as uncensored and censored in Nellore cattle. Longevity was defined as the difference between the dates of last weaned calf and cow birth. There were information of 77 353 females, being 61 097 cows with uncensored phenotypic information and 16 256 cows with censored records. These data were analyzed considering three different models: (1) Gaussian linear model (LM), in which only uncensored records were considered; and two models that consider both uncensored and censored records: (2) Censored Gaussian linear model (CLM); and (3) Weibull frailty hazard model (WM). For the model prediction ability comparisons, the data set was randomly divided into training and validation sets, containing 80% and 20% of the records, respectively. There were considered 10 repetitions applying the following restrictions: (a) at least three animals per contemporary group in the training set; and (b) sires with more than 10 progenies with uncensored records (352 sires) should have daughters in the training and validation sets. The variance components estimated using the whole data set in each model were used as true values in the prediction of breeding values of the animals in the training set. The WM model showed the best prediction ability, providing the lowest χ2 average and the highest number of sets in which a model had the smallest value of χ2 statistics. The CLM and LM models showed prediction abilities 2.6% and 3.7% less efficient than WM, respectively. In addition, the accuracies of sire breeding values for LM and CLM were lower than those obtained for WM. The percentages of bulls in common, considering only 10% of sires with the highest breeding values, were around 75% and 54%, respectively, between LM–CLM and LM–WM models, considering all sires, and 75% between LM–CLM and LM–WM, when only sires with more than 10 progenies with uncensored records were taken into account. These results are indicative of reranking of animals in terms of genetic merit between LM, CLM and WM. The model in which censored records of longevity were excluded from the analysis showed the lowest prediction ability. The WM provides the best predictive performance, therefore this model would be recommended to perform genetic evaluation of longevity in this population.

The effects of undernutrition and of the duration of undernutrition on changes in whole animal energy metabolism and on spontaneous physical activity were studied in adult, non-lactating, non-pregnant ewes. Animals were first given food at 338 kj metabolizable energy (ME) per day per kg live weight 0·75 (LW0·75), (M). Intake was then reduced by half (0·5M) during 7 weeks. Diet apparent digestibility decreased slightly with undernutrition. Rate of LW loss remained constant throughout the whole 0·5M period. Heat production (HP) declined by proportionately 0·18 within the 1st week at 0·5M and by another 0·05 in the following weeks. These latter changes were directly related to LW loss, since HP scaled to metabolic LW remained unchanged over the whole 0·5M period. Time spent standing decreased with undernutrition from proportionately 0·42 at M to 0·33 at 0·5M as a result of a reduction in the average duration of individual standing periods at all hours of the day except in a few hours preceeding feeding times. Energy cost of standing could not be dissociated from the energy cost of eating; these overall costs were not clearly modified by undernutrition but varied with time post prandially. Standing cost alone was estimated at 10 J/min per kg LW. Efficiency of ME utilization for maintenance (km) was calculated at 0·71, and ME requirements for maintenance (MEm) at 338 kj/day per kg LW0'75. No adaptation was noted with the duration of undernutrition. Accounting for the behavioural adaptation tended to increase km to 0·74 but MEm remained unchanged, suggesting that the behavioural changes observed with undernutrition were not sufficient to significantly modify whole animal energy metabolism.

While beneficial for sow reproductive efficiency and biosecurity, segregated early weaning (SEW) leads to a systemic immune response that adversely affects the digestive physiology and post-weaning growth of pigs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of a glucocorticoid receptor agonist (GA) on growth performance, measures of immune function and intestinal integrity of SEW pigs. In both experiments, pigs were fed corn-soybean meal-based starter diets. In the first experiment, 48 pigs (initial BW 4.8 ± 0.7 kg) were weaned at 21 ± 1 days and randomly assigned to three GA treatment groups: 0, 0.2 and 0.6 mg GA/kg of BW injected intramuscularly. Treatments were administered one day before weaning. Pigs in the 0 mg GA group received sterile saline in place of GA. Body weight was measured daily from one day before to 7 days post-weaning, and then weekly until 28 days post-weaning. Piglets treated with 0.2 mg GA had a higher BW than piglets in other treatment groups during the 28-day course of the study (P <0.02). To further explore the mechanisms behind this result, a second experiment was performed in which a total of 18 gilts (BW 5.6 ± 0.85 kg) were randomly assigned into three treatment groups: suckling plus saline (UWS), weaned treated with GA (WGA; 0.2 mg GA/kg BW) and weaned plus saline (CON). Treatments were administered one day before and 3 days post-weaning. The WGA and CON groups were weaned at 23 ± 2 days, while the UWS group remained with sow for the duration of the study. Body weight was measured daily and blood plasma was collected at 0, 1, 4 and 5 days post-weaning. All gilts were euthanized 5 days after weaning and jejunum samples were collected for mucosal scrapings, histomorphological analysis and gene expression analysis. Plasma levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and haptoglobin were lower in WGA pigs compared with CON (P <0.02), while plasma total antioxidant capacity was higher in WGA pigs compared with both CON and UWS groups (P <0.01). Relative to CON, GA downregulated IL-18 gene expression in the jejunum, as assessed by both tissue homogenate and mucosal scrapings, but it upregulated claudin-IV gene expression only in the tissue homogenate (P <0.01). These results suggest that GA treatment improves the growth performance of SEW pigs in part by mitigating the negative effects of systemic inflammation. However, the effect of GA on barrier integrity requires further investigation.

Twenty-eight lactating cows were used in an experiment of changeover design with four periods to evaluate concentrates containing 0, 16, 32, 49, 65, 81 and 97% dried grass. The dry matter of the dried grass was 63% digestible. The concentrates also contained barley, together with groundnut meal to equalize their protein content at approximately 16-5% of dry matter. All animals had grass silage ad libitum and all concentrates were given at the rate of 0·4 kg/kg milk. Milk yield, milk composition and liveweight change were not affected by including dried grass in the concentrate. No significant effect of concentrate on silage intake was obtained. Ration digestibility and nitrogen utilization were measured with four animals per treatment. The digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and nitrogen was not reduced by increasing the proportion of dried grass in the concentrate. The efficiency of utilization of apparently digested nitrogen for total productive purposes (body retention and milk nitrogen) was also not affected by the proportion of dried grass.

With a view to incorporating identifiable environmental factors such as month of calving as random effects in models for dairy sire and cow breeding value estimation, an analysis was undertaken of environmental components of variance for fat yield in lactations 1 to 5 of pedigree British Friesian-Holstein cattle. Records of fat yield and of log fat yield on daughters of widely used sires were first corrected for age and month of calving and for sire in each lactation on a national basis. Variance components for herd-year, herd-year × lactation, herd-year × month of calving, herd-year × month of calving × lactation and error were then estimated for pairs of lactations.

The results were most consistent for log fat yield, where heterogeneity of variance was less. Correlations were, approximately, 0·45 and 0·42 for records in the same herd-year and lactation for lactation 1 or a later lactation, respectively, and approximately 0·40 for records in the same herd-year and different lactations. Within herd-year and lactation, correlations of records in the same month were approximately 0·10 for lactation 1 and 0·08 for later lactations, and for different lactations the correlations were 0·06 if lactation 1 was included and 0·08 otherwise. Thus, the effects appear to be similar for later lactations, which can be pooled, but effects for month and month × lactation 1 v. later should be fitted.

The importance of measuring partition between body and milk in dairy cows and identifying the factors underlying it has long been recognised. However accurate measurements of partition In the body are few because of the difficulty and expense of the techniques.

The purpose of the present experiment was to measure the effects in autumn-calving Holstein-Friesian cows given grass silage ad libitum of amount of concentrate and stage of lactation on body composition by direct (Gibb et al 1992a, b) and Indirect (Kings et al 1992) techniques, adipose tissue metabolism (Walsh et al 1992) and milk production. In a related trial, energy balance was measured in other cows by Indirect calorimetry (Cammell et al 1992).
