An attempt was made to use anal skinfold thickness as a quantitative measurement to estimate body fatness in Boran cattle (Bos indicus). Using the normal single-operator technique the relationship between skinfold thickness and the other measurements was poor but was greatly improved by using two operators. It nevertheless remained inferior to body condition score, which was very highly correlated with estimated body fat proportion, It was concluded that condition scoringprovides a valuable index of the nutritional status of Bos indicus cattle, and that measurements of anal fold thickness are not applicable to such animals.

Two trials were conducted with two complete fattening diets contain- ing 25 and 45 % fibrous roughage, to examine the effects of three moisture levels and five soaking conditions on the performance and ruminal fermentation of fattening cattle.

Differences between treatments in live-weight gain and carcass-weight gain were not significant but there were differences in the efficiency of conversion of metabolizable energy into live weight and into carcass weight and in some instances these were significant. There was a trend towards increased weight of kidney, pelvic and cod fats and a slight decrease in weight of other fat trim of the carcass (subcutaneous and intermuscular) on the treated diets, as compared with the dry control diet.

The pH of the rumen liquor of animals given the soaked rations was lower and the total volatile fatty acid concentration higher than that of animals receiving the dry control diet. The propionic acid concentration in rumen liquor was significantly higher in animals receiving moistened diets.

Daily partial milk yield of Sanga cows in 13 smallholder agropastoralist herds at two locations on the Accra Plains was recorded through monthly sampling. Estimates of mean daily partial milk yield and milk composition were computed from 1266 observations. The unadjusted mean daily partial milk yield was 875 (s.e. 11) g. The composition of milk: total solids (TS), fat (F) and solid-not-fat (SNF) were 131 (s.e. 14), 41 (s.e. 11) and 90 (s.e. 7) g/kg respectively. Least squares estimate of mean daily partial milk yield were 808·2 and 462·4 g with average s.e. of 41·8 for wet and dry season respectively. The wet and dry season differences in daily partial milk yield, TS and F were highly significant (P < 0·01). Seasonal difference in SNF was not significant.

Herd difference in partial milk yield, TS, F and SNF were highly significant (P < 0·02). There were no significant effects of location on daily partial milk yield and SNF, although location effects on F and TS were significant (P < 0·05). The highest milk yield was observed in cows in third lactation and the lowest in cows in seventh lactation (P < 0·01). Daily partial milk yield peaked in the 3rd month of lactation. On average, lactation length was 210 to 240 days. Both linear and quadratic effects of stage of lactation were highly significant (P < 0·01). Lactation curve parameters for partially milked cows were also estimated. The implications of the results for milk production in sub-Saharan Africa were discussed.

This article presents an uncertainty analysis of the productivity of cattle herds in traditional farming systems of West and Central African drylands. The study focused on productivity rates in animal numbers (RN) and meat weights (RW) estimated from a herd growth model, which were compared with FAOSTAT-based estimates. The uncertainty analysis contained the following two steps: uncertainty propagation and a global sensitivity analysis. The analysis was based on a state-of-the-art of the current knowledge and a set of available data on the herd performances. The calculations used Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the 95% confidence intervals (CI) of RN and RW and the standardized regression coefficients method to estimate the contribution of the input variables to the outputs variances. The mean rate RN was estimated to 0.127 animal/animal-year with a 95% CI of (0.091, 0.163) and the mean rate RW to 11.7 kg/animal-year with a 95% CI of (8.8, 14.7), corresponding to relative variation around the mean of about ±29% and ±25%, respectively. The input variables that contributed most to the variance of RN (almost 76% of the output variance) were the calving rate, the adult female mortality rate and the female proportion in the population (determined by the pattern of the male offtake in the herds). The input variables that contributed most to the variance of RW were the same as those for RN plus the adult live weights. The CI ranges that were estimated in this article indicate that productivity rates based on literature data or expert estimations of the herd performances should be considered with caution. Research efforts based on gold-standard herd monitoring protocols accounting for temporal and spatial variations should be undertaken in future to decrease the knowledge gaps on the input variables that contribute most to these ranges.

A study was conducted to find early predictors of the Booroola gene in several generations of a crossbred sheep population. Merino carriers of the Booroola gene were mated with Texel sheep to improve prolificacy of the latter. Ovulation rate at 8 months of age, litter size at 1 and 2 years of age and FSH and inhibin levels at 3, 4, 5 and 6 weeks of age were determined in about 700 females.

Gibbs sampling was applied for inference in a mixed inheritance model. Estimates for the gene effect in heterozygous females were +1·5 corpora lutea and +1·3 lambs at 2 years of age. The gene effect on litter size at 1 year was small. The only significant major gene effect for hormone levels found was for lnINH4 (–0·66).

A number of hormone levels and combinations of hormone levels appeared to be useful predictors of carrier status of individual animals. In comparison with a situation where only parents' genotype is known, posterior probabilities for non-carriers were on average increased from 50 to over 95% when FSH levels were used. However, the combined posterior probabilities of carriers and non-carriers increased only up to 67%. So in general, classification with Gibbs sampling resulted in too few animals being identified as carrier. The sum of FSH levels at 3, 4, 5 and 6 weeks of age is proposed as a predictor of presence of the Booroola gene in an animal. Multivariate analysis of mixed inheritance models could help to find more effective combinations.

In mammals ‘maleness’, i.e. the presence of testes, is thought to be controlled by a single gene on the Y chromosome. Recently, a candidate gene termed the SRY (sex-determining region Y) gene has been located. If the SRY gene is the gene causing maleness then a transgenic male with the SRY gene on an autosome would produce a greater proportion of male offspring than a normal male. This would be advantageous in situations where male offspring are more valuable than females. Such transgenic males have a reduced probability of propagating their genotype and an effort has to be made to avoid their extinction. This is at the cost of genetic progress which must be made to enable the transgenics to remain competitive with normal males.

In a simulated beef cattle breeding scheme if half of the annual matings were made to transgenics then after 15 years of selection the transgenic males fell the equivalent of 2·6 years of selection behind males in a traditional herd. If all matings were made to transgenics they fell over 9 years behind. Selection for lean food conversion ratio was considered as an example. After 15 years of selection the gain in biological efficiency from more male offspring outweighed the loss from reduced genetic progress only when more than 0·5 of the bulls used in the breeding scheme were normal males. In practice, the difficulty of maintaining a small population of transgenic males along with other costs not included in the calculations suggest that breeding schemes in beef cattle with an SRY transgene would not be practicable without further technology.

In the dairy industry, excess dietary CP is consistently correlated with decreased conception rates. However, amount of excess CP effects on reproductive function in beef cattle is largely undefined. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of excess metabolizable protein (MP) supplementation from a moderately abundant rumen undegradable protein (RUP) source (corn gluten meal: 62% RUP) on ovarian function and circulating amino acid (AA) concentrations in beef cows consuming low quality forage. Non-pregnant, non-lactating beef cows (n=16) were allocated by age, BW and body condition score (BCS) to 1 of 2 isocaloric supplements designed to maintain BW for 60 days. Cows had ad libitum access to corn stalks and were individually offered a corn gluten meal-based supplement daily at 125% (MP125) or 150% (MP150) of National Research Council (NRC) MP requirements. After a 20-day supplement adaptation period, cows were synchronized for ovulation. After 10 days of synchronization, follicular growth was reset with gonadotropin releasing hormone. Daily thereafter, transrectal ultrasonography was performed to diagram ovarian follicular waves, and blood samples were collected for hormone, metabolite and AA analyses. After 7 days of observation of estrus, corpus luteum (CL) size was determined via ultrasound. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedures of SAS. No differences (P⩾0.21) in BW and BCS existed throughout the study; however, plasma urea N at ovulation was greater (P=0.04) in MP150. Preovulatory ovarian follicle size at dominance, duration of dominance, size at spontaneous luteolysis, length of proestrus and wavelength were not different (P⩾0.11) between treatments. However, ovulatory follicles were larger (P=0.04) and average antral follicle count was greater (P=0.01) in MP150 than MP125. Estradiol concentration and ratio of estradiol to ovulatory follicle volume were not different due to treatment (P⩾0.25). While CL volume 7 days post-estrus was greater (P<0.01) in MP150 than MP125, circulating progesterone 7 days post-estrus and ratio of progesterone to CL volume were not different (P⩾0.21). Total AA were not different (P⩾0.76) at study initiation or completion; however, as a percent of total AA, branched-chain AA at ovulation were greater (P=0.02) in MP150. In conclusion, supplementation of CP at 150% of NRC MP requirements from a moderately undegradable protein source may enhance growth of the ovulatory follicle and subsequent CL compared with MP supplementation at 125% of NRC MP requirements.

In three experiments, seven grass silages, four grass hays and winter barley straw, with and without anhydrous ammonia treatment, were offered ad libitum to a total of 134 Finn Dorset ewes in weeks 11 to 15 of pregnancy and intakes were measured. The untreated straw diet was supplemented with 300 g fresh weight of concentrates per ewe. Number of foetuses carried did not affect intakes in mid pregnancy. Organic matter digestibilities measured in vivo in week 15, ranged from 0·39 to 0·69 for hays and 0·53 to 0·79 for silages. Generally, between weeks 11 to 15 of pregnancy, hay intakes showed either little change or slight increases whereas intakes of silages or straws showed little change or slight decreases. Forage intake was higher on the better quality hays and silages and ewes gained weight and body condition, compared with losses for the poorer diets. In late pregnancy, the ewes were offered grass silage ad libitum and rations of concentrates according to a rationing programme. There were no residual effects of the mid-pregnancy treatments on lamb birth weights but ewes offered the poorer diets in mid pregnancy still tended to be lighter and thinner post partum. Equations are presented to predict the intakes of hays and silages from food and animal factors.

One of the main goals of selection schemes in beef cattle populations is to increase carcass weight at slaughter. Live weights at different growth stages are frequently used as selection criteria under the hypothesis that they usually have a high and positive genetic correlation with weight at slaughter. However, the presence of compensatory growth may bias the prediction ability of early weights for selection purposes. Recursive models may represent an interesting alternative for understanding the genetic and phenotypic relationship between weight traits during growth. For the purposes of this study, the analysis was performed for three different set of data from the Pirenaica beef cattle breed: weight at 120 days (W120) and at 210 days (W210); W120 and carcass weight at slaughter at 365 days (CW365); W210 and CW365. The number of records for each analysis was 8592, 4648 and 3234, respectively. A pedigree composed of 56323 individuals was also included. The statistical model comprised sex, year-season of birth, herd and slaughterhouse, plus a non-linear recursive dependency between traits. The dependency was modeled as a polynomial up to the 4th degree and models were compared using a Logarithm of Conditional Predictive Ordinates. The results of model comparison suggest that the best models were the 3rd degree polynomial for W120-W210 and W120-CW365 and the 2nd degree polynomial for W210-CW365. The posterior mean estimates for heritabilities ranged between 0.29 and 0.44 and the posterior mean estimates of the genetic correlations were null or very low, indicating that the relationship between traits is fully captured by the recursive dependency. The results imply that the predictive ability of the performance of future growth is low if it is only based on records of early weights. The usefulness of slaughterhouse records in beef cattle breeding evaluation is confirmed.

1. Attributes desired in the gammons of bacon pigs are discussed, together with the methods whereby they are measured.

2. An experiment is described in which 16 judges made visual assessments of the qualities of the gammons of 10 carcasses of bacon weight from photographs, both of the fresh carcasses and of the cured bacon sides.

3. The judges did not show a high level of agreement in their rankings of the gammons. Although the overall rankings by the panel of the gammons on the fresh carcasses and on the bacon sides were similar, neither ranking was related to the composition or yield of the gammons.

4. The judges showed better agreement in their rankings of photographs of the cut surfaces of these 10 gammons and the cross-sections of the cooked gammons produced from them; in this case their preferences were related to the lean content of the gammons.

5. A second trial in which 25 judges scored 12 actual bacon sides for the quality of their gammons showed an even lower level of agreement between the judges' rankings, and again there was little agreement between the overall rankings of the panel and the results of dissections.

Genetic evaluation of Piétrain sires in Flanders occurs under standardized conditions, on test stations with fixed dam breeds, standardized diets and uniform management practices. As environmental conditions vary on commercial farms and differ from the test stations, this study aimed at understanding to what extent the sire, the dam breed and the interaction between both affects the translation of breeding values to practice. Dams of two commercial breeds were inseminated with semen from one of five different sires selected for contrasting breeding values (daily gain, feed conversion ratio and carcass quality). For each sire by dam breed combination, six pen replicates (with three gilts and three barrows per pen) were evaluated for growth performance from 9 weeks of age (20 kg) to slaughter (110 kg), and for carcass and meat quality. In our experimental setup, both sire and dam breed affected growth, carcass and meat quality traits. No significant sire×dam breed interactions on performance could be detected. Though a tendency for interaction on average daily feed intake between 20 and 110 kg (P=0.087), and on pork colour (lightness) (P=0.093) was present. In general, offspring of all tested sires behaved similarly in both dam breeds, indicating that estimated breeding values for Piétrain sires determined in one dam breed are representative in other dam breeds as well.

Objective: To evaluate mesometrial transplantation of frozen-thawed ovarian tissue in rabbit and to choose the optimized fertilization method for oocytes retrieved from grafts by investigating the capability of oocyte fertilization and further development. Forty rabbits were divided into three groups randomly: control group, fresh tissues transplantation group and frozen-thawed tissues transplantation group. Three months after the transplantation, rabbits were stimulated with FSH and oocytes were retrieved 13 h after human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) injection. Oocytes matured in vivo or in vitro were then fertilized by conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), followed by observation and evaluation of fertilization rate and blastocyst formation rate. Blastocytes embryos were transferred to pseudopregnancy rabbits to observe pregnancy rate and birth rate. There were no significant differences in the percentage of oocytes matured either in vivo or in vitro among the three groups. The fertilization rate, cleavage rate and blastocyst formation rate of in vivo-matured oocytes had no difference among the three groups, whether they were fertilized by IVF or ICSI. Significantly higher fertilization rates of in vitro-matured oocytes were observed with ICSI compared with IVF in each group. The blastocyst formation rate of in vitro-matured oocytes was significantly lower than that of in vivo-matured oocytes in each group. The birth rate of in vivo-matured oocytes was significantly higher than that of in vitro-matured oocytes, although the pregnancy rate was similar between them. Mesometrial transplantation of frozen-thawed ovarian tissue may provide favorable conditions for follicle development. Oocytes retrieved from mesometrial grafts can develop to the blastocyst stage and produce live offspring. ICSI can optimize the fertilization rate of in vitro-matured oocytes retrieved from grafts.

Pre-weaning growth data from 3822 calves reared in 11 Victorian herds were analysed. The results suggested that the superiority of males (bulls) over castrated males (steers) in pre-weaning growth was due, at least partly, to the early castration of poorly growing male calves, i.e. to the effects of early selection. The extent of this selection bias was further examined using results from similar studies and from experiments in which bulls and steers were selected without bias. These studies strongly supported the view that the superiority of bulls over steers was primarily due to selection and not to sex effects. If sex did influence the bull-steer difference it was of no statistical or practical importance.

In the Victorian data, the ratio of bulls to steers was higher in subclasses in which average growth rates were higher. When selection effects are correlated in this way with other environmental effects such as age of dam effects further biases may arise in estimation of those effects and hence in individual or mass selection.

The results indicated, therefore, that unless bulls and steers are treated as one sex biases can arise in both individual selection and progeny selection.

Immune competence can be tested by challenging organisms with a set of infectious agents. However, disease control requirements impose restrictions on the infliction of infections upon domestic pigs. Alternatively, vaccinations induce detectable immune responses that reflect immune competence. Here, we tested this approach with tetanus toxoid (TT) in young domestic pigs. To optimize the vaccination protocol, we immunized the pigs with a commercial TT vaccine at the age of 21 or 35 days. Booster immunizations were performed either 14 or 21 days later. TT-specific antibodies in plasma as well as lymphoproliferative responses were determined both 7 and 14 days after booster immunization using ELISA and lymphocyte transformation tests, respectively. In addition, general IgG and IgM plasma concentrations and mitogen-induced proliferation were measured. The highest TT-specific antibody responses were detected when blood samples were collected 1 week after a booster immunization conducted 21 days after primary immunization. The pigs’ age at primary immunization did not have a significant influence on TT-specific antibody responses. Similarly, the TT-specific proliferative responses were highest when blood samples were collected 1 week after booster immunization, while age and time of primary and booster immunization were irrelevant in our setup. While general IgG and IgM plasma levels were highly age dependent, there were no significant age effects for TT-specific immune responses. In addition, mitogen-induced proliferation was independent of immunization as well as blood sampling protocols. In summary, our model of TT vaccination provides an interesting approach for the assessment of immune competence in young pigs. The detected vaccination effects were not biased by age, even though our data were acquired from immune systems that were under development during our tests.

Soya bean (Glycine max) contains large quantities of lectin, which has been implicated as an important anti-nutritional component of animal feeds; but the significance of this has previously been difficult to assess, since no simple method has been available to accurately measure lectin concentration.

We have now developed an assay method suitable for the routine screening of animal feeds using minimal laboratory apparatus. The technique relies upon an enzyme linked immunusorbent assay (ELISA) system, to give a visible colour indication of the presence of SBL.

Samples (100 ul) are serialy diluted on microtitre plates prior coated with affinity purified rabbit anti-SBL antibody. Bound lectins are then detected using a second anti-SBL antibody raised in sheep, followed by an alkaline phosphatase conjugated pig anti (goat) IgG. The addition of p-nitrophenyl phosphate disodium (Sigma 104) substrate gives a yellow colour in the presence of lectin.

The first paper of this series (Alder, Tayler and Rudman, 1964) described experiments carried out over 4 years on the effects of hexoestrol on live-weight gain and herbage intake in grazing steers. The 52 steers used weighed between 750 and 1,100 lb. initially and included four pairs of twins. The experiments lasted between 55 and 124 days and involved both summer and winter grazing. This paper is concerned with observations made on the animals after slaughter.

With the failure of current nutritional schemes for dairy ruminants to predict yields of milk and milk components, and perceptions of milk's nutritional value following recommendations to reduce dietary fat intake, an integrated approach to feeding and metabolism needs to be developed. Such a system must therefore be ‘metabolite’ based.

An ability to predict changes in milk constituent output in response to alterations in nutrition requires, in the first instance, the identification of specific precursors for milk component synthesis in the lactating mammary gland. Arteriovenous differences across the mammary gland indicate that blood free amino acids (AA) are either taken-up by the gland in excess, equal to, or in insufficient amounts compared to their output in milk (1). Isotope labelling experiments have indicated that, in addition to AA free in blood, the mammary gland utilises a substantial amount of AA derived from constitutive mammary gland protein breakdown (2). The present experiment was designed to investigate the AA precursors and kinetics of milk protein synthesis and to confirm and extend the latter observations.

Nutritional alternatives to strengthen animal immunocompetence are critical for welfare and productivity in livestock systems, such as beef cattle operations. This experiment evaluated physiological and innate immunity effects of supplementing an immunomodulatory feed ingredient (Omnigen-AF; Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ, USA) to beef heifers administered bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In total, 8 non-pregnant, non-lactating nulliparous Angus×Hereford heifers (676±4 days of age) were ranked by BW (473±8 kg), and assigned to crossover design containing two periods of 34 days each. Heifers were housed in individual pens and had ad libitum access to meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis L.) hay, water and a granulated commercial vitamin+mineral mix. Within each period, heifers received (as-fed basis) 227 g/day of dried distillers grains including (OMN) or not (CON) 56 g of Omnigen-AF for 34 days. On day 28 of each period (0800 h), heifers received an intravenous bolus dose (0.5 μg/kg of BW, diluted in 5 ml of 0.9% sterile saline) of bacterial LPS (Escherichia coli 0111:B4). Hay DM intake was recorded daily from day 0 to 34. Blood was collected at −1, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h relative to LPS administration. Heifer intravaginal temperature was recorded every 10 min from −0.5 to 10 h relative to LPS administration. No treatment effect was detected (P=0.35) for hay DM intake during the experiment. No treatment effects were detected (P⩾0.64) for intravaginal temperature and plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis-α, cortisol and haptoglobin, which increased (time effect, P<0.01) for OMN and CON heifers and peaked at 4.5, 2, 4 and 48 h, respectively, after LPS administration. No treatment effects were detected (P⩾0.35) for whole blood mRNA expression of chemokine ligand 5, tumor necrosis-α, cyclooxygenase 2 and interleukin 8, which also increased (time effect, P<0.01) for OMN and CON heifers and peaked at 0.5, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 h, respectively, after LPS administration. Whole blood mRNA expression of interleukin 8 receptor and L-selectin were also similar (P⩾0.61) between OMN and CON heifers, and decreased (time effect, P<0.01) for both treatments reaching nadir levels at 1 and 2.5 h, respectively, after LPS administration. Collectively, OMN supplementation did not modulate the physiological and innate immunity responses of beef heifers to bacterial LPS administration.

The effects of defaunation on growth and digestion were measured in sheep fed fresh Digitaria decumbens grass cut at four stages of regrowth 14, 28, 42, and 56 days, and with different protein to energy (P/E) ratios. Two completely randomized designs trials (growth and digestion) were conducted using faunated animals, defaunated rams and protozoa free lambs. The digestion trial: eight faunated and eight defaunated rams fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were fed 4 diets (diets D1 to D4) to measure digestion parameters. The dietary P/E ratios were 120 (D1), 130 (D2), 130 (D3), and 140 (D4) g PDIN/UFL (Protein Digested in the small Intestine supplied by microbial protein from rumen-degraded protein/Feed Unit for Lactation) and the grass stages of regrowth were 56, 42, 28, and 14 days, respectively. Increasing the dietary P/E ratios increased dry matter intake (DMI) and the total tract digestibility of organic matter (OM), NDF and CP. Defaunation decreased DMI, except for rams fed D4 diet. Defaunation also decreased total tract digestibility of OM except for rams fed D1 diet and that of NDF except for rams fed D1 and D4 diets. Increasing the dietary P/E ratios also increased nitrogen intake and ammonia (NH3) concentration in the rumen, whereas defaunation decreased them. The dietary P/E ratio increased non-NH3 nitrogen and microbial nitrogen duodenal flows and microbial efficiency. Defaunation did not affect duodenal flows of neither non-NH3 nitrogen and microbial nitrogen or microbial efficiency. The growth trial: 20 faunated and 20 protozoa free lambs were fed four diets (diets D5 to D8) to measure their average daily gain (ADG). The dietary P/E ratios were 60 (D5), 70 (D6), 80 (D7) and 100 (D8) g PDIN/UFL and the stages of regrowth were 56, 42, 28, and 14 days, respectively. DMI of lambs increased with P/E ratio. Protozoa free lambs had greater DMI than faunated ones when fed D7 diet (80.8 v. 74.9 g/kg LW0.75, respectively). The ADG of the lambs increased with P/E ratio. Fed on the same D5 diet, protozoa free lambs had greater ADG than faunated lambs (29.8 v. 11.6 g/day, respectively). In conclusion, animal response to defaunation was modulated by the P/E ratio of the D. decumbens grass diets. Defaunation increased ADG of lambs fed forage with the lowest P/E ratio, while digestion and nitrogen duodenal flows of rams fed the lowest P/E ratio were not affected.

The LDH values in blood plasma of Pietrains and Large Whites are significantly different during moderate stress (sampling of blood), being higher in the Pietrains. The difference is largest in the LDH-5, the muscle iso-enzyme. Not only are the values higher, but the isoenzyme is also demonstrable in more individual animals.

More stressful situations (forced muscular exercise) result in a rise in plasma LDH-5 in both breeds; the rise is larger in the Pietrains. Two possible causes for the higher LDH-5 values in Pietrain blood plasma are suggested.
