In an effort to better understand the consequences of early weaning (EW) for replacement beef heifers, a two-phase experiment was conducted investigating the impact on metabolic function and documenting reproductive characteristics. In phase 1, Angus×Simmental heifers (n=35) were stratified by BW and sire, and randomly assigned to either a normal weaning (NW, n=18) or EW (n=17) treatment. EW heifers were weaned at 107±3 days of age and provided access to a concentrate-based ration ad libitum with limit-fed mixed grass hay. NW heifers remained with their dams until 232±3 days of age, at which point heifers from both treatments were comingled and grazed on mixed summer pasture. Following NW, weekly blood samples were collected from all heifers for progesterone analyses used to determine the onset of puberty. Pelvic and ovarian size was measured before breeding. All heifers were subjected to an estrous synchronization protocol with timed artificial insemination (AI) at 437±4 days of age. During phase 2 of the experiment, a subset of pregnant heifers (n=16) were divided into two replicates and subjected to a glucose tolerance test, epinephrine challenge and progesterone clearance analysis. Neither age nor BW at puberty differed between EW and NW heifers. Likewise, no differences in pelvic area or ovarian size were observed. Thus, it appears that the reproductive maturity of EW and NW heifers was similar. Heifers studied during phase 2 of the experiment were restricted to those that had become pregnant to their first AI. Within this cohort, EW heifers tended to have lower overall circulating progesterone concentrations than those that were NW (P=0.14). Aspects of glucose and insulin dynamics were also altered, as EW heifers tended to have lower baseline glucose concentrations (P=0.10) despite similar baseline insulin concentrations. Compared with NW heifers, EW heifers had lower insulin area under the curve (P<0.05), which was partly the result of a tendency for lower peak insulin concentrations (P=0.11). Results of the glucose tolerance test indicate that a lesser insulin response was necessary to properly clear the glucose in the EW heifers, suggesting enhanced insulin sensitivity. Collectively, these results indicate that EW is not detrimental for the growth or reproductive development of replacement beef heifers, although some differences in glucose and insulin dynamics persist into adulthood.

The effects of nutrition on patterns of live-weight change, hair follicle activity, moult, hormone profiles and associated activities of monodeiodinase enzyme types II and III (MDII and MDIII) in cashmere goats were investigated. From 1 week before the winter solstice (mid December), one group of 15 animals was given a ration designed to provide 2·0 × live weight maintenance requirements (high; H) while a second, similar, group was given 0·8 × live weight maintenance requirements (low; L). After approximately 3 months, L animals had significantly lower mean live weights (P<0·01) than H animals. This was associated with lower (P<0·05) overall mean hair follicle activity in L than H animals during the March to May period and a lower overall mean moult score during March and April in L animals (P<0·01) but a similar mean date of moult onset. Mean concentrations of all of the hormones measured exhibited significant changes (P<0·01) with date of sampling. Overall mean concentrations of insulin, tri-iodothyronine and thyroxine did not differ with treatment but, compared with L animals, H animals exhibited higher mean concentrations of prolactin in April and May (P<0·05) and of insulin-like growth factor-1 in December and January (P<0·001). Rates of activity of MDII and MDIII in skin differed with date (P<0·001) but were not significantly affected by nutritional treatment. The MDIII/MDII ratio differed (P=0·05) with month but was significantly higher (P<0·05) in L than H animals in January, only. It is concluded that the reduction in hair follicle activity and the slower onset of moult associated with reduced nutrition were unlikely to be controlled, directly, by differences in activities of MDII or MDIII in skin tissue.

The histological characteristics of the skin of docked and undocked fat-tailed sheep were studied at 15-day intervals between birth and 90 days of age, then every 30 days until 180 days and every 3 months until 1 year of age. Data presented in this paper were recorded at birth, 30, 60, 120,180 and 360 days of age. The fleece characteristics were studied at 1·0,1·5 and 2·0 years of age.

The skin structure was similar in docked and undocked Rahmani sheep and did not differ from that of other breeds of sheep.

The effect of docking was significant at most ages of the study on internal diameter of primary follicles and on the external and internal diameters of secondary and on average diameters of wool follicles (P < 0·05). The effect of docking was highly significant on each of staple length and wool diameter.

The objects of this investigation were to discover the amount of current inbreeding, the extent of any genetic divergence between the beef and dairy types, and whether the breed was dominated by an élite group of herds as for example, in the British Friesian (Robertson, 1953). An extensive investigation by Sewall Wright (1923a), (1923b) and McPhee and Wright (1925), (1926) established that there was at that time little current inbreeding and that genetic divergence between Dairy and Beef Shorthorns was negligible. This work adds to and corroborates their findings and throws some light on breed structure.

The sampling technique in this investigation is based upon Wright (1925). If consisted of noting the number, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of a randomly selected sample of 128 females registered in Coates’ Herd Book, Vol. 94, 1948. Simple random lines were traced back from each great-grandparent as far as 1900, a toss of a coin deciding whether to record a sire or a dam. The information contained in Coates’ Herd Book made it a simple matter to record in addition the mate of the randomly selected ancestor, thus providing 16 random lines behind the eight great-grandparents.

All female animals of spontaneously ovulating species show a pattern of behaviour at oestrus wrich differs from that of other times of the oestrous cycle, from the time before puberty and from that when the animal is senescent. This pattern is basically the same in all species but differs in detail from one to another. The matter which is of real interest concerning oestrous behaviour is its association with ovulation. This association is important with regard to the determination of the factors which control both oestrus and ovulation. It is also of immediate interest and importance in the domestic animals because fertility depends on the observation of oestrus, and the the relation thereto of ovulation and insemination.

The performance of groups of Holstein-Friesian, Dutch-Friesian and Friesian × Africander heifers in the coastal belt of Mozambique was compared over a 3-year period. The three groups of heifers were kept together under a reasonable level of management and feeding, and measurements were made of age at first calving, milk yield, days i n production, milkability, udder wearability, mastitis incidence, calving difficulties, reproductive efficiency, disease incidence, parasitic resistance and mortality.

The highest milk production was obtained with the Holstein-Friesians followed by the Dutch-Friesians. Last came the Friesian × Africander which also showed older age at first calving, poorer milkability, fewer days in production and more udder wear. No significant differences were found in calving difficulties, disease incidence, parasitic resistance, mastitis incidence and mortality. The fertility level was relatively low in all groups.

The results corroborate reports made by several workers that acclimatized European breeds can produce milk efficiently in the not-too-harsh areas of the tropics and sub-tropics if they are properly managed and fed. The main problem seems to be the relatively low fertility rates that are common in these areas regardless of breed.

Two experiments were conducted to compare the response oflactating cows to supplementary light in their lying area during increasing and decreasing natural daylength. During decreasing daylength, supplementary light in the lying area increased the time cows spent lying down and considerably reduced calculated food intake, milk production, live weight and body condition, so that lights were installed in the feeding area for the last half of the experiment, which partially restored intake and live weight. Plasma cortisol concentrations and milk somatic cell counts were increased by supplementary light in decreasing daylength before, but not after, lights were installed in the feeding passage, suggesting that cows may have been stressed by the difficulties encountered during feeding in the dark. During increasing daylength supplementary light did not affect lying time, had less effect on food intake and no effect on milk production or live weight. There was a small reduction in plasma corticosteroid by the end of the experiment with supplementary light. It is concluded that providing supplementary light only in the lying area of dairy cows will have adverse effects on their production and welfare in decreasing, but not increasing daylength

The silver fox is an extreme seasonal breeder with one reproductive season during the year. Males are sexually mature at the age of 9 to 10 months. In the present study reproductive function in yearling and adult silver fox males before and during the reproductive period was examined. The aim was to determine the age-dependent features of their reproductive system. It was found that yearling males mate with a smaller number of females and that their first mating period is shorter compared with adult foxes. A high proportion of yearling males did not mate at all (27%) or their sexual activity was reduced (26%), although the number of pups horn from mating males was normal. During the peak of male sexual activity, the number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate was lower in yearling compared with adult males. However, there was no difference in the number of abnormal forms of spermatozoa between the two groups. There was no significant difference in sperm numbers between sexually active and inactive yearlings. Before the reproductive season, yearling males did not differ from adults in plasma concentration of testosterone, while body and testes weights and level of oestradiol were lower. At the end of the breeding season, yearlings did not differ from adults in any trait. It is concluded that the reproductive capacity of yearling male foxes might he immature before the first breeding seasons but that this immaturity did not decrease their reproductive success.

A study was conducted at the Asella Station in the Arsi Region of Ethiopia to investigate the dairy performance of indigenous purebred Arsi and Friesian × Arsi crosses under different pre-partum and post-partum supplementary feeding regimes. A total of’343 first-lactation animals were involved in the experiment. Lactation performance was not significantly affected by pre-partum supplementation. Post-partum supplementary feeding significantly affected total lactation milk and butterfat yields of the crosses but not the purebred Arsi. Arsi crosses produced more milk (1873 (s.e. 65·1) v. 258 (s.e. 31·7) kg) and butterfat (92 (s.e. 4·0) v. 25 (s.e. 2·8) kg) than purebred Arsi. The crosses stayed in lactation longer (474 (s.e. 13·0) v. 179 (s.e. 15·4) days) than the latter. Purebred Arsi manifested much more variation in total lactation milk yield (CV: 1·27 v. 0·37), lactation length (0·91 v. 0·30) and butterfat yield (0·71 v. 0·42) than Arsi crosses. F1 crosses produced slightly more milk (+266 kg) and butterfat (+19·3 kg) but had shorter (-30 days) lactations than the backerosses.

Plane of nutrition (PN) offered to ewe replacements during the rearing phase (8 to 17 months) affects BW at joining and may affect reproductive performance when joined at ~19 months. The effects of PN offered to ewe replacements during their first winter (winter_1) and second summer (summer_2) were evaluated over 3 consecutive years, using 287 spring-born ewe lambs, representing four genotypes (Belclare (Bel), Charmoise×Scottish Blackface (C×SBF), Bel×SBF (Bel×SBF), Bel×SBF that were heterozygous either FecGH or FecXG mutations that increase ovulation rate (OR) (BelMG×SBF)). During extended (deferred) grazing in winter_1 (November to March) the lambs were offered herbage DM allowances (HA) of 0.75 (L) or 1.75 (H) kg/day. During summer_2 (March to August) the replacements were set stocked to maintain sward heights of 4 (L) or 6 (H) cm, thus yielding a 2×2 factorial design for the nutrition treatments (71 to 73 animals/treatment). Increasing HA during winter_1, and residual sward height during summer_2, increased (P<0.001) BW and body size at joining (19 months) but had no effect (P>0.05) on OR. Mean BW at joining was 53.3, 56.8, 56.6 and 61.7 (SEM 0.74) kg for ewes offered the LL, LH, HL and HH treatments, respectively. Mean OR of C×SBF and BelMG×SBF differed (P<0.001) from that of Bel×SBF by −0.58 and +0.47, respectively. Correlations between linear measurements (LMs) of body size and BW at 7, 12 and 17 months were all positive and significant (P<0.001). The precision of the set of LMs as a predictor of BW at joining improved with age (R2 0.46, 0.54 and 0.74 at 7, 12 and 17 months) but BW at a given age was a better predictor at all age time points. Chest girth was the best predictor, among the LMs, of BW at joining and its explanatory power increased with age. Equations developed using LMs at 7, 12 or 17 months, to predict BW at joining exhibited biases of −2.1, −1.5 and +0.9 kg, respectively. It is concluded that whilst altering PN during the rearing phase changed BW by 16% it had no effect on OR. There was no interaction (P>0.05) between the PN offered during winter_1 and summer_2, or PN and ewe genotype for BW at joining or OR. LMs, either at 7, 12 or 17 months of age, are useful predictors of BW at joining.

Thirty-two yearling Friesian steers were used in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment. The treatment variables were source of supplementary nitrogen and physical form of the diet. The diets contained 30% ground barley straw, ground maize, a nitrogen supplement, and minerals and vitamins. Urea was compared with soya bean meal as the nitrogen supplement and both diets were given as cubes or meal. There was no significant difference between treatments in daily live-weight gain, feed intake or commercial carcass acceptability.

Digestibility trials with wethers showed the apparent digestibility of nitrogen and dry matter of the diet containing urea to be significantly lower than that of the diet containing soya bean meal (nitrogen 72·8 ν. 76·3, P < 0·001; dry matter 70·2 ν. 75·3, P < 0·01). The results are discussed in relation to the digestibility of the diets used, the source of supplementary nitrogen and the physical form of the diet.

Aboud et al (1990) found that intake and selection of sorghum stover (i.e. straw) by Ethiopian sheep increased as the ad libitum amounts offered (g/kg mass[M].day[d]) were increased from 25 to 50 and 75. The greater intakes resulted in improved growth rates. In view of the importance of goats in smallholder tropical-agriculture and the fact that goats are considered to be selective feeders, the present experiment compared the response of goats and sheep when offered increasing ad libitum quantities of sorghum stover.

Sorghum (bird-resistant variety Seredo) was grown at Melkassa in the Rift Valley. Fourteen days after hand-harversting of grain in November 1988, stover was hand-cut and transported to the ILCA Station at Debre-Zeit. The stover was chopped (tractor-mounted Alvan Blanch Maxi Chaff Cutter) and stored for one month before feeding. Twenty four Galla bucks (11-13 months old) and twenty four Ethiopian Lowand rams (14-16 months old) were used in the 2 x 3 factorial experiment with 8 replicates.

Factors responsible for breed- and depot-specific differences in the development of lipogenic enzymes, and hence lipogenic capacity of adipocytes, in sheep adipose tissue have been investigated using a serum-free cell culture system. Effects of insulin, tri-iodothyronine and exogenous lipid on the development in vitro of the lipogenic enzymes glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), fatty acid synthetase (FAS), NADP-malate dehydrogenase (ME), glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) in omental and subcutaneous pre-adipocytes from Lacha and Rasa Aragonesa lambs were investigated. Addition of insulin plus tri-iodothyronine caused pre-adipocyte differentiation, which was enhanced by addition of a lipid supplement. G3PDH activities achieved by differentiation of pre-adipocytes in vitro were similar to those found in vivo; furthermore after differentiation in vitro adipocytes from Rasa Aragonesa lambs had a greater G3PDH activity than adipocytes from Lacha lambs, as found in vivo. In contrast activities of FAS, G6PDH and ME achieved by differentiation in vitro were much greater than those found previously in vivo. While breed- and depot-specific changes in G6PDH observed after differentiation in vitro were similar to those observed in vivo, changes in FAS induced in vitro differed from those found during development in vivo. The study shows that pre-adipocytes from Rasa Aragonesa and Lacha lambs have intrinsic depot- and breed-specific differences in their ability to differentiate and express lipogenic enzymes. The combination of insulin, tri-iodothyronine and a lipid supplement appears to be sufficient to account for in vivo G3PDH activities but other factors are required to explain activities of FAS, G6PDH and ME found in vivo.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most widespread source of variation in genomes. While the very large number of SNPs allows for a very precise description of genetic variation, it impedes data processing and significantly increases analysis time. Many of the SNPs located close to each other frequently carry the same or similar information. This problem can be solved by selecting the most informative SNPs (tagSNPs) using linkage disequilibrium information by identifying a set of tagSNPs representative for a chromosome fragment. The goal of this study is to check whether the genetic structure of a population, expressed by relationship and inbreeding coefficients, affects tagSNP selection. Six subsets of 450 bulls are selected out of the 1228 Polish Holstein-Friesian bulls genotyped by the Illumina BovineSNP50 Bead Chip. TagSNPs are selected for each of the subsets, as well as for the whole data set. The average reduction of the SNP number is 77.2% and is very similar in each sub-population. Differences in tagSNP selection between sub-populations are small. On average, 93.88% of the tagSNPs overlap between subsets. The study showed that differences in the genetic structure of the reference population have little influence on tagSNP selection.

Meat yield and quality are closely related to muscle development. The muscle characteristics mainly take place during embryonic and postnatal phases. Thus, genetic control of muscle development in early stages represents a significant stake to improve product quality and production efficiency. In bovine, several programmes have been developed to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting growth, carcass composition or meat quality traits. Such strategy is incontestably very powerful yet extremely cumbersome and costly when dealing with large animals such as ruminants. Furthermore, the fine mapping of the QTL remains a real challenge. Here, we proposed an alternative approach based on chemical mutagenesis in the mouse combined with comparative genomics to identify regions or genes controlling muscle development in cattle. At present, we isolated seven independent mouse lines of high interest. Two lines exhibit a hypermuscular phenotype, and the other five show various skeletomuscular phenotypes. Detailed characterisation of these mouse mutants will give crucial input for the identification and the mapping of genes that control muscular development. Our strategy will provide the opportunity to understand the function and control of genes involved in improvement of animal physiology.

Metabolisable energy (ME) and absorbed protein appear to be more efficiently utilised for tissue gain in ruminants fed cereal compared to forage diets but the mechanisms involved are not understood. Forage and cereal diets differ in their pattern of rumen fermentation and hence the relative proportions of absorbed nutrients such as ammonia (NH3) and VFA (Seal et al, 1991). Splanchnic bed metabolism has been demonstrated to extensively modify both the quantity and form of absorbed nutrients (Reynolds et al, 1991) and therefore is an important site for the regulation of nutrient supply to the peripheral tissues. The present study was thus designed to examine the effect of forage versus cereal diet upon splanchnic nutrient metabolism in growing cattle.

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of the dietary composition of the food they eat, and are demanding that it is labelled effectively. This demand has major implications for the meat industry because meat is a highly variable product and can be processed in many ways. One area currently under review is the methodology used to determine the water added to pig meat during processing (based on the fat-free nitrogen (FFN) content of fresh meat).

This paper reports the second of two experiments which examined the possibility of improving pasture utilisation by restricting grazing and giving cows a supplement of concentrates. Two treatments (A and B) were continuously imposed, each on a group of 10 adult Ayrshire cows, for about 4 months. Cows received either pasture alone allocated daily by electric fence (B), or half this area of pasture plus 3 Ib. cubed concentrates per 10 lb. milk (A).

Herbage intakes were estimated by grass cutting techniques and also by faecal index methods, and animal performance was recorded. Over the whole experiment the two treatments gave similar levels of production per animal. Significant differences in milk yield and live-weight gain were detected only in periods 1 and 4, respectively, when the intended restriction was not completely achieved. While production per acre of grass was doubled by treatment a about 4,000 lb. grain was considered necessary to replace one acre of grazing.

The results are discussed in relation to the previous experiment. They suggest that the method of replacing half the normal grazing with barley or other concentrated feeds could be usefully employed to alleviate pasture shortage in parts of the grazing season and might therefore facilitate the maintenance of a high stocking rate.

The requirements of a weaned piglet are expected to change systematically over the period 6kg-25kg. Commonly during this time animals will be offered two diets. However, initially on each diet the animal may be restricted because it's protein requirements are in excess of that supplied by the diet. Then latterly, amino acids may be oversupplied requiring deamination of the excess by the pig. This is a costly process, in terms of the energy required by the pig and commercially, in terms of food protein costs. This system also does not take into account differing individual requirements within a group of pigs due to genotype, sex, maturity and stage of growth. As a result potential benefits are to be obtained if weaned piglets can be shown to choose an adequate diet, meeting their individual requirements, when given a choice of feeds.

Immunity-related traits are heritable in chicken, therefore, it is possible to improve the inherent immunity by breeding programs. In this study using the Illumina chicken 60K single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) chip, we performed a set of genome-wide association studies to determine candidate genes and loci responsible for primary and secondary antibody-mediated responses against sheep red blood cell. A F2 population descended from a commercial meat-type breed and an Iranian indigenous chicken was used for this study. Statistical analysis was based on a mixed linear model utilizing genomic relationship matrix to prevent spurious associations. Correction for multiple testing was done by applying 5% and 10% chromosomal false discovery rates (FDRs) for significant and suggestive thresholds, respectively. Nine significant and 17 suggestive associated SNPs were identified. Most of the SNPs that were suggestively associated with the primary response of total plasma immunoglobulins were also significantly associated with this trait in secondary response. Three SNPs were located within a narrow region of 23 kb on chromosome 16. Pathway analysis for the genes surrounding the associated SNPs showed that they are involve in antigen processing and presentation, primary immunodeficiency, vitamin digestion and absorption, cell adhesion molecules, phagosome, influenza A, folding, assembly and peptide loading of class I major histocompatibility complex, lipid digestion, mobilization, and transport (FDR < 0.1). Interestingly, there were common regains associated with multiple immune-related traits.
