1. Intake and digestibility were determined in a trial with 30 British Friesian calves given diets containing straw and either 3·2 (H), 2·9 (M) or 2·6 (L) Meal metabolizable energy per kg dry matter. For one series of diets the straw was chopped and the diets were made into cobs (1·0 × 2·5 × 4·0 cm); for a second series the straw was milled and the diets were made into pellets (1·0 × 1·25 cm)

2. Calves given the H diets containing either chopped or ground straw ate and gained less well than calves given M and L diets but there were no differences in feed intake or growth between calves given M and L diets.

3. The retention of feed residues was greater and the flow of fluid out of the rumen was less for cattle offered the H diet than the L diet.

The effects of culling, natural wastage and different correction and exclusion procedures on estimates of lactation parameters have been examined in test station records of 1042 Danish Red cows. A total culling rate of 20% was applied to the initial material, of which 11% represented obligatory culling for disease, injury and infertility and 9% ‘paper’ culling for performance at four different stages of lactation.

Exclusion and correction of short records generally resulted in overestimates of the sample mean and underestimates of the selection differential produced by culling. In all instances, the variance of the sample prior to culling, and the loss of variance attributable to culling, was underestimated in samples containing short or corrected records.

It was concluded that field data cannot provide material suitable for objective studies of selection and that a reappraisal of the effects of age, lactation, season, etc., in the controlled conditions of test stations may well be justified. An absence of culling in test stations contributes to the large estimates of variance and heritability characteristic of station material.

Reducing foregut digesta viscosity is the primary mode of action of feed enzymes in improving performance in broilers fed wheat and barley based diets (Bedford & Classen, 1991, Graham et al, 1992). In pigs, inclusion of appropriate fibre-degrading enzymes can improve the apparent digestion of nutrients in the small intestine (Graham et al, 1988). This has been attributed to both reduced digesta viscosity and an opening up of the feed cell walls enclosing the nutrients. However, the exact mechanism of this effect is unknown. This trial was designed to investigate the influence of enzyme supplementation on gut parameters in the pig.

A total of 40 crossbred pigs were weaned at about 9.5 kg and placed into 5 blocks of 8 individual metabolism cages based on litter origin, sex and liveweight. There were 2 treatment replicates per block. The mash diets were based on barley (751 kg/t), soyabean meal (150 kg/t), fish meal (40 kg/t) and soya oil (20 kg/t), with 1 kg/t chromic oxide as a marker. A hulled, low β-glucan (2.9 % of DM; Arra, Finland) and a naked, high β-glucan (5.3 % of DM; Condor, Canada) barley were used, and diets were fed without or with added /3-glucanase. Pigs were fed for 21 days, then sacrificed. Digesta was collected from the stomach, 4 equal lengths of the small intestine, the caecum and 2 equal sections of the colon plus rectum.

Daily injections of bovine pituitary somatotropin (growth hormone) can markedly increase growth and muscle deposition in fattening lambs, although the optimal dose range for these effects is not known.

This experiment was designed to assess the anabolic and lipolytic activities of biosynthetic somatotropin (produced by genetically-modified bacteria) in fattening lambs, and to determine the effects of dose and method of administration.

Dorset Down x Finn-Dorset lambs were individually penned, fed a barley/soyabean meal diet ad libitum (C.P.=155g/kg DM) and allocated to one of six treatment groups, each containing 5 ewe and 5 wether lambs, such that each group had the same initial mean live weight (18 kg). Between 10 and 21 weeks of age, the lambs of each group received one of the treatments shown in Table 1, comparing 3 doses of somatotropin (0.025, 0.1 or 0.25 mg/kg live weight), dissolved in bicarbonate buffer and injected subcutaneously once each day, with the intermediate dose (0.1 mq/kg/day) given by continuous subcutaneous infusion or by daily subcutaneous injection as a suspension in olive oil.

Six castrated male cattle of 350 kg live weight were used in an incomplete Latin square design to measure intake and digestibility of barley straw offered ad libitum alone and with 5 levels, 1·5 to 7·5 kg/day, of a barley and dried lucerne concentrate. Straw intake declined and total organic-matter intake increased linearly with increasing concentrate level. On average 1 kg additional organic matter as concentrate, increased total organic-matter intake by 0·68 kg. There was no evidence that the crude protein content of the whole diet affected straw consumption.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fasting and exogenous insulin administration on the expression of growth hormone receptor (GHR) and IGF-I mRNA in the pre-ovulatory follicle of ewes. Fifteen ewes received an intravaginal progesterone releasing device that was removed 6 days later (day of removal = day 0). On day −2, the ewes were divided into three groups: (i) fasting group (n = 5) that was fasted from day −2 to day 2; (ii) control group (n = 5) that received a maintenance diet; and (iii) insulin group (n = 5) that received insulin injections (0.25 IU/kg) every 12 h from day −2 to day 2 under the same diet as the control group. Follicular samples were obtained on day 2. Fasting increased plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentrations from day −1 to day 2 (P < 0.001). There was no difference (P > 0.05) in the number of follicles, although there was a tendency for an increase in the pre-ovulatory follicle diameter for the insulin group in comparison to the control group (P = 0.12). Thecal GHR mRNA expression was very low and was considered insignificant. Moreover, granulosa cells GHR mRNA expression increased (P < 0.05) in the insulin group. Expression of IGF-I mRNA was not different among groups in both tissues. In conclusion, insulin administration increases GHR mRNA but not IGF-I mRNA expression in granulosa cells of the pre-ovulatory follicle. However, fasting did not change the pattern of GHR/IGF-I mRNA expression in the pre-ovulatory follicle.

1. 768 lambs on fourteen farms in the north-east of Scotland were divided into a control group and groups receiving two 5 mg., three 5 mg., two 7·5 mg., and one 15 mg. pellet of hexoestrol.

2. On every farm the mean rate of live-weight gain of the treated lambs was greater than that of the controls.

3. There appeared to be very little difference between implantations of two 5 mg., three 5 mg. and two 7·5 mg. pellets of hexoestrol but on four farms where a direct comparison was made one 15 mg. pellet was slightly inferior to three 5 mg. pellets.

In a previous experiment (Barbi, Owen & Theodorou, 1993) effluent fluid from the in vitro rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC - Czerkawski & Breckenridge, 1977) was used as a source of inoculum when fermenting forage in the Pressure Transducer Technique (PTT - Theodorou, Williams, Brooks, Dhanoa, McAllan & Gill, 1993). The main objective was to replace rumen fistulated animals for assessing the fermentation kinetics of forages. However, low microbial activity in RUSITEC effluent-fluid affected the results, such that fermentation profiles were lower than those in controls inoculated with rumen liquor (Barbi et al, 1993).

In the present study, in an attempt to increase the microbial cellulolytic activity in the effluent fluid, we altered the particle size and increased the amount of substrate added daily to the RUSITEC vessels. Two particle sizes were examined in an attempt to enhance microbial activity and growth by increasing the availability of colonization surfaces.

Energy evaluation systems translate an animal’s net energy (NE) requirements into feed metabolisable energy requirements (MER). The Feed into Milk (FiM) project (Agnew RE, Yan T, France J, Kebreab E and Thomas C 2004. Energy requirement and supply. In Feed into Milk. A new applied feeding system for dairy cows (ed. C Thomas), pp. 11–20. Nottingham University Press, Nottingham, UK) proposed a new system to predict MER of dairy cows that is, in contrast to previous energy evaluation systems for cattle, independent of feed quality. The FiM system shares this characteristic with an energy evaluation system for ad libitum-fed cattle proposed in 1994 by Tolkamp and Ketelaars (T&K). The FiM system requires nine parameters to translate requirements for NE into MER for dairy cows, while the T&K system for cattle requires only two for the same purpose. This paper analyses the contribution of each of the parameters to the final MER predictions, the differences in MER prediction between the two systems and the underlying causes of these differences. The systems differ considerably in their estimates of the NE that is required for maintenance and in their (implicit) assumptions about the partial efficiency of ME utilisation for lactation. The T&K system is based on a constant partial efficiency of ME utilisation, but in the FiM system this efficiency changes with milk yield (MY) and shows a sharp discontinuity that is at odds with the underlying biology. These are the two main causes of the differences in MER predictions. Nevertheless, over a range of MYs between 10 and 40 kg, and for cows maintaining, gaining or losing weight, the MER predictions of the two systems are very similar with maximum differences of up to ±2% only. FiM predictions of MER are systematically higher than T&K predictions for cows with very low and very high MY. It is concluded that the FiM system could reduce parameter requirements with negligible effects on MER predictions. The combination of a very high maintenance NE parameter and a curvilinear model with two subsequent corrections leads to internal inconsistencies in the FiM system. The T&K system is much simpler but it might benefit from including more recent information for the estimation of its parameters.

This research investigated two sources of sire-specific genetic effects on the birth weight (BWT) and weaning weight (WWT) of Bruna dels Pirineus beef calves. More specifically, we focused on the influence of genes located in the non-autosomal region of the Y chromosome and the contribution of paternal imprinting. Our analyses were performed on 8130 BWT and 1245 WWT records from 12 and 2 purebred herds, respectively, they being collected between years 1986 and 2010. All animals included in the study were registered in the Yield Recording Scheme of the Bruna dels Pirineus breed. Both BWT and WWT were analyzed using a univariate linear animal model, and the relevance of paternal imprinting and Y chromosome-linked effects were checked by the deviance information criterion (DIC). In addition to sire-specific and direct genetic effects, our model accounted for random permanent effects (dam and herd-year-season) and three systematic sources of variation, that is, sex of the calf (male or female), age of the dam at calving (six levels) and birth type (single or twin). Both weight traits evidenced remarkable effects from the Y chromosome, whereas paternal imprinting was only revealed in WWT. Note that differences in DIC between the preferred model and the remaining ones exceed 39 000 and 2 800 000 DIC units for BWT and WWT, respectively. It is important to highlight that Y chromosome accounted for ∼2% and ∼6% of the total phenotypic variance for BWT and WWT, respectively, and paternal imprinting accounted for ∼13% of the phenotypic variance for WWT. These results revealed two relevant sources of sire-specific genetic variability with potential contributions to the current breeding scheme of the Bruna dels Pirineus beef cattle breed; moreover, these sire-specific effects could be included in other beef cattle breeding programs or, at least, they must be considered and appropriately analyzed.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of diet on fur colour and quality of bromocriptineand melatonin-induced winter pelage in mink. At weaning, 90 standard dark female kit mink were assigned randomly to one of two dietary regimens. Diet 1 (no. = 30) was a basal ranch mink diet, and diet 2 (no. = 60) was the basal diet, supplemented with liver and eggs. On 26 June 1986, mink given each diet were assigned to treatment (no. = 15) and control groups (no. = 15). Animals receiving diet 1 were treated with 120 mg melatonin implants (silastic) while those given diet 2 were treated with 120 mg melatonin implants, 60 mg bromocriptine pellets, or 60 mg bromocriptine pellets plus 18·6 mg melatonin implants (silastic). Control groups on each diet received no implants. Subsequently, fur growth was measured at biweekly intervals. Mink treated with 120 mg melatonin, 60 mg bromocriptine, and 60 mg bromocriptine plus 18·6 mg melatonin all moulted 1 month earlier than controls and exhibited significantly greater fur growth during the months of August and September (P < 0·05). Mink implanted with 120 mg melatonin, and bromocriptine plus melatonin were considered to be in fully prime pelage by mid October and were pelted by October 23. Mink receiving bromocriptine alone were not considered to be in prime pelage in October and were pelted in December with controls. Neither diet supplementation with liver and eggs, nor treatment to induce early fur growth had an effect on fur colour or quality. It was also concluded that treatment of mink with bromocriptine may not completely mimic the effect of exogenous melatonin on winter fur growth.

The in sacco degradability technique (Paine, Crawshaw and Barber (1982)) is a useful method to evaluate the dry matter and nitrogen degradation characteristics of a forage in the rumen. Little information is available on the DM and N degradability of whole crop wheat. In a previous paper substantial variations in the nutritive composition of fermented and urea treated whole crop wheat forages were observed with increasing crop maturity. These variations were ascribed to changes in botanical composition of the forage with increasing maturity, for example the increasing contribution of grain in the dry matter elevated the starch content of the forage (Hill and Leaver (1991)). Givens, Moss and Adamson (1993) stated that whole crop cereals comprised of a cell wall rich straw fraction and a starch rich grain fraction. Therefore it could be suggested that variation in the relative proportions of these fractions would influence the fractional rate of degradation of the forage. Evidence to support this hypothesis was presented in Givens, Moss, Adamson and Reeve (1992) by incubating each fraction individually. The experiment reported was designed to compare the effect of stage of crop maturity, ensiling and urea treatment on the degradability of DM and N of whole crop wheat forages incubated as a total forage.

An autumn sown crop of wheat (var. fortress) was cut at three stages of maturity being; growth stage 49 (boot), 71 (early milk) and 89 (hard dough) and three treatments were applied to the harvested forage. The treatments were fresh forage as harvested, ensiled and urea treatment with 40 kg/tonne DM. Six mature sheep (mean liveweight 76.9 kg), each fitted with a rumen cannula were used in the degradation trial.

The nitrogen fixing and nutritional benefits of including white clover in a pasture are well documented. However, where attempts have been made to increase herbage yield by the application of fertilizer nitrogen, only the grass component of the mixture is stimulated. The white clover is placed at a competitive disadvantage for other aspects of the environment, especially light, and is adversely affected.

In many practical grazing systems, where defoliation is continuous rather than intermittent, it might be possible to maintain the crop canopy at a level where shading is unimportant. Similarly, if modest amounts of fertilizer nitrogen are applied when clover is least likely to be affected, the adverse effects may be minimized. Thus, the objectives of this study are to examine the extent to which fertilizer nitrogen can be used to improve animal production from a grass/clover sward by increasing herbage production whilst maintaining an effective clover population.

Three changeover experiments, each with 16 milking cows, were conducted to evaluate the effects of stage of growth of lucerne, level of feeding of lucerne or ryegrass and level of inclusion of barley. The artificially dried and processed forages were in the form of cobs and given to cows in addition to a basal ration of hay. Late-cut lucerne (organic matter digestibility, OMD, 55%) promoted significantly lower milk yields than early-cut lucerne (68% OMD). When offered ad libitum in two meals each day both forages were eaten in quantities of about 13 kg dry matter. Ryegrass cobs (79% OMD) produced more milk than lucerne cobs (59% OMD) but gave similar milk yields per unit of digestible organic matter. Production rations supplying similar amounts of digestible organic matter and composed of different proportions of lucerne cobs and rolled barley gave similar milk yields. It is concluded that the relative milk-producing value of processed forages depends on their content of digestible organic matter. However, their bulk may limit their value and the inclusion of cereal with the dried forage may be worth while.

Lambs were fed diets in which peat replaced equivalent alfalfa hay. Gains were depressed by proportionately 0·14, 0·32 and 0·56 due to 100, 200 and 300 g peat per kg, respectively, during a 63-day feeding period. Lambs fed peat required more dry matter per unit gain. Necropsy examination of heart, kidney, liver, spleen, lung, and pancreas revealed no gross abnormalities from feeding of peat. Rib eye area was reduced at 200 and 300 g dietary peat per kg. There were no differences in taste of cooked loin sections due to peat. These studies support the safety of feeding peat for use as a dietary carrier at 20 to 30 glkg diet or as a dietary diluent at higher levels.

Holstein-Friesian male calves, aged 160 to 450 days, and of live weight 180 to 530 kg, were used to determine the effects of dietary nitrogen level and dietary nitrogen source on performance. Experiment 1, tested dietary nitrogen level, and involved two trials with three dietary-nitrogen levels and equal dietary metabolizable energy (ME) 11·7 MJ/kg dry matter (DM). The crude protein (CP) level was reduced in the course of the trials by 40 g/kg, the experimental average CP in the diets being 146, 126 and 106 g/kg for the high (HP), medium (MP) and the low protein (LP) diets, respectively. The urea space (US) for estimation of body protein deposition and the rumen volume for calculation of empty body weight were measured in trial A of experiment 1. Experiment 2 involved four diets of equal ME concentrations; (11-7 MJ/kg DM), in three of which the CP contents were equal but from different sources: (a) 110 g/kg, all of it true protein (TP), negative control; (b) 130 g/kg, all of it TP; (с) 130 g/kg CP, 20 g/kg of it is poultry litter (PL) protein; (d) 130 g/kg CP, 40 g/kg of it is PL protein. Significantly lower US and ratio of US to live weight were found in the calves on the LP diet, from the age of 265 days than in the calves on the other diets. The ratio of US to live weight significantly decreased with increasing age in all protein level treatments. Until the age of 300 days the rumen volume was significantly higher on the LP diet than on the other diets. Calves on the HP diet had the highest daily gain and carcass gain. The recommendation to reduce the dietary protein as age increased to lower than 120 g/kg caused a reduction in the energy retained from the diet but protein deposition was not impaired. Protein deposition was impaired when the CP was reduced by 20 g/kg below the level recommended by the National Research Council. The inclusion of poultry litter in the diet, with ME concentration being maintained, did not reduce the rate of live-weight gain, and improved food conversion efficiency.

Forty-one Texel and Texel-Oxford sires were selected over 5 years (1978-82) on high and low adjusted 100-day weight from 174 ram lambs artificially reared from birth and performance tested. The correlated responses to selection were measured in 1103 crossbred progeny, out of an experimental group of crossbred ewes, the progeny being naturally reared in field conditions. Hierarchical analysis of variance was performed, fitting the usual fixed effects and interactions. Co-heritabilities (rAh2h2; rA is the genetic correlation between traits with heritabilities h12 and h22) were estimated from offspring-parent regression and from the realized responses to selection. The selection differentials achieved (1·70 standard deviations in 100-day weight between high- and low-weight sires) were lower than expected, due to mating difficulties, mortality and other requirements for the stock. The co-heritabilities for growth traits were generally positive but small (mean 0·08; s.e. 0·08). Though not statistically significant, lambs slaughtered at a fixed weight from the high-weight rams were slaughtered earlier with lighter and leaner carcasses, as expected. Similarly, lambs slaughtered according to fat cover from high-weight rams were slaughtered later with heavier slaughter and carcass weights. Generally, the co-heritabilities for carcass traits were not significantly different from zero for either slaughter group. On the basis of these results, selection on ram 100-day weight with artificial rearing may not offer any advantage over natural rearing in the improvement of lamb growth and carcass traits.

Mineral requirements of pregnant dairy goats are still not well defined; therefore, we investigated the net Ca, P, Mg, Na and K requirements for pregnancy and for maintenance during pregnancy in two separate experiments. Experiment 1 was performed to estimate the net Ca, P, Mg, Na and K requirements in goats carrying single or twin fetuses from 50 to 140 days of pregnancy (DOP). The net mineral requirements for pregnancy were determined by measuring mineral deposition in gravid uterus and mammary gland after comparative slaughter. In total, 57 dairy goats of two breeds (Oberhasli or Saanen), in their third or fourth parturition, were randomly assigned to groups based on litter size (single or twin) and day of slaughter (50, 80, 110 and 140 DOP) in a fully factorial design. Net mineral accretion for pregnancy did not differ by goat breed. The total daily Ca, P, Mg, Na and K requirements for pregnancy were greatest in goats carrying twins (P<0.05), and the requirements increased as pregnancy progressed. Experiment 2 was performed to estimate net Ca, P, Mg, Na and K requirements for dairy goat maintenance during pregnancy. In total, 58 dairy goats (Oberhasli and Saanen) carrying twin fetuses were assigned to groups based on slaughter day (80, 110 and 140 DOP) and feed restriction (ad libitum, 20% and 40% feed restriction) in a randomized block design. The net Ca, P and Mg requirements for maintenance did not vary by breed or over the course of pregnancy. The daily net requirements of Ca, P and Mg for maintenance were 60.4, 31.1 and 2.42 mg/kg live BW (LBW), respectively. The daily net Na requirement for maintenance was greater in Saanen goats (11.8 mg/kg LBW) than in Oberhasli goats (8.96 mg/kg LBW; P<0.05). Daily net K requirements increased as pregnancy progressed from 8.73 to 15.4 mg/kg LBW (P<0.01). The findings of this study will guide design of diets with adequate mineral content for pregnant goats throughout their pregnancy.

This study examined the comminution of fresh herbage, subsequent nutrient release, and the characteristics of swallowed boli from three physically and chemically contrasting forages during ingestive mastication by dairy cows. The extent and pattern of nutrient release will determine their availability to rumen microflora, and potentially influence their efficiency of use. The forages evaluated were perennial ryegrass (ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., cv Alto AR37), lucerne (Medicago sativa L., cv Torlesse) and chicory (Cichorium intybus L., cv Choice). Experimental design was a 3×3 cross-over with three forages and three consecutive 1-day measurement periods, conducted twice. Six non-lactating, pregnant, multiparous Holstein-Friesian×Jersey cows (Bos taurus) were used, with the first cross-over applied to three mature (10.1±0.61 years old; BW 631±64 kg) cows, and the second to three young (4.8±0.02 years; BW 505±19 kg) cows. Fresh cut forage was offered to the cows following partial rumen evacuation. Swallowed boli were collected directly at the cardia at the commencement, middle and end of the first feeding bout of the first meal of the day. Forage species did not affect the fresh weight of ingested boli (mean 169 g, P=0.605) but the proportion of saliva in boli varied between forage. Boli of chicory contained the greatest amount of herbage material and least amount of saliva, whereas ryegrass boli were the opposite. Boli fresh weight tended to increase as time in the meal progressed, but the age of the cow was not shown to affect any boli characteristics or nutrient release. Particle size reduction was affected by forage, with 31%, 38% and 35% of chicory, lucerne and ryegrass herbage reduced to <2 mm. There was little evidence of relationship between comminution and any physical or chemical characteristic of the forage, except in ryegrass where extent of comminution was moderately correlated with herbage strength. Proportional release of herbage soluble carbohydrate exceeded that of N during mastication. Differences in loss of N were moderately correlated with the amount of N in the herbage (R2=0.53) but herbage comminution was not strongly correlated with release of either N or carbohydrate. These findings illustrate the complex animal×forage interactions that occur during mastication, and that it is not possible to infer nutrient loss from herbage based on herbage characteristics as the driver for this differ between species.
