Reorientation of individual crystal-glide planes as isotropic surface ice is deformed during its passage to depth in an ice sheet, lattice rotation, creates a fabric and associated anisotropy. A simple macroscopic description is that these material glide planes are rotated towards planes normal to an axis of compression, and away from planes normal to an axis of extension, inducing an instantaneous orthotropic viscous response with reflexional symmetries in the planes orthogonal to the current principal stretch axes. An orthotropic viscous law is presented for the strain rate expressed in terms of the deviatoric stress, the deformation, and three structure tensors based on the principal stretch axes. This anisotropic relation is expressed in terms of a single fabric response function in addition to the isotropic ice viscosity. The predicted responses in uniaxial compression and simple shear are determined. While the uniaxial response yields an explicit relation between the axial strain rate and stress, it is found that the shear response is governed by three, complicated, coupled relations between the shear strain rate and three deviatoricstress components. The new result derived here is the solution of this system: an explicit relation between the shear strain rate and shear stress. Correlation of these relations with idealized uniaxial and shear responses is then used to determine the required fabric function in the model law.

Summer melt is a primary source of mass loss on the Greenland ice sheet. An understanding of melt processes on the ice sheet, their connection with atmospheric processes, and the redistribution of meltwater is important for ascertaining the mass balance of the ice sheet. High-resolution radar measurements made in the percolation zone of the Greenland ice sheet reveal the evolving radar signature of summer surface melting and subsequent refreezing of meltwater. A traverse over the snow surface has resulted in the first radar map of snow stratigraphy over an extended distance. The dominant sources of back-scatter in the study area are the snow surface and effectively continuous annual ice layers. We suggest applications of our results to help define the extent of the percolation zone and to discriminate between regions where surface melt is lost to the sea and those where melt refreezes nearly in place.

Glen’s flow law is a well-established general law for steady-state glacier ice deformation, and many laboratory tests and field measurements have been undertaken which have shown the generality of the law to be correct. In Nature, ice deformation is the response of the glacier/ice sheet to the applied self-weight stress of the ice mass (i.e. ice thickness, gravity and ice density) which produces a stress gradient within the ice column. Detailed experimental analyses of ice samples in the laboratory have until now only been undertaken using uniform stress fields in uniaxial or triaxial tests. Obviously the best method for investigating ice in the laboratory would be if stress gradients similar to those found in Nature could be replicated. In the following paper we describe the physical modelling of two (laboratory-prepared) isotropic, polycrystalline ice models (0.75 × 0.25 × 0.18 m) at enhanced gravity levels (80g) in a geotechnical beam centrifuge. Steel plate was placed on top of the ice model, replicating an overburden of approximately 36 m of ice (at 80g). Thus we were able to model the deformation of the lower 14 m of an ice mass approximately 50 m thick. Models are confined laterally by the Perspex strongbox walls, preventing lateral extension within the sample during testing. Models are unconfined on their downslope ends, rendering longitudinal stresses negligible. Deformation can therefore be treated as simple shear. Samples are instrumented with displacement markers and thermocouples. Values for A and n in the flow law derived from the experiments are reasonable and indicate the potential of this method for ice-deformation studies.

Thermal convection is observed in snow and in a compact of water-saturated glass beads. While uncertainty in the permeability of the snow limits our ability to compare the observed and calculated onset of convection, agreement between the observed and calculated effects of convection on heat transfer in snow is good. Experimental results with glass beads agree with both the calculated onset of and heat transfer by convection. Attempts are made to assess the effects of convection on snow metamorphism. While much is still uncertain about the significance of thermal convection in snow, it is clear that the phenomenon does occur.

We combine radio-echo sounding ice thickness data from the BEDMAP Project database and the PCMEGA (Prince Charles Mountains Expedition of Germany and Australia) dataset to generate a new ice thickness grid for the southern limit region of the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica. We then reassess the mass balance of the central portion of the Lambert-Amery system, incorporating flow information derived from synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) and a modeled surface mass-balance dataset based on regional atmospheric modeling. Our analysis reveals that Mellor and Fisher Glaciers are approximately in balance to the level of our measurement uncertainty, while Lambert Glacier has a positive imbalance of 4.2 ±2.3 Gta1. The mass budget for the whole Lambert Glacier basin is approximately in balance, and the average basal melt rate in the downstream section of the ice shelf is 5.1 ± 3.0 m a-1. Our results differ substantially from other recent estimates using hydrostatically derived ice thickness data.

A global coupled atmosphere-ocean-ice model is used to examine the interdependence among several components of the hydrologic cycle in the Arctic Ocean, including river discharge, sea-ice cover, and the flow of sea ice through Fram Strait. Since the ocean model has a free surface, fresh-water inflow from rivers is added directly to the ocean. The timing of the peak spring river flow depends on snowmelt runoff and its subsequent routing through the river system. Thermodynamic sea ice is included, and a new sea-iee advection scheme is described. The model’s river discharge affects salinity at the mouth of large rivers. The effect of the river discharge on sea-ice cover is not clear, either locally or at the basin scale. There is significant inter-annual variability of ice flow through Fram Strait, but the model’s flow is about half of that observed. The anomalous ice flow through Fram Strait is most highly correlated with the meridional wind stress. Potential implications for the “great salinity” anomaly are discussed.

A system for predicting avalanche hazard in the windy climate of Vestfirðir, northwest Iceland, is presented. The system is based on (a) numerical simulations of the snowpack and evaluation of avalanche hazard due to overloading by the snow models SAFRAN–Crocus and MÉPRA, and (b) observations of wind speed in the mountains used as a proxy for snowdrift. The system was tested during two winter seasons and correctly predicts 30 out of 35 avalanche days. The 5 missing days feature either large spatial gradients in precipitation or very strong winds a few days before the avalanches, indicating much snowdrift. A comparison of the simulated avalanche hazard and observations of avalanches confirms that snowdrift is of primary importance not only for large avalanches, as already established, but also for small and medium-size avalanches in Vestfirðir. The system is a first step towards an objective evaluation of avalanche hazard in Iceland.

Twelve years of observation at Austre Okstindbreen, Norway, have demonstrated that the drainage systems of glaciers change with time, both between and within seasons. Random events indicative of instability have been recorded, and disruption of the glacier systems has preceded some outbursts from Kalvtjørna, the glacier-dammed lake. The results of dye-tracer tests suggest that, although discrete systems exist within the glacier, these vary between years. They also demonstrate that some of the water entering the glacier is stored temporarily as the capacities of the systems change. The chemical composition of river water emerging from Austre Okstindbreen differs from year to year, and it is found that both systematic patterns of variation and random deviations from them occur. Although waters of different origin mix within drainage systems, not all systematic patterns of isotopie composition are eliminated by this mixture; diurnal variations are superimposed on longer-term trends, which sheds light on drainage conditions. Between-year differences of within-season trends probably reflect changing spatial patterns of drainage. The general level of oxygen-isotope (δ18O) values of bulk glacier river water in a particular summer is much lower than the values of δ18O for old snow and glacier ice, and indicates the relative contribution of the base-flow component, which may be sustained either by accumulation-area sources or by water release from storage.

All sources of cartographic, aerial photographic, satellite image, and related data, from the 18th century to the present, for the eight geographic groups of Iceland’s glaciers, were evaluated for use in preparing a preliminary inventory of Iceland’s glaciers, based on information requirements of the Temporary Technical Secretariat for World Glacier Inventory. On the basis of an evaluation of all sources of historic and modern data for the Langjökull Group, the 1:50 000 scale U.S. Army Map Service Series C762 maps of Iceland were determined to be the best maps from which to derive information for a preliminary inventory, as long as the limitations of these maps are considered and accommodated. The fluctuations of Langjökull’s principal outlet glaciers on maps and Landsat images were found to be consistent with field observations at the International Hydrological Decade monitoring stations. Accumulation area ratios were calculated from late summer snow lines on 1973 Landsat images of Vatnajökull (0.70), Langjökull (0.78), and Mýrdalsjökull (0.35), Measurements of the area of the now stagnant glacier on Ok showed a rapid reduction in area (68 per cent) between 1910 and 1960, but a decline in rate of wastage since 1960 (73 per cent between 1910 and 1978). From 1910 and 1945 topographic maps, the volume of the glacier on Ok was found to be reduced by 0.62 km3.

Radar altimeter data from Seasal (1978), Geosat (1985-88) and ERS-1 (1991—93) are employed to estimate multi-year mean changes of the surface height throughout a region on the East Antarctic ice sheet (EAIS) extending to 72.1° S, the southernmost limit of coverage for Seasat and Geosat altimetry, and above 1500 m elevation, using orbit crossover analysis. The changes are estimated on a same-season (austral late-winter (ALW) toALW) basis, where ALW is the 10 July 9 October time-frame of the Seasat altimetry. Altimeter data corrected for slope-induced errors are used. Altimeter data not corrected for slope-induced errors are also used, for comparison. Intersatellite orbit bias, combined with the effect of other radial errors such as instrumental bias, is estimated using crossover differences on the offshore ALW sea ice, which is employed as a geoid-parallcl reference surface. If similar intersatellite radial biases are characteristic of the continental Antarctic ice-sheet altimetry to 72.1° S, the results of all crossover analyses adjusted for this intersatellite bias — suggest that the mean rate-of-change of the surface height between Seasat and Geosat for ALWs 1978 to 1986-88 was with in the range +11 to -11 mm a−1. The bias-adjusted results of all crossover analyses between Seasat and ERS-1 suggest that the mean rate-of-change of the surface height between ALWs 1978 and 1991-93 was with in the range-17 to-55mma−1 (maximum intersatellitc bias estimate) or 0 to -40 mm a−1 (minimum bias estimate), suggesting that the surface may have lowered slightly during this time interval. The inconsistency of the adjusted Seasat to Geosat vs Seasat to ERS-1 results, however, may be an indication that orbits more accurate than JGM-2 are needed for estimation of regional multi-year mean changes of elevation on the EAIS. Alternatively, it may be a reflection of the differing orbit inclinations of Seasal and ERS-1.

When structures such as oil drilling rigs are constructed on or through the ice plate in coastal and offshore regions, the shear strength of sea ice must be estimated to determine the loading on these structures. Testing methods for shear strength must be established so that shear strength of sea ice in various conditions can be determined.

The authors have been conducting, for five years, direct shear strength experiments using sea ice samples from the Okhotsk Sea coast. Physical characteristics of sea ice, including shear strength, depend to a great extent on such properties as salinity, porosity, grain size, etc; thus, there is variation in the test results of five years experimentation since the samples obtained varied from year to year.

The following conclusions were drawn from this experiment:

• i) Under certain conditions the relation between shear strength and vertical stress can be represented by Coulomb’s equation of soil; ie, where Ts: shear strength, C* : apparent cohesion (shear strength at σv σv = 0), φ*: angle of internal friction, σv : vertical stress

• ii) The shear strength of sea ice increases, approaching a constant, with decreasing ice temperature.

• iii) The shear strength decreases with increasing ice shear area; an analogous relation exists in concrete.

• iv) The shear strength is not greatly dependent on either the shear velocity or stress rate.

• v) The shear strength is greater and generally increases more rapidly with decreasing ice temperatures in planes perpendicular to the ice growth direction than in planes parallel to it.

• vi) Two types of failure occurred in the sea ice samples. In the case of (sample diameter)/(sample length) less than 2 , the failure was induced by shear only. With d/l>2, the failure was not solely caused by shear since the existence of a small gap between the ice sample and shear box introduced a bending moment.

GPS measurements of tidal modulation of ice flow and seismicity within the grounding zone of Beardmore Glacier show that tidally induced fluctuations of horizontal flow are largest near the grounding line and decrease downstream. Seismic activity is continuous, but peaks occur on falling and rising tides. Beamforming methods reveal that most seismic events originate from two distinct locations, one on the grid-north side of the grounding zone, and one on the grid-south side. The broad pattern of deformation generated as Beardmore Glacier merges with the Ross Ice Shelf results in net extension along the grid-north side of the grounding zone and net compression along the grid-south side. During falling tides, seismic activity peaks on both sides because of increased vertical flexure across the grounding line. During rising tides, seismic activity in the region of extension on the grid-north side is relatively low because the tidal influence on both horizontal strain rate and vertical flexure is small. On the grid-south side during rising tides, however, tidally induced horizontal strain rates promote increased seismicity in regions of long-term compressional flow paths. Our study highlights how concurrent geodetic and seismic measurements provide insight into grounding-zone mechanics and their influence on ice-shelf buttressing.

Mean oxygen-isotope ratio values relative to standard mean ocean water (δ18 O, in ‰) reported for 406 sites in Antarctica are compiled together with data on mean annual surface temperature, latitude, surface elevation, and mean annual shortest distance to open ocean denoted by the 20% sea-ice concentration boundary. Stepwise regression analyses with δ18O as the dependent variable are used as a model-building procedure based on statistical, rather than physical, criteria. Multivariate models sensitive to covariation between independent variables are defined using the whole dataset (N406 where N denotes the number of sites), as well as sub-sets for areas of conterminous grounded ice (N206) and ice shell (N110). The models show improvement over bivariate regression models. Distance to the open ocean enters all models at the second step. Inversions of the set and sub-set models applied to a database for 1351 gridpoint locations 100 km apart (it excludes the regions of Graham Land and eastern Palmer Land) are used to produce contoured distributions of δ18O. These may be used to assess the effects of atmospheric advection, as well as derive ice-flow adjustments for δ18O series obtained from deep-core or ablation-zone samples. Suggestions are made to improve model reliability.

New categories for the climatic division of snowy areas according to their snow-cover character in mid-winter are proposed. They are a wet-snow region, a dry-snow region, an intermediate snow region and a depth-hoar region. The wet-snow region is defined as the region in which every layer of deposited snow is wet due to percolation of snowmelt water throughout the winter. In contrast, areas in which the snow cover is dry, at least in the coldest period of the winter season, are classified into two categories, that is the dry-snow region and the depth-hoar region. In the latter region, the small snow depth and low air temperature induce development of depth hoar. The intermediate snow region was introduced to indicate an intermediate character between the dry-snow and wet-snow regions. From the climatic dataset calculated by the Japanese Meteorological Agency and from snow surveys, it has been found that in snowy areas, which have a climatic monthly mean temperature in January (Tjan) higher than 0.3°C, snow would be expected to be wet throughout the winter and, in areas that have Tjan, lower than −1.1°C, to be dry at least in the coldest period. Snow covers, where Tjan is between these two values, are expected to have intermediate characters. Therefore, these temperatures are supposed to be critical values among the wet, dry and intermediate snow regions. The criterion that separates the depth-hoar region from the dry-snow areas was found to be given by a climatic mean temperature gradient. This value lies between 10 and 12°Cm−1, which is derived by dividing the absolute value of the average of the climatic monthly mean air temperature, which is always below 0°C, by the average of the monthly maximum snow depth during January and February.

Microwave brightness temperatures from snowpacks are simulated with a multiple-scattering model using observed hydrometeorological variables at three target areas on the Canadian plains. Comparison of model microwave emissions with those observed from the Nimbus 7 satellite allows the derivation of the snowpack properties of grain-size and microwave absorption. A simulated time series of microwave brightness temperature is produced for the winter season of 1884—85, for assessing the utility of multi-temporal satellite observations for snowpack monitoring.

The time evolution of drifting snow under a steady wind is estimated using a new numerical model of drifting snow. In the model, Lagrangian stochastic theory is used to incorporate the effect of turbulence on the motion of drifting-snow particles. This method enables us to discuss both the saltation and the suspension process. Aerodynamic entrainment, grain/bed collision (splash process), wind modification and particle size distribution are also taken into account. The calculations show that the time needed by the total mass flux to reach a steady state appears to be 3–5 s. Vertical profiles of horizontal mass flux near the surface show a similar tendency. In contrast, it takes >50 s for the wind speed and the whole mass-flux profile to reach a steady state. This longer time depends on the time-scale of the turbulent diffusion, which is responsible for the mass flux extending to an order of a few meters in height. Applying Taylor’s hypothesis, the estimated length scale at which drifting snow reaches equilibrium is around 400 m. This result is comparable with previously reported field observations.

In 1985–86, western Neuschwabenland was surveyed with an electromagnetic reflection system (EMR) over flight tracks totalling 6100 km. The area spans a triangle from Ekström Ice Shelf and Heimefront Range to the Kraul Mountains [Vestfjella] and covers 48 000 km2.

Data on surface elevation, ice thickness and bedrock topography are presented in maps. The bedrock-elevation map shows more detail than earlier compilations, with a remarkable graben-like structure north of the Heimefront Range and large areas of bedrock below sea-level.

In the same season, tracks totalling 1600 km were flown over Berkner Island. High electromagnetic reflectivity was found over the southern part of Berkner Island, whereas the northern part showed considerably lower reflectivity. We believe that this is due to melting conditions in the southern part and freezing conditions in the northern part.

Four different algorithms for retrieving ice concentration from passive microwave imagery are applied to SSM/I data collected over the Weddell Sea in September 1989. Comparison of the results along a typical transect from the ice edge to the coast shows point-wise differences of up to 45% in ice concentration. The observed differences can largely be explained by the different combinations of the 19 and 37 GHz, horizontal and vertical polarization, data channels utilized by each algorithm. Through their frequency/polarization signatures, and with the aid of coincident surface observations, the differences are further related to ice type, specifically the presence of grease ice or thin ice, and surface conditions.

Sea ice deforms under convergent and Shear motion, causing rafting and ridging. This results in thicker ice than could be formed by thermodynamic growth only. Three different approaches to Simulating the formation of pressure ridges in a dynamic–thermodynamic continuum model are considered. They are compared with and evaluated by airborne laser profiles of the Sea-ice Surface roughness. The respective characteristic of each of the three ridging Schemes is (1) a prognostic equation for deformation energy from which ridge parameters are derived; (2) a redistribution function, Shifting ice between two categories, level and ridged, combined with a Monte Carlo Simulation for ridge parameters; and (3) prognostic equations for ridge density and height, resulting in the formation of ridged-ice volume. The model results Show that the ridge density is typically related to the State of ice motion, whereas the mean Sail height is related to the parent ice thickness. In general, all of the three models produce realistic distributions of ridges. Finally, the Second ridging Scheme is regarded as the most appropriate for climate modelling, while the third Scheme has advantages in Short-term Sea-ice forecasting.

We summarize here data on in situ nitrate ion concentrations in snow pits and firn cores over the last ∼3 250 a. Nitrate fluctuations show seasonal, 11 and 22 a periodicities, and long-term changes both at South Pole station and Vostok. High nitrate levels conform to winter darkness and solar activity peaks. Long-term lows and highs conform to solar activity minima and maxima. The data available support the hypothesis that nitrate is fixed in the upper atmosphere by some solar-mediated phenomenon causing a periodicity in East Antarctica snow. Background levels and non-periodic spikes in nitrate come from other sources.
