We present a concise explicit expression for the heat trace coefficients of spheres. Our formulas yield certain combinatorial identities which are proved following ideas of D. Zeilberger. In particular, these identities allow to recover in a surprising way some known formulas for the heat trace asymptotics. Our approach is based on a method for computation of heat invariants developed in $\left[ \text{P} \right]$.

Existence theorems and asymptotic properties will be obtained for boundary value problems of the form in an unbounded domain Ω⊆ RN(N ≥3) with smooth boundary, where Δ denotes the TV-dimensional Laplacian, τ — (N+ 2)/ (N — 2) is the critical Sobolev exponent, and is the completion of in the L2(Ω) norm of .

We present a subordination theory for spatial branching processes. This theory is developed in three different settings, first for branching Markov processes, then for superprocesses and finally for the path-valued process called the Brownian snake. As a common feature of these three situations, subordination can be used to generate new branching mechanisms. As an application, we investigate the compact support property for superprocesses with a general branching mechanism.

The set of all adjacency-preserving automorphisms of the vertex set of a graph form a group which is called the (automorphism) group of the graph. In 1938 Frucht (2) showed that every finite group is isomorphic to the group of some graph. Since then Frucht, Izbicki, and Sabidussi have considered various other properties that a graph having a given group may possess. (For pertinent references and definitions not given here see Ore (4).) The object in this paper is to treat by similar methods a corresponding problem for a class of oriented graphs. It will be shown that a finite group is isomorphic to the group of some complete oriented graph if and only if it has an odd number of elements.

The present paper began as a natural outgrowth of our first paper, where we characterized the module homomorphisms from group algebras into a fairly restrictive class of group algebra modules. We now investigate module homomorphisms from group algebras into a more general class of group algebra modules. Although the two papers are thus related, they can be read quite independently.

Section 2 contains our extension, Theorem 2.1, of P. J. Cohen's theorem on factorization in Banach algebras (1). Our extension is to Banach modules over Banach algebras equipped with an approximate identity. We should mention first that J.-K. Wang observed the existence of such a generalization, and secondly, that our proof requires no ideas different from those in Cohen's proof. Nevertheless, we include a proof that condenses the original proof considerably.

In this paper we start investigating the lattice of varieties of orthomodular lattices. The varieties studied here are those generated by orthomodular lattices which are the horizontal sum of Boolean algebras. It turns out that these form a principal ideal in the lattice of all varieties of orthomodular lattices. We give a complete description of this ideal; in particular, we show that each variety in it is generated by its finite members. We furthermore show that each of these varieties is finitely based by exhibiting a (rather complicated) finite equational basis for each variety.

Our methods rely heavily on B. Jonsson's fundamental results in [8]. This, however, could be avoided by starting out with the equations given in sections 3 and 4. Some of our arguments were suggested by Baker [1],

This paper is devoted partly to a summary of some results which will be published in detail elsewhere, partly to a description of a new extreme senary form, ϕ6, and an n-dimensional generalization of it.

We characterize equicontinuous Delone dynamical systems as those coming from Delone sets with strongly almost periodic Dirac combs. Within the class of systems with finite local complexity, the only equicontinuous systems are then shown to be the crystallographic ones. On the other hand, within the class without finite local complexity, we exhibit examples of equicontinuous minimal Delone dynamical systems that are not crystallographic. Our results solve the problem posed by Lagarias as to whether a Delone set whose Dirac comb is strongly almost periodic must be crystallographic.

There have been several recent papers on the subject of the P-hull and the SP-hull of an l-group (lattice-ordered group). The most natural formulation of the concepts was given by P. Conrad in [6]. T. Speed studied P-groups extensively in [11]; his work was motivated by earlier work by H. Nakano and I. Amemiya in a vector lattice setting. A. Vecksler [12] produced the SP-hull for f-rings. The ortho-completion of S. Bernau [2] is a related concept.

Among the unsolved problems in graphical enumeration listed in (4) is included the determination of the number of graphs and digraphs with a given partition. Parthasarathy (9) has developed a formulation for counting graphs with a given partition by making a suitable modification of the method given in (2) for the enumeration of graphs. We present here an analogous modification that leads to a formula for the number of digraphs with a given partition. Not surprisingly, the main combinatorial device for this purpose is provided by the classical theorem due to Pólya.

By a polygon with n vertices (an n-gon) we shall mean an ordered n-tuple of complex numbers (z1, z2, … , zn). The numbers zi will be called the vertices of the polygon. The zi may or may not be distinct, and it shall not matter whether a “conventional” polygon can be drawn with the zi as vertices. We shall operate in the spirit of the book of Bachmann and Schmidt [2] though not at the same level of algebraic generality inasmuch as these authors allow zi to belong to a general field.

Throughout this paper, R will be a commutative integral domain with identity and x an indeterminate. If ƒ ∈ R[x], let CR(ƒ) denote the ideal of R generated by the coefficients of ƒ. Define SR = {ƒ ∈ R[x]: cR(ƒ) = R} and UR = {ƒ ∈ R(x): cR(ƒ)– 1 = R}. For a,b ∈ R, write . When no confusion may result, we will write c(ƒ), S, U, and (a:b). The ring R[x]s, denoted by R(x), has been the object of study of several authors (see for example [1], [2], [3], [12]). An especially interesting paper concerning R(x) is that of Arnold's [3], where he, among other things, characterizes when R(x) is a Priifer domain. We shall make special use of his results in our work.

The isomorphism problem for modular group algebras of finite p-groups appears to be still far from a solution (see [7] for a survey of the existing results). It is therefore of interest to investigate the problem for special classes of groups.

The groups we consider here are the p-groups of maximal class, which were extensively studied by Blackburn [1]. In this paper we solve the modular isomorphism problem for such groups of order not larger than pp+1, having an abelian maximal subgroup, for odd primes p.

What we in fact do is to generalize methods used by Passman [5] to solve the isomorphism problem for groups of order p4. In Passman's paper the case of groups of maximal class is actually the most difficult one.

Nonsmooth analysis has provided important new mathematical tools for the study of problems in optimization and other areas of analysis [1, 2, 6-12, 28]. The basic building blocks of this subject are local approximations to sets called tangent cones.

Definition 1.1. Let E be a real, locally convex, Hausdorff topological vector space (abbreviated l.c.s.). A tangent cone (on E) is a mapping A:2E × E → 2E such that A(C, x) is a (possibly empty) cone for all nonempty C in 2E and x in E.

In the sequel, we will say that a tangent cone has a certain property (e.g. “A is closed” or “A is convex“) if A(C, x) has that property for all non-empty sets C and all x in C. (If A(C, x) is empty, it will be counted as having the property trivially.)

A formulation of a fixed point theorem, which can be applied conveniently to non-cooperative games and cooperative games, is suggested in this note.

In a recent publication H. Brandenburg [5] introduced D-completely regular topological spaces as a natural extension of completely regular (not necessarily T1) spaces: Whereas every closed subset A of a completely regular space X and every x ∈ X\A can be separated by a continuous function into a pseudometrizable space (namely into the unit interval), D-completely regular spaces admit such a separation into developable spaces. In analogy to the work of O. Frink [16], J. M. Aarts and J. de Groot [19] and others ([38], [46]), Brandenburg derived a base characterization of D-completely regular spaces, which gives rise in a natural way to two new regularity conditions, D-regularity and weak regularity.

It is the purpose of this note to give some characterizations of flat and projective modules, partly in ideal theoretical terms, partly in terms of the exterior product of a module (“puissance extérieure“); cf. (1).

We shall consider left modules over a ring R with identity element and without proper zero divisors. The left module M is called flat if X ⊗R M is an exact functor on the category of right R-modules X. If M is flat over a commutative domain R, M is necessarily torsion-free. Therefore when looking for flatness of a module M over a commutative domain, one may assume from the start that M is torsion-free.

In the following theorem, we shall not restrict ourselves to commutative rings R, but the modules concerned have to be torsion-free, which, of course, should mean that rm = 0 implies r = 0 or m = 0.

The unboundedness of the sequence of Lebesgue constants (norms), at a point, of certain transforms implies, as is well known, that there exist (i) a continuous function whose transform fails to converge to the function at the point in question (the du Bois-Reymond singularity), and (ii) another such function whose transform, while converging everywhere to the function, does not do so uniformly in any neighbourhood of the stipulated point (the Lebesgue singularity). The converses also hold in our case.

Let S be a finite set and let S1, S2, …, St be subsets of S, not necessarily distinct. Does there exist a set of distinct representatives (SDR) for S1, S2, …, St? That is, does there exist a subset {a1, a2, …, at} of S such that ai ∊ Si, 1 ≦ i ≦ t, and ai ≠ aj if i ≠ j? The following theorem of Hall [2; 6, p. 48] gives the answer.
