Let M be the group defined by the presentation 〈 x, y, z | xy = xm, yz = yn, zx = zr〉,m,n,r ∊ Z. M is one of the few 3-generator finite groups of deficiency zero. These groups have been considered by Mennicke [3], Macdonald, Wamsley [10], Johnson and Robertson [7], and Albar. Properties like the order of M, the nilpotency and solvability were studied. In this paper we give a better upper bound for M than the one given by Johnson and Robertson [7]. We also describe the structure of some cases of M.

Here we give examples and classifications of varieties with strange behaviour for the enumeration of contacts (answering a question raised by Fulton, Kleiman, MacPherson). Then we give upper and lower bounds (in terms of the degree) for the non-zero ranks of a projective variety.

This paper characterizes the Banach space E for the sequential continuity and the continuity on bounded sets of the composition map m: C(S, E)wk x K{E,F)wk —> C(S,F)wk. Here, K(E,F) denotes the Banach space of compact linear operators on the Banach space E to the Banach space F with the usual operator norm, and for any Banach space E, Ewk denote the Banach space E with the weak topology. Also we denote by C(S, E) the Banach space of E valued continuous functions on a nonvoid compact Hausdorff space S with sup norm.

We investigate some properties of spherical means on the universal covering space of a compact Riemannian manifold. If the fundamental group is amenable then the greatest lower bounds of the spectrum of spherical Laplacians are equal to zero. If the fundamental group is nontransient so are geodesic random walks. We also give an isoperimetric inequality for spherical means.

This paper is concerned with local compactness of the minimal primal ideal space of a C*-algebra, a sufficient condition is given. The property in question has bad hereditary properties as is shown by examples.

In this paper we present a new approach to classical Karamata's results concerning the Hardy-Littlewood tauberian theorem.

Let R be an integral domain. An element u of the quotient field of R is said to be pseudo-integral over R if uIv ⊆ Iv for some nonzero finitely generated ideal I of R. The set of all pseudo-integral elements forms an integrally closed (but not necessarily pseudo-integrally closed) overling R ofR. It is shown that , where X is a family of indeterminates; pseudo-integrality is analyzed in rings of the form D + M; and an example is given to show that pseudo-integrality does not behave well with respect to localization.

In the present article we generalize Theorem 2.3 of [6] in the case of JV algebras without a unit element and we obtain as a consequence that the multiplicativity of the involution ((xy)* = y*x*) in the definition of a JH*-algebra is redundant (see [3]). We end this paper with a theorem on unital JH*-algebra which is a nonassociative extension of the main result in [4].

A ring R is called an EC-ring if for each x, y ∊ R, there exist distinct positive integers m, n such that the extended commutators [x, y]m and [x, y]n are equal. We show that in certain EC-rings, the commutator ideal is periodic; we establish commutativity of arbitrary EC-domains; we prove that a ring R is commutative if for each x, y ∊ R, there exists n > 1 for which [x, y] = [x, y]n.

Let G be a group with identity e, let λ be a normal supernilpotent radical in the category of associative rings and let λref be the reflected radical in the category of G-graded rings. Then for A a G-graded ring, λref(A) is the largest graded ideal of A whose intersection with Ae is λ (Ae). For λ = B, the prime radical, we compare Bref(A) to BG(A) = B(A)G, the largest graded ideal in B(A).

A classical theorem of Marcinkiewicz states that a function is Perron integrable iff it has one continuous major and one continuous minor function. Using an elaboration of this remarkable theorem three applications are made; to obtain a new proof of a recent characterization of the Perron integral, to proofs of some theorems on interchange of limits and integration and to extend classical existence theorems for ordinary differential equations.

Let 5 be a monoid. A right S-system A is called strongly flat if the functor A ⊗ — (from the category of left S-systems into the category of sets) preserves pullbacksand equalizers. (This concept arises in B. Stenström, Math. Nachr. 48(1971), 315-334 under the name weak flatness). The main result of the present paper is a proof that for A to be strongly flat it is in fact sufficient that A ⊗ — preserve only pullbacks. The approach taken is to develop an "interpolation" condition for pullback-preservation, and then to show its equivalence to Stenström's conditions for strong flatness.

It is proved that a Fréchet space is quasinormable if and only if every null sequence in the strong dual converges equicontinuously to the origin. This answers positively a question raised by Valdivia. As a consequence a positive answer to a problem of Jarchow on Fréchet Schwartz spaces is obtained.

A partially ordered set P is said to have the n-cutset property if for every element x of P, there is a subset S of P all of whose elements are noncomparable to x, with |S| ≤ n, and such that every maximal chain in P meets {x} ∪ S. It is known that if P has the n-cutset property then P has at most 2n maximal elements. Here we are concerned with the extremal case. We let Max P denote the set of maximal elements of P. We establish the following result. THEOREM: Let n be a positive integer. Suppose P has the n-cutset property and that |Max P| = 2n. Then P contains a complete binary tree T of height n with Max T = Max P and such that C ∩ T is a maximal chain in T for every maximal chain C of P. Two examples are given to show that this result does not extend to the case when n is infinite. However the following is shown. THEOREM: Suppose that P has the ω-cutset property and that |Max P| = 2ω. If P — Max P is countable then P contains a complete binary tree of height ω

We consider some variations of Muntz's classical theorem on when Span{xλi} is dense in C[0,1]. We prove, for example, that if then the collection of spaces is dense in C[0,1] if and only if lim sup(log n)/λn = ∞. Another variation concerns the denseness of the union of spaces of the form The derivations of these results require an examination of the location of the zeros of the associated Chebyshev polynomials.

It is shown that a two-sided continuous ring with ascending chain condition on left annihilators is quasi-Frobenius.

Let G be a finite group and let C be the family of cyclic subgroups of G. We show that the normal subgroup H of U = U(ZpG) generated by U(ZpC), C ∊ C, where Zp is the ring of p-adic integers, is of finite index in U.

In this note we shall give a simple and more direct proof of the Kuiper- Kuo Theorem. Also, we shall simplify Kuiper's proof of the Morse Lemma.
