Nous voulons reprendre ici, pour elle-même, la difficile question qu'évoque notre titre et qui fit le fond d'un débat jadis cèlébre, à propos de l'ordre cartésien, entre Alquié et Gueroult. Non que nous désirions ajouter quelque prolongement, même occasionnel, à ce débat plein de relief, comme le firent par exemple H. Gouhier, J. M. Beyssade et plus récemment J. L. Marion. Nous laisserons ce soin aux historiens de profession, si la comparaison et l'analyse inédites de vieux textes leur en fournit quelque matière. Mais tout en nous appuyant au besoin sur ce que nous savons et comprenons de Descartes, ainsi que sur quelques autres philosophes de cette capacité, tels qu'Aristote ou Hume, Kant ou Hegel, nous essayerons d'esquisser ici, sans contrainte érudite, tant notre perspective que notre solution.

A paradox is a situation in which two seemingly equally rational lines of thought lead to contradictory conclusions. A moral paradox is a situation where the employment of diverse moral principles, each of which is at least intuitively acceptable to roughly the same degree, leads to radically different moral assessments of one and the same action. In his “Some Paradoxes of Deterrence” Gregory Kavka argues that such moral paradoxes lurk in the concept of deterrence and further that the present world situation of mutual nuclear deterrence may well provide a concrete illustration of these paradoxes. That deterrence can involve paradox may well be true, but what I wish to consider here is whether the case of nuclear deterrence is in fact an instance of “paradoxical deterrence”.

Dans la perspective historique que se donne l'oeuvre de Sartre à partir de la guerre et qu'il articule théoriquement dans la Critique de la raison dialectique, il s'agit de se détourner de l'impossible quête de l'être que définissait L'être et le néant. Par l'engagement social et la lutte politique, il vise désormais un monde où l'éthique n'est plus bloquée dans la mauvaise foi, mais sera « la praxis dans son libre développement comme seule relation éthique de l'homme à l'homme en tant qu'ils dominent ensemble la matière ». Toutefois, si l'on interroge le sens et la possibilité de ce « règne humain » qui structure l'ouvrage, ce qui est en jeu c'est l'ambiguïté de toute la démarche morale de Sartre à partir de son ontologies Là, en effet, le « manque » qui définit le pour-soi aboutit à faire de tout projet un échec puisqu'il n'a de sens que par rapport à une totalité manquée: le projet d'être Dieu. Dans le cadre de cette visée d'absolu, le problème moral est finalement celui de la « conscience malheureuse ». Mais tout l'effort de Sartre à partir de la guerre est de montrer que le « manque » n'est pas nécessairement l'échec. La réalité humaine étant une question pour elle-même, ce manque peut aussi être l'occasion d'une action effective avec les autres si l'on ne se paralyse pas sur cet horizon d'absolu. La liberté peut être la quête d'une totalité non plus métaphysique mais humaine et concrète à travers la praxis de chacun.

La philosophie analytique de l'action se réclame du langage ordinaire de l'action comme une des sources de ses data philosophiques. Elle se propose d'en examiner le fonctionnement, d'en extraire les concepts clés, de caractériser les formes de propositions dans lesquelles s'expriment nos actions et notre façon spontanée de les comprendre, d'examiner l'articulation propre aux stratégies d'action et au discours qui les justifie, et de faire des « proposals » pour la construction d'une théorie de l'action. En somme, il s'agit d'ériger le langage ordinaire en instance de contrôle aussi bien sur le plan du traitement de problèmes philosophiques que sur celui de la construction de méta-théories des sciences de l'homme. Ce travail sur le langage de l'action peut revêtir plusieurs fonctions: fonction de clarification ou de détection de confusions, fonction thérapeutique pour guérir le langage de maladies philosophiques, c'est-à-dire des pseudo-problèmes, fonction heuristique pour prescrire une diète appropriée au traitement des perplexités philosophiques qui surgissent « quand le langage tourne à vide, non quand il travaille », pour employer le mot de Wittgenstein (1953, #138).

Selon Roland Barthes (1964, 103), l'élément commun au champ notionnel au sein duquel le signe rivalise avec le signal, l'indice, l'icône, le symbole et l'allégorie serait que chacun de ces termes renvoie nécessairement à une relation entre deux relata. Mais la seule notion de relation ne suffit pas à caractériser le signe, surtout lorsqu'on lui confère une portée générique en vertu de laquelle il englobe sinon tous, du moins la plupart de ses « rivaux ». Une façon de préciser les choses consiste à déclarer que le signe n'est pas une relation binaire, mais une triade; c'est la voie, on le sait, qu'a préconisée Peirce: « In its genuine form, Thirdness is the triadic relation existing between a sign, its object, and the interpreting thought, itself a sign, considered as constituting the mode of being of a sign »(1966, 8.332). Une autre solution consiste à qualifier les termes de la relation; c'est ce que propose, par exemple, Roman Jakobson:

La définition médievale du signe—aliquid stat pro aliquo—que notre époque a ressuscitée, s'est montrée toujours valable et féconde. C'est ainsi que la marque constitutive de tout signe en général, du signe linguistique en particulier, réside dans son caractère double: chaque unité linguistique est bipartite et comporte deux aspects, l'un sensible et l'autre intelligible—d'une part le signans (le signifiant de Saussure), d'autre part le signatum (le signifié). Ces deux éléments constitutifs du signe linguistique (et du signe en général) se supposent et s'appellent nécessairenment l'un l'autre (1968, 162).

Je me sens en très grande sympathie avec la démarche de mon collègue Kaufmann, mais je ne puis en partager toutes les conclusions et j'essaierai de dire brièvement pourquoi. Plus précisément: je partage l'ascriptivisme de Kaufmann, mais je ne crois pas que soit irrémédiablement compromise toute utilisation nomologique ou empirique du langage de l'action. Un tel langage peut être employé pour la production d'énoncés partiellement empiriques dont certains peuvent très bien avoir la forme de lois générales. Soit par exemple le schéma suivant:

ceux qui posent habituellement des actions de type A1 dans des circonstances C1 ont tendance à poser des actions de type A2 dans des circonstances C2.

L'un des objectifs souvent visé par les théories esthétiques contemporaines est la compréhension de ce produit particulier de l'artiste peintre qu'est un tableau. Et, dans la recherche d'une telle compréhension, plusieurs types d'entreprises tant descriptives qu'explicatives ont déployé une diversité impressionnante de concepts et de méthodes.

In the Introduction to Being and Nothingness, entitled “The Pursuit of Being”, Jean-Paul Sartre states that Edmund Husserl has misunderstood his own essential discovery of the intentionality of consciousness and that “from the moment that he makes of the noema an unreal, a correlate of the noesis, a noema whose esse is percipi, he is totally unfaithful to his principle”. In what follows I assess this claim as I explicate Sartre's development of the concept of intentionality and the basis for his claim. In addition, I show how an understanding of the views of both Husserl and Sartre reveals a basic convergence. My primary purpose in this is to further develop the correct description of the objects of the world through an analysis and elucidation of the accounts of Sartre and Husserl.

Several writers have tried to describe the foundations of an egalitarian moral view. Their aim is to explain the way of thinking on which distinctively egalitarian conclusions depend. Egalitarianism is frequently located by reference to utilitarianism. The basic features of the utilitarian view are reasonably well understood and most of us find it at least plausible. Egalitarians want to show that their own view differs from the utilitarian view in some fundamental respect. They hope to convince us that the egalitarian stand on that fundamental matter is at least as plausible as that of utilitarianism.

Il existe en philosophie du langage une distinction relativement récente qui, pour être devenue paradigmatique, n'en demeure pas moins source de perplexités, à savoir celle qui se trouve marquée dans la trilogie «syntaxe-sémantique-pragmatique». Sa premiére apparition achevée figure dans l'ouvrage de Charles William Morris intitulé Foundations of the Theory of Signs et publié en 1938 dans le premier volume de l'Encyclopedia of Unified Science. La syntaxe y est définie comme l'étude du rapport des signes entre eux, la sémantique comme l'étude du rapport entre les signes et les objets, et la pragmatique comme l'étude du rapport entre les signes et leurs utilisateurs. L'originalité de la trilogie morrissienne ne consiste pas dans le fait d'introduire les notions de sujet, de signe et d'objet. Ces trois sortes d'entités ont en effet étè invoquées de longue date dans la réflexion philosophique sur la signification. Elle réside plutôt dans le fait de constituer comme objets distincts d'étude les rapports signe-signe, signe-objet et sujet-signe.

In order to find out how successful or unsuccessful Spinoza's philosophy of mind is, I will examine what Spinoza says about (1) the nature of mind, (2) its relation to the body, (3) its adequate/inadequate and true/false ideas. In doing so I will see what problems critics say he runs into and then find out if what they say about these difficulties can be resolved. If these difficulties can be resolved within Spinoza's own framework then his theory of mind is a success. If not, then it is a failure. I shall argue that his theory of mind is a success because the problems that his critics say he has are not really problems at all or if there are problems they can be resolved within his own system.

It seems to be a part of the oral and written tradition of contemporary philosophy that Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam have resurrected a kind of Aristotelianism about natural kinds by reference to purely semantic ideas. Thus in a recent issue of the Journal of Philosophy, M. R. Ayers writes that according to Kripke and Putnam: “The names ‘gold’, ‘tiger’ etc. have their meaning … by being the name of, or, more technically, by ‘rigidly designating’, a natural kind.” And in the immediately following pages he suggests that the view Kripke and Putnam arrive at is “not at all unlike Aristotelian doctrine”, but arrived at from “the rather special point of view of a concern with modal logic, and against the background of Russell's theory of descriptions, the modern obsession with proper names, and so forth”. Presumably what Ayers is alleging here is that something like the Aristotelian position on substance, species, essential properties and so forth is or is intended to be the outcome of the Kripke-Putnam investigations.

En rompant avec la conception du temps comme une succession linéaire et accumulative de l'histoire, M. Foucault se retrouve avec une population d'événements dispersés, d' « événements discursifs », de pratiques qui construisent leur propre objet. Car il n'y a pas de réalité qui ne soit déjà une réalité discursive, une réalité de discours. Nietzsche avait bien dit que les faits n'existent pas; seules existent les interprétations. De là que le probléme de Foucault soit celui de la confrontation entre ces faits et une description pure des « événements discursifs », une (dé)monstration qui doit surprendre l'énoncé dans la singularité et la matérialité de son événementialité, et faire apparaître l'ensemble des conditions—historiques—qui ràglent l'apparition et la conservation des énoncés. La difficulté majeure de la méthode archéologique se manifeste alors immédiatement: comment réconcilier le projet d'une description libre de toute « intention prescriptive » avec la tâche infinie de l'interprétation?

In his lucid and perceptive essay, “Recent Work on Kant's Theoretical Philosophy”, Karl Ameriks signals Kant's distinction between appearances and things in themselves as one of the (two) “central issues” of the Critique of Pure Reason. The reason why the issue is central (and complicated) is that Kant appears to say contradictory things on the matter. At times he says (or implies) that appearances are the same as things in themselves, and at other times he says (or implies) that they are different. Some interpreters have tried to make sense of these contradictions by claiming that “although for Kant there are not two objects involved, there are still two transcendental and intelligible aspects or points of view that are called for by his doctrine of things in themselves and appearances”. However, it is not immediately clear what kind of an animal an aspect or a point of view is, what kind of operation it is to “look at” an object from such different points of view, and what kind of results this operation is supposed to give. In the present paper, I make a fresh proposal. I propose to interpret Kant's conflicting claims on the relation between things in themselves and appearances in terms of the contemporary framework of possible-world semantics.

Kripke, Putnam and others have proposed what is often called The New Theory of Reference. Professor Matthen thinks that this theory needs to be modified in various ways: (1) so as to avert misunderstandings about the New Theory's commitment to essentialism; (2) so as to clarify the semantic function of what he calls “nonconnoting terms”; (3) so as to answer Quinean doubts about the determinacy of ostension; (4) so as to correct Putnam's “simplistic” account of ostension; (5) so as to solve Kripke's puzzle about the seemingly inconsistent beliefs of the bilingual Pierre; and (6) so as to show how many ordinary names, contra Kripke and Putnam, can be treated as “equivalent” to definite descriptions. No doubt many of the other things he says in his paper are clever, and perhaps even true. But as to the six modifications I have listed, I have run into difficulties. To the extent that I am able to understand them, I have been forced to conclude that they are neither needed nor helpful.

Some philosophers suspect that the functionalist account of mind supports a psychologistic account of logic. One who has argued for a connection of this kind is Remmel T. Nunn. If the connection holds, it might be a powerful support for the currently unfashionable position of psychologism; conversely, it might be a damaging objection to functionalism. In either case, to estabjish the connection would be an achievement of considerable philosophic interest.

Slippery slopes crop up with startling frequency when controversial moral issues are debated. Generally, those who mount this line of argument appeal to some grim, highly undesirable state of affairs which would—they allege—inevitably ensue were society to sanction certain activities. Their reasoning is often fallacious, offering little more than an easy out for those reluctant to address problematic moral issues with the care and honesty they demand.

An account of the ontological nature of collectives would be useful for several reasons. A successful theory would help to show us a route through the thicket of views known as “methodological individualism”. It would have a bearing on the plausibility of legal positivism. It would be relevant to the question whether collectives are capable of acting. The debate about the ontology of collectives is therefore important for such fields as the theory of action, social and political philosophy, the philosophy of law and the philosophy of social science. I hope to contribute to the debate by proposing an account of collectives, and by showing its theoretical soundness and utility. In its essentials, my proposal is that collectives are “mereological sums” of “stages” of persons linked by a “unity relation”. The influence on this account of some theories of personal identity will perhaps be obvious. But the motivation is different, for it lies at least as much in the ability of the theory to help us deal with the issues already mentioned as in problems concerning the identity of collectives over time. I acknowledge that my proposal is not commonsensical; however, I believe that no account could be both commonsensical and adequate. I will begin by introducing some constraints on a theory of collectives.

Philosophers, like ordinary people, are likely to retain practices long after the conditions which justified them have disappeared. At a recent philosophical convention, subtle arguments concerning abortion appealed to intuitions about exceedingly odd cases and allegedly widely agreed upon intuitions (that I doubted were shared by many reflective people). Such appeals to intuitions, especially about particular cases, are quite common among philosophers. Yet, during this century the traditional theoretical bases for such appeals to intuitions have generally been abandoned. New theoretical bases have been developed, but they are of dubious soundness, and even if sound, do not support the appeals to intuitions so commonly made in applied ethics. Perhaps critics of such appeals to intuitions have failed to capture the bit of good sense that is likely to underlie a widespread practice among intelligent and reflective people that seems to outlive its justification.

A main point of my article, as I see it, is that we can solve Putnam's problem, as articulated in the first paragraph of section three, without recourse to the definition of “natural-kind term” as “rigid designator of a natural kind”. I had three main objections to this definition:

(a) It makes the classification of a term as a natural-kind term dependent on one's metaphysics, i.e., on the status given to natural kinds. However, Putnam's argument seems to be independent of such metaphysical considerations, and the sort of natural kinds it establishes (if any) should be “read off its face”, not set down in advance (section 2).

(b) It permits the derivation of “exotic necessary truths” such as “If water is H20 then necessarily water is H20” (sections 9 and 10).

(c) Putnam's main point appears to be about the independence of a term's extension from a linguistic community's beliefs. Why should this point affect the theory of designation? Kripke's argument about names establishes the non-descriptiveness of names while leaving undisturbed the classical conception of names designating individuals. Why should we not take his and Putnam's parallel arguments as establishing the non-descriptiveness (non-connotation) of natural-kind terms while leaving undisturbed the classical conception of general terms designating classes (section 10)?
