In the early part of the present century, when stratigraphical geology, starting from the clear succession of Secondary rocks of England, was groping its way among the older formations in this country and abroad, the Old Red Sandstone occupied a somewhat indeterminate position. The series of deposits comprised under that name had been recognised chiefly in the British Islands, hardly at all on the opposite mainland of Europe. By most geologists they were classed as a subordinate and inconstant portion of the Carboniferous system, while by some they were placed rather at the top of the yet unexplored “Transition” or “Greywacke “ series. Murchison first claimed for them the dignity and importance of a distinct system. On the whole, they had yielded comparatively few organic remains; they consequently seemed to lie as a thick red barren zone between the richly fossiliferous Silurian deposits below them and the equally fossiliferous Carboniferous limestone above. By degrees, however, as they brought forth a rich harvest of new and strange ichthyolites, they indicated their own right to recognition, and when they were found covering a vast space in Russia with many of the same types of fish as they had yielded in Britain, their claim to rank as a distinct and independent system was no longer contested.

The breeding habits of this asterid have been noted by M. Sars, who has described the external features of the developmental stages. He observed the peculiar habit of ‘brooding.’ In the spring of 1840 he found several of the parents at very low-tide-mark fixed to stones in their brooding position. The species he examined is described as Echinaster sanguinolentus, and is apparently the same species, though he speaks of the ‘blood-red’ embryo, whereas my specimens were a light orange. They conform exactly to the tint of the oral surface of the parent. The time of breeding of Cribrella oculata at St Andrews appears to extend from February to April inclusive, and throughout this period the parents are found fairly plentifully, adhering to the under surface of rocks, nursing the masses of eggs or young under their bodies. This habit of protecting its young is also pursued by an allied species, Asterias mütteri, which is equally abundant in the same locality, but the breeding of which is effected earlier, i.e., in November and December. I hope to proceed with the study of this species in the near future.

The first whipspider (Arachnida: Amblypygi) and three new examples of whipscorpions (Arachnida: Uropygi: Thelyphonida) are described from Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) strata of the Crato Formation, Ceará State, Brazil. The whipspider is described as Britopygus weygoldti gen. et sp. nov. It resembles members of the extant family Charinidae, but cannot be unequivocally placed. Two of the whipscorpions are referred to Mesoproctus rowlandi Dunlop, 1998 and one could be a subadult, since, like juveniles of extant species, it has a relatively broad anterior sternum. There are differences between these two specimens in pedipalp and flagellum morphology, but both characters are variable within extant species. The third and largest whipscorpion is incomplete and referred to Mesoproctus sp. Its carapace length is equal to or exceeds that of the largest known extant genus Mastigoproctus Pocock, 1894.

The fossil ricinuleids are described, and their systematic relationships revised, based on a study of all British and American specimens. Phylogenetic analysis, utilising a new character set, indicates a probable basal dichotomy between the fossil and extant forms. The order is divided into two new suborders: Neoricinulei subordo, nov., for the extant genera, and Palaeoricinulei subordo. nov., for the fossil forms. Two new genera are erected: Amarixys gen. nov. for Curculioides gracilis (Petrunkevitch, 1945) and A. stellaris sp. nov., and Terpsicroton gen. nov. for Poliochera alticeps Pocock, 1911. Three new species are erected in the genus Curculioides: C. mcluckiei sp. nov., C. pococki sp. nov., and C. gigas sp. nov., and one in the genus Poliochera: P. gibbsi, sp. nov.

Melting experiments with plagioclases were performed in the systems Ab-An, Ab-An-H2O, Qz-Ab-An-H2O, and Qz-Or-Ab-An-H2O-CO2. The experimental products were analysed by electron microprobe, and the kinetics of the reactions were studied qualitatively.

Melting of the plagioclase in the system Ab-An (P = 1 atm, T = 1420°C) is very fast in the first minutes but becomes slower with increasing run duration and is incomplete even after 1000 hours. The Ab/An fractionation between melt and residual plagioclase is similar to that described by Bowen (1913).

Melting kinetics of plagioclase in the system Ab-An-H2O ( = 5 kbar, T = 1000°C) is controlled by the diffusion of water into the plagioclase structure. Melting is especially fast parallel to the a-axis. The experimental products show separation of melts and crystals.

In the tonalite system Qz-Ab-An-H2O, equilibrium melting could be observed down to 830°C ( = 2 kbar) but not a lower temperatures. The kinetics of the reaction is enhanced by deficiency or excess of alumina in the aluminosilicate melt surrounding the plagioclase crystals. The fractionation of Ab and An between melt and plagioclase crystals is more pronounced in the presence of quartz than in the Ab-An-H2O system. The ratio An/An + Ab is approximately 0·35 in the melt and 0·85 in the coexisting plagioclase T = 880°C).

In the haplogranodiorite system Qz-Or-Ab-An-H2O–CO2, melting reactions were performed at P = 0·5 kbar, T = 880°C, and of approximately 0·5. It is assumed that near equilibrium compositions of melt and coexisting residual plagioclase could be obtained in long duration runs (run time = 60 days). The distribution of Ab and An between melt and minerals is similar to that observed in the tonalite system. The partial melt coexisting with an An-rich plagioclase and Or-rich K-feldspar is relatively poor in An.

The pyrolysis conversion of vegetable residues into energy and biochar, and its incorporation in agricultural soil, reduces CO2 emission and provides a longterm soil carbon sequestration. Moreover, biochar application in soil seems to increase nutrient stocks in the rooting layer, improving crop yield. Compared with the numerous studies assessing the positive effect of biochar on yield, however, little research has been published elucidating the mechanisms responsible for the reported benefits. Few studies cited soil moisture as the key factor, attributing the increased yield to the higher soil water availability.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of biochar on the physical and hydraulic properties of a bare Padana Plain (Cadriano, Bologna) agricultural soil. A preliminary plot experiment in 2009 explored the influence of 10 and 30 kg ha–1 of biochar on soil moisture, without effects from plants. Results of the first experiment suggested using higher biochar rates in a similar experimental scheme. During the second experiment, 30 and 60 t ha–1 doses were investigated. Soil water content, bulk density, electrical conductivity and soil water retention were measured. The comparison between treated soils and the control indicates that the biochar rate is directly correlated to electrical conductibility and inversely correlated with bulk density. The effect on the density of soil can be very positive in case of heavy soils. The dark colour of the char increased the surface temperature with respect to the control, while no differences were detected at 7·5 cm depth. No influences were found on other soil characteristics, including soil pH, moisture and water retention.

In a Note published in the Annals of Botany for December 1899, I gave some account of the structure of two stems from the Lower Carboniferous of Scotland, provisionally named Araucarioxylon fasciculare, sp. nov., and A. antiquum, Kr. (Witham, sp.).

In the present paper these stems are described fully, with the help of illustrations, and others, presenting similar points of interest, are added. The species dealt with are the following:—

Dadoxylon Spenceri, sp. nov.

By the permission of Professor A. C. Ramsay, LL.D., F.R.S., Director-General of the Geological Survey of Great Britain and Ireland, and Professor Geikie, LL.D., F.R.S., Director of the Geological Survey of Scotland, I have been permitted to describe several new Crustaceans which have come under my notice in my capacity of Acting Palæontologist to the Scotch Survey. They are from the cement-stone group of the Calciferous Sandstone series of the Scottish border, and, with a very few exceptions, were got from one locality on the river Esk, about four miles south of Langholm, in Dumfriesshire, and were almost all collected by A. Macconochie, Fossil Collector to the Geological Survey of Scotland. They belong to two orders, viz., Phyllopoda and Decapoda.

A revised reconstruction of the dermal skull roof of Acanthostega gunnari from the Upper Devonian of East Greenland is provided, incorporating modifications consequent upon further study of the specimens and in the light of new information from the Upper Devonian genus Ventastega from Latvia. The new reconstruction features a midline gap between the frontal and nasal bones and median rostrals. A revised profile for the skull and a rendition of the dermal ornament is also provided.

The authors revise the occurrences of burrow networks with striated walls having dominantly transverse to oblique striae, which have been assigned to the ichnogenera Spongeliomorpha Saporta, 1887, and Steinichnus Bromley & Asgaard, 1979. The taxonomic status of the ichnogenus Steinichnus Bromley & Asgaard, 1979 is examined and it is suggested that this ichnogenus is a subjective junior synonym of Spongeliomorpha Saporta, 1887. Spongeliomorpha is best reserved for an unlined network of burrows having distinct surface ridges or grooves of different orientation and massive filling. The diagnosis of Spongeliomorpha is emended accordingly and the proposed ichnospecies revised for consistency with the diagnostic features of the ichnogenus. Spongeliomorpha milfordensis Metz, 1993a is considered a subjective junior synonym of Spongeliomorpha carlsbergi (Bromley & Asgaard, 1979) after a visual comparison and statistical analysis of the angle of striation with respect to the burrow midline in the type material. Nevertheless, the use of statistical techniques is not advocated for distinction of ichnotaxa, but may support observations. Spongeliomorpha carlsbergi is considered as an indicator of nonmarine settings and was probably produced by burrowing insects. Proposed ichnospecies of Spongeliomorpha that fit the emended diagnosis include S. sudolica (Zaręczny, 1878); S. iberica Saporta, 1887; S. sicula D’Alessandro & Bromley, 1995; S. chevronensis Muñiz & Mayoral, 2001; and Spongeliomorpha isp. nov. aff. sicula Lewy & Goldring, 2006.

The scent-producing area of closely packed holocrine and apocrine skin-glands in Aotes has an atypical, caudal position. Whilst most of the holocrine glands open into hair follicles by ordinary short ducts, some of the ducts are elongated, opening either into follicles or on the skin surface. The holocrine and apocrine secretions, in conjunction with the peculiar splitting of individual hairs, cause felting of the pelage on the gland field. A peculiar structure of the hairs facilitates their splitting. Evolution and function of the gland field are discussed.

Microdecemplex rolfei, gen. and sp. nov., a new microarthropleuridean less than 5 mm long, is described from the Middle Devonian Panther Mountain Formation of New York State, U.S.A. The specimens consist of organically preserved cuticle, with some preserving the only cephalic structures known for arthropleurideans. A new order, Microdecemplicida, and a new family, Microdecemplicidae, are established. The probable phylogenetic position of the Microdecemplicida as one of the basal clades of Diplopoda is proposed.

A diverse arthropod-dominated ichnofauna, associated with a poorly preserved crustacean fauna and soft-bodied ?medusoid impressions, is described from the Blaiklock Glacier Group of the north-western Shackleton Range (Coats Land), Antarctica. The ichnofauna consists of Asaphoidichnus, Beaconites, Didymaulichnus, Diplichnites, Gordia, ?Laevicyclus, Merostomichnites, Monomorphichnus, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Rusophycus, Selenichnites, and Taphrhelminthoides (ichnogen nov.). Three new ichnotaxa are recognised: Taphrhelminthoides antarcticus n. ichnogen. et ichnosp. is a bilobate trail, composed of two parallel flat lobes, separated by a median ridge with a characteristic figure-of-eight pattern. Merostomichnites gracilis n. ichnosp. is characterised by its proportions (external:internal width ratio >3) and series of 10 to 12, thin, linear tracks. Selenichnites antarcticus n. ichnosp. is characterised by small elongate horseshoe-shaped marks, the medial portion showing three to five transverse scratch-marks.

The palaeoenvironment is interpreted as extremely shallow marine water, possibly a tide-dominated estuary, based on sedimentological evidence and the composition of the ichnofauna. Radiometric and palaeomagnetic data indicate that this assemblage is Lower Ordovician in age, representing the first autochthonous Ordovician fossiliferous succession to be described from Antarctica. The succession shows several sedimentological and palaeontological similarities with the basal units of the Ordovician Table Mountain Group in South Africa, supporting palaeogeographic models placing the Palaeozoic Blaiklock basin close to the Ordovician Table Mountain basin.

The Trawenagh Bay Granite (TBG) is shown to be a tabular pluton with gently inclined contacts that, from anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) studies, was emplaced as a series of flow lobes whose geometries indicate that it flowed horizontally towards the W out of late stage adjacent steeply inclined monzogranite sheets of the Main Donegal Granite (MDG). We thus confirm in detail the central broad idea of the Pitcher & Read (1959) model that the Main Donegal Granite fed the Trawenagh Bay Granite. Early TBG flow lobes cut and are cut by deformation associated with the sinistral shear zone in which the MDG lies, thus demonstrating synchronicity of shearing and magmatism. The TBG magma leaked out of the shear zone and emplaced into undeformed country rocks and was probably guided by shear zone splays that die out along its northern and southern margins. At a late stage in the development of MDG, the splays developed from the NNE-trending SW boundary of the shear zone and caused a gap in this structure through which TBG magma was channelled out of the MDG. A review is presented of the last twenty-five years of published and unpublished work on the batholith, showing that the MDG shear zone was a long-lived structure almost certainly in existence before the emplacement of that body, and that four of the contiguous granitiods (Thorr, Ardara, and Rosses, as well as Trawenagh Bay) were all sourced within the shear zone. A new model is presented for the development of the batholith. The pre-existing crustal structure was a deep-seated N12°E fault in the basement to the Dalradian wall rocks of the granites, that was coupled to up to six other more minor WNW–ESE basement faults in the W. A NE–SW-trending sinistral shear zone was initiated at the end of the Caledonian orogeny, as calc-alkaline and deep-seated appinites were generated in the area. This shearing activated the pre-existing structures at the current crustal level, and the N12°E structure acted as a continental transform fault which allowed the dilation needed to facilitate the wedging space requirements of the MDG and the other units in the shear zone, as well as transferring regional sinistral shear through the system. The Thorr and Ardara plutons were emplaced first into the shear zone and then those magmas leaked out into the adjacent wall rocks: one to form a large laccolith, the other to form a balloon. Steep early MDG complex sheets (granodiorites and tonalities) were emplaced in the shear zone between the Thorr and Ardara emplacement sites. Dilation continued until late stage extensive monzogranite sheets were intruded in the NW and SE of the pluton. One of these probably leaked material westward to form the Rosses laccolith and southwestwards to form the TBG in the final stages of shear zone movement.

Since the publication in 1840 of a brief but valuable memoir by J. D. Forbes, in which that author drew attention to “the traces of ancient glaciers” in the Cuillin Hills, that district has remained almost unnoticed by glacial geologists for half a century. This neglect is doubtless attributable chiefly to the difficulty of access to the mountains, a consequence of their peculiar configuration, which in turn is closely bound up with the glacial history of the district. The present contribution is the outcome of observations made during the years 1895–1900 in mapping the central part of Skye for the Geological Survey of Scotland. In traversing the mountains day after day throughout several successive seasons, the writer has been struck especially by the impressive evidence which they present of glacial erosion as the dominant factor in their sculpture, and to enforce this is the chief object of the present communication.

The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is widely and routinely used to measure the preferred orientations of Fe-rich minerals in undeformed and weakly deformed granite plutons. The interpretation of the mapped AMS fabrics depends on rock-textural observations, on the map patterns of the fabrics in plutons, and on comparisons of the pluton fabrics to tectonic structures in the country rocks. The AMS may document emplacement-flow related fabrics, but the emplacement fabrics may be reworked or completely overprinted by rather weak tectonic strains of the magma mush or the cooling pluton, especially in syntectonic intrusions. The Late Devonian Canso granite pluton is an excellent example of overprinting of emplacement fabrics by weak tectonic strains. The Canso pluton was emplaced ca. 370 Ma along the boundary between the Meguma and Avalon tectonic terranes, in the northern Appalachian orogen. The AMS was mapped along two traverses that cross the pluton and that are perpendicular to the terrane boundary. Textural evidence suggests the rocks underwent very modest post-full crystallisation strains. The AMS records the dextral transcurrent shearing that occurred on the terrane boundary during emplacement and cooling of the Canso pluton, supporting interpretations that weakly deformed syntectonic granites can be used as indicators of regional bulk kinematics. AMS fabrics in Late Devonian granites of the Meguma Terrane suggest partitioning of the non-coaxial shearing into the terrane bounding fault, with pure-shear dominated deformation further from the fault. Numerical simulations suggest that the kinematics recorded by the fabrics in the Canso pluton was simple-shear, or transpression or transpression with small components of pure shear oriented perpendicular to the bounding shear zone.

Silurian and late Ordovician K-bentonites of the British Isles provide a record of prolonged volcanism during the convergence of terranes associated with closure of the Iapetus and Tornquist Oceans. In the Southern Uplands–Longford-Down and Midland Valley terranes, they range from late Caradoc to Telychian, withfurther early Homerian occurrences. South of the Iapetus suture, in Eastern Avalonia, the range is Hirnantianto early Ludlow in northern England and early Telychian to earliest Ludfordian in the Welsh Borderland and English Midlands. In both cases, the distributions indicate that volcanism was more long-lived and probably more extensive than is depicted in current plate tectonic reconstructions. Average intervals between K-bentonites are estimated, based on Harland et al. (1990), as: c. 65000 years at Dob's Linn (late Aeronian to early Telychian); c. 39000 years in the Cautley area (Telychian); c. 51000 years in a borehole at Walsall (late Llandovery to Sheinwoodian). Trace element geochemistry suggests mostly subalkaline dacitic to rhyolitic magmas in which LILE-enrichment accompanies variable enrichment in crustally derived elements (Ta, Nb). The geochemistry suggests comparison with continental arc volcanism of ‘withinplate, attenuated lithosphere’ character. Ta–Nb enrichment and an absence of Eu anomalies from REE profiles are consistently present northof the Iapetus suture, but trace element patterns are less consistent south of the suture where negative Eu anomalies are generally present. Discriminant function analysis successfully distinguishes Llandovery, Wenlockand Ludlow K-bentonites from south of the Iapetus suture, and Llandovery K-bentonites from north and south ofthe suture. Those from north of the Iapetus suture probably originated in volcanism along the southern marginof Laurentia before final closure of the Iapetus Ocean. Those from south of the suture may have been derived from volcanism associated with late destruction of Iapetus and Tornquist oceanic crust, although an alternative involving volcanism at the southern margin of Eastern Avalonia or Baltica may accord better with the distribution of K-bentonites and the geographical trend of the fragmentary outcrops of Silurian volcanic rocks from southern Ireland to Belgium.

Microzarkodina is a genus of mainly Middle Ordovician conodonts that has its centre of distribution in Baltoscandia, and much less commonly occurs in southern China, Australia, Argentina and Laurentia. In Baltica a series of species, Microzarkodina russica n. sp., M. flabellum, M. parva, M. bella, M. hagetiana and M. ozarkodella, established themselves successfully. The succession of species ranges from just below the base of the Middle Ordovician (M. russica) to the upper part of the Middle Ordovician (M. ozarkodella). The species are frequently used for biostratigraphical purposes. The largely contemporaneous species Microzarkodina bella and M. hagetiana probably both evolved from M. parva and mostly occurred in separate areas. Microzarkodina ozarkodella probably evolved from M. hagetiana. This present investigation is based on a total of 94,208 elements, collected from 20 sections and one drill-core site in Sweden, one drill-core site and one outcrop in Estonia and two sections in the St Petersburg area in Russia. The Microzarkodina apparatus probably consisted of 15 or 17 elements: four P, two or four M and nine S elements. The S elements include different Sa, Sb1, Sb2, and Sc element types.

A Brief description of the early stages of floral organogenesis in Primula bulleyana is followed by an account of the formation of flowers from experimentally incised primordia. The nature of the floral parts that develop alongside a median incision is related to the developmental stage of the flower primordium at the time of its bisection. The observations are discussed with reference to the determination of the parts of the flower.

Mitrospermum bulbosum sp. nov. is described from a single specimen found in the Lower Carboniferous Cementstone Group of Berwickshire. It is a platyspermic seed about 14 mm diameter. The nucellus is free from the integument laterally and contains a single megaspore above which is a pollen chamber and well-developed apical beak. The integument is cordate at the base around a bulbous chalazal region with two membranous wings which terminate above as two flat lobes having a V-shaped sinus between. At the base of this sinus is the micropyle which surrounds the apex of the nucellar beak.

Mitrospermum compressum Arber has been re-investigated from 21 specimens and evidence adduced to show that the micropylar canal expands upwards and opens between two short apical lobes.

Conostoma oblongum Will, has been re-investigated from 20 specimens. It possesses four integumental bundles; sometimes there are two basal lobes but no integumental flanges; no free apical lobes have been seen and the seed was sessile, not having a wide pedicel.

A specimen of Lagenostoma ovoides Will, with a mature prothallus is briefly described from longitudinal sections. At the upper end the prothallus has three archegonia and a circular trough surrounding the ‘tent-pole’.
