Cryptosporidium infects millions of people worldwide causing acute gastroenteritis, but despite its remarkable epidemiological and economic impact, information on the epidemiological trends of human cryptosporidiosis is still scarce in most countries. Here we investigate a panel of 486 cases collected in Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula) between 2000 and 2008, which sheds new light on the epidemiology in this region of the South Atlantic European façade. Incidence rates in Galicia are one order of magnitude higher than those reported in other regions of Spain, suggesting that this parasite remains largely underdiagnosed in this country, and are also larger than those typical of other European countries with available data. Two species dominate our dataset, Cryptosporidium hominis (65%) and C. parvum (34%). The sex ratio of patients infected by either species was 0·5, but C. hominis was significantly more common in younger males. C. parvum infections were more acute and required more specialized medical attention, which suggests a differential adaptation of each species to human hosts. The parasites display strong seasonal and geographical variation. C. parvum incidence peaked during summer and was mainly detected in rural areas while C. hominis infections were more frequent in autumn and exhibited a more even geographical distribution. Such differences probably reflect their distinct sources of infection – C. parvum is mainly zoonotic and C. hominis anthroponotic – and the effects of climatic variables, like temperature and rainfall.

When Trichomonas vaginalis in culture medium was exposed in three successive experiments to temperatures fluctuating between +7·2 and +13·0°C., between +10·5 and +15·5° C. and between +5·9 and +7·0° C., two strains survived for 3 days but no longer. One other strain used in these experiments lived for 1 day only, and two other strains did not survive for a single day.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between HSV-2 infection and several socio-demographic and sexual practices of Mexican and Central American female sex workers (FSWs) in the Soconusco region in the State of Chiapas, Mexico. A cross-sectional study was carried out based on a sample frame of bars where FSWs were active in the Soconusco region. FSWs consented to investigations and answered a questionnaire and provided a blood sample for specific HSV-2 antibody analysis.

One hundred and sixteen bars were studied and 484 women were interviewed. The overall frequency of HSV-2 infected women was 85·7%. Variables that reflected exposure to HSV-2 were significantly associated with the frequency of the infection. Additionally, variables such as education and country of origin were significantly associated with HSV-2 infection. These results suggest that this infection is highly endemic in the Soconusco, posing a health risk for the study population.

It is customary to state the energy needs of an individual, a family or some larger group in terms either of net or gross calories. If the original estimate has been made from a study of the actual or net intake, what extra percentage would have to be added to this net basal figure to permit the need to be stated in gross calories? A similar problem arises in the conversion of gross to net requirements.

The serum antibody responses and 50% protective levels (PL50) of antibody were determined, using the SRH test, at one and twelve months post-vaccination in a group of student volunteers immunized with one of three dosages of a trivalent surface-antigen influenza virus vaccine, or with placebo.

It was found that, for the H3, H1 and B haemagglutinin components present in the vaccine, a dose of 6 μg HA elicited high serum antibody responses at one month post-immunization. High mean antibody levels and a high incidence of volunteers with PL50 values of antibody against each of the HA components of the vaccine remained in the volunteer group twelve months later. The results are discussed in relation to the vaccine dosage used and the nature of the population immunized.

In the May 1935 issue of this Journal there appeared an article by Gibson and Muir entitled “A study of the streptococci from fifty cases of bovine mastitis”. Since the authors of that article do not appear to have fully appreciated the previous work on the subject, it has become necessary to state the position in the light of research carried out in various countries during the past few years.

Studies of the chemical reactions of the haemagglutinins and neuraminidases of eight strains of influenza viruses have been made by the use of chemical reagents reacting with chemically active groups in the protein molecule. The results indicate a close resemblance between the active centres of the haemagglutinins and neuraminidases in all the strains tested. In all cases the activities were unaffected by reagents reacting with the —SH group of cysteine, the —CH3S group of methionine, the amino group of lysine, the guanidyl group of arginine, or the indole ring of tryptophan. In all cases both the haemagglutinating and enzymic activities were reduced or destroyed by agents reacting with amide groups or reacting with both tyrosine and histidine.

By the use of iodine under conditions in which tyrosine reacts but not histidine, and fluorodinitrobenzene under conditions in which histidine reacts more strongly than tyrosine, it was possible to detect a number of different active centres.

(1) An active centre containing histidine and an amide group but not containing tyrosine was present in all the virus strains and was the only centre detectable in A1 and A2 strains. This type of centre appeared to possess both haemagglutinating and neuraminidase activity.

(2) Active centres containing tyrosine and an amide group were detected in strains of A and B viruses. There was some evidence suggesting that tyrosine-containing centres were of two types: one possessing both haemagglutinating and enzymic activity while the other was a haemagglutinin without neuraminidase activity.

The results could be explained by supposing that the presence of histidine in the active centre was essential for neuraminidase activity and that enzymically active tyrosine-containing centres also contained histidine, but that tyrosine could substitute for histidine, but that tyrosine could substitute for histidine in haemagglutinating centres.

A scoping review was conducted to identify modifiable non-antimicrobial factors to reduce the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in cattle populations. Searches were developed to retrieve peer-reviewed published studies in animal, human and in vitro microbial populations. Citations were retained when modifiable non-antimicrobial factors or interventions potentially associated with antimicrobial resistance were described. Studies described resistance in five bacterial genera, species or types, and 40 antimicrobials. Modifiable non-antimicrobial factors or interventions ranged widely in type, and the depth of evidence in animal populations was shallow. Specific associations between a factor or intervention with antimicrobial resistance in a population (e.g. associations between organic systems and tetracycline susceptibility in E. coli from cattle) were reported in a maximum of three studies. The identified non-antimicrobial factors or interventions were classified into 16 themes. Most reported associations between the non-antimicrobial modifiable factors or interventions and antimicrobial resistance were not statistically significant (P > 0·05 and a confidence interval including 1), but when significant, the results were not consistent in direction (increase or decrease in antimicrobial resistance) or magnitude. Research is needed to better understand the impacts of promising modifiable factors or interventions on the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance before any recommendations can be offered or adopted.

A prospective serological and clinical study of the epidemics due to the A2/Hong Kong/68 influenza virus was made during the winters 1968–9 and 1969–70 in volunteer subjects in the Royal Air Force. In October 1968 nearly all subjects had haemagglutination inhibiting (HI) antibody to the A2/Singapore/57 virus and more than half had antibody to strains more recently prevalent in Britain. The proportion with HI antibody to A2/Hong Kong/68 increased from 31% in October 1968 (most at low titres) to 44% after the first epidemic and 72% after the second (most at high titres). Serological infection rates were much lower in those who had detectable antibody at the beginning of each winter than in those who did not. Respiratory illnesses coupled with serological evidence of influenza infection during the winter were rare in persons with an initial titre of HI antibody of 1/40 or more. Infection in the first winter conferred complete protection against infection, with or without illness, in the second. In both epidemics about half those with serological evidence of infection had no reported illness.

The incidence of hepatitis A in England has declined in recent years, but travel-related cases and imported infections remain a challenge. We report an outbreak of hepatitis A in an extended family where two primary cases were infected while in Pakistan and two secondary cases were infected in England. All four were infected by the same genotype IIIA virus. Testing of the children in the extended family by dried blood spots (DBS) determined that three had evidence of recent past infections (anti-HAV IgM positive), one had a current asymptomatic infection (anti-HAV IgM and HAV RNA positive) and one was incubating the virus (anti-HAV IgM negative, HAV RNA positive). HAV RNA from the DBS was identical to the adult cases. This outbreak demonstrates secondary spread of hepatitis A by asymptomatic children after importation from abroad and highlights the importance of preventing travel-associated hepatitis A infection.

The prevalence of African horse sickness (AHS) serotypes in zebra foals from the Kruger National Park, South Africa was examined for possible associations between serotypes and to estimate the basic reproduction number, R0. The distributions of serotypes between zebra were not independent in the 6- and 7–8-month-old age classes (P < 0·005). This does not necessarily imply biological interactions between serotypes, as heterogeneity in host-vector transmission rates can generate non-independent distributions of serotypes. Both age and month of capture were significant factors in the number of serotypes infecting each zebra (P < 0·0001). Pairwise, positive associations between non-cross-reacting serotypes were found in the 7–8-month-old class only. For AHS overall, estimates of R0 ranged from 31–68. Assuming serotypes are transmitted independently, estimates of R0 for individual serotypes ranged from 10 for serotype 1 to 23 for serotype 6. The wide range of estimates emphasizes the need for a better understanding of serotype transmission and interactions in AHS.

Common sources of shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 infection have been identified by investigating outbreaks and by case-control studies of sporadic infections. We conducted an analysis to attribute STEC O157 infections ascertained in 1996 and 1999 by the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) to sources. Multivariable models from two case-control studies conducted in FoodNet and outbreak investigations that occurred during the study years were used to calculate the annual number of infections attributable to six sources. Using the results of the outbreak investigations alone, 27% and 15% of infections were attributed to a source in 1996 and 1999, respectively. Combining information from both data sources, 65% of infections in 1996 and 34% of infections in 1999 were attributed. The results suggest that methods to incorporate data from multiple surveillance systems and over several years are needed to improve estimation of the number of illnesses attributable to exposure sources.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus of type O (strain Israel 1/63) was passaged serially fourteen times in cattle previously vaccinated with increasing doses of formol-treated vaccine of the homologous strain. Primary and secondary lesions developed in the majority of the animals. Virus from the 14th passage, which proved to be capable of reinfecting animals only 34 and 35 days after infection with the original strain, differed from the original strain in complement-fixing properties and in sensitivity to antiserum. These changes were of a degree indicative of subtype variation.

Virus titres in the saliva, in the tongue vesicles and in the foot vesicles of partly resistant cattle were very great and would have constituted a danger to other stock under field conditions.

The experimental data confirm previous observations on the infection of partly resistant cattle and on the isolation of variant strains during passage of FMD virus in tissue cultures containing specific antiserum.

During a 15-month period in Scotland a small but important number of human Campylobacter cases (3·2%) arose from 91 putative household outbreaks. Of the 26 outbreaks with known strain composition, 89% were composed of the same MLST which supports the potential use of MLST in public health epidemiology. The number of cases associated with household outbreaks is much larger than general outbreaks and there is some evidence to indicate that there may be secondary transmission, although this is relatively rare.

The incidence of rabies in livestock is an important factor for estimating the economic impact of the disease, but obtaining reliable data is hindered by inadequate surveillance. In order to understand the contribution of livestock rabies to the overall burden of disease, the rabies incidence in cattle was investigated in detail for Turkey between 2008 and 2011. Data were compiled on cattle numbers, samples submitted for rabies diagnosis, vaccinated animals and positive rabies cases in animals for seven regions in Turkey. Rabies incidence in cattle fluctuated annually and differed between regions from 0·10 to 3·87 cases/100 000 animals. The positive influence of compensation schemes was observed. Livestock losses were conservatively estimated at around $250 000 international dollars per annum, although in areas where compensation schemes are not operating this could be an underestimate of the economic burden. Vaccination of cattle remains an option for disease prevention, although oral rabies vaccination through aerially distributed baits should be implemented to prevent the further spread of fox-mediated rabies, which could result in much greater economic costs.

One of the first duties which the present Commission had to undertake was to decide where the epidemiological observations which were necessary to be made should be carried out. After various parts had been visited, it was decided that the headquarters of the Commission should be in Bombay, and that Bombay City and Island should, in the first instance at least, be put under observation for epidemiological purposes.

This study describes the epidemiology of human salmonellosis in New Zealand using notified, hospitalized and fatal cases over a 12-year period (1997–2008). The average annual incidence for notifications was 42·8/100 000 population and 3·6/100 000 population for hospitalizations. Incidence was about twice as high in summer as in winter. Rural areas had higher rates than urban areas (rate ratio 1·23, 95% confidence interval 1·22–1·24 for notifications) and a distinct spring peak. Incidence was highest in the 0–4 years age group (154·2 notifications/100 000 and 11·3 hospitalizations/100 000). Hospitalizations showed higher rates for Māori and Pacific Island populations compared to Europeans, and those living in more deprived areas, whereas notifications showed the reverse, implying that notifications are influenced by health-seeking behaviours. Salmonella Typhimurium was the dominant serotype followed by S. Enteritidis. For a developed country, salmonellosis rates in New Zealand have remained consistently high suggesting more work is needed to investigate, control and prevent this disease.

During the last few years, several cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in humans have been reported in Tunisia. However, detailed information on WNV infection in wild birds, the primary amplifying host of WNV, are lacking. In this work, we investigated the exposure of wild sparrows (hybrid Passer domesticus × hispaniolensis) living in two oases in southern Tunisia (Gabès and Kébili oases) to WNV, through the detection of WNV-specific antibodies by using ELISA and microneutralization tests. In total, 208 birds were sampled (54 from Kébili, 154 from Gabès). Anti-WNV antibodies were detected in two birds, corresponding to an overall seroprevalence of 1%. There was no significant difference between the two sampled populations [1·85% (1/54) in Kébili, 0·65% (1/154) in Gabès]. These data provide indirect evidence of the exposure of resident sparrows in southern Tunisia to WNV.

In two surveys of three commercial abattoirs a minimal apparatus method for making bacterial counts, the ‘loop-tile’ method, detected the same trends in bacterial numbers on beef carcasses as the ISO reference method applied to the same samples. Both methods showed the carcasses from one abattoir, that with an export licence, to carry consistently higher numbers of bacteria, and one of the four sites sampled on each carcass to be consistently dirtier than the other three.

The use of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene restriction patterns to study the molecular epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis was investigated. Ninety-four isolates of Neisseria meningitidis were characterized by their rRNA gene restriction patterns with 16 + 23 S rRNA from Escherichia coli as a probe. Thirteen rRNA gene restriction patterns were recognized; each of these patterns represented between 1 and 30 isolates. Isolates with the outbreak-associated phenotype B15P1.16 (sulphonamide resistant) all gave a single rRNA gene restriction pattern but this pattern also contained isolates with other phenotypes. Further discrimination between isolates was achieved by comparison of banding patterns resulting from restriction endonuclease digestion of chromosomal DNA with Bgl II. This gave a banding pattern consisting of about ten bands which was simple to interpret. Using this technique 94 isolates were classified in 54 patterns containing between 1 and 14 isolates. Restriction endonuclease analysis with Bgl II characterized outbreak-associated isolates with the phenotype B15P1.16 and enabled strains not typable by conventional methods to be identified as probable outbreak-associated isolates. The techniques should prove useful for epidemiological studies.
